I stumbled upon an author by the name of Tiffany D. Jackson, whom I am now totally addicted to. Ms. Jackson is an author of young adult novels, but let me tell you, her books are for all adults, young and old alike. I am not a young adult, but I am still young (ha ha ha), and let me just say, I cannot get enough! The book that pulled me in, Monday's Not Coming, is the book that started this obsession for me, WOW! At first, the title threw me way off because I didn't read the jacket or any reviews; I just went straight to reading the book. This story is not just a mystery about a missing girl; it is a deep look at how society can overlook certain children. It is emotional, layered, and honestly, it stays with you after the last page.

Next, I moved on to Blood in the Water. This is a perfect summer read, and you never know what to expect. Just when I thought I had this one all figured out, plot twist. It is a story about a young girl whose father is in jail, and she goes to stay with some "family friends" for the summer on Martha's Vineyard. She decides to investigate the death of a boy, and of course, that investigation leads to secrets in everybody's closet. This was a page-turner; I finished it in one day. Gripping and definitely captured my attention.

Finally, I just finished reading White Smoke. Now, I was not going to read this book because I thought it was going to be about ghosts, and it sort of is, but I digress. Once I got past the first few pages, I had to find out how it was going to end, so I kept reading. The psychological suspense of it all, mixed with eerie haunted house vibes, and on top of that, what's going on in the creepy neighborhood, really. This one was more than a haunted-house story; it delves into mental health, family dynamics, and community realities in a very real way.

I went from 'Put Me On' to 'I'm Locked In,' starting with a recommendation for a good book, then moving on to the next, and so on. Next up, I'll be reading The Weight of Blood. So as you can see, once I read Monday's Not Coming, it was a wrap; I can't stop reading Ms. Jackson's books, in no particular order. That's how you know an author has you, and even though these books are categorized as young adult, don't let that fool you; these stories are layered, meaningful, and absolutely binge-worthy at any age.

Tiffany D. Jackson is becoming my favorite new author, not only because I like the genre but also because her stories are layered. Her books tap into real societal issues, highlighting the pressures young people face, and give voice to experiences often overlooked in the Black community, yet universal and relatable to everyone. And that's what I love the most, this isn't just entertainment, it's storytelling with a purpose.

Big Sky is Binge Worthy

I know, I know it's been a while. Unlike so many, I was extremely busy during the pandemic and didn't get to binge-watch any good shows, read any good books, or keep up on the latest in music. But now that I have found my rhythm in this chaotic world I have created for myself, I found time to binge-watch the first season of Big Sky. First things first, there is a spoiler so if you haven't seen the first season you should stop reading now. I am a big fan of crime dramas, especially when they have an element of mystery or thrill to them. Big Sky is a combination of crime drama and thriller so I enjoyed that about the first season. I was highly disappointed that Ryan Philippe's character did not last past the first few episodes.

I have to honestly say that I had not read about the series before binging so I was definitely drawn to the series with the promise of Philippe being a part of the cast. I will say that the show kept its momentum after losing Philippe and I was pleasantly surprised by that. Although I feel like the series was a little scattered in a sense, I wanted it to be a little more structured. I say that because from what's thrown at you, the show could have gone several different ways. I don't think the show needed so much layering but who am I to judge, I'm no scriptwriter. Having said that, it's not a terrible show and the plot was easy enough to follow. Considering this is a show based off of a series of books from C.J. Box, I'm surprised I watched before reading the books. As you should know by now, I like to read the book before watching the adaptation but this time I made an exception. I like the dynamic between Cassie and Jenny, how that relationship is formed, and how it develops is an interesting aspect. The show kept a consistent pace as far as keeping you on the edge of your seat wondering what would happen next. I give it a 3.5 out of 5 for binge-worthiness, if you're looking for something to watch, check out Big Sky!

Jordyn Woods Breaks Silence... Too Soon?

We here at Nina Monroe Says just finished watching Jordyn Woods explain herself on Jada Pinkett Smith's Red Table Talk. The question is, is it too soon or not soon enough? Any way you slice it, it is a lose-lose situation. Jordyn put herself in an incredibly difficult position, now, was it her intention to have an affair with Tristan Thomas and just not get caught or was it like she made it seem during the interview, a not so innocent mistake. As Kylie Jenner's best friend, Jordyn should have never gone to that party. It was inappropriate to be there and the fact that she didn't comprehend that at the time is questionable. However, it takes two to tango and we have yet to hear anyone say one thing about Tristan's role in all this. And why should they, he has done it before and has done it again, and will continue to do for as long as Khloe puts up with it.

