The recent release follows Nokia’s announcement that OneNote, Lync 2010, Document Connection and PowerPoint Broadcast are available for Nokia Belle platform.

Nokia and Microsoft worked together to offer Symbian users the chance to download Word Mobile, PowerPoint Mobile and Excel Mobile applications.

The whole Microsoft Office Mobile Suite has been optimized to work on the following Nokia Belle smartphones: Nokia 701, Nokia 700, Nokia 603, Nokia E7, Nokia X7, Nokia C7, Nokia Oro, and Nokia C6-01.

Nokia fans have probably already noticed that some popular Symbian smartphones are missing from the compatibility list.

No worries, as the Finnish company has confirmed that Nokia N8, Nokia E6 and Nokia 500 will also be added to the list of compatible devices a bit later.

Moreover, Nokia 808 PureView smartphone that has yet to make its debut on the market, will come pre-loaded with all these apps when it begins selling.

The applications can be downloaded and installed through Nokia Software Update tool or connecting the smartphone to a PC via Nokia Suite desktop software.

According to Nokia, Microsoft Office Mobile for Belle platform will be available for download from the Nokia Store within the next few weeks.

The utility of the apps cannot be questioned. Office Mobile allows users to create, edit or delete documents. With Word mobile, users can also save or send documents, as well as keep some of the functionalities offered by the desktop version, such as pinch and zoom.

Presentation texts and speaker notes can be edited in PowerPoint Mobile, while Excel Mobile allows users to create charts or insert formulae and view rich data and charts while on the move.

Skype and Symbian have always (?) been good friends, so it’s only natural for the latest iteration of Symbian to get a Skype app. Of course, since Nokia decided to kill off the Symbian brand, the latest version of the OS is simply called Nokia Belle.

So, owners of Nokia Belle handsets now have a Skype app that provides free Skype to Skype calls and Instant Messaging, and allows them to save money on calls or texts to numbers from abroad. The app can be downloaded via Nokia Store at this link.

The big news was to hear about Symbian Belle leaked just before the official release of Symbian Anna. But I didn’t try that as well on the spot, I seriously had lost interest in the updates. Symbian Anna was officially release just after two days when I upgraded to it via Nokia Software Updater. But then I just couldn’t resist giving my N8 one more job to wear the Belle Cloths. I had firmware files from the day one when the Belle got leaked. Only what I didn’t get was the interest and time.

UPDATE February 7, 2012: The official Nokia Belle has been released for existing Symbian^3 and Anna devices. If your device is listed to receive Nokia Belle update then you should update via Nokia Suite.

UPDATE December 20, 2011: Flashing or Upgrading to Symbian Belle v111.030.0609 is straight forward. See this post to upgrade.

UPDATE: This post has been updated to help with easy method to get your N8 ready for flashing. Only two steps are updated, step 4 and the step when the error message appears after clicking “Refurbish”.

UPDATE November 14: As newer version of Symbian Belle v111.030.0607 has been leaked. The following tutorial is not recommended to use with this new leaked version. To upgrade to latest Symbian Belle 111.030.0607 is simple and straight forward.

You must keep me not responsible for any loss of yours if it happens. “Flashing” is not a recommended task, so be fully responsible while you do it. Also note that, it will void the warranty of the device.

Upgrading to Symbian Belle is just 5 min job (could be 10 minutes if doing it first time.) But going through this post and reading it all must take some time that make sure you understand how to do it.

DISCLAIMER: We at www.nokiabelleupdates.blogspot.com do not recommend flashing/refurbishing ormanually installing official/custom/hacked firmwares on your devices. Hence we make tutorials in detail to be helpful for you to experiment with new softwares. That said; You are the only one who will be responsible for any loss or damage caused to your devices.

Follow the instructions accurately as I tell here and you should not get any trouble with it. But proceed with responsibility.

Do not attempt any thing until you read the following instructions in full.

