Trance may very well be the best art heist film I have ever seen. Better than The Thomas Crown Affair, and....... Well, let's face it, there may not be that many "art heist" films. However, as far as films focused on stealing high priced merchandise, this one still has to be near the top of the list. It not only succeeds as a heist film, but also fall into my personal favorite genre, "Thriller". Throughout the film, we as the audience are never quite sure who are actually telling the truth? Who stole what? Who is playing who, and ultimately, who will win? James McAvoy plays an art museum curator guy who knows the protocol when a robbery may occur. When he is knocked senseless during a robbery and loses his memory, he knows he saved the day, or did he... At this point the plot twists and turns endlessly for the duration. When the bad guys kidnap the good guy to get information that his brain can't remember is when it gets out of hand. He goes to a therapist to "unlock" suppressed memories in order to find the painting the film goes all over the place. I have watched Trance a few times and every time it is enjoyable. Vincent Cassel is brilliant as the villain, but Rosario Dawson playing the psychiatrist and the sexy love interest is the reason to watch this movie...if you are a man that is. As I said, Trance is one of the most clever, twisted films that caught me completely of guard when I first watched it. Most enjoyable and extremely smart. Enjoy it for what it is and relish in the fact that you are watching something semi original.

What's not to like? Clint Eastwood, John Goodman, and the always lovely and extremely talented Amy Adams star together in a baseball movie. It also stars Justin Timberlake, who in my opinion, could be an Oscar caliber actor if he would just give up his miserable and very unsuccessful music career and focus on doing films, but that is none of my business. This film is less about baseball and more about family ties, or lack there of. It does have the baseball element, but to me, it is sub plot. It focuses on the Father / Daughter relationship between Gus and Mickey (Eastwood and Adams). They have a checkered past, but when dear old Dad needs help due to health issues, Mickey shows up to try and help. It is the typical film about redemption from past choices and opening up dialogue to build a future together. It is beautifully acted and I still have no idea why Rotten Tomatoes and IMDB gave this film such a poor shake. I have seen it at least 5 times and it has easily become a film I can not scroll past if it is on. That should tell you just how good it is. I was surprised at how emotional a film it is. It has one of, if not the saddest scenes I have ever seen. I get teary eyed each and every time I watch said scene. Give this one a try if you have missed it because you believed those other critics. I am telling you it is great.
Let's face it. You either wanna see this or you don't. It is absolutely the epitome of a popcorn summer blockbuster. It is awe inspiring, clever, scary, and sexy. It is not better than Jurassic Park, but is better than the second and third film. I loved every minute of it. Chris Pratt is phenomenal and the dinosaurs look awesome. Lots of death with some gore. Not for young kids, but every adult will enjoy this film. I also enjoyed all the nuances put on screen that referenced the first film. It was quite awesome and it needs to be seen on the big screen.
I had less desire to see this film than most other PIXAR movies, but when it rains and nothing better to do, may as well. It absolutely blew me away. I cannot believe the range of emotions these emotions gave me. It was sad, funny, thought provoking and honest. I highly recommend this movie as kids will love it, but for parents, it will absolutely change your perspective on a couple things. Cartoons are good at the theater or at home. This is one that if you want to see, go now. If you don't care either way, then wait for redbox, but if you have been wishy washy about whether or not you should go, because you may not enjoy it, then go. You absolutely will find Joy in this film. See what I did there?
I enjoyed the original films quite a bit, but I enjoyed FURY ROAD a little bit more. Lets be honest, its a 2 hour car chase filled with mayhem. I am glad I saw this spectacle in the theater. The scope was grand and needed to be seen this way. It was wonderful and Hardy was too.

This was a film I had all intentions on watching as soon as I began reading about it long before its limited theatre release came and went and I missed it altogether. Little gems like Chef are becoming more and more rare. Jon Favreau wrote, directed, and starred in this little indie film about one man's quest for happiness and in turn, he has given me happiness. He is Chef Casper and he sucks at social media. The End. Actually the social media aspect is what gives this drama its comedy. He is a brilliant chef, or at least he was ten years earlier. The film takes place on the morning a top food blogger is coming in to review his current skills. He is ready to go, but the eternal power struggle between an artist and the boss not letting creativity take hold ends up poorly. Chef Casper thinks he has it all figured out. He is divorced with one kid he constantly lets down, and he is okay with this. This is his life. The only thing he is great at is cooking and he does not want to lose that. Where the story goes from here is utterly sad, but in a good way. Woe is me attitude is going to get the best of Casper, but luckily his ex wife and his son find a way to present him with a choice at happiness. An all star cast for which I had no knowledge of prior to viewing round out this beautiful film about family and food. I am not going to spoil some of the great actors that appear in this film. It is a pleasant surprise and fun to watch. This is by far Favreau's best film. Not only the script, but his passion on the screen is untouchable. He is insanely good, and I hope anyone who gets a chance to watch this (currently streaming on Netflix) does so. Like I said, I wanted to see it a long time ago, but this week 2 different people threw it right out in front of me and I am glad they did. I look forward to watching it again.

