NOAH AND THE WHALE PRESENT THE A SIDES

Noah and the Whale, fresh from being the breakthrough act of the year, are releasing a limited number of 12” under their other, punkier guise; The A Sides.
Recorded over two nights and with a strict two take limit, The A Sides came from left over studio time as Noah and the Whale recorded their B Sides. The vinyl will feature previously unheard original material and covers and art work from Alex Brenchley, who has long collaborated with Noah and the Whale.

All profits from the release and from a second ever live show (their one and only live date so far was at Push club in May 2008) will be donated to the charity Age Concern. The band say this generous move is inspired by both the festive season and a visit to the retirement home of Cyril, one of the band’s grandfathers.

Available from Young and Lost Club, one of the best labels around for cutting edge music, Noah and the Whale present The A Sides is released on 22nd December and will be limited to just 2500 pressings.

Noah and the Whale are due to play their last show of 2008 at Push club’s New Years Eve party at the Astoria 2.

Hallelujah indeed! A very clever group of people tired of X-Factor led Christmas durge have launched a campaign to get the genius that was Jeff Buckley to number one this xmas with his iconic version of Leonard Cohen's Hallelujah, and they need your help!
Here's the mandate from the makers..

"Following the rather depressing news that this year's X factor finalist will be covering Leonard Cohen's beautiful 'Hallelujah,' I think everyone should download the Jeff Buckley version, instead of buying the inevitably soulless version churned out by Simon Cowell's Crimbo flash in the pan.

This is not a group intended to make cruel or derogatory remarks about any participants in this years X factor, but if you love Buckley's version, let's make sure everyone forgets the pale imitation as quickly as possible.

I doubt this will work, but if I am willing to download this version the week the X factor version comes out, I hope others will too.

SHARP END OF THE KNIFE: MEET FEVER RAY

What would you do if one decade into your career you suddenly saw one of your songs turned into a worldwide smash? If you’re Karin Dreijer Andersson, formerly singer with ‘90s pop hopes Honey Is Cool and now one half of The Knife, the answer is to take a couple of years off and return as a solo artist under a new name: Fever Ray.
In Karin’s own words, “I had so many songs to record that I just had to make an album. I thought I was going to have a longer break but I guess it will never happen. I can't stop working. My aim was to finish the album and now that it's done I'm a bit restless (good that The Knife has an opera to write then.) During the last years I discovered that I like to sing too, so I hope that my newly found live band will make it to the stages next year. We are rehearsing and building something beautiful and brilliant."

‘If I Had A Heart’ is the first single from Fever Ray: a stirring mantra, a boundless loop, a deep sleep spreading over fields and endless oceans. A dark evocation of hope and a demand for “more, give me more”.

VIDEO: FAN DEATH - VERONICA'S VEIL

In the wake of their super-limited 12" single on Erol Alkan's Phantasy Sounds label, soul-sampling femme-fatales Fan Death are here with their first music video: 'Veronica's Veil.'

Directed by Nathan Drillot for Salazar Productions in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, this ambitious shoot was a triumph of the insane work ethic of both the band and the crew. Due to the extremely low budget (about $400!) the scope of the video was ambitiously grand.

They filmed in constant 90 degree heat, no one could speak Spanish, the band was enlisted to help do tech work and many of the locations were so remote that entire days were spent accessing them to get seconds of footage. Nonetheless, the video that came out of the challenging atmosphere was worth it; Bollywood by way of Tijuana with a pitstop at an underwater Fellini dream carnival. Like Fan Death, absolutely magical.

MORRISSEY NEWS: SINGLE, ALBUM, GIGS!

Yes people the king is back! The man who only needs one name, Steven, is back amongst us once more with a new album, new single and more chances to see him in the flesh.
Morrissey has announced three UK live dates for May 2009 when he will play London’s Royal Albert Hall on the 11th and two nights at Manchester’s Apollo on 22nd and 23rd.

Tickets for all three shows went on sale today, Friday 5th December, at 10am (see ticket info below).

Morrissey’s new studio album “Years of Refusal” will be released on 16th February 2009 on Polydor/Decca, preceded by the single “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris” one week prior. The single will be supported by two new songs “Because Of My Poor Education” and “Shame Is The Name”, the latter featuring additional vocals by Chrissie Hynde.

“Years of Refusal” was completed earlier this year at Conway Studios in LA with the late Jerry Finn, producer of Morrissey’s acclaimed 2004 UK No.2 album “You Are The Quarry”. Morrissey describes the new album, the follow up to 2006’s “Ringleader of The Tormentors” (a UK No.1), as his strongest work to date. The 12-track album includes a clutch of new songs played live in recent months including “I’m Throwing My Arms Around Paris”, “Something Is Squeezing My Skull”, “Mama Lay Softly On The Riverbed” and “One Day Goodbye Will Be Farewell”.

