Hi, all. It’s been a long time since my last post. I am not sure how much longer this blog will stay up. I don’t have the time or energy to update it anymore. I am still reading, though at a much slower pace than in the past. I still want to review books but I think my main platform may just have to be Goodreads. I have the worst Netgalley review rate and I really want to try and get it higher so that I can get approved for review books again, lol.

I just got back from Comic Con which was super fun, though I am exhausted. Picture I am using for this post is of a couple of Baby Three dolls. The blue one is mine and the other is from another con goer. I did pick up a few books at SDCC including the upcoming Marissa Meyer book The House of Saphir. I am pretty excited about it as I haven’t read a Marissa Meyer fantasy book in awhile. I still have Renegades that I should finish.

I didn’t pick up any comics at Comic Con this year only because I have a lot at home that I haven’t caught up on yet. I’d like to check out the show Revival (based on a comic) and also read some of the comics. I am pretty sure I have the first trade somewhere in my collection. I read it a long time ago and have since forgotten everything so I need to re-read it and if I like it, hopefully I’ll read more.

A couple of things I am really excited to see later this year are the new Alien: Earth tv series and the Predator: Badlands film. I was lucky enough to get into both panels this year at Comic Con where they showed the whole first episode of Alien: Earth. I really enjoyed it and am excited to see the rest of the series. The Predator panel was super cool as well and I really can’t wait to catch it in theaters. Elle Fanning was on the panel and she is so charming and delightful and I am intrigued by the character she plays in Predator. You can watch the trailers for both below.

I am also currently reading The Institute by Stephen King. I know there’s a tv show out right now but I am not watching the trailer or anything until I finish the book. I want to stay spoiler free.

That’s the update for now. Let me know what you’ve been reaching and watching lately. Until next time!

Hi, everyone! I know it’s been an age since I was last on here but I wanted to pop on before the holidays just to say hi. It was a busy summer and fall (how it is almost December!) and I just haven’t felt much motivation to blog. I know blogging isn’t really even much of a thing anymore but I still can’t give it up just quite yet.

I was able to take a couple of fun trips this year to the Pacific Northwest (Seattle and Portland) which is where I got this cute leaf heart picture. Things have still been kind of rough since my friend passed last year. This was right about the time that he went into the hospital. It’s hard but time goes on and I’ve been trying to live life as he would have wanted. He definitely wouldn’t have wanted me to be sad.

I have been reading slowly, but steadily. I find that it’s harder for me to read for long periods of time as I’ll get distracted or want to check my phone. I am not sure what I think I am missing on it while I am reading but it’s a compulsion I think many people have. Trying to break myself of it. I am also right in the midst of holiday shopping. Black Friday sales are going strong. Which reminds me that I wanted to check out Barnes and Noble today to see what signed editions they have. We started a book club at work just last week so that’ll be fun. I found some people there who love reading as much as I do and we are planning our first meeting to be at the all romance bookstore, The Ripped Bodice.

I went and saw the Wicked movie a couple of days ago and loved it. I was trying to keep my expectations low just in case, but I really enjoyed it. The costumes were especially amazing and I’d love to see it again so I can get a closer look at them. Next up on my movie watch list is Moana 2.

Sorry this has been such a short check in but I hope you’re all well and thriving. I’ll try to come back with more soon (no promises). Let me know what your favorite book has been so far this year. I’d love to add more books to my Christmas wishlist. Happy holidays!

Hello! Wow, I made a draft of this post a few months ago and never published it. So even though it’s a little late, I am going to post it now. If you’ve seen/listened to any of these, let me know. There are about a million shows and movies I need to catch up on but these are a few that I have really been loving lately.

TV

I really liked “The Gentlemen” film and was excited to see that they were coming out with a series, though I wasn’t sure what to expect from it. The series expands on the world set up in the film but takes it to a whole new level. We get a new cast of complicated characters, including an utterly charming Theo James. Each episode was a surprise in the most delightful way. I loved it and hope that they make a season 2.