She is furious with Jordyn and understandably so but the visceral that she is directing at this very young very immature girl seems a little misguided. Where is the anger for Tristan, no one has said anything about this man's behavior out of that camp? Everything from their sources has been Jordyn this and Jordyn that. Khloe even tweeted after the interview about Jordyn breaking up her family... Really, Jordyn did that all by herself, interesting. The thing is this, Tristan cheated on the mother of his first child with Khloe and Khloe flaunted the hell out that entire situation. As a matter of fact, it has been said that she stole Lamar Odom from the mother of his children. Now, this is all hearsay, we don't know any of this to be fact but we suggest that the next time Khole enters into a relationship, make sure the guy is single and we mean single single. No one deserves to be cheated on but karma is a cold-hearted evil bitch that will come for your ass every single time!

Liam Neeson Is in Hot Water, As He Should Be

By now everyone has seen the posts or heard the news regarding Liam Neeson's very racist statement, if not just Google his name. I am trying to understand why he is even trying to justify his statement, there is absolutely no justification for it. The person who conducted the interview in which he made this statement, actively tried to put some psychology behind it to justify him feeling that way. Are you kidding me, he actively went looking to kill any random black person because his friend was allegedly raped by a black man (I say allegedly because no other information corroborating the event was given). After the statement came out he tries to say he was not being racist, if that's not racism, wanting to harm or kill a person because of the color of their skin... Seriously are we even questioning this, really... I know many black people who have been viciously attacked by a white person and never not once have I ever heard any one of them say "I want to walk around and kill random white people." If I ever hear them say anything close to this I will definitely let them know they are being racist and they need to seek some professional help. There are bad people in the human race, every bad person in the world is not a black person. Why would you randomly go out and kill innocent black people because your friend was allegedly raped by a black man. All of you out there trying to provide justification for Liam Neeson, you all are worse than he is. No more Liam Neeson movies for me, and that's all I'm going to say about that.

Sharp Objects, HBO Series vs. Book

So I finally finished the Sharp Objects series on HBO, I made it a point to finish the book before I watched the series. I have to applaud HBO because the series stays true to the book, well almost. The series was a little drawn out but that is understandable because it takes a lot to stretch a book that could be a 2 hour movie into an 8 episode series. I will say although the series was a little dry and drawn out, for some reason it did keep my attention. My only disappointment was the ending, the book spelled out the ending a little more than the series did. But...maybe there will indeed be a season 2. Maybe that is why they left the ending in the series up to interpretation, or maybe it is what it is, a cheated ending. I mean, as long as that series was, HBO definitely had plenty of time to make sure the ending was more defined and I am curious to know why they didn't. Overall the book was definitely better than the series, however the series was good as well and if you are not a book reader, the series is good for those who enjoy good suspense! We give the series a 3.5 and the book a 4 out of 5.

Janet Jackson has resurfaced from her self-imposed hiatus with new music and a new tour. Fans and media alike are excited for the return of Ms. Jackson, as many have wondered where she has been and what she has been doing. Janet is married now so we can assume that she took time off to enjoy life with her husband. However we cannot forget that before she was married, Janet slowly began pulling away from the public eye after her brother Michael died in 2009. Whatever the reason, we are glad she is back and we would love to know what you all think about the new song and upcoming tour! Janet's Unbreakable tour kicks off in Vancouver August 31st and wraps in Hawaii November 12th.

We're going to keep it positive because we could go into the best Twitter beefs of 2014 but that would be so declasse! We only want to point out our highlights of 2014, sorry if you expected the norm. I could say that best album of the year for 2014 was U2 'Songs of Innocence' but no. Don't get us wrong U2 had a great album but we here at Nina Monroe loved 'Strut' by Lenny Kravitz and we also liked 'Ghost Stories' by Coldplay.

The best movie of 2014, they don't make movies like they used to but if we had to choose we would go with Maleficent, I mean it's Angelina Jolie what are you going to do?!? Seriously there were a lot of great movies for 2014, like Gone Girl, 300, Rise of an Empire, Ride Along, The Equalizer...... The list goes on and on but Maleficent has to be our pick just because we love the gory fairy tales! Best new television series of 2014 has to be 'How To Get Away With Murder.' You just didn't expect any of it and it kept you on the edge of your seat, how are they going to keep the series going after that explosive season?!?

