Summer Camp Registration Time

Registrations are now being accepted for Nipissing Area's Annual Summer Camp for Scouts and Cubs, youth ages 8 to 14.

Scout youth and non-Scouting youth are welcome to attend the camp, Aug. 9 to 13, at Camp Wirribara.

Since an unexpected snowstorm stalled Saturday's Scoutrees at Laurier Woods, Scouter Bernie Stockermans has re-scheduled the event to Sunday, May 16 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.

The schedule will be:

1:00 p.m. - First North Bay
1:30 p.m. - Third Widdifield
2:00 p.m. - West Ferris
2:30 p.m. - First Callander

And don't forget your shovels, work gloves and water.

Scoutrees is Saturday May 8 at Laurier Woods. We'll meet at the city's public works yards off Franklin Street. See the map.

Start times are:

9 a.m. - First North Bay
9:30 a.m. - Third Widdifield
10 a.m. - West Ferris
10:30 a.m. - First Callander

All participants should bring shovels, work gloves, and water. Older youth can dig the holes, and younger or smaller youth can fill in the earth around the roots. Hot dogs and juice will be available after the plant.

* This year Nipissing Area Scouting youth with the co-operation of the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority and the Lake Nipissing Stewardship Council will plant trees for Scoutrees on Saturday May 8 at Laurier Woods.

We will plant approximately 400 four- to five-foot red maples, and another 100 smaller shrubs. In addition to digging slightly deeper holes than for the seedlings normally planted for Scoutrees, planters will need to spread some topsoil and/or woodchips around the trees. Water may be available to water the plants.

Youth should wear their uniforms, and bring, if possible, a shovel, bucket, work gloves and drinking water. Hot dogs and refreshments will be provided after the event. Sections may choose to participate in Jamboree on the Trails (JOTT) along the Laurier Woods trails following Scoutrees.

* First Callander Scout Group will hold a fundraising pancake breaksfast/brunch, Sunday, April 11, 8 a.m. to noon at the Royal Canadian Legion Hall, at 345 Lansdowne St. in Callander. Tickets are $7 per person, $3 for children 7 and younger.

* Volunteers are needed for Scoutrees BBQ at Sears in Northgate Square, Saturday April 17. Contract Scouter Anna Wright for more information.

* Registration information for Nipissing Area's annual summer camp will be available by the end of April and distributed at Motor Madness. Please ensure all Cubs and Scouts in your section receive the information. Volunteers are still needed to run the camp.

* All Scouters and Scouting youth are invited to attend a Chief Scout Ceremony, Monday, May 17, at North Bay City Hall. Those planning to attend should be there by 6:15 p.m., as the ceremony will begin at 6:30 sharp. Refreshments will follow the ceremony at Trinity United Church Hall. Congratulations to First North Bay Scout William Steel.

* Environment Canada has donated a weather radio to Camp Wirribara. The radio which will be secured in the kitchen, should be turned on when the camp is in use and will alert listeners to severe weather and sudden weather changes.

* Senior Scouts, Venturers and Scouters without first aid training can complete the Standard First Aid Course, Satuirday and Sunday, March 27 and 28. The cost will be $35. Participants will need to provide their own lunch. A location will be announced shortly. For more information or to register, contact Scouter Anna Wright.

* West Ferris Scout Group will hold a fundraising spaghetti dinner beginning 5 p.m., Saturday, March 27 at Holy Name of Jesus Church hall, 895 Memorial Dr., by Lee Park.

* Sears Canada will sponsor a BBQ at Northgate Square, Saturday April 17 as part of their effort to promote Scoutrees. Adult and youth volunteers will be required for the event.

* Nipissing Area Scoutrees will take on a new approach this May 8. Instead of planting seedlings to reforest a bush area, Nipissing Area will be working with the North Bay-Mattawa Conservation Authority to plant larger trees in North Bay. Several sites are under consideration and discussions are continuing.

* Nipissing Area's annual Scouters Dinner will be held in the private room at the King's Buffet, Saturday June 19 with drinks at 5:30 p.m. and dinner at 6.

* Volunteer leaders are still required for Nipissing Area's annual summer Cub and Scout camp, Aug. 9 to 13. For more information or to volunteer contact Scouter Anna Wright.

* Mentors Weekend/Woodbadge I will be held Friday, Sept. 24 to Sunday Sept. 26 at Camp Wirribara. The weekend is open to new leaders and Scouters without Woodbadge I, as well as experienced Scouters willing to share those experiences and Scouting fellowship.

* Nipissing Area's annual Apple Day fundraiser has been scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 16.

Motor Madness Edges to the Pole Position

Each package contains information about the section's event, registration, vehicle specifications, race day rules, and a badge/pin exchange (Troop package, Pack package).

Motor Madness 2010 will be held at West Ferris Secondary School, April 24.

Motor Madness 2010

This year's event is scheduled for Saturday, April 24, at West Ferris Secondary School with Scout Trucks taking to the track in the morning and Kub Kars in the afternoon.

The estimated price is $6 per participant. Lunch is not included, though a canteen selling lunch and snacks will be available.

Advanced registration for local groups will be Thursday, April 22, at Silver Birches School, 22 Marshall Ave., 7 to 8:30 p.m. Out-of-town groups can register the day of the event.

* A Nipissing Area Winter Pack Camp will be held Friday, Feb. 19 to Sunday, Feb. 21, at the former Ecole Heritage/Sunset Park School on Lakeshore Drive. For more information contact Scouter Marc St-Jules.

* Nipissing Area Scouting youths and leaders are invited to celebrate Scouting at a Church Parade, Sunday, Feb.28. Meet in the Trinity United Church Hall no later than 10:15 a.m. for a parade to the church. Service will be followed by a campfire.

