Google Art Project offers hi-res virtual gallery tours

Google has teamed up with some of the world's leading art museums to launch Art Project, a new web portal allowing visitors to take virtual, street view-style tours of their galleries and view super-high resolution images of some of the world's finest artworks.

Over the past 18 months, Google has worked with 17 leading museums including The Freer Gallery of Art Smithsonian, The National Gallery, London and Tate Britain, capturing over 1000 high resolution images of famous works of art. These include one massive 7-gigapixel image from each participating gallery, offering a staggering level of detail.

According to The AppBrain Blog:

It loads very quickly after tapping an app within AppBrain, and allows you to view all interesting information before deciding to go to the market to download an app. It not only shows the familiar thumbs-up thumbs-down reviews from the website (and allows you to post your own!), but also has a tab with the related apps of an app as shown in the two screenshots on the side. Very useful if you’re shopping around for an app and want to know what other similar apps are out there!

The new app page also allows you to really easily share apps with friends directly from your phone. The share button lets you share the app you’re viewing through any sharing app that’s installed on your phone, for instance Facebook or Gmail.

The only bad news is that the Fast Web Installer, which has now been integrated into the AppBrain app, has been disabled by Google in the latest update of the Android Market. Which means the fast web installer feature will soon be extinct. Why was this disabled? No clue. That only leads me to think that Google might just be updating the Android Market with a similar feature soon – let’s hope so because Google I/O was a long time ago.

As an alternative, Appbrain has added the “Fast Sync Widget” which is a simple 1×1 widget that allows syncing your phone to AppBrain possible from your launcher’s home screen.

Google URL shortener conquista la sua interfaccia web

Finalmente Google URL Shortner cammina sulle proprie gambe: abbandonata la Google Toolbar, è diventato una vera e propria applicazione standalone.

All’indirizzo goo.gl possiamo incollare qualsiasi URL web e ottenere indirizzi accorciati, corredati di statistiche per ogni URL generato: in particolare, possiamo analizzare il numero di clic, un elenco di fonti di traffico e referrers, alcune informazioni aggregate sui visitatori.

Funzioni interessanti?
- La generazione di un QR code univoco per ogni short URL.
- La possibilità di aggregare tutti gli URL brevi generati mentre siamo loggati nel nostro account Google (io, ad esempio, ci ho ritrovato diversi short URL generati tempo fa in Google Maps).
- Aggiungendo il segno + ad un URL breve generato con Google, siamo reindirizzati direttamente alla pagina di statistiche per quell’indirizzo (es. goo.gl/maps/Hj9k+).

Cosa manca?
Non sono ancora state rilasciate API ufficiali e non è possibile personalizzare gli URL come avviene invece con bit.ly, ma è sicuramente una piattaforma stabile e affidabile. Da Google annunciano anche l’aggiunta del rilevamento automatico di spam e un serio aumento della velocità del servizio.

Se utilizzi Google Chrome, puoi installare goo.gl URL Shortener, un’estensione non ufficiale che genera URL brevi e li copia nella clipboard. Per Firefox c’è un’estensione simile chiamata goo.gl lite.

Android Quick App: Quick Settings

One thing I love about Android is the ability to quickly set up shortcuts to menus in your Settings or simply having a widget that you can toggle to change things. Quick Settings bests both of these methods by having nearly everything you might want to change on your phone just a notification bar icon away (its the gear looking one). 3G, WiFi and GPS are the things I most often change on my phone, so it is great to have quick access to them. You can either toggle them on or off with the button on the right, or jump into each's menu by tapping on its name to the left.

The other really useful feature is easy access to the various sound levels on the phone. Android doesn't use a one-sound-level-fits-all system, so if I want to turn down my alarm volume (or any other volume), Quick Settings gets the job done elegantly and quickly. You can even toggle between silent or vibrate settings. In addition, it shows free RAM and memory from your microSD card. It is available now for free on the Market. Reboot in fastboot mode

App Review: Lava Ball 3D

If you are looking for a marble-rolling, maze-traveling game, Lava Ball 3D is the game for you.

Please note: you will not be able to run this on 1st generation Android devices. I would only run this game with at least a 1GHz processor. I tried it on a MyTouch 3G and it locked on the level select screen. I then reviewed it on an EVO and it ran like a champ. It seems the lag is caused by the lava background.

The free version allows 4 levels of game play. The full version offers 32.

The are 4 modes: Preview, Practice, Arcade, and Hardcore.
Preview mode only allows you to view the map by scrolling around to find all the gems before playing.
Practice mode doesn't award points and you re-spawn when you die. There are no points awarded in this mode.
Arcade mode requires you to colled all green gems within a specific time limit. When you die, you lose $50 and re-spawn from the last gem.
Hardcore mode requires you to collect all the purple gem with in a specific time limit. Purple gems can be much more difficult collect than the green. When you die in the mode, you lose. No re-spawning.

The game play is truly Marble Madness meets Labyrinth, as mentioned on the developers site. It is very challenging to grasp the controls at first. The control you have over the ball is incredible. You can drop the ball over a side and bring it back to collect gems. When you fall into the Lava there is a obnoxious scream each time without an option to disable sound. You have to turn down the media volume to disable. The game is fun, but VERY challenging.
