But the fall of Athens will have a domino effect – tugging away the rest of Europe.

The Greek politician has sharply criticized the recent country’s government and the newly appointed prime minister for bowing entirely the Brussels’ will and passing laws which are required solely by the European leaders.

“Greece does not feel to be rightfully represented by this parliament because they feel they were tricked in the last elections,” Kedikoglou told RT. “The socialists were saying ‘we have money, we will give you money’ and they ended up by taking the money of the people. Greeks need to feel rightfully represented by their parliament and we need a government that is supported by the Greek society. And that comes only with elections”.

Simon Kedikoglou acknowledges there is a fear for tomorrow in Athens.

“We don’t know what’s coming next,” he said. “Now everyone is realizing that it is not just a Greek problem, it is the European problem. The whole system that we have made up in the European Union is not working.”

“We had only monetary union without economic union, without political union. We need to move to a faster and bigger integration,” he added.

The MP says the government in Greece used to lie to its people about how the country’s development was progressing.

“It was the way of borrowing money and giving it away. It was done in the wrong way,” he claims. “We don’t produce as much as we did before and we don’t have the exports that we could have and we haven’t attracted the investments that we must attract. So we must change the whole structure of our economy very quickly and completely.”

“We didn’t speak the truth to the people over the past years. We know the problem is we didn’t do what had to be done quickly and radically. We tried to do the changes slowly and without shocking the society. It proved to be too slowly and too late,” he stated.

“Now we have to speak the truth that in the last 20 years, Greece has been importing more than it’s been exporting. We don’t produce. Greece doesn’t produce the wheat, the meat that Greeks need. It is the first time since World War II Greece can’t feed its own people. In a country like Greece, where everything can grow, I think it’s a crime.”

But at the same time Simos Kedikoglou argues austerity cannot save his country.

“If you raise the taxes in an economy which is in recession then the results are catastrophic. We need a policy which encourages development. If we go where we are going, I think the collapse is certain".

“And that’s going to be Greek tragedy. And not just Greek tragedy,” he predicts. “It will have a domino effect and the whole Europe will be affected. You can’t sacrifice Greece just to save eurozone. Eurozone will either be saved all together or collapsed all together.”

Bomb voyage: 600 Libyans ‘already fighting in Syria’

The Libyan government apparently wants to share its successful experience of overthrowing the Gaddafi regime with like-minded Syrians. It has sent 600 of its troops to support local militants against the Assad regime, according to media reports.

The fighters have joined the Free Syria Army, the militant group carrying out attacks on government forces in Syria, reports the Egyptian news website Al-Ray Al-Arabi citing its sources. The report says the troops entered Syria through Turkish territory.

The alleged incursion happened with the consent of the chairman of the Libyan National Transitional Council (NTC) Mustafa Abdul Jalil. The NTC allegedly welcomed volunteers to join the surge.

Last Friday British media reported a secret meeting between NTC envoys and Syrian rebels had been held in Istanbul. The Libyan governing body reportedly pledged to supply arms, money and fighters to the Syrians.

Bashar Assad’s government has repeatedly accused foreign forces of smuggling armed groups and weapons into Syria and thus fueling the ongoing violence.

In mid-October the Libyan NTC was the first government to recognize the rebel Syrian National Council as the legitimate representatives of the Syrian people.

The Libyan population is in possession of many weapons, which they received during the civil war by plundering military depots, through smuggling or as aid from NATO members and countries like Qatar, which took part in the ousting of Muammar Gaddafi. The NTC has difficulties in disarming the ex-rebels, who want to keep their firearms, either for personal protection or as means to make their living.

In November, the Libyan capital, Tripoli, saw a mass protest by the rebels, who demanded that the NTC pay their wages. Some even threatened to overthrow the new government the way they did with the previous one, unless their demands are met.

Funneling armed, underemployed and eager-to-fight youngsters to another country could be a convenient move for the NTC. The Syrian government, however, is likely to see them as mercenaries, which NATO member Turkey allowed into their country as an alternative to a full-scale military campaign, which is impossible without the sanction of the United Nations Security Council.

