Kenneth Yeo shared with us the ambitious plan to integrate Nature & Toastmasters, and Ah Cheng's demonstration on using a food blender that is different from others.

Our panel evaluators, John Sih and Kandimathi, bring their blend of humor & insight and provided valuable feedback to our speakers. John was sharp with his analysis and recommendations based on speech objectives and content, and Kandi was creative with her analysis and suggestions on the usage of the language used by the speakers.

Our 2nd part of the meeting sees a mind-blowing sharing by Asia's first Grandmaster of Memory, Nisshant Kasibhatla. He had entertained, enlightened and definitely elevated us to a paradigm shift on how he, and the rest of us, can achieve great memory. Yes, I can still remember the 16 items, and I am sure most if not all our members and friends present can remember too.
Thank you, Nisshant.

Please join us in our next meeting, 14 Nov 2011, held on the 2nd Monday of the month. Members who like to take up speaking slots or roles, do let me know so that I may allocate the slots for you.

Here are my findings:

The following items were noted:

1. Family-focused - In Australia, life revolves around the family, even in university, church and contests.

2. The topics at the contests (in speaking order):

a. Who loves your baby?

b. What's happening to me ?

c. Australian husband best or worst?

d. Catching Santa

e. The things you do for your children

f. Nobody Cares

g. Healthy Dirty Mind

h. America Holiday

i. Melons

j. Vindictive Cat

The winning sequence came from third to first in the brackets (f,i,d)

Wish you all the best for the coming contest.

Regards,

To pave the way for exciting new enhancements, sections of the Toastmasters Web site will undergo periodic closures beginning January 26, 2011. Please note the important dates listed below so that you can plan ahead.

As a result, no New Member Kits will be processed until the section is reopened, although select new member materials are available on the Web site here.

The Online Store

An enhanced interface will allow members to order engraving on products more simply and easily. Please note that Express Handling will not be available for online store purchases until February 21.

Club officers will be able to add dual and reinstated memberships online.

Speech Contest Kits will be available for purchase to download electronically in the very near future.

Districts can place orders online.

Thank you in advance for your patience. Special thanks for the numerous Toastmasters members and leaders who volunteered their time to test the site over the past few weeks, so you can be sure that your experience with the changes to the Web site will be exceptional.

Please contact World Headquarters Member Services if you have any questions about how to plan for the closures.

Sincerely,

Please prepare yourself by attempting the following topics:

1.
A line is a line. Do you agree?

2.
Life is like a thousand colours. Share with your favourite colour and why?

3.
In every cloud, there's a sliver lining. (One of my popular table topics to-date)

4.
To be or not to be

5.
Why are you here?

I have found an interesting find in District 51, Division A Website.

Cheers, Gerald Ong ACG, ALB, Secretary, Star Millennium Advanced Toastmasters Club

The interpretation of the Ten Commandments in Toastmasters:

1. Help each other to be right, not wrong. How often have you seen a new member make a mistake during a meeting, followed by someone immediately saying “point of order” and correcting the person on the spot? This is an obviously embarrassing situation, especially for a first-time Toastmaster of the Day. Instead we need to take new Toastmasters aside after a meeting and give them the boost they need to keep growing.

I normally pull new members aside and say, “I realize you got off track a little and Toastmaster Jones corrected you, but here is how you can try it next time.” Education and motivation will not only help build the next generation of advanced Toastmasters, it will help them be ‘right’ in future situations.

2. Look for ways to make new ideas work, not for reasons they won’t. New members bring fresh new ideas that merit consideration. Too often we dismiss ideas and say, “We have been doing it this way for years and it has always carved us Distinguished Club status.” But wait a second; you just told this new member that his input does not count. It is unlikely this member will suggest another idea for club betterment. Obviously, not every idea is the nugget of gold you are looking for. But you can give it a try and if it doesn’t pan out, at least you showed that everyone’s voice is important and heard.

