Nikon AF Micro 200mm f/4D IF-ED lens is listed as “out of production, discontinued or no longer available” on Nikon Singapore website product listing. Nikon USA still has that lens listed as current.

In Adorama and B&H the lens is listed as “back-ordered”.

Details on Nikon’s press conference in the UK

I have a confirmation on the Nikon press conference in the UK: the magic will happen on Wednesday, July 29th 2009 at 2:30 pm in the Charlotte Street Hotel in London. This is one of those 100% sure rumors. Soon I will have the event info for few other countries.

I still do not have a confirmation on the second Nikon press conference that was scheduled for August 4th in Sweden. It could be that different countries may have event scheduled at different times (in Sweden the events were listed for July 30th and August 4th).

Leaked Nikon roadmap poll

I have no way to verify this information - it could also be that this person did not realize the significance of this rumor and now is trying to cover it up. Some more digging on the leaked Nikon roadmap

I do realize the consequences for Nikon if the leaked roadmap is real. I just want to emphasize on the fact that the leak came from the Czech forum grafika.cz (here is the exact translated link again). NikonRumors and many other sites consecutively picked on that news. The post in question came from an unregistered user named NikonRumor (that’s not me) with an IP address of 205.212.73 .— A quick IP address geolocation search shows that the comment was posted from Englewood, Colorado and the IP is owned by a company called NTT America Inc. (www.nttamerica.com). NTT America is a subsidiary of NTT Communications, the international and long distance arm of Nippon Telegraph and Telephone Corporation (Japan).

I cannot link the Colorado IP address of a Japanese company with the Czech forum and the potential leak from Nikon UK, but I do know for a fact that Nikon does use a third party IT company in the UK. Of course this could all be a hoax from somebody with a lot of free time on their hands. I do not know and I do not have any other information on that topic besides what was already posted on the Czech forum. If Nikon Corp. would like to make an official statement on this rumors, here is my contact form.

It appears Nikons 2009-10 schedule for release of cameras and lenses has been leaked. At least that is the claim. But it can of course just as well be fantasies or a wish list created by someone having to much time to spend!

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G rumor (part 3)

The Japanese kakaku board (here is a bad English translation by Google) is chatting about the new Nikon AF-S 70-200/2.8G II lens. The basic specs are expected to be:

VR II
Nano coating
New Auto focus priority and manual focus priority
Weight 1540g (+70g than Gen. I)
Length 209mm, slightly shorter than Gen. I

Based on the tip I received, it seems that this guy nailed the D700 and SB900 before so his credibility is pretty high.

Nikon D700x sooner than expected

I will continue to be “fair and balanced” and report that Thom Hogan has received some information that the Nikon D700x will be released before November 2009. The D700x is expected to have the 24MP sensor from the D3x and video.

I also received multiple tips on the Nikon D700x camera that I sumarized in this post a while ago and it seems that the time frame matches Thom’s prediction on the D700x release date.

The Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8G lens is probably the most speculated lens in the whole Nikon product line.

Nikon Coolpix compact camera with built-in projector: confirmed

After my post yesterday I received multiple tips and some blurry images of a Nikon point and shoot camera with a built-in projector. This time I will not post the pictures (don’t ask me why), but I can assure you that I can clearly see a “projector” button on the camera and an extra opening/lens on the front for the actual projector. The pictures do not appear to be photoshopped. The camera looks really small and I still wonder how they were able to include a projector in it (probably using LED technology) - this is why I did not believe the initial tip. The projector probably will be usable only for short distances. For comparison, here are some images of a portable projector for the iPhone released just few days ago (640×480 resolution, recommend distance 40 inches, 10 lumens):

Who cares about another Nikon p&s? Probably nobody here, but this rumor tells us that Nikon “still got it” and even as a big/old/traditional company, they can still innovate and implement “world’s first” ideas. I hope there will be similar surprises in the DSLR and lenses area this year. The bad news is that one of the two scheduled Nikon press-conferences will probably be for point and shoot camera(s).

Otherwise everything was covered by cloth in a box funky hood setup. What resonated with me though was the screen was obviously taking video BUT did not have the greyed out area on top/bottom (as is on my D90) and the screen looked to be wide screen. I regret not taking my camera! Though the man quickly blocked my view of the screen after he realized I was watching closely. It did NOT look like a D700 body, looked like a slightly refined D300.”

The leaked Nikon D300s screenshots appeared to be in a wide-screen format as well. No way to verify this rumor.

Nikon compact camera with built-in projector: Nikon is about to launch a compact camera with a built-in projector, about 1hr battery life with projector on. Rough specs: 5x zoom, VR, 28-140 mm equivalent lens, 12 MP. I have hard time believing this one - I asked for some more details. We shall see.

Nikon AF-S DX 18-135mm to be discontinued

Nikon D700x

I have received several tips from stores, Nikon reps, Nikon authorized service centers, etc about the Nikon D700x. Those tips are coming from different parts of the world and the interesting thing is that they all point to a Nikon D700x release in the Fall of 2009:

“I was at *** 2009 show earlier this year in ***, and was asking a staff member on the Nikon stand about the D700 replacement/upgrade. I was told whatever replaces it will be released in October/November 2009, but they would say no more than that.”

“My D300 is in for service at Nikon (bad aperture control module) and I asked the tech when a new dslr was being released and which one. He responded with the D700x this fall. A 24mp replacement for the D700.”

Nikon D700x NR probability rating: 40%

I believe there will be a D700 update this year, but I don’t think it will be a D3x sensor in a D700 body (would you buy one of those for $6000)? I think we will see more of the D300s type of update for the D700.