I have been considering to write about this for 5 days now but had no idea how to convey my thoughts on the film. Do I write is from the perspective of the film itself? As in, the writing, directing, story, acting etc....or do I write it based on the man himself and what he did for our country? There has been so much press both positive and negative. I cannot remember the last time a film that was not strictly a documentary became such a hot button topic. "The Interview" maybe, but that was a completely different can of worms. I don't think they compare in the same realm of the controversy they birthed. Apples and Oranges. I have read so much about what people think about what Chris Kyle was to America and of course I have my own opinion, so I am going to try and stay on point with a review of the film itself. Anyone who watched Lone Survivor knows how powerful and nerve racking a movie can feel. This film is not nearly as nerve racking as Lone Survivor, but I enjoyed it more. Lone Survivor is great, but it is 100% a war film. American Sniper is a Life film. It follows Chief Kyle into war, but that is only half the film. The other half is his home life. I did not know the sequence of events that the film was going to cover. I read the book beforehand (which if you know me, you will know how rare it is that I read) and the film follows it very well. Chris Kyle was not the perfect man, perfect soldier, perfect husband. He was not even the perfect sniper according to him, but he was the best he could be. The film follows his life from an early age rodeo cowboy through his enlistment and SEAL training, marriage, kids, and most of all, his missions. The way Eastwood puts the timelines together is such a perfect way to keep the film moving forward through the years. I rather enjoyed that the film showed his first tour, along with his first kill, key missions on that tour, and then he would go home for a bit till his next tour. This happens four times and like I said, this is less of a war movie and more about the human condition. Chief Kyle seemed to be on a different plain than most other humans. He felt more at home on the battlefield than he did in bed with his wife. He did not know how to shut off, and this caused him major problems when he was back stateside. When the Oscar nominations came out and Bradley Cooper made the cut for Best Actor, and Jake Gyllenhaal was snubbed for his fantastic work on Nightcrawler I was confused. That was until I saw Cooper embody Chris Kyle in every aspect. He deserves that nomination and at times I was watching this broken man, and I became emotional for Chris Kyle though I was watching an actor. That is a performance second to none. As for the debate of this film glorifying war, or being propaganda, or Kyle being a "serial killer" which is absurb, I would like to quote a man that wrote it down better than I could have.

It was a powerful and touching film. The movie was more of an exploration of PTSD and the nature of war than it was a lauding of Chief Kyle. He is no doubt an American hero that saved many lives and deserves respect for that in itself. The movie portrayed Chief Kyle as a fallible man. A man with problems. A man with a heart. A man's man. A man that struggled despite his apparent strength and legend. This was not a pro-war film or a propaganda film. American Sniper is about a subsection of our society that many have no idea even exists and by no means understands the pain and trauma they endure while endeavoring for America. Fighting and dying for their brothers in arms. This was a movie that needed to be made. Not just for Chief Kyle's legacy, but rather for the world to understand who our military people are." - Bryan Seaver

This is one of those films that come along every once in a while that make you wonder why can't all writers be this original? It is a very small idea turned into a very crazy two hours of entertainment. I do feel that Jake Gyllenhaal may be one of the best working actors today. He rivals the likes of Brad Pitt, Michael Fassbender, and Tom Hardy in my opinion. This is one of his best roles and it should earn him Oscar gold, and at the very least, a nomination. All the buzz that surrounded this film had me so intrigued I chose to go see it as soon as I could, only to realize I had no idea what the premise was. I knew Lou (Gyllenhaal) was a freelance video journalist, but other than that, it was kind of set up as a thriller. It was about 70% thriller, but it was mostly him adapting and evolving into the best, not necessarily most ethical, video crime scene journalist working in LA. I will say, there was not a single time Lou was on screen that I felt comfortable. In fact, this may have been the most uncomfortable I have ever been in a theatre. His character is just off a little and the writing was so good, we as an audience, didn't know if he was going to come unhinged and hurt someone or if he really was just an anti social, awkward man who just really enjoyed the career he had become so fond of. Lou has an outlook on life that many won't understand. The word sociopath comes to mind. The first hour of the film is pretty slow, but very intriguing. The second half of the film is fireworks. The direction is beautiful and very reminiscent of Drive with Ryan Gosling. Every aspect of this movie was very solid, yet I don't know many people I would recommend it to. I think people will enjoy it, but I also wonder how many will hate it because of its tone and tempo which I had to get used to during the film's first act. The ultimate goal is to understand how far Lou will go for the big story.

My desire to see this film declined every single time a new promo or trailer or clip was released. It looked serious and awesome then it began to look cheesy and silly and just plain stupid. However, I have kids who wanted to see it, and I had nothing else to do, so here we go. I cannot remember the last time I left the theater feeling so conflicted on how I felt about what I had just seen. I enjoyed the story, the look of the turtles, the action involving the turtles, and the comedy. I did not enjoy Shredder or Splinter. I will say Megan Fox was very lovely. She did fantastic as April O'Neil. The tempo of the film was its strong suit. It didn't take a half hour to meet the turtles. The action sequences were timed well with the comedic scenes, and the origin of the turtles flashback scenes I actually enjoyed. The dynamic of the turtles was mostly the same that I remember from the old days with the exception of Donatello. In this version he was a tech genius which helps a lot with their missions. Leo is still the leader and though Johnny Knoxville didn't steal the show, he did a good job with that character. Mikey provided 100% of the comedy and I really enjoyed his dialogue and jokes. He cracked us up loads of times. However, they absolutely nailed Raphael as the brooding second fiddle who is generally pissed off. He was awesome and his attitude worked well with the general lightheartedness of his 3 brothers. He had the look and provided the most ass whoopings. As good as the CG was for the turtles, it was equally awful for Splinter. I found myself loathing scenes when he was on screen. It looked like they copy and pasted him from the original movie in 1990. As for Shredder, I liked what they did with the character in the beginning, but what ruined him for me was his ridiculous suit of armor....and lack of cape. He had way too much going on, and it angered me when he was fighting. However, in my personal opinion the bad does not outweigh the good. I had a fun time watching the turtles back on the big screen, seeing my kids sit completely still and laughing at Michelangelo's antics while quoting the jokes immediately after, so all in all, it's a decent movie experience.