Movies

I am bummed that “The Fall Guy” seems to have come and gone so quickly. I thought it was funny and sweet, all amidst amazing action sequences. It’s a love letter to Hollywood and stunt work. Blunt and Gosling have fantastic chemistry and I had a blast watching them together. Sadly, it didn’t do very well and went to home video pretty quickly. That means that you can buy/rent it now though, so I’d recommend checking it out.

Podcasts

I’ve been on a break from true crime podcasts for the last couple of years. Like many, I was consuming them at a high rate before the pandemic and during it. However, I found myself less inclined towards those themes in the last couple of years and have been really into interview/rewatch typo podcasts lately. They’re fun to listen to and are great for commuting (sadly yes we are back in the office almost full time). My favorite type of interview podcasts are usually ones where a celebrity is interviewing other people in entertainment (e.g. actors, writers, directors, etc.). My all-time fave is “The Office Ladies” featuring Angela Kinsey and Jenna Fischer from “The Office.” They go deep into each episode with really interesting insights and also fun interviews from time to time.

I have also been enjoying “Inside of You” which is hosted by “Smallville” actor Michael Rosenbaum. He interviews actors, directors, and other entertainment folk. I like that he does interviews with newer, younger actors but he also features a lot of people from the 80’s and 90’s.

One of my favorite shows ever is “Psych” and there’s a re-watch podcast with 2 of the stars called “The Psychologists Are In.” The podcast itself is bit chaotic for me and not as well organized as “The Office Ladies.” However, I love the show so much and will pop in to listen, especially when they have guests on.

Those are some of the things I’ve been into lately. Is there anything you’re loving that I need to put on my list? Let me know!

An intimate portrait of coming of age in a dangerous time and an epic tale of a nation divided.

Women can be heroes. When twenty-year-old nursing student Frances “Frankie” McGrath hears these words, it is a revelation. Raised in the sun-drenched, idyllic world of Southern California and sheltered by her conservative parents, she has always prided herself on doing the right thing. But in 1965, the world is changing, and she suddenly dares to imagine a different future for herself.

When her brother ships out to serve in Vietnam, she joins the Army Nurse Corps and follows his path.
As green and inexperienced as the men sent to Vietnam to fight, Frankie is over- whelmed by the chaos and destruction of war. Each day is a gamble of life and death, hope and betrayal; friendships run deep and can be shattered in an instant. In war, she meets—and becomes one of—the lucky, the brave, the broken, and the lost.

But war is just the beginning for Frankie and her veteran friends. The real battle lies in coming home to a changed and divided America, to angry protesters, and to a country that wants to forget Vietnam.

The Women is the story of one woman gone to war, but it shines a light on all women who put themselves in harm’s way and whose sacrifice and commitment to their country has too often been forgotten. A novel about deep friendships and bold patriotism, The Women is a richly drawn story with a memorable heroine whose idealism and courage under fire will come to define an era.

The Women is the story of the forgotten nurses and women who served on the Vietnam War. I don’t know much about the Vietnam War (even though I am the child of Vietnam immigrants) so I was intrigued to read a story about the Americans who went to war, especially the women. Part 1 of the book focuses on Frankie’s time “in-country” and the relationships she develops there as well as the beauty and horror of what she experiences during her time in Vietnam. Part 2 is about Frankie’s return home and the aftermath of her undiagnosed PTSD.

The guest part of the book really pulled me in and I read through it pretty quickly. The second part was slower and focused on Frankie trying to assimilate back into “normal” life. It was hard to read some of these parts because I really felt frustration and anger on her behalf since so many people were dismissing her service or telling her to just forget about it and love on. Of course, since then, we’ve learned so much more about PTSD and I would hope that someone with her experiences would be treated differently today.

One of my favorite things about the book were the female friendships. They all had their strengths and weaknesses and all dealt with their trauma differently but they were always there for each other.

I wish my dad was still around so I could ask him more about his time in the war. Like many of his generation, he didn’t speak much of that time.

The Women is a poignant and thought provoking story that showcases a forgotten sect of the Vietnam war. It also highlights the issues that many veterans likely face after coming home from war. It brings empathy and awareness while also being an entertaining story. This is my first Kristin Hannah book and it makes me want to check out more of her writing.

