is a small Nokia model offered by Virgin Mobile and Bell Mobility in Canada. The model begged for comparison with the 6015i, which Virgin also sells. I never actually tested a 6015i, but it is apparently identical to the 6016i, which I did test and is available on Bell.

The Nokia 2125i RF Performance

RF Sensitivity: Despite some serious flaws that I have yet to get to, I could hardly complain about this specific aspect of the phone. The RF sensitivity of the 2125i was nothing short of excellent, and even slightly better than the 6016i. This makes the 2125i among the best CDMA phones out there in this category.

Over-the-road Performance: The 2125i also shares all of the other Nokia phones’ ability to provide almost faultless over-the-road performance, especially compared to phones that use the Qualcomm chipset (which is virtually every other CDMA phone out there that doesn’t have the name Nokia on it).

The Nokia 2125i Audio Performance

Tonal Balance: So with such a glowing review for the phone’s RF prowess, this is where things totally fall to pieces. I can only HOPE that the 2125i I had was faulty, because if it wasn’t then this phone has the TINNIEST sound of any phone I’ve heard in ages. It sounds like I’m listening to a super-cheap kid’s toy instead of a serious piece of electronic equipment. Earpiece volume is quite acceptable, but you’ll probably keep it turned down anyway to avoid the headache-inducing tonal quality from getting to you.

Sound Reproduction: As if tonal balance wasn’t bad enough, the sound reproduction on the 2125i was dreadful. I’ve had my reservations about other Nokia CDMA models, but they sound positively gorgeous compared to the 2125i. As I noted above, I can only HOPE that the phone I tested was faulty, because it’s hard to image that Nokia would let something like this out of the factory.

Fortunately outgoing sound quality isn’t all that bad in a quiet environment. However, when there is a lot of background noise (such as the food court over at Square One) the overall sound quality of the outgoing audio degrades rapidly. Unless you get a kick of out of punishing your callers, try not to use the 2125i in noisy places.

Speakerphone: At last, an audio-related feature that the 2125i actually does well. The speakerphone on the 2125i produces lots of volume and it can be understood even in noisy environments. The tonal balance of the speaker is decidedly tinny, like the earpiece, but it doesn’t seem to matter as much under these circumstances. The microphone sensitivity is boosted slightly in this mode, but that only serves to worsen the problem I noted above with loud background noises.

Support Features

Ringer Volume: Because the ringer uses the same high-volume sounder as the speakerphone it is capable of very impressive volumes. Like all phones that contain a number of musical ringtones however, you’ll have to make sure you choose your rings carefully to get the maximum effect from the sounder. Certain frequencies come out decidedly louder than others.

Keypad Design: I didn’t like the all-in-one keypad design at first, but I found that it had good tactile feel, and the slight valleys between the keys (horizontally) actually made it possible to feel which key I was pressing without having to look at the phone. I still had a small problem with pressing two keys simultaneously, but as funky keypad designs go however, this is probably one of the least annoying.

Display: There is only one word to describe the display on this phone, and that’s TINY. It’s even smaller than the display on the old Nokia 6190. The resolution of the display is a mere 96 x 65 pixels, which also happens to be the same resolution as the ancient 6190. However, I will agree that the text looks crisp (if colors are properly chosen) and within the limited resolution it provides a surprising amount of information with fairly handsome fonts. Nokia provides a way to display photographs, but with so little pixels, don’t except to make out much in the image.

Conclusions

If it weren’t for the simply horrible audio qualities of this phone, it would actually be a fairly decent low-end model for Virgin and Bell. However, the 6015i provides virtually all of the same features with vastly superior sound quality and a larger screen (though admittedly with the same low resolution). The only thing that the 6015i doesn’t do as well is the speakerphone.

If it were me having to decide to buy this phone, I wouldn’t touch it with a 10-foot pole. The sound quality is just SO ANNOYING that I don’t even consider it a possibility, even if it came with lifetime free service.

1- Nokia 2125i thoughts

I never found much use for a call phone in all of my high school years. While many people were already carrying around the little mobile devices around, I thought it too much of a burden. Did I really want to be within reach of others 24/7? Once you give someone your cell number, they expect to be able to contact you at every waking moment and sleeping moment for that matter.
But by the time university rolled around, I started realizing that all the times I wished I had a phone and didn’t was beginning to outweigh the potential annoyances of a cell phone. Plus, I kept getting these weird looks when I answered that I didn’t have a cell phone to people asking for my cell number. I did a lot of research and drooled over a lot of nice phones. I went through all those nice gadgets but realized I didn’t really need anything other than the phone itself. I have a digital camera and MP3 player which would blow away, in terms of quality, any of the integrated features of a cell phone. I thus settled on one of the phones I could get for free with only a 1 year term at Bell Mobility, the Nokia 2125i.
The Phone
The phone is a two-tone gray color scheme with chrome trim. It’s pretty understated and doesn’t look fancy or feel fancy. It’s the classic Nokia candybar phone but compacted a bit. It doesn’t feel big or awkward to hold at all. It’s a little slippery feeling though. The screen is also pretty anemic in size, but that’s probably more to do with the overall size of the phone and the candybar design. It’s hard to place anything larger than the 96×96 resolution screen. That’s probably why many makers are moving to the slider and flip phones nowadays. The buttons have a hard-rubber feel to them as opposed to the plastic feel of many phones’ buttons. There is also no external antenna. The power button is at the top, which also houses the light bulb for the flashlight function. At the bottom, you’ll find the charger connector as well as a connector for connection external Nokia accessories.
User Interface
The user interface is governed by the small display. You won’t get a bunch of icons to move between. Instead the menu is navigated using the up and down button with each menu item taking up one ‘page’. You get your regular phone features like list of call, contact list, messages, gallery and organizational features like a calendar and alarm clock. Don’t get too excited; the very limited memory will limit what you can do.
Pressing the up button at the main screen sends you to the profile selection page where you can choose from several presets. You can modify those presets through the settings. Pressing the down button at the main screen shortcuts you to your contact list. All the main functions of the phone are easily accessible and should be fairly intuitive for most users.

Call Quality and Reception
I heard some absolute horror stories about the sound quality of this phone. Some said it was like talking through tin cans. I can safely say however, this is not the case. While there definitely is a certain ‘edge’ to the sound, it’s not bad at all and certainly not as metallic as I feared. Reception on the Bell network also seems to be decent. For most places around Waterloo, I’m getting at least half full signal strength and in many places, full signal strength. I haven’t really noticed much of a difference in call quality between the two states however. Because of the internal antenna, reception probably does suffer a bit compared to a phone with an external antenna. In the basement of some buildings, I get minimal signal strength.
Battery Life
Battery life seems to vary a lot with this phone depending on reception strength. At the residence basement I’m staying at where I’m getting almost no signal, I can only go about 2 days of low use before I get the low battery message. However, elsewhere in the city, I can go for 5 to 6 days without recharging. Overall I’m pretty pleased with the battery life. Since I’ve got a land line phone at my residence anyways, I just turn off the cell when I’m there. This way I can use the phone for about a week before recharging.
Other
You also have your choice from 20 or so ring tones. Volume of both the ring tone and of the call itself can be set to quite high. The speaker-piece seems to be pretty directional which is nice. You can still be heard fairly clearly even if the surroundings is noisy. A female co-worker at my co-op job also commented that the phone was ‘cute’ when she saw it. So umm… yeah, whatever that means.
Conclusion
You get what you paid nothing for I guess. For a free phone, especially with only a 1 year plan, I’m very happy with it. Expect nothing out of this phone aside from its calling abilities and you’ll be happy. The biggest plus for me is the relatively long battery life. Too many companies advertise x number of days of battery life and deliver only like 3 on standby. Nearly a week’s battery life with low use is good enough for me.
So if you’re looking for a cheap (free) phone and only a phone, this is definitely worth a hard look.

2- Nokia 2125i thoughts

I have been a cell phone user for 9 years and have had alot of cell phones due to bad luck. Two years ago i got a Nokia 2125i and 2 weeks after getting it i had dropped it in a parking lot and it bounced under the tire of a slow moving vehicle and was ran over. I retrieved it and went to see if i could get it fixed. The service man took it and turned it on. (it must of shut itself off after being ran over). Believe it or not it still worked, but the screen was unreadable, and no screen parts were available so i had to but another one. Honestly, this phone has fallen in a puddle, toliet, lost a few times, dropped at least 200 times. A few times the outside shell came off after being dropped but i just clicked it back on and the phone would be back up and running. I love the strength of this phone as well as the size and easy access.

How to Unlock a Nokia 2116I

The Nokia 2116i cell phone features a monochrome LCD display, a 250-number capacity phone book, and a vibrate function. The phone also includes a lock function for protecting data such as text messages and phone numbers from unauthorized access if the phone is lost or stolen. To unlock the Nokia 2116 you must enter your personal unlock code when prompted. When the phone is locked you will only be able to make emergency (911) calls.

Instructions

Switch the Nokia 2116i off then on again. A "Phone Locked" message will appear.

Enter your 4-digit lock code using the number buttons. The default code is "1234." If you enter the wrong code five times in a row, you will be prompted for your phone's "Security Code." See "Tips" for more information.

Select "OK." The phone lock will be released with the right code, letting you make calls and send text messages.

Tips & Warnings

Audio Playback: The Nokia 2115i does not come with an MP3 player. If all you want is a phone as inexpensive and nontechnical as possible without the expense of a monthly bill, just so you can make the occasional cell phone call, the Nokia 2115i Shorty from pay-as-you-go provider Virgin Mobile is the phone for you. This phone makes a Cracker Jack prize seem high tech and is so lacking in bells and whistles that it barely makes any noise even when it rings. But we know there are folks who need and want only the minimum, which this $39.99 phone offers.Considering Nokia's usually flamboyant cell phone industrial design, the two-toned gray 2115i Shorty is positively dull-looking. There's little to distinguish it from other basic candy bar handsets, and it's one of the last new models to offer a monochrome display (just 1.25 inches diagonally). The construction feels a tad flimsy as well, but at 4.99 by 1.66 by 0.85 inches and just 3 ounces, the handset is quite compact, making it comfortable to carry in a pants pocket.