Jamie Lidell's second album, Multiply caught people off-guard in 2005. Few expected the restless sonic scientist to make an uplifting soul record, but he did; and audiences and critics were captivated by the fusion of his influences with deeply felt song writing, meticulous production skills, and most of all, that flipping amazing voice. According to the reviews, Jamie was at various times, Little Richard, Jimi, Otis, Sly, Prince, Marvin, Stevie or some mashed-up combo of them all. Meanwhile, his live show has become an infamously exhilarating experience, with Jamie performing on the edges of control and chaos, turning music inside out.

The show at Koko follows the release of new album ‘Jim' on the 28th of April. Jim will switch you on in the morning, move you on the dance-floor and take you down in the small hours. It's a bold, promiscuously diverse album, mixing up gospel grooves, sweetly sung and fiercely passionate soul, delicately moving ballads, thumping early R & B, synthed-up disco, and even a touch of ‘hillbilly funk'. "I haven't tried to hide the influences," he says "This is the music I love." But, listen closely and you can hear Jamie moving in new directions, creating a sound and style that is entirely his own.

Brighton's FUJIYA & MIYAGI remain situated somwhere between rock band and electronic dance act, and are perfecting a sound that is uniquely their own.

MICACHU is the moniker of major new talent, 21 year old songwriter and producer Mica Levi. She studies composition at the Guildhall School of Music & Drama in London . As well as writing more traditional pieces, she writes electronic pop songs, sometimes delivered acoustically. She has worked with a band of equally talented musicians ("The Cluster") made up of Miss Bienek, Taza, Yvette, Baker Trouble, Mayhem, Kit Downes, Ghostpoet and Kwes, but has recently unveiled her amazing new band ("the Shapes"), made up of Raisa Khan and Marc Pell.

"Hello To You All At This Special Time Of Year, Originally, I tried writing this in the style of the Phil Spector Christmas message from the sleeve notes to ‘A Christmas Gift For You’, but then when I read it back I realised it made me sound a bit mental.
All that stuff about great traditions being contemporised through the pop music of today. It wasn’t really like that. We didn’t set out to write a Christmas song, it just turned out that it couldn’t be anything else, and however much we tried to pretend it was just a song about snow, it would always make us think of Christmas when we listened to it. I guess some songs just are what they are, and there’s nothing you can do about it. If a song wants to be a Christmas song it will be a Christmas song, or any other type of song it wants to be.

And because the song could never be anything else, we thought we’d better release it as a Christmas single, and so that you can enjoy it too we’re going to make it available for everyone to buy from December 15th. And then we thought perhaps we should throw a party and invite you all along, so we’re playing a Christmas show at the Hoxton Square Bar and Kitchen to coincide with its release. This is the first single to be released on our own Too Young To Die label since we put out ‘Paper Cuts’ three years ago, and I don’t think I’ve been as excited about a record of ours coming out since then.

Our new album will be released in March next year, but for now This is ‘The First Snowflake’, a little pop song about feeling lost and alone at Christmas. I hope it makes you happy in the way that all the best sad songs should, and I hope you have as much fun listening to it as we did recording it for you.

After years of anticipation, the freshly named Gaymers Camden Crawl is pleased to announce the addition of Camden’s historic Roundhouse venue as jewel in the crown of the festival’s participating venues. The 2009 event will also see the inauguration of its official broadcast partnership with digital radio station BBC 6 Music. As is tradition, Camden Town will play host to over a mile and a half of fantastic new talent for over thirty hours across more than forty venues. In addition to its customary stellar line up of live music acts, the festival will feature a vast array of interactive daytime activities and cutting edge performances across the arts, including visual art, comedy, spoken word, theatre and much more.

In recent years, the Crawl has seen the likes of Kate Nash, Mystery Jets, Klaxons, The Cribs, Noah & The Whale, Adele, The Kooks, Calvin Harris, Sway, The Fratellis, Lethal Bizzle, Cage The Elephant, Hot Chip and Sam Sparro cut their teeth in Camden Town amongst such legends as Buzzcocks, Billy Bragg, The Charlatans, Moby, The Damned, Amy Winehouse and Echo & The Bunnymen. The 2009 Gaymers Camden Crawl, scheduled to take place Friday 24th and Saturday 25th April, is sure to follow in the footsteps of its predecessors featuring the hottest new acts converging in one location to launch the festival season.

