While we are entering the slow summer months (Nikon seldom announces major products during that time), I have prepared several guest posts to keep us entertained. Today's article by Otto Peter is on the audio levels of the Nikon D4 and D800 DSLR cameras (check also Otto's previous guest post on how to modify the Yongnuo RF603N wireless remote flash trigger to fit non-Nikon flash trigger sources). If you have an interesting idea for a guest post, you can contact me here.

Nikon says nothing about audio parameters of the D800, so I measured some of them. I have my own D800, and I was permitted to record some test signals with a D4 at a local dealer. I did not care about the built in microphone, and used only the external audio input. I also did not concern myself with auto sensitivity. Signals were generated by an Audio Precision System One audio analyzer, recorded on a memory card, extracted from the video stream on a PC, and the digital audio data was either fed back into the System One, or viewed in time and frequency domain in Adobe Audition. While I took reasonable care to provide correct results, I am known to have erred at times – so I beg pardon, should I have got something wrong.

Worst news first – frequency response

There is no bass. The frequency response of the D4 is identical. The lower limit of the D800’s audio band is too high for proper reproduction of most male voices, let alone environmental sounds. This might make sense for the built in microphone, as it somewhat attenuates noise from holding and operating the camera, but even then, I would expect the roll-off to start at a lower frequency. Two cascaded first order high-pass filters, each with a cut-off frequency of 77Hz, fit this curve quite well. I was able to extend the lower 3dB band limit from the camera’s native 120Hz to 30Hz by applying the parametric equalizer of Adobe Audition 3.0.1 twice, bass shelve set to 27Hz, +10.7dB, first order (second order applied once would not work). I did not fiddle with the values too much, but the result is within 1dB of what I tried to achieve.

Input sensitivity and level meters

The maximum amplitude before clipping is 2.83Vpp (peak-to-peak) at sensitivity setting 1, which corresponds to a sine wave of 1VRMS (root-mean-square). This is true for all frequencies – the bass attenuation is done later in the signal chain, and the input amplifier cannot take higher amplitudes. At sensitivity 20, the maximum amplitude before clipping is 1.27mVpp, or 450µVRMS sine. Between sensitivity 1 and 7, the steps are 4.48dB on average, and between 7 and 18 they are 3.08dB. The last two steps are probably meant to be close to 3.08dB as well, but input amplifier noise results in clipping at slightly smaller sine amplitudes and consequently slightly larger steps than expected. Sensitivity settings 6 and 7 are somewhat exotic, as both clearly show signs of AGC (automatic gain control). I did not observe this at the other settings, but I did not spend too much time for that.
Level meters are quite precise, the first yellow bar is 12dB below the red bar, and when the red bar lights up, clipping just begins. Unfortunately, the meters are positioned after the high-pass filter (they are probably derived from the already digitized signal), so they will often not indicate clipping at low frequencies, especially at low sensitivity settings, when the input amplifier clips, but not the converter.

Noise

That’s another problem. Higher sensitivity settings are not useful due to excessive noise. My camera has an SNR (signal-to-noise-ratio) of 90dB at setting 1, but only 28.5dB at 20. That’s about 18µVRMS over the entire signal band (DC to 24kHz). A state-of-the-art audio pre-amplifier chip has something like 0.2µV, which would mean much more useful 67dB SNR. Interestingly, there is less noise at the same sensitivity if the internal microphone is used in a quiet room. While the D4 is better (38dB SNR at 20), it is still far from good.

Distortion

Input signal at 1kHz: 0.7dB below maximum.
Amplitudes of some harmonics relative to signal:
 2kHz 84.8dB
 3kHz 92.0dB
 4kHz 108.1dB
 5kHz 95.4dB
 6kHz 116.5dB
 7kHz 101.2dB
 8kHz 114.0dB
 9kHz 98.6dB
 10kHz 118.6dB
This results in a THD (without noise) of about 0.007%, which is neither fancy nor bad.

Anti-Aliasing Filter

This is much more important for audio than for video. Frequencies above half the sampling frequency, i.e. above 24kHz, should be completely eliminated, frequencies below that limit should be passed on without attenuation. This is not the case in the D800. The first time attenuation reaches 60dB is at about 26.5kHz, which aliases to 21.5kHz in the sampled signal. Up to 48kHz, attenuation varies between 60dB and 75dB. I did not test further. Not exactly impressive.

Input Impedance

2.2kOhm at 1kHz – this is ok for microphone inputs.

Nikon filed two more patents (2013-019992, 2013-011831) in Japan for a new full frame 58mm f/1.2 lens.
Maybe Nikon is really serious about recreating the legendary Ai Noct Nikkor 58mm f/1.2 lens (read more about it here).

The Newest Addition to the Nikon 1 System, the 1 NIKKOR 32mm f/1.2 Lens, Offers Superior Resolution and Incredible Depth of Field to Nikon 1 Shooters

MELVILLE, N.Y. – Today, Nikon Inc. introduced the newest addition to the acclaimed Nikon 1 system, the 1 NIKKOR 32mm f/1.2 lens, a fast medium-telephoto offering for photographers who appreciate the speed and portability of the Nikon 1 System. With a fixed focal length of 32mm and a maximum aperture of f/1.2, the new 32mm lens is the fastest in the ever expanding 1 NIKKOR lens lineup. An ideal lens for portraiture, the 1 NIKKOR 32mm f/1.2 lens is capable of rendering breathtaking images that capture every detail.

