As awesome as the bike is as a way to get around, sometimes human muscles don't quite pack enough oomph to deal with hilly terrain. Tour de France cyclists might see steep inclines as a challenge, but my mother would welcome a little assistance... That's why it's such a great idea for San Francisco - far from a flat city - to add electric bikes to its City CarShare fleet (a local nonprofit).

While many Angelenos would prefer to commute to and from work via bicycle they simply don't feel safe to do so on it's car-centric streets. Solution? Organize a themed dress group ride!

Theme bicycle rides are all the rage here in So Cal. From San Diego all the way up to Santa Barbara, San Francisco and the states capital of Sacramento motorists will come upon groups of colorfully dressed cyclists touring art galleries, museums, parks, beaches, gourmet eateries and wine and cheese shops day and night.

Many theme rides are "come as you are" while some invite participants to dress up or attend in costumes.

Revelers enjoy eclectic music from bicycle "sound bikes" which are custom sound systems on child/pet trailers attached to the rear of a bike. All have a good time. (con'td) ...

To participate in a theme ride call your local bicycle shop, many offer free group rides or Google the Internet. Or, better yet, start one of your own.

My favorite group rides are hosted by the Dutch style bike shop The Flying Pigeon in Los Angeles,CA. They sale and rent Dutch bikes for rides. It's a great way to thoroughly test a bike before purchase and to experience the joy of bicycling in the safety of a large group.

Visit The Flying Pigeon website and click on the "Shop Rides" tab at the top of the page. Parking is ample, or the Goldline train station, Heritage Square, is conveniently located two blocks from the shop. Try the Get Some Dim Sum ride or the Brewery Ride day rides for starters. If you want a romantic night ride full of art, coffee shops, music, gourmet food trucks and plenty of local colour then the Spoke 'N Art ride is for you.

It's that time of year again when thousands of school leavers, pack their bedrooms into the back of their parents cars and head off to a random city for 3 years studying and partying.
But what the best way to get round once your parents have driven away? Cycling of course, it's a no brainer... Not only is it free but you will soon become the interesting, quirky one amongst your peers for turning up to lectures like a young Iris Murdoch...

A prime example is the wonderful Lilly Cole who does interesting and quirky exceptionally well. Throughout her 3 years at Cambridge she was often spotted cycling from lecture to lecture by bike. From her attire it's clear that she was a year round cyclist too... go Lily!

A picture is worth a thousand words.

I love how both lanes are full. The right lane is full of people sitting in cars in traffic with break lights on, the left lanes shows three to four times as many people on bicycles riding traffic-free during Friday night rush hour. ;O)

Come out for the cyclisious fun this Friday evening.

Ride meets at: 6:00 p.m.
Leaves at: 7:30 p.m.
Where: Corner of Wilshire and Western. This is the end of the Purple-line subway. Bikes are welcome on Metro subway and buses.

Or, Take the Redline subway to Wilshire/Vermont and cycle to Western on Wilshire.

Ciclavia expands route for next ride.

Due to the overwhelming success of Los Angele's first two Ciclavia last October and April the route for the next ride will be expanded to include the Fashion District, Exposition Park and Central Ave. in South DTLA.

Also being considered in the route expansion are Chinatown, parts of the articulately rich Boyle Heights neighborhood and El Pueblo.
