Nilambur

Nilambur is one of the most beautiful places in Kerala which is located in malappuram district, North of kerala, south India. Nilambur is a town as well as a taluk in malappuram District. It is situated geographically at the eastern end of the district where the tamilnadu state boarder shares the Western Ghat mountain lands with kerala. The taluk’s boundaries are nilgiri hills of tamil nadu in east, eranadu taluk in west , palakkad district(Mannarkad taluk) and perinthalmanna taluk in south and kozhikkode (calicut) district in north.

The River 'Chaliyar' , the fourth major river in kerala nourishes nilambur. All the major streams of chaliyar are joins it from or around the valleys. Nilambur is rich in forest wealth. The New Amarambalam reserved forests of nilambur is included in the buffer zone region of Silent Valley evergreen forests as a part of Nilgiri Biosphere project . Nilambur forests are the continuation of Bandipur (Karnataka), Muthumala (Tamilnadu) and Wayanadu(Kerala) wildlife sancturies also.

A major portion of nilambur forests are occupied by teak plantations. Nilambur is also known as Teak town due to the heavy plantations. The teakwoods in nilambur forests are well famous for their quality. A dedicated Museum for teaks are situated in Nilambur and it is the only museum for teaks in the World itself. A major part of the forest land in the district is included in nilambur taluk. Besides teaks, the forest contains rosewoods, mahagony, venteak and bamboo a are present there. Almost all the animals like elephants, Tigers, Deers, Beers, Wolfs etc.. which were usually present in the southindian forests are also found in the nilambur forests.

Conolly's plot is the oldest teak plantation wich is named in honor of the formal collector H.V. Conolly in Malabar district of Madras state in the British ruin periods . He was directed the teak plantations in the entire Nilambur . Mr.Chathu Menon helped Canolly in doing this. Canolly's plot occupies 2.31 hectares aside the Chaliyar river at Aruvakode.This place is a hotspot in Nilambur . A number of vistors are came to enjoy the site. A hanging bridge across the chaliyar is built recently in the plot. This plantation is occured in 1842 -1844 and and it is the oldest and first teak plantation in the world. And also the world's oldest teak tree is also situate here at Aruvakkode near Vadapuram.

Transportation

It is 72 kilometers from calicut. And 44 from malappuram town towards gudallur route through SH28 by road. There is also a railway line which connects Nilambur more easily with the southern kerala.

Shornur - Nilambur Railroad fits the choice of a nature loving traveller.

In the peiod of british rule , they introduced a railwayline from shornur junction upto chandakkunnu, nilambur. Now the road is well utilised by the southern railway and it is a route that connects nilambur to the southern parts of kerala

Climate

Nilambur is well famous for its nice climate and attractive sceneries of wildlife, forests.

The river chaliyar and its nourishments maruthappuzha, punnapuzha , kalakkanpuzha etc are famous for their gold deposits. But as the production cost is much higher the effort to extraction of gold from the land is avoided by the state government.

The Kerala Tourism Development Corporation announces to promote Nilambur a brand of malabar tourism through the eco-tourism program.

People

The people of nilambur taluk mainly consists of local tribals , and the major castes like hindus, muslims and christians. All are of equal ratio in population. Most of them speak the mothertongue ‘Malayalam’ in their own ‘Eranadan’ slang. But few tribes speaks some scriptureless language also in their colonies.

Chungathara Panchayath

Chungathara Panchayath is situated in the Nilambur Block Panchayath of malappuram district. Chungathara Panchayath has an area of 129.69 square kilometers and is spread through Chungathara and kurumbalangode villages.Chungathara is 9 kilometers away from Nilambur town to the east side through Nilambur-Nadukani-Gudalur Main road. . The panchayath came into existence in 1962.

The boundaries of the Panchayath are,

East : Vazhikkadavu , Edakkara, Moothedam Panchayaths (malappuram District) and Tamilnadu state.
North : Meppadi Panchayath (Wayanad District) and Thiruvampadi Panchayath (Kozhikkode district)
South : Moothedam Panchayaths and Nilambur Municipality
West : Chaliyar, Urgattiri Panchayaths (malappuram district) and koodaranji Panchayath (Kozhikkode district)

The total population of Chungathara is 44,569. Among them 22,474 are women and 22095 are men ( according census 2001). The literacy rate is 88% . The transportation facilitates to the panchayath is simple.