I was so looking forward to this sequel until it received astronomically good reviews and then I made the decision that I would see it in the theater at any cost. Though it took me 4 weeks, it was worth the wait. This film picks up 10 years after James Franco released Caesar into the woods on good terms after the Golden Gate bridge debacle between the newly educated apes and the humans. Now, other than knowing the apes have evolved even more than when we left them last, I wasn't sure how much. I wasn't sure what the new ape society looked like. I didn't know how much time was between the end of the first film and the beginning of the second. Honestly, I didn't know a whole lot about this film. Why Franco wasn't in it? Who Jason Clarke and Gary Oldman played? Luckily, it does a fantastic job in the opening credits explaining everything you may have questions about and then into the film we go. I was actually really impressed how this was written. Being able to go that far into the future and seeing a world that has basically been all but extinct of human activity is awesome. The scenery of San Francisco all grown over with vegetation looked great, but I was surprised at how little the ape population had evolved. With the rapid brain growth in the first film, one would expect in ten years, they may be running the world, but it is a much different story than that. They are still establishing themselves as a hierarchy in civilization, though they aren't even aware how smart they have become. They still live among the trees (kick ass tree houses, but still the woods) and believe all humans are gone for good. This is when it gets interesting. Humans cross the apes path in the woods and decisions are made. Not by the humans, but by Caesar, leader of the apes. The relationship Caesar embraces with this film's hero, Malcolm (Jason Clarke) is quite astonishing. It is like two governments talking peace treaties. Caesar is the most intelligent ape, but some of the apes do not agree with his views on the humans and this causes strife among them. Not only do we get to see the evolution of the apes, but also of the relationships between the apes and humans, the humans and humans, and the apes and apes. It really is like watching the birth of coexisting civilizations. This is most definitely the second film in what could be wrapped up nicely in a trilogy, but could also extend to a fourth film. The digital effects are flawless and there is no better visual than apes riding horses. The film does not fall short anywhere in my opinion. It runs a little long, but I'm not sure what I would cut. It all seems relevant. A+ performances by all involved and Andy Serkis should be recognized for an Oscar as Caesar. The motion capture suit actors work as hard or harder than the other actors on the screen but are not recognized for any awards. If anything, add a new category to Oscar night specifically for these unsung heroes of today's CG heavy cinema experience. If you like the Franco film, you will LOVE this one. More action, more drama, flawless effects. The whole 9 yards of good movie making. I cannot wait for the third film and to see what direction they take it.
Do not expect anything magnificent or awe inspiring or, in my opinion, anything that even gives us a glimpse into future Marvel movies or future cameos. What it is, is the perfect end credits scene for a comedy like Guardians and I like it.
Now lets talk about the brilliant marketing scheme behind GotG. I knew without a doubt I was going to see this film. What I didn't know was what it was about. I never read the comics, ignored all articles based on plot points and theories, and I really tried to disconnect myself from the hype. What I now know, is Marvel gave us no indication of exactly what the Guardians were going to do, and that made the film all the more great. The super unknown to me as a viewer. I did know that we were supposed to get more Thanos (Josh Brolin voiced), and more of The Collector (Benicio Del Toro) as first introduced in Thor: The Dark World. What I didn't know was how little we would actually see them, and what little impact they would have on the actual plot. This movie is about Ronan the Accuser (Lee Pace) and his fight for <strike>World</strike> Universe domination. Lee Pace surprised me with his casting. The role that stands out in my mind was the short lived TV Dramedy "Pushing Daisies", and to take that and make him one of the most evil villains in the Marvel Universe made me concerned. Put that to bed. He is AWESOME.
This is where I may surprise you. This is the funniest comedy of the year, and with a sold out crowd and uproarious laughter, I am afraid I missed the follow up jokes and quips that would make it even better. This band of misfits are the Galaxy's rejects and they must band together to stop Ronan.
Star-Lord (Chris Pratt) is the only Earthling in the film and though all the trailers make him out to be the forefront of this film, he does get over shadowed. I'm not saying he isn't brilliant, because he is, but this cast just works fluidly together, he isn't relied on to carry the film on his shoulders.
Drax the Destroyer is played by professional wrestler Dave Bautista, and this casting made me nervous as well. All I was thinking was he may not have many lines or interaction other than being some visual muscle for the screen. Turns out, he was great as well. He delivered several memorable moments that adds to the whole of what the film wanted to be. Director James Gunn (who wrote the script as well) really got the best from all of his actors and sometimes that is difficult to do.

Gamora (Zoe Saldana) is the least interesting character to me. She is a master assassin that was engineered which was neat, but with everything else going on, she didn't add that much for me personally. A few scenes of comic relief, Wait, can you have comic relief in a comedy? Ok, let's just say she had a couple jokes that were fun.

