Bruce Davidson

2011-05-01T13:37:00.000-07:00

Bruce Davidson, the Magnum photographer, will be in London next week signing copies of his big new retrospective book Outside / Inside. He will also have 2 new exhibitions going on, one at Somerset House and I can't remember where the other one is but I highly reccomend everybody goes because he is my favourite photographer and the best photographer. I will be attending all these events, as he is the man responsible for me picking up a camera and attempting photography. Well, him and Ed Van Der Elsken anyway. He is an old man now, and a complete legend in my world, I will be honoured to meet him at the book signing!

A beautiful song from the first Blur album in 1991. One of their best, still...

The Sky Lit Up

2010-07-14T07:42:00.000-07:00

I'm walking in the city tonight
I'm walking in the city at dark
Remembering, remember light
Thinking of nothing, and the shooting stars

And this world tonight is mine
A world to be remembered in
Think on a faded photograph
My hair longer than it's ever been

The sky lit up
The sky
My friend
The sky lit up
The sky my friend
And I'm lighter than I've ever been

I saw the trees crossing the moon
I saw the stars and heaven above
Shine on my own beautiful prayer
Shining on my own beautiful love

The sky lit up
The sky my friend
The sky lit up
I'm lighter than I've ever been

And I'm dancing with him
In this city and in this town
I don't care what he's thinking of
Just take the car, just take my hand

The sky lit up
The sky lit up
The sky lit up
The sky lit up

Few days ago, as i was walking home, i got to pet a Beautiful Majestic Owl ( yes it was alive and not taxidermy), i know it seems random as i live in a big city and it was day time, but instead on elaborating on the whys that produce this event, i am instead going to linger on the magical feeling that it left on me, just as if i was jennifer Connelly in Labyrinth.

Wait! I got Boots just like those!

Another Halloween outfit for J.B and i.

God, i do hope they NEVER make a remake of this movie!

Got to go, new adventures awaiting for me.

''I am angry, I am ill and I'm as ugly as sin..''

2010-06-03T00:17:00.000-07:00

One of my favourite songs, I was obsessed it at around 21, 22. It's based loosely around Kafka's The Metamorphosis and the Dosteyevsky short novel Notes From The Underground. I love it.

I am angry I am ill and I'm as ugly as sin
My irritability keeps me alive and kicking
I know the meaning of life, it doesn't help me a bit
I know beauty and I know a good thing when I see it

This is a song from under the floorboards
This is a song from where the wall is cracked
My force of habit, I am an insect
I have to confess I'm proud as hell of that fact

I know the highest and the best
I accord them all due respect
But the brightest jewel inside of me
Glows with pleasure at my own stupidity

I used to make phantoms I could later chase
Images of all that could be desired
Then I got tired of counting all of these blessings
And then I just got tired

Out of the blue and into the black

2010-05-25T15:37:00.000-07:00

I love this song so much - I first came across it whilst watching the amazing Dennis Hopper film 'Out Of The Blue' starring the fantastic Linda Manz (which you can't even get on DVD in this country, stupid). In that, the main theme is Neil Young performing this song, acoustically, like this....

That was the only version I knew for ages, but then I realised that the original was not like that at all, it was a much more rocking collaborative effort with Devo from Young's film 'Human Highway'. Almost as appealing, in a mental illness kind of way. I need to see that film.

I love the sad, mournful tone of the acoustic version. I can never work out if I like the lyrics or not, I think I do, it definately works well in the Dennis Hopper film anyway.

Out of The Blue (Hey Hey, My My) by Neil Young

My my, hey hey
Rock and roll is here to stay
It's better to burn out
Than to fade away
My my, hey hey.

Out of the blue
and into the black
They give you this,
but you pay for that
And once you're gone,
you can never come back
When you're out of the blue
and into the black.

The king is gone
but he's not forgotten
This is the story
of a Johnny Rotten
It's better to burn out
than it is to rust
The king is gone
but he's not forgotten.

Hey hey, my my
Rock and roll can never die
There's more to the picture
Than meets the eye.
Hey hey, my my.

One of my favourite films ever.

Exotic Bird

2010-05-12T16:28:00.000-07:00

Dearest Yma Sumac.
I hope that wherever you are now, you are in a place where they deserve having such a unique, powerful, extremely talented force of nature.
I hope you will receive my praise and thanks for influencing me all those years when instead of listening to the so called coolest "Indie" or "Dance" what have you music, i listened to your music instead and i loved it.

Some People might consider you a eccentric, i think you are what beauty truly is, a exotic bird, something that we are not quiet sure where it came from but wherever that place might be, it must truly be amazing.

Yma Sumac, I Salute You.

Cosmic canines

2010-05-09T05:40:00.001-07:00

Today I have been thinking about space and Laika the space dog, that the Soviet union sent into orbit in 1958. It was before they sent a human and they were testing to see how animals would react to the atmosphere, weigthlessness and such. They always knew that Laika would die however, as the rocket was never intended to return to earth. Since Laika there were many other animals sent to space including Ham the Chimp a few years later by the US and other dogs, as well as guinea pigs who China sent in 1990.

I've never really tried to get into the Divine Comedy, but I found out they had written a piece of music about Laika, called Laika's Theme.

Laika's Theme (mp3)-The Divine Comedy

And one of my favourite space themed compositions, Gayanne Ballet Suite (Adagio) by Aram Khachaturian from the Stanley Kubrick and Athur C. Clarke's 2001: A Space Odyssey. It is one of the most melancholy, dystopic pieces of music, and really suits the film.

Gayanne Ballet Suite (mp3) - Aram Khachaturian

That was difficult - doing a space-themed post and not including any italo disco : )

To Get To You.

2010-05-04T12:56:00.000-07:00

I had to escape, the city was sticky and cruel
Maybe i should have called you first
But i was dying to get to you
I was dreaming while i drove
The long straight road ahead, uh huh yeah
Could taste your sweet kisses
Your arms opened wide
This fever for you is just burning me up inside

I drove all night to get to you, is that alright?
I drove all night, crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep, to make love to you
Is that alright? I drove all night

What in this world keeps us from falling apart
No matter where i go i hear the beating of our one heart
I think about you when the night is cold and dark uh huh yeah
No one can move me the way that you do
Nothing erases this feeling between me and you oooh

I drove all night to get to you, is that alright?
I drove all night, crept in your room
Woke you from your sleep to make love to you
Is that alright, I drove all night

Could taste your sweet kisses, your arms opened wide
This fever for you is just burning me up inside

I drove all night to get to you, is that alright?
I drove all night, crept in your room
Is that alright? i drove all night
I drove all night to get to you is that alright??
I drove all night crept in your room..

Love.
