The personification of Death existed in many different societies and religions around the world since ancient times. The Grim Reaper, or Death, is the most popular and known figure of death today. The Grim Reaper is popularly depicted as a skeletal figure wearing a dark robe or cloak with a hood. Also popularly known as the Angel of Death or Devil of Death, the job of the reaper was to help those people face that their death is near. Its most notable depiction is his carrying of the Scythe – an agricultural hand tool for mowing grass, or reaping crops. Though most of the concept artworks here in the list depicts the most popular characteristics of the Grim Reaper, some of the digital artists show a different look of the personification using their own imagination and own view of how Death, as a character, would look like.
