Robocopy is a robust file copying program built into Windows similar to UNIX rsync. It is a much better method of copying large datasets or lots of files across volumes and is a great tool for backing up data. It has the ability to resume copies if interrupted, various options and logging during copying.

Robust File and Folder Copy.
By default Robocopy will only copy a file if the source and destination have different time stamps or different file sizes.

Syntax
ROBOCOPY Source_folder Destination_folder [files_to_copy] [options]

Key
file(s)_to_copy : A list of files or a wildcard.
(defaults to copying *.*)

Source options
/S : Copy Subfolders.
/E : Copy Subfolders, including Empty Subfolders.
/A : Copy only files with the Archive attribute set.
/M : like /A, but remove Archive attribute from source files.
/LEV:n : Only copy the top n LEVels of the source tree.

/MAXAGE:n : MAXimum file AGE - exclude files older than n days/date.
/MINAGE:n : MINimum file AGE - exclude files newer than n days/date.
(If n < 1900 then n = no of days, else n = YYYYMMDD date).

/FFT : Assume FAT File Times (2-second date/time granularity).
Use this when copying files to a linux NAS or other non-windows file system.

/256 : Turn off very long path (> 256 characters) support.

Copy options

/SJ : Copy Junctions as Junctions instead of the junction target.

Performance tweaks

/COMPRESS : Request SMB network compression during file transfer, if applicable.
/J : Copy using unbuffered I/O (recommended for large files).
/NOOFFLOAD : Copy files without using the Windows Copy Offload mechanism.
/IPG:n : Inter-Packet Gap (ms), to free bandwidth on slow lines.
/MT[:n] : Multithreaded copying, n = no. of threads to use (1-128)
default = 8 threads, not compatible with /IPG and /EFSRAW
Redirecting output using /LOG is recommended for even better performance.

/R:n : Number of Retries on failed copies - default is 1 million.
/W:n : Wait time between retries - default is 30 seconds.
/REG : Save /R:n and /W:n in the Registry as default settings.
/TBD : Wait for sharenames To Be Defined (retry error 67).

Destination options

/A+:[RASHCNET] : Set file Attribute(s) on destination files + add.
/A-:[RASHCNET] : UnSet file Attribute(s) on destination files - remove.
/FAT : Create destination files using 8.3 FAT file names only.

/CREATE : CREATE directory tree structure + zero-length files only.
/DST : Compensate for one-hour DST time differences.
/PURGE : Delete dest files/folders that no longer exist in source.
/MIR : MIRror a directory tree - equivalent to /PURGE plus all subfolders (/E)

Job Options

/JOB:jobname : Read parameters from the named JOB file, e.g. multiple /XF files /XD dirs to exclude.
/SAVE:jobname : SAVE parameters to the named job file, this must be the last option, the command will not be run.
The .RCJ job file is an editable text file.
/NOSD : NO Source Directory is specified.
/NODD : NO Destination Directory is specified.
The command-line and job file cannot contain conflicting Source/Destination paths.
In the .RCJ job file, Source/Destination paths can be given as /SD:path and /DD:path
/NOSD and /NODD can be used either on the command line or in the job file.
/QUIT : QUIT after processing command line (to view parameters).
/IF : Include the following Files.

Repeated Copy Options

/MON:n : MONitor source; run again when more than n changes seen.
/MOT:m : MOnitor source; run again in m minutes Time, if changed.
This will continue until you terminate the Robocopy process with Ctrl-C.
The Robocopy /MON process can also be started/stopped by setting the run hours, see below.
/RH:hhmm-hhmm : Run Hours - e.g. /RH:1800-0200
If the robocopy command is launched outside the given hours it will pause until the next start time.
/PF : Check run hours on a Per File (not per pass) basis.

Exclude/Include

/XO : Exclude Older - if destination file exists and is the same date
or newer than the source - don’t bother to overwrite it.
/XC : Exclude Changed files
/XN : Exclude Newer files
/XL : Exclude "Lonely" files and dirs (present in source but not destination)
This will prevent any new files being added to the destination.
/XX : Exclude "eXtra" files and dirs (present in destination but not source)
This will prevent any deletions from the destination. (this is the default)
Will also suppress listing extra destination files in the log.

/XF file [file]... : Exclude Files matching given names/paths/wildcards.
/XD dirs [dirs]... : Exclude Directories matching given names/paths.
XF and XD can be used in combination e.g.

/IA:[RASHCNETO] : Include files with any of the given Attributes.
/XA:[RASHCNETO] : Exclude files with any of the given Attributes.

/IM : Include modified files, copy if the Archive attribute is changed on both the source and destination.
By default robocopy ignores the Archive attribute and looks only at the file size and modified time.
/IS : Include Same, overwrite files even if they are already the same.
/IT : Include Tweaked files.
/XJ : Exclude Junction points from source. (included by default).
/XJD : Exclude junction points from source directories.
/XJF : Exclude junction points from source files.

/MAX:n : MAXimum file size - exclude files bigger than n bytes.
/MIN:n : MINimum file size - exclude files smaller than n bytes.
/MAXLAD:n : MAXimum Last Access Date - exclude files unused since n.
/MINLAD:n : MINimum Last Access Date - exclude files used since n.
(If n < 1900 then n = n days, else n = YYYYMMDD date).

Advanced options

/BYTES : Print sizes as bytes.
/DEBUG : Show debug volume information (undocumented)
/ETA : Show Estimated Time of Arrival of copied files.
/LFSM : Operate in "low free space" mode, enabling copy, pause and resume, see notes below.
/LFSM:n[KMG] : /LFSM, specifying the floor size in [K:Kilo,M:Mega,G:Giga] bytes.
/TIMFIX : FIX file TIMes on all files, even skipped files.
/Z : Copy files in restartable mode (survive network glitch) use with caution as
this significantly reduces copy performance due to the extra logging.
/ZB : Use restartable mode; if access denied use Backup mode. This option significantly
reduces copy performance because of checkpointing.

Robocopy EXIT CODES

By copying only the files that have changed, robocopy can be used to backup very large volumes.

If either the source or desination are a "quoted long foldername" do not include a trailing backslash as this will be treated as an escape character, i.e. "C:\some path\" will fail but "C:\some path\\" or "C:\some path\." or "C:\some path" will work.

If creating a progress logfile with /LOG , specify a destination directory that already exists, robocopy will create the file but will not create a log directory automatically.

/REG Writes to the registry at HKCU\Software\Microsoft\ResKit\Robocopy

/XX (exclude extra) If used in conjunction with /Purge or /Mir, the exclude extra switch will take precedence and prevent any files being deleted from the destination.

The Robocopy /MO 'Monitor source' option can be used to regularly copy new/changed files e.g. database transaction logs.

Running Robocopy commands under PowerShell will add quotation marks to the options creating an "invalid parameter" error, [details], this issue is fixed in the latest version of PowerShell 7.2. In most cases you will find it easier to write a simple batch file and call that from PowerShell.