Best dressed of 2014, we have to go with Beyonce just because of that white Michael Costello gown at the 2014 Grammy's. But let's face it she killed it all year and the instagram was insane so yes Bey is the taker for 2014 Best Dressed. Our favorite celebrity over at Nina Monroe for 2014 was Beyonce. I mean even when she has nothing coming out she stays fabulous and that 'On the Run Tour' was crazy so she wins 2014 hands down!

What Did We Really Expect From Lifetime's Aaliyah Biopic

First let me start by saying no one cast for the movie would have done Aaliyah justice. I don't know where you would find anyone who embodied that magic that lived within her, let alone come close to resembling her. Aaliyah had a look, sound, and movement that was all her own, designed specifically for her, it can never be duplicated. With that being said, the movie was a Lifetime movie and typical of what you would expect to see from a Lifetime movie. The Twitterverse was set on fire last night when the movie aired and I noticed in particular that people were uneasy about the casting. As I stated before no one could have done Ms. Aaliyah Dana Haughton justice. But let's think about it, how often do they get it right with casting biopics that are made for television, occasionally but not often right. Sometimes they get it right but often times the person never really looks the way we think they should look or how we remember them looking. Now had the movie gone to the big screen, well the money is there and that is way more times than not they get it right.

Many people were tweeting that the movie should have gone to the big screen. I can agree with that but when biopics hit the big screen you know that whoever wrote that script dug up the dirt for the movie. It's usually done tastefully but do we really think Aaliyah's family would want that for her. The movies that hit the big screen are usually backed by the family or someone with close ties to the dearly departed. Without the backing of the family I don't see how any biopic of Aaliyah would be successful. The family has always been against a movie about her life so for that reason this is what you get, a straight to television Lifetime original. No disrespect intended but for those of us who watch Lifetime originals religiously, the actors are not always the best and the scripts are sometimes subpar but its Lifetime what did the audience really expect.

P.S. Alexandra Shipp is a talented young actress and we hope that the criticism from the movie does not dissuade her in her future endeavors.

Lately I have live tweeted during award shows but I thought I would digest the VMAs overnight just to see what stood out to me. First and foremost Beyonce murdered that stage, she is a true performer and that body, oh my! Now that's how you rock a REAL booty, that's what a booty should look like, not fake and lopsided (shade no shade). Usher danced his behind off as usual, not really a fan of the song but I always love to see Usher dance, another true performer. Jesse J and Ariana Grande, that song, love it, those ladies can sang, would love the song even more if Nicki Minaj wasn't on it. The ladies were definitely peddling the flesh, some of it was trashy and some of it was classy! Jesse J, classy way to peddle that flesh and those legs!

Iggy Azalea and Rita Ora, I was into it, I liked that performance way more than I liked Nicki Minaj's Anaconda performance. Sam Smith is the truth, Taylor Swift is like a beautiful shiny red delicious apple but when you cut it open it's rotten to the core and smells like death. Sorry to be so harsh but that is just the impression I get from her, however I could be wrong. Maroon 5, always a pleasure! Winners and nominations I had no problem everyone was deserving, however I thought Wrecking Ball was two years old how did it win video of the year? Best dressed hands down was Blue Ivy with Jennifer Lopez close second, but JLO looked a little dry, hair and skin, all that money honey you should never look dehydrated, spray some mist or something.

Now if I didn't mention it, it didn't make an impression after digestion, just saying!

So I haven't blogged in a while and there are so many noteworthy topics I could be discussing like the passing of legendary ICON Ms. Maya Angelou. But here I am blogging about Rihanna and her nudity, I mean it's not like we haven't seen all she has before but this is too much. When is enough enough, honestly, how much attention do women who pull these theatrics need. Isn't talent enough any more, I usually wouldn't care about something like this but seeing other women applaud here on Instagram is disgusting. If you are a woman and you think it is okay for Rihanna to show up at the CFDA Awards practically naked then something is wrong with you. No I take that back because I don't want to be so judgmental, it is not my place to judge. So let me just say, something is wrong with me, it would never be okay for me to put my body on display for all the world to see just to get attention. And then to have other women applaud it, I would be ashamed of that alone. In the beginning we were intended to be in our natural state but that changed long ago and we should respect that and respect ourselves. Remember, how you see yourself is how everyone else is going to see you. How you treat yourself is how everyone else will treat you. Love yourself and stop the nonsense!