Prepare with the following things:

Check that you really have a Nokia N8 with you ;-)
Phoenix Service Software. Download from here.
Symbian Belle firmware files. Download from here. (Archive password: orvvan + mohamad 79)
(Copy all of 4 files to anywhere on your hard disk in a folder)> RM-596_111.010.0606_79u_prd.core.fpsx> RM-596_111.010.0606_13.01_MEA_A_79u_prd.rofs2.fpsx> RM-596_111.010.0606_C04.01_MEA_1_79u_prd.rofs3.fpsx> RM-596_111.010.0606_U07.01_79u.uda.fpsx

Symbian Anna firmware files. (You might already have them if you have upgraded to Symbian Anna)- If you have these firmware files, you can skip the remaining parts below with (*).
* If you upgraded to Symbian Anna (leaked) manually some time before the official roll-out, you will know where the Anna files you kept. Get them.
* If you have recently upgraded to official Symbian Anna via Ovi Suite or via Nokia Software Updater, you don’t need to look around on the internet to get the files.
** Ovi Suite stores the downloaded firmware files on the hard disk.
**** In Windows 7, find them at [C:\ProgramData\Nokia\Nokia Service Layer\A\nsl_service_module_00001\vpls\www.dsut.online.nokia.com.oti.caresuite\Products\rm-596]
** Nokia Software Updater also stores the downloaded firmware files on the hard disk.
**** In Windows 7, find them at[C:\Users\%WINDOWS_USER%\AppData\Local\Nokia\NSU3\NOSSU2\variants\Products\rm-596]
——- (in above path NSU3 and NOSSU2 are version based. Use common sense.)
* If you can’t find the Symbian Anna files on your computer’s hard disk, then you will need to download them now. Use Navifirm Software to download Symbian Anna firmware files for your N8. Click here to download Navifirm.
(If you don’t know how to use Navifirm, then run Navifirm and Go through this screen.)

The Process

Now make sure that you have everything above ready. Follow as below.

The version of Phoenix Software I used in this tutorial was 2011.02.000.44842, the same as linked above for you to download. If you already have another version of Phoenix, you can also use that but the screen shots listed below, as were taken from version 2011.02.000.44842, can be a bit different than yours. But you still should be able to follow the steps.

Again! read all of the steps in full before you start with it, so that you will be aware of everything which is going to be in your way. I always do it as it helps doing the job more accurately.

Run the Phoenix Software.
Go to Tools > Options > Product Locations – You should see a dialog window like below. Read the directory path in [Data package 1] Close the window after noticing the path, we don’t need this window any more.
[C:\Program Files (x86)\Nokia\Phoenix] in above example. Locate the path on your computer and Copy the Symbian Anna files in C:\Program Files (x86)\Nokia\Phoenix\Products\RM-596\* Common Sense: “Program Files (x86)” is due to Windows 7 64-bit used. Windows XP or any Windows 32-bit will load the path as “Program Files”. The thing to consider is that the path specified in Phoenix should be the path on your Hard Disk Drive containing the Symbian Anna firmware files, or other wise the the Flashing process couldn’t be started.
* You might need to create folders “Products” and/or “RM-596″ if not existed already in as the path above.
~~Now connect your Nokia N8 with stock USB Cable to your computer [in Ovi Suite Mode].~~ Close the Ovi Suite if it is open.UPDATE: Make sure your Nokia N8 is turned off. Now connect your N8 with stock USB Cable to your computer and wait for a second or two until it goes in charging mode. Once it’s in charging mode, Press power button and hold it down for 8 seconds or until it vibrates three times. (Now make sure that the charging indicator besides USB port on N8 is not lighten up or is not blinking and the screen is totally black. Now continue as following)
In Phoenix, choose “No Connection” in Connections as below
In File menu, click “Open Product”.When the “Open Product” window appears, type “RM-596″ to filter and choose it from the list as shown below. Then click OK.
Go to “Flashing” in menu and choose “Firmware Update”.
In “Firmware Update” window click the button as shown with a red arrow in image 1. Now choose the entry in “Product Codes” window. And click OK
* This will be the product entry for Symbian Anna you have placed into the path (in Step-3 above). The Symbian Anna firmware files I chose were the official Symbian Anna. So it might be different at your end with your Anna firmware files. Whatever it is either the official or the manually downloaded leaked Symbian Anna, choose it.
Once you’ve chosen the product entry in above image-2, the product information will be populated in “Firmware Update” window as below. Make sure you “Check” the “Dead phone USB flashing”. Now click “Options”.
Once you clicked “Options”, following screen “Firmware Update Advanced Options” should appear with Symbian Anna files loaded. You must need to replace the files from Symbian Anna to Symbian Belle as shown in 2nd screen below.

