Grizzly Bear and Beach House to play London Roundhouse

The fantastic Grizzly Bear will continue their current run of success with their largest London headline show to date next March at the Roundhouse.

Grizzly Bear released Yellow House in 2006. It was a slow, steady and stunning ride—boundless in scope and elegance. Given the album's otherworldly charm and staying power, it's hard to believe three years have gone by. There is an unbelievable clarity of sound and vision to new album Veckatimest: vocals (a duty now shared by all band members) are sharper and more complex, arrangements are tighter, production is more venturous and lyrics more affecting. Having opened the creative dialogue at such an early stage, Grizzly Bear was able to realize these 12 songs together as a band, making it their most collaboratively compositional album to date.

This yielded an unexpected mix of material that feels more confident, mature, focused—and most of all, dynamic. Veckatimest is an album of the highest highs and lowest lows—an unbelievably diverse collection of songs that celebrates the strength of each band member, and the power of the whole. It was well worth the wait.

A Special Edition of Veckatimest will be released on November 2nd on Warp Records, adding 7 live session tracks and a photobooklet to this acclaimed album.

Tickets for this special show taking place on Saturday 13th March 2010 are priced at £18.50 + booking fee and are on sale now, see below for info:

Fuck Buttons New Album & UK Tour

Fuck Buttons burst back into action with the release of their blistering new album, ‘Tarot Sport’, in early October 2009. The album will be preceded by the release of a single, ‘Surf Solar’, on 14th September 2009 (both on ATP Recordings) and by a full UK tour with regional dates in September and a headline London show at Heaven in Charing Cross on 27th October.

Fuck Buttons, the duo of Andrew Hung and Benjamin John Power, recorded ‘Tarot Sport’ at Rotters Golf Club Studio in London with the legendary DJ, producer and remixer Andrew Weatherall on production duties. The results of this pairing are astounding. ‘Tarot Sport’ is an album in which Fuck Buttons continue to refine, craft, explore and develop the experimental aesthetic of last year’s critically acclaimed debut album, ‘Street Horrrsing’. However, they also take proceedings to another level through a combination of their own ambitious aims and the application of Weatherall’s clear-sighted, rule-defying precision and attention to sonic detail. The seven tracks on the album reflect a new-found complexity of sound and a more layered depth to the recordings; recordings that pushed everyone to the limit of their abilities. As Power says, “I think it sounds a lot thicker than our previous work….our brains kind of went into meltdown”.

The first single to be taken from the album is ‘Surf Solar’, the powerful but mesmerizing opening track from ‘Tarot Sport’. It displays an attitude of emotional urgency and striving that is prevalent in a lot of Fuck Buttons’ music. Hung puts it like this; “Without a conscious effort, this track acts as a bridge between ‘Street Horrrsing’ and ‘Tarot Sport’….it has an emotion attached to it that is unique to us: one of anxiety. It’s an urgent track”. As always, Fuck Buttons remain faithful to the idea of hope as an inspiration.

TOUR DATES with support from Zun Zun Egui on all dates except Glasgow and London

SEPTEMBER

Moose Factory Presents: Katherine Blake and Nick Marsh + Imprint + Bleeding Heart Narrative, April 30 @ The George Tavern (020 7790 1763)

Moose Factory brings you the best in unusual music and this time we are extremely excited about presenting Katherine Blake and Nick Marsh with support from Imprint and Bleeding Heart Narrative on April 30 at the George Tavern, 373 Commercial Road, Stepney Green (also close to Limehouse, Mile End and Whitechapel stations) for FREE! Doors at 8pm.

Katherine Blake is a legend and we are so pleased to have her perform at our night. For those of you who do not know, she was the lead vocalist of the infamous (and Moose Factory favourite) experimental goth-madrigal outfit Miranda Sex Garden and, more recently, musical director/founder of the choral group Mediaeval Baebes. She has recently completely a solo album, ‘Midnight Flower’, teaming up with Flesh for Lulu’s Nick Marsh, which, as Blake herself says, is “plucked from Miranda Sex Garden and pinned to the breast of a mediaeval baebe, has been pressed for you, as a keepsake.”

Nick Marsh, meanwhile, has also recently released a solo album which Blake produced. This marks a shift from his old school rock tradition and towards a cinematic Leonard Cohen style. On this night Blake and Marsh will be performing a combination of each others’ songs and new songs they have written together. Are we excited? Yes, we are.

Imprint is the experimental, electronic art of London based Sin D’rella, and after much struggle was finally unleashed on Myspace early in 2008. She had a successful US tour at the end of 2008 and was released by US label Shinto as a result. Peter Hook (of Joy Division/New Order) had this to say about Imprint’s version of ‘Love Will Tear Us Apaer’: "Sent shivers up my spine. Made my hairs stand on end...Haunting. Good...Very good! ". Sound on Sound magazine says "lush, gothic-tinged strings, bells and piano over a stark framework of distorted industrial loops and apocalyptic sound effects. At the centre of all this was an impassioned vocal performance.”

Opening the evening will be Bleeding Heart Narrative which is the solo project of Oliver Barrett, and comprises principally of haunting cellos, repeating piano melodies, hushed vocals and layers of otherworldly sounds. Occupying a space somewhere between a more traditional song-structure and an exploration of noise and textures, sometimes expands up to eight players, including cellos, viola, drums, guitar, bass and a more prominent use of vocals.