The mobile offers a relatively pedantic (for Nokia) keypad layout with a slightly confusing navigation array. You get the normal Send and End buttons, as well as two soft keys, but the toggle moves only up and down and not to the side. It didn't hamper menu navigation, but it was quirky. The keypad buttons are composed of four white translucent bars, with three numbers on each bar. Number and especially letter labels are tiny and will be hard to read by anyone with less-than-perfect vision. Backlighting for the screen is a pale powder blue, while the bars brightly light up like a fluorescent photo light board. We didn't like, however, that there are no spine-mounted volume controls. As is normal for Nokia phones, the power button is located on the top of the phone rather than the red End key.

Interestingly, you are told to avoid touching the internal antenna area, a warning that is difficult to obey, since this area is not marked or indicated except in a general illustration indicating the top area of the phone. Since keeping a finger or two at the top of the phone is not only a natural hand position but also almost required to keep the earpiece securely over your ear canal, this was a difficult warning to obey. Fortunately, we did not suffer any of the call-quality consequences mentioned in the manual.

You can buy one of four replaceable covers (blue, cocoa, teak, or red for $14 each) to brighten up an otherwise pale phone. To swap a cover, the instructions say to "gently pull the bottom of the front cover away from the rest of the phone." Gently or roughly, the front cover refused to move. We came closer to losing a fingernail than removing the front cover.

What's surprising about the Nokia 2115i Shorty is that for a phone this low tech, you get a fair number of features. There is a 250-contact phone book, but you are limited to one-word name entries with no spaces. Initial entries allow only the insertion of one undesignated phone number, although you can add specific home/mobile/work numbers in the Edit function. Confusingly, e-mail addresses can be added but only through a completely different menu. You can, however, assign one of eight polyphonic ring tones to individual contacts.

While the Nokia 2115i Shorty skimps on the phone book, it paradoxically includes a variety of functions, such as an alarm clock, a vibrate mode, a currency calculator (odd on a phone that can be used only in the United States), a voice recorder that can record up to 60 seconds of memos, a countdown timer, voice dialing, a speakerphone, a stopwatch, a calendar, and a scheduler. All the additions seem more designed to be used by an active and tech-savvy phone user, not the occasional caller who is likely to be the primary customer for this phone.

Since this is a phone for a prepaid service plan, the call time elapsed stays on the screen after you hang up until you hit Dismiss. Just hitting the up direction on the navigation toggle lets you check your Virgin Mobile account and activate the Top Up refill options for adding minutes. You do get text messaging, but the only Web access is to Virgin Mobile's VirginXtras server for buying extras such as ring tones. While it took about 15 to 20 seconds to connect, ringer downloads took only about 10 seconds and were quite painless to assign once acquired.

One of the more fascinating functions included in the Nokia 2115i Shorty is SongID. Dial *43, then when prompted, simply hold the phone next to a speaker so that it can "hear" a song for 15 seconds. The connection automatically ends when the system has heard enough. For $1 each, Virgin text-messages you back the song title and artist. Virgin correctly identified not only "Love Is the Tender Trap" by Frank Sinatra but also "(Who Discovered) America?" by Ozomatli (although it misspelled the band's name), each within about 10 seconds.

Like its Virgin Mobile compatriot, the Kyocera K10 Royale, the Nokia 2115i Shorty includes a built-in flashlight. However, you must press and hold the star key (*) to activate and turn it off. The Shorty's light is dimmer and more diffused than the Royale's, although it's still quite handy at finding buried objects in purses or keyholes in the dark. Three games--Snake II, Kart Racing, and Space Impact II--are included in the 2115i Shorty, but with only up/down keys and a monochrome screen, they have limited entertainment value. You can personalize the mobile with a variety of wallpaper, and you can download more options if you wish.

We tested the triband (CDMA 800/1900; AMPS 800) Nokia 2115i Shorty--which, like all Virgin Mobile phones, uses Sprint's PCS network--while wandering about Manhattan. Voice quality was generally good with plenty of volume, as long as you keep the finicky earpiece in position; if the earpiece is slightly off your canal's center, you'll barely hear a thing. Because the phone's mic doesn't extend down as close to the mouth as a clamshell phone's, our callers complained of hollow or ambient noise on their end of the call. On our end, voices sounded thick but clear with occasional quavering. The sound quality for the two-way speakerphone also was warbled at best and not very loud, making it fairly useless in anything but a tomblike environment.

Even at its loudest, ringer volume is low to medium, which made it difficult to hear from a pants pocket and, depending on which ringer you pick, nearly impossible from a bag. When in a pocket, the violent vibrate alert let us know a call was coming in without hearing a ring.

Thanks to the limited juice needed by the small, monochrome screen, we got 4.5 hours of talk time compared with the rated 4.6 hours. That's perfectly acceptable, but it's still less that what we're used to from most Nokias; the 9300 smart phone lasted for 8 hours. The promised standby time is 8.8 days, but we got only 6 days in our tests. According to FCC radiation tests, the Nokia 2115i Shorty has a digital SAR rating of 0.75 watts per kilogram.

I bought my tata indicom prepaid mobile when they offered the non stop mobile life offer two months back.I bought the cheapest phone indicom gem for 2199/- even though the phone is lightweight i never liked the appeal of this phone.But in the mobile life offer handsets had no nokia phone among them.The gem phone had a ruim/t-sim slot and was enabled,the advantage of which is that you can buy any ruim/t-sim enabled cdma handset of any brand and insert the tata indicom t-sim into it and the new phone is ready for this you need no handset change card .It is simple as a gsm handset.My local duty paid shop offered me 1200/-fo my gem in exchange with a nokia2112cdma.So i paid 1700/- +my old gem and got my nokia 2112.It is the cheapest nokia cdma phone avilable.The phone is having black and white display,it is cute with good build quality.the battery gives me a standby time of 4 to5 days.It is wap enabled and i am able to surf wap sites (yahoo,rediff,tatazone etc )for free which was not available with gem. Nokia 2100 is a compact featherweight. Its dimensions and weight comply with the unwritten standard of an up-to-date budget phone. It's smaller and lighter than one of the most popular inexpensive solutions - Siemens C45. Only Sony Ericsson T100 have these parameters better.

Nokia 2100 utilizes some propriety solutions. The company offers personilized covers to stress your style. You can remove the front and back panels, and the keypad. The panels do no embrace the phone entirely, but only its front, back, top and bottom, while the sides make a single whole with the base unit. In our model the base is light gray (it seems that all production samples will have this color), the covers are made of blue semitransparent matte plastic, and the keypad is rubber with a while pearl surface. It's not the best solution, - they should think of a more reliable foolproof design which wouldn't let the card out without turning power off. The slot design and battery compartment also look reliable

The keypad consists of a digital unit, a two-way scroller, a couple of soft keys, and call and off buttons. Digital keys are united in solid rows, but a good distance between the contact pads and soft rubber prevent accidental strokes and let you even work blindly. The On/Profile button is traditionally above; it is small and tight but easy to press.

The display of Nokia 2100 is monochrome, sharp and contrast with even light blue backlight of average brightness. The background doesn't look grainy, and light and dark areas are uniform. The keypad is backlight white; the light goes through semitransparent material and makes the symbols well seen in any conditions.

I personally love this phone. I brought my nokia 2100 of a friend for £10 and it is so much better than the phone I had before that which cost 6 times as much. I am not the most up to date person and I use my phone for practicality not for coolness or to take pictures. If this is like you, than this is a perfect phone.
The nokia 2100 has all the things that you need, and a few extra features too. It is very simple to use even I can do it. It ahs that basic original nokia drop down menu that clearly labels everything and unlike other phones does not have things in oddly labelled folders. For example if you want to set the time and date it is in the settings folder. The 2100 also has easy to use soft keys and simple arrows to scroll through the menu. And also ahs shortcut keys so you do not need to scroll all the way through. So, for example, if you want to go to the call register you press the menu key and the number 2 because it is the second option in the menu. You can even press 2 than 3 for example if you want to see the dialled numbers list within call register because dialled numbers is the third option in the call registers folder. SIMPLE. This phone also has some extra features such as games like snake 2, space impact, and link 5. Though I think the games you get varies depending on where the phone is from. This phone also has the option to compose your own monophonic ringtones and edit downloaded one. You can also create and edit pictures to use as backgrounds or screensavers. The 2100 also has predictive text which I personally find very useful and much faster although I know some people can not get the hang of it and find it very difficult though this is an option you can turn off.
Other special features of this phone include the storage space on the phone itself for 200 contacts (though be wary if you change phone you will loose these) and for each of these contacts you can assign a different ringtone (handy if you wish to ignore someone because you know who it is by the tone) This is an easy function to use as it is simple in the names folder of the phone as one of the options
This phone exterior is also great, it is light durable and fairly small. It has a cover that can be changed easily (though I am finding it rather difficult to find a interesting cover for mine.) the covers for this phone also have a rather cute photo frame at the back which I also find very useful for bus tickets and such so I don’t loose them on a night out. The white light that this phone has is also very useful as it is brilliantly bright and doesn’t hurt your eyes as some do when you look at it to long (also a handy torch)
The only disadvantages with this phone are that it is not colour screen or polyphonic ringtones. It cannot take or receive pictures or videos and does not have Bluetooth or infrared. These are only disadvantages though if you are the kind of person that likes to be at the height of technology and these are a must have for you. If you are an everyday person who uses there phone for texting and phoning this is a brilliant phone. The one other problem I have with this phone (which to be fair may be my fault and not the phones) is the hands free. Whenever I plug it into the charger the hands free comes on and the only way to turn it of is to stick a match in the hands free socket. I think there may be a loose part inside the phone which moves when I charge it as the hands free and charger socket are very close to each other. I am sure this is my doing but just as a warning it may be a fault in the phone.
Over all this is a fantastic phone, simple to use, cheap, cheerful, not to much of a brick and great for both first time mobile users and those of us who cant be bothered with fancy complicated technology. i have been asked to add information about the battery time. the reson i didnt do this is because my phone is quite old and i use it a lot and the battery is proberly not at its full capasity as it was when the phone was new. i think the phone is about 12 months old and after this time battery life is still amazing. it lasts for about 8 days on standby if i dont use it and has about 6/7hr talk time if the battery is fully charged. this is onlt a rough guide and im sure if your phone had a new battery in it this would be a lot higher.

