J’ai découvert Bon Iver lorsque Peter Gabriel avait une reprise de son Flume sur son album Scratch my Back et lui même avait une reprise ethérée de son Come Talk to Me et j’avais été séduit par son folk aérien. Du coup, j’ai été séduit bis par son nouvel album et par ce clip réalisé par Nabil Elderkin, plutôt habitué des clips de rap, aux accents de pamphlet pour le tourisme en Islande et le pire c’est que ça marche, parceque pinaise c’est beau.

I discovered Bon Iver when Peter Gabriel did a cover of Flume on his Scratch my Back effort and he did an ethereal cover of PG’s Come Talk to Me and I was seduced by his airy folk. And I was seduced again by his new album and that video directed by Nabil Elderkin, who usually do videos for rap artists, even if it looks like it’s there to sell you a trip to Iceland. But fuck me, it works.

Je partage ça, non pas à cause du clip, sans grand intérêt, mais tout simplement en raison de l’enthousiasme que soulève cette chanson. Je sais pas, la première fois que j’ai entendu ce morceau, j’ai craqué. Le premier single de Making Mirrors le prochain album du chanteur australien Gotye avec en featuring la chanteuse neo zélandaise Kimbra.

If I share this, it’s not because of the video, quite uninteresting, but because of the great enthousiasm I got from this song. I don’t know, the first time I heard that song, I was hooked. It’s the the first single of Maing Mirrors the new album from aussie Gotye featuring kiwi Kimbra.

Sublime clip, belle chanson, autour de corps qui se délitent, réalisé par Eric Epstein. Sacrément couillu. EDIT: Ok, aussi incroyable que ça puisse paraitre, l'effet des corps n'est pas en 3D, mais bien 100% After Effects et il dévoile même comment il a fait, là.

Live Below the Line

Mon pote Bertrand Remaut m’a demandé de l’aide pour co réaliser cette jolie promo pour la section kiwi de Live Below the Line. Pas de budget, nada, nip, queud, zéro, mais ça ne nous a pas empêché de bien se débrouiller pour fournir un truc que je trouve bien chantmax [cela dit, je le ferais pas tout les jours. Là mon compte en banque après notre mini trip en Australie fait la gueule comme il l’a plus fait depuis longtemps]!

My mate Bertrand Remaut asked me for some help to co direct this really nice promo for Live Below the Line New Zealand. No budget, but it didn’t stop us from creating a really neat 45 second promo. But I’d rather not do that too often, because my bank account is at an all time low after our mini vacation in Australia. Bad idea it was.

Cinema 4D R13

Maxon vient d’annoncer la sortie en septembre de la release 13 de leur logiciel Cinema 4D. Plein de jolie nouveautés en perspective, comme l’apparition de la 3D stéréoscopique, très à la mode [After Effects CS5.5 s’était vu rajouter cette fonction] plus tout un tas de fonctions améliorées comme un module de profondeur de champ plus réaliste, une interface redesignée, de meilleurs outils d’animation de persos, etc. Et mon préféré, une meilleure intégration avec After Effects notamment dans le cas de l’utilisation de multi caméras avec l’outil Stage qui marchait pas du tout avec After Effects et me fasait perdre un temps fou. Pour plus d’infos sur les nouveautés, je conseille de vous rendre sur la page de Cineversity qui lui est consacrée.

Maxon just unveiled the release of the release 13 of Cinema 4D. Lots of new features added like stereoscopic 3D [that has also been added to After Effects cs5.5] and a bunch of welcomed improvements like a new depth of field module, redesigned interface, better character animation tools, etc. And my favourite, a better integration with After Effects, especially with the Stage object and the multi cam render that wasn’t working at all with AE and made me waste a lot of time to work around. Ok Go - All is not Lost

S’il y a bien un groupe qui a redéfinit la notion de clip ces dernières années, c’est Ok Go. D’un groupe que personne n’aurait vraiment remarqué, ils sont devenus plus Gondry que Michel grâce à leurs nombreuses et incroyables vidéos. Cette fois-ci, à l’instar de Arcade Fire, ils se lancent dans le clip sur Chrome et s’associent avec la compagnie de danse contemporaine Pilobolus [que j’ai vue en spectacle il y a quelques années, c’est excellent] pour créer ce clip avec un petit bout d’interactif [méfiez vous de votre message personnalisé toutefois].

