I admit to skipping some of the more technical writings while following the plot with delectation but avidly read Crichton’s excellent end-notes

Tom Harper's Thriller entitled "The Book of Secrets" is an excellent read in itself but let me give you a quote worth pondering upon-a conversation comment starter from medieval section page 313

A perception of economics by a main character, the goldsmith Johannes and the money lender Soltz in the flash back sections on medieval origins of our intrigue:

(This is true in my case - Add my experience to the study -Chondrosulf alone 400mg x 3 per day.

The GUIDE findingsBoth glucosamine sulphate and acetaminophen were more effective in reducing pain than placebo. Patients taking glucosamine sulphate exhibited more relief than patients on acetaminophen.

It was concluded that once-daily 1500 mg oral doses of glucosamine sulphate may be the preferred treatment for knee osteoarthritis.

Note
It must be noted that unlike the GAIT study that was publicly funded the GUIDE study was sponsored by the manufacturers of the glucosamine compound that was used in the trial.

In both the GAIT and GUIDE studies
1500mg of glucosamine daily was used and in the GAIT study 1200mg of chondroitin daily was used. However, some manufacturers suggest that glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate supplements should be taken in two phases, for example -

* A loading phase of a month of increased levels of glucosamine (up to 2250mg) and 1200mg of chondroitin sulphate.

* A maintenance phase of 1500mg of glucosamine and 800mg of chondroitin sulphate

Other suggestions are that glucosamine and chondroitin sulphate doses should be calculated based on a person’s body weight. One recommendation is 20mg of glucosamine for every 1kg of body weight, whilst another suggestion is as follows:

* If body weight is less than 54.5kg take 1,000mg glucosamine and 800mg chondroitin sulphate.

* If body weight is between 54.5 and 91kg take 1,500mg glucosamine and 1,200 mg chondroitin sulphate.

* If body weight is more than 91kg take 2,000mg glucosamine and 1,600mg chondroitin sulphate.

Are these ploys by supplement companies to sell more of their product or is there a scientific basis for these recommendations? Well, at present the evidence for doses and schedules is fairly sparse and that is one of the reasons why daily doses of 1500mg of glucosamine and 1200mg of chondroitin sulphate are common recommendations.

What about the source of these products?

Chondroitin sulphate is usually produced from cow (bovine) cartilage but can be produced from pig (porcine), chicken and even shark cartilage. Glucosamine on the other hand is derived from shellfish, usually shrimp, lobster or crab shells.

oHigh-Time to allow referees Video-TV back-up- Better let the referees chose what video back-up they need for their own self-respect and authority:

A summary of the incidents encountered during the World Cup 2010 First Round made the fist page of the very serious french daily news paper Le Monde on Tuesday 25 June2010 (four days after my despairing post 4 days earlier, cf. OTHER POSTS below)

Video left no cause for doubt on another two decisive goals in this damned WC 2010: The goal scored by England (vs Germany) and the offside goal scored by Argentina occurred at crucial stages in both matches (double sanctions!)

Quote: Once again the referees saw nothing while the TV banished all cause for doubt. The spectators at the game, the players who saw the TV screen and the rest of the world saw it. Even if the referee saw the TV he is forbidden to use the information!!!!!

Those who still believe that video is not an immense assistance to allow efficient refereeing, justice and fairness not to mention improved soccer risk placing themselves on the unnecessary hoodlum side of (sports) management.

The factual front page article was followed up by what must be the most stupid conclusion I have ever come across hardly worthy of a paper such as Le Monde. The feature signed by Bruno Lesprit is entitled "If the referee had TV" (-video back-up) QUOTE: With "progress" one can fear that one day the Video will kill the football star" - "Lesprit" waining he gets very confused citing and adaption a Buggles song title Video Killed the Radio Star

Total Confusion:

1. Soccer-football is a visual sport perfectly adapted to TV - Video for spectators and coaches alike.

2. What has the soccer-football star got to do with hoodlum or criminal behaviour? As one who has played this game through school and school regional selection, and in top youth sides continuing as an amateur until 38 years of age (on of my team mates went on to play professional football and ended a semi-pro league at 53 years of age - an unsung hero a star in his own right-Bobby Lawrie of Plymouth(apprentice pro), Irvine Meadow (1969) Partick Thistle, Glasgow, Scotland(1969-1976). Lesprit does not appear to share the true specialists criteria for Soccer Stardom. The truely great skillful, clean players Jean-Michel Larqué and Dominique Rocheteau of the famous St Etienne finalist in the European Cup,

George Best of ManU, going back even further beyond Real Madrid's 7 times European Cup side we have Stanley Mathews...Current highly skilled players who have no need of violence, jersey pulling going for the legs not the ball -true footballers we have (although age is catching up with them) Thierry Henry 33 and Steven Gerrard,30 and the youngsters Lionnel Messi,Inesta to name but a few.

All of these players could but thrive on a cleaned-up game.