*Initial Note*
My mother has just purchased this phone, and so far has been able to master it in terms of what all the functions are, and the predicted text.( Have had some funny text messages in the past where she’s obviously messed it up a tad). She feels that it has been the best phone she’s had so far (only previous to a Nokia 3310). However, my mother is not up with technology and doesn’t feel the need to have a camera phone, or any of the new models that are out at the moment. So, as I have just suggested, the Nokia 2100 is very basic.
*Features* “The Physics of the Phone”
The "Nokia 2100" is quite small and light, and if compared to some of its rivals such as the Siemens C45, and the Sony Ericsson T100, it really does stand out as being the leader of the pack, both in weight and dimensions and value for money. The ergonomics of the Nokia 2100 are generally quite good. The phone is comfortable to hold, and generally easy to use. The buttons however can be a bit of a nuisance, as they are very small and close together, meaning at times you press 2 numbers instead of 1. Also the buttons are made out of a white rubber, which after excessive use can fade (i.e the characters on the buttons” as well as a “nasty feel” (can become sticky very easily)
There is a limited selection of covers for this phone at the moment, so be prepared to have a good look round. I have tried all over the UK to find a cover for my mother, and have so far been unsuccessful. In Dubai, there is a considerably larger array, which I think is a bit far unless you’re coming here on holiday. The covers are easily clipped on and off in the normal reliable Nokia fashion, and are a little more funky to some of the other phone covers for different models on the market. On the back you have a clear plastic panel, with a funky detail underneath – nice. You can also remove this “funky detail” and replace it with a graphic off your computer, or a photograph for example. My mother however has just left it with the original detail (Wallets fine for your baby photos, but a phone?)
The "Nokia 2100" comes with a Li-Ion battery as standard and holds up without any jigs or fixers, only with the help of the back cover of the phone. The slot for the SIM-card is simple and generally standard amongst all Nokia models. Phone’s keyboard consists of two soft-key buttons for Accept and Reject calls, standard grid number buttons, and an “On and Off” Button at the top of the phone, which can also be used to alter the sound profile in which you are using e.g. Silent, or Loud.
The "Nokia 2100’s" display is monochromatic and therefore of a very high quality, however without colour capabilities. The keyboard is lighted in white light and can be read relatively easily in most light variations.
All controls of the "Nokia 2100" are traditional for the majority of phones from this manufacturer. Menu items can be opened by using the left soft key, and viewed with the help of "Up" and "Down" arrows. The right soft key is used for closing the menu item or for example, opening a context menu. This can be edited on many other models, such as the Nokia 6220 i.e. changing what the soft keys do (for example I have set on my Nokia 6220 for the down arrow key to start up the radio). This phone does not have this function, and therefore shortcuts are unavailable and the menu remains standard.
“The Menu” The main menu is common to all Nokia phones (only one menu item is displayed differently which is the alarm clock) and each menu item has an animated icon, which is a nice touch. The menu structure is very simple and easily understandable (One big advantage of Nokia phones is that they have a very user friendly menu interface)
The phonebook can store up to 200 entries, each one consisting of name, a phone number and an alternative phone number, and has a search capability installed, which can be very useful if searching through hundreds of different contacts. You can also assign tones to different numbers using the “assign tone” menu item. The messaging menu again is standard to most brands of mobile phone excluding one additional feature. There is a group option where you can send a message to a certain group of contacts i.e. sending a rude joke to a ‘mates’ group, instead of a ‘family’ group, which can make it much more convenient when wanting to send a message to a lot of people.
The call register menu also contains one interesting item. Excluding common lists of received and missed calls it contains a function that can show all prices of the calls. You will have to check with your operator to find out whether they support this – O2 is the only network my mother has used, and does work. Profiles, and settings menu are as standard..
The Alarm clock menu contains settings for the alarm clock. The signal can be normal or repetitive and has the ability to allow the user to select weekdays when the alarm clock must ring. "Siemens" mobile phones have an uncannily similar alarm clock, but unlike "Nokia" don’t have ability to ring only once in the selected time. You can also input reminders with an alarm (Task List menu) which again is very useful. The Games on the phone are just the same as any other Nokia (-boring) which include Snake 2, Space Impact and Link 5. They’re not very exciting, and if you are the avid game player, get a Nokia N-gage.
The Extras menu consists of calculator, which also works as a currency converter, chronometer, countdown clock, simple picture editor (for editing pictures for "Picture Messaging" and logos) and a ring tone composer. Some software versions also contain Chinese lunar calendar but it looks like the latest versions won’t have this feature. The quality of the calls are good and generally seem to pick up reception very well. The sound of the ring tones are loud and clear (useful for my mother who is deaf as a parrot, or a deaf parrot). It is well heard in almost all places, even noisy, so there won’t be any problems missing the calls. Vibrocall is powerful and can be well felt in almost any pocket (useless in a hand bag)
With a fully charged battery the phone will work for about 4 days. (If turned off at night). This is quite good result for such a cheap phone as the "Nokia 2100".
One point about this phone is that it has no data transfer capabilities, excluding SMS based transfers. This, to an advanced user who would want to download ring tones or pictures would have to use the “by SMS” services, which are still generally available. Conclusion
A very basic phone, which can be used as a daily planner, a basic phone, and a form for text messages. Beyond this, an alarm clock and three games. I would advise if you just want a phone for calling, with something that looks stylish at a very low cost, this phone would be ideal! If you want a phone that has a wide array of functions and technologically advanced for the age, I would give this phone a miss

So I've decided to review my phone, although when I look at the dates of the other reviews in the category, I suspect that it's long out of fashion!
I don't ask for much in a phone -- the main factor for me is price, and sturdiness, as I am stingy and tend to break things. I specifically wanted a Nokia model since Nokia has a reputation for sturdiness, and this was the cheapest Nokia I found. STURDINESS
Indeed, it seems sturdy and has survived many falls and being slept upon. Opened, it seems to be made of fewer small fragile pieces than other phones I have had.
BATTERY
Not working too well after a year. At random moments, I sometimes get cut off for "low battery" even though I had charged the phone earlier the same day. At its very best, lasts maybe a day and a half. DESIGN
It terms of looks: nothing flashy, but also nothing that anyone would laugh at (unlike the brick-sized green Ericcson I bought on a special offer and used until it was stolen by a not-very-picky thief). I like the spaceship-blue screenlight. It is bright enough that the light wakes me before the alarm does in the morning, which is a less painful awakening. I have also used as a flashlight during blackouts. It is reasonably small, light-weight, and portable. Graphics and texts are black only. Keys seem easy enough for typing and make a pleasant clicking sound when pressed.
SMS
I like the word counter as I'm typing message and the fact that I'm told when my message is long enough that it will be charged as two. However, I would like to have a confirmation stage before sending: it is too easy to shoot a message off to the wrong person. I have created a complex alphabetization message in the directory to separate people who get personal messages from people who get business ones, just to lower the chance of a disaster. The phone stores up 40 messages in an apparently random order (not chronogologically). I don't like the fact that the list of stored messages only shows the sender: I would like to see the date or some other indicator of which message is which so that I don't have to click on all of them to find the one I'm looking for.
No camera, no colors, and really pathetic graphics, but that's fine with me. There's a feature to create your own graphics, but I don't care enough (and the tools are not up to anything impressive) RING-TONES
Plenty of basic tacky ring-tones available on this phone; I was looking for something discreet, which limited my options. I settled on a beeping tone that I don't hear half of the time.
GAMES
My secret vice (okay, no longer secret) is Snake 2: I have gotten addicted to slithering that snake around and eating bugs and whatever else those blotchy little graphics are supposed to represent. I enjoy the fact that there's nothing attacking my snake: hooray, I'm at the top of the food chain. I've never bothered to learn the rules for the other games, but they look just as low-tech and pretty dull. This review has now exhausted the features that I have actually used. The Nokia 2100 is a very small phone that will fit easily into your pocket. It is also easy to use and so very suitable for anyone who is afraid of new technology.
I have had mine for nearly 6 months, conected to Vodafone. The phone was free when I signed upto a new contract which was great. It came with a standard grey cover, although you can buy other ones in different covers. The buttons on the phone are small and close together so are really suited to anyone wth big fingers as you do sometimes hit more than one at once. The buttons also have a strange feel to them which took some getting used to.
The screen on the phone is only in black and white which is quite boring and doesn't allow you to have pictures on it. The phone is munu driven with just 2 menu keys, one on each side of the phone. From the inital screen the right hand butIton takes you straight to the address book. It is very easy to add numbers to this and also to retrieve your friends numbers.
The left hand menu key takes you through the menu which has the following features: 1: Messages. This allows you to send and receive text messages. The only problem here is that it is difficult to type long messages with the keys being too small. The phone does have predictive texting that makes it slightly easier.
2: Call register. This shows all of your recent made, received and missed calls. It also shows the duration and cost of your last call which can be useful if you are trying to keep an eye on the your bills. 3: Profiles. Here is where you can customise many areas on your phone such as its ring tone and the tone it makes when you receive a text message. There is a good selection of ring tones, although the quality is a bit disapointing compared to the polyphonic tones you can get nowdays. I think that it is possible to download ring tones from the internet, although I have not done this yet with this phone.
4: Settings, This lets you set many of the settings on your phone such as it date and time. 5: Alarm clock, very important if you are going away. It saves having to pack the clock.
6: Reminders. This is useful if you have something that you need a reminder for. I only use this occasionally, although it is useful if you need to note something down and only have your phone with you 7: Games. these are a must for times when you have time to kill, such as waiting to meet someone and are bored. The phone comes with 3 games, snake 2, space impact and link 5. Snake 2 is my favourite and I have used this lots of time when I have been waiting to pick my husband up from work.
8: Extras. Includes Calcualtor, Stopwatch, composer, picture editor, and countdown timer. 9: Vodafone, This section allows you to text vodafone for information, such as the weather forcast in your area. The results cost you about 12p a time so I only use this rarely.
The phone comes with a Lion Battery which is rechargable. Mine lasts about 3 days when it has been charged up and only takes a couple of hours to charge. This will depend on your usage and condition of the battery. The battery and charger are common ones to Nokia so if you upgrade your phone it is possible to keep your battery and charger as spares. If you want a basic mobile this is a good one, but may not be suitable if you want all of the latest gadgets and gismos.

