What to See and Do in Mallorca in June

Visit the famous Formentor and the Tramuntana Mountains

The famous Formentor lighthouse was built in one of the most inaccessible and isolated locations imaginable. At the very end of the Tramuntana mountain range, there was no road, so one had to be built. Between 1857 and 1859, many men labored to create the seventeen kilometers of the Camí Vell del Far (Old Lighthouse Way). In 1860 the go-ahead was given for the lighthouse. The engineer in charge was Emili Pou, known as the ‘father’ of Balearic lighthouses. The road to the lighthouse is one of the most popular sightseeing routes in the Tramuntana mountain range.

Some two hundred men were employed in the construction. Stone from quarries in Sa Pobla was used. Stored in Alcudia, this was then transported by sea. They used a winch to lift the stones off the boats, to the site, almost 170 meters above. The lighthouse first became operational in 1863. However, it was to be a further 100 years before it used electricity, such were the complications of the logistics of supply. Today Access to the Lighthouse is restricted in the summer months, visitors can park at the beach of Formentor and visit by shuttle bus

At the Mirador de Sa Creueta in Formentor is a tribute to Antoni Parietti, a monument built in 1968. It was in recognition of the civil engineer who truly did make the lighthouse accessible: he was the engineer responsible for the road from Puerto Pollensa. Parietti was just 24 years old when in 1923 he was appointed as head of roads and public works. Two years later, work on the road started, a project so dangerous that it has been suggested that it would not even be contemplated nowadays.

Hotel Formentor

The road was to be of benefit to Adan Diehl. A wealthy Argentine poet, he conceived the idea for the Formentor Hotel. Diehl was a romantic and not much of a businessman. He was also very unlucky. The hotel opened in 1929, but the Great Depression struck. In 1934, hounded by creditors, he was forced to hand over the land. At the end of the year, the hotel closed. By then, it was controlled by a bank and his creditors. The hotel still exists today and is one of the most exclusive hotels on the island with rooms exceeding 1000€ per night during high season. The general public can visit and one way is to enjoy lunch at their sea view terrace, a real delight and excellent value for money.

The people of Pollensa were grateful for all that Diehl had done. A banquet was held in his honor at the Sant Domingo Cloister in Pollensa and he was named ‘Protector Son of Pollensa’. Bankrupt, he and his wife, María Elena, were given financial assistance to return to Argentina.

Formentor Facts

The Name

There is debate as to the origin of the name Formentor. One opinion is that it came from the Latin ‘promontories’, meaning promontory. Another is that it was derived from the Catalan ‘forwent’ to refer to a variety of grain. Whatever the origin, the first documented reference was to ‘Promontore’ around 1265.

Winston Churchill

Although the Formentor Hotel closed at the end of 1934, it soon reopened. Two important guests stayed at the hotel in December 1935. Winston and Clementine Churchill were assigned Room 222. Churchill, overlooked for the post of First Lord of the Admiralty, was taking a painting and writing break from politics. Or was there more to his visit? The Vice-Consul in Palma lavished him with food and drink. The Vice-Consul was Alan Hillgarth, who was to become Churchill’s spy chief in Spain.

Pirate defenses

La Fortaleza on Formentor was bought in 2011 by British banker James Lupton. The estate of seven houses was a fortification dating from 1628 which was created as a defense against pirate raids. It acquired more recent international recognition as the Mallorcan home of arms dealer Richard Roper in the BBC series ‘The Night Manager’.

Unesco World Heritage Site of Mallorca

The Tramuntana Mountains extend from Andratx to Formentor. The name of the mountains comes from the north wind of the eight winds of the Mediterranean. In 2011, the mountains – the Serra de Tramuntana – were declared a Unesco World Heritage Site in the cultural landscape category. The declaration was a recognition of the symbiosis between nature and human activity. This had occurred over several centuries and had involved different cultures. The legacy includes ancient hydraulic systems and the dry-stone paths, walls, and terraces that have shaped the mountains’ landscape.

Unesco also acknowledged the mountains’ contribution to Mallorcan spirituality. This is exemplified by the Lluc Sanctuary, with its roots in the original thirteenth-century sanctuary dedicated to the Virgin Mary – the Mother of God of Lluc, Mallorca’s patron saint – whose image (‘La Moreneta’, the Black Madonna) is to be found in the chapel dedicated to her. Another example from the same century is the Miramar monastery in Valldemossa, which was founded by the Mallorcan religious philosopher Ramon Llull.

There are many uses for the humble potato, but none so elegant than the coca de patata that can be found in Mallorca and specifically from the mountain village of Valldemossa. We are sure that the previous residents of this mountain village have enjoyed a coca de patata with their hot chocolate or coffee. This sweet delight has been produced in the area for hundreds of years. The main ingredients are flour , boiled potatoes, lard, eggs, milk, salt, and yeast. Lard is used instead of butter because this is what was available historically and the resulting sweet bun is a favorite indulgence. There are many small cafes in Valldemossa and all have their versions.

Lengua con Alcaparras

This is a typical delicious Mallorquin delicacy that can be found in many villages across the Balearic islands. Commonly produced with pork or beef tongue and often served with Rice or potato puree. The main ingredient of course is tongue which is cooked with tomato, onion, garlic, and herbs for about an hour then sliced and presented with capers and an accompaniment. Whilst not suited to all tastes it is highly recommended.

Coca Mallorquina

The coca Malloquina is a Mallorcan staple and can be found everywhere on the island and even in petrol stations. If you want a tasty snack that won’t cost the earth then this is for you, It is basically a bed of flat pastry that is topped with anything the housewife can find to put on it. The most common variations are a coca de Verduras (vegetables) and this can include Red peppers, capers, onion, and tomato, or a coca de trempo (tomato, onion, green pepper).

The great thing about Coca Mallorquina is that its transportable and cheap so if you have a day planned at the beach and you need a convenient solution for feeding the family then its ideal for that. Most if not all bakeries on the island will sell you a slice or even a full tray of coca and this will feed a family of 6 easily for your beach day out. Coca mallorquina its not at all expensive at about 13 euros a tray, just advise your bakery a day in advance so it will be ready for you.

Galletas Mallorquinas from Arta

The Mallorcans are very proud of their history and traditions and this can also be said of their snacking culture. If you meet a Mallorcan abroad and were to ask them what they miss most about Mallorca one of the main answers will probably be the food, and sometimes the tasty olive oil biscuits that are a mainstay in every larder across the island and these are the tasty oven-baked savory biscuits. One of the main producers of these biscuits is the industrially produced Quely variety which can be found on sale everywhere.

