365:SELF update

A week and a half ago I posted that I was asked to participate in posting an image of self to a private blog. It is really fascinating to see the other photos and how others interpret self.

For some art is their profession and the sketches and photographs are worth of hanging on gallery walls. Some allow us to see the view they have of everyday life. Others take us to far away lands, across oceans and earth my feet will never touch. While other write. (I love the written word and those who choose to write truly have a gift.)

I have tried to post the images I've contributed here, but after some thought I decided to create a blog that has these images alone. It is on the sidebar of this blog if you want to have a look. I'll no longer be posting these images here.

today i gathered w/ some of my dear friends to craft. we felted wool sweaters and sewed them into fingerless gloves. an afternoon of delight, creativity and community. thanks for letting me join and keep my wrists warm.

Last Saturday we had a beautiful afternoon to go hiking. We joined together with our lifegroup from church and for an afternoon we hiked, visited, shared and basked in the Autumn beauty of our Creator.

We have a couple of out buildings at our house and one we use for storage. I was out there a few weeks ago (putting away luggage from our time in RW) when I noticed rat poop and heard a bit of scurrying. I quickly dropped the luggage and bolted. NOT a fan of mice or rats or any rodent inside the house. I followed the advice of a friend, went to Mule Barn and picked up their strongest rat poison. Sorry PETA friends and rodent lovers - I'll call you to rescue the next visitor, but only if you promise to drop what you are doing and come quickly.

My dad came for a visit last night and stayed over night. This morning he helped me with a few loads of things in and out of the "rat" building. Being a brave daddy, he peeked inside a few boxes where all of the droppings were concentrated. What he found was the photo above. It really was quite fascinating. The rat had gathered Captain Jack Sparrow and the toy car from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, a pair of scissors, a leather luggage tag from Jonathan's suit case, many scraps of plastic, paper and cardboard, a stash of acorns 1/2 eaten and whole, ALL 6 of the bars of poison and insulation & leaves for warmth. We used it as a teaching moment for the boys, pointing out all of the parts of it's house. Although it was a good lesson and the boys thought it was really cool, I'm still really thankful it's dead and was thrown in the woods.

From the top left headed clockwise -- 3 loads of unfolded laundry piled on my half clothed and unmade bed - dishes from breakfast, snacks and lunch - sleeping on his bedroom floor with legos jsut out of his hand - the boys unmade bed, which has not had a "remember to make your bed" call from my lips - cold dish water that has been warmed no less than 3 times & needs more soap

We started our day by rereading the book and then the boys drew a self portrait dressed in a wolf costume. We checked the movie times only to find out that the only time it was showing in Branson was at 9pm. We would have to drive to Springfield if we wanted to catch it any earlier. So we did. We made crowns to wear and began our journey in our "boat" north.

As we drove I asked the boys different questions about the book. My favorite was, "How would you make friends with the Wild Things when you arrived on their land?" Chas said that he would build a giant nest and put everyones name on a piece of paper inside the nest. Then I would invite them all in and give everyone a crown. That's how I would do it, he finished.

Elliott started out by saying that he would stare them in the yellow eyes and tell them his name was Max. I asked him how Elliott would do it, not Max, and his answer changed. He then said, Oh, I'd give them a really hard hand shake and they would know I was in charge by how hard I could squeeze their hand. I'd squeeze it so hard it would become as small as mine and when they let go it would be come big again.

They flipped the question back to me how I would make friends. I said I'd fix a big meal with yummy dessert, I'd invite them for a dinner. We would have a delightful time and then we would then be good friends. Surely the way into the heart of a Wild Thing is through their tummy?

After the movie, we talked more about how the movie changed from "this really could happen" (non-fiction) to "only in my imagination" (fiction). As we talked they realized that when Max put on his wolf costume the transformation from one to the other began. They also said that the way he stood upon the counter in the kitchen and commanded his mom to feed him was really rude. Phew! I'm not sure how I'd handle it if they did that. I'd probably turn into a Wild Thing myself.

Many other feelings were discussed and I will admit that we all 3 cried as Max got back on his boat for home. Some more than others and at least 2 of us will admit to the tears. (C is a bit macho at his young age.) We talked about the feeling the different characters must have been having and if they dealt with them in good or bad ways. We laughed in the movie and as we talked about it after. It is a must see for any lovers of the book.

Off to ice our chocolate cake and make sure that our soup is still warm. We will enjoy it with our friends this evening and imagine that we are sharing it with Max in the comfort of his own home.

Where The Wild Things Are

We can't wait to go see the film tomorrow. But for today, we are reading and rereading the book (a favorite of mine and the boys), drawing our own wild things and watching little movies on youtube. The one below is one of our favorites. E likes the claymation. We are talking about what parts of the book could really happen and if the book is fiction or non-fiction. Much more of the book could really happen for my boys than I thought. Growing a jungle in your room could happen, but would just take many, many years.

I am no longer working as Jonathan's assistant. I wasn't really fired, but I like to joke with him that I was. He needed someone that would actually be in the office and not in Rwanda for 3 months. Rwanda won over an office, can you blame me? I couldn't be more thrilled with the decision we made. I get the chance to be the wife and partner in this big ministry adventure. I get to be a volunteer, but best of all I get to travel with him. When we, personally, are able to afford for me to go with him AND my amazing parents are able to watch the kids, I will get to travel and share with him in these trips.

We are in Laguna Beach, CA for the week with our dear friends Bruce and Sarah Brenon. Bruce is my brother's best friend from junior high school and they were the best men in each others weddings. Bruce & Sarah have shown interest in KAAC~R for awhile and Bruce has set up events in southern CA to help share the work we are involved with and help in the efforts of raising hte funds to build the camp. I've tried to express in words and coffee, photographs and treats from Rwanda what it means to us that they have done this...but really I'm unable to do so very well. Brenon Family ~ Thank you for opening your home, sharing your community with us and helping to further the work of KAAC in Rwanda. You are making an impact in the lives of the youth there that will be felt for generations to come.

Jonathan spoke at the chapter of Rotary Club where Bruce is a member this morning and tonight there is a dessert and coffee meeting set up at Sarah's parents house. We will share with friends, neighbors and members of their church the work of kaac~r. Tomorrow we will attend a cocktail party in the evening (bonus b/c I get to wear my favorite black dress) and maybe in the day they have another meeting, but I'm not totally for sure. On Friday we will head to visit an old friend of mine from high school, Eric, in Redondo Beach. He has arranged for us to meet with his church, but also I think we may make a pit stop at a chocolate festival in the area. We have a breakfast with my friend Mallory on Saturday morning and that evening I get to see another old friend, Laura who I went to Kanakuk with years ago. She and her husband live in Hollywood and are going to meet us for dinner. It's a jam packed week with business and pleasure all under the sunny sky of southern Cali.