A very decent looking phone set with impressive features with excellent reception. I have been using it for aver a month now and am really very comfortable with it.
First thing that inspires you is its look so few words about looks first. A very good design that appeals your aesthetic sense.

Transparent keypad but does not look transparent at all. You will believe only when u see lightened keys.

Battery life is one of the main strength of the phone. Quick charging and lasts longer. I normally charge it around 2 times a week. For me thats really comforting specially when I am using it as an alarm clock daily and play games often during little breaks at work.
Ring Tones
=========
No polyphonic ring tones, but has 44 ring tones including around "empty" tones, dont remember exact figure of empty tones as i have replaced most of them through downloads or composer).
Yes, it has composer for ring tones. So you can add the tones that are not available with your service provider.
You can assign different ring tones to different people in your contact list just to know who is calling before you look at the display. Calculator

more than normal calculation, it converts your local currency to foreign and otherway (you have to set the conversion rate, once).
Stop watch
=========
Beside normal stop watch, you have the option to record (and later save) split times, something like while watching a race you will have a list of timings for every car with its position. Use it and you will like it. It got a count down timer too. Alarms

You can set a daily alarm and can even define the days of the week when it should ring (or other wise). for normal (one time) alarms, use "reminder" with alarm so that your daily alarm setting remains un-changed.
Overall, a worth buying product (unless you must need colour display and polyphonic tones). Light and beautiful. just go for it.

2100 is an economical mobile with some quality features. The best things that i like about it is its Alarm clock becuase it is loud and it helps me a lot in getting up early in the morning :) - The next thing that i like about Nokia 2100 is its changeable skins (Cover). There are saveral types of skins available in market and they really bring some great look to my 2100 as i change it so often.

The things i don't like about nokia is its ringtones. it has some old tradional ringtones that i am fadeup of listening. But there is empty space for 5 ringtons that you can download.
As far as the battery is concerned it is quite relaible and gives me the backup for about 2 or 2 1/2 days. The full recharging takes almost 2 hours.
Well as far as the durabality is concerned i am quite confidant about it because i have thrown it from my hand about 3 to 4 times but still it hasn't botherd me at all : ) (Thanks God)
On the whole i would recommend that if you are looking for a good relaible mobile with some features in economy then this is the best. Otherwise 2100 is no Hi Fi mobile.

This is a very good value phone for your basic needs. It is also quite small and light so will slip away easily into a back pocket or wherever.
I used to have this phone and I don't think that I ever had a patch of bad signal. It is easy to use and has everything that you would need for texting and phoning. It dosen't have polyphonic ringtones but for this price it isn't supprising. If you are looking for a cheap but reliable phone then this is the one for you. I was amused by the idea for when you slip the back cover off there is a handy place to slip photos in that shows through the back case.
It has animated screensavers SMS chat, stopwatch, countdown timer and a repeated alarm. If you are short for money or don't demand much of your phone then GET THIS NOW!

This is one handset that has come out of the Nokia range that has one key feature that even a novice user will notice...it's styling and design...a really light weight set with a sleek and sturdy design. I was not too familiar with the name cell phone and I was embarrassed at first my friend because I do not have a cell phone. Finally one day my sister gave me a gift of a mobile phone nokia 2100. So, nokia 2100 mobile phone is my first cell phone. Although this phone is very simple but at the time this phone is very useful for me. This phone is perfect for people who use a phone only for the sake of sms and calls only, and do not use it for other interests.
It has a design that was simple and not too bad. Its keypad has a soft footing so that we can type with ease. But if the phone is broken, surely the damage on the keypad and place of entry of the SIM card. Damage to the keypad is often very difficult to be pressed. if we want to write an SMS, we are required to try is to push a little bit harsh. And damage to the point of entry for the SIM card is often the phone is not responding to the entry of our SIM card is written so that the phone says "insert SIM card". But if we maintain and look after him well then it will not happen. this phone has a violent vibration as well loud enough. I have prove its vibration by comparing it with the vibration phone of my friends and often this phone that won its vibration. Its display screen only has 2 colors: black and white like a zebra. he, he, he... In my experience, this phone has a maximum of 3 hours talk time and standby time endlessly about about 6 days 6 hours or as long as 150 hours.
Like the other nokia mobile phones, the phone also can be locked by using the code buttons. On this phone, we can create monophonic ring tones and images themselves. Images here can be used as a screensaver while we make ring tones can be used as ringtones SMS and phone calls can all be arranged in the profile that we want. Other than to send and receive SMS, the phone also can send and receive pictures and ringtones to mobile phones that we make something similar. If my phone battery is exhausted, I think to restart it by pressing * # 3370 # so that makes my battery could last a little longer but if we often do this, this will reduce efficiency and battery quality.

Review:
The Nokia 2100 is the latest incarnation of Nokia's low-end phone, and it raises the bar on what is expected from a simple voice/text mobile.
SIM Surprise
The S$198 (with a two-year contract) Nokia 2100 looks a lot better than other low-end phones, such as the 3310. It has a stylish light-blue cover and a simple button layout, including two softkeys and up and down arrow keys. The only gripe we have is with the back cover, which has a different removal mechanism to the normal click-and-slide you get with Nokia phones, and is a lot harder to remove.
However, once the cover is off we were pleasantly surprised to find the battery does not need to be removed to put the SIM card in. We're not sure why this fantastic development wasn't implemented earlier, as it means that changing your SIM card doesn't wipe the time and date settings from your phone.
Built For Messaging
As we've indicated, the Nokia 2100 is a simple phone without the latest technology, but what it does do is done well. To give an example, the messages menu is the first menu in the system, which makes sense because it's the most likely to be used. It also contains thirteen different folders, covering pretty much anything you might want to do with SMS.
The phone allows the creation of distribution lists of people you commonly send SMS messages to, which makes messaging a group of people much easier. The phone also has the "Send to many" function, which we've found very useful.
The 2100 also allows you to send picture messages, of the black-and-white SMS variety. In addition the phone has the "Picture Editor" facility, which is normally hard to use for the average person. This editor has some features that make it easier to use than others.
The editor includes tools such as "Fill", "Invert Colors" and "Mirror" - which flips the image to a mirror version of itself. This makes the creation of images a lot easier; we were well pleased with ourselves when we managed to create a passable image of a cactus in front of a sunset.
Other Features
This ease of use is mirrored in the tune composer feature, which we found a lot easier to use than other composers we've come across. Although the phone is not polyphonic, this feature allows you to create your own tunes relatively easily. It was simple for us to create "Chopsticks" and the "Blackadder" theme, and while they weren't perfect they were recognizable.
The mobile includes other personalization features such as animated screensavers and downloadable ringtones. There is also a "photo window" on the back of the phone, but the plastic covering isn't clear so we're not sure how useful that will be.
The other menus are fairly standard, "Call Register", "Profiles", "Settings", "Alarm Clock", "Reminders", "Games" and "Extras". Apart from the Composer and Picture Editor the "Extras" menu includes a calculator, stopwatch and countdown timer.
The games included with the Nokia 2100 are Snake II, Space Impact and Link5, which is enjoyably difficult to play. It's the first strategy game we've come across in a mobile where the phone regularly beats us.
The Nokia 2100 weighs 85g, and is advertised as having a talktime of three hours and 20 minutes and a standby time of 150 hours. We found it lasted just over three days of normal usage.
Conclusion
All up, we find the Nokia 2100 to be the best low-end phone we've seen, and recommend it for users who don't want the frills surrounding MMS and 3G.

Overview

How many of you people out there are actually getting tired of seeing the same looking Nokia phone, which is also being marketed as a different model altogether that has one or two new features thrown in? The models within the Nokia 3300 series of phones are a fine example of this - and I’d wish they hadn’t based up to four handsets (3315, 3330, 3350, and 3410) on the same look and feel!

And for those who feel that the 3510/3510i are no different either, then you can add that to the list too!

Anyway, Nokia has recently wakened up to this fact (possibly) and have come up with a somewhat fresher design. The 2100 is the new trendsetter for market entry handsets, taking on a new physical design plus providing minor improvements in areas that are yet to be covered by some other current models.

An el-cheapo handset is not your cup of tea? Never mind - you can read up on those other reviews. But for those first-time buyers and conservationists who just wants a phone that simply does what it’s designed for, read on to find out more about the 2100! :)

New/outstanding features
The most noticeable difference between the 2100 and older models is its new translucent design, which gives off a slight sense of freshness to current phone designs. The 8310 used a similar design concept, which I believe has been welcomed by many up till today.

It does not try to impress on features. Similar to the 3310/3315, the phone doesn’t have WAP or connectivity capabilities. It’s simply a phone for making and receiving calls and text/picture messages with - probably enough for many people who don’t really give a stuff about WAP.

Oh, Nokia decided to give the 2100 a bigger phone book than before - supporting up to 100 single number entries where you can assign a specific ringtone for any one of them. It also has a simple reminder function that keeps your daily routines on-track!

Physical aspects
Sized a tad smaller than the 3300-series models, the 2100 is definitely more friendly to your jeans or shirt pockets that it calls home when you’re out and about. Although it has a more rectangular footprint, Nokia never fails to include rounded-off edges for any physical objects that you can see or touch. The use of the new BLD-3 type battery (being used similarly on the current 6610 and 7210 models) could be one of the reasons why the 2100 can be smaller and lighter.

For the keypad, Nokia has gone back to the use of a rubbery material previously found on older models like the 6110 and 7110 (and the Communicator models - but I don’t really see models like the 9110/9210 as being mainstream mobile phones). Each row of three buttons is pieced together, which makes removing and replacing the keypad set easy when the covers are changed.