There is always a song that stands out during the summer months, it's usually fun and up-beat, something people enjoy hearing over and over again. It is no surprise to us that this year's summer anthem belongs to non-other than Mr. Robin Thicke. His song 'Blurred Lines' is not only fun and up-beat but it is also extremely sexy.

Nina Monroe has always been a huge fan of Mr. Thicke but we have realized that he is one of the most underrated R&B singers/writers of all time. As far as we can tell his been around since 2000 and has created some beautiful music but for some strange reason he has never seen this type of success, not even with 'Lost Without U'. This is a mystery because he is obviously talented, he writes, sings, plays piano, his voice is amazing.

Well, now with his hit 'Blurred Lines', Robin has exploded into the music stratosphere with this year's summer anthem. The song was original released on March 26, 2013 and to us it was an instant hit but it didn't seem to catch on with everyone else until now. Produced by Pharrell and featuring T.I. and Pharrell, 'Blurred Lines' is now a constant on the radio, it has topped the charts in many countries and is being heard by millions of people around the world. Congrats to Mr. Robin Thicke!

Sunday night the Women's Concert for Change aired and it was proof that when women do it they do it right. Everyone knows that Jennifer Lopez is not a sanger but she put on a great show and when she brought out Mary J. Blige, baby she did it for the people. Not to be out done, Beyonce killed it as always because she is a sanger and she puts on a show. On top of it all she brought out her husband none other than Mr. Carter himself. Women's concert for change was not only a show stopper it was a an event that raised awareness for Chime for Change, a community working for education, health, and justice for girls and women around the world. If you missed tonight's concert I have to say you missed the concert event of the season, the ladies shut it down while raising awareness.

In the last year or so it seems Amanda Bynes has been on a downward spiral. But what happened, how did she get to this point? Ms. Bynes was once considered one of the few child stars to survive the curse but now things have turned upside down. Or have they? While everyone seems to think Ms. Bynes is out of control and surely needs help, we here at Nina Monroe Says thinks its all an act.

At least we would hope so, we don't want to see anyone ruin their lives over drugs or go untreated if they have mental health issues. We really hope this is all just a ploy to get attention. We don't want to speak ill of anyone but the things Ms. Bynes is doing are way too obvious and becoming way too frequent. Whatever the case may be all the attention in the world isn't worth ruining your reputation and hopefully Ms. Bynes will pull herself together quickly!

For those of you who looking forward to flying on the new luxurious Dreamliner Jets, hold that thought. The FAA has grounded the fleet of planes after two separate incidents in which the battery malfunctioned. It has been over three decades since the FAA has grounded a fleet of planes for any reason and the Dreamliners will not be allowed back in the sky until the problem is fixed. Denver International Airport will be one airport that will offer non-stop flights from Denver to Japan on the Dreamliner once the FAA gives the go ahead.

I have contemplated coming out of retirement so many times but as I am a busy person and blogging in a positive manner has not been lucrative, I have restrained myself. However, after seeing Evelyn Lozada on Iyanla "Fix My Life" I thought it would be necessary to speak my peace. In my eyes Evelyn is a beautiful woman who doesn't know her worth for whatever reasons. She has fans who love her and I believe she made the right decision by walking away from her marriage. Although I do believe she and Chad loved each other, she set the tone from the beginning allowing him to be who he was and not demanding he be better than who he was prior to meeting her.

While there is never an excuse for a man to put his hands on a woman no matter what, I think they should have both known better. No matter your circumstance growing up, we as adults know right from wrong. So whether or not you had your mother there, your father there, or you grew up around abuse, we all know as adults what is right and what is wrong. Your circumstance is never a reason to allow yourself to lower your standards. Your circumstance is the reason you should have the highest of standards. GOD gives us trials and tribulations so we will have a testimony, so everyone is put into our lives for a reason.

I say to Ms. Lozada continue to use your voice to encourage other women (and men) to escape their abusive circumstances. I say to the world we have to help those who have been abused and the abusers at the same time. If we just help the victims we leave the abuser to move on and continue a pattern but if we help all involved we are eradicating the epidemic of domestic violence. I say to Chad, keep your head up, reach out to those welling to help with whatever issues you may have. I suggest prayer and meditation, but I feel that you have a good heart and you will be stronger, wiser, and better than ever if you focus and get right.
