The ladies and gentlemen of Nisbet Plantation always look forward to celebrating the holidays with our guests. It is always a special time of year. A “Great Getaway” to one of the “Best Beaches”

As the temperatures drop in the United Kingdom, many are dreaming of a warm tropical locale. Nisbet Plantation Beach Club on Nevis may be just what you need according to two recent articles in the UK press.

The Guardian
The Guardian turned to its readers to cultivate the “Ten of the best Caribbean beaches.” Our white sand beach on Nevis was acknowledged among The Guardian readers favorite beaches in the Caribbean. Reader fabchick raved about our “permanent breeze… three great ways of dining and zingy cocktails,” and rooms that make for a romantic experience.

The Telegraph
In the article on “Great all-inclusive Caribbean holidays,” a holiday at Nisbet Plantation is listed as one “of the best options available for the December 2013 through to the April 2014 period, when the Caribbean’s weather is at its best.”

July Employee of the Month

Congratulations to Glendina Liburd who was named our July 2013 Employee of the Month. Glendina is recognized for her constant smile and positive attitude when interacting with her peers and guests.

You may recognize her from your morning breakfast at Coconuts or your afternoon lunch at Sea Breeze. Perhaps she convinced you to order that delicious meal. Glendina has been a server at Nisbet Plantation for 19 years and enjoys recommending dishes for guests to try.

She is especially deserving of this award for her willingness to go above and beyond her own duties. Glendina even assisted in the role of supervisor when Violet was out sick for several months.

Executive Director of Guest Services Steve Tyson presented Glendina with the award. Although we were unable to recognize Glendina until now, her superb service continues to shine.

New Seaborne Service to Nevis

We have exciting news for those of you planning to travel to Nevis in the New Year. Seaborne Airlines recently announced the addition of a new service from San Juan (SJU) to St Kitts (SKB) and Nevis (NEV).

The daily service is scheduled to launch January 15, 2014. With late afternoon flights departing from San Juan and early morning flights from St. Kitts and Nevis, the flight schedule is convenient for many connecting flights.

Depart St Kitts: 5:10pm, arrive in Nevis: 5:30pm

Word is getting out about our unspoiled, small island home. In the past few weeks, the Travel Sections in daily newspapers in the US and Canada have been abuzz about our friendly residents and tranquil setting.

“On Nevis, old plantations now house luxury lodging,” writer Janis Turk refers to Nevis as “a classic colonial Caribbean experience” that is “breezy and beachy, tropical and tranquil.” She shares details on six places for visitors to rest their head, including our historical plantation inn on the beach.

Writer Necee Regis documents her visit to our beautiful island home. In her article, “Taking it slow and simple on the Caribbean island of Nevis,” she describes settling in to Nevis life “as easy as kicking off (her) shoes.” From roaming sheep and vervet monkeys, to a visit to Lime for a cold Carib beer, Regis highlights many of the unique qualities of Nevis that we and our guests treasure dearly.

In “Untouched by time’s march,” writer Stephanie Whittaker shares that it is what Nevis lacks, such as “cruise ships disgorging hordes of tourists, traffic jams and crowded beaches,” “that makes this tiny Caribbean country a refreshing refuge.” She describes the island experience as “no pressure to do anything other than relax and enjoy.” We agree – why it’s #101 on our list of Things to Do.

Cocktail Recipe: Midnight Creeper

Happy Halloween!

In the spirit of the holiday, we asked our bartenders to recommend a “spooktacular” Halloween cocktail. One of our long-time bartenders, Dan Perkins, suggests the Midnight Creeper and is sharing his cocktail recipe.

Serve the grown-ups this ghoulishly good drink for a Halloween treat that is sure to be a hit.

Nisbet Plantation’s Midnight Creeper Cocktail Recipe

• 1.5 oz CSR Rum

• ¼ oz Brandy

• 1.5 oz Passion Fruit Puree

• Pineapple Juice

Mix the CSR Rum, brandy and passion fruit puree. Pour the mixture over ice into a clear or festive glass. Top with pineapple juice and garnish with a fresh pineapple wedge.

Nisbet Plantation has been named among the “Top 25 Resorts in the Caribbean” in the Condé Nast Traveler 2013 Readers’ Choice Awards. With a score of 94.9, Nisbet ranked #3 in the region and is the top-ranking resort on our two-island nation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

Thanks to you and the other Condé Nast Traveler readers, this is our 5th consecutive year ranking in the top three on the list. It is truly a great honor to be continually recognized among such esteemed properties.