According to the International Meteor Organization, this year’s Leonid meteor shower peaked on Nov. 18th with a maximum rate of ~18 meteors per hour. That’s not many (especially compared to the Leonid storms of a decade ago), but sometimes just one Leonid can be enough. In Chelmsford, UK, astronomer Nick James caught this fireball lighting up the sky almost as brightly as the Moon:

Huge atmospheric rivers that wind their way through the skies have been linked to the 10 largest winter floods in the UK since the 1970s. A study of similar systems in California suggests that such floods could become more frequent and severe if greenhouse gas emissions accelerate.

An atmospheric river is a narrow corridor or filament of concentrated moisture in the atmosphere at least 2000 kilometres long and several hundred kilometres across, which move water across the mid-latitudes. They flow in the lower troposphere, where winds with speeds in excess of 12.5 metres per second can carry as much water as the Amazon river. Atmospheric rivers consist of narrow bands of enhanced water vapor transport, typically along the boundaries between large areas of divergent surface air flow, including some frontal zones in association with extratropical cyclones that form over the oceans. At any given time, four or five ARs carry nearly 90 per cent of the moisture that is moving towards the poles.

They also are the major cause of extreme precipitation events which cause severe flooding in many mid-latitude, westerly coastal regions of the world, including the West Coast of North America, western Europe, and the west coast of North Africa. A strong AR transports an amount of water vapor roughly equivalent to 7.5–15 times the average flow of liquid water at the mouth of the Mississippi River.

NOAA research (NOAA Hydrometeorological Testbed and CalWater) uses satellite, radar, aircraft and other observations, as well as major numerical weather model improvements, to better understand atmospheric rivers and their importance to both weather and climate.

Scientific research yields important data that helps NOAA National Weather Service forecasters issue warnings for potential heavy rain and flooding in areas prone to the impacts of atmospheric rivers as many as five to seven days in advance.

David Lavers of the University of Reading, UK, and colleagues combined historic river flow and weather data with computer simulations of ARs. They found a strong link between extreme floods and ARs that were flowing at the time.

In November 2009, for example, the county of Cumbria received record rainfall that caused floods. This coincided with an extra-tropical cyclone which funnelled an AR towards the UK. Together with the Cumbrian mountains, the cyclone forced the AR to rise, cooling its moist load and forming rain. Unusually, the river dumped rain for several days, triggering the floods.

Michael Dettinger of the Scripps Institution of Oceanography in La Jolla, California, studied the “Pineapple Express”, an AR that brings water from the tropics near Hawaii to California. He used seven global circulation climate models to look at the changes in AR-induced storms if greenhouse gas emissions accelerate during the 21st century.

What he found was that more evaporation due to higher temperatures could cause AR-induced storms to become more frequent in California. There is no reason to expect any different in the UK. (NewScientist)

OPERA collaboration shocked the world in September with the announcement that the ghostly subatomic particles called neutrinos had arrived at the Gran Sasso mine in Italy about 60 nanoseconds faster than light speed from the CERN particle accelerator near Geneva, Switzerland, 730 kilometres away. It was one of the most staggering results in physics.

Although the detectors in Italy can pinpoint the neutrinos’ time of arrival to within nanoseconds, it’s less clear when they left the accelerator at CERN. The neutrinos are produced by slamming protons into a bar-shaped target, sparking a cascade of subatomic particles. If the neutrinos were produced at one end of the bar rather than the other, it could obscure their time of flight.

Some theories posit that there are extra, hidden dimensions beyond the familiar four (three of space, one of time). It’s possible that the speedy neutrinos tunnel through these extra dimensions, reducing the distance they have to travel to get to the target. This would explain the measurement without requiring the speed of light to be broken.

After two additional weeks of observation scientist are now confident that neutrinos can go faster than light. Einstein’s theory of special relativity posits that nothing can travel faster than light, and many physicists believe the result could disappear in a puff of particles. So the theorists have been struggling to reconcile the September result with the laws of physics.

In period from October 21 to November 6 2011 the team ran a second set of measurements with 20 new neutrino hit experiments. The team also rechecked their statistical analysis, confirming that the error on their measurements was indeed 10 nanoseconds. Some team members had worried that the true error was larger but last results show the measurements “absolutely compatible” with the original announcement.