I saved the best for last. Groot and Rocket. These two come as a pair and that is the way it has to be. These characters stole the show, specifically Rocket. An engineered Raccoon who doesn't know what a raccoon is. His sidekick and BFF Groot, it a semi talking tree that only says 3 words no matter what he asked or told. I AM GROOT. If anyone wondered how you could make a viable character that is a walking tree and only have 3 words of dialogue, will love this. His inflection in the 3 words just change, but it is the emotions in his face that are so beautifully crafted. Hands down, He and Rocket got the most laughs, but what I was most interested in was the performances that Vin Diesel brings to Groot. Voice over characters can make or break an entire film. Many times these performances are "phoned in" if you will. Merely seen as an easy payday for so many actors (I'm looking at you Megatron...Hugo Weaving). Bradly Cooper, however, did the best I have ever heard. So much attitude, and sarcasm, and confusion, and emotion. He brought Rocket to life and I really appreciated it. Vin Diesel on the other hand is as much of an "A-Lister" as can be, and to have the faith in a project that only requires 3 words over and over is pretty amazing. He really embraced it though. So much so, that he dubbed his lines in 5 other languages for the international cuts of the film. Watch all 5 clips here. That is commitment that he probably wasn't contracted to do, but he gives his characters everything he has.
As an action film, the movie is flawless. As a comedy it is also flawless. To be able to combine these two genres and have a film that knows what it is, is amazing. I will watch it again and again, mostly to hear those jokes I may have missed while laughing at the other jokes. Also it has the best soundtrack ever. All those promos with the golden oldies paying, plays a major part of the film and it is just another nuance that made Guardians so great.
It is hard to make a sequel better than the first. Everyone knows it, and for film makers, it is an uphill battle. Thor: The Dark World, in my opinion, is a better film than Thor. Not just Better, but MUCH better. More entertaining, a better plot, and more action.....oh, and Loki of course. Lots more of Loki. I found it more entertaining mainly due to the fact that much of the film deals with the 9 realms as opposed to being 100% on Earth like the first film. I was very interested in the mythology, and they delivered a more in depth look at Asgard and the goings on with Thor's home. They deal with worm holes, different dimensions and an all powerful substance called the Aether. The Aether can be absorbed into ones body to make that being all powerful, and the dark elves plan to use it to bring their civilization back into existence. Once believed to be extinct, the dark elves are evil and want to destroy and pillage and abolish all light from everywhere. In the darkness is where they thrive and would be rulers. The Aether was also believed to have been destroyed, but leave it to a woman to rediscover the undiscoverable, putting the entire 9 realms at risk of termination. Way to go Jane Foster. Thor must now figure out how to stop the elves and destroy the Aether once and for all. A pretty daunting task but if anyone could do it, it would be Chris Hemsworth. After Loki was lost, essentially dead after the first film, only to show up and try and rule Earth in the Avengers, I was excited to see him again in this film. Imprisoned back on Asgard for his crimes, he is dealing with a lot of emotions pertaining to his brother Thor. Mostly hatred but when his help is needed, he steps to the plate and gives another A+ Tom Hiddleston performance. Loki is the ultimate villain. We love him and hate him, but as villains go, he has always seemed a little too PG-13. Just not quite bad enough to succeed. As an ally, we seem to forget how bad Loki has been. That is what makes a great character. The anti hero that we love to hate, but also just like in general. When Thor came out years ago, that seemed like such a pointless character to give a series, but he is more entertaining than most and Hemsworth is Thor. I also enjoyed the end credits scene introducing Benicio Del Toro as The Collector. I can't wait to see what role he has in future Marvel films.

I was the first to say how bad 21 Jump Street was gonna be. Then I watched it, and it was my favorite comedy of the year it came out. Of course it was gonna get sequel. It was a sleeper hit that has continued it's fan fare on cable over the last year. I watch it every time I come across it. I didn't have to get on board with 22 Jump Street due to the fact I never exited the Jump Street train. I had to see this film and then the reviews came out better than the first one, and people seemed to love it. I will say, I LOVED it. it is brilliant in so many ways, that it is hard to even know where to begin. Maybe the fact that it makes fun of itself and its predecessor constantly. Maybe it is the complete unapologetic repetition of jokes and dialogue we already saw two years ago. Actually, I know what made it a step above the first one, but it needs to be seen and not read about. At the same time, the scenes that made 22 so good, would not be possible without 21, so I'm not sure where I stand in the strange conundrum I found myself in. Schmidt and Jenko are back at the undercover gig in college this time. It would seem that they would have more of a grasp on that generation with their age, but they are still just as lost. The main premise: Find the dealer, locate the supplier. Just like 21. It becomes quite enjoyable as a viewer to see how many lines they can repeat. They do it a lot and it is awesome. In fact, I cannot recall another film, that is not intentionally a spoof, that could get away with this kind of transparency. The writer/director duo who are also responsible for The Lego Movie may be my new favorite people in Hollywood. They have truly unique minds. I don't want to take anything away from my man crush (Channing) and his unique ability to be hilarious, athletic, and dumb simultaneously. He and Jonah Hill are superb and I cannot wait for 39 Jump Street: Ninja School. As fun as the movie was, even with a regurgitated story, I was so happy to see Ice Cube get more screen time after his limited time in 21 offered so many great lines. He does not disappoint. Jon Benjamin as the football coach was a pleasant surprise. To hear Sterling Archer screaming at players was pretty classic, and all I could think of was LANA!!!!!!! The film is not in depth but it is very hard to write about, because I don't like writing spoilers, especially spoilers about jokes that should be surprises for the first time viewer. That is why I am just gonna cut this short with this. GO SEE THIS MOVIE!!!
P.S. Greatest end credits ever

