The Hearst family donated the property to the state of California in 1957, and it has since become a National Historic Landmark and is open for public tours. Hearst descendants still use a Victorian house located on the property as a family retreat.

If you want a velvet tablecloth for the bargain price of $400, you are certainly in luck.

Every-single-item in The Gramercy Park Hotel’s rooms are for sale, from the alarm clock to the martini shaker to the tongs in the ice bucket (a measly $40). So if you are into the whole dark, mansion-like, bohemian-room-from-the-1800s thing, you can take some of its offerings home from NYC without having to hit up Sky Mall.

Of course, you have to bring a few extra dollars with you, or a credit card that has a lot of room on it, especially if you want to buy an iPod for $750. Yes, that right: $750.

Image: Gramercy Park Hotel

If you are looking for cheaper hotel goods, Amy Bradley-Hole recommends heading to liquidators that purchase used hotel furniture. It turns out many hotels now redecorate every three years – which means a lot of great cabinets and end tables barely have a scratch on them and are available for a fraction of their original price.

Or, if you want to go the other way, there’s the option of selling your stuff to a hotel – at least if you are in Maastricht in the Netherlands. Dutch hospitality group La Bergère asked people to, “rummage through their attics, spare rooms and garages, and offer their unused objects for sale” for a new hotel they created in 2009.

For now, we might just feel luxurious while we camp out at Gramercy Park, making sure to bring our own iPod along for the ride.

We’re pretty much always ready for cocktail hour. Which is why we’re more than psyched that during our next layover at San Francisco International, we get to check out an exhibit in Terminal 1 that looks at the history of the in-flight cocktail.

On display are airplane bottles with great ’70s font, alongside glassware, coasters, swizzle sticks, drink menus, and cocktail napkins from yesteryear.

One of our favorite items is a set of KLM glasses shaped like Dutch houses. They’re filled to the brim with Bols Jenever gin and were used for serving first-class passengers in the 1980s.

Image: SFO Museum

1930s Wine glasses on Pan Am were also pretty darn impressive. Apparently, the end of prohibition meant Pan American Airlines was sure to have a champagne bucket at the ready.

The only thing missing was a mention of the Aviation Cocktail. Its obscure ingredients, including crème de violette and maraschino liqueur, make it one of our personal favorites. Airlines began serving it in 1916, and it sounds as if it would make you fly pretty high.

For now, we’ll just enjoy some of Virgin Airlines free in-flight cocktails (at least when we’re in the UK) and hope to fly through SFO soon.

Unlike any other building built in Russia at the time, the church was colorful, whimsical, and detailed in a way no one had ever seen before. It was named the ‘Cathedral of the Protection of Most Holy Theotokos on the Moat’. Lucky for us the church has survived since 1561 and goes by a much simpler name these days – St. Basil’s.

Located on Red Square, the church has been an UNESCO World Heritage site since 1990, and is one of the most iconic images of Moscow.