The history of these biscuits is not clear but it’s thought that the recipe and necessity originate from the seafaring industry as sailors needed a source of nourishment and this was the hardtack biscuit or cracker. These biscuits were durable and could survive long journeys and were often baked several times to improve shelf life. The Mallorcan biscuit is of course much more palatable than the biscuits used by sailors in the previous centuries.

Several brands can be found around the island but one of our favorites is produced in the village of Arta at the forn de sa placa, this family-run business produces several types of biscuit, from wholewheat and rye and sesame and sunflower seeds to our favorite the hot pepper which packs ann intense savory punch. They are an ideal accompaniment to any meal or even a quick snack. Their products can be purchased online or at many points of sale throughout the island.

Arroz Brut

When we find out that arroz brut is on the menu this always brings a smile to our faces. The direct translation is dirty rice and this is taken from the fact that the end product looks exactly like that because of the ingredients used. Arroz brut can best be described as a rice casserole that can err on the side of a soup as there is generally a lot of liquid. Ingredients differ as this is originally a farmhouse dish and so this means that the housewife used the seasonal ingredients available to her, pork, game, quails, rabbit artichokes, snails, and spices such as clove, cinnamon and saffron among others. Arroz brut is great at all times of the year and especially for sharing and on family occasions. One of our favorite places to enjoy Arroz brut is at the restaurant Alhambra in the port of Alcudia, they often have it on the menu del dia and it is highly recommended.

Sa Pobla

Sa Pobla, where the Potato Fair takes place in June offers visitors an authentic taste of Mallorcan history. The fair provides visitors with opportunities to taste the best of the island’s favorite potato dishes and soak up a flavor of Mallorca.

The history of potatoes in Mallorca

The British introduced the potato to the Balearics during the eighteenth century when Mallorca was periodically under British control. By the end of that century, Mallorca had been alerted to the possibilities offered by the potato, but it wasn’t to be until the mid-nineteenth century that production started to take off. There had been misgivings about the potato: it was thought that a vegetable that is grown in the soil surely couldn’t be good for the health

As these anxieties eased, there were to be two main areas for growing – Sa Pobla and Soller. The marshy soil in Sa Pobla was to prove to be more advantageous and so Sa Pobla began a process by which the municipality became established as Mallorca’s center for potato-growing. Sa Pobla produces potatoes for the island’s consumers and its reputation has extended overseas – Sa Pobla satisfies some of northern Europe’s demand for new potatoes.

The versatility of the potato is highlighted each June by Sa Pobla’s evening potato fair – some thirty or so bars and restaurants present potato-based tapas in the Plaça Major. But while the potato is the crop most associated with Sa Pobla, there is another which has become just as important and now takes pride of place as the theme for Sa Pobla’s autumn fair in November – rice.

The history of rice in Mallorca

The history of rice in Sa Pobla is very much older than the potato. During the centuries of Moors’ occupation of Mallorca, rice was grown in the Albufera wetlands and there was some export of this rice. Following the conquest by Jaume I in 1229, the Catalans stopped the cultivation. This was partly for cultural reasons – it had been a Moorish practice – but was also because the Catalans felt that the method of cultivation was unhygienic. Potatoes and rice, therefore, had something in common – health fears.

At the turn of the twentieth century, there was a plan for rice cultivation on a significant scale. The impetus came from a member of Mallorca’s noble class, Joaquim Gual de Torrella. He had acquired the assets of the New Majorca Land Company, the failed British organization that had overseen the drying-out of Albufera.

Gual de Torrella drafted in experts from Valencia, where rice had been produced since the eighteenth century and was to make Valencia famous for paella. Unfortunately, serious flooding destroyed the entire rice harvest. To make matters worse, the flooding increased the salt levels in the water of Albufera. This disaster in 1906 ruined the huge 320-hectare rice cultivation area. Rice-growing dwindled to such an extent that by the 1970s only one percent of this area was being used to grow rice.

In the 1990s rice made a comeback. Bomba short-grain rice took off in such a way that there are now some 200 hectares devoted to production. Today, Sa Pobla rice is a key ingredient of one of Mallorca’s most delicious and traditional dishes – the aforementioned arròz brut.

Muro, Artá and Els Calderers

Muro, Arta, and Els Calderers offer a majestic view and more than 800 years of fascinating culture and history.

Muro

Muro simply means wall – the Romans referred to it as ‘Murus’. This was because the location provided a view of the whole of the Bay of Alcudia and could therefore act as a wall against pirate attacks. The moors created a district called Algebeli, which the Christians divided and formed into the parishes of Sant Joan de Muro and Santa Margalida de Muro (now just Santa Margalida). The Sant Joan of Muro was Saint John the Baptist, after whom the church is named. The church is an impressive sight.

Churches dominate villages’ urban landscapes, but few do so to the degree which Sant Joan does. It was built between 1570 and 1611, the original church from 1248 having been deemed too small to serve the 1,600 inhabitants. The bell tower was finished in 1640. It houses four bells known as Barbara, Trinitat, Angelina, and Eloi. At the fiestas for Sant Antoni in January, fire cascades down the front of the church and the bell tower. This is part of what is one of the most spectacular of all ‘correfocs’, demons’ fire-runs.

The Ethnology Museum opened in 1965. It displays objects representative of life before tourism; the ground floor containing a variety of traditional rooms as well as a kitchen and a pharmacy from the nineteenth century. The upper floor has farming equipment and traditional ceramics, such as siurell figurines.

Artá

The iconic structure of Sant Salvador dominates the skyline in Artá. Proudly perched on a hill, it overlooks the entire village. Early accounts of the site refer to a Moorish citadel, Almudaina, which hosted a mosque. The christian conquerors converted this into a church, and the walls were rebuilt in the sixteenth century as protection against pirate raids. The current sanctuary was built in 1825, and the two towers were erected towards the end of the nineteenth century. One of the most outstanding features of Sant Salvador is the Renaissance window on the first floor. Sant Salvador was adopted as Artá’s patron saint in 1922.

On the outskirts of the village is the talayotic settlement of Ses Païsses. One of many such prehistoric sites in Mallorca, Ses Païsses is among the best-preserved. It was founded around 850 BC, the talayotic era generally taken to have started some 600 years before. By the time that Ses Païsses was created, the layout of settlements had moved on from mainly a defensive function provided by the talayot megaliths, which probably served as lookout towers. The taula (table), a pillar with a horizontal stone on top of it, became common in the later talayotic era. It is thought that the taula had some form of astronomical purpose.