Long FileNames

When copying a large tree of multiple files and subfolders, it is likely some files will hit or even exceed the NTFS 256 character limit.
ROBOCOPY will accept UNC pathnames including long pathnames over 256 characters long.
Even though Robocopy successfully copies such files, choosing a destination folder with a shorter name than the source folder, can avoid issues such as difficulty accessing the files with Windows Explorer.
ROBOCOPY \work \backup_files\monday — destination needs 15 extra chars in path ✗
ROBOCOPY \workgroups \backup — destination is shorter than source ✓

Junctions and Symbolic Links

For a Directory Symbolic Link, a Junction, or a Hard Link, RoboCopy /S (Copy Subfolders) will follow the source and copy the contents to a standard folder in the destination. For a backup program this is usually the desired behaviour.
For compatibility with old software the User Profile folder contains a number of Junction Points, 'Application Data', 'My Documents', Recent, 'Send To' etc. These can be listed with DIR /ALL %userprofile%
To exclude Junction points from being copied you can use the options /XJ, /XJD, /XJF this will prevent the source files from being copied. The Junction Point itself will not be copied, with or without these flags.
/SL Will copy symbolic links, this will copy a File Symbolic Link only, creating a new symbolic link at the destination.
An NTFS junction point in the Destination will not be deleted by RoboCopy, if you select any options which delete from the destination (/purge, /mir) and the destination contains a junction, RoboCopy will blindly follow that junction and delete the contents.
The /XJ options do not affect this as they only exclude junctions from the source.

File Attributes [RASHCNETO]

These options accept any combination of the following letters, when several are specified, will match if any or all items match:
R – Read only
A – Archive
S – System
H – Hidden
C – Compressed
N – Not content indexed
E – Encrypted
T – Temporary
O - Offline

Server 2016 Deduplicated files.

If you run Robocopy /MIR to mirror a system drive, it will attempt to delete 'dedup' files from \System Volume Information\ if also running in backup mode /B or /ZB it will have the permissions to actually delete them.
To avoid this either exclude \System Volume Information with /XD, or just avoid that combination of switches.

Performance

Multithreaded copying with /MT:n will improve performance until the network and file system latency become the limiting factor, /MT:16 is a good place to start testing.
To limit the network bandwidth used by robocopy, specify the Inter-Packet Gap parameter /IPG:n
This will send packets of 64 KB each followed by a delay of n Milliseconds.
Robocopy will fail to copy files that are locked by other users or applications, so limiting the number of retries with /R:0 will speed up copying by skipping any in-use files. The Windows Volume Shadow Copy service is the only Windows subsystem that can copy open files. Robocopy does not use the Volume Shadow Copy service, but it can backup a volume shadow that has already been created with VSHADOW or DISKSHADOW.

NTFS Permissions

/B (backup mode) will allow Robocopy to override file and folder permission settings (ACLs).
ERROR 5 (0x00000005) Changing File Attributes ... Access is denied
This error usually means that File/Folder permissions or Share permissions on either the source or the destination are preventing the copy, either change the permissions or run the command in backup mode with /B.
To run ROBOCOPY under a non-administrator account will require SeBackupPrivilege (backup files privilege), to copy security information auditing privilege is also required, plus of course you need at least read access to the files and folders.
All versions of Robocopy will copy security information (ACLs) for files and directories, but will not copy ACL security changes unless the file itself has also changed. The /SEC /SECFIX options can be used to refresh any ACL changes even if the file/folder itself is unchanged.

Low Free Space Mode (LFSM)

LFSM was added specifically for use with a target enabled for Azure File Sync cloud tiering. This switch is useful only for targets with tiered storage that might run out of local capacity before Robocopy finishes.
In LFSM mode, robocopy will pause whenever a file copy would cause the destination volume’s free space to go below a ‘floor’ value, which can be explicitly specified by the LFSM:n form of the flag. If LFSM is specified with no explicit floor value, the floor is set to 10% of the destination volume’s size.
Low Free Space Mode is incompatible with the /MT, /EFSRAW, /B and /ZB options.

Bugs

Robocopy /MOVE or /PURGE can be used to delete empty folders by setting source and destination to the same folder, but this does not always deal with nested empty folders in a single pass. It will work if Windows Explorer is closed.
When copying files larger than 2 GB from some iSCSI/SAN volumes the copy operation may fill all available RAM and then stall out. This typically happens when the RAID virtual disk on the controller is set to write-through caching rather than write-back caching.
Copy utilities such as TeraCopy ($) and BITS will workaround this issue because they copy the file in larger blocks, however the cost of this is that copying smaller files may then be slower than using Robocopy. The /IPG option may help with this issue.
If the /FAT option is used to copy files into a directory containing existing files with long filenames, if any short filenames match between source and destination, those files will be replaced, as you would expect, but the files will retain their old long filenames even if they don’t match the long filenames of the source file.

Examples

Simple copy of all files from one folder to another:

ROBOCOPY \\Server1\reports \\Server2\backup

Copy Everything: all files, subfolders (even empty ones /E), NTFS ACL permissions, ownership, and file attributes. If this command is run repeatedly it will skip any files already in the destination, however this is not a true mirror as any files deleted from the source will remain in the destination. The *.* is optional as this is the default.

ROBOCOPY \\Server1\reports \\Server2\backup *.* /E /COPYALL

Copy all .jpg and .bmp files from one folder to another:

How to use Robocopy to copy files over the network fast

Using Robocopy over the network is a two-step process. You must first configure file sharing on the source device and then use Robocopy in the destination device to perform the transfer.

1. Confiture file sharing on Windows 10

To share files in the local network on Windows 10, use these steps:

Open File Explorer on Windows 10.
Navigate to the folder with the files to migrate.
Right-click the folder and select the Properties option.
On the “Properties” page, click the Sharing tab.
Click the Share button.
Use the drop-down menu to select the user or group to share files or folders – For example, the Everyone group.
Click the Add button.
Under “Permission Level,” select the sharing permissions you want the folder to have. For example, you can choose Read (default) if you only want users to view and open files. If you select Read/Write, users can view, open, modify, and delete the content in your shared folder.
Click the Share button.
Note the network path for the folder that other users will need to access the content over the network, and click the Done button.
Click the Close button.

After you complete the steps, make a note of the folder path and the IP address of your source computer.

Quick tip: You can quickly find your IP address on Settings > Network & Internet, click Wi-Fi or Ethernet, and click the connection to view the information.

2. Use Robocopy to copy files on Windows 10 fast over the network

Once file sharing is configured on the source device, you can copy the files using Robocopy from the destination device.

To use Robocopy to copy files fast on Windows 10, use these steps:

Open Start.
Search for Command Prompt, right-click the top result, and select the Run as administrator option.

Type the following command to copy the files over the network and press Enter:

robocopy \\source-device-ip\path\to\share\folder C:\destination-device\path\to\store\files /E /Z /ZB /R:5 /W:5 /TBD /NP /V /MT:16

Command example:

robocopy \\10.1.2.111\Users\admin\Documents C:\Users\admin\Documents /E /Z /ZB /R:5 /W:5 /TBD /NP /V /MT:16

In the above command, change the source and destination paths with your configuration.

Robocopy command options breakdown

Robocopy has many features that you can use, and in the command shown in this guide, we’re using the following options to make the copy reliable and fast.