Yes, I am still here. It’s been ages since I last posted or logged into the blog. Thanks to my friend Kimberly at The Windy Pages for letting me know that it was down last week. Not sure how long that was going on but, after a couple of chats with my web host, they were able to fix the issue.

So I just wanted to pop in to say hi and hopefully I’ll be posting something more in depth soon. Last year was a bit of whirlwind. Near the end of the year I lost one of my best friends very unexpectedly. Their illness was very sudden and then they passed away. It was very stressful to say the least and my motivation to read or do much of anything else was affected.

When my site was down, I thought to myself, maybe it’s time to pack up the blog. Blogs (especially bookish blogs) have been out of style for years now but I have kept it up (pretty poorly) mainly for me and a few of my friends. When I thought that maybe my site wasn’t coming back, part of me felt a little relief but also sadness. After thinking about it for a little while, I decided that I don’t want it to end just yet and so pursued a solution to get the site back up. I can’t promise that I’ll be posting a lot but, for now, I want to keep the blog going in some capacity.

I am doing a little unofficial read-a-long with Kimberly from The Windy Pages. She wants to focus on reading physical books for awhile and I told her I would join her. Her goal is 5 physical books a month. I read a lot slower than her so I think my goal will be 3 physical books a month. We will see how it goes but if anyone wants to join us, please do.

That’s my small update for today. I’ll try to be back soon with review and more!

I can’t believe that it’s already been almost 2 months since Comic-Con. Every year it goes by in slo-mo, until suddenly, it’s over. This year, like last, I was pretty much at the con for the entire time except for Sunday. I had a great time even though it ends up being quite exhausting. I didn’t get outside to see any of the outdoor exhibits or activations this year, unfortunately. I was just too tired every night to do anything besides go back to my hotel and collapse. I’ll try to keep this to the highlights since this post will be way too long if I go into everything I did this year.

Wednesday/Thursday

I only spent a little bit of time on the floor on Wednesday night. Preview night is usually a great time to try and grab any exclusive items you want before the madness begins on Thursday. However, this year, the floor seemed especially crowded. I tried to hop over to Loungefly to grab a bag I really wanted but the line was already capped. Luckily I was able to grab it online the next day, but I was a little bummed not to be able to get it in person.

The next day was Thursday, my first full day of the con. A lot of people have asked me if the event seemed less crowded due to the strikes and the fact that some of the panels and exhibitors pulled out. Truthfully, it didn’t feel all that different to me. I don’t usually go to the big studio panels so I didn’t really miss them. I was bummed about some of the TV panels that got canceled (like Gen V) and I missed the Archer panel completely because they changed it from a Q&A to just a screening and changed the time (which I didn’t notice until it was too late). The exhibit floor also seemed more crowded than usual throughout the weekend, which might have been a result of less people camping out for Hall H and deciding to shop the floor instead.

My first panel of the day was the Welcome to Fantasy Land panel that included Darcie Little Badger (A Snake Falls to Earth, Elatsoe), Terry J. Benton-Walker (Blood Debts, Blood Justice), Rachel Griffin (Bring Me Your Midnight, Wild is the Witch), Adalyn Grace (Foxglove, Belladonna), and Maggie Tokuda-Hall (Squad, The Siren, the Song, and the Spy). The authors discussed how they approached world building and shared other insights. I was only familiar with a couple of authors on this panels it was fun to hear from them and some new to me authors.

Next up was a panel focusing on the ComiXology original comic, Barnstormers. The panel featured writer Scott Snyder and artist Tula Lotay. I’ve been a huge fan of both for awhile now and was excited to see them on a panel together. I loved hearing them discuss the process of creating Barnstormers. Snyder says that he’ll often create projects around the artist that he wants to work with and said that this one was specifically meant for Lotay. The series went on to Best Digital Comic at the Eisners that weekend.

Later in the afternoon I went to the A Different Type of Romance panel featuring Holly Black (Elfhame, Curse Workers), Becky Cloonan (Gotham Academy), Linda Šejić, Stjepan Šejić (Blood Stain, Swing), and Rachel Smythe (Lore Olympus). This was another really great panel discussing the ways in which each of these authors and artists craft what some might deem unconventional romances. This reminded me that I really need to read Lore. I tried to catch Smythe at a signing but I wasn’t able to.