The programme kicks off from midday on Friday the 24th until the wee hours of the following Sunday. Upon arrival each ticket holder will be presented with an all-access wristband, programme guide, timetable and free download album to help plot his/her day’s adventure. ‘Crawlers’ are granted unlimited access to all official festival venues featuring more than 150 live artists, daytime activities & arts programme and aftershow parties capacity permitting.

In keeping with Crawl tradition and the spirit of discovery, the full line-ups and stage times remain a closely guarded secret until each night and surprise guests may appear at any time and at any venue.

The evening line-ups are selected by a committee of music industry tastemakers, including radio DJs, club promoters, journalists and record labels. The most hotly tipped acts will appear on the bill both days, alternating venues on Friday and Saturday to allow die-hard Crawlers two opportunities to see their most coveted artists. All other artists will perform on one day or evening of the event only.

Tickets for the Gaymers Camden Crawl 2009, available as either 2-day or single day passes, go on sale 9:00 am Monday 17th November. Initial line-ups will be announced January 2008.

CASTLEHAVEN COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION CHARITY

The Castlehaven Community Association has been named as the official charity partner of the Gaymers Camden Crawl 2009. The CCA is a registered charity (no 295829) dedicated to fulfilling the educational, recreational & social needs of all Camden Town residents. Since its inception in 1986, CCA has offered a diverse and rewarding range of services. Current programmes include after school & youth clubs for different ages and interest groups, support for parents and a variety of activities for pensioners. Young people are a major focus of CCA work and this is reflected in a number of initiatives, such as the Senior Youth Inclusion Project, which offers key worker support to those identified as being at risk of crime, anti-social behaviour or exclusion.

The Camden Crawl has chosen to support the positive work of this small but high profile and vibrant community association in an effort to help promote positive social development within Camden Town. Various community projects are currently being planned in tandem with the CCA and will be announced soon.

Tickets are to be exchanged for wristbands which allow free entry to each of the participating venues as individual capacities permit. Wristbands and programmes announcing the full line ups and timings for the event are obtainable from 11:00 am onward each day at the Camden Crawl ticket exchange point located at: THE ROUNDHOUSE (Chalk Farm Road, NW1). Please note that 2-day pass holders will need to return to ticket exchange to collect Saturday’s timetable. Festival goers are advised to arrive early as there will be a full daytime programme on both days from 12:00pm. Doors open for evening schedule at 5:30 pm most venues. There will be late night after show parties featuring live bands and DJs until 4:00 am both days.

I know what you've been thinking, what would really brighten up my Christmas this year is some sparkly tunage from those Noah and the Whale boys. Well guess what, you're in luck! It's just been announced that our favourite biblical indie band with be releasing a mini-album this yule.
Four men, one studio, two late nights and a two take limit. The A Sides are the product of left-over studio time from recording Noah and the Whale B sides.
Freed from a subterranean high-security safe of mainstream musical conformity by London’s finest purveyors of cutting-edge crushed velvet musical mayhem, Young and Lost Club are releasing a limited pressing of 2500 12” EPs in time for Christmas on December 22nd. A mixture of unheard originals and covers, and ground-breaking artwork from the band’s long-term collaborator Alex Brenchley, the raw raucous punk energy of the recordings promises to dislocate ossicles and fracture conventional musical sensibilities.

With De La Soul, Pos Plug Won became an arch exponent of accessible conscious rap. He joins dan le sac Vs Scroobius Pip to rework the duo’s transcendent hit single, that leapt from their bedroom studio onto the airwaves early last year. It comes with remixes from Friction, Foama, and Drop The Lime, plus a Sunday Best Cosmic Dub mix.

FRATELLIS TO DJ FOR CHARITY

The Fratellis will DJ at the Little Noise Sessions closing party following their performance on Tuesday 18th November and entry is by donation to MENCAP.

The party will round-up the series of events organised by Radio 1's Jo Whiley and MENCAP and will be held at new Islington venue, The Library, situated opposite the Union Chapel on Upper Street.

The night will also feature an auction of signed memorabilia, hosted by The Sun's Gordon Smart, proceedings from which will go to MENCAP; and a DJ set by Robbie Knox (Soccer AM, Channel B).

Doors open 10:30pm - 2am, Tuesday 18th Nov.

Tape Song is a rock n’ roll anthem featuring tantalizing vocals from Alison Mosshart and disjointed guitar playing from Jamie Hince, with a highly infectious and explosive chorus. The 7” is backed with London Hates You, a dreamier 60’s inspired track portraying the band’s more gentle side.