If there is one band that reinvented the concept of music videos those last few years, it’s Ok Go. Very few would have noticed the band if it was not for their incredible videos, more Gondry than Michel. Just like Arcade Fire, they worked up a partnership with Chrome to create that browser based video with the help of the modern dance company, Pilobolus [I saw one of their show a few years ago, they’re great!]. There is even a personalized message, but be careful what you ask for.

Björk - Crystalline

On avait un peu perdu Björk de vue ces derniers temps. A dire vrai, depuis Homogenic en 97, j’étais pas trop à fond. Et puis l’autre jour j’ai entendu à la radio son niveau singe, Crystalline, et je me suis remis à espérer, malgré la fin jungle tellement 90’s, que peut-être Biophilia, qui sortira en septembre sera peut-être intéressant. En attendant, découvrons le clip réalisé par Michel Gondry évidemment.

I’ve lost track of Björk for quite some time now. To tell the truth, since ‘97 Homogenic, I haven’t been 100% enthusiast. And the other day I heard, Crystalline, her new single, on the radio, and I started to hope again, even with that 90’s jungle ending. Maybe Biophilia, set to be released in September will be worthwhile. While we’re waiting, let’s check out the video, directed by Michel Gondry obviously.

Récemment, je me disais qu’il y avait trop de vidéos avec des objets abstraits sur un fond uni à base de noir & blanc avec des trucs faits sous mograph inspiré par les tutos de Nick Campbell et le style de Maxim Zhestkov. L’abstraction ça va cinq minutes, on peut considérer que je suis pas un artiste forcément hyper talentueux, mais j’essaie d’éviter au maximum la reprise d’idée et de concepts tout faits. Ou du moins si je dois reprendre un concept qui me plait, j’essaie d’y injecter un maximum d’idées personelles pour recréer un truc nouveau. Et ben le russe Andrew Serkin en a eu marre de cette mode et l’a fait savoir. De fort belle façon.

Recently I was actually thinking there was too muh abstact video produced. You know, the ones with a simple gradient background and some abstract shape deforming using mograph and inspired by Nick Campbell’s tutorials and Maxim Zhestkov’s style. Enough of that already!. I’m not necessarily the most talented artist, but I always tried not to get influenced too much by those trends [I was a bit more when I was beginning this job, makes sense]. Or if I leap into it, I’ll always try to change the context of the concept and add some personal ideas. And russian motion designer Andrew Serkin has had it with trend as well and he let everyone know in the nicest way.

TV On The Radio - You

TV on the Radio est un de mes groupes “indés” préférés, et si j’avais pas trop acroché à leur précédent album, Dear Science, leur nouveau, Nine Types of Light, a bien tourné. C’est pourquoi, je me permet de partager cet excellent clip/court métrage réalisé par Barney Clay qui raconte les retrouvailles des membres du groupe dans un diner 1 an après leur “rupture” [fictive évidemment] et ce qu’ils ont fait depuis. Le tout intercalé avec le “vrai” clip de You racontant la reconversion princienne de Tunde Adebimpe, le chanteur.

TV on the Radio is one my favorite “indie” band and even I wasn’t much into their previous effort, Dear Science, I really dig the new one, Nine Types of Light. So that’s why I’m sharing this great short filmusic video [(c) me] that tells the story of the band fictive break up and the members meet up a year after, with their stories of what they’ve been up to. That leads into the actual music video of ‘You’, showing Tunde Adebimpe’s best Prince impersonation.