The lenght of fibre-optic cable that carries information from the underground lab at Gran Sasso to a data-collection centre on the surface is put on test also. The team is also trying to do the same test using another detector at the lab called RPC. That test will take another several months. (NewScientist)

Tommaso Dorigo, a physicist at CERN, noted on his blog that there are still other possible sources of error. For instance, the OPERA collaboration’s clock might not have a fine enough resolution to determine exactly when the neutrinos arrived. The measurement therefore would be only a ‘partial’ confirmation of the earlier result he stated.

Ultimately, the only thing that would convince many in the field is if another team upholds the findings in an independent experiment. Plunkett, co-spokesperson for the Main Injector Neutrino Oscillation Search (MINOS) experiment at Fermilab, says that his collaboration expects to have results checking the OPERA findings in the spring of 2012. This results can be confirmed by other experiments such as the MINOS experiment at Fermilab or the T2K experiment in Japan in orded to get scientists concensus. There are a number of experiments that are online or coming online that could be upgraded to do this measurement. Hongjianzhuo Lake in Yulin city, China’s biggest freshwater lake in desert areas, Northwest China’s Shaanxi province is rapidly shrinking. The fish output of the lake used to reach 360 tons a year. However, it is rare to see any fish in the lake now, as they are dying out due to the lake’s high salt content caused by the shrinking of the water surface.

More than 2 million Afghans are at risk of hunger and many are bracing to be stranded for months without help as the country prepares for a harsh winter. Save the Children and Oxfam agencies called for a redoubling of the aid effort to reach people in need before the onset of heavy snows cut off huge swathes of the country. Typical Afghan weather patterns mean that those living in mountainous areas- up to half of the affected population –will almost certainly soon be cut off from help as winter closes in.

Families from 14 drought-affected provinces have not been able to grow enough wheat to feed themselves over the winter due poor rains earlier this year. According to a UN assessment, in some provinces almost 100 per cent of the harvest has been destroyed, and food prices have soared, with the price of wheat in some areas doubling on average since this time last year.

Families are coping by cutting down their meals, borrowing money and even moving to Iran or Pakistan. Some 90 per cent of households in the affected area are now living in debt after borrowing money to buy food, and schools have closed as children are being put out to work. Food, clean water and extra healthcare made available in the next few weeks will be critical as families face the risk of rising rates of disease and malnutrition that will hit the poorest and most vulnerable hardest

The US Army has tested a hypersonic missile, which travels six times faster than the speed of sound. It is part of a larger plan to have the capability to strike any place on the planet within an hour.

The missile, called the Advanced Hypersonic Weapon (AHW), was launched from Hawaii on Thursday, the Pentagon reported. A rocket delivered it to suborbital altitude, after which the glider went for its target on the Marshall Islands, some 3,700 kilometers away.

It hit less than 30 minutes later, which means its speed was at least 7,400 kilometer per hour, or about Mach 6. An aircraft must be able to fly faster than Mach 5, to qualify as hypersonic.

A Mach number is used to describe the speed of an object or a fluid in comparison to the speed of sound in that medium. Mach 1 means the object travels at the same speed as sound. However the speed of sound may vary depending on such conditions as temperature and composition, so the speed expressed in Mach number is also variable. The now-retired Concorde supersonic passenger planes used to fly at a cruising speed of about Mach 2.

The test was aimed at gathering data on "aerodynamics, navigation, guidance and control, and thermal protection technologies," the Pentagon said.

The AHW is one of several projects of the Prompt Global Strike program. It is aimed at developing several weapons which can be launched from American territory and reach their destinations within an hour.

On August 11 the US Air Force tested another hypersonic glider called the HTV-2. It is faster than the AHW, with speeds reaching 27,000 kilometer per hour. But unlike the Army’s vehicle, it does not work well – the test was aborted due to a technical failure.

The Soviet Union developed ramjet engines capable of hypersonic locomotion and even tested one design, which successfully reached Mach 5.7. The work was stalled by the collapse of the USSR, and no weapon using this technology was ever produced.