This film has an extremely long title, but there are a few other titles it could be known by. I'm aware of where it's title is derived from, but examples of alternate titles could be, "The Magneto show 2", or "X-Men First Class; second period", and I personally like "Beast Mode". Now, what is amazing about this film to me more so than the absolute fantastic script, and superb direction are the amount of phenomenal actors on screen throughout the film. Merging old and new is just so much fun for the audience who saw the first film in theatres back in 2000. As for the new generation who would not know what a good film was if it bit them in the ass, well, who cares what they think. I enjoyed it and that is all that really matters. The absolute cohesiveness of every aspect of this film is quite impressive, but more than that, is the fact that these guys made a "comic book" film that felt more like a science fiction drama than any of the other Marvel films. It is so apocalyptic, the opening scene feels like a post Skynet Earth. It is just depressing what they make the future feel like. I do consider myself a geek for the sci fi, but I am not that familiar with this story. Apparently Bryan Singer did it a very good job not only appeasing the uber comic book aficionado, but also making the 7th X-Men (if you count the two Wolverine films) super enjoyable to the popcorn eating, summer blockbuster going, casual movie lover. It was easy to follow which is also appealing. More drama than comedy, and the usual one line zingers were also enjoyable.

The plot revolves around Mystique, and her agenda to right the wrongs of the human population. One human in particular. Dr. Trask (Peter Dinklage; the little dude from Game of Thrones and Elf and In Bruges etc...) has a disdain for mutants and has developed the Sentinel program to hunt and destroy or capture all mutants on Earth. Mystique feels he need not exist anymore which causes the bleak future. The brilliance of this story is how it evolves as time runs by on screen. Every action results in a reaction sort of thing. In the future, Xavier and Magneto know what has to be done, but with sending Logan's psyche back in time, (sorry, should have said "spoiler" there) things get very discombobulated in the space time continuum. Apparently changing the future is a bit tricky. Magneto is up to his old tricks and Fassbender is brilliant in the role, but Nicolas Hoult as young Beast steals the show for me. He is so damn good, it is unfair to whomever is sharing the screen with him at the time. All in all, this film is near flawless. There are several new mutants introduced but not much fanfare. Most of them feel like side notes except for Quicksilver. I do actually wish he had more scenes. His scene was the most fun to watch. There is one F&@# bomb that is unnecessary, but in the specific context it is used, it's actually quite enjoyable. It just sucks because that one word may deter many parents from letting their kids watch this film, and that is the real travesty. However, this film is way more for adults than kids. Story wise more than anything. It does not have near the action sequences than its predecessors, and is way more cerebral than those as well. The younger people may not get it.

This may be one the most accurate portrayals of what it is like for new parents to transition in to their new adulthood and leave behind their youth. Neighbors is sort of a coming of age film. Instead of adolescents into adulthood, it is more like adulthood into parenthood. This is more of a subplot than what the film is really about. It is about having shit-ass neighbors. Adults buy homes in nice neighborhood because they are done with the college, party scene. Having a fraternity rent the house next door would be an absolute nightmare. Now throw a baby into the mix, and that is grounds for World War 3, which is basically the premise of this film. At only 96 minutes, it is quick to the point, but doesn't fail to payoff. The trailer actually does this film justice. It makes you want to see it because it is chock full of jokes, but there is so much more content available than what we have seen already. I knew I liked Zac Efron (probably because he doesn't seem like a douche in real life), but now I like him unapologetically for playing a douche so well on screen. As for Rogen, well, he is Rogen. Same guy, new movie. Not that that's a bad thing, but we know what we are gonna get, and this role suits him. The junior Franco is getting better with every role, and I like that he is inching his way up the ladder into leading role status with every film. It won't be long till he is top billed in a film of his own. The fraternity to me was an afterthought. I was more interested and intrigued by how the married people would handle the situations. They did not disappoint. It seems like the writers finally got early thirty married people right. We are not that different than we were before had kids. We just have less time to do stuff. Same people, no time. Mac (Rogen) and Kelly (Rose Byrne) want to be apart of life still, but are struggling, so when a frat moves in, they do not want to be the uncool, old people. When Mac has had enough, he makes a vital error. He calls the police. From here on out, hilarity ensues. Not only from the frat, but to watch the responsible adults go to such lengths to shut them down is just awesome. There are very few emotionally heavy moments in this comedy, but the couple that are present are necessary to make the film complete. It is a complete film and we enjoyed it immensely.