/S — Copy subdirectories, but not empty ones.
/E — Copy Subdirectories, including empty ones.
/Z — Copy files in restartable mode.
/ZB — Uses restartable mode. If access is denied, use backup mode.
/R:5 — Retry 5 times (you can specify a different number, the default is 1 million).
/W:5 — Wait 5 seconds before retrying (you can specify a different number, the default is 30 seconds).
/TBD — Wait for share names To Be Defined (retry error 67).
/NP — No Progress – don’t display percentage copied.
/V — Produce verbose output, showing skipped files.
/MT:16 — Do multithreaded copies with n threads (default is 8).

Perhaps the most important switch to pay attention to is /MT, an option that enables Robocopy to copy files in multithreaded mode. Typically, when you copy files from File Explorer, you only copy one file at a time. However, with multithreaded enabled, you can copy multiple files simultaneously, better utilizing the bandwidth and significantly speeding up the process.

If you do not set a number when using the “/MT” switch, then the default number will be “8,” which means that Robocopy will try to copy eight files at the same time, but the tool supports “1” to “128” threads.

In the command shown in this guide, we use “16,” but you can set it to a higher number. The only caveat is that more processing power and bandwidth will be used when using higher numbers. If you have an older processor and an unreliable network connection, it could cause issues. As such, test the command before executing the command with a high number of threads.

You can always view all the available switches, run the robocopy /? command.

Windows 10 Cortana 'fix' breaks the internet

Windows 10 has run into more trouble at the hands of the KB4515384 update, which is, by all accounts, breaking far more than it fixes, with the latest victim reportedly being networking functionality.

As we’ve already seen, this particular patch was designed to fix a problem with the May 2019 Update whereby Cortana and search were spiking CPU usage, a nasty gremlin, but while KB4515384 solved this, at the same time it broke search in both the Start menu and Taskbar.

Not only that, the update also caused sound issues (Microsoft notes that “audio in certain games is quieter or different than expected after installing this update”), and now it would appear, networking problems.

The latest gremlin has been highlighted by Windows Latest which cites reports on Reddit and Microsoft’s own Answers.com forum, as well as feedback submitted to Microsoft via the Windows 10 feedback hub

One user submitted feedback to the effect that: “Cumulative update (KB4515384) causes the NIC [network interface card] to fail to enable with a code 10 error. Reinstalling network drivers from Intel or Windows Update sources does not resolve the issue.” However, uninstalling patch KB4515384 causes the problem to go away, the user observes.

Another user on Reddit notes: “KB4515384 broke my Intel NIC. It kept reporting ‘disconnected’. I downloaded the Intel 24.0.0.11 drivers, and did a fresh install, but no luck ... still disabled. I uninstalled the kb, and I’m back in business. I’m running Intel driver 12.18.8.22 successfully pre-update, if that helps anyone. Now, I sit and wait and hope MS fixes!”

Other users then chime in saying the same thing has happened to them, and as mentioned, there’s also a ‘network adapter failure’ thread on Answers.com.

This problem appears to be affecting Intel network hardware (both Ethernet or wired connections, and Wi-Fi), and has hit at least two different brands of motherboard, with MSI and Gigabyte boards being mentioned in the above posts.

Obviously these are pretty frustrating issues, and users can try disabling and then re-enabling the network adapter in Device Manager, followed by rebooting their machine, to see if that might shift the problem. But it seems the only guaranteed solution here is to simply ditch the offending patch KB4515384, which isn’t a great workaround, seeing as that leaves you with other problems of course.

The original Cortana driving up processor usage issue was itself introduced by a previous cumulative update (KB4512941) for Windows 10 May 2019 Update.

Patience wearing thin

This is all beginning to sound like a real mess, isn’t it? And to rub further salt in the wound, Windows Latest also highlights potential issues with Action Center failing to open after the installation of KB4515384.

It would certainly seem to be a patch that causes far more trouble than it resolves for some, and unsurprisingly on some of these threads online, folks are clearly losing patience with Microsoft.

One Reddit poster complains: “Correct me if I’m (significantly) wrong, but it seems like every single time they’ve pushed out a major update since Windows 10 was released, they’ve broken something stupidly simple & often generally essential for basic usage ... and even now, four years later, I still can’t install Windows 10 if I don’t unplug every non-essential peripheral in the system beforehand – even if the drivers for them are pre-installed in Windows itself!”

Elsewhere in that large Reddit thread, more flak is fired at Microsoft, including the following shot: “Don’t blame Windows, blame company culture where features get people promotions but not bug fixing and optimizations. Same thing happens at Google frequently.”

Hopefully we’ll get some acknowledgement from Microsoft about these fresh problems (and maybe an incoming cure) before long.

Step 1. Connect the destination USB flash drive to the computer with an installed copy of WinToHDD.

Step 2. Run WinToHDD, then click the button.

Step 3. Select the USB drive in the drop-down list. If your USB drive is not correctly recognized by WinToHDD, you need to click the button for the program to recognize the USB drive. After you select the USB drive, a pop-up will appear asking you if you want to format it to continue.

Step 4. Click "Yes". After clicking "Yes", WinToHDD begins formatting. Please wait until that format operation is complete.

Tips: If you have formatted the wrong USB drive, you can use our Free Data Recovery Software Hasleo Data Recovery to recover your lost files.

Step 5. After successfully formated the USB drive, click "Next", WinToHDD begins creating the Windows installation USB drive.

Step 6. It will take some time to create the multiple Windows installation USB drive. After the creation is completed, you can copy any number of Windows installation ISO to the destination USB flash drive, as long as the USB drive is large enough, then unplug the USB drive.

Step 7. Connect the multiple installation USB flash drive to the computer which you want to intall Windows. Power on the computer, and change BIOS to boot from the USB drive.

Step 8. If the computer is 64-bit, please run "WinToHDD (64-bit)", otherwise run "WinToHDD (32-bit)".

Step 9. The computer will boot into Windows PE environment and automatically run WinToHDD. Click the button.

For example, according to Deloitte, flexible consumption models (also known as pay-per-use models) are going become increasingly more popular across all industries as new customer data becomes available.

2. Machine learning

Another exciting emerging technology is machine learning, which is essentially a computer’s ability to learn on its own by analyzing data and tracking repeating patterns. For example, social media platforms use machine learning to get a better understanding of how you’re connected with those in your social network. How it’s affecting industries: In addition to shaping your day-to-day interactions with friends on social media, machine learning is also changing the way companies do business with customers. According to Deloitte, companies like Google are using machine learning on mobile devices which can continue learning even when offline. The result? Machine learning is reshaping the way businesses interact with their customers in a big way by helping them anticipate and meet customer needs more easily.

3. Virtual reality (VR)

Remember watching movies about virtual reality and thinking how cool it would be if it was actually like that in real life? Well, it’s about to be. Although VR has been around since the 1950s, until recently the technology wasn’t able to deliver the fully immersive digital experience users have been craving. That’s about to change with recent improvements to both hardware and programming, and the effects are going to be felt across almost every industry from retail to education.

How it’s affecting industries: Virtual reality has been a popular component of video games for several years and this trend is continuing to expand. In addition to video games, VR is likely to affect companies across the board as they adopt the technology to help them engage customers more effectively and optimize their sales and marketing efforts. 4. Touch commerce

After linking their payment information to a general account and enabling the feature, customers are able to buy everything from clothes to furniture with just a fingerprint.