You can select an entry in from the list and click “Edit” button to replace the file another.

Clicking “Edit” above will popup another dialog like below where you can replace the selected file by browsing through.
Click the button with three dots [...] (pointed with a red arrow) and then locate the Symbian Belle file as shown in above image. e.g. *.core.fpsx must be replaced with *.core.fpsx from Symbian Belle files.
Repeat the step with all four files as pointed with arrows above. Do not change any other option.
*.rofs2.fpsx to be replaced with *.rofs2.fpsx from Symbian Belle files.
*.rofs3.fpsx to be replaced with *.rofs3.fpsx
*.uda.fpsx to be replaced with *.uda.fpsx from Symbian Belle files.
And delete the remaining two entries.

After performing replacement and deleting two entries, you should see only four files in the list and those must be of Symbian Belle. See below. Confirm the values under under arrows.
When done, Click OK in
And then Click “Refurbish” in “Firmware Update” as below window.

The process will be started, just sit back and wait for a few minutes while the flashing of Symbian Belle completes.

NOTE: After clicking “Refurbish” you might see an error message from Phoenix like below

You might need to repeat this step more than once, if you do not do it correctly. But don’t panic, you will do it in a few times if not in one try.

If you see this error, do as following. (Explained thoroughly)

~~Disconnect the USB cable.~~
~~Make sure the device is turned off~~
~~When it’s off, press power button (it will vibrate once) but keep holding the power button for 8 more seconds (it will vibrate again thrice).~~
~~Connect the USB cable again.~~
~~Click OK~~

Flashing should continue if you did it right, or other wise repeat the steps until it works. (If your device goes on charging, the flashing will not start and you’ll need to repeat above 5 steps)

UPDATE: If you see an error like above – (Before continuing, please note that at this stage your N8 is supposed to be in turned-off state, not in charging mode and connected to the computer - since the step 4). OK Now! Do not disconnect the USB Cable. Just press the power button once and leave (do not hold it down, just press and leave so that your device should not start). You will see that the flashing will start on the back of the error message (on “Firmware update” window on the back of the error message). You can close the error message now by clicking any of the buttons, OK, Cancel or Cross and wait for the flashing to finish on “Firmware update” window.

How to hack Official Nokia Belle with Norton - Full tutorial

1. Download package Hacked belle offical in below.. and copy all files to phone memory or memory card.

2.Find and install "NortonSymbianHackLDD.sis". (Copied in step 1)

3.After Installed, Launch it.

4.press Options -> select Anti-Virus -> select Quarantine list

5.Then select options -> restore (or restore all ). Then click yes.

6.After completing step 5, If you don't use it (Norton), you can delete it from App manager

7.Find and install "RomPatcherPlus_3.1_LiteVersion.sisx" (Copied in step 1)

8.Launch ROMPatcher.
After launch it, you apply the second patch (click the blue circle)
- Open4all.rmp
- Installserver.rmp
as one by the press Options -> Add to auto

9.Find & Install xplore (copied in step 1)

10.Launch xplore. Press Menu -> tools -> Choose 2 line: show systems file and show hiden file.
Then find installserver.exe (copied in step 1). Use xplore copy paste it to c/sys/bin.

11.Restart the phone

Nokia Belle Feature Pack 1 update (v 112.010.1404) is now available for the Nokia 700, 701 and 603. We updated our Nokia 603 and felt it faster than before. Nokia announced the Belle FP1 update last month that brings Dolby Headphone and Dolby Digital Plus support, 20 new home screen widgets and refreshed multitasking bar. It also increases the processor speed of Nokia 700 and 701 from 1GHz to 1.3GHz.

The browser has been updated to version 8.2 which is faster and has HTML 5 support. It also has the latest version of the Nokia Maps.