Don’t get me wrong - there’s nothing wrong with going with the rubbery material. Just that it has been a while since I’ve seen the use of this by Nokia. And incidentally, the rubber keypad actually conveys the white backlighting through pretty well, matching near-perfectly with the translucent casing design too!

A new SIM bracket design has been incorporated into the 2100, which seemingly makes it easier to insert and remove a SIM card plus reducing any possible problems that may surface (for examples, “insert SIM card” messages because of a slight dislocation of the actual SIM card within its holder. A little clip/latch at the top of the SIM bracket needs to be locked or unlocked before the phone battery can be inserted or unlocked respectively.

Nokia has also made some slight revisions in the designs of the Xpress-on covers, where removal of the back cover is now done by pressing down onto a tab at the top end of the casing. Traditionally, all Nokia phones with Xpress-on covers requires the depressing of a button on the back cover, which can then be slid off and subsequently allowing the front cover to be lifted off. On the 2100, the back cover also comes off via lifting, and is actually easier to remove and replace than covers found on the 3310.

User Interface & display
The 2100 retains a similar look and feel of other black-and-white-screened Nokia handsets, but you may realise a slight difference in the type and size of the typeface used on the screen (in other words, the font for the text display). On most Nokia models, you could only fit up to nine numbers on a single line before the digits start appearing on the row above. For the 2100, ten digits fit comfortably on a single line - and not sacrificing readability either!

White backlighting also plays a part on improving screen clarity and the overall user experience (imagine squinting at the LCD screen because of lack of lighting!) The 2100 is probably one of the first entry-level handsets to use white LEDs for illumination, with most still retaining the traditional and very-boring green lights.

These slight differences aren’t all that new. If you’ve seen and/or used the 3610 before (available in Asian markets only), you will know the 2100 adopted this from there (a little clue - 3610’s hardware code is NAM-1, 2100’s is NAM-2).

However, I found that the 2100 design is more than just “based” - but more like taking the 3610 hardware design and removing whatever is not required (like WAP). Some of the inherent problems found on the 3610 are still existent on the 2100, which goes to show that Nokia isn’t all that proactive about perfecting or refining their products (for more details on this, please refer to the Problems/issues section on Page 3 of this review).

Making and receiving calls
There are a few things to take note here. For those who have or are using models in the Nokia 3300 series, they all came with the voice dialling capability. On the 2100, voice dialling is not an available feature - weird when you consider the fact that the 3310 predecessor had this, which was positioned and marketed to the same consumer segment as the present 2100 model.

Another slight problem I experienced with the review unit I had was the intermittent feedback in the audio from the earpiece. At the same time, you can hear a bit of the “buzzing” sound through the earpiece as well, which directly affects call quality. I’m personally not too sure whether these are common problems with the 2100’s - but it has been a while since I’ve last used a Nokia mobile phone with such problems.

Messaging
A standard set of Nokia messaging support is provided on the 2100. This means the ability to send standard text messages with concatenation available, SMS chat, and picture messaging.

The 2100 also offers a new feature, appropriately named distribution lists, which allows its user to set up lists that contain a specific group of numbers in them. You can uniquely identify groups by giving them a name. When paired up with the messaging functions, it allows the user to send that same message to all the people in a list with just a few simple steps. Distribution lists is a feature that’s probably very much needed in today’s texting environment.

Build quality
A revised Xpress-on cover design offers improved ease of use (removal and replacing) plus improving on the phone’s rigidity and build. Previously, Xpress-on covers required each other (front and back) to be held together - but there were still minor problems like faint squeaking sounds. For the 2100 covers, however, there are clips on the sides of the covers that actually grab onto the phone itself which can reduce the previously-mentioned problems.

Overall, the 2100 is a tough little phone that is indeed comparable in quality as compared to most other Nokia models.

Battery life
On average use, I was able to obtain approximately 2-3 hours worth of talk time, and 2-3 days standby. Comparatively speaking, the 2100 is not the best performer when it comes to energy conservation.

Being both stylish and practical, the white backlighting on the 2100 provides the illumination for both keypad and display areas. When compared to the traditional green LEDs used on other market-entry models, the white provides more-than-sufficient illumination levels plus matching any Xpress-on cover colour you may want to put on too!

Soft, translucent Xpress-on cover design

Several different Xpress-on covers are available for the 2100, each varying greatly in colour but maintaining use of a common translucent material that goes well with the phone’s white backlighting system. Whatever colour you favour, there’s definitely one that’ll be right for you.

SMS and picture messaging support, with the ability to set up distribution lists

While basic SMS and picture messaging support is included on the 2100 (alike most other Nokia models), a new feature which allows a single message to be sent to multiple recipients have been added. The distribution lists feature lets its user add names from the phone book to a list, which then can be used for simple message distribution whenever necessary. Rather than having to search for every single name and repeat this until everyone’s received it, the 2100 can do this with only a few keypresses!

Built-in picture composer (for picture messages and screen savers)

The picture composer feature allows its user to create new graphics for use in picture messages as well as for screen savers too!

Internal phone book memory

A 100-number phone book memory is built into the 2100, providing an alternate storage location other than the SIM card. This is Nokia’s first entry-level model to include this memory area.

Animated and static screen saver feature

When enabled, the screen saver feature replaces the standard one-line operator name or logo displayed full-time on default. A list of animated and static screen savers are available for choosing, while you can also use pictures that you saved previously from messages for this same purpose. And if you want to get creative, use the in-built picture composer to design your own! For animated screen savers, there are several with the current date and time displayed.

Rhythmic backlight and vibrate for ringing and message tones

The 2100 can be set to have its backlighting and/or vibration alert synchronised with the actual ringing tone selected. When I say “synchronised”, this means that the backlights will blink with the individual notes of a ringtone, and the vibration doing something along the same lines. So instead of just flashing endlessly at the same frequency, this feature can actually bring some life in your phone!

Automatic keyguard feature

An automatic keyguard facility allows the phone to enable the keypad lock automatically after a predefined timeout period. This feature becomes a convenient feature for those individuals who tend to forget to turn on this feature after making a call.

Problems/Issues?

Menu system can lag at times

Sharing a similar problem as the 3610, the 2100 has a problem of keeping up with user keypresses within particular features. For example, people who are fast at typing SMS messages on T9 will realise a slight lag between actually typing the word into the phone and it being displayed on the screen.

When performing other operations with the 2100, like going through the phone menus, this drag may not be as apparent. I found that it was just the specific features or functions that really bothered me at times, which I believed that Nokia could have rectified in this model after learning from its so-called predecessor model, the 3610.

But the worst that I encountered on the 2100 was when the calculator feature was used. For example, when you type a set of numbers in for any sort of calculation, each digit typed in will take approximately half a second to appear on the screen. So if you want the answer for 20000 divided by 5, it’ll probably take like up to 3-4 seconds. Irrespective of whether you are fast at the keypad or not or whether the calculation is a complex or simple one, this is an irrelevant matter altogether.

In Summary
The new and refreshing look of the 2100 by Nokia is certainly welcomed by me, as I feel very strongly about the overuse of the 3300-series footprint for several models up to this date. Being relatively smaller in size and retaining the same features, this phone will certainly attract users who are looking at getting their first mobile phone or also possibly doing a handset replacement - thanks to its somewhat use of soft colours and materials in the phone’s overall design.

However, as many may know, one of my biggest concerns with phones is their inability to keep up with a user’s input actions. Having to actually wait for the phone to catch up to where you are is not really acceptable, where you would think that computers and electronic items are supposed to be quite efficient (not really in the case of the 2100).

Sure, Nokia may have crammed a bit of gadgetry into the 2100 - but when you look at the likes of phones such as their own 6310i or even 3510, which both I think are great models in their own regard, “a bit” is just an understatement.

Nokia 1800 Simple and Easy

I have had this phone 8 months now and have not had a problem with it. It has been dropped many times and has never given me a problem as many other phones may have. It is extremely simple and easy to use. Although the features are limited, it is perfect for someone who is just interested in calls and texts. The design is a classic with the buttons in all the right places. Also, as there are not many features to the phone, the battery life is very good. Overall, this phone gets a 6.8 out of 10 and would recommend this phone to anyone who does not want to spend a lot or if they are looking for a simple phone that does its job.

Nokia 1800 The handset is really easy to use

Simple, elegant and useful. Contains main features that most old-fashion phone have. The handset is really easy to use. No problems with battery. Design is classic, recommended for those who appreciate classic. Have had it for about 6 months - still no complaints.

The Nokia 1800 has no speaker volume control/adjustment on the phone. The loudspeaker (using speakerphone option) is on the BACK of the phone which is totally useless. If you're never in a noisy situation or never want to put the phone down when you use loudspeaker it's a good phone for basic calls and SMS with a larger than usual keypad. The Flashlight is a good gimmick

Overall: * Pros:
1) Small, lightweight candybar design -- easily-portable in a pocket.

2) Budget pricing with acceptable technical performance -- eg. clear voice-calls, no performance lag.

3) Some useful PIM features (eg. converter, alarm, memo/reminder, calendar) -- no battery-guzzling "smart" (ie. fanciful) features that basic users seeking a simple phone for calls & messaging do not need or desire.

4) Impressive battery life -- on standby mode with minimal usage, a fully-charged cell can last for at least 1 week.

5) Reception for FM Radio (the only fanciful feature, besides games) is surprisingly good.

6) Bright nifty torch -- some might find this useful, as compared on relying on the light from the phone's screen to find one's way in the dark.

* Cons:
1) No external memory card slot for data storage -- fully-reliant on limited inbuilt phone memory (300 SMS, 500 contacts).

2) Absence of easy data-transfer mode (eg. mini-USB, Bluetooth) between phone/SIM card & PC.

3) Plasticky & slippery keypad that lacks inter-key grooves/delineations -- users with normal-sized/fat fingers probably need to use fingertips/nails to accurately select the desired key; eg. the CLEAR key is literally conjoined with the EXIT/DISCONNECT key, such that pressing CLEAR while composing a message often throws one out of the message totally.