UFO fleet sails over Raven Street Church in New Orleans

On Saturday, November 12, 2011, a spectacular UFO fleet was observed moving slowly across the sky above Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana late at night.

One person who witnessed the event was able to record the UFO fleet as it passed overhead. The video was posted online by a 45-year-old musician, theologian, and paranormal enthusiast named Tim on MegaCOOK28's Channel. It is unclear whether Tim is also the videographer.

Over the course of four and a half minutes, more than three dozen glowing orange orbs were seen over Raven Street Church. The area just beneath the moving UFOs was filled with noisy crowds of people on Bourbon Street. Some of those present simply went about their business while others stared up into the sky at the unidentified flying objects gliding high above them.

The UFO footage on the left side of this page shows that the objects were all heading in the same direction. They appeared to be the same size and glowed with the same internal orange light. Although the objects have not been identified, they do resemble Chinese lanterns being guided by a light breeze.

Restless underwater volcano disrupts life on Canary Island

Madrid - Steaming magma is bubbling onto the sea surface. The earth shakes, and a smell of sulphur floats in the air.

For over a month, residents of the Spanish Canary Island of El Hierro have lived with an active underwater volcano that not only poses a security threat, but also scares off tourists and endangers the inhabitants' livelihoods.

Volcanic eruptions could continue for weeks, civil protection science representative Carmen Lopez said this week.

However, the situation has been deemed safe enough for the 550 evacuated residents of the fishing village of La Restinga to return home, though the island was still being hit by earthquakes.

The earth began trembling on El Hierro on July 19, in a sign that magma was rising toward the surface of the smallest Canary Island.

Evacuation

The island of 11 000 residents has a large volcano and more than 250 craters. But its volcanic power had been dormant for centuries, with the last eruption reported in 1793.

El Hierro has now experienced more than 11 000 earthquakes since July. The vast majority were not noticed by the population, but grew in intensity.

Dozens of people were evacuated for fear of rockslides in September, and an army unit was put on standby to help in the event of a mass evacuation.

An underwater eruption occurred on October 10, following an earthquake of a magnitude greater than 4. Scientists observing seismic activity confirmed the eruption. Dead fish were seen floating on the water.

Volcanic activity has since continued intermittently, with witnesses reporting jets of gas and ash spewing several metres above sea level.

The eruptions have sent a large volume of greenish magma spilling into the sea.

An oceanographic vessel discovered a 100m-high volcano with a 120m-diameter crater located at a depth of about 200m.

Eruptions

It is thought possible that magma is also breaking through one or two other outlets. Some of the eruptions have been observed as close as 1.5km off El Hierro's southern coast.

The nearby La Restinga has been evacuated several times. There has also been concern over a possible eruption off Frontera, the island's economic capital in the north, following strong earthquakes in the area. More than 50 people were evacuated.

"The worst scenario would be an eruption on land," Canaries security chief Juan Manuel Santana told the daily El Pais.

There is even a remote possibility of eruptions resulting in new land. Possible names for a new Canary Island have already been suggested on the internet, such as Atlantis or Discovery.

For the moment, however, experts are most concerned about the presence of toxic gases, though there is practically no evidence so far of health damage to the population.

Most El Hierro residents are more worried about their livelihoods than about the simmering volcano.

Emergency

The earthquakes and eruptions have brought fishing and touristic diving to a standstill in La Restinga, some of whose residents had to resort to emergency food aid.

Life is now returning to the village while two nearby coves still remain closed to the public.

The authorities are also maintaining some of the traffic restrictions imposed earlier. Traffic will remain limited in a key tunnel linking Frontera with the island's capital Valverde. The traffic problems have sparked more protests over economic losses.

There were initial hopes that the volcano would draw more tourists to the island, which receives about 7 000 visitors annually.

But the opposite happened, with more than 1 500 cancelling their holidays and causing losses worth hundreds of thousands of euros for the local tourism industry, its representatives said.

Magma now covers some of the island's rich underwater flora and fauna at the Mar de las Calmas marine reserve, which was a favourite among tourists.

Some El Hierro residents are preparing demonstrations, accusing Prime Minister Jose Luis Rodriguez Zapatero's government of abandoning them.