Moose Factory and Cloth Cat Studios Present: Matt Elliott @ The Brudenell Social Club, 33 Queens Rd, LS6 1NY, Leeds on April 14 with support from Benjamin Weatherhill and the Trumpets of Death and 7 Hertz. Doors 7.30. £5 on the door or £4 in advance through Wegotticket.com (0113 2752411).

Moose Factory, the leftfield London-based promoters, Cloth Cat Studios, the Leeds-based community music organisation have teamed up for the first time to bring Matt Elliott from France to Leeds. Matt Elliott first found fame for his drum ‘n’ bass/space rock mixes as Third Eye Foundation but for four albums under his own name he has been increasingly focussing on a unique blend of Balkan folk, melancholic introspection and studio wizardry. He is currently on UK tour promoting his latest album, ‘The Howling Songs’. Past review comments have included

“you can imagine this as the soundtrack of the abandoned house at the end of road, brimming with memories.” (BBC).

“Disturbing, complicated, and enthrallingly strange…it's like giving blinking eyes a chance to adjust to a dark room-- shapes emerge slowly, breaking up and coalescing as your vision adjusts, realigns, modifies.” (Pitchfork Media).

“Incredibly moving music and another quiet masterpiece.” (Boomkat)

“This is oblique, yet somehow deeply personal stuff, an eerie, mental soundscape that might be triggered off by looking back through a very old family photo album, perhaps.” (NME)

Supporting Matt Elliott will be two Leeds artists who also happen to have at times a melancholic folk sound. Benjamin Weatherhill presents songs that sound like a distant memory of something very quintessentially British. His band, The Trumpets of Death, expand his usual understated performances with such sounds as free-improv sax. Has to be seen to believe it.

A live review:

“In spite of his chosen style demanding an acoustic approach, the twang of his cheap electric guitar, the insane saxophone improvisations and the often sporadic drumming all breathed a somewhat sinister life into his fantastic songs. This is folk music relevant to such an urban context...” (HiFi Club, Leeds)

First on the bill are chamber improv masters 7 Hertz. They play a mesmerising blend of gypsy fiddle music, klezmer, jazz and classical. Beautiful stuff.

“stirring yet mellowing and original chamber-folk” (Leeds Music Scene)

You can rely on Go!Zilla to fly in the face of what’s expected. Their first party of 2009 was about as anti the spirit of dull, joyless January as anyone could possibly have dreamt, with a packed out Cargo getting down to live sets from Joey Negro’s Sunburst Band and deep house hot property Agnes. Anyone who can make Shoreditch in deep mid-winter feel like Rio in high summer is entirely deserving of props.

The good vibrations are set to continue into March: Go!Zilla is hosting a DFA-flavoured night, headed up by rising star Woolfy and his band presenting the UK premiere of their live show and the official UK album preview party of his album on DFA. Support comes from DFA / Gucci Soundsystem’s Ben Rhymer, Lesser Panda, Disco Bloodbath DJs and resident James Priestley.

Woolfy’s mellifluous, map-hopping music perfectly suits Go!Zilla’s eclectic vision - touching on disco, strung-out rock, sun-bleached Balearica and stargazing electronica, all sealed with a considerable pop panache that’s made him a favourite among critics and switched-on fans around the world. You need to hear this guy.

Originally from London, L.A. resident Woolfy is a disciple of the legendary DJ Harvey and draws inspiration from “dirty disco, rare 12"s from '73-'84, a bit of English punk, pub funk, and booze". He teamed up with Projections to make last year’s The Astral Projections of Starlight LP, a work of mellow dancefloor psychedelia full of wry humour, loping disco beats and razor-sharp hooks. It’s no surprise that New York’s two hippest record labels, DFA and Rong Music, are teaming up to release his forthcoming solo album. Performing at Go!Zilla with a three-piece band, you can rest assured that Woolfy will rule.

Offering support are Go!Zilla favourites Lesser Panda. The East London five-piece are one of the capital’s finest live acts, boasting fans like Optimo and Riton. Their effortlessly fluid fusion of rock and electronic styles has drawn comparisons with Arthur Russell and The Cure, no less.

On the decks: Ben Rhymer, Disco Bloodbath DJs and James Priestley. Ben is part of DFA’s Gucci Soundsystem, best known for the ‘ACarpenter’ single and a stunning remix for LCD Soundsystem. In the past year Disco Bloodbath’s rammed Dalston parties have become something like a phenomenon, gaining all kinds of media, muso and hipster attention for their sleazy signature sound. James Priestley is one half of the award-winning secretsundaze crew, Simple Records recording artist and Go!Zilla’s resident DJ.

Go!Zilla once again put other hosts to shame, bringing a cutting edge, diverse but coherent mix of talented bands and DJs to Cargo’s stage; your presence on the dancefloor completes a perfect equation.

2009 sees the return of Watford punks Gallows with their first new material since the release of the now-legendary ‘Orchestra Of Wolves’ album in 2006. Produced by GGGarth Richardson (Biffy Clyro, Rise Against, Rage Against The Machine) at London’s RAK Studios and titled ‘Grey Britain’, Gallows second album is a swift upper-cut to the face of anyone expecting the band to have tamed their sound for mass consumption. If anything, Gallows sound nastier and more feral than ever before, but there’s a progression in the music that will smash any pre-conceived notions about the band to bits. And this is a record that comes with a message from a band with something to say, viciously documenting life in Britain today.

Gallows will tour the UK to promote the album in May at the following dates.

May 2009

2nd Brighton Concorde 2