Twice as Nice: The Great House Once Again Among the Best Hotel Restaurants in the World

We are honored to announce that the Great House at Nisbet Plantation has been recognized by The Daily Meal as one of “101 Best Hotel Restaurants Around the World.” This is our second consecutive year on the notable list.

The Daily Meal recognizes restaurants around the world “that have proven to stand out as excellent destinations for a memorable meal.” Selection involved input from “a panel of experienced bloggers, restaurant critics, and other food and lifestyle writers from around the world to vote for their favorite restaurants.”

Even more impressive is the fact that our historic dining venue is the only restaurant on St. Kitts and Nevis to make the list and one of just seven Caribbean hotel restaurants featured.

Editors at The Daily Meal were impressed with our romantic setting, where guests may dine “on the screened-in veranda or indoors in a plantation-style dining room awash in candelight.” Executive Chef Tony’s creations were also a highlight, adding “Grilled mahimahi with peas and rice is a guest favorite, as is the Caribbean lobster.”

St. Kitts and Nevis' Leading Boutique Hotel

At this weekend's World Travel Awards, Nisbet Plantation Beach Club was honored as St Kitts and Nevis' Leading Boutique Hotel 2013.

This is the first time Nisbet Plantation has been recognized in this category. In 2010 and 2007, Nisbet Plantation was honored as St Kitts and Nevis' Leading Resort.

Celebrating its 20th anniversary, the World Travel Awards is acknowledged across the globe as the ultimate travel accolade and the hallmark of industry excellence. The Wall Street Journal has hailed the World Travel Awards as "the Oscar's of the travel industry."

British Kayakers Break at Nisbet During 800 Mile Paddle for Charity

Four intrepid British kayakers stopped off in Nevis recently while on an epic 800-mile kayak trip from Grenada to Puerto Rico. While in Nevis they enjoyed a much-deserved break at Nisbet Plantation.

The four friends, Michael Houston, Edmund Magnus, Tom McAlpine and Woody Dewar, known as the KX Kayakers, decided to take on this ambitious trip to give them a taste of adventure and to raise money for charity. The team is hoping to raise £40,000 for the Centre for Children's Rare Disease Research due to open at Great Ormond Street Hospital in London in 2017 and the Lyla Nsouli Foundation for Children’s Brain Cancer Research.

The kayakers paddled the 45 miles from Montserrat before landing at Oualie Beach and came to enjoy some of the renowned local cuisine at our Great House restaurant. En route to Nevis they saw the rare sight of two turtles mating and unfortunately, one of the tandem sea kayaks overturned just south of Nevis. The team spent three days on Nevis giving their bodies a chance to recover and exploring the island including its beaches and plantation inns.

Then they were off again, heading to St Barths, on their longest journey to date, including paddling through the night. They are hoping to reach Puerto Rico by August 20 making them the youngest team to ever do the route.

The trip has been physically demanding with the team suffering sore hands and shoulders as well as a few blisters, open wounds and rashes. The medic Edmund Magnus has also had a bout of sea sickness. When asked what they were looking forward to next they said, “sleep and getting back to normal life.”

Save the Date: 2013 Nevis Triathlon on November 16

Every year, the island of Nevis hosts dedicated athletes from all over the globe for a challenging triathlon in paradise. 2013 marks 12 years of triathlon events on the island; however, this year is unique.

The Nevis Tourism Authority and the St. Kitts & Nevis Triathlon Federation have teamed up with 2-time Ironman World Champion Chris “Macca” McCormack. The new MaccaX Nevis Triathlon will be held on Saturday, November 16, 2013.

Traditional to its form, the triathlon will challenge athletes to a 1.5K swim, 60K bike, a 10K run and a standard sprint distance. Macca has designed the course, creating a route that will showcase the beauty of our Caribbean home in a different light than prior races.

The triathlon is part of a three-day sporting event, which also includes a swim event and 5K charity run.

Chris (Macca) McCormack has commented to the media on the event, stating “I am looking forward to returning to Nevis to race again, the island is magic, and the ‘course’ presents a unique challenge in an amazing environment. I have raced in some incredible places in my life, but Nevis is seriously spectacular. It is such a beautiful, energetic and ‘community feel’ race in paradise and I am so happy that Triathlon has returned to the West Indies. ”

If you would like to race in paradise, you can register for the triathlon online by visiting Nevis Triathlon or Nevis Cycle Club. The course is designed for experienced triathletes, but a short course will be available for beginners.

Best Cheesecake and Other Honors at the 2013 Nevis Culturama

The activities for the 2013 Nevis Culturama Festival have come to a close, but the celebrations are very much alive here at Nisbet Plantation. The annual celebration, called the Caribbean's Greatest Lime, proudly showcased the cultural traditions of the Island of Nevis through various pageants, parades, contests and more.