Els Calderers

Els Calderers in Sant Joan is an estate that dates back to the thirteenth century. Records from 1285 refer to the estate belonging to the Calderers family. It is a superb example of the preservation of traditions, but with its own life as a place for events such as weddings.

Construction of the main building started in 1750. It houses, among other things, a grand living room with an impressive fireplace, its wine cellar, a music room, and a traditional Mallorcan kitchen. There is also a granary, which reflects the estate’s farming function. The general public is invited to visit Els Calderes and can do so daily in Summertime.

Area Facts

Muro

Between the village of Muro and the Playa de Muro resort lies the Albufera Nature Park. The Albufera land and water were important in determining new municipal boundaries in 1954. Neighbouring Sa Pobla acquired more of this land. In exchange, Muro obtained an area of coast that is now the main part of Playa de Muro. Muro, it might be said, got the better deal as Sa Pobla gave up its beach.

Caves of Artá

Ses Païsses and the Caves of Arta were the settings for an epic poem by the Pollensa priest Miquel Costa I Llobera. ‘Nuredduna’ told the story of the Talayotic prophetess Nuredduna and her love for a captured Greek sailor, Melesigeni. In Palma, near the Palacio de Congresos, is a statue of Nuredduna, looking out to sea for her loved one.

Els Calderers

The mahogany furniture mostly came from the city of Manacor, renowned for its furniture production in Mallorca. The centuries-old furniture includes a canterano, (chest of drawers), richly decorated with inlays on the outside.

What to See and Do in Mallorca in May

May in Mallorca is the beginning of the main tourist season. All the attractions are open and prepared for the influx of visitors. Here we will try and give you some inspiration for interesting activities and events that you can enjoy with your family.

What can I do with children during May?

Here we will outline some of our favorite beaches to visit in May. Some are off the beaten tourist track and will need a hire car or some independent modes of transport as public transport is not guaranteed.

A visit to the beach with the family

There are many secluded beaches in Mallorca, Es Trenc on the east coast being one of the most famous and frequently visited. There are endless secret calas and small coves that are difficult to get too and of course, you won’t find much competition for a space on the sand. This is all well and good if you are a couple with time on our hands and romance in the air but with 2 children and the contents of the apartment in tow and nearly the kitchen sink, the priorities change a little. What is needed is a beach with easy parking, a wide sandy beach and shallow water with access to toilets and somewhere simple to get drinks and food and preferably a supermarket as well. Here we will give a few examples of places we like that are convenient and are some of our family favorites.

A visit to Alcudia Beach

This has to be our top pick for somewhere to take the family and especially if you have very young children. The beach is enormous and even if there is an escape attempt, as long as you have encamped in a good location there is no way mum or dad won’t catch the offender before they reach the shoreline. There are plenty of beach bars to get snacks and small spar supermarkets dotted around. There is a large burger king in the port of Alcudia as well as several big-name fast-food outlets. The beach bars are expensive, but there are also many small mom and pop fast food places that are value for money.

The water in the port is shallow and this beach stretches for about 10 kilometers so there is plenty of space. Parking is usually not a problem, and we recommend having a look on google maps before you go and deciding the general area that you want to visit. Then you can check for landmarks as when you drive to Alcudia the beach is not visible from the main road. Parking is free in Alcudia, but pay attention to entrance and exit ways and remember at weekends it is generally much busier than weekdays.

A visit to Santa Ponsa Beach

The beach in Santa Ponsa evokes memories of childhood. It’s a firm family favorite for us as all there are ingredients are required to have a great day at the beach. Shallow water, a great beach bar, and plenty of room for the children to run around. Parking in Santa Ponsa can sometimes be difficult to find so again it’s better to plan in advance and have a look at the general layout of the town as there is a one-way system in place in several areas. There are 2 large car parks in the resort and both are near the beach.

A curious attraction on the beach is the colony of monk parakeets, these are small green parrots that are not indigenous to the area, but are the result of released pets many years ago. The colony has grown considerably and can be quite fun for the children to watch.

A visit to Son Serra De Marina Beach

There is never a summer that passes that we don’t make at least a few visits to the beach at Son Serra de Marina. This is a beach popular with locals as many have summer houses here and it is not a beach that is near to any tourist resort. Son Serra De marina can be described as a village that comes to life in the Summer time and hibernates in the winter time as most of the buildings are summer or weekend houses.

There is no industry to speak of and the main pastime is going to the beach and enjoying the sunshine and the sea. There are a few restaurants and the main beach bar is called café Sol which is just a stone’s throw from the main sandy beach. We have to say that there is always a great atmosphere at café sol and especially if they have live music. It’s a great place to spend a summer afternoon with children of all ages, the food is also great.

Sopas de Matanzas

This Mallorquin farmhouse favorite may not grace the tables of many fine-dining restaurants, but it will surely be one of the highlights of your gastronomic experience whilst in Mallorca in May. This is a hearty thick soup and just the ticket to satisfy your hunger for Mediterranean cuisine.

Ingredients of the sopa de matanzas include pork loin and rib, butifarron sausage, onion, garlic, parsley, mushroom, tomato paste, Mallorcan soup bread which is thinly cut, salt and pepper. The dish is prepared in a traditional Mediterranean greixonera (earthenware dish) and served piping hot.

Although not on the menu card in many tourist restaurants it can be commonly found in local establishments in many pueblos and often included on a menu del dia.

Lechona Asada a las Hierbas con patatitas doradas

The lechona is a typical celebratory dish that can be found throughout Spain. Here on the Balearic Islands there is a particular breed of pig that is used, because they are bread and fattened naturally either in the mountains or on the few farms that specialize in free-range pig husbandry.

One such producer can be found in the northeast of the island, at Rancho Grande. The owner specializes in the breeding of Porc Negre. It is an indigenous species of pig from the islands with a particular skin type that gives it the ability to withstand the different challenges the Balearic climate can throw at it. The pigs live in the open air all year round foraging for acorns, figs, and fruit from the extensive orchards that Rancho Grande has. This gives them a quality that cannot be said of any Mass-produced animals.

Rancho Grande has its own restaurant that is open daily and we recommend booking in advance. They have spectacular views over the countryside and are only a few minutes’ drive from the beach at Son Serra De Marina. The Ranch also proved an island-wide service to villas and private houses. In this case, the Lechona is cooked in one of their wood-fired ovens and transported to you ready to eat. This service is quite popular for celebrations and especially in the summer months for clients who have big families in villas etc. As to prepare a full Lechon can be an all-day affair and let’s be honest who wants to spend all day cooking on a full day of their summer holidays.