3. Speak positively about each other and about your organization at every opportunity. I love to brag about my home club and its members. After each meeting we send out a positive meeting recap and a preview of our next meeting. We take opportunities during the meeting to praise accomplishments and continue to stress where we are on our road toward Distinguished Club status. Some may see this as crazy, but it is far from that...it is contagious. If your members see the leaders of the club bragging and talking up individual and team accomplishments, it is human nature to join in. Make each goal toward DCP a celebration; make each advancement a reason to brag on the individual. Sooner, not later, you will have created a culture of Toastmasters recruiters who truly want to share the excitement with others.

4. Help each other win, and take pride in each others’ victories. Everyone in the club needs to help each other excel. Everyone has joined for personal growth, so be proud of each others’ successes. Remember, if you have already achieved you personal goal for the year, maybe you need to take a step back and help some of the other members to move forward toward their goals. In the end, no one wins, unless everyone wins.

5. Compliment often. Praise goes an incredibly long way toward building confidence in communication and leadership. From my early days in Toastmasters I learned that every compliment contributes to a more cohesive and confident team. When I have the honor of serving as Toastmaster of the Day, I try to compliment every single person who comes to the lectern through a positive and motivational introduction.

"Make each goal towards DCP a celebration; make each
advancement a reason to brag on the individual."
6. Recognize that the customer is not an interruption to your work, but reason for it. For the purpose of this discussion I consider the customer to be every guest who walks into a club meeting and every new member in need of a mentor. Don’t look at these new members as an interruption; look at them as your reason for being in Toastmasters – to help people grow. Find ways to bring the new members both into the club and into the speaking schedule so they can immediately start realizing the benefits.

When I serve as a mentor, I try to sit down and plan out the new member’s entire list of manual assignments during our first discussion. We merely review each project and jot down ideas that come to mind for each speech. Believe it or not, this builds the member’s confidence in his or her ability to complete all the speeches.

7. Realize that “being right” is irrelevant to good service; the customer’s perception is what counts. How do you welcome new members and guests? Guests are golden and should be treated as such. Make every meeting a sales pitch and full of excitement. If your meetings are boring, why would a guest want to return? The guest must leave with a perception that Toastmasters is the place he/she needs to be and realize there is a substantial benefit to joining the club.

8. Maintain a positive mental outlook. Do everything with enthusiasm and good humor; your attitude is contagious. I look at a Toastmasters meeting as a chance to celebrate the joys of improving my communication and leadership ability. Every chance I get to speak, no matter what the role, I am enthusiastic. Even when I serve as the timer, I introduce the position with zeal and explain the duties with a bit of humor. Keep your attitude positive and watch you membership grow.

9. Sacrifice for the good of the team. Sometimes you need to slow down your pace toward a goal so another member can succeed and move on. Give as many speeches as you can, but always put others to the forefront.

Additionally, make sure everyone in your club knows what the goals are for Distinguished Club status. Come up with plans for reaching your goals and publicize them. Let your members know that you may need to schedule others to speak more often for a short period of time to meet goals, but you will get everyone back in the fold quickly. Bottom line: build a culture where everyone accepts the team’s goals and are willing to play their part to make them a reality.

10. Have fun. One of my club members was gone on a two-week vacation. Upon returning he said, “I missed these meetings and I’m happy to finally be back.” Toastmasters is a springboard to better communication and leadership, but it must be built on a foundation of fun. Too many people are afraid of public speaking, but if they perceive it as fun and non-threatening, they are more likely to jump right in and get involved. Also, if the atmosphere is fun and members can joke back and forth, those public speaking errors will give members a chance to laugh with, not at the other members.

These 10 items have served me well for many years, both at work and in my local clubs. I hope you can use some of the ideas in your club. Maybe by simply looking at things a little differently, you can draw in new members or retain some that are on the fence of staying or going. Remember, everyone joined the club to become better speakers and leaders. It is your job as the leader of the club to help them realize this goal, so make it positive experience for the individual and the team.