We are pleased to announce that our participating team members have once again made us proud. Pastry Chef Danilo won the following honors in the Fruit Festival Competition:

1st Place: Best Cheesecake for his chilled mango, soursop layered cheesecake. This marks the 4th year in a row Nisbet has won the cheesecake competition.
2nd Place: Best Pie for his delicious banana, coconut cream pie.

Chef Tony also entered the competition with his popular and refreshing Soursop Ice Cream, a recipe that has won him first place in the Ice Cream Competition in prior years.

In addition, Grounds Supervisor Andrew “Hollywood” Nisbett made it all the way to the Finals of the Senior Kaiso Competition. A previous “Nevis Calypso King,” Nisbett did a tremendous job with lyrics, singing and dancing.

The ladies and gentlemen of Nisbet Plantation congratulate our participants on their impeccable sportsmanship and creativity. We are already looking forward to next year’s Nevis Culturama 40!

American Airlines Adds Flights from Miami to St. Kitts, Changes Schedule from New York-JFK

Good news for travelers in the US seeking sun and sand at Nisbet Plantation this winter. Getting to St. Kitts and Nevis will be a little easier thanks to new flights and schedule changes on American Airlines.

Beginning November 21, 2013, American Airlines will add two non-stop flights to St. Kitts from Miami. The new seasonal flights will run on Thursday and Saturday. This new service is in addition to the existing daily non-stop service from Miami to St. Kitts and the twice daily seasonal service on Friday and Sunday, which was added last year.

The AA seasonal flights depart Miami International Airport (MIA) at 4:45 p.m. and arrive in St. Kitts at 8:35 p.m. every Thursday through Sunday. The return flights depart St. Kitts at 8:40 a.m. and arrive in Miami at 11 a.m. every Friday through Monday.

Also beginning November 21, 2013, American Airlines is changing the non-stop service from New York (JFK) to St. Kitts. The flights now depart on Wednesday and Saturday, returning Thursday and Sunday. Furthermore the departing flights from JFK are now scheduled in the afternoon, allowing for more connections in New York.

The St. Kitts flight will now depart JFK at 4:30 p.m. and arrive in St. Kitts at 9:40 p.m. every Wednesday through Saturday. The return flight departs St. Kitts at 9:40 a.m. and arrives in JFK at 1:25 p.m. every Thursday through Sunday.

St. Kitts is just a short, scenic boat ride away from Nevis, and airport transfers from either St. Kitts or Nevis is included on stays of five nights or more.

June Employee of the Month

Please join us in congratulating Pulmattie Ross, who was named Employee of the Month for June 2013. Pulmattie has been a member of the Nisbet family for a year and a half, and is currently the Front Office Receptionist.
She was recognized for many qualities that contribute to her hard work and dedication to Nisbet Plantation. Front Office Supervisor Jamilah Jeffers (pictured on right) presented her with the award.

Pulmattie is always willing to assist others, even on her days off. She is also an independent individual who takes initiative to get things done. It is through this attribute that we have discovered her creative side, which she puts to great use in designing flyers and information for guests. If you subscribe to our eNewsletter, you know that “Beyond the Avenue” was Pulmattie’s idea and the winner of our employee newsletter re-naming contest.

In addition to these attributes, Pulmattie stands out with her bright and adventurous personality. Guests often ask for her by name and many describe her as a great, fun-loving person. On her time off Pulmattie enjoys hiking, jet skiing and snorkeling.

Friends Share a “Memory-making Holiday”

As you may know, year-round we invite guests to share their favorite photos and vacation memories in our photo contest.

A recent entry was from guest Nancy Hall, who shared this touching story and photo:

“Patterson is one of Nisbet Plantation’s treasures. Each night at dinner, he would escort my partially-sighted friend Jo-anne, into dinner with never a mis-step. His respect and compassion was appreciated.”

It is the genuine care, such as this, that is delivered every day by every one of our team members that makes us extremely proud of the ladies and gentlemen of Nisbet Plantation. We believe that they are truly the best in the Caribbean.

We were so moved by Nancy’s story that we reached out to her for more details, and we wanted to share it with you.

“My friend Jo-anne and I have been close friends for 54 years. Even though we have lived on opposite sides of Canada we have always kept in touch. Jo has had many challenging health issues with her eyes. The last year has been especially tough. She had to give up her home in cottage-country Ontario when her sight deteriorated to almost nil. While we are all hopeful, of course, that her vision will improve enough to have a corneal transplant, the future is uncertain.