4) Interface could have been more user-friendly (like LG's) -- eg. one can't seamlessly surf between messages in the same folder, or between folders (Inbox to Drafts to Send), w/o having to get out of the current message/folder.

5) Non-ideal build design & quality -- the back casing is a single, clip-on (not sliding) plastic piece that hides the base of the phone completely (except for the Nokia logo) -- the flimsy plastic flexes a little too much for comfort when one tries to pry it from the phone; not easy if one wishes to take out the SIM card or battery; such a design probably reduces the phone' structural lifespan as well.

6) A world-clock PIM would have been nice & useful.

* Overall: Rating: 3/5. Budget phone with technically-reliable performance. Ideal as a backup or if used occasionally, but can prove annoying under moderate to intensive daily usage due to the slippery texture-less keypad & multi-step user interface. These 2 disadvantages are tedious enough to make me consider looking for an alternative phone for day-to-day use.

The Nokia 1800 has a classic candy-bar design and weighs just 75g.

Nokia 1800 - overall phone performance

On the front of the phone is a 1.8-inch-128x160-pixel display. This is very small and very low resolution by today's standards. Although you won't be watching videos on this phone (not out of choice - the phone can't manage anything like this), the display size makes even basic tasks more difficult. In fact, it's rather nice to see a simple candy bar handset with tried-and-true design aesthetics. The feature set is equally low-key with just messaging, organizer features, and a VGA camera, and the phone succeeds reasonably well at its primary goal of making calls. On the downside, the keypad is rather stiff and the plastic skin feels a bit cheap, but the 1680 is a decent handset for casual users.
Design
The Nokia 1680 has a standard candy bar design in basic black. It may not be much in the looks department, but it's an easy-to-use and accessible design. It's also compact (4.26 inches by 1.81 inches by 0.59 inch) and lightweight (2.6 ounces). We couldn't help notice, however, that the plastic skin feels rather cheap; this is a not a phone for the accident-prone.
The display measures 1.75 inches and supports 64,000 colors (160x120 pixels). That's a rather low resolution when compared with most other cell phones, but it's perfectly serviceable for a handset of this caliber. The icon-based menus are simple and easy to figure out; they should present no problems for the cell phone novice. You can change the font size and color, but no other display options are customizable. We'd prefer a brightness control, as the screen is rather washed out.
The 1680 has a spacious and tactile navigation toggle and central OK button. It is a tad slippery, but it served us will most of the time. The square toggle doubles as a shortcut to four user-defined functions. Surrounding the toggle are two soft keys and the Talk and End/power buttons. They're covered in a comfortable rubbery material, but we'd prefer to have a dedicated clear/back button and a camera shortcut.
The keypad buttons are a mixed bag. Though they have a tactile feel, they're also a bit cramped and feel rather stiff. Dialing phone numbers wasn't an issue, but texting felt a bit cumbersome. If you're a messaging addict, we recommend giving the phone a test run before buying. On the upside, the backlighting is bright.
Unfortunately, the 1680 doesn't have a dedicated volume rocker, which means you must use the toggle to change the volume level during a call. That's rather inconvenient. On the right spine you'll find the charger port and a 2.5mm headset jack. The camera lens and mirror rest on the phone's back side above the single speaker.
Features
The 1680 has a large, 1,000-contact phone book with room in each entry for five phone numbers, an e-mail address, a URL, a company name and job title, a formal name and nickname, a street address, a birthday, and notes. You can pair contacts with a photo and save them to caller groups, but only groups can be assigned one of the eight polyphonic ringtones.
Other essentials include a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, a speakerphone, an alarm clock, a calendar, a to-do list, a notepad, a calculator, a stopwatch, and a timer. As this is a basic phone, you won't find Bluetooth or other trendy features, but you do get instant messaging, a currency and unit converter, a voice recorder, and an expense manager.

The VGA camera takes pictures in three resolutions (640x480, 320x240, and 160x120) and three quality settings. Other features include a 4x digital zoom, a night mode, a self-timer and a multishot option. It's a slim assortment of offerings, to be sure, but also fitting for a basic phone. Performance
We tested the dual-band (GSM 850/1900) Nokia 1680 in San Francisco using T-Mobile service. Call quality was just average. Though the signal was clear and voices sounded natural, the volume is rather low and the phone has a sensitive sweet spot. If you move the phone from your ear just the slightest bit, the sound level drops significantly.

On their end, callers said we sounded good but not great. They could tell we were using a cell phone, and they reported that the 1680 picks up a lot of background noise. But most of the time, we were able to hold a conversation. Speakerphone quality was unremarkable. The audio had a lot of static, and callers had a difficult time hearing us. On the whole, this is a decent phone for occasional callers, but anyone else will find the call quality disappointing.

The 1680 has a rated battery life of 7.6 hours talk time and 17 days of standby time. It has an impressive talk time of 12 hours and 14 minutes. According to FCC radiation tests, the 1680 has a digital SAR of 1.39 watts per kilogram.

NOKIA 1661 OTHER THOUGHTS

So this is one of my other phones ( me and the OH have 4 between us! ) its very very simple just like the other Nokia one which I reviewed.

The phone is a basic phone, do not expect much, it can make noises, make a simple call and send and receive text.
It was available in silver as well as black when I bought it, and I payed £10.00 for it at the time at a Vodafone store.
Unlike my other review on my other phone, this one is a slot slimmer and looks more modern, its also a more rounded shape.

Anyway, onto details in the phone.

MESSAGING.

Messaging is simple on this phone, open up the menu and there is an icon with a message on, just click on it and your bought straight to another menu with a few options, there you can create a text, look through your inbox, your sentbox, save drafts and there is also a chat feature, if someone has the same phone as you, put in their number and you can have a chat, I personally do not see the point as it just like texting! You can also send picture messaging, this is only little animated pictures though which are already on your phone, no sending 'REAL' pictures, you will be sent a code if you are sent a picture by somebody and you can view it online.

CONTACTS.

Click on contacts, which has a phonebook as the icon and you are straight into another menu, you get a few options, the first on is search contacts, you can also add certain people to your speed dial, delete contacts here and add them too.
You can have a lot of contacts, I am not sure if there is a point where it stops and you cant have any more, I have quite a lot but never get told to delete to make more space.
You can also call people and message them from the contacts list if you press the green button.

CALL REGISTER.

As with all phones you have the call register, here the screen displays your missed calls, received and dialled, all layed out perfectly and very easy to understand.
you can also keep track of how many messages you have sent and your last call duration time.

SETTINGS.

You click on here to get the settings for the whole phone, on this menu you can change your background picture ( dont get to excited you have limited options! usually a picture of a nice scenery ) you can also change your ringtone, your display settings, time and date, language, keypad settings ect..once again its all layed out perfectly and crystal clear to understand.

BATTERY.

The battery on this phone doesn't seem to be as good as the 1650, I charge it for around 2 hours every 2 days, if I dont the battery will end up going.

EXTRAS.

You get a good few things on this phone, you get a flashlight which is great if your stuck in the dark, but do be warned it does waste your battery very quickly on this phone too!
You get a converter too, handy if your working out money or weighing something, a timer, a calender and you can also set reminders, a stop watch..
As you can see a good few extras, simple enough and not too fancy.

OTHER THINGS:

There is games on this phone just like on the other one, but you get 2 different choices, instead of Snake and car racing you get Solitaire and Forbidden Treasures which are okay I guess.
There is no internet on this phone just to warn you, its very simple! so avoid if you like to go online.
There is no bluetooth or camera so you cant have anything on it, you are provided with samples though so I find it fine.

MY OPINION.

Well as you can see very similar to the other phone, except it looks completely new and different.
If I had to choose between this and my 1650 version I would have to go for that one, as the keypad on this is a lot more harder to text with and also the screen cracked on this after a few months, it was because I dropped it but with my other phone, that thing has been through hell and stands perfect to this day.
The phone has great sound, loud and clear, it also has perfect reception when on the phone to people.

Summary: Its great value for the price.

I bought this phone along with a T Mobile contract over 18 months ago whilst i was at university, the motivation for this was mainly focussed on the £300 cashback I was going to get on a £40 a month contract.

But anyway, back to the phone. this is a straight forward / no frills phone and does what it's meant to do. It's probably worth around £15 so can't really complain in this day and age where the phone to get is around £100 - £150!

I say no frills but it does offer alot - a very average camera, media storage (minimum), organiser, games, messaging and web.

Although I have never used the web intentionally (yes a few times in my pocket unlocked counts as far as billing is concerned unfortunately!) it takes the centre option when looking at the menu, this i find a little annoying as I, like most people use the mobile primarily to call people, surely that should take centrepiece?

My favourite use other than calling or texting is the organiser, it's very handy for people like me who are very forgetful - I use it remind myself about shopping, recording something, telling my girlfriend happy birthday.. so many uses! I like it because simply it's an alarm that reminds you why you set an alarm in the first place!

--The Moans--

When I'm hurridly texting someone, it takes one button, the red hang up button, to accidently be hit ahd the whole screen disappears, admittedly the text is saved in drafts but if you have more than ten messages saved on it, it's very slow!

You get what you pay for, I didn't pay alot for this so I didn't get alot for it, a bit like Ryanair really - can't complain!