The update is now available Over the Air (OTA) and is about 25MB. You can also update the phone using Nokia Software Updater or Nokia Suite. Do you use any of these phones? Did you get the Belle FP1 update ?

Nokia Belle update now available for N8, C7, E6, X7 and C6-01

The roll-out of Nokia Belle (i.e. Symbian Belle) for existing Symbian^3/Anna devices has started across the world, with most devices (here's the official Nokia Belle rollout status checker) getting an update via Nokia Suite to firmware v111.030. There's no OTA (over the air) update available this time because of the complexity and size of the update, which means the latest Nokia Suite on a Windows PC is required. Nokia is enabling the update, product code by product code, across the world. (Story updated again, with list of known issues).

Nokia Suite, for Windows, is here, if you want to grab the latest version. Note that Nokia Software Updater for Mac can't (officially) be used to update to Belle, for technical reasons (it doesn't manage the backing up of all the necessary data properly).

Although your user data should all be preserved (Nokia Suite takes your device through a full backup/wipe/restore cycle and note to follow the instructions given on-screen exactly, you only need to enter your SIM PIN number, all other device prompts can be ignored), the usual precautions should be taken. i.e. sync your PIM data to another computer or phone or to the cloud. User settings, bookmarks, text messages, and predictive text dictionaries will also be preserved across the update, but applications installed to (or with components on) the system (C:) disk will be lost - you'll have to download them again from the Nokia Store (or wherever you sourced them). Note that a number of applications in the Nokia Store are known to currently be incompatible with Nokia Belle - see here for a list.

Your device will be notified in its normal regular check for updates over the air, but the instruction is clearly 'Use your PC to update'. If you're wondering where your update is, see Nokia's official Belle availability page.

Included in the 250MB plus update (some users have reported up to 390MB - it's variable according to device, variant and previous firmware version) is the new Nokia Belle on Symbian OS, with a large number of improvements:

A major reworking of the user interface, with an emphasis on ease of use, updated design language and flatter navigation hierarchy. Specific items are detailed below.

Better use [a new memory management scheme] of the 256MB of RAM in all Symbian^3/Anna devices. In practice this will mean no occasional 'Memory full' errors and (hopefully) foolproof execution of even the largest 'HD' games. Applications which are running will, on the whole, stay running, whatever else you start up. Overall performance is better, in terms of UI responsiveness and multitasking.

Qt 4.7.4 is baked in from day one, meaning far fewer installation problems for Qt apps and faster (and more silent) installs in general.

Full NFC functionality (on the Nokia C7, at least, which has the necessary chip!), including: tap and share (share images, videos and contacts), tap and pair (pair Bluetooth accessories through a simple tap), tap and access (read tags to find information) and tap to play (unlock new levels on NFC-enabled games).

Improvements in screen real estate, with slimmer top status bar and optional (in some apps) bottom toolbar, meaning that all phones will have a larger useful display area.

Homescreen widgets will now come in up to five different sizes (1x1, 2x1, 4x1, 2x2, 4x4) and allow a greater degree of interactivity. In addition to dragging widgets around a homescreen in 'Edit' mode, you can now also drag from one homescreen to another. Widget re-positioning when moving from portrait to landscape mode remains intelligent, with some tweaks for the new variety in widget sizes.

New drop-down menu, Android style, to access notifications, connectivity toggles (including a welcome one for 'Mobile data', which previously required an involved trip into 'Settings') and system status information from most places in the UI.

The Symbian homescreen system now supports up to six pages (previously the limit was three for most phones and five for the smaller-screened E6).

A rewritten application launcher with default 'flat' structure, i.e. all applications are presented in one big scrolling grid of icons, though as I explained here, it's easy enough to make new folders, including one called 'trash' (or similar), somewhere to put all the apps you don't think you'll even need - this significantly reduces the amount of vertical scrolling needed. There's an option to switch the icons to alphabetic order, or to quick match/search the list, but happily your original order is also remembered so that you can switch back at any time. Newly installed applications are now marked with a red asterisk until they've been opened for the first time.

An application can be 'added to the homescreen' from the main app menu, by long pressing its icon.