How it’s affecting industries: According to Deloitte, this is one of the biggest things to hit eCommerce in recent years with purchases of this type expected to increase by 150% this year alone and retailers in almost every industry anticipating an increase in sales directly related to this new technology.

5. Cognitive Technology

Cognitive technology is in the same vein as machine learning and virtual reality except that it’s a broader concept. For example, the cognitive technology umbrella includes things like natural language processing (NLP) and speech recognition. Combined, these different technologies are able to automate and optimize a lot of tasks that were previously done by people, including certain aspects of accounting and analytics.

How it’s affecting industries: Although cognitive technologies have a broad range of applications, Deloitte predicts that the industry sector most affected by this trend initially will be the software sector with 95% of enterprise software companies projected to adopt these technologies by 2020.

While Microsoft had the performance edge over last year's MacBook Pro, with the Surface Book 2, Apple has come out swinging with some seriously beefed up specs for the 13-inch MacBook Pro 2018, and even more so if you go for the larger 15-inch model. The headline Touch Bar – a thin OLED display at the top of the keyboard which can be used for any number of things, whether that be auto-suggesting words as you type or offering Touch ID so you can log in with just your fingerprint – is again included. It's certainly retained Apple's sense of style, but it comes at a cost. This is a pricey machine, so you may want to consider one of the Windows alternatives. If you're open to switching to a PC, definitely consider the XPS 13 or the excellent MateBook X Pro. But, if you're a steadfast Apple diehard, this is definitely the best laptop for you!

Billed as "modern vintage meets technology", the HP Spectre Folio is built directly into a piece of genuine leather. That's not a fancy cover, it's a part of the laptop. It's not just looks that has put it on this list of the best laptops of 2019, the HP Spectre Folio is also a brilliant performer as well, with modern components powering the device. It is very expensive, though, so if you're on a budget, check out the more affordable 2-in-1 Acer Switch 3 below. But, if you want the best laptop for making a statement as soon as you pull it out of the bag, then the HP Spectre Folio is the one to get.

It's designed around essentially the same concept as the Surface Book 2 and it's a less capable thanks to slightly lower power innards, but for most tasks it's a brilliant little machine. What's more, to add further value this 2-in-1 laptop/tablet comes with the keyboard upgrade which means no little extras to pay for. As usual it comes in several different versions, with USB Type-C, 8GB RAM, an IPS display and Intel Core i3 7100U CPU coming with the more expensive option.

Apple has updated the processors with Intel's 7th-generation Kaby Lake range, which means you get improved performance and longer battery life without sacrificing the thin and light design that the MacBook is famous for. While the MacBook 2017 is not designed as a pure productivity machine, like the more powerful and versatile MacBook Pro above, or as a gaming machine like the Asus ROG Zephyrus GX501, it's still one of the best laptops in the world right now thanks to being a super slim and light MacBook that you can take anywhere without even noticing the weight, and being a powerful showcase for macOS High Sierra. If you're after a MacBook, this year's model is easily one of the best.

It features a pair of Thunderbolt 3 ports for accessories and super fast file transfers, a hinge that flips inside out for watching movies on planes and a taste of Android. You get full access to the Google Play store on the Pixelbook, from playing Sonic the Hedgehog to watching videos in VLC. The icing on this pixelated cake is its long battery life – it lasted nearly 8 hours in our own testing, so you shouldn’t need to worry about the Pixelbook dying on you.

While you may have been convinced that ‘budget Ultrabook’ was an oxymoron up until this point, the Acer has turned this common misconception on its head with the Swift 3. That’s because the company has taken the all-aluminum chassis of the Acer Swift 7 and stuffed some more affordable components inside for everyone to enjoy. It doesn’t run macOS, but the Acer Swift 3 does put the age-old MacBook Air to shame in about every other regard, including the nigh-unbeatable price tag. Of course, in the process of demolishing the competition, Acer did have to cut a few corners in order to keep the price so impressively low. So although you can’t expect much in the way of an Ultra HD display or quality onboard sound, the performance benchmarks alone give even the Surface Laptop a run for its money.

We've also had a glance of the upcoming 2018 edition of the Swift 7 at CES 2018, which comes with boosted graphics and processing specs. It could be a shoe-in for a place on this list when it launches later this year.

The cybercriminals behind the GozNym malware, which stole over $100m from bank accounts since its creation, have been apprehended as a result of a joint operation between Europol and the US Justice Department.

During a press conference in The Hague, prosecutors said that 10 defendants in five countries have been accused of using malware to steal money from over 41,000 victims consisting mostly of businesses and financial institutions.

Of the 10 defendants, five were arrested in Moldova, Bulgaria, Ukraine and Russia while the leader of the group behind the GozNym malware and his technical assistant are begin prosecuted in Georgia. The remaining five defendants, who are all Russian nationals, are still on the run though they are currently wanted by the FBI..

GozNym malware

GozNym was developed by combining the Nymaim and Gozi malware families into one powerful banking malware that spread across the US, Canada, Germany and Poland. Since it first appeared in 2016, the banking malware has been used to target dozens of banks and credit unions.

GozNym has been described as malware as a service and the leader of the network obtained the code for the two malware families after it leaked online and used it to build his own more powerful malware strain. He then recruited other cybercriminals to join his operation while advertising the new malware on Russian speaking forums.

The malware used encryption and other techniques to avoid detection by antivirus tools while the cybercriminals sent out hundreds of thousands of phishing emails to businesses and banks in an attempt to gain access to their computer systems. Once a system was infected, the malware would steal passwords for bank accounts that the cybercriminals would log into and cash out.

According to the prosecutors, the GozNym malware network was hosted and operated through a bulletproof hosting service known for having lenient attitudes towards cybercrime.

How to boot from USB in VMware Workstation ( UEFI mode )

If you use plpbt.iso, you can only boot USB in Legacy BIOS mode. This article will guide you to boot from USB in VMware Workstation in UEFI mode. I’m not sure if previous versions could use a physical disk as a virtual disk in VMware. But with VMware Workstation 15, 14, you can do that. This release also provides the Secure Boot feature which I will use it to guide you on how to boot Grub2 with Secure Boot enabled.

Booting from USB in VMware Workstation is easy, but while booting, your USB will be locked and you can not use it. Unlike boot from USB in VirtualBox, VMware allows you to write data to USB. All data read and written to USB during boot will be saved.

We will go through two simple steps:

Create a new virtual machine

You can easily create new VMs in VMware Workstation through the steps below. Ignore if you already know how to create.

Click File, select New Virtual Machine…
Select Typical (recommended) and click Next.
Select I will install the operating system later. and click Next.
In the Guest operating system and Version, select the appropriate item for you. Here I choose Windows 10 x64.
Next at the Name the Virtual Machine window, select the Virtual Machine Name and Location and click Next to continue. I will keep the default.
In the Specify Disk Capacity window, enter the maximum size for the virtual hard disk you want to create. I will enter the smallest size is 0.001 because I will not use it.
Click Finish, you now have a new virtual machine.

Add USB to virtual machine

After we create a new virtual machine, we will now add USB as the VMware Virtual Hard Disk.