Friday/Saturday

The day started off with more shopping on the exhibit floor but then I popped over to Ballroom 20 for the panel The Continental: From the World of John Wick. Luckily, since I don’t think any actors or writers were originally scheduled to appear, this panel was not canceled or revised.

The panel featured Albert Hughes, director of “Night One” (101) and “Night Three” (103); Marshall Persinger (producer), Larnell Stovall (action director), Drew Boughton (production designer), and Ron Rosen (editor).

I love the John Wick franchise so it was super cool to hear about the new limited series. They showed quite a bit of footage (which looked awesome) and it was very interesting hearing from various members of the production team about designing the action sequences and set pieces. I don’t have Peacock currently but I may have to sign up for the free trial when this drops.

Later in the day, I got to go to the panel with tokidoki’s Simone Legno and Pooneh Mohajer. I’ve been a longtime fan of tokidoki, from their very first collab with Le Sportsac. Their booth is always super popular at SDCC but this is the first year that they’ve had their own panel. Simone spoke about the brand’s beginnings and where he gets his inspiration. They were also promoting a new book featuring the artwork of Simone that looks great. It was so cool to learn that Pooneh was one of the original founders of the beauty brand Hard Candy (with her sister). I loved Hard Candy as a teen. That sky blue polish was everything! I hope that they get to do a panel again next year – also in a bigger room because it was packed!

I also popped in to the Mysteries, Magic, and Mayhem panel on Saturday.
There is always so much to see an do a Comic-Con. Even with the strikes going on, I felt like there was a ton of great programming and really awesome booths. I got to meet some cool authors and grabbed some fun books as well. Overall, super fun con, and I can’t wait to go again next year.

When a carefully worded listing appears for a governess to assist with a “delicate situation”—a child born during the Great War—Jane is certain the child is fey-cursed, and that she can help.

Teaching the unruly Dorie to suppress her curse is hard enough; she certainly didn’t expect to fall for the girl’s father, the enigmatic artist Edward Rochart. But her blossoming crush is stifled by her own scars, and by his parade of women. Ugly women, who enter his closed studio…and come out as beautiful as the fey.

Jane knows Rochart cannot love her, just as she knows that she must wear iron for the rest of her life. But what if neither of these things is true? Step by step Jane unlocks the secrets of her new life—and discovers just how far she will go to become whole again.

Truth be told, I put Ironskin on my to-read list years ago and then promptly forgot about it. It came back onto my radar again recently and I finally took the time to read it, and I am really glad that I did.

Ironskin is set in historical England, in a world where fairies and dwarves exist and in which The Great War between humans and the fae ended just five years previous. While the fae have retreated to the edges of the world, their mark is still seen and felt. Human technology is trying to catch up from their long dependence on fae magic while others, like Jane Eliot, are left with more permanent scars. Those injured by fairy bombs must contain the curses the magical injuries cause with iron or those curses will leak onto those around them. Jane, injured in the battle that killed her brother, is cursed with rage. She must wear an iron mask on half of her face to contain the anger that seeks to consume her. Not wanting to be a burden on her betrothed sister, Jane takes a position as a governess to Dorie, a special little girl who must learn to hide her fae tendencies. Jane feels an indelible pull to her father, the secretive Mr. Rochart, even though she knows that nothing can ever come of it. However, her time with the Rocharts starts to unlock secrets to Jane’s own life that just might save them all.

I had totally forgotten that this was supposed to be a loose retelling of Jane Eyre. Once I started reading though it became quite obvious what with a heroine named Jane Eyre working as a governess for the enigmatic Mr. Rochart. However, I think that is where the similarities end. Ironskin has many things that set it apart from the original and it stands alone as a unique story even without the Jane Eyre connection.

I was surprised by how quickly I got sucked into this dark new world. The fae are an ever present threat among the people of Britain. Connolly creates a dark and gothic new reality for the characters of this story. I really liked Jane, with her perseverance, grace, and good heart. I really felt for her even though at times I was frustrated with her for always putting others before herself, often to her own detriment.

