Fashion Flash Book Review: What Do You Say When by Florence Isaacs

After more than a year of social distancing, I found myself at a loss for words at a recent outdoor event. The next day, almost like karma, I spotted this small book at a thrift store.  “What  Do I say When” provides genuinely useful strategies for talking comfortably in a wide range of situations– from parties to conventions, the book offers  easy to follow tips.

I find the first moments  of a conversion the hardest and loved the critical path  of openers including ” what brings you here” and  “tell me about your ( company, job, home, baby).  Follow-up questions  should be open ended  eg “what are you focusing on now?” The ten rules of conversation are especially helpful  which include  building a compliment library eg what a beautiful tie, what a great idea or I admire your style.

This small  but mighty book drills down into specific situations like charity events, gallery openings school reunions, and bridal showers. I love to  get dressed up for events but as the date approaches, I develop social anxiety.  What Do You Say When  has made me excited and eager to try out my new social skills.

Fashion Flash Book Review– My New Roots by Sarah Britton

I estimate that I have cooked 1800 COVID lock down meals and I am really sick of my own cooking.  Looking thru my pantry, I saw that I was using the same ingredients eg garlic, soy sauce, mustard, thyme and rosemary,  To make my meals more interesting I needed to  expand my palette. Scanning my bookshelves, I pulled out a gorgeous yet unused cookbook.  “My New Roots” by Sarah Britton offers  seasonal plant based meals.   I started off with  Spring and tried out hand  pies made with peas, scallions, and feta cheese and seasoned with caraway seeds and ghee.  These ingredients certainly  woke up my taste buds. I pushed the seasons a bit to try a refreshing melon lemonade  garnished with mint. Other recipes have new to me ingredients  that include brown rice flour, sorrel, lemongrass and hemp seeds.  I think I am going to enjoy my own cooking again.

Fashion Flash Book Review: Salt Fat Acid Heat by Samin Nosrat

I love to cook but after a year of lockdown due to COVID and preparing more than 1000 meals, I am sick and tired of my home cooking.,  When I shared my culinary crisis with my daughter Lauren  she gave me a copy of Salt Fat Acid Heat. It is a unique cookbook that leads you to become a better cook. For example, to me, acid was lemon juice and vinegar.  Author Samin explained that sour can also come from catsup, tomatoes, dried fruit and even pickle juice.  While salt brings out flavor, acid balances them.

Half of the book explains how the four elements impact flavor of a dish while the second half offers more than 100 recipes that utilize these principles.  The first recipe I tried was a vietnamese cucumber salad  that blew me away.  It layered flavors of scallions, mint, cilantro, lime juice and seasoned rice vinegar.  It took  cucumbers to a whole new level.  Other incredible recipes included the best tomato sauce to come out of my kitchen,  soy glazed salmon, buttermilk roast chicken  and peaches in red wine. While I still long  to go out for a lovely dinner with my hubs, Sat Fat Acid Heat has made the wait more bearable

She was a single mom who raised a beautiful smart daughter who is graduating college this year. She is a much sought after influencer who works with a wide  range of fashion and beauty  brands.  And what impresses me the most  is that Nina  moves through all her roles with ease. She is a wonderful role  model for our second 50 years.