Tron: Destiny

Anthony Scott Burns a réalisé ce fan film Tron en 3 semaines et même si c’est pas toujours parfait [dialogues et direction d’acteur clichés, garde de nuit sur deux étages en même temps], il y a une belle exploitation personnelle de l’univers de Tron [le principal défaut des fan films, c’est justement la non réappropriation de l’univers adapté]. Des photos de tournage sont dispo ici.

Anthony Scott Burns directed this Tron fan film in three weeks and even if it’s not always perfect [dialogs and direction is somewhat cliché, or the night watchman being on two different floors almost at once], there is a really nice personal touch on the troniverse [most fan films fail on the personal point of view]. Beastie Boys - Don’t Play no Game that I Can’t Win.

Spike Jonze refait équipe avec les Beasties pour un clip/court métrage de 11 minutes réalisé avec des poupées façon Big Jim/Action Man-le-plus-grand-de-tout-les-héros et une histoire bien nawak à base de commandos anti Beastie Boys, des zombies, du Yeti et la présence toujours sympathique de Santogold.

Spike Jonze is back with the Beasties for an 11 minute music video/short film made with action figures and a crazy story about an anti Beastie force, the Yeti, some zombies and other stupid stuff. Including also the ever so lovely Santogold.

Et souvenons nous à quel point Sabotage, c’est bien

Oui, je sais, j’ai été absent longtemps, sans rien dire, c’est parceque j’étais en production. Pendant 2 semaines et c’était bien intense. D’un truc dont je suis très content. Seulement, manque de bol, y’a des problèmes avec le client et j’espère que ça va pas trop foutre le dawa, parceque j’ai envie de me la pêter moi! Mais on verra ça plus tard.
En attendant, voici le trailer pour The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmore, une histoire interactive pour l’iPad réalisé par William Joyce, ayant bossé chez Pixar. En clair c’est une histoire pour enfant, mais avec des bouts interactifs comme pour les pop up books, mais sur l’iPad.

Yes, I know, I was gone a long time, without saying anything. It’s because I was working on a production for two weeks and it was something. I’m actually quite happy with what I’ve done, but there is a problem with the client, and I hope this won’t prevent me from using what we’ve just done as some self promoting material [it’s a 45s commercial for a charity with a lot of cool and snappy motion graphics], but we’ll see about that later.
In the meantime, here is The Fantastic Flying Books of Mr. Morris Lessmor, an interactive book for the iPad written and directed by William Joyce who worked at Pixar. It’s a children book with interactive bits a little bit like pop up books, but on the iPad.

Videocopilot Element 3D

Videocopilot vient de dévoiler les premières fonctionnalités de son nouveau plug in pour After Effects et le moins qu’on puisse dire, c’est que ça a l’air puissant. Dans le toolkit de l’indispensable pour AE, en premier je mettrais Particular, suivi de près par Optical Flares [Twitch est sympa, mais on sent que c’est un test]. Optical Flares a son époque avait donné un coup dans la fourmilière ronflante des plugs After Effects, offrant une interface particulière et une approche intelligente des effets de flares. Indispensable et pas trop cher. Et bien imaginez Element 3D comme un super Particular, mais bien plus puissant, et offrant l’import de modèles 3D en obj. La démo est excitante et semble-t-il ne couvre qu’une petite partie des fonctions disponibles. La date de sortie est encore un peu floue, ainsi que le prix, on peut s’attendre à ce qu’il soit plus cher que Optical Flares [125 dollars], mais moins que Particular [400 dollars].

Videocopilot just showed the first functionalities of their new plug in for After Effects: Elements 3D. And the least you could say is that it look super powerful. In the not-to-be-missed toolkit of After Effects, I’d put Particular first, but Optical Flares is a close second [Twitch is nice, sure, but it’s just a test plug in]. Optical Flares really did shook the plug in world by offering a clever user interface and cool approach to lens flares. Now think of Element 3D as a super Particular, with obj import and real 3D. Exciting demo and it seems it only covers a portion of available functionalities. The release is date is not set, but it should be soon. The price is inkown as well, but I think it should cost between Optical Flares [$125] and Particular [$400].