We decided that this was the time to do a memory-making holiday together. Being at Nisbet Plantation was like being wrapped up in luxurious comfort. The physical beauty, the chef’s creations and the amenities were only surpassed by caring and courteous staff members, like Patterson. Patterson escorted her every night through the great house to our table on the verandah. We hope to return.”

Thank you Nancy for allowing us to be a part of this very special holiday. We hope to have the pleasure of welcoming you and Jo-anne back to Nisbet Plantation.

Tradewind Aviation to Launch New Air Service to Nevis

Beginning this fall, there will be a new option for traveling to Nevis.

Tradewind Aviation has announced "Premium Scheduled" nonstop service from San Juan, Puerto Rico (SJU), to Vance W. Amory International Airport (NEV) on Nevis. The new service will provide a luxury, first-class option to conveniently arrive on Nevis, just minutes away from Nisbet Plantation.

There will be two daily flights to Nevis and return flights to San Juan will be available five days a week. The new seasonal service begins October 31, 2013 and will run through May 15, 2014. Guests will fly in air-conditioned comfort on board a modern Pilatus PC-12 and enjoy complimentary refreshments, snacks, wine and beer.

To celebrate the launch, Tradewind Aviation is offering a special introductory rate of $350 one way plus tax. Flights may be booked directly on Tradewind Aviation's website as well as on Kayak, Expedia, Travelocity and Trip Advisor.

Nevis will be the third Caribbean destination with scheduled service offered by Tradewind Aviation. The airline already offers scheduled flights to St. Barts and will launch service to Anguilla in the fall.

Tradewind Aviation also operates executive private charters around the world and provides premium scheduled service to Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket from the Northeast.

Culturama Festival 2013: It’s Time for the Caribbean’s Greatest Lime!

Today marks the official launch of the 2013 Nevis Culturama Festival, an annual celebration that lasts for 13 days and showcases the cultural traditions of the Island of Nevis.

Number 58 on our list of 101 Things to Do on St. Kitts and Nevis, Culturama offers exciting activities for locals and guests alike – from poetry and pageants to contests and parades.

Several of the ladies and gentlemen at Nisbet Plantation will be participating in this year’s activities. Grounds Supervisor Andrew “Hollywood” Nisbett was crowned king in a previous Culturama Calypso Contest and will compete for the title again this year.

Nisbet’s Chef Tony and Pastry Chef Danilo will also compete to defend their titles at the Department of Agriculture Fruit Festival on Friday, August 2. At last year’s Fruit Festival, the chefs collectively won titles for the best cheesecake, ice cream and decorated fruit cake.

The celebrations lead up to the final event on Tuesday, August 6, when the festival puts on the colorful and lively Cultural Street Parade at 1:00 p.m.

This much-anticipated event is always fun to experience and we’ll once again be organizing an outing for guests to attend this year’s parade.

In Season and On the Menu: Mango

Summer is mango season on St. Kitts and Nevis. In fact, several varieties of this tropical fruit are native to the island. And they are all ready to be picked from the trees and enjoyed!

Did you know that there are two mango trees on our 30-acre property? In addition to our own harvest, Chef Tony sources mangoes from local growers and is highlighting the fruit in several dishes on our restaurant menus.

Start your day with sliced mango, freshly squeezed mango juice or a plate of Mango Pancakes at Coconuts - a guest favorite! You may also savor mango at lunch and dinner, as it's an ingredient in our salad dressing, chutney and salsa.

Or satisfy your sweet tooth and indulge after dinner with a bowl of locally churned mango ice cream, mango mousse or Pastry Chef Danilo's mango cheesecake with sauce.

We hope you enjoy our local mangoes as much as we do!

Please join us in congratulating Terrence "Terry" Pemberton, who is our Employee of the Month for May 2013.

Terry is a Kitchen Steward and learning disciplines in the kitchen under Chef Tony. This is Terry's first hospitality job and he has only been a member of the team for six months, but is already a shining star.

Chef Tony shares that Terry takes initiative, is reliable (he has never missed a shift), well organized and industrious. His co-workers enjoy working with him and he's always willing to lend a helping hand.

When he's not in the kitchen at Nisbet Plantation, Terry likes to relax on one of the beautiful beaches on Nevis with his friends.

Honored in Travel + Leisure 2013 World's Best Awards

Nisbet Plantation is named to the
Travel + Leisure 2013 World's Best list

Nisbet Plantation Beach Club has just been named among the Top Hotels in the world and Top Resorts in the Caribbean in the prestigious Travel + Leisure 2013 World's Best Awards readers' survey.

Our intimate Nevis resort ranked No. 3 among the Top Resorts in the Caribbean, Bermuda, and the Bahamas, and is the top-rated resort on the two-island federation of St. Kitts and Nevis.