Fideos Marinera

This classic Spanish comfort food is a warming and a healthy way to enjoy seafood without breaking the bank. This is a farmhouse method of combining local seafood and pasta noodles in a tasty soup. Ingredients are Spanish noodles that are typically made with durum wheat and are quite similar to Italian noodles. Onion, peppers, garlic, Tomato paste, Calamar, Prawn, Clams, Langoustine, mussels, White wine, olive oil, and saffron. Sometimes the saffron can be substituted by a less expensive alternative.

The chef uses their alchemy to convert these ingredients into a magnificent tribute to the local seafood and can be enjoyed and many local restaurants and can often be found on a good Menu de Dia, a real taste of the sea.

A drop of good stuff: Palo and Herbias to keep the doctor away

For the last 20 years, the village of Selva at the foot of the Tramuntana Mountains has been holding a fair that is dedicated to the magical and mysterious qualities of herbs and plants. Each year, the Fira de Ses Herbes celebrates the olive leaf, rosemary, orange flower, the fern, estepa Joana, and arrayan. Estepa Joana is St. John’s Wort, while arrayan is derived from an Arabic word for the aromatic plant, and in Selva, this refers to myrtle.

Only one of these six is, strictly speaking, a herb and that’s rosemary. The word ‘herbes’ does therefore have a rather broader meaning, but what these six all have in common is their health-giving properties. Myrtle is beneficial in fighting pain and fever and it is the plant that takes center-stage at the Selva fair. Village folk head off from 7.30 am to pick myrtle. When they return, it is distilled as myrtle water.

The Catalan word herbes is the Spanish hierbas and Hierbas liqueur is to be found in abundance in Mallorca’s bars and supermarkets. Primarily a digestif, the liqueur is said to originate from the sixteenth century, but it is probably older. There is evidence to suggest that monks in medieval times were making it as a digestive aid.

Hierbas

Hierbas is essentially a Mallorcan invention. It is an aniseed-flavored liqueur made mainly by extracting the aromas of various plants. In times gone by, it combined pretty much whatever was available – rosemary, fennel, juniper, orange, and lemon peel, and so on. It wasn’t until the end of the nineteenth century that formulas and standards started to apply, and this came with the founding of various distilleries. One of these produces the Túnel brand, a name synonymous with Hierbas.

Palo

Palo, the original Spanish name for quinine was also originally conceived as a medicinal aid. From the seventeenth century, its principal use was as a remedy for malaria, which was once a serious problem in Mallorca’s coastal wetland areas. It contains quinine and gentian, both of which are traditionally used for malaria. Palo de Mallorca originated in Mallorca, yet its original ingredients – gentian and cinchona (which yields quinine) – were imported from South America. Locally-produced concentrated sugars from grapes, figs, and carobs were added and took away most of the astringent flavour. Palo, a dark liqueur, is now enjoyed in the Balearics before dinner to whet the appetite.

Over time, the quinine and gentian content was reduced. The medicinal properties of Palo have long since been superseded by its more pleasant taste and alcoholic content. In Mallorca, Palo liqueur is the aperitif to the Hierbas digestif. We recommend to try both during your stay in Mallorca in May

Mallorca’s colourful tourism history

Tourism in Mallorca was once for a select and wealthy few. It is sometimes said that tourism started here in the late nineteenth century when the Austrian Archduke Louis Salvador invited intellectual friends to stay at his various properties, which included Miramar in Valldemossa.

In the early twentieth century, these tourists mingled with figures from the world of the arts – poets, novelists, and painters. El Terreno, then just a suburb of Palma, became a popular place for visitors. The city was naturally at the heart of this tourism. In time, coastal parts of the island also started to open up to tourism.

Cala Ratjada was a summer retreat for Mallorca’s rich, none more so than the “infamous” banker, Joan March Ordinas. You can find a branch of the Banca March in every town, set up by the multi-millionaire businessman from Santa Margalida. His first business involved smuggling tobacco into Spain from North Africa. During World War I, he became rich by trading with both the Allies and Axis. It was the beginning of a very colourful career. The March family are among the most wealthy people in Spain today. A palace was built for him at Sa Torre Cega. The palace and gardens are open to visitors.

Soller, in the northwest, and its port attracted French visitors, a reflection of a historical sea-trading association. Pollensa and Puerto Pollensa, meanwhile, started to appeal to the British and the Americans.

Puerto Pollensa and north of Mallorca

This was in part due to the reputation which Pollensa had acquired as a center for painters, whose works promoted Mallorca and especially the northern region of the Tramuntana Mountains. They came from Catalonia, from Central America and South America to paint. The Pollensa ‘school’ was a term adopted by a friend of some of these painters – a journalist called Pedro Ferrer. There were also some hotels, such as the Miramar Hotel, which opened in 1912. But it was developments in the 1920s that really put Puerto Pollensa on the map. Two more hotels – the Hotel Formentor and Illa d’Or – opened at the end of that decade, but in 1924 there was an occurrence that the tourism authorities of the time could not have planned.

In 1924, the British Royal Navy in a major show of force combined both the Atlantic and Mediterranean fleets off Pollensa. Battleships, including the mighty battlecruiser Hood, cruisers, destroyers, submarines, and support vessels all dropped anchor in the Bay of Pollensa in 1924. Enthralled with the beauty of Pollensa, many of the Royal Navy sailors returned to holiday in Mallorca and they spread the word of Mallorca’s beauty worldwide.

In 1932, Agatha Christie came to Mallorca for the first time. There was nowhere to stay in Palma, so she took a taxi, intending to book into the Hotel Formentor. As she passed through Puerto Pollensa, she realized that this was where she wanted to stay. While at the Illa d’Or, she wrote, ‘Problem at Pollensa Bay’.

The month of January can best be described as a little depressing in the British Isles and northern Europe in general. Christmas is over, the new year celebrations are but memories and the days are short and generally wet and cold. Mallorca, on the other hand, has much to offer for a short break. There are surprisingly many things to see and do in Mallorca in January. So prepare yourself a cup of green tea, hot chocolate or amazing wine and enjoy our expert´s guide about Mallorca in January.

Mallorca Weather in January

The weather in Mallorca in January is mild and occasionally chilly. During the day it’s recommended to spend time outdoors and take advantage of what sunshine there is to be had. With approximately 9 hours of daylight the days are still relatively long and the nights can be chilly and occasionally cold.