Select the virtual machine name in the left pane, then select Edit virtual machine settings.
In the Virtual Machine Settings window, if you do not use the virtual disk you created earlier, you can select it and click the Remove button to delete it.
Click the Add… button, under Hardware types, select Hard Disk to add a new Hard Disk. Click Next.
Select SCSI (Recommended) as recommended by VMware and click Next. You can select another item that is suitable for your use.
In the Select a Disk window, select Use a physical disk (for advanced users) and click Next.
In the Select a Physical Disk window, select your physical disk in the Device, it can be USB or HDD. Select Use entire disk in the Usage section to use Disk whole (all partitions on disk) or Use individual partitions to select the partitions you want. Click Next to continue.

How to identify the physical disk name in the Device section? Just open Disk Management and see the corresponding disk number.
In the Specify Disk File window, select the name and location where you want to save the disk file. Click Finish to finish, click OK to close the Virtual Machine Settings window.

Ok now you can boot from USB in VMware Workstation by click the Power on this virtual machine button.

If you encounter this error, just quit all applications running on this disk and are using this disk.

One of the disks in this virtual machine is already in use by a virtual machine or snapshot.

You can choose to use UEFI or BIOS mode in Virtual Machine Settings. Select Enable secure boot to enable Secure Boot.

OpenAI’s Dota 2 AI steamrolls world champion e-sports team with back-to-back victories

OpenAI, the AI research organization, can claim a world first: its artificial intelligence system trained to play the complex strategy game Dota 2 has bested a world champion e-sports team. The competition was held in San Francisco today and dubbed the OpenAI Five Finals, ending the organization’s public demonstrations of its Dota-playing technology on a high note.

The competition on the human side included five top Dota 2 pros from team OG, which won the world’s most coveted e-sports prize last year when it took the No. 1 spot at The International, the premiere annual Dota 2 tournament with prizes now totaling $25 million. OG faced off in a best-of-three contest against the OpenAI Five bots, all trained using the same deep reinforcement learning techniques and controlled independently by different layers of the same system. Reinforcement learning is effectively a trial and error approach to self-improvement, wherein the AI is dropped into the game environment with zero understanding of how the game works and trained extensively using reward systems and other incentivizing mechanisms.

Today’s performance is by far the highest-quality demonstration of OpenAI Five’s capabilities to date, with the system having narrowly lost two games to less capable e-sports teams last August. According to OpenAI co-founder and chairman Greg Brockman, who is also the organization’s chief technology officer, OpenAI Five improves by playing itself in an accelerated virtual environment. “OpenAI Five is powered by deep reinforce learning, which means we didn’t code it how to play. We coded it how to learn,” Brockman told the crowd ahead of the competition. “In its 10 months of existence, it’s already played 45,000 years of Dota 2 gameplay. That’s a lot — it hasn’t grown bored yet.”

Dota 2 is a vastly complex strategy game, involving more than 100 unique characters, deep skill trees and item lists, and a dizzying array of variables playing out onscreen at any given moment in a match. As such, OpenAI imposes certain limits when its AI system plays professional players, most prominently by capping the number of heroes used by both five-player teams.

In this case, each squad had 17 heroes to choose from. OpenAI also chose the so-called “Captain’s Draft” game mode, which lets each team strategically ban heroes to prevent the other team from selecting those characters before using a distinct picking order. That lets the captain build off strengths between hero combinations and leverage enemy hero weaknesses through strong counters once the teams do begin filling out the roster one by one. Like prior matches, OpenAI also disabled summoning and illusion features, both of which involve bringing on additional variables in the form of hero copies and unique creatures that OpenAI hasn’t trained its system to account for.

Beyond that, the game is played just like a normal Dota 2 match, with the ultimate goal of destroying the enemy team’s “ancient,” or a large tower at the end of each team’s territory that becomes vulnerable only when the enemy team successfully destroy smaller towers throughout the course of the match, in between hero-on-hero team fights.

In the first match of the day, OpenAI Five surprised OG and claimed victory through reliance on a number of aggressive tactics, including the peculiar decision to spend earned in-game currency to instantly revive heroes upon death, even early on in the match. As noted by Greg Brockman, OpenAI’s chief technology officer, OpenAI is fond of strategies that favor short-term gain, revealing its deficiencies in mastering the type of long-term planning humans are great at and typically rely on to win such strategy contests. However, in this match, the early buy backs paid off and OpenAI Five gained an edge that OG simply could not overcome as the match dragged on into the 30-minute range.

For OpenAI, the victory here is not just a cause of celebration in and of itself, but a testament that its approach to reinforcement learning and its general philosophy about AI is yielding milestones. The research team will no longer hold any public demonstrations of its AI bot, but its now working on software that will let humans collaborate alongside the OpenAI Five software in real time, playing on a team with the bots and learning from their peculiar, unprecedented strategies and behaviors. The organization is also releasing a platform for the public to play against OpenAI Five, a mode it’s calling Arena, that will be open for three days starting April 18th.

OpenAI says that the collaboration software may not ever make it to the public, although I was able to try it for myself here at the event. (Despite having world-class Dota 2 AI on my team, I unfortunately was crushed in much less dramatic fashion than OG.) But Sam Altman, co-founder and CEO of OpenAI, says this type of work is evidence that collaboration with AI agents could result in huge benefits in the future.

“That’s an important lesson for how the world is going to work, training these things and have them work in parallel, Altman says in an interview with The Verge. “Collaboration is one of the more positive visions we have for the future of the world — AI works alongside humans to make humans better and have more fun and more impact.”

Altman says OpenAI will likely continue to dabble with Dota 2 and other video game environments, primarily because they are such good test beds for AI and good benchmarking tools for measuring progress. But he tells me there probably does not exist a video game out there right now that a system like OpenAI Five can’t eventually master at a level beyond human capability. For the broader AI industry, mastering video games may soon become passé, simple table stakes required to prove your system can learn fast and act in a way required to tackle tougher, real-world tasks with more meaningful benefits.

Ultimately, OpenAI wants to take its Dota 2 learnings and expand them to new domains outside games and, eventually, into the real world. To that end, the organization is working on using reinforcement learning and other techniques to imbue robotic hands with more deft, dexterous, and humanlike movement.

“What OpenAI is trying to do is build general artificial intelligence and to share those benefits with the world and make sure it’s safe,” Altman says, referring to the quest to build a multi-purpose AI system capable of performing any task a human can. “Were not here to beat video games, as fun as that is. We’re here to uncover secrets along the path the AGI.”

Basics of Computer Networking

Open system:
A system which is connected to the network and is ready for communication.

Closed system:
A system which is not connected to the network and can’t be communicated with.

Computer Network:
It is the interconnection of multiple devices, generally termed as Hosts connected using multiple paths for the purpose of sending/receiving data or media.
There are also multiple devices or mediums which helps in the communication between two different devices which are known as Network devices. Ex: Router, Switch, Hub, Bridge.

The layout pattern using which devices are interconnected is called as network topology. Such as Bus, Star, Mesh, Ring, Daisy chain.

OSI:
OSI stands for Open Systems Interconnection. It is a reference model that specifies standards for communications protocols and also the functionalities of each layer.