I am not sure I remember how to do this. I have not written in some time now, but I feel this film has enough chatter, controversy compared to the source material, and plenty of comparison to The Hunger Games to make it a fun write up. I will admit, I had very little knowledge of what this film was even about when I bought the tickets. With today's social media, it is hard to not know anything about a pop culture event, and yet I was clueless about Divergent. It doesn't take but a few scenes to know exactly what direction this film would go, but with its low Rotten Tomato rating, I was concerned about how the execution would transpire. Turns out, Very Good execution in my opinion. In this post apocalyptic world, the particular culture where this story takes place is made up of 5 factions. Sectors made up of people who have chosen what their particular lot in life will be. It sounds more complicated than it actually is. The film is about one girl's Journey into adulthood. Once the adolescents enter adulthood, they must choose to stay with their family in the faction which they were raised, or choose a new life path. Tris is our main character and her life is completely changed when she chooses to leave her faction for another. The problem is more about her mentality than her choice. This is not the easiest film to write about without spoiling some aspect of it, so I am going to go another direction and stop talking plot, and just give my insight about the film as a whole. I don't read books, so I cannot compare the film to the book, but at 2 hours 20 minutes, it didn't feel full of holes, and it also did not seem to drag on. I did not feel lost at any point, and I was just excited to see what came next. As for The Hunger Games comparison, I get it, and I don't. Post Apocalyptic world. Teenagers finding their way in life. One organization seeking control. These minor points aside, this film is nothing like Hunger Games. Kids don't have to hunt each other to feed their sector. Mostly, everyone gets along pretty well. Just a bunch of people trying to find their new way in life. Divergent refers to a certain type of person, and of course the heroine happens to be a divergent which is why the movie is interesting. All in all I cannot get it out of my head. Due to this fact, I have come to the conclusion that I enjoyed it as much as and maybe a hair more than Hunger Games. I am excited for the sequel and I hope the direction, adaptation, and acting live up to this first film.
No desire, but if I don't have to pay for it, I have 2 hours to kill, and alcohol is readily available to me...Then, what the hell?! Surprise, surprise. It's a comedy. Who knew? The first 20 minutes are hilarious, and because it doesn't take itself too serious, it is easier to swallow when it goes into alien action mode. Peter Berg directed a good movie. He hooks the audience with a very lighthearted, comedic driven plot involving 2 very different brothers. Now, I am about to do something I have not yet done. I began this review the day after seeing Battleship, but only got the first paragraph down before forgetting about for months. In those months, Battleship has easily become one of the most entertaining "garage movies" / "entertaining background noise" films readily viewable on the cable movie channels. I now have seen it more than 5 times, albeit, in bits and pieces and always starting from a different point in the film. I cannot believe how much I enjoy it. It is more fun and funny each time, and before I knew who "Meth Damon" from Breaking Bad was, I enjoyed his character's gecko analogy in this film. By now we all know the gist of this loose interpretation of the Hasbro semi electronic board game of the 1980's. For those of you who haven't seen it, you may not be aware of some of it's high points. High points, not just for this film, but for any film. When the human race is facing an alien invasion that essentially attack our electronically dependent US Navy, while bolstering tech and weapons we cannot fathom, let alone defend, it is looking quite grim. A film depending on a colorful character base, Battleship gives the audience something to root for. The film has no identity issues, and that works for it. It never feels lost, or wandering. As for the high points I speak of, they involve our veterans manning an old diesel war ship that has to be manned by MEN. They run this diesel rig that the alien force cannot take "offline", and the final act is literally goose bump, pridefully chilling. I feel I can promote this film way better because I have seen it so many more times. It is the epitome of a popcorn movie summer blockbuster, but it is definitely worth anyone's time who wants to see great action, great comedy, decent plot, and brilliant climax.
Mainly because it was an indie film and indie films tend to be better than regular films. It didn't hurt that it had a 100 percent on Rotten Tomatoes up until last week. For the first 10 minutes I knew it was going to be good. The story of two young boys who find a boat up in a tree on an abandoned island near their home in Mississippi. Hey immediately begin to wonder how to get out of the tree so they can have it. What they soon realised was someone was living in that boat and this is where the story is very very interesting. Enter Mud, played by Matthew McConaughey. Mud is a very interesting fellow, and from the moment they met him, the boys are not quite sure about him. All the boys know is this is strange man jettisoned out on an island, living in a boat with nothing more than the clothes on his back. mud immediately asked these boys for help and though Neckbone (great nickname) did not want to help, but Ellis had different thoughts. Mud needs food and Ellis is a kind boy who wants to help. As the story unfolds and we learn more about Mud and all his interesting theologies, all we really care about is Ellis and his life. We become very invested in his story and his convictions. This is a 14 year old boy who has never had anything. He works with his Dad for very little, they live on the river, and nothing seems that interesting until Mud. Mud gives these boys things to do, but they don't know why. When Mud comes clean as to what he is doing there, the story gets very intense. In a film with Sam Shepard, McConaughey, and Reese Witherspoon, these two nubie actors steal the show. A very interesting film that is very well put together, and though at times not much seems to be going on, we are very invested. That is the sign of a great film. The last 15 minutes are some of the most riveting theatre rocking I have done in quite a while. When it was over, it did not turn out how I expected. It was better. This is a very easy movie to watch because there is so much mystery behind the lead characters, we are constantly hanging on for more details, and as those details evolve, we are glad we took the time to watch a movie no one has heard about.

NBM rates Mud - Phenomenal

Let's put it this way. As if I wasn't already stoked for SW: Episode 7 (Strange opener, I know) with JJ at the helm, now I feel I must seclude my life to living in a bubble so as not to die prematurely before it arrives. Trek to me is an awesome precursor into our future of the "other" Sci Fi series JJ will take over. It gives us a very good peak into what this man can do with an epic scale of space and time proportions. I know to you "Trekkies" I have just blastphemed on high, but I don't care. I am not the one who hired JJ to cross into a galaxy far far away, so I feel I can mention the 2 movies in the same paragraph. Let me also say this. Into Darkness is no Iron Man 3. I actually liked it better. Maybe it's the fact I am not as versed in Trek's theology, or maybe it is because we have had a steady dose of Marvel for years now, but had to wait 4 LONG years on this sequel. Either way, Into Darkness starts off strong and with a run time right at 2 hours, it never really slows down. It is intense, dramatic, nail biting inducing, and quite comedic. I went in knowing I would enjoy it, but not really knowing the premise, or the villain it felt like a brand new thing in my life that has been missing. It is smart, well thought out, and visually stimulating.
The film may be one of the best I have seen to combine this smart of a plot, perfectly placed comedic one liners, and action parallel with anything Marvel puts out. Now I know I am comparing this film to other franchises, but I want you all to understand how worthy of your time it is. To me, Trek has always been sub par with everything else I loved. Now, it is turning into a series I can get behind. Spock and Kirk have their great chemistry once again, but Benedict Cumberbatch steals the show as the villain, John Harrison. He aims to turn the star fleet on it's ear, and does a pretty good job at it, but his plans are way bigger and at this point in the film, it gets very fun and interesting. It twists and turns, but it very fluid in it's delivery. As good as the first one? Absolutely. I believe I like this one a little better. It's just so AWESOME. Along with the fantastic leads in the film, stand out performances are delivered by the brilliant Simon Pegg as Scotty, Karl Urban as Bones, and Zoe Saldana as Uhura. I cannot think of any part of this film that I didn't enjoy. JJ even did a good job of not throwing promiscuous 3D shots in the film that would have no bearing on the non 3D viewer. I saw a couple but they were not exaggerated, and they were quick. If you liked the first one, you will like this one. If this looks good to you, go watch it. It is all around outstanding.