The nearest railway station is Nilambur, Airport is Karippoor (Calicut Airport ) . There is a bus bay located in the middle of the town which controls the local transportation.

It is clear that 'Chungathara' got its name during the royal ruin period of 'Tampurans' of Nilambur Kovilakam family. Older Citizens saying that the Place was the center of Tax collection of Kovilakam Tampurans. 'Chungathara' in malayalam ( ചുങ്കത്തറ ) means ' Tax Land '.

In the midst of Nineteenth Century, there were only certain tribal communities lived in these places. At that time Chungathara filled with forest wealth, Farmsteads and lease fields , which were occupied by Kovilakam. In 1888 a British company bought 1000 acre land from the Kovilakam rulers in the place now called 'Clean-track' and started Rubber plantations. This was done by the company named 'English and Scott Joint Wholesale Coperative Society of India'. We can now see that the place names of these area are the donation of this company. For example 'Munderi' (മുണ്ടേരി) which actually 'Mountain Area', Clean-rock (ക്ലീന്‍ റോക്ക്‌) is 'Clean Track', Appenkap (അപ്പന്‍കാപ്) actually 'Up and Cape' etc.

On the same period; the kovilakam rulers invites various people from the other side of Malabar for Cultivation of rice and other cereals under the wet lands owned by them. And the kovilakam 'Tampurans' Provided these people with Seeds, Tools and Cattle to sustain their presence. Further these people brought some tribal and other people as their workmen. And during the common celebrations like 'Onam' , 'Vishu' etc ,these lords will give the workmen some rice, cloth, coconut , oil etc as allowance. But these unlucky workmen had the will to do the slavery for the landlords throughout their life.

The migrated Christian community from Kottayam and pathanamtitta district played significant role in the development of social structure to the modern variant. They established Educational Institutions like Highschools, Colleges , Nursery and Hospitals and other organizations which leads chungathara as a educational and cultural centre of the East Eranad.

The people in this panchayath have a special mutual respect apart from other areas among all the major groups like Hindus, Christians and Muslims thus keeps a valuable lifestyle. All the people are intermingling the festivals and ceremony of others. Arts like 'kaikottikkali', 'Chavittukali' and 'Kolkali' ( of tribal people ) and ' Oppana' , 'Thiruvathirakali', 'Margamkali' (of the other casts ) are existing here. The muslims are mainly businessmen and Christians are farmers and the hindus have the both business and cultivation. The Chaliyar river and Punnappuzha flowing through Chungathara and divides the land into 3 almost equal area. Due to this the land is very fertile. The main cultivations are Rubber,Coconut, Aricanut, pepper, rice, banana etc. There are many paddy fields in this panchayath.

People have a lot of Tabernacle here like 'Nedumbazhazhi temple', 'Kunnath Temple', 'Salem Marthoma Church' , 'Ebanazer Marthoma Church', 'Masjidul Huda', 'Masjidul Mujahideen' etc. The main business areas in the panchayath are Chungathara Town and Erumamunda Town. There are so many small scale industry units through out the panchayath. Jijo , Deepthi, Live jwala etc are some of the Arts and Sports Clubs in Chungathara. Other establishments are 'Janashakteekaranam' (ജനശാക്തീകരണം) study center, YMCA Chungathara, Youngmen's Library, Gramapanchayath Cultural building etc

There are two Primary Health centres in Chungathara and Kurumbalangode. Besides those 'Marthoma Mission Hopital', Janatha Hospital, Shafi Ayurveda Marma Chikilsalayam, Sanjose Dental Clinic, Government Ayurvedic Dispensary , Government Homeo Dispensary (erumamunda), Alsharaf Homeo Dispensary etc are the active health related division in the panchayath. There is also a veterinary hospital in Manali.