Protocol:
Protocol is the set of rules or algorthims which define the way how two entities can communicate across the network and there exists different protocol defined at each layer of OSI model. Few of such protocols are TCP, IP, UDP, ARP, DHCP, FTP and so on.

UNIQUE IDENTIFIERS OF NETWORK
Host name:
Each device in the network is associated with a unique device name known as Hostname.
Type “hostname” in the command prompt and press ‘Enter’, this displays the hostname of your machine.

IP Address (Internet Protocol address):
Also know as Logical Address, is the network address of the system across the network.
To identify each device in the world-wide web, Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA) assigns IPV4 (Version 4) address as unique identifier for each device on the Internet.
Length of the IP address is : 32-bits. (Hence we have 232 ip addresses available.)
Type “ipconfig” in the command prompt and press ‘Enter’, this gives us the IP address of the device.

MAC Address (Media Access Control address):
Also known as physical address, is the unique identifier of each host and is associated with the NIC (Network Interface Card).
MAC address is assigned to the NIC at the time of manufacturing.
Length of the MAC address is : 12-nibble/ 6 bytes/ 48 bits
Type “ipconfig/all” in the command prompt and press ‘Enter’, this gives us the MAC address.

Port:
Port can be referred as logical channel through which data can be sent/received to an application. Any host may have multiple applications running, and each of this application is identified using the port number on which they are running on.
Port number is a 16-bit integer, hence we have 216 ports available which are categorized as shown below:

Few more concepts
DNS Server:
DNS stands for Domain Name system.
DNS is basically a server which translate web addresses or URL (ex: www.google.com) into their corresponding IP addresses. We don’t have to remember all the IP addresses of each and every website.
The command ‘nslookup’ gives you the IP address of the domain you are looking for. This also provides the information of our DNS Server.

ARP:
ARP stands for Address Resolution Protocol.
It is used to convert the IP address to its corresponding Physical Address(i.e.MAC Address).
ARP is used by the Data Link Layer to identify the MAC address of the Receiver’s machine.
RARP:
RARP stands for Reverse Address Resolution Protocol.
As the name suggest, it provides the IP address of the a device given physical address as input. But RARP has become obsolete since the time DHCP has come into picture.

How to install OS through Network boot

Boot from LAN is really useful if you have lots of computers. This article will guide you how to install OS through Network boot.

Introduction

Since the early versions of AIO Boot, this tool has supported booting from the LAN. It supports you to do a lot of work such as installing OS, running tools to Ghost, managing partitions, backup and recovery.

You just need a computer to replace the other bootable devices like USB, HDD and DVD… Of course, clients need to have a local area network connection with the server and have network boot support. If you boot from USB, boot loader and operating systems will use the files on USB. If you boot from the LAN, the boot loader and operating systems will download the necessary files from the LAN. The advantage of network booting is that you will not need to attach boot devices to clients (except cables). If the data transfer rate in your LAN is slower than the read/write speed of boot devices such as USB, HDD or DVD, the speed is the downside of this method.

AIO Boot supports Windows installation from network boot. You can install Windows by integrating ISO and using the Windows Installer or booting into WinPE and installing Windows manually. Most Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Debian, Linux Mint, Arch Linux are also supported.

Configure PXE server

To boot from LAN, you need to have a PXE server, a DHCP server, and a server to share files. You just need a computer to do all this.

AIO Boot uses Tiny PXE Server to create PXE server and DHCP server. Run AIOCreator.exe, select Run PXE and select mode to run Tiny PXE Server.

AIO Boot uses iPXE as boot loader, which supports both legacy BIOS and UEFI (32-bit and 64-bit) modes.

Tiny PXE Server will run and be preconfigured.

If the configuration is not correct, reconfigure it.

Option 54 (DHCP Server): The IP address of the computer running Tiny PXE Server. This list contains the IP addresses of network adapters (including VirtualBox and VMware). You need to select the correct IP address in the same local area network of the clients.
Filename: Boot file of iPXE, you can choose another boot file in the /AIO folder if the current file does not work on the client.

Legacy: undionly.kpxe, undionly.kkpxe, ipxe.pxe and intel.pxe.
UEFI 64-bit: ipxe64.efi, snponly64.efi and intel64.efi.
UEFI 32-bit: ipxe32.efi, snponly32.efi and intel32.efi.

After reconfiguring, click the Offline and Online buttons for the changes to take effect.

For Linux distributions like Ubuntu, Debian, I use FreeNFS to create NFS servers. You do not need any further configuration.

If the files you need are already on the client, just use it. But if the files are not on the client computer, of course you need to get it from another computer. You can download it from the Internet but the speed will be much slower than the local area network.

First, copy all the necessary files to a folder and then share it. Or share a drive. See the Guide to Share a Folder or Drive from Microsoft.

Here are the steps I share the AIO Boot drive:

Right-click on the AIO Boot drive and select Properties.
Switch to the Sharing tab.
Select Advanced Sharing…
Check the Share this folder box.
Enter a name for the Share name.
Click OK.
The Network Path is what I need to get, here is \\Whoami\g.

Install Windows

Since AIO Boot v0.9.7.5, you can install Windows from network boot using the Windows Installer. Here are step by step:

Run AIOCreator.exe and integrate Windows ISO file into AIO Boot. Only support Windows 7, 8, 8.1, Windows 10, does not support Windows XP.
Share AIO Boot Drive.
Run PXE and boot into PXE on clients.
This is the iPXE menu of AIO Boot. Access the WinPE & Setup menu and boot into the Windows menu that you integrated in step 1.
Enter the Network Path you shared in step 2 when asked. You can enter Network Path|Username|Password if the server has Username and Password. For Windows 8, 8.1, and Windows 10, if you use a Microsoft account to sign in, it is also your computer’s username and password.

Enter the username and password that you used to share the AIO Boot drive. Or you can Turn off password protected sharing. The password is not displayed when you type it at the password prompt.
If the information is correct, the Windows Installer will appear. You can then install Windows from Network boot using the same steps as using a USB or DVD.

If the program reports that the Network Path is incorrect, it may be due to several other reasons:

Windows 7 may not support your network drivers. Try Windows 10 or Windows 8.1.
Connection blocked by Firewall, try disabling it. My connection is blocked by Bitdefender, I disabled the firewall in Bitdefender and everything works.

If you only use a single computer to initialize the PXE server, you only need to enter the Network Path once. AIO Boot v0.9.8.7 supports reading Network Path from /AIO/networkpath.txt. Just add the Network Path to this file, you can add multiple Network Paths by adding multiple lines. The tool will try one by one.

\\yourcomputername\sharename

If your computer has an account and password, add them behind the Network Path separated by a vertical bar (“|”).

\\yourcomputername\sharename|youraccount|yourpassword

If you then initialize the PXE server on another computer, this means that the Network Path, user name, and password have changed. Just enter the new information in /AIO/networkpath.txt.

The above steps will help you to install Windows easily. There is another method that you can use for many other purposes. That’s using WinPE. See instructions for installing Windows from WinPE for more details.

Download WinPE and integrate it into the AIO Boot as instructed in the Readme.txt file.
Boot into WinPE from network boot.
Use the net use command to connect to the drive or folder you have shared. Here I will attach the Network Path to the Z: drive.