Lesprit and the current ruling bodies are also getting their knickers in knots over what should be subject to video back-up. The system KISS keep it simple stupid(s) I The referees must by now know what they need to do their job properly a few obvious but random remarks 1. The Goal line, 2 The penalty area. Decisive goal actions, 3. misconduct - especially violence and jersey pulling. Such rules did not come into rugby football over night but evolved gradually to bring rugby to the attractive spectacular game it is today. In soccer inertia is killing the game, abusing it's star performers and reducing excellent referees to the status of court jesters. Fancy technology such as electronics in the ball and the like can wait till later much later. Get a sensor on the goal line...

Come on you guys and here I am addressing the referees and their continuous learning centres- pretty brutal awakening currently. Time to decide what you need to make the sport you adjudicate a proper sport a game of fair-play where skill reigns over brutality, simulated fouls and misconduct of all sorts. As in many peaceful major change-evolutions a strike is called for. As WC 2010 shows this should be unlimited - why not start now during the WC 2010 final stages? Just Video replay back-up on a few criteria decided by the worlds top referees.

No one mentions the Carbon Tax here, it was supposedly scapped or possibly-(probably?) disguised.

The Company,trying her luck, is Suez-Gaz de France. It argues that the ambiguity arises from the nature of their long-term contract(s) with their supplier (suppliers). Nothing is reported about the client-end users long-term contract in the form of his investment in cooking equipment or longer-term heating. If the company gets it's previsions wrong who should pay? The main responsible, obviously? Fixed term contracts in unstable financial markets and economic failures. No chief financial officers (CFO)? The PDG must show the example- not the one the current CEO has shown heading both companies before their merger and doubling his enormous remuneration package, before public outcry reduced this. WE ARE FAR FROM FORD's or MAYNARD KEYNES MANAGEMENT/WORKER SALARY RATIO OF RESPECTIVELY 20/1 and 40/1 (but Keynes was a batchelor). Of course it will not amount to as much as taxing the gullible client, but...

Could the elimination of France and Italy respectively vice champion, and champion WC 2006, in the initial stages, first round ties forebode the end of the Soccer as Biz over Soccer as sport, to end the National selections of over payed, and possibly over played players being chosen for national teams?

Poor performance from England and her very well-off players, Germany doing a little better only just. Spain a favourite has gotten into trouble. But before I slate or "Slag" as they say today to use a metallurgical term for "wast chemical reactants in steel and metal smelting" all the relatively big rich EU countries we must await the Portugal vs Brazil and Spains venue today.

The smaller less well payed soccer nations are doing or did surprisingly well: USA and the Americas in general over and above the giants Argentina and Brazil, Austral Asia's Australia and New Zealand, very good football from the African continent and more than honorable performance of the Asian contingent (Koreas and Japan). lets hope that some good sense and common decency may find it's way back into football first as a Sport and why not as proper business upholding high ethical standards reflecting their undoubted influence on youngsters worldwide as opposed to what we are getting and have been for longer than, I for one, can stand, simulated fouls, jersey and arm pulling, when it is not a full body search, late leg and ankle breaking tackles, tackles from behind cheating of all sorts. Does this reflect life and society as a whole as some even experience coaches say? Is all society on video and broadcast world wide on TV? I believe I am not alone in my protest.

I. France was in no position to question the poor decision concerning the red card obtained by the young and still principled Yohann Goucuff. The incident as shown on video did not appear to warant even a yellow card, but then the referee, who did a good job on the whole, must act on "Pre-War" technology, where mistakes are encouraged, with as we now know today, to lead to total disaster.

Should players chosen to represent their country pay their own expenses? In the big football countries there is certainly a case to be made for such practice. Much publicity is generated around the selection, even if there are very little publicised share systems in operation between: federation, staff and players .

This is a long overdue up-date protest on what can make a legitimately claim:

"That Soccer-Football be put at the top the list of the"World's Worst Management."

risking further damage to the reputation of the Worlds best referees and of course to the sport as a whole.

In current times of financial and economic crises... upon crises, that is saying a lot!

I suppose we are awaiting more incidents during the World Cup in RSA, in-spite of having the best refereeing available?

I am writing this protest because violence in and around football grounds continues to increase, at least here in France. Governing bodies, National Federations, European Federations and World Cup Governing Bodies refuse to see the obvious (Video it)- that through video assisted refereeing a better refereeing system can improve the game and help take the sting out of Soccer-Football, once a sporting activity.

As in any field of human endeavour, a sense of justice and correct management is a basic tenet. (May our politicians and top management take heed for this applies universally, cf. reference to crises upon crises above also contenders for this Top Award)

Greatly improved refereeing and refereeing management is now absolutely possible in soccer-football, thanks to video techniques which are highly performant and of proven efficiency in many sports: tennis, american football and last but not least, RUGBY- FOOTBALL, indeed, a most difficult sport to referee. In Rugby no major decision can be faulted thanks to the referee's use of slow-motion video, where doubt exists, before awarding tries and drops goals.