Mallorca is not hot in January, There may be days you can go to the beach but these are few and far between. And sunbathing is for the adventurous spirit. On average, the daytime temperature is 13 degrees. At noon it can reach 17-20 degrees, and at night time 5-8 degrees and on a rare occasion freezing.

Let’s be clear, it’s wintertime and nothing can get away from that. That been said on a clear sunny day you may be fooled into thinking it’s summer, but a few minutes in swim shorts on the beach will set your thinking straight. The water is cold and atmospheric humidity is such that even with a light breeze you will feel the chill.

In your suitcase to travel to Mallorca in January, you will need light trousers and jumpers for during the day. It’s better to be prepared for all eventualities, layer up and if you need to take something off or vice versa then you can. Toeless sandals won’t be necessary.

Rain is guaranteed in January, and sometimes snow. The average snowfall days are 2 days per year in January. There will be no skiing though as the snowfall in mainly in the mountain region and it does not last long.

What to See and Do in Mallorca in January

January is a busy month in Spain. In northern Europe Christmas is celebrated on the 25th of December and whilst this holiday is celebrated in Spain the main event does not happen until the 6th of January. On this day the 3 kings arrive and that is the special day for the children regarding present giving, etc. There are also many fiestas and local celebrations that we will mention.

What can I do with children during January?

As previously mentioned the celebration of the arrival of the three kings has to be the highlight of the month. If the kids have had a visit from Santa Claus in their home country then it would not be fair to forget the visit of these three wise fellows on your visit to Mallorca. The excitement will be clear as all the children are well aware of what will await them on the morning of the 6th of January.

What are the three kings (Los Reyes Magos) and where can I see them?

The three kings or the three wise men are the fabled magi who traveled to Bethlehem to find the baby Jesus on the feast of the epiphany which is celebrated 12 days after Christmas on the 6th of January. The Spanish custom is that the children leave their shoes by the door and the kings will leave the presents inside the shoes and bigger presents nearby of course. On the previous evening in most villages of Spain, there will be a procession, and the three kings Melchior, Caspar, and Balthazar arrive (usually on horseback) to much fanfare and excitement.

If you have children it is a must-see as the atmosphere is electric with all the little faces and their anticipation. Afterward, there will be liquid refreshment but usually not too late as bedtime beckons. As mentioned most villages and towns have their procession. It’s not advertised as the grapevine knows about this but best to check with a local beforehand as sometimes presents are handed out by the kings. It would be an unfortunate miscalculation to make that error if you just show up with children in tow.

The fiestas of St Antoni in Pollenca

The feast of Saint Anthony, the patron saint of animals and lost things are celebrated in January. All villages of the islands have their parties with great bonfires to celebrate these dates with correfocs and demons and fogerons etc. Many locals use this as an opportunity to get their pets blessed. Also and this can be a curious spectacle outside the local church. All manner of four-legged and other breeds of companions are turning up for the consecration.

The celebrations in Pollenca and its port are a highlight of the social calendar with processions and many interesting events. The festivities begin the previous weekend when the population sets up camp in Ternelles forest to choose a pine tree. After a torrada and much merriment the tree is transported back to the town and taken to the placa where its hoisted into place. The following weekend the townsfolk throw another big party and see who can climb to the top of the 20 meters greased pine tree first to liberate the waiting cockrel.

A visit to the foundation of Yannick and Ben Yackober in Alcudia

The foundation of Yannick and Ben Yackober is to be found near the town of Alcudia within the museum of Sa Bassa Blanca. The foundation was founded in 1993 by the couple and with philanthropic contributions from the banker Georges Coulon Karlweiss. Highlights of the visit include a collection of paintings of children from European royalty dating between the 16th and 19th centuries. These paintings were said to be commissioned by the respective families to be sent to their counterparts to arrange marriages. It was the norm at that time so to ensure the continuation of the respective royal families.

The main building which is a spectacular white villa was designed by Egyptian architect Hassan Fathy and made use of an existing farmhouse and is an outstanding feature of the landscape. It is the only example of a building from this architect to be found in western Europe.

Mallorca’s traditional baked bread

Traditional bread-making in Mallorca is enjoying renewed status that celebrates the island’s traditional baking techniques and the wheat grown here. As a result, there is a variety of beautiful bread available, the production of which is centered on the traditional peasant culture based on the xeixa grain that was introduced to Mallorca by the Romans. Highly resistant to drought, the xeixa type of wheat flourished, which resulted in the salt-free ‘pa de pagès’ (farmer or peasant bread) and ‘pa Moreno’. It is the brown version, which is considered to be essential for the making of pa amb oli (bread and oil).

A love for pa amb Oli

Combining olive oil and bread may well have been occurring for centuries, but there was an ingredient missing, and that was the tomato. It was the Spanish who introduced the tomato to Europe from Mexico. Although the Aztecs had been eating tomatoes and using them in cooking with few apparent ill-effects, a European view was that they could be poisonous. Indeed they could be if they absorbed lead contained in pewter plates, which were used in Europe. The highly acidic tomato absorbed the lead. Once this was realized, the tomato started to gain greater acceptance.

At some unknown point in history, someone in Catalonia hit on the idea of adding tomato to the oil and bread. Smearing tomato, apart from adding more flavour, also softened the bread. It might seem an obvious thing to have done, but there is no known written reference to what the Catalans called ‘pa amb tomàquet’ before 1884.

Pa amb Oli, plus tomato, is, therefore, a comparatively recent innovation, though it has created all kinds of culinary inventions. Very simple though it is, pa amb oil has been embraced by the world of gastronomy in Mallorca where it has been elevated to high culinary art.

Pa Amb Oli World Championship

In 2019, the first Pa Amb Oli World Championship was held in Palma during the four-day pa amb oli fair. The judges included a Michelin-starred chef, the president of the Traditional Bakers’ Association, and the president of the Mallorca Olive Oil DO regulatory council. The winning pa amb oli was prepared by a restaurant from Ibiza and the award was for pa amb oli with Formentera dried fish.

Ramallet tomato

The type of tomato used for pa amb oli is considered to be as important as the type of bread and olive oil used. The ‘ramallet’ has the distinction of being the essential tomato. In Mallorca, the ramallet tomato is so important it even has its own fair held in Maria de la Salut in August.

Gardens of Mallorca

The Alfabia estate

The Alfabia estate in Bunyola offers one of the finest examples of landscape gardening in Mallorca. The estate dates from the Moors era (711 AD -1492). A wonder in ancient design and irrigation techniques, the gardens are the most beautiful in Mallorca.