The bottom softkeys and (optional) bottom toolbar are replaced with a single toolbar comprising up to four icons (Back/Exit, Custom 1, Custom 2, and Menu). This, for most applications, in theory, gives the UI a flatter hierarchy, with less use of menus and with more direct interaction.

Improvements to the lock screen, which will now have information about missed calls and messages. The lock screen also now supports a transparency effect, showing the underlying homescreen wallpaper.

Update to Web, with numerous optimisations and easy access to multiple windows through a permanent toolbar icon. Like desktop browsers, Web keeps track of your 'Most visited pages' and this can be set as your 'homepage' if needed. A long press and drag on web page text now pops up a 'Copy' option, for copying text to the system clipboard.

Update to Music Player, with a 'floating track list' in the album art 'cover flow' view.

Updates to several other Symbian stalwart applications. Calendar gets an overall facelift and Notes now brings up a white (and AMOLED-unfriendly...) editing screen.

Update to Camera, showing the new, streamlined UI that featured in the Beta Labs N8 Camera update. Although functionality is the same, far fewer taps are needed to get to the majority of settings and functions. Note also that the 'Close-up' mode for the N8 video capture (i.e. with continuous auto-focus) is also included, so no need to install that as well.

Availability

The Nokia Belle update is available for the Nokia N8, C7 (and variants), C6-01, E7, X7, and E6. It is currently not available for the Nokia 500 for technical reasons (different hardware platform, unique device constraints). Like all of Nokia's software updates, it is rolled out in stages. This means that the update may not be available for your device immediately.

The update is now widely available in Europe, the Americas, Asia, Africa and the Middle East for unbranded devices. The update is also available for about two thirds of operator branded devices, although this varies widely from market to market.

Procedure

If you have not already done so, update Nokia Suite to the latest version.
Make sure your smartphone is in 'PC Suite' mode (Settings>Connectivity>USB)
Plug your smartphone into Nokia Suite and wait while it's recognised, installed, as usual.
If your PC is online, the software will check for update availability. You can go into the updater tab to force a refresh of this, if needed.
The update is downloaded. If you've previously installed Belle on another device and the version number is the same, the same update source is used, saving you (and Nokia) download time and bandwidth.
Follow the prompts on-screen. Nokia Suite does a full backup of all your PIM data, user settings, bookmarks, text messages, and predictive text dictionaries. Any miscellaneous documents/files/databases/whatever found on the internal disk will be copied to E:/Nokia_Belle, to make sure you don't lose them.
Nokia Suite then completely wipes the internal (C:) disk as part of laying down the Belle OS.
You may be asked by your phone for your SIM card PIN - this is the only thing you should respond to.
Nokia Suite then restores your data, backed up above.
Nokia Store will prompt for an immediate update to the latest QML version - accept this and wait while it installs.
While you're there, look for Nokia Social 1.5 in the Store and download the update to this too, since the Belle firmware still contains the old v1.3 variant. Note that, once run and logged into Facebook, Nokia Social will take some background time updating your Contacts thumbnails. Please allow for this and accept that Contacts will appear to be constantly changing for a while.
Note that any applications that had been installed to the internal (C) disk will need re-installing from the Nokia Store or from your original SIS files etc.
Go into SW_update at some point, on the device, and you should find a few extras, including an update for Search and (if in the UK and with a UK handset) an update for BBC iPlayer DRM.

Known issues

As with any major OS update, there are bound to be some minor glitches. So far, I've noticed:

'bottom left' taps, on the back icon or on the application grid icon, aren't always recognised - if the OS is busy in the background, taps can get missed.
playing back FLV video files is broken, most files play erratically, if at all.
some applications that had been installed to mass memory (E:), usually games, don't reappear in the main app menu after the Belle install. These titles seem to have to be re-installed/downloaded as needed.
trying to share a photo or video from Gallery results in 'Feature not supported'
character counts not shown when composing SMS on the E7 in opened mode
random Wi-fi disconnects on some models (e.g. the E7) are still present - I was hoping the Wi-fi stack would have gotten a rewrite, but it seems not.