MPM Higher Secondary, Marthoma Higher Secondary , Navodaya Parallel College, Marthoma College, Government L.P School , Najathul Anam Arabic College etc are some of the noticeable educational institutions of the town. The main Financial Establishments are ' South malabar Gramin Bank', 'Catholic Syrian Bank', 'Co-operative Bank', 'Nilambur Co-operative Urban Bank' (branch), 'Vanitha Co-operative Bank', Muthoot Fincorp, Manappuram Gold Loan, 'Kosamattam' Finance etc.

There is a Community Hall (K.P master memorial) to conduct the public functions and marriages etc. The main Government establishments in the town are Post Office, Telephone Exchange , Electricity board office,
'Panchayath Office' and 'Village Office'.

Edakkara Panchayath

Edakkara Panchayath is situated in the Nilambur Block Panchayath of malappuram district. Edakkara Panchayath has an area of 58.09 square kilometers and is spread through Edakkara and Chungathara villages. The boundaries of the Panchayath are, Chungathara and Vazhikkadavu panchayaths in north, Vazhikkadavu and Moothedam panchayaths in east, Moothedam and Pothukallu panchayaths in south and Chungathara and Pothukallu panchayaths in West.

The geographical elements in Edakkara Panchayath are primarily Hill Areas and include Hills, Forests, Rivers and Streams and runnels etc. ‘Punnapuzha’ One of the main Affluent of the river ‘Chaliyar’ and the stream ‘ Kalakkanpuzha’ are flowing through Edakkara Panchayath and the later one joins with punnapuzha near Edakkara Town. The most parts of the Panchayath are occupied by forest area of the ‘Western ghats’ mountain ranges and the remaining parts with crofts. But the most important part of the Panchayath is the ‘Edakkara Town’. The Panchayath earns its revenue mostly from this market town.

Edakkara Town is comparatively a noticeable and medium township among towns in kerala which is the major town after Nilambur. The town is residing at the eastern side of the malappuram district near by Gudalur taluk in Nilgiri District of TamilNadu State. The term 'Edakkara' in Malayalam language (എടക്കര) means ' midland'. In olden days Edakkara serves as a rest place for the passengers from Calicut (the cultural head of Malabar) to Ooty (A tourist spot in tamilnadu) and edakkara divides the route into two with equal distance (about 90 kilometers towards both sides). Thus the name got 'midland'. Nowadays Edakkara has been growing into a major township in malappuram district.

Edakkara Panchayath came into existence in 1963. At that time Vazhikkadavu and Moothedam panchayaths are included in Edakkara Panchayath. But after some years Vazhikkadavu is divided from Edakkara first and in 1978 moothedam also divided from the Panchayath. The pre-Realm Edakkara is the part of the western ghat forests which were under the sovereign of the ‘Nilambur Palace’. The migrations to edakkara were during the first decades of 1900.

The History of Edakkara is tightly related to the ‘Nilambur palace’ (Territory of the ‘Samorine Dynasty’). The rulers of the ‘Nilambur Kovilakam’ divide the land as 18 ‘Cherikkals’. Among them ‘Kizhakkummuri‘ Cherikkal is emerged as the Edakkara area today. In olden days the tribal groups known as ‘malamuthas’, ‘cholanaikkas’, ‘malanaikkas’, ‘Aranadans’ ,’Paniyans’ and ‘Kurumas’ are lived in these forests.

The modern phase of Social life in edakkara started with the migration of the Muslims who came there for the forest resources like bamboos and other forest woods. Around the same time, other groups from Hindu community like ‘Nayar’ and ‘Theeyas’ also reached the place and started the farming and tillage. And gradually edakkara became a dense area around the 1920s. And in 1932 a lower primary school is started in Edakkara P.B. The fist Bus services called ‘Rajalakshmi’ were also started during that season through the Calicut-Ooty road built by the British Rulers. And later after 1947 , Edakkara and other parts of Nilambur also witnessed another massive migration and it is from the Travancore area of southern kerala. The majority of them are Christians .

Now Edakkara Panchayath consists of 16 wards. And according to the census of 2001 :-

Population is around 29000 , Density of population 445, male : female ratio 1032 , Male Literacy 91.66 %, Female Literacy 84.88 .

There are a number of shops and business firms, educational institutions, hospitals and some government establishments also in the town today.