The original landscaping was commanded by Benhabet, who was the Muslim lord of Pollensa (Bullensa), Inca (Inkan), and Alfabia, and also, the Governor of the whole of Mallorca outside Palma. Alfabia was his residence until the conquest by Jaume I in 1229. It is a fantastic treat for the eyes and senses and is well worth a visit.

There are vestiges of the first gardens, which benefited from the Arabian talent for irrigation, something that is evident elsewhere in the Tramuntana Mountains. The development of the gardens over the centuries has introduced features such as the water lily pond and the pergola walkway with its water jets, while the residence was influenced by architectural styles from medieval times (Gothic) through to the Baroque.

Raixa Finca

Lying only five kilometers from the wonders of Alfabia estate is Raixa Finca. A one-time Moorish farmstead, the main development was overseen by Antoni Despuig I Dameto, Cardinal Despuig. In the late eighteenth century, he built a grand mansion-villa in a neoclassical style. The principal house had been burnt to the ground during the “Germanies” (Brotherhoods) revolt between 1521 and 1523. The gardens feature fabulous terraces, a water fountain, an orange garden, a folly, a large pond, a grotto, and a staircase that is dedicated to the god Apollo.

The Raixa Finca was declared an asset in the cultural interest in 1993. In 2002 Council of Mallorca and the National Parks Foundation took over the estate and have preserved the amazing grounds and buildings.

Marivent Palace

The Marivent Palace in Palma is the Spanish Royal Family’s residence in Mallorca. The family comes to Mallorca twice a year – for Easter and summer holidays in late July/early August. The palace is owned by the Balearic Government, this being a legacy of it having been donated to the former provincial authority after its original owner died in 1963.

He was Ioannes Saridakis (referred to in Mallorca as Joan Saridakis). An Egyptian painter, he amassed a fortune as a mining engineer in Chile and commissioned the building of the palace in 1923. It took only two years to complete.

The provincial authority went against the wishes of the Saridakis estate that the palace should be an art museum freely open to the public. In 1973 (10 years before the Balearic government came into existence), the palace was made available to the crown – the former king, Juan Carlos, and Sofia, who is now the Queen mother. The art treasures were removed. The public no longer had access to the palace itself or to the gardens, but with the agreement of King Felipe, the gardens were opened to the public in 2017. They contain some 40 different plant species, most of them native to Mallorca, and sculptures by Joan Miró, which have been gifted by the Miró estate.The gardens are open all year except during the periods when the family is in residence.

Deia and its famous residents

The picturesque village of Deia lies on the west coast of Mallorca about an hour’s drive and 30km from the city of Palma. This mountain village has become famous throughout the years for its many famous foreign residents including film-stars writers and musicians. The village dates from the Moorish period and this is demonstrated by its name which is taken from Arabic, ad daia, and means place of residence or village.The moors planted the hillsides with terraced gardens and these well-maintained terraces can still be seen today although they have been replanted with olive trees and orange groves.

Useful information for visit in Deia

Parking in Deia is difficult at the best of times so January may be one of the best times to visit as at least there will not be too much competition for the limited parking there is. This is by the wish of the locals and the town council to keep visitors to a minimum.

The main attraction is the village charm and the chance to rub shoulders with the rich and famous. Previous residents include Robert Graves – the author of I Claudius- and Michael Douglas who has a home in the Estate of Son Marroig.

On a sunny day, it’s worth visiting Cala Deia, one of the most secluded calas on the island. In wintertime, it will be unusual to find the café open but it’s worth to take a picnic and enjoy the spectacular views and the fresh air.

What to See and Do in Mallorca in December

There are lots of things to see and do on the island of Mallorca in December. The main tourist season has finished about a month ago and the locals are enjoying their welcome holiday time. Here we will list some of them off the beaten track gems and family days out.

What can I do with children during December?

Here we will outline some of our favorite activities to do in December. Most are off the beaten tourist track and will need a hire car or some independent modes of transport as public transport is not as frequent in the winter months.

A visit to Soller and the modernist museum of Can Prunera.

Soller is a hidden paradise on the west coast of Mallorca. Nestled in a citrus lined valley it is only accessible from Palma by its tunnel or a hair-raising drive with over 50 hairpin bends on the Serra de Alfabia. The tunnel is now free so unless you are an adrenalin junkie or a cyclist we recommend you take the tunnel.

Soller - history of oranges production

On arrival to the valley, you will be welcomed to an awe-inspiring view of orange and lemon groves. They adorn the spectacular terraces with the magnificent Serra de Tramuntana framing the entire vista. Descend to the valley and you will be transported back in time to an era where electric tram travel was the norm and the main source of income for this sleepy town was its fruit and specifically its oranges. So much so that in the early nineteenth century Sollers oranges became famous throughout Spain and Europe.

Soller became an important exporter and its sons and daughters became important businesspeople on the island and very importantly in the south of Spain where Soller gained significant influence. Cataluna and France became important customers, because of the improved trade links such as the Soller train and improved maritime transport.

Can Prunera Museum

Many of the wonderful buildings that are seen in Soller today are fruits of this profitable trade from two centuries ago. One of these buildings is the modernist museum of Can Prunera. Although interestingly the profits did not originate in Soller, in 1865 a catastrophic infection devasted the orange trees in the valley and this led to the ruination of many of the local exporters. These families were forced to emigrate and after making their fortunes in countries such as France and South America many returned and one of these families constructed the Building of Can Prunera.

Prunera in Spanish means prune tree and the original owners were prune farmers and this gives the name. Today can Prunera has been restored to its original glory, and houses many original artworks from artists such as Juli Ramis and Picasso. As well as many examples of art nouveau. a visit to Can Prunera will give the visitor an idea of what life was like for the nouveau riche of this Epoque in the valley of Soller. There are also interesting gardens that are a quiet and tranquil place to contemplate.

A visit to the microbrewery of Alaro and its castle

One of our favorite days out in the winter is a walk to the castle of Alaro. This medieval structure that stands majestically above the Village of Alaro dates from the tenth century and is free to visit. The structure occupies a defensive position and according to legend survived a siege of over eight years. During the conquest of Jaime 1 of Catalunya, many of the Muslim residents of Medina Mayurqa (Palma) retreated to the mountain castles such as Alaro.

Other castles include Castell de Santueri y Castell del Rei in Pollenca. The castle lies 7.5 km from the village and its possible to park in the village and walk to the castle but most opt to drive the bumpy road to the restaurant es Verger and begin from there. After finding a parking space at es Verger it is about an hour to the top following the rough track and finally the steps to the main gats of the fortress.