I bought this phone about a year ago now, to replace my old Siemens. Having looked around I found the best deal at the time with the tariff company I wanted to be with was the Nokia 1661 from Virgin which, at £20 with £10 credit already on it, was good enough for me. NOKIA 1661 Design

The design is nice and lightweight, in black and grey/white and slips easily into most, if not all, pockets. All the buttons are easy to use, and about the right size, and the ports are nice and easy to get to, on the left hand side. The screen is large-ish, for such a small phone, so its viewable quickly, and the text isn't too small. It even comes with a light at the top, which I've found to be indispensable when looking for things in my bag and car. The back of the phone is really difficult to remove though, when/if you need to get to the battery and sim card. I even managed to scratch the back of my phone up trying to get it off the first time to put the battery in.
NOKIA 1661 Features

I mentioned before that it has a light, which is very useful. Aside from this, it has all the basic features; you can phone and text - but theres no internet or image messaging - and you get a radio and a headphone set with the phone too, if you wanted to use them. There are three pre-loaded games: Snake Xenia, Sudoku and Beach Rally, but all of them run down the battery fairly quickly, particularly Snake and Beach Rally because of the amount of colour/movement. The ringtones on the phone aren't the best but there's a fair range, and the alarm on the phone can be set and then the phone turned off to save battery and it'll still ring at the allotted time. It also tells you when your message has been sent, which is a nice extra that wasn't available on my old phone. The preset 'modes' are quite good as well, and customisation is easy, because the menus are simple and uncluttered.
NOKIA 1661 Other Positives

The battery can last for up to two weeks (in my experience) and still have a bar or so left, although this obviously depends on usage. The volume on the phone is nice and clear too, even when it isn't actually set that loud, and the very useful option of having it completely silent (not even vibrate, just lights) is brilliant for when you're in class or in an appointment, but still want to be alerted without disturbing anyone else.
NOKIA 1661 Other Negatives
It doesn't really have many features, and this might turn people off of the phone. Its also a simply design and isn't particularly flashy, so appeal is limited to those whom wish for just a working phone without all the added sparkles. It has a long initial load screen set, which can be irritating, but it can be skipped through by pressing buttons.

Summary: Good for someone who just wants a phone for calls and messaging.

I am not big on mobile phones and in no way a fashion victim, i have a really great expensive phone that i got last christmas but i hardly use it. My mobile is usually in the bottom of my bag switched off. However when i was in town last week i picked up the noika 1661 mobile from the carphone warehouse as it was so cheap i thought i could top it up and leave it in the car for emergences'.

I love this phone so simple to use and i like it better than my own for that reason. The handset cost only £15.00 and comes with an o2 sim card. The handset is quite small slim and light, i charged it for 12 hours and put the sim card in under the battery easy to do. The screen is 2-3 inches and can see and read the screen clearly, the buttons and a reasonable size and easy to push this is a problem i have had with my touch screen phone. Yes this hone is so basic it allows you to text and call. Only other features on the phone has an alarm, calendar, calculator and a phone book for storing number on. I was quite surprised to find there was no camera on the phone as it look very modern in design not that i care much for a camera. The battery lasts up to 6 days without charging.
I will recommend the nokia 1661 handset if like me you want basic easy to use phone and only need to make a call or send a text then this is the ideal phone.

I bought this phone simply because it was the cheapest one available in the shop and to my surprise and delight, 12 months later it is still in perfect working order and I have had no problems what so ever with it. This phone is perfect for someone who wants a phone to do only the things a phone are meant for - to ring people and send text messages.

The casing is solid and will survive a few drops with no problems (the battery doesn't even fall out!) The battery life is great too - it can last for weeks without needing to be charged. Additional tools include an alarm and timer, a calendar, calculator and a couple of simple games to name but a few. You can also personalise backgrounds etc much like other, more expensive phones. The phone also looks nice, unlike some cheap ones and is small and light so can fit easily in a pocket or small handbag.

If you are looking for gadgets and gimmicks this is not for you, but as a purely functional phone look no further - this has everything you need for a fantastic price!

Summary: For the price you'll pay this can't be beaten

I recently bought one of these as an emergency only phone for the in-laws. I bought it from Virgin on a special offer of the phone being free when you purchased £15 credit to put on the phone - a cracking offer in anyone's book!

The reason I bought them this phone was that it was specifically sold to me as being designed for "older" persons, who need a very basic handset. My in-laws aren't elderly by any means, but there knowledge of mobile phones and technology generally is terrible - this is the first mobile they had!

For this review, sensibly, I will start at the beginning.

The box that the phone comes in is tiny - Nokia seem to have finally worked out that they do not need to pack their tiny phones into massive boxes filled with cardboard. The box is very small, and only contains the bear necessities i.e. the phone, charger, battery, radio headset, and a small instruction manual.

The actual phone itself probably isn't as big as it should be, if it is designed specifically for the elder, less informed generation. It's vital stats are 100mm x 40mm x 10mm. Because the phone is relatively small, the buttons are quite close together - this will not bother my in-laws, but if you were buying this phone for much older people, they may struggle with the fact the buttons are right next to each other.

The keypad layout is very clear, and reverts back to the old school Nokia layout - there are no unnecessary buttons on this handset.

The features of the phone itself are very basic - the most adanced technology it offers is a radio and a colour screen. There is no camera, for instance. I personally see this as a good thing - Nokia have probably found a niche in the market here for people who just want a phone for making and receiving calls, not for doing their weekly shopping and reading their horoscopes on!

Because the features of the phone are so basic, the battery life is huge. On standby with a full charge the battery will last 475 hours, according to the salesman! That is a tad shy of 20 days, which for any phone is phenomenal. On call time the battery will last just over 4 hours, which is still plenty enough for most people.

As I said, the features of the phone are basic, which makes it a very easy phone to get used to and find your way around. The screen is very good quality, and is very clear and legible - again, ideal for the older generation.

The overall feel of the phone is quite cheap and plastic'y, but at the end of the day, it is a cheap phone! The case is made entirely of quite thin plastic, so I can't imagine it would last particularly long if you started throwing it around.

In terms of reliability, I cannot really comment as they have not had the phone for long, but I will keep this review updated with their progress.

Overall, if you are after a very cheap, basic mobile phone then this is without doubt the one for you - I find it quite refreshing to see phone manufacturer's going back to basics with handsets - this is ideal for those who do not have as good a grasp of technology as others.

Summary: If you are looking for a cheap, basic phone then this is the one for you!

Gosh, it seems everyone is just overwhelmed by this phone !! Not ONE SINGLE complaint about it in all 12(yeah 12!) useful comments, geez, that must be a great phone then huh ?
The fact that this superspecial swell Granny-will-love-it phone-look-a-like has a MAJOR BUG in it, just doesn't seem to bother anyone at all! But that's probably because these reviews are nothing but propaganda, written by the people who sell it and get money from Nokia themselves.
Check the web for "Nokia 1661 white screen hangs", you'll get thousands of hits, either disguised commercials or genuine people who fell for your lah-dee-dah 100% sunny reviewtisement scams.
The KNOWN ISSUE with this Nokia 1661 is that it stops working whenever it does....and it does this by shutting down, restarting en showing only a very bright, white lit lcd-screen and keypad, after which it cannot be shut down without removing the battery. The Vulcan Death Grip doesn't work either (Pressing Asterix(*), the number 3, the Green Send button and then turning it on with the power-button, keeping the 4 buttons pressed until it allegedly resets to factory defaults) So keep those positive reviews coming ! Bad news just brings people down, Right !?

Summary: Always a blank white happy lcd screen, and keypad, at least I don't run out of credits!(can't call)

I purchased my Nokia 1661 in the aftermath of a water damage accident which occurred when my old phone sailed hopelessly into extinction.

At the time both my daughters were at university, and I had a moderate need for a phone, but not the necessity for a large number of fancy features. Being able to call folk in emergencies, and to be contactable when needed was my main requirement. I was, however, looking for something stylish and compact, which would look reasonably good when taken out of my handbag.

Now that I am home based the need for features such as mobile internet were not mandatory, and when travelling I tend to borrow my husband's as he has a rather fancy PDA if I want to access information on the move.

The main advantage I see in this phone is that it is simple to use and inexpensive to purchase. Currently available from The Carphone Warehouse for £4.95 on pay as you go, this represents incredible value for money. I recently purchased one for my elderly father too; this was to be his first mobile, as he needed to be in contact with home after a recent operation.

I know there are many people in my position who simply require a basic phone, and in my case although I would, of course, enjoy one with more features and attributes, it isn't justified as I have no business or personal need for these on a daily basis.

What I would like to do now is to give you my opinion of this phone. This will not be the spec which you can get from any website, but the actual feel of owning the device.

So what can you expect from this phone? First of all I think it is compact, it also has rounded edges, which make it really comfortable and easy to hold. The keys are, in my opinion, easy to use, but I would point out that my father struggled with them as a novice user, and in retrospect I should have purchased a larger keypad for him. The phone is described as having large keys for easy typing, but they still presented a challenge for Dad. I have since discovered a website which deals in big button phones in particular at www.silverphone.co.uk. There are other phones too from the major companies which may offer keys which are more bulky, so if you have any doubt shop around first. I thought he could manage it, but he found it tricky - his large fingers seemed to span two numbers with this model, leading to incorrect dialling and frustration. To some extent I think this is due to inexperience, but if you have an elderly person in mind then I would suggest that you take into account whether or not the person has had any experience of using mobile phones before purchase. I found the keys perfect for me and easy to use.

What I really love about my phone is that it is incredibly lightweight at only 86 grams, so carrying it around with me all day is no problem at all. It has a bright screen and of course you can personalise this. I elected for a field of French lavender and a Provence style house in the distance.

The battery life is superb. I recharge mine fully each Monday and this is sufficient to last all week. This is a fantastic improvement on my older Nokia which did a few days at best.

The phone has the ability to store up to 500 contacts in the phone book, if you are lucky enough to have that many friends or work contacts, and you can store up to 250 SMS messages on the phone at any one time.

One feature I really like is that the phone has an integral flash-light. For me this is so useful as I often visit The Outer Hebrides in the depth of winter. My house has no street lights nearby, and this feature allows me to access the key hole beautifully on even the darkest Hebridean night.

It has a speakerphone for hands free phone calls, speed dialling, which is so useful for the elderly as numbers can be pre-entered, and associated with a single key. There is also automatic redial and call waiting and an FM radio. There's even the business option to start a conference call between you and two other participants, not that I have any need for this, and one would assume most who do have already a PDA in their possession. There is also a calendar and a couple of pre-loaded games. For me these features are not important, I only want to be able to talk and to send and receive texts, and there is no camera either, but I have a good camera anyway so this is not important to me. There is, however, an alarm which is handy when staying in hotels.

There is a good choice of ringtones and wallpapers, but you can't upload your own choices. I was more than happy with what I chose from the options though, and have quite a unique ringtone in place, as well as a beautiful rural French scene for my wallpaper which suits me perfectly.