Iron Man 3 was easily one of my most anticipated films to see in 2013, and I was lucky enough to see it 2 days before its actual release date. I could not have been more stoked to see where the third installment took us. Seems a bad taste from Iron Man 2 has been lingering for years with the general public, but that was never my stance. No Iron Man film will ever be as good as the origin story all those years ago, but for the second film to be dogged the way it was is just the evolution of how series like this tend to work. The fact that it was so despised opened an enormous window for success for a third film. People were so ready to forget about that film and to love Iron Man once again. It did up the ante coming off such a powerful Tony Stark presence in last year's Avengers, and for me, I was very curious how that film would tie into this film. It does a great job of using a few callbacks, while not relying on them to carry this film. Thor is mentioned. New York is mentioned, and The Avengers are mentioned. Shield only comes up once, and overall it is just done perfectly. Iron Man 3 is the first film to be released under the Marvel banner "Phase 2", which is their genius concept of tying the entire Marvel universe together through a series of films and characters so vast, it will take years. It is a bit risky, but it is paying out in dividends. I, for one, welcome a film company taking a risk like this. For one, it gives us tons of new material we may not have been privy to before. Characters are getting introduced in droves and with such an artistic elegance, it keeps us wanting more. I have titled this review as Spoiler Free, because I read very little about this film as to not spoil anything for myself. That being said, everything I write is common knowledge in my opinion. If you have a TV, none of the details about to be given should spoil anything.

First off, I am going to start off with a bold statement. Iron Man 3 is way more of a comic book film than any I have seen to date. The reason these films have become so popular is the fact that the realm of possibility seems high in all the most recent comic book genre films. Other than the alien invasion in The Avengers, most of these films deal with humans being mean to other humans. Terrorist organizations, nothing out of the ordinary, blah blah blah. Other than the unlikely tech, the films have basically taken current World problems and inserted them into these films. Iron Man 3 goes a little bit of a different direction. First off, we have a completely different Tony Stark. We pick up with him right after The Avengers war with Loki's army, and the inner torment Stark is dealing with. He has always been the target, but he feels much more vulnerable now, and this plays very well to me. He is just as arrogant and cocky, but not. RDJ is such a good actor, he plays both sides of the spectrum perfectly. One way on the outside, different on the inside. He is a broken man looking for himself, and trying to figure out what to do.

Now we have the villains. We all know the villain is The Mandarin, but what we don't know is what His end game is. Sir Ben Kingsley is AWESOME. Absolutely nothing but mad applause for his portrayal of the middle eastern psychopath. Like all of these recent films, there usually is another villain that comes into play later in the film. I'm sure you will see who this other villain will be pretty early on, but since I do not remember very much trailer footage of him or his character, I will leave that to you to enjoy. He did very well, but The Mandarin is one of the best "Villains" I have ever seen. I was in a state of awe at the direction they took that baddie, and I LOVED it. Brilliant, but I will bet some will not be as enthusiastic as I am. I mentioned the "comic book" feel to it. Comics are great because they are reality (Real people) mixed with fantasy (Tech, powers, paranormal etc) and this film combines them perfectly. I will admit, I was a little on the fence about said "fantasy", but in the end, it played well, because it is a COMIC BOOK.

These movies always introduce new tech, which I love. Another great fantasy aspect to these films. The big one here is the Mark 42 concept armor. It uses nano technology to basically be self sufficient (Unmanned if you will). It can trace Tony's whereabouts through a series of triggers. It is very badass, and also adds a ton of humor to the overall dark subject matter. We also get the War Machine (Cheadle inside) freshly painted and rebranded as The Iron Patriot. Very cool suit, but not much character substance there. Rhodes (Cheadle) has always been an afterthought in these films. Never grabbing at the spotlight, but it works well. A little extra eye candy and a lot of humor.

Lastly we have the action, and CG aspects to this film. This franchise has always been second to none when it comes to GREAT action sequences, and they always use the top CG firm which has delivered a flawless product 3 times in a row now. What action lacked in number 2, made up 10 fold in this installment. The big question is always, Was there enough action? Oh ya. Tons of it, and not all in the Iron Man suit. Tony is wide open at times and has to MacGyver his way out bad situations. Some scenes had so much going on, it seems like it could muddy the visual waters pretty easily, but that is not the case. It is aesthetically pleasing 100% of the time. It is by far the darkest film in the trilogy, and still not quite as good as the original, but this film is tons of fun, and if I had the time, I would see it again.