Here are some pointers you can consider when preparing for the Evaluation Contest. This is compiled through the workshops attended and contest observations.

What is the SMA Formula? Shine, Motivate, Ace

Shine - What are the take-aways (aka ta pao) from the Speaker?
1. What's the speech purpose? Entertain, Motivate, Inspire, Persuade
2. What was the topic effectively selected?

Motivate - How can you make his next speech better?
1. Is your recommendation effective and logical?
2. Find his sweet spot and make him do it excellent the next time.

Ace - make the judges like you.
1. It's okay to use notes during your speech presentation.
2. Your approach in delivering your message to the audience is unique as compared to your competitors

Best of luck to all our club contestants in your speech preparation on the actual day

Cheers.

I will show you how to be Smart, Maximize, Achieve.

Be Smart: - Know what the judges are looking for.
Story
-Cannot be a series of one-liners
- Substainally Original
Laughter Points
-More Laughter Points, More Chances of Winning
-Frequency of Laughter Points, measured in 10sec intervals
-How long does each laughter point last? Short – 3 seconds, Long – 5 seconds

Maximize: - effective time allowance in scripting your speech
Time Management
-Keep to the time allocated of 4min 30 sec to 7 min sec. (Anything more than the allocated time would disqualify you)
-Plant sufficient laughter points so that you can adjust accordingly to audience response.
- Prepare a speech for the duration of 6 minutes to allow for audience to laugh

Achieve: - the audience would have a good laugh
-Enjoy the audience's laughter as you continue to share your speech
- Dramatise the speech to gather attention
- Control of Speech Rate & Pauses to create the humour

Best of luck to all our club contestants in your speech preparation.

Cheers.
Bruno Pereira, DTM

My fellow members, we have mentored many new members in the Toastmasters movement. Sometimes, we are too busy that we don't bother to spend time with them.

A mentor is a friend who guides new members in understanding meeting protocols and assisting them in their project speeches.

What make successful mentors? Seeing the new member climbing through greater heights in confidence, competency & competitiveness. Know their needs. If the needs are not clearly addressed, will they be able to improve further? Not only they will be handicapped, but also at the bottom end until they began to start discovering new things

Have you ever thought making a difference to their lives? They will always remain you in their speeches.

So take the lead in becoming a mentor. Don't leave them behind when they are in need.

Regards,

I've never imagine celebrating 3.8 International Woman Day with such zeal, energy and positive vibes. I'm sure all members, guests, appointment holders and definitely the participants enjoyed themselves tremendously.

We were treated with wonderful stories and personal life lessons from the various speakers. Contestant Bruno Pereira sharing with us his ordeal and memories of his father, to cherish & to love before its too late, Contestant Yip Pei Shan reminiscing her moments of her grandfather and importance to cherish and live life to each moment, Contestant S. Narayanaswamy bringing history to life, sharing the significance of the flag on top of the Supreme Court, Contestant Mark Leong slicing the choices of life & death between a samurai & a tea maker, Contestant Vera Wee pouring out her personal struggles liken to a mule trapped in a well, and Contestant Shridar Narayanaswamy encouraging us to move from ungraciousness to graciousness, unfairness to fairness.

I'm very sure that the audience had a good time, and judges had a hard time judging. Our motherly Tay Yiang Ping prepared nice refreshment for all present. A well-deserved break indeed. Thanks Yiang Ping.

The session is followed by 8 courageous impromptu speaking participants, namely Angela Oh, Bruno Pereira, Mark Leong, S. Narayanaswamy, Shridar Narayanaswamy, Theresa Sng, Vera Wee and Yip Pei Shan (alphabetical order). I believe the topic "A bad craftsman blame his tools", is definitely cut & slice in various forms by our 8 speakers.

Indeed, the meeting closed off with rousing applauses and moving appreciation.

Thank you all appointment holders, judges, participants.