"Other emergencies only last a certain time, but that is not the case now," Santana said. "What people want is a return to normality, to routine."

Remarkable Solar Activity

There haven't been any strong solar flares in days. Nevertheless, some impressive activity is underway on the sun. For one thing, an enormous wall of plasma is towering over the sun's southeastern horizon. Stephen Ramsden of Atlanta, Georgia, took this picture on Nov. 11th:

"Solar forums all over the world are buzzing with Sun-astronomers proclaiming this to be the biggest prominence that many of them had ever witnessed," he says.

Remarkably, though, this is not the biggest thing. A dark filament of magnetism is snaking more than halfway around the entire sun: SDO image. From end to end, it stretches more than a million km or about three times the distance between Earth and the Moon. If the filament becomes unstable, as solar filaments are prone to do, it could collapse and hit the stellar surface below, triggering a Hyder flare. No one can say if the eruption of such a sprawling structure would be Earth directed.

"I cant help but wonder what could possibly come next since we are still over a year away from the forecasted Solar Maximum," adds Ramsden. "There's never been a better time to own a solar telescope than now!"

Snap! Erupting Filament

For the past few days, astronomers around the world have been monitoring a dark filament of magnetism sprawled more than 1,000,000 kilometers across the face of the sun. Make that 750,000 km. On Nov. 14th the filament snapped and flung a fraction of itself into space. NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory recorded the action:

The eruption hurled a cloud of plasma into space, but not toward Earth. The only effect on our planet would be to disappoint observers hoping for a longer filament.

Meanwhile, a wall of plasma towering over the sun's SE limb is seething with activity and may be poised to erupt as well. Readers with solar telescopes are encouraged to monitor developments.

Occupy Tokyo: Mass demonstrations go unreported by Japanese media

You've heard about the Occupy Wall Street protests in New York, Los Angeles, London, Toronto, Berlin, Tel Aviv and elsewhere around the world. But did you know that huge demonstrations have been taking place in Tokyo as well? We certainly didn't until a SOTT forum member sent us the details. The general lack of awareness of the protests in Japan is probably due to the fact that there has been zero coverage of 'Occupy Tokyo' - which has grown out of the country's large (and growing) grassroots anti-nuclear movement - in Japan's mainstream media.

Several large demonstrations have taken place all over Japan in recent months, especially in Tokyo. The general mood is the same as elsewhere: ordinary people in Japan are fed up with their leaders' lies, particularly the lies told by TEPCO, the Tokyo Electric Power Company, and how the government has handled the Fukushima disaster. Or rather, how it has avoided handling it. This should all be eerily familiar to Americans of course; BP's lies and the US government's enabling role from the moment the Deepwater Horizon rig exploded in April 2010 has continued to this day, with the tragedy continuing to unfold in deathly silence. What is happening in Japan is almost a carbon copy; denial, smear campaigns, heavy-handed tactics and, of course, total media blackout. Up to one million people may have died as a result of Chernobyl, although we'll never really know the true death toll. Fukushima is many orders of magnitude worse...

People in Japan are very angry. Even though the Fukushima disaster is nowhere near ending (in fact, it is getting worse), Japanese media are simply not covering the fallout of the worst nuclear accident in history. Aftershocks from the Magnitude 9 earthquake which struck off the coast of Japan on March 11th are hardly mentioned in the Japanese media, but the fact is they are still ongoing and people are constantly stressed out by them. The economic aftershock is also beginning to take hold in a big way. The good news, says the SOTT forum member in Japan, is that people are now starting to wake up the fact that the Japanese government, TEPCO, and the media have been lying all this time and that more people are starting to take action to actually deal with the situation rather than wishfully think it will just blow away out into the Pacific Ocean.

Like citizens in other 'democratic' countries, Japanese people have had a crash course this year in learning that their own media is as controlled, if not more so, than those 'less democratic countries' everyone loves to point fingers at. To paraphrase Japanese independent journalist, Mr Uesugi, "In Japan, control of the media is worse than in China and similar to Egypt." An outrageous example of this information blackout was a recent demonstration by over 60,000 people in Tokyo which was never mentioned by the Japanese mainstream news at all. On top of protests focused on the Japanese government's handling of the Fukushima disaster, an 'Occupy Tokyo' movement is gaining momentum as well. Nobody is receiving much information about this either, unless they check out alternative websites. What follows is an overview of some of the events that have taken place in Japan, Tokyo in particular, in the past three months.

