How do you get 11 people together for a family picture when, three of them serve in the military, and five members live over half of the year in a different country where they serve as missionaries? How this amazing momma was able to accomplish getting all of her children in one spot for two hours amazes me.

I immediately fell in love with this family when I first met them two years ago. They are a family who believes in serving. The three older boys serve in the military. The family has served the last seven years as missionaries and continue to serve their local community in the Dominican Republic. (You can find more information about their work here. )

When they see a need they are the first to jump in and help in anyway they can. My son had the privilege of serving with them and their work last summer. They cared for him as if he was one of their own.

I am so thankful to call them friends and know I can call any of them and they will be there in a heartbeat to help. I love their honesty, openness and know when ever we have a chance to get together conversations will be deep, raw, encouraging and full of laughter too. I am so grateful to have them in my life.

I love photographing birth.

I feel privileged to be invited to sit in on such an intimate moment, watching, observing and capturing two people as they prepare to bring a brand new tiny human into the world.

As a birth photographer I start getting excited when I go on call. My on call time is two weeks before and after the Estimated Due Date. Which means never traveling more than an hour away or committing to anything I can’t get out of quickly.

Each night I run through my check list

Clothes laid out? Check
At least half a tank of gas? Check

Cell phone charged? Check
Travel chargers charged? Check

Batteries charged? Check
SD cards ready? Check
Camera bag packed with snacks, water and camera equipment? Check. Check. Check.

I love the anticipation as each day passes and the EDD approaches. The constant checking of my cell phone, just in case I missed the loud ringer I have for my expectant mom. I even have my kids call me several times just to make sure my phone is working.

Then it happens, the call from my new mom comes and she is in active labor. I do my best to remain calm and not speed to where she will bring this tiny human into the world, but I am so excited to witness and capture forever the birth of this precious little one.

Upon arrival I watch and try and capture every little thing that makes each birth different, capture the relationships in the room, capture her strength as she works to bring her baby into the world.

When the baby arrives its as if a large glass jar of joy has broken. The smiles, the tears, the laughter.

When it is time to go, I feel like I’m riding a roller coaster of emotions. The adrenaline and endorphins push out the exhaustion from being awake for hours and on my feet.

I tell myself, I will go home and crawl into bed but I end up making a strong cup of Dominican coffee and look for at least one or two sneak peaks I can share before I crawl under the covers. I can always catch up on my sleep tomorrow.

Family Wall

When people enter our home one of the first things they say is how warm, and inviting our home is. I always thought this was strange because we lived very simply. Most of our furniture was hand me downs (and not even the nice hand me downs). What little new furniture we had was very simple and plain. When I kept hearing this over and over I started observing the differences between my home and other homes and I discovered the reason why. Family Photographs.

When I was around six years old, my mom, two sisters and I moved in with my maternal grandparents. My Grandma Rebecca loved photographs. She had a family wall of photographs in the family room where tons of 8 x10 photographs hung on the wall. There were individual photographs of her parents and her 11 bothers and sisters, and my Grandpa Johnny’s parents and his 13 brother’s and sisters. The wall held wedding photos of her parents, her siblings and my personal favorite, the wedding photo taken outside her little one room house with my grandfather. There were photos of my grandparents as a young engaged couple, her as a young mom, photos of my many uncles in uniform during war time and my Uncle Nay in his Pacific Coast League Padre uniform. There were photos of the families in large groups and small. I loved how the smaller groups gave you an insight of their individual relationships.

This family wall of pictures mesmerized me, and the many visitors who came into our home. The house was a historical site and visitors always wanted a tour. They would ask my Grandma Rebecca about who the people were and she would name each person and tell a little of their story. Some stories were funny, some sad and some inspiring. I felt like I knew these family members personally even though I had never met some of them, they were a big part of my life just the same. When my great aunts and uncles would visit and linger at the dinner table and tell stories of when they were younger I could immediately picture them in my head because of the photograph on the wall.