While I really enjoyed the tension between Jane and Mr. Rochart, their relationship felt one sided for much of the story. While he clearly has an interest in Jane, his moods and motives are so unclear for most of the book that you can’t really blame Jane for thinking that he doesn’t care about her at all. I know that this is all a part of the Rochester persona but I wish that the author would have given Jane a little more to sustain herself with.

Connolly does a really amazing job building a rich new world full of dark and deadly secrets. I felt a lot of Jane’s dread and fear while trying to unravel the mysteries of the Rochart estate and its inhabitants. I definitely had an unsettled feeling while reading much of the book, just waiting for what might be revealed next. The book really captures the gothic feel of Jane Eyre but with its own unique twist.

Overall, I enjoyed the introduction into this exciting and dangerous new world. The author left a lot of room for the story to continue and I look forward to reading the other books in the series.

*I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. This in no way affected my review or opinion of the book.

Florence Day is the ghostwriter for one of the most prolific romance authors in the industry, and she has a problem—after a terrible breakup, she no longer believes in love. It’s as good as dead.

When her new editor, a too-handsome mountain of a man, won’t give her an extension on her book deadline, Florence prepares to kiss her career goodbye. But then she gets a phone call she never wanted to receive, and she must return home for the first time in a decade to help her family bury her beloved father.

For ten years, she’s run from the town that never understood her, and even though she misses the sound of a warm Southern night and her eccentric, loving family and their funeral parlor, she can’t bring herself to stay.
Until she finds a ghost standing at the funeral parlor’s front door, just as broad and infuriatingly handsome as ever, and he’s just as confused about why he’s there as she is.

Romance is most certainly dead… but so is her new editor, and his unfinished business will have her second-guessing everything she’s ever known about love stories.

Florence Day is the ghostwriter for the hottest romance writer in town. The only problem is, after a bad breakup, Florence no longer believes in love. When her hot new editor refuses to extend her deadline, Florence must figure out a way to believe in love again in order to save her career. However, she is suddenly called back to her hometown and is confronted with the past that she so desperately tried leave behind. Will she be able to put her ghosts to rest or will they be the key to her own happily ever after?

I had pretty high expectations for The Dead Romantics. I’d been seeing it everywhere on social media and friends I trusted really loved it. The premise of the novel is a unique one. Florence is a ghostwriter who can actually see ghosts. She has gone through most of her life trying to run away from her otherworldly abilities in favor of a more mundane life. Unfortunately, she can’t ignore the ghost of her extremely attractive editor, Benji, who shows up in her hometown when she is called back there after a family tragedy.

I enjoyed the small town aspects of the novel with its quirky characters and local landmarks and traditions. Having lost a parent, I could relate to Florence’s feelings of grief. I liked Florence though it felt like she was lacking some common sense sometimes. Benji is a bit of a lost soul (literally), his ghost-like state making him take a hard look at himself. Unfortunately, the romance between Ben and Florence was the weakest part of the book for me. Romance is usually my favorite part of a book but I did not feel much chemistry between the two and their interactions sometimes felt flat because of it.

Overall, The Dead Romantics was a cute read but I am glad that I borrowed it from the library. I know a lot of people who loved this book though so it might just not have been for me. I would still give it a chance if you’re interested in a small town romance with a paranormal twist.

Whoa, it’s been 9 months since my last post, and that was kind of just a random check in post. Truthfully, I have no idea if anyone even reads this blog anymore (not that I ever had a huge following). It’s always been a bit of a fun exercise for me doing it and I like being able to share my thoughts on books, movies, and other things going on in my life. However, it takes a lot of work to keep up a blog and other forms of media (e.g. TikTok, YouTube, Instagram) have all taken over and blogs are more and more scarce. I totally get it, too. I spend way too much time scrolling through IG and TikTok these days. However, there’s still something I really love about a medium that is less ephemeral than most content these days. I like being able to reference a website when looking up a review instead of trying to find a video and then having to watch that video in order to find the information I need.

Truthfully I am not sure what the future of this blog will be in the coming year. It may be time to hang up my blogging boots but I haven’t really decided yet.

