Understanding life

In November 1996 I was made redundant from a senior role within the Investment banking industry and I felt lost. I looked for a new role in every newspaper paper and with recruitment agencies, nothing even sparked my interest. No surprise there was no new job.

In February 1997 I got a message that changed my life. In the first minute of my initial visit to a therapist she had a message for me, but she felt dubious about giving me the message. I insisted.

The message was that the man in front of her (me) felt his life was over and the affect of this would be. That within two years I would become seriously ill and dead within five years. Even the love of for my wife and two young sons would not be enough to keep me here.

I was shocked, but her message resonated with me as no other ever had. After twenty frustrating years in business life I did feel my life was over. I felt I had been there and done it many times over.

The information had come to her as a message. The follow up message was that if I changed my life and turned towards a role of helping people I would have a long and happy life ahead of me.

I felt I had hope and my life changed that day in that room in South London.

I decided to turn my back on my previous professional life and seek a new path. Fear and excitement came in equal measure, as I once again became a student. This time I was an eager and in time a humble student.

For the past six years my life has been a rollacoaster of emotion, fear, joy, happiness and loneliness. I knew the general direction I had to travel with no idea as to the specifics.

I traveled to places I could not have imagined myself going. I first became attuned to Reiki healing and found my life changing. I began to link with wonderful enthusiastic people. I continued my studies in the area of healing. I also decided to develop my conscious skills. I studied NLP, Timeline, Covey techniques and many more.

I enthusiastically traveled both the healing and practitioner routes. After three years I discovered, they were the same route. It was all about helping myself, as I traveled through my life and also helping others in whichever way was required. Whether through mixing NLP, meditation and Reiki, whatever tools were needed

People ask me what has changed in my life. All I can say is that I have experienced greater feeling of peace, joy and happiness than ever before in my life.

If I get down it is only for short periods before I bounce back. In the past depressions stayed with me for days or even weeks. In fact as I look back with hindsight upon my earlier life I believe I was depressed for most of it.

I have stopped blaming anyone else for things that happen in my life and take responsibility for every aspect of my life. I sometimes knee-jerk into blame, but I soon see it differently

As I felt many of the fears and worries leave my life, I was better able to empathize with others.

My role was only ever to heal myself and help others, if I can, do the same.

It is a journey with no destination. We may experience some lows but our highs will be immense.

International Executive Coaching demystified

Myth 1: There are no clear definitions of what coaching is

In the early days coaching was not clearly defined and coaches seemed a little like magicians helping to effect changes in executives without really explaining the process.

Coaching can be clearly defined as the art and science of facilitating the development, learning and performance of an executive by expanding his/her options for behaving.

Myth 2: Coaching is a fad that will go away

In its simplest form coaching is helping another person to develop and grow. We have been coaching one another since the earliest people taught each other to hunt, build shelters and to plant seeds. The prehistoric hunters who taught youngsters how to throw a spear were coaching, as were the master carpenters during the Renaissance who took on apprentices and taught them the craft. In more modern times football trainers coach their teams and executives coach younger executives.

Different techniques or terms may be used to describe the activity and process of coaching but coaching is an activity that is here to stay.

Myth 3: If you coach people successfully they may leave the organisation

If coaching is all about uncovering latent potential and encouraging individuals to realise more of their potential and goals then surely they might leave? Well, yes, it is true that the excitement and buzz people get from releasing untapped potential might catalyse a move. More often than not, however, the impact of revitalising the consultant has a very positive effect for his or her sponsoring organisation and its bottom line. Greater loyalty to the company is likely to be the result and greater productivity.

Myth 4: Coaching is time-consuming

In a busy world of heavy travel schedules and deadlines to be met, many executives may be loath to give time to ‘just’ sitting and talking. There is a fear that it is going to eat into precious personal time. Although the process may take anything from a few months to two years depending on what the individual wishes to achieve, the truth is that the coaching process increases personal responsibility, personal efficiency and time management so that time invested is returned many times over.

Myth 5: Coaching is a kind of psychotherapy

Psychotherapy tends to focus on considering the impact of an individual’s psychological and emotional history on his or her current situation whereas coaching focuses on the now and how to move forward. It is action and future oriented rather than looking at what may have gone wrong in the dim and distant past.

Myth 6: Coaching is only for those whose performance is not up to scratch

Coaching is not about ‘fixing’ poor performance. The reasons why people come to coaching are as varied as the consultants who benefit from the service themselves

Myth 7: Coaching doesn’t add to the bottom line

Coaching is a process, which helps executives become more flexible and adaptable. Greater flexibility and adaptability can lead to increased individual productivity with a definite impact on the bottom line. Recent studies in the USA (Manchester Inc) have demonstrated a return on coaching investment of anything between 5:1 – 22:1. In addition to the tangible business results, coaching also brings many intangible benefits such as better relationships with direct reports, improved team work, lower stress levels, reduced levels of conflict, increased job satisfaction, greater organisational commitment and better relationships with clients.