* Nipissing Area Winter Troop Camp information is available here. The camp is scheduled for Friday, March 5 to Sunday, March 7.

* A Standard First Aid/CPR course for Scouts (preferrably second- and third-year Scouts) is tentatively scheduled for Saturday and Sunday, March 27 and 28. Contact Scouter Gord Ford for more information.

* The Sears Scoutrees promotion has been set for Saturday April 17 at Northgate Square. More details will be announced later.

* Leaders are needed for Nipissing Area Summer Camp, scheduled for Monday, August. 9 to Friday August 13. For information contact Scouter Anna Wright. Youth registrations will be available by the end of April. Cost will be $150 for Cubs and Scouts, and $200 for non-members.

* Next month's Scouters Club will be held a week later than normally, on 8 p.m., Wednesday, March 10, at Trinity United Church.

* Trinity United Church and First North Bay Scout Group will hold a Religion in Life course for Scouters beginning this month. The course, to be held at the church, will be spread over three days, Jan. 24 and 31 and Feb. 1., from noon to 1:30 p.m. There is no cost, advance registration is not necessary and participants are welcome to brown bag a lunch.

* Trinity United will also host Nipissing Area's annual Church Parade, Feb, 28, to mark Scout-Guide Week.

* Nipissing Area's Annual Winter Troop Camp will be held near the end of Songis Road, March 5, 6 and 7. The theme is Green Winter Camping and groups are challenged to create the most environmentally friendly winter campsite possible. Troops must come self-contained, though hay and rough firewood (bring saws and axes) will be available. The cost is $10 per youth.

* Motor Madness, organized this year by West Ferris Grout Group, is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, April 24 at West Ferris Secondary School. Confirmation and additional details will be released when available.

* This year's Beaver Buggy Bustout will be an expanded event, held separately from Motor Madness. The Bustout is tentatively scheduled for Saturday, April 10 at Trinity United Church Hall.

* March Scouters Club has been rescheduled to March 10.

* The annual Christmas Sing-a-long at the psychiatric hospital will begin at 1:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 5.

* Standard First Aid has been rescheduled for Jan. 9 and 10, in the new year.

* Third Widdifield Colony Scouter Karen Deveau earned her Gilwell Necker and beads at a recent Woodbadge II course at Woodland Trails. Way to go Karen!

* A new group sponsor or organizer is needed for the 2010 Motor Madness event. Contact Scouter Anna Wright.

* The Nipissing Badge Office will purchase the new Ontario badges and a supply of Northern Ontario badges. To purchase these or other badges, contract Scouter Brian Trivett.

You're Invited to Meet the Chief Commish

Scouts Canada Chief Commissioner Steve Kent and director of membership development Rob Gallaher will be in Sudbury the evening of Wednesday, Oct. 21 to meet Northeastern Ontario Scouters and to discuss ScoutingNow changes.

The event will be held at Knox Presbyterian Church, 73 Larch St., 6:30 to 9 p.m.

All Scouters are invited to attend, though they should RSVP to Sudbury Area Commissioner Karen Luczak by Oct. 19.

Almost Ticking Time Capsule

The 75^th Anniversary Time Capsule clock is ticking. . . almost.

Groups and sections have only a short time to prepare a memento (if they haven’t already, or want to add another item for the new Scouting year) for the time capsule which will be sealed and not re-opened until Nipissing Area’s centennial in 2034.

The capsule will be sealed and placed at Camp Wirribara Oct. 24. Any group or section wishing to add to the capsule should contact Scouter Ken Sitter before that date.

Items already submitted include a flag from Nipissing Area summer camp, a First Callander mug, a photo album from Third Widdifield Pack, a mini-first aid kit from West Ferris Pack and more. Items should be small and/or flexible and able to fit into a four-inch diameter ABS pipe.

Religion in Life

Scouter Anne Graham, from First North Bay Pack,has set up a Religion in Life course for Venturers, Scouts and Cubs at Trinity United Church in November.

The course will run Sunday, Nov. 1, Sunday Nov. 8, and Sunday, Nov. 22 from noon till 2 p.m. Depending on numbers, both Level 1 and Level 2 badges will be covered. Participants will receive the Christian Crest.

The course is open to anyone wishing to take the course but if they do not attend a church (of their choice) on a regular basis they will be required to attend Trinity for the three Sundays of the course.

Scouters are requested to talk to their Venturers, Scouts and Cubs, and let Scouter Anne know (by e-mail or at Scouters' Club on Oct. 7) if they have anyone interested so the church know can staff accordingly.

The group can be used to help share information between Scouters, sections and groups, and co-ordinate activities.

Membership is open to all with a Facebook account.

Gary Waycik, Gone Home

Gary Waycik, council executive director for Northern Ontario, as well as Saskatchewan and Manitoba, died in a traffic accident in Sudbury, Thursday, Aug. 19.

Gary served as a field executive in Northwestern Ontario from 1991 to 1997 prior to becoming its executive director. When Northeastern Ontario Region was amalgamated with Northwestern Ontario Region, Gary was appointed as its first executive director and became known to many Nipissing Area Scouters. When Scouts Canada restructured in late 2004, Gary was again promoted to become one of the first multi-council executive directors.

Gary is survived by his wife Toni (also a Scouter) and his four children, Susan, Daniel, Jeff and Peter.

Scouts Canada has created a memorial page to Gary on its website and all are welcome to sign the guestbook.

The shop, at 111 Durham St., will only be open 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, from this week until August 20.

Girl Guides, Pathfinders, Scouts and Venturers dance at Rendezvous 2009 this past long weekend at the Sturgeon Falls Rod and Gun Club. Despite the amazing three-season weather, all survived the challenges of the Amazing Survival Race. For more pictures see the slideshow.