Like the rugby referee, every football fan (spectator) in front of his TV set, TV journalists at the ground and eventually all the supporters seeing large screen video replay in slow motion at the Stadium can see details of any rule breaking, doubtful views of action in the critical areas around the goal;

I personally suggest that this area be chosen as the penalty area, the 18 yards (16.45m)x 44 yards (40m)wide. such is the extent of foul play with serious consequences for all on the pitch, players, teams, the mid-field referee , better known as the man in the middle, incidentally the lowest plaid job on the field!

Causes of useless misunderstanding continue. In the worst cases the game can be ruined by bad refereeing.

Ramifications clearly affect the fans and their behaviour even if refereeing is not the whole story but where the eventuality of bad refereeing, in at least in the most critical area, the penalty box, can be eliminated immediately.

Mid-field play can be monitored and relayed by 4th or even 5th referees (clean job creation) If serious sanctions taken on the spot. Warnings should be accompanied by time-out as in Rugby. (further details are subject to debate) .

Even the ordinary football fan is highly opinionated, to say the least, but disagreement does not necessarily and usually does not lead to physical violence and after match destruction. But the rather large fringe of hooligan-elements mostly attracted to the big clubs is another story or more precisely the usual old story of group behaviour well documented in the world of sport.
However, in my long experience as a sports fan, I believe the sports press guilty of under playing the extent of hooliganism particularly soccer-football type. In this there is most probably a dearth of investigative crime-sports press. (But in the Social and Economic Sciences these are most certainly well and impartially documented, but do they have the bite of the investigative press?)

MY PLEA
Give the game every means for good clean refereeing as all sports lovers wish. And cut the grass (and maybe more) from under the feet of the hooligans.

Who is in charge here? Who is responsible for the organisation? Who stands to make money from this? Who pays? Is it TV coverage or ticket holder, and to what extent? No fan-crowd, no hooliganism! These question and more must be answered and the general public money saved.

By comparaison, budgets for video refereed Rugby are, by and large very much smaller except Toulouse and Stade Français,Paris. The spread vares from 28,10MEuros max (Toulouse) to 8.7MEuros mini (Albi) Ref 2.

Regular followers will have already seen my echo of the video "Chinese boy sings Whitney Huston" - a boost for the long awaited return (if any?) of Huston herself!

But more important I have added several songs and videos of a talented french youngster, "Folk at its best" in the person of Julien Pierson alias Peter SunSon, brought to the wider public via the French nouvelle (New) Star TV show (M6-TV Channel in France). I was flabbergasted and thought immediately of Bob Dylan with a better voice. Finding Julien Pierson, was difficult but my efforts were rewarding. He was, without a shadow of a doubt, my choice in the 2008 New Star 2008 France & beyond. Listening to Julien again I saw much of what I like in James Blunt and as Julien himself says he appreciate Damien Rice and sings delicate as well as his idol. That's a lot of Talent: Dylan,Blunt, Rice... in one 19 year old youngster.

If I had the funds I would produce his shows! Check "Julien Pierson alias Peter SunSon video in the Top centre block and his other works in the LHS menu bar in the company of some originals "Jeff Buckley, Murry Head, newer and older undicovered talent untill recently such as Susan Boyle and Petter Potts, in the UK.

Still the main media largely ignores these youngsters. No wonder main media is so boring the same old crowd, the same ols songs, the same old sounds. Glad I blog not only to avoid the mainstream repetitive crowd but also, in this case, helps research in more depth the real talent which does not necesarily fit the mould. Julien Pierson-Peter sunSon got into the final 15 and unless the bloggers get behind work such as his he will be left out of the National and International circuit. A great pity for both the artist and the public.

Obama delivered a Nobel acceptance speech that he saw as a treatise on the use and prevention of war. He crafted much of the address himself and the scholarly remarks — at about 4,000 words — were nearly twice as long as his inaugural address.

Obama refused to renounce war for his nation or under his leadership, saying defiantly [defensively, as in defense of his policy?] that "I face the world as it is" and that he is obliged to protect and defend the United States.

"A nonviolent movement could not have halted Hitler's armies.

Negotiations cannot convince al-Qaida's leaders to lay down their arms," Obama said.

"To say that force is sometimes necessary is not a call to cynicism, it is a recognition of history."

The president laid out the circumstances where war is justified — in self-defense, to come to the aid of an invaded nation and on humanitarian grounds, such as when civilians are slaughtered by their own government or a civil war threatens to engulf an entire region.

"The belief that peace is desirable is rarely enough to achieve it," he said.

"No matter how justified, war promises human tragedy," he said. "some will kill, some will be killed."

But he also stressed the need to fight war according to "rules of conduct" that reject torture and other methods. And he emphasized the need to exhaust alternatives to violence, using diplomatic outreach and sanctions with teeth to confront nations such as Iran or North Korea that defy international demands to halt their nuclear programs or those such as Sudan, Congo or Burma that brutalize their people.

"Let us reach for the world that ought to be," Obama said. "We can understand that there will be war, and still strive for peace."