Many opt for lunch at Es verger where all are welcome and reservations are not possible, on the other hand, its also possible to visit the Local brewery of Forastera located in the village. They have a taproom with several craft beers that are hand made in Mallorca.

A visit to the medieval castle in Capdepera

The municipality of Capdepera is located on the east coast of Mallorca and has one of the largest castles on the Island. Construction began in the fourth century and was originally constructed by the Romans and then the Moors and finally reconstructed in its present form in the fourteenth century.

The fortress overlooks the sea between the islands of Mallorca and Menorca and it was here that the treaty of Capdepera was signed. It was giving king James of Aragon control of the nearby smaller island without a drop of spilled blood. Today the castle houses an interesting museum and is well worth a visit, several hours can be spent and it’s a fun morning out for all ages.

Christmas in Mallorca

As Christmas is fast approaching the days are getting shorter and the population of Mallorca is starting to get into the Christmas spirit. Whilst the weather may not be as harsh as many northern countries there is still a chill in the air and the illumination of the buildings in Palma only adds to that special Christmas feeling.

Normally the Christmas illuminations can be seen throughout Palma with the main lights to be seen in Placa Cort and the street of Jaime 3 as well as the Placa de la Reina. We recommend to visit the lights and this can be combined with a bit of Christmas shopping in the many small boutiques and also in the bigger department stores like El Corte Ingles.

Spotlight on local villages

Inca & Lloseta

Inca was and still is, the town most recognized for leather products, boots, and shoes. But it was not the only town to reap the dividends. One other was Lloseta. The footwear industry in Lloseta began rather humbly at the end of the nineteenth century, but by the 1930s it was the town’s principal industry. So economically significant was Lloseta – where mining (in the early years following the Civil War) and cement production (from the 1960s) were also major industries – that between 1900 and 1970 it had the fourth highest population growth of all places in Mallorca.

A lack of investment, especially in mechanization, was to be a cause of the decline of the Lloseta shoe industry. The tourism boom was another. Workers found alternative employment in construction and the hospitality sectors. One brand that survived and has thrived is Bestard, famous for its walking and mountain boots. The traditional manufacture of shoes in Lloseta is now celebrated each year at the shoe fair in June.

The march of Mallorca’s shoe industry

Spain’s neutrality during the First World War opened up several business opportunities for Mallorca. The Trasmediterranea shipping line was founded. Ships for war support were built in Mallorca, and the island’s footwear industry enjoyed a boom. Indeed, the French Army marched in Mallorcan boots.

This industry had been important to the economy before the Great War. In 1900, almost 14% of Mallorca’s manufacturing industry had been footwear and leather products. The main center for production was Palma, but demand was to see production diversify geographically. This chiefly occurred in the region which remains today the one most associated with footwear production on the island: Raiguer.

This region had started to become a center of production in the nineteenth century. This owed much to Antonio Fluxá. He went to England to learn about new methods of shoemaking manufacture. When he returned, he established the Lottusse brand in 1877. It was to be almost a hundred years later (1975) that the famous Camper brand became truly established. Notably, one of its marques – ‘Camper, Boots & Shoes, 1877’ – comes from the same year.

Binnisalem and its wine trradition

Wine has been produced in Mallorca since as far back as Roman times. Pliny the Elder, writing in the first century AD, observed that Mallorcan wines matched those of Italy. Many centuries later and Mallorca was to enjoy a golden age. When the phylloxera bug ravaged French vineyards from the 1860s, Mallorca stepped in. There were some 75,000 acres devoted to vines and wine was exported to France. But so as not to put off French drinkers, it was relabelled as French wine. However, this success was short-lived. Phylloxera arrived on the island in 1891 and it had a similarly devastating impact.

The plague had been eradicated by the time one of Mallorca’s oldest producers, Macià Batle, was introducing new labeling in 1913. Based in Santa Maria del Camí, the company was founded in 1856. Nowadays, Santa Maria is part of the Binissalem Designation of Origin (DO) regulatory council, a mark of quality that applies strict standards to the types of grape grown, to their harvest, and the production. There is a second DO, Pla I Llevant, which covers the eastern area of the island, and another mark – Vi de la Terra Mallorca.

Binissalem is looked upon as the center of the island’s wine trade. It was here that Bodegas José L Ferrer was established in 1931. The following year, Vins Nadal was founded – also in Binissalem. The oldest wine producer is in Consell, a neighbour of Binissalem. Bodegas Ribas can trace its history back to 1711.

Since the 1980s, Mallorca has undergone a wine renaissance. New vineyards have been developed and new producers have emerged. The emphasis has been on the ’boutique’ bodega – relatively small scale production of high quality and typified by innovative labeling. Meanwhile, the older and larger producers have gone from strength to strength.

Vermar Wine Fair

Binissalem holds an annual wine fair as part of the village’s Vermar grape harvest fiestas in September. This focuses on Binissalem wines, while the wine fair Pollensa in May attracts bodegas from all over the island. Also in May, the Binissalem DO holds a week of Mallorca Wine Days that embraces the five centers for the DO – Binissalem itself, Consell, Santa Maria, Santa Eugenia, and Sencelles. Wine-tastings are now a common feature of island fiestas and fairs, and special events – often combining wine with art, music, and gastronomy – have sprung up.

Grape production

Compared with the heyday of the nineteenth century, the scale of grape production is low: some six percent of those 75,000 acres that were helping to supply France. Pressures from other crops and development have diminished the opportunities. At the same time, they have meant that there is a premium on quality, which includes grape varieties that are indigenous to Mallorca, such as Callet, Manto Negro, and Prensal.

Mallorcan wine also uses grapes like Chardonnay and Syrah, but the attention paid to the indigenous varieties is reflected in the fact there is a vine nursery devoted to them. This is in Biniagual, a hamlet within Binissalem. The grafts were until recently being done in Navarre on the mainland.

Let's visit the caves of Campanet

Let's go to the beach

It may not be summertime or even that sunny but Mallorca in November is the perfect time to build sandcastles. There is nothing better than a morning of building ramparts and defensive structures on the many deserted beaches that Mallorca has to offer.

How to build a sandcastle?

The main ingredients for a sandcastle are, of course, sand and water. The objective should be to build the best castle on the beach! This will not be difficult in November, as there won’t be much competition although unfortunately this logic cant be applied in August. First, you need to dig a good-sized hole, this will give you enough building material to get started and it also helps to fill this hole with water or a willing parent just for a bit of added fun.