With an overall score of 94.67, Nisbet Plantation also earned a No. 22 spot among the Top 50 Hotels in the world.

This marks our fourth consecutive appearance on the World's Best Awards list. Last month, Nisbet Plantation was recognized by Travel + Leisure as among the World's Best Service.

Nancy Says "Pass it On"

Over the years, we have learned that Nisbet Plantation has some very special, generous guests.

Recently one guest, Nancy McCaw took this generosity to a new level.

Nancy and her partner Roger Pike from Strathaven in Scotland were on holiday at Nisbet Plantation when Nancy took a photo of a pelican flying along the beach. Nancy entered the photo for Nisbet’s photo contest and won a $100 drinks voucher.

Nancy was delighted with the win, but realized that she would not be revisiting Nisbet Plantation until 2014 and would not be able to use the voucher. So she and Roger came up with a great idea.

Nancy says, “It was a spur of the moment idea to ask the good folks at Nisbet to pass the voucher on to someone else and we thought it would be nice for it to be given to a honeymooning couple from the UK to add to their celebration.”

Honeymooners Clare and Anil Ekanayake

We, of course, obliged and passed the voucher on to Anil and Clare Ekanayake from Kennington in London. The couple had chosen Nisbet Plantation for their honeymoon after seeing the photos of a friend’s wedding at the resort and hearing descriptions of the beach, the service and the food. Receiving Nancy and Roger’s generous gift helped to make their honeymoon even more special.

Clare told us, “We were seriously excited to get the voucher and felt very lucky. It was a lovely generous thing that they did and it was not something they needed to do! It was a once in a life holiday for us and it seriously helped us to celebrate with bubbles and cocktails!!”

Clare and Anil wrote to thank Nancy and Roger and sent them a photo of them enjoying their generosity.

Cocktail Recipes: Plantation Slide and Nevisian Sunset

and Nevisian Sunset Cocktails

A past guest recently asked on Nisbet Plantation's Facebook page for two of our bartenders' "fabulous" cocktail recipes.

In case you would also like to bring a tropical taste and sip of Nevis into your home, we're posting the cocktail recipes here.

Our long-time bartenders Dan and Kaddy have shared their secrets and we're making this cocktail recipe post a double with details on how to make Nisbet Plantation's "Plantation Slide" and "Nevisian Sunset" cocktails. Cheers!

Nisbet Plantation's Plantation Slide Cocktail Recipe

2 oz Vodka
1 oz Bailey’s Irish Cream
1 oz Kahlua
1 oz Coconut cream
1 scoop Chocolate ice cream
Pineapple slice and cherry for garnish

Blend liquid ingredients with two scoops of crushed ice until smooth. Pour into a goblet or highball glass. Put pineapple slice and cherry side by side on the rim for garnish. Grate fresh nutmeg on top. Add a cocktail umbrella if you’re feeling festive.

Nisbet Plantation's Nevisian Sunset Cocktail Recipe
2 oz Absolut vodka
2 oz Midori melon liqueur
2 oz Pineapple juice
Cherry for garnish

Put ice cubes in a tall glass. Add vodka and melon liqueur, then top with pineapple juice. Garnish with a cherry.

New Saturday Night Surf & Turf at Coconuts

You asked and we listened. Nisbet Plantation is adding a second casual dinner night at our poolside Coconuts restaurant overlooking the beach.

The new Surf & Turf dinner will be served on Saturday evenings from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

This special three-course plated dinner menu, created by Executive Chef Tony, will feature lighter fare such as Caribbean-inspired appetizers, Caribbean Spiny Lobster (when in season) and Gourmet Beef Burger entrees, and of course delectable desserts prepared by Pastry Chef Danilo. Menu options may change week to week, but a sample menu is available here.

Accompanying the meal will be music from a local steel pan player.

Since the Surf & Turf dinner launched earlier this summer, feedback has been positive. With many of our guests arriving on Saturday, they appreciate a more casual dinner after a day of traveling.

April Employee of the Month

Congratulations to Melisa Lawrence who is our April 2013 Employee of the Month!

This is Melisa's fourth recognition as Employee of the Month! You may recognize her from Coconuts or Sea Breeze restaurants, where she has been a server for 13 years and always provides outstanding service to our guests.

She was nominated for always being on time, coming into work on her days off to assist, working well with her co-workers and always getting her work done. Her supervisor, Angela Maynard (pictured on left), presented her with the award.

Melisa recently bought her first house, which she shares with her eight-year-old son. When not at Nisbet Plantation, she's relaxing and decorating her new home.