Looking back on 2022, I failed pretty miserably at my reading goals. I went through several book slumps where nothing was exciting to me. I am not sure if it was my book choices that led to these feelings or just my general outlook. It was probably a combination of both. I am trying not to beat myself up about it but I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed in myself.

One of the things that helped when I was in a reading rut were audiobooks, specifically celebrity memoirs. I listened to 3 notables celebrity narrated memoirs last year.

I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jennette McCurdy was an honest, funny, and at times heartbreaking memoir by former child actor Jennette McCurdy. I too old to be interested in iCarly when it came out, but picked this one up due to all of the buzz it was getting. I knew nothing about McCurdy’s life but was captivated my her story and I would highly recommend this book.

I picked up My Life of Crime, Redemption, and Hollywood by Danny Trejo because I am just a fan of his. I’ve loved him in movies and have visited his donut shop, Trejo’s Donuts. His story has always interested me and it was cool to hear about his life in his own words. I also listened to actor Simu Liu’s book We Were Dreamers, which I also really enjoyed. While his upbringing was very different than mine, there was a lot of overlap in our experiences.

It’s really crazy to think that it’s already 2023. I have no idea where 2022 went. I feel like 2022 was the year that people started coming out of the pandemic but I am not sure if I ever really did. I felt more isolated than I did when we were in actual lockdown. I was pushed to the brink of mental and physical burnout. There were small moments of happiness here and here but not enough.

Moving forward in 2023 I hope to find more balance and to make myself a priority. I’d like to be more present and find more joy in every day life. Last year kind of sucked and I am hoping that a more positive outlook will translate into a happier year. I want to do things that I like and hang out with my friends more. I want to scroll less and do things that engage my mind and senses, whether that be reading, crafting, watching a new show, or exploring a new place.

No promises on when I will be back here but sending anyone reading this hugs and happy wishes for 2023.

Hi, everyone! Sorry it’s been such a long time since my last post. As usual, I have no excuse except that life has been busy and there just hasn’t been much time for anything else. I had a bit of time today though and thought I would pop in with a quick post that will be super duper random. So if you’re into that, hang on to your butts!

Unfortunately my reading habits for the last couple of months have been pretty terrible. I just haven’t been motivated to read much and the things I have been reading just haven’t been holding my attention. I’ve left a few books languishing as I try to find something that will get me out of this reading slump.

The last book I really finished was The Man Who Died Twice by Richard Osman. It is the second book in the Thursday Murder Club series and it was delightful. If you haven’t read this series yet, I would recommend it. It’s about a group of friends who live in a retirement community in England who spend their days trying to solve old cold cases. The series is clever and funny and full of heart. I really hope that i can retire one day and live in a community like this with a Jigsaw Room and solve crimes in my free time. I highly recommend this series.

Other things I’ve been loving lately:

Reacher on Prime – I’ve watched the series multiple times now and I enjoy it each time. It’s weirdly become comfort watching for me.

The Office Ladies – I’ve been a fan of this podcast from the beginning but it never disappoints. If you are a fan of The Office and want to know all the tiny details and fun back stage stories from the series (and some great interviews as well), check it out.

The Psychologists Are In – This podcast is hosted by Maggie Lawson and Tim Omundson from the TV series Psych. I am a huge Psych fan so this podcast is definitely for me. It’s a bit unorganized and chaotic but still a lot of fun. I’d probably only recommend to hardcore Psych fans though.

Dua Lipa – I was lucky enough to see Dua Lipa perform recently and she was fantastic. She sounds great a nd the production of her show was fantastic. So I’ve been listening to her a lot lately.

I think that’s all that has been keeping me occupied lately. I haven’t been knitting much though I have been puzzling. Also, the new season of Bridgerton comes out today! Not sure if I am going to wait a bit before starting it or will dive in right away.

If you have any book or movie recs, drop them in the comments below. Hopefully my reading will be picking up soon. It sucks to feel like I am not finishing any books but I also don’t want to force myself to read if I am not feeling it. Hopefully I’ll be back with some book reviews soon (I am so behind!).