Now you can mount Windows ISO files or use the dism command to install Windows. From WinPE, you can run diskpart command to partition before installation. Or run the tools from the folder you have shared, or Ghost…

How to Transfer Files Between Your PC and Android Phone Wirelessly

What You’ll Need

Before we go into the details, you need to install several applications on your Android phone:

ES File Explorer is an excellent file manager for Android. It comes with a built in search function, image viewer, and most importantly a LAN browser that we’ll use to transfer files to our computer through Wifi.
swiFTP is a lightweight FTP server that lets you transfer multiple files from Windows, Linux, or Mac through a secure FTP connection.

Both of them are available for free from the market, and they both worked in our HTC Desire HD when we tested them in our rooted and non-rooted phone.

Enabling FTP Access to Your Phone

Once installed, swiFTP is available from the application screen.

Upon launch, swiFTP prompts you for a user name and a password.

Now you can turn your phone into an FTP server by tapping the start button, and we can establish an FTP connection to your phone.

You should see an IP address when you run swiFTP. Take note of the IP address and the port, you will need this information to establish an FTP connection to your Android.

Uploading Files to Android

For convenience, lets create a shortcut to our Android phone in our Windows Explorer. Open the “Computer” folder to map your android phone in Windows file explorer.

Enter the IP address of your phone.

Enter the user name that we specify in swiFTP, and click next to proceed.

Enter an appropriate name for the connection.

Now every time you need to access your phone, just double click the FTP shortcut to your phone, enter your FTP password, and you’ll have access to all your files in your phone.

Transfer Files to Your PC

We’ve learned how to get files in and out from your phone through FTP, now we’ll show you transfer files directly into a shared folder in your computer with ES File explorer. Read our article on how to share folders, if you’re not familiar with sharing folders on a local network.

To begin, launch ES File explorer from the application screen. ES File explorer consists of three tabs: a local tab that displays all the files in our phone, a LAN tab that displays all the devices on your local network, and an FTP tab that displays any FTP server on your network. Tap the menu button to bring up ES File Explorer menu, and tap the new button.

Scanning the network saves you from having to specify your computer IP address manually. Your phone will search for any accessible devices on your local network, and displays them under the LAN tab.

You should see all accessible shared folders on your local network.

Go back to the Local tab, and copy the files that you want to upload to your computer.

Copy as many files as you want and ES File Explorer will group these files in its clipboard area.

Go back to the LAN tab, tap the clipboard, and you should see all the files that you just copied.

Tap your menu button to bring up ES File Explorer’s Context Menu.

Tap Operation, follow by paste, and ES File Explorer will upload all these files to your computer.

Sync Files through the Cloud

So far we’ve learned how to transfer files between your Android and your PC through WiFi. That’s great, but what if your WiFi is out of range ? No Problem, just use DropBox to sync your files over the Internet. You can read our guide to DropBox if you’re not familiar with this cool cloud-based service.

DropBox is an awesome application for sharing your files with all your computers and devices that you can use for almost anything. We use DropBox to sync files in our iPhone and iPod touch, print important files over the internet, and trigger torrent downloads when we’re away from our home computer. Whatever your need is, there is always a hack to appropriate DropBox in any way you like it.

The top cybersecurity risks by industry for 2019

Here’s a look at some of the biggest cybercrime trends in four different industries and how you can prepare for them.

1. Education

Last year, a few distinct patterns of attack contributed to the majority of data breaches in the education sector, according to the Verizon Data Breach Investigations Report. These vectors included social engineering, web application attacks, and human error.

In particular, social engineering attacks against educational institutions saw a big increase. The W-2 scam, for instance, hammered educational organizations with spoofed email requests to HR and payroll asking for the release of employee W-2 forms. The hackers using this technique aimed to use the information within those forms to steal identities and evade taxes.

Schools are particularly vulnerable to social engineering, because they’re forthcoming with information about their employees. Many institutions publish the full names and contact information of staff online, which makes reconnaissance activity for a clever phishing attack easy. The best way to avoid these attacks is to double down on training employees to detect suspicious emails.

While you’re at it, reinforce the need to keep software and digital textbooks up to date to avoid web application attacks targeting students. As schools adopt more tech for digital learning, the FBI has warned about the emerging data security risks. Education IT teams must take steps to mitigate those risks and limit what programs can run on students’ devices.

2. Healthcare

Healthcare is the only industry where employees are more likely to cause security incidents than hackers, according to DBIR data. Fifty-six percent of incidents last year were caused by internal actor error or data misuse, compared to 43 percent attributed to external actors. The second most common threat was malware, particularly ransomware, which accounts for 85 percent of malware attacks in healthcare.

Why are healthcare employees so likely to leak data? It probably isn’t malicious intent. These cybersecurity risks are more likely caused by the growing role of data in healthcare, alongside strict regulatory requirements, such as HIPAA and HITECH.

Privilege misuse, like “I’m just using Bob’s credentials to log into that database” or accidentally emailing a file to the wrong person, can have a particularly nasty impact on data security in healthcare. In addition to educating employees about the importance of adhering to compliance rules, you can put some safeguards in place that prevent data leakage, such as requiring authentication to collect sensitive print jobs.

3. Retail

If you can count on hackers to do anything, it’s to follow the money—and retail has a lot of moving money. Trends in retail business security threats confirm that threat actors are focused on taking down e-commerce websites, as well as skimming customer card data from brick-and-mortar retail stores.

DBIR data shows that 75 percent of all attacks against retail organizations follow three dominant vectors:

Distributed denial-of-service, or DDoS, attacks
Payment card skimming
Web application attacks

As more retailers go digital, the threat vectors targeting websites are worth noting. DDoS threats can take a costly toll on e-commerce profits. Meanwhile, input validation weaknesses, like OS commanding and SQLI, are frequently used as web application attacks that allow hackers to steal customer payment card data in real time. DDoS mitigation plans and web application safeguards aren’t optional for retailers with a web presence.

Additionally, the old-fashioned point-of-sale skimmer is alive and well. IT professionals in retail must take steps to ensure endpoint security across all devices is locked down in each store location.

4. Finance

It probably doesn’t come as a surprise that a large proportion of profit-motivated hackers are continuing to target the financial sector. Last year, organizations in finance and banking faced nearly 40,000 distinct examples of Trojan botnets. This is a worrisome trend, especially considering that DDoS attacks have also grown dramatically in size and frequency in recent months. There’s a clear need for web application specialists in finance to plan for and prevent these attacks.

Banks also face physical tampering risks, such as payment card skimmers installed on ATMs. Recently, a new threat called ATM jackpotting has used malware and specialized electronics to cause ATMs to uncontrollably spit money at a hacker. Even as you work to protect against sophisticated digital attacks, don’t forget to protect your easily overlooked endpoints, as well.

Quantum Cryptography Demystified: How It Works

We’ve already covered the basics of quantum computing in our article on How Does Quantum Computing Work, so now it’s time to dive into one of its most publicized applications: quantum cryptography. Quantum cryptography holds both promises and threats for our current cryptographic infrastructure. The most obvious threat is quantum computers could decrypt data that’s been encrypted using many of our current systems. But it also holds the promise of secure communications channels for key distribution. Eventually, using quantum technology, it may even be possible to build entire encryption systems that are considered unbreakable.