The 1 NIKKOR 32mm f/1.2 lens (86mm equivalent in 35mm format) enables brilliant sharpness and is able to resolve intricate details in portraits such as hair, eyes and eyelashes, while also allowing for strategically precise image blur and bokeh. From flattering portraits to still-life art, this fast lens gives users the ability to emphasize a primary subject combined with a skillfully blurred background for a dramatic yet natural separation, and shoot with confidence in challenging light.

Additionally, core NIKKOR lens technologies have been carried over into the 1 NIKKOR series, as the 32mm f/1.2 is the first 1 NIKKOR lens to be equipped with a Silent Wave Motor (SWM), a manual focus ring and a Nano Crystal Coat -- all traditional staples of the NIKKOR line. Utilizing the Close-Range Correction System, the lens is able to provide high-resolution, realistic textures and minimized aberration, even during close-up shooting. The M/A (autofocus with manual override) mode lets the user to manually focus during autofocus operation for intuitive and fine adjustments while shooting. Additionally, the lens sports an elegant and portable design while Nikon’s exclusive Nano Crystal Coat effectively reduces instances of ghost and flare for optimal image quality.

This year Nikon celebrates the 80th anniversary of the Nikkor lens:

NIKKOR is Nikon's brand of photographic lenses. This year, the NIKKOR camera lens celebrates its 80th anniversary since the first lens was introduced in 1933. The NIKKOR name arose from adding "r"—a common practice in the naming of photographic lenses at the time the name was established—to "Nikko", the Romanized abbreviation for Nippon Kogaku K.K., the original name used when the company was established.

Since the release of the first NIKKOR lens, Nikon has continued its long tradition of developing and incorporating cutting-edge technologies into its lenses. The OP Fisheye-Nikkor 10mm f/5.6 fisheye lens for SLR cameras, released in 1968, was the world's first lens to incorporate aspherical lens elements, and Nano Crystal Coat, originally developed for IC steppers and scanners, virtually eliminates internal lens element reflections across a broad range of wavelengths.

Nikon's own high-quality standards are applied to all stages from initial design and development to final product release for design that responds to user needs, and production system and inspections that ensure the superior quality of NIKKOR lenses.

In October 2011, the first 1 NIKKOR interchangeable lens for Nikon 1 cameras was released. The new 1 NIKKOR mount continues over half a century of Nikon's tradition of excellence with the development of interchangeable lenses that began with the Nikon F mount.

Nikon's lineup of lenses for cameras with interchangeable lenses currently consists of more than 80 types of lenses, including fisheye lenses, ultra wide-angle to super-telephoto lenses, zoom lenses, Micro lenses, and PC-E lenses for SLR cameras, as well as 1 NIKKOR lenses for advanced cameras with interchangeable lenses. Nikon will continue to develop and release high-quality products that appeal to users the world over.

DigiCamControl is a free, open source program that gives you full control over Nikon cameras from your Windows PC. It supports tethering, live view, remote triggering, direct image transfer, controlling multiple cameras simultaneously and even offers you to control the camera from your tablet or smartphone. This is the first full release of digiCamControl which has support for almost all Nikon DSLR's cameras.

Connect your camera to the computer with a USB cable and fire up the program, and you have full access to almost all camera controls. You can have the viewfinder image live on your computer monitor and you can focus and expose manually or automatically and see the result directly on your computer screen.

The program supports almost all digital Nikon SLR's plus quite a few other cameras, and enables you to utilize almost all your camera's features remotely. Apart from shooting single frames, digiCamControl also offers sequences, bracketing, time lapse and focus stacking.

You have detailed control over the image transfer, storing, naming and many other aspects of your shooting session from within the program.

Once you have set up your camera, you can control it wirelessly using a smartphone or a tablet. Both iPhones, iPads, Android devices and other devices that can run a web browser are supported. You can even use a second remote computer (Mac, pc, Unix or whatever) to control and release the camera.

DigiCamControl is developed by Duka Istvan and is distributed as open source with both the finished program and the original source code (C#) freely available under the GNU license. You can read the history of digiCamControl here.

Nikon published their financial results for the year ending on March 31, 2013. You probably remember that for the third quarter the company reported a “rapid deterioration in the market" which led to a cut in the annual profit forecast and some pretty good savings.

Summary for the financial year that ended on March 31, 2013 for Nikon Imaging Company:

Both sales and income posted expected results in the 1st half, but the market condition got abruptly worsened in the 2nd half. Because the inventory was built in the 1st half to counteract Thai floods risks, the profitability was deteriorated compared to the 1st half. Sales ended with 28% hike and operating income 13% up from the previous year. The inventory was reduced to nearly level as planned at fiscal year end.

Summary of estimation for the next financial year (ending March 31, 2014):

Persistent contraction is likely for the compact camera market, but the market for digital camera—interchangeable lens type is expected to keep up the current growth. Both sales and income are forecasted to rise 8% and 55% each.

Note the last statement: "New product launch of mid-class cameras is also expected to help the performance". This probably means a D3200 and/or D5200 replacement and new mirrorless cameras by March 2014.