September 2nd: Yoshihiko Noda becomes the new prime minister of Japan and promises to phase out the country's reliance on nuclear power.
September 5th: Typhoon Talas leaves 29 dead and 56 missing as "the worst storm in memory" leaves thousands homeless.
September 10th: The night before the 10th anniversary of 9/11, the Shinjyuku ward of Tokyo, one of the city's major business and administrative centers, is sealed off, allegedly due to "maintenance". BS! The government was anticipating a mass demonstration which it thwarted by effectively banning anyone from showing up.
September 11th: People gather to form a human chain by holding hands and enclosing the headquarters of the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry in Tokyo. Also that day, supporters of the Japanese peace and neutrality NGO, 'Article 9 Association', begin pitching tents around the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Among the protesters were four young activists who began a 10 day hunger strike to draw attention to the Japanese government's plans to build more nuclear power stations!

September 19th: 40,000 people attended a 'Get-rid-of-nuclear-power' meeting in Meiji Park, Tokyo. "We cannot help it, so we came"

September 21st: The four activists finish their hunger strike.
September 25th: In New York, Fukushima mothers shouted: "UN has to stop nuclear power"

A delegation of Japanese women from the Fukushima prefecture protested in front of the United Nations building in New York City while Prime Minister Noda attended a UN summit on nuclear safety. As Noda and UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon shook hands outside the building in front of the press, an organic farmer from Fukushima prefecture, Ms Sachiko Sato, stood in the background and shouted into a megaphone, "You can't even protect the children of Fukushima, how dare you talk about nuclear power safety?" Sato and other volunteers later formed the 'Fukushima 100', a number which has rapidly grown into thousands, organising sit-ins at government offices in Tokyo to demand greater protection for children affected by radiation.

September 29th: 'Occupy the Ministry of Economy' - 720 people initially attended this protest, which soon became a mecca for Japan's reinvigorated anti-nuclear movement. The following brave man from Hokkaido formally launched a lawsuit against TEPCO, in which he seeks to force the conglomerate to shut down nuclear power for good.

September 30th: The Japanese government (specifically, the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) announced the detection of plutonium in Iitate in Fukushima prefecture (45km away from the Daiichi nuclear plant).
October 10th: The Japanese government released the latest figures for airplane monitoring. The news was not good to say the least. Their solution? To offer '10,000 free trips for foreigners to visit Japan in 2012'. Eh, no thank you.

October 15th: Occupy Tokyo kicks off in earnest. "We are the 99%!"
October 22nd: Further mass demonstrations take place in Tokyo.
October 29th: More protestors, this time desperate mothers from Fukushima, join demonstrations with the message that "TEPCO must apologise and make good for radiating our children!!"
October 31st: Fukushima Fallout: Scientist Marco Kaltofen Presents Data Confirming Hot Particles In Tokyo

"To summarize the paper, citizens, some doctors and scientists, some bloggers and some farmers from around the world provided samples to Mr. Kaltofen who analyzed them for Fukushima radiation. An example of what he found is a slide that contains air filters from cars in Japan and in the United States. Cars in the United States hardly have any radiation in their air filters. Cars in Tokyo had quite a lot, way too much, in fact. Cars in Fukushima Prefecture were incredibly radioactive."
In fact, levels of radiation in 'hotspots' in parts of Tokyo and Yokohama, 150km+ from Fukushima, have recently been found to exceed those of Fukushima prefecture. The 12-mile exclusion zone around the Daiichi nuclear plant is therefore totally redundant and a sham.
November 12th: "Occupy the Ministry of Economy". 40 police officers showed up at the campsite and began putting up signs saying "No entry". Police officers tried to persuade people to leave the premises, with one of them overheard saying, "I am going to keep coming to you until you pack up your tent." The protester he was giving orders to replied, "I am going to stay here until they clean up nuclear power!"