Quantum Computing Decryption: Looming Crisis Or Another Y2K Blind Panic?

Almost all widely used encryption systems rely on keys — typically large, random, numbers that can be used to encrypt or decrypt data. Current encryption packages are most often built using either symmetric or asymmetric keys — many using asymmetric keys to transmit a shared, symmetric key for doing the actual data encryption. Both types of keys would be vulnerable to hacking using quantum computers. Symmetric systems rely on a shared secret key, and cracking the key requires about double the computing work for each additional bit. With that kind of scaling, it’s been possible to keep using larger keys as computers get more powerful. However, by implementing Grover’s algorithm, quantum computers can essentially cut the key length in half — a nearly inconceivable reduction in the amount of time required to crack a key. The good news is that now that we’re aware of the challenge, doubling the key lengths in use should be an excellent defense.

Asymmetric systems (like Public Key Infrastructure — PKI) use public/private key pairs that are mathematically generated. In the case of the widely-used RSA family of algorithms, the math is fairly complex. But it’s possible to crack if you can factor a very large number into its two prime number factors. If a key with enough bits is used, this is a nearly intractable problem for conventional computers, but quantum computers can use something called Shor’s algorithm to find the factors much more quickly. A rough estimate of the compute power needed is two qubits per bit length of the key. So a 1,024-bit key would require a quantum computer with 2,048 bits. Experts expect those to be possible within a decade, and some think sooner. Note that today 1,024-bit keys are already considered potentially unsafe, as they can be cracked given enough time on a large computer, but once a quantum computer can handle the task it will take very little time.

Much like the situation with the software migration required by Y2K, there are other encryption techniques that aren’t easily cracked with quantum computers. Examples of (non-quantum) encryption systems resistant to quantum attacks include McEliece and NTRUEncrypt. That means the problem is migrating the large number of systems and data already in place to newer ones. Also, like Y2K, it remains to be seen how real, and how widespread, the threat will be, as sufficiently large quantum computers will be expensive when they are finally available. That means they’re unlikely to get used for trying to hack information unless it’s considered extremely valuable. To run all of Shor’s algorithm, a quantum computer also needs to be paired with a powerful conventional computer, which will drive the cost of a key cracking system up even further.

Secure Communications Using Quantum Key Distribution

When you hear the term quantum cryptography, more often than not what is being referred to is Quantum Key Distribution (QKD). QKD doesn’t actually encrypt user data but makes it possible for users to securely distribute keys to each other, which can then be used for subsequent encrypted communication.

Whatever encryption system is used, there is almost always some type of private information that must be kept secret. For symmetric key systems, it is shared information in the form of a key, while in asymmetric systems each node has its own secret key while sharing a matching public key. In both cases, there are vulnerabilities when initializing communication. Symmetric key systems often rely on physical sharing of keys — some financial institutions use actual couriers with portable storage devices — to bootstrap. Or they may rely on a connection secured using an asymmetric system to share the encryption key needed for subsequent use. One reason for that is asymmetric systems like Public Key don’t require sending the secret (in this case private keys) over the channel, while symmetric systems are more efficient, and often more secure, for large volumes of data once keys have been exchanged.

While QKD isn’t in widespread use, it has been in commercial use in Europe since 2007, and in the US since 2010. For high-value transactions like inter-bank communication and election result transmission, the benefits of QKD are sometimes worth the cost. Another impediment to the wider adoption of QKD is that current systems aren’t interoperable between different vendors. Fortunately, that’s starting to change. In a research effort directed at finding ways to secure the power grid, teams at Oak Ridge and Los Alamos National Laboratories have demonstrated the first successful use of QKD between different implementations. The University of Bristol has also just published research on doing something similar to help secure multi-vendor 5G wireless networks.

But What About True Quantum Cryptography?

While harder than QKD, it will eventually be possible to encrypt data using quantum computing techniques that are particularly resistant to eavesdropping and various other forms of hacking. The most popular approach currently is the Kak protocol. Essentially it’s a quantum version of the well-known double-lock algorithm, which allows two users to securely exchange data without sharing any keys.

The double-lock protocol is remarkably simple. We’ll use common convention, and assume Alice and Bob want to exchange information, without it being modified by an eavesdropper, Eve. They also want to know if anyone is successfully eavesdropping on their communication channel. To do this they trade locks in a three-step process.

In Kak’s protocol, Alice and Bob use encryption functions U_A and U_B as proxies for the physical locks of a traditional two-lock protocol.

As the first step, Alice locks her data (in the digital case, encrypts it using a secret key), and sends it to Bob. Bob, in turn, adds his lock (encrypting Alice’s already encrypted data with his own secret key), and sends it back to Alice. Alice removes her lock and sends the result back to Bob. Bob can then remove his lock, and read the original data.

This all works really nicely with physical locks and keys, but it’s a little more complex when digital encryption is involved. For the protocol to work, the encryption processes have to be commutative (because the encryptions are applied in the order Alice, Bob, but then Alice needs to be able to remove her encryption before Bob removes his). An example of one possible, and popular, encryption, is multiplying by a large number. So far, so good. But now imagine that Eve is listening. As the data goes back and forth, she will be able to see the data multiplied by Alice’s key, the data multiplied by both keys, and the data multiplied by Bob’s key. From that, she can compute the supposedly secret keys of Alice and Bob.

Subhash Kak proposed using certain quantum rotations as a way to create a version of the double-lock protocol that couldn’t be eavesdropped. The rotations he proposed could be applied in either order, but any attempt to listen in by reading out intermediate data would result in corrupted data. Other researchers have continued to evolve the protocol with features to make it even more tamper-resistant, but unlike QKD, there aren’t any commercial implementations yet. While it is going to require much more powerful quantum computers to make true quantum-based encryption a reality, researchers are getting closer.

Last fall, a team of Chinese researchers successfully used quantum-entangled photons to create and share one-time pads between a satellite and a ground station in Austria. Encryption using one-time pads is provably secure as long as the pad is not compromised, is random, is used only once, and is longer than the data being transmitted. Quantum technology helps with the first three of these, but its performance is still quite slow. Still, the team was able to encrypt, transmit, and decrypt over 2GB of data using their quantum system.

In the meantime, quantum computers can do one simple task that’s important for encryption quite well: They can generate truly random numbers. It’s unlikely ultra-expensive quantum computers will be deployed just for that purpose, but once they’re in use, it will be a useful capability.

Windows 10 is a very good operating system, but the October 2018 Update has left a bad taste in many users' mouths. It caused a multitude of problems, got pulled, and even after it was made available again, new issues surfaced. The April 2018 Update rolled out to users at lightning speed, but the October 2018 Update has only been installed on about 3 percent of systems to date. Ouch.

Microsoft has said previously that Windows 10 will be the "last version of Windows", but is it time to rethink that idea and give users an operating system that goes up to 11? Take a look and make up your own mind.

YouTuber Kamer Kaan Avdan, who has previously created concept videos for updated versions of Windows 95, Windows XP and Windows 7, among others, has released a brand new video showcasing his vision of Windows 11.