I knew when I grew up I wanted a wall like the one my Grandma Rebecca had in our home. I knew I wanted my future children to see pictures of their aunts, uncles, and grandparents as young individuals so they could picture them in their mind when they heard the stories around the dinner table. And now as visitors come into our home they are intrigued with the many family photographs on our wall. They ask about each individual and I find myself telling stories just like my Grandma Rebecca did so long ago. Even though she has passed I still feel a connection to her when I look at my family wall, or when I look through old photographs. I can hear her telling the stories. Thank you Grandma for sharing with me your passion so I could make it mine. I love you and miss you deeply.

Twenty One Years

Ever since I was a little girl I knew I wanted to be a mom when I grew up. Twenty-one years ago today that dream became a reality when my first-born Isaac was born.

I have enjoyed watching this not so tiny baby boy grow through the years. I admire the man God is molding him into. I love his quiet spirit, his competitive nature, his loyalty, his love for God and country.

He stands by his convictions even if it means standing alone. I am thankful that he will fiercely protect family and friends but show gentleness with children. I admire his obedience to spend summers going on mission trips.

And during the last year and a half I have been humbled by his faithfulness through the recent storms in his life. He has been strong when I have felt weak, joyful when it would have been easy to be angry and disappointed. I am so grateful to God for allowing me to be a part of your life. I pray this next year you will be one of the best and you will discover God's direction for your life.

Happy Birthday Isaac, I love you!

This year has passed so quickly. Only two weeks left of the year and so far behind in posting! I would like to say I picked up my camera more and started shooting everyday but the truth is I've picked it up even less. I've relied on my camera phone and the desire to shoot (or willing subjects to shoot) are pretty much non-existent.

This year has brought on a lot of changes, some good, some bad but all have gone through my Master's hands and one thing I must rely on is that He is a Generous King and he is faithful.

God has been so kind to place two sweet and dear friends in my life, Jessi Hunt and Jenni Dowling. It all started rather simply. While working in Children’s Ministry about 11 years ago, there was this sweet young lady named Jessi Hunt, who would always pick up her brothers after the service. There was always a smile on her face, and a “Hi, Mrs. Brown” as she came to the door. I had heard rumors of this family with seven children, who all played the violin, Irish danced and their names all began with “J”. We would chat for a little while about their upcoming adventures, playing at Busch Gardens, Music Camp, touring and the Tony Danza show. No matter what the conversation was it would always point back to God’s goodness.

As the years passed our lives would intertwine through basketball, music camps, music lessons, and 316. While on their tour in 2010, we would Facebook chat, sometimes into the wee hours of the morning. I loved and treasured every opportunity to talk to Jessi and Jenni over the years. Their love for Christ and his people poured out of them. Conversations always brought encouragement on the faithfulness of God.

Jessi and Jenni have prayed for me and encouraged me during the darkest days of spiritual depression, and constant doubt over my salvation. They have been faithful to pray for my children when there has been spiritual dryness in their lives or when they are suffering. We have prayed together that God would make himself known to our youth group and church. We have prayed for the Spirit to pour himself out onto our families, our church and our teens. They have prayed over me for healing not only physically but healing in my anger over my father leaving when I was a young girl and how that anger was affecting my home and my relationship with God.

And just recently they have been faithful friends who have upheld my children and myself in prayer during one of the most trying times of our lives. God was so kind to use them at the perfect time to send a text with a prayer, words of encouragement or scripture and I’m thankful for their willingness to just drop by. I know no matter what they are always a text a way and that they will pray and do battle for us.

I have learned so much from these two beautiful young ladies. They have shown me what the faith of a mustard seed can do. They have shown me and taught me about faith and the power of prayer. And they have encouraged me in the Word when I have been unable to read the Word on my own. My life has been richly blessed by having them in my life.

Jessi and Jenni, I want to thank you for your love, support and friendship. Thank you for taking initiative with me and my children and for not being afraid to make this older lady your friend.

To quote 1 Thessalonians 1:2 I thank God for you and continually mention you in my prayers.