Splitscreen: A Love Story

Ok, ok, ok, en ce moment, j’ai pas la tête sur le blog, du coup, j’écris peu, j’en suis désolé. Mais rattrapons nous avec ce film un peu en retard, gagnant du Nokia Shorts competition 2011 et tourné avec le Nokia N8, Splitscreen: A Love Story raconte l’histoire de vie en parallèle, à Paris et New York, jusqu’à ce que...
Les plus malins d’entre vous reconnaîtront Half Days des frères Niquet, réalisé en 2003 [la ressemblance est quand même frappante]. Et vous pouvez aussi checker le making of de Splitscreen.

Ok, right now, I cannot set my mind on this blog, I just can’t and I’m sorry for it. But let’s make it up to you with this late late film, winner of the Nokia Shorts competition 2011 and shot with a Nokia N8: Splitscreen: A Love Story. It tels the story of two lives in parallel, in Paris and New York, until one faithful moment...
Some of you may recognise that the concept originally came from Half Days from the Niquet bros, shot in 2003. But Splitscreen has a nice making of.

Plot Device

Afin d’illustrer les possibilités offertes par ses produits, Red Giant [éditeur de plug ins pour principalement pour After Effects dont le fameux Particular] a produit ce court métrage réalisé par Seth Worley et co écrit avec Aharon Rabinowitz. Le film est sympatoche, ne casse pas trois pattes à un canard et si l’acteur principal est très bon, le film se plante un peu en raison d’une mise en scène, d’un montage et surtout d’une finition très inégale. Ce qui est con, quand on pense que le film était sensé vendre les produits Red Giant qui sont précisément destinés à passer un bon coup de polish. Mais ça reste rigolo pour le concept et l’acteur, qui font que le film fonctionne.

In order to show the possibilities of their products, Red Giant has produced this 9-minute short film directed by Seth Worley and co written by Aharon Rabinowitz. The movie is ok, not brilliant and if the main actor is damn good [in a Shia Labeouf way...], it falls short on some of its premises, because of an overall direction, editing and finishing touch that are just not there from time to time. Which is a shame since the Red Giant products are supposed to bring the finishing touches to your movie. It’s still funny for the concept and the actor, who both make Plot Device work.

Double Feature: Prisoners of Ice & The King of Hearts

Voici donc mes deux derniers bébés: 2 vidéos faites pour votre bonheur à tous. La première: Prisoners of Ice est un timelapse avec un twist de malade mental que t’y croira même pas quand tu le verras. La seconde, The King of Hearts est avant tout un test d’animation de persos en CGI que je voulais faire. Mais comme j’aime bien me compliquer la tâche, j’en ai profité pour compositer le dit personnage dans une séquence filmée. Resonance

Je sais que tout le monde en a déjà parlé, mais quand je suis dans la phase finale de production et que à chaque fois que je me dit “c’est bon, aujourd’hui je termine mon truc” et que à la fin de la journée, je me rend compte que j’ai pas finit, j’ai pas envie de passer mon temps à écrire des articles sur le blog. C’est comme ça. Mais Resonance reste une oeuvre trop importante pour que je passe à coté. En bref, Resonance est une compilation de très courts films réalisés par une trentaine d’artistes et studios indépendants, références dans le monde du motion graphics, aidés par une dizaine de studios de sound design afin d’explorer la relation entre géométrie et son.

I know it’s not 100% fresh, since everybody talked about already, but it’s still at least 95% fresh, and when I’m myself in the final stages of production, and I think to myself “ok, today you finish this” and that at the end of the day, I realise that I won’t, I can’t get myself to write for this blog. But Resonance is still an important body of work. It is a compilation of very short films directed by some of the most prominent indie studios and artists in the motion design world, helped by a dozen of sound design studios. They explore the relationship between geometry and sound.