**Now a little story about my experience with the end credits and how it almost ruined my night. I have been reading for weeks that there was a scene at the end of the credits and even the guest character was revealed. I did not read who that character was going to be as I like to be surprised. While sitting through what seemed to be the longest credits of ALL time, all 9 of the other audience members left as it was 1 am and an employee screening. They did not feel like sticking around. To me, what's another 7 minutes at 1 in the morning? With what had to be about 2 minutes to pay dirt, the projectionist (not Mitchell) SHUT IT DOWN. I was appalled. Luckily this digital age we live in, this grave error was not so quickly amended. He fired it back up, which started the movie at the beginning and then proceeded to hit fast forward. I watched 2 hours and 15 minutes again over a 2 minute span. Pretty funny. Was it worth it? YES. Even my Brother, who doesn't care for Easter eggs the way I do, Laughed out loud at the one 30 second scene which has absolutely no bearing on the film itself, or the Phase 2 Marvel plan at all. It is merely one last comical scene for you all to enjoy.

Arnold is back, and to me, he is back in a big way. He returns to leading man glory in a film that represents everything that made him famous in the first place. An 80's actioner with cheese ball one liners and a plot that doesn't take too many brain cells to keep up. I had 2 beers during and I never lost focus on the end goal of the film. I really have to thank Sly Stallone on this one. If he hadn't brought back a dead genre with The Expendables 1 and 2, then films like may never have seen the light of day again. When an international Drug lord breaks out of maximum security transfer, all hell breaks loose. The thug is in a very nice Corvette, speeding cross country in a hurry to get back to Mexico and away from the United States law enforcement. When he feels he is home free, the last thing he would expect would be resistance from a 60+ year old, small town sheriff. What he got was one bad ass firefight. Luckily for Ray (Arnold), one of his residents happens to be the curator of a local military museum. Lewis (Knoxville) has accumulated such an array of fire power, and has one of the funniest business plans I have ever heard. He is easily the most obvious comic relief in the film, however, Luis Guzman and Arnold himself add many lighthearted one liners that you will probably take for granted. The Last Stand is a great return to form in more than one way. All in all, this film is definitely worth the price of admission, and it holds the best kill scene I can remember in quite some time. Hint, it involves Arnold on a roof top. Honestly, I don't imagine you will be shocked by where this film takes you. A very pleasurable nowhere.
Of the 5 Die Hard films, this one is easily my least favorite. Will I buy it on DVD? Yes. I have a series to complete. However, as much as everyone hated the 4th installment, at least it was smart. This one has very little going for it. It does have John McClane though, and that is always good enough for me. This is the Epitome of a popcorn movie. Thin plot, not to hard to follow, and it is a film solely based on the action. Action does not fill the gaps between extremely smart nuances and plot points, but instead it serves as the fruit of the entire film. What the film does well, it actually does great...and that makes sense. For example, Bruce Willis is getting older, and that comes into quite a few punch lines. Brilliant. The car chase scene through the streets of Russia, though very unbelievable, is awesome and the fact it took over 30 days to film it, makes me love it even more. Why was a NY city cop in Russia? To find his son who is on trial for murder. Ok, makes sense. The plot unfolds from here in just a few minutes and then we get to see McClane and son kick ass on an international level like McClane's do. This way, that way, then like a flash in the pan, it's all wrapped up in a nice neat little package. As far as the whole film goes, it is rather enjoyable. With that said, if it had been any other film, say, a film not directed related to such a prominent franchise, I may have respected it more. It did fall a little flat for me being the return of John McClane and all, but still worth a watch and worth buying to complete the series. Any other movie wouldn't get as graceful a rating, but John McClane alone boosts this film right to the middle of the road.
I was beyond excited to be finally getting a gangster noir picture. I cannot remember ever enjoying one at the theatre. September 2012 could not get here fast enough and then some jackass shoots up a theatre in Colorado, which was awful, delaying the release of this film by 4 months to allow the film's makers to do re-shoots and to cut a scene involving a historical event from the 1940's involving guns in a theatre. Doesn't make sense to me, but we can't always make everyone happy. It focuses on Mickey Cohen's (Sean Penn) rise to the top of the LA crime scene in 1949, and the cops commissioned in taking him down. All you need to do is have a look at the cast and you should be well aware this will be great. Headlined by a very smash mouth John O'Mara (Josh Brolin) and then on his right hip is the very soft spoken, doesn't even believe in his job anymore, Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling). These two guys are fire and ice. Then much like the fantastic film, "The Untouchables", they put together a group of guys that aren't afraid to die for badge and honor. Only difference is, The Gangster Squad is a completely off the books operation. No Honors and no badges. This film has everything that makes any film great. Action, Sex, History, Guns, Explosions, and of course, Ryan Gosling. It is fun, because of the execution, and what few comedy aspects you can have in such a highly dramatic film. This squad was not perfect right off the blocks. Not even close. Trial by fire is more like it. They got some traction and Mickey Cohen started getting angry. He started putting some pieces together, and end the end it was a battle of wills. Which side would give up first? Good vs Evil, and I cannot wait to watch it again. Some may argue this is not a true gangster movie. I agree. It is a cop drama that focuses on the good and less on the evil. Still immensely enjoyable, and at times, very gritty. If you are squeamish at the site of blood, you may want to skip the opening scene. I, on the other hand, saw it as a breath of fresh air in an industry scared to take risks in today's society. Top notch performances from everyone on screen, and the only disappointment I have is the lack of Nick Nolte. I understand why he could not be more present, but he is so awesome.