The main features of a medieval sand castle include walls, towers, ramparts and gates, and flags. Combine all these different structures and you will have a perfect castle ready for any enemy attack. After you have your hole dug, enlist a willing family member to fill it with water. The water will make the sand stick and this will be advantageous at a later stage.

When building castles Big is better so the bigger it is the better it will look, this will also trump any design flaws in the eyes of any passing random sand castle judges. The next step is to make the foundations by stamping your pile into a solid base. This will give you a level surface for your structure, then add the previously mentioned features, and for the added effect we recommend a moat.

At the beginning of November, the mountain village of Puigpunyent hosts its annual beer festival. It is hosted by a local craft brewery called la Forastera, based in the village of Alaro. For anyone who knows about craft beers, they are an art in their own right. Tastings are the highlight of the festivities and many different types of beers can be found on offer. Pollenca´s Autumn fair

As Autumn is harvest time, the village of Pollenca hosts a special fair dedicated to the artisans and agriculture of the local area. This fair is one of the largest of the locality and the narrow cobbled streets are busy with many stalls offering hand made products. On the outskirts of town, there can be found demonstrations of local skills and activities that require open spaces such as falconry demonstrations and exhibitions of indigenous farm animals. Dijous Bo - Inca´s greatest fair

Dijous Bo (good Thursday) is the most eagerly awaited event of the Raiguer area of Mallorca. The fair is normally held on the third Thursday of November. The fair has its roots in the agriculture of the local area, but over the years it has evolved into a completely different attraction with all kinds of unique exhibitions and attractions. The previous Wednesday known locally as Dimercres Bo (good Wednesday) is also very popular with lots of stalls selling street food and nightlife that usually goes on until the following day.

Not only is Sa Pobla the ‘potato capital’ and rice-growing heartland of Mallorca, but it is also home to many of the island’s fiesta traditions.

As well as it is known for its popular carbohydrate produce, Sa Pobla has given Mallorca many of its fiesta favorites. Demons and the January fiestas for Sant Antoni Abat have their origins in fourteenth-century Sa Pobla. The original Sant Antoni church was built in the middle of that century, and the fiestas date from the same era.

Sa Pobla was also active in reviving traditions that had fallen by the wayside. This halt was partly because of the Franco regime, but more because of the arrival of tourism, migration from rural areas, and the onset of ’modern’ times. There was a cultural rediscovery in the 1970s, and Sa Pobla played its part with the reintroduction of instruments, such as the xeremia bagpipe and the peculiar ximbomba, and of course the demons who run with fire at fiesta time.

Sa Pobla, Majorca - Potato capital

The ‘potato capital’ of Mallorca, Sa Pobla is known especially for its new potato exports. The cultivation of spuds didn’t start to take off until the mid-nineteenth century. The potato itself having originally made its way to Mallorca via Menorca right at the very end of the eighteenth century. The British had cultivated the popular root vegetable during their occupation of Menorca.

Farmers in Sa Pobla took advantage of local marshy soil conditions, though initially there was resistance against the potato for human consumption. It was believed that a vegetable grown in the soil had to be bad for you.

Sa Pobla - Rice export

Sa Pobla’s strong association with rice has a much longer history than the potato in that it was grown in the Albufera wetlands by the Muslims. There was a thriving export trade in those medieval days, with rice from Albufera being sold in the markets of Flanders. Following the 1229 conquest of Mallorca, the production came to a halt. The Christian invaders considered rice to be Muslim food. They also questioned its health benefits, given how and where it was grown.

It wasn’t until the turn of the twentieth century that there was a genuine attempt at rice-growing on a significant scale. Experts were brought in from Valencia (where they knew about rice for paella), but the initiative failed when there was serious flooding in 1906. Thereafter, there was some growth, but production was insignificant until the 1990s. Bomba short-grain rice (integral to delicious ‘Arroz brut’) took off in such a way that annual production is now around 90 tonnes.

The village of Sa Pobla hosts its annual rice fair in November, with the star of the show being the Arroz Bomba which is typical of this área. A variety of gastronomic events can be enjoyed and here you can sample local dishes such as paella or Arroz brut.

For those more adventurous who like to disconnect completely from urbanization there is a walk from the village of Pollenca to the Sanctuary of Lluc, although this is a full day undertaking. Leaving the village take the road Ma-10 towards Lluc, passing Km 5 you will find a bus stop and it’s here you take a left turn. The walk to Lluc is approximately 12 kilometers and is quite an easy hike and for all abilities including children.

After reaching the monastery you can enjoy lunch at one of the restaurants with Mallorcan cuisine. Almond Blossom Hiking in Mallorca

In Mallorca there are around 4 million of almond trees, and the blossom is in February, and it is spectacular. The white flower of the almonds stands out in the mallorcan countryside, and February is a perfect month to do an almond blossom route in Mallorca countryside.

A recommended route is in the Raiguer area, the area situated at the foot of the mountain area, between the Tramuntana area and the inland area. Around the villages of Santa Maria, Binissalem, Consell, Alaro and Lloseta you can see many almonds in flower. Alaró Castle Hiking Trial

Cala Figuera Hiking Trial

For sure TOP Beach Hike Spot. This destination is popular by all possible ways: boat, jet ski, llaut, bike, and also walking. Our recommendation is to get to the Formentor Beach parking by car and then follow the road by bike, bus or walking. Remember! During the summer season there are transfer restrictions on Formentor Penisula for cars. You can also get to the hike starting point by bus, which goes to the end of Cap Formentor. Cala Figuera will welcome you with its crystal clear water and amazing views of the coast on the way there. As already mentioned there are many hiking trials in Mallorca, but those which are leading you to the beach are one of the most popular ideas, especially in summer.

Hike is on medium level, but possible to make also with bigger children. Nice idea to spend a day in nature with friends. Just remember that it is not a guarded beach. Also, no shops around so water supplies and food need to be taken with you. This is a Top destination in Mallorca and for sure worth the time and the effort.

Walk from Puerto Pollensa to Cala Boquer

Puerto Pollensa is a lovely village in the north of Mallorca. Choosen many times as great location to spend your family holidays in Mallorca, Balearic Islands. Ermita de Bonany

Very nice and easy 1 hour route, which all your family members will enjoy. Up on this 315 m hill you will find the monastery, hostel, nice picnic space and lovely views of Mallorcan cities like Petra or Binissalem. The 1 hour route begin in Petra town.