I think this is a superb phone if you are someone like my youngest daughter who is constantly losing her contract phones. Even this year on holiday with us, she managed to drop her phone on the wild-flower meadows which run along by the sands in the Outer Hebrides. Hours of scouring the daisies and buttercups yielded nothing, and she went home to purchase a basic phone - along the same lines as this basic Nokia 1661.
This brings me on to another point. This is a perfect phone to take on holiday; especially if you are going somewhere where there is a danger you could be mugged. This phone looks stylish and expensive, and could be handed over in a moment, and could diffuse a sticky situation preserving your life and your bank balance. Even if you have a fancy contract phone, it could pay you to leave that one at home and opt for this one for a couple of weeks.

The only point I have found which is slightly negative is that there seems to be no way of editing a contact's name once saved, but you can edit the number itself.

So in conclusion I would say that this phone is an island - you can't plug it into a computer to share data and the like, which is what you would expect from a basic phone. You really are buying simplicity.

One final point, I chose Vodafone for my network but the phone will be sold with many networks to choose from. The phone is supplied in a box and comes with a free charger as standard.

If you just want a simple phone with excellent battery life which looks aesthetically pleasing this is a good choice.

At last a phone that functions simply while retaining standard features of phones we know today. Some may be surprised that this device doesn't have a camera, I like the fact that it lacks this since it helps cut out any unnecessary features. If your looking for a phone that can text, make calls and act as an emergency light source then this is the best bet for you.

Typically phone batteries last a couple of days, this one can last up to 6 days without charge provided you turn it off at night; ideal for camping holidays or a festival.

Entertainment hasn't been cut out of the equation with this one, it comes with three games - Sudoko, Beach Rally and Snake Xenzia. If you have the correct headphones you can use this phone as an FM radio.

One downfall of this device is the way texts are stored, each message you send stays in a "Sent items" folder, this can cause a problem if you text allot.

After breaking/losing a handful of phones I decided that my safest bet was to buy a cheap phone just to get me by, after all, my phones always had a load of features, none of which I ever used.

For under a tenner I was expecting a brick, something that would pull my jeans down if I put it in my pocket - I was wrong. This phone is slim and lightweight, no it doesn't look particulary trendy but it does everything I need it to, text and talk.

The ringtones sound very 1980's, polyphonic is so last season but at least I can hear it over all the other common tones on the tube! The best being the cockerall and frog!

Texting is a doddle, predictive text makes it even easier. There is the usual phone book, you can't assign ring tones but hey-ho.

Useful extras include a torch, speaking clock and there are even some games! There is no bluetooth, camera or MMS so you can't have any pictures on there of loved ones.

Battery life is amazing as there are no useless applications to drain it.

Overall this phone is very basic, easy to use and comes highly recommended.

Summary: Great basic phone, you pay little, you get little.

In between making a bit of a mess of my fairly expensive 'pay as you go' phone, and scouting round for a fairly cheap contract deal, I was in desperate need of a cheap phone to keep in touch with people. So, after looking round town in pretty much every shop (and market stalls), I found that this unspectacular looking nokia was my best option. Priced at £15 from 'phones 4 u', I accepted that for the time being, I'd have to make do with a rather featureless phone.

I was slightly surprised they still made phones like this, something that does what a phone was originally intended to do, and..well, not much else to be honest. What you get is pretty much what you see with this technophobe friendly piece of equipment. You have your basic mobile phone button structure that is fairly rare these days (2 call function buttons and 12 number/letter keys, set out in 3 colums), an average 1.8 inch LCD screen, and a central navigation button.

The phone's design isn't too bad, although I wouldn't exactly use the world appealing. Fairly tall but nice and slim, it easily slips into you're pocket, and the absence of a touch screen meant my phone spent less time calling people without me noticing than usual!

It does have some basic feaures other than the 'call' or 'text' options. Sure you won't find any bluetooth capabilities here, nor will you find a camera, but you have a handy flashlight on the top right of the phone (actually came in handy a few times!), an fm radio, and pre-loaded games such as the addictive classic 'snake'.

So, what did I really think of the time I spent with this phone? Well, I'll start by saying it is cheap, practical, and as such does exactly what it says on the tin (so to speak!). I found it a sterdy dance partner (strong after being dropped on nights out), and still use it to this day when I go out of a night. The reliability it holds may well appeal to those who need a mobile but struggle with - or even can't be bothered with - technology and it's advances. I've never had issues with battery life (my phone is on 24/7 and used on a regular basis for texting and calling), I charged it maybe once a week.

I do have a new phone, but as mentioned, this is still used when on a night out, and was definitely worth the small investment. Although I'd recommend this phone, I do so to those who have read the specifications. What I mean by that is, this phone will suit some people perfectly, and at it's price, would be a great investment. To anybody looking for a more advanced up to date phone, something with a camera, bluetooth, mp3 etc. capabilities then this is not for you and don't bother buying it.

I must mention that over the last few months I have noticed this to be a popular phone with many of my student friends purchasing one of the own. The reason being of course, many phones have suffered a night out of doom, and this is a cheap temporary solution to keeping in touch with people! You need to assess your own needs before buying this phone, but top marks to nokia for filling this area of the market (where there is little cometition) with a sterdy reliable, and affordable phone.

I initially bought this phone as a temporary cheap replacement for my broken previous phone until I invested in a better one. However I'm now in my 8th month of using it !

It has to be the one of the most basic phones around, and you pretty much get what you pay for.

Battery:

The battery is absolutely excellent !! Can go for about three days of average use on a single charge, and takes around an hour to charge to 100% !!

Phone Calls:

Never had a problem with quality, and the earpiece speaker is more than adequate ! However, the loud speaker is not the best of quality and voices can appear muffled.

Texting:

This is one of the negatives of using this phone. I personally find it a pain to text ! The keys feel poorly made and sticky. They require a lot of pressure to work.

When you want to delete something you have just texted, you have to press the delete button for each letter, as holding it down deletes everything you have just typed !! However there is an option to undo this.

The result is that you end up hitting the delete button in quick succession and the phone cant process it fast enough. So when you've finally deleted what you want, the phone continues to delete most of the rest of the message !!

The only solution to this is being very patient !

Phonebook:

As most other basic Nokia phones, easy to use, can save multiple numbers under each contact. Even a selection of cartoony faces for each contact !

Entertainment:

This phone comes with three games, which are actually very entertaining !!

Comes with Snake, a driving game, and Sudoku !

Sudoku is by far my favourite, but they all work really well !!

My father is a builder and goes through phones like no tomorrow. The most recent bought is the Nokia 1661. As he's got a contract sim we searched around for a cheap phone that would hopefully last a little longer than the expensive phones he normally has.

The phone comes packaged in a small box, approximately Length -4" x height - 2" x depth 3 inches. On the bottom of the box I am told that the product held inside is a Nokia 1661 and it has
* A colour display
* One touch fm radio
* One touch flash light and speaker
* Long battery life
* Loud ringing tone
* & a large phonebook that holds up to 500 names.
This is also printed in six other languages. By the side of the English written details are three images, a front side and back view of the phone.

Inside the box I had a petite Nokia 1661 that measures 13.5mm deep, 45mm wide & 108mm tall and weighs just 82grams. As well as the phone there is the battery, a charger, a Nokia user guide, Ear phones, an O2 terms and conditions booklet, a pay & go leaflet and lastly and O2 pay & go sim card.

Removing the back to insert the sim and battery is very simple compare to many phones we have had in the past, it just slides off. Once this is done you can switch on and start using your new phone.

For my dad who finds it a bit hard to grasp the concept of technology, the original Nokia layout is perfect for him as he tends to always stick with the trusty Nokia and has done for a number of years. Although he does have difficulty finding the flashlight and calculator, am sure he'll get used to it very soon though.
I would say it's a must have for first time buyers or for anyone looking for a cheap phone.

The phone was very reasonably priced at just £9.99, but with all pay & go phones you now have to purchase £10 airtime, which still leaves it at a good price of £19.99. The only downside of this is that I now have a sim card with £10 credit on that will never get used by myself.

All in all I think this is an excellent phone for budget buyers, especially with its bargain price. I would definitely recommend this product.

If you are looking for a cheap phone with the basics then the Nokia 1661 really is a great choice of phone. The design is simple and also very light weight. I bought mine from Carphone Warehouse for the grand price of £15 and its just perfect as all I needed was a phone to answer and send texts on, you do get other added benefits with this phone though. I use O2 as my operator and as soon as I bought this phone they gave me £20 free credit just for keeping my services with o2 - amazing, more credit than the phone was worth.

The phone has various other applications such as colour display, one touch FM stereo, one touch flashlight and loudspeaker, loud ringing tone (which can be controlled) and a large phone book which hold up to 500 entries at maximum capacity.

There are also many other additions to the Nokia 1661 such as a vibrate mode, text and multimedia messaging, a calculator, a unit and currency converter, a budget spreadsheet, a countdown timer, a calendar, a stopwatch, and an alarm clock. The 1661 comes with 32 polyphonic ringtones, but you can create your own tones using the composer application, I have tried this and found it very hard but I have heard it can be done.

The handset comes with three games NaturePark, Snake, and Sudoku, I find Sudoku passes the time nicely and Snake has always been a winner.

Once the phone is fully charged then you dont usually have to recharge it for another week or so which is very handy as some phones have such high power output they need charging on an almost daily basis - such an annoyance.

Overview I really do rate the Nokia 1661 and will stick with it, it has all I need and more.

I got this phone for £15 in Phones 4 U, originally as a back up phone whilst my touchscreen Samsung Jet was sent off to repairs.

Suprisingly, I found it much easier to text and do everything with this phone.

I don't have to pay insurance on it because who would steal this phone, and if anyone did it costs £15 to buy a new handset.

I have had no problems at all and like the thought of not having to worry about anything happening to it because it's a cheap phone.

Much prefer clicking buttons then a touchscreen too as you can't miss letters!

It is fast to load up there are never any delays and there are a choice of themes to set your phone to.

Comes with a USB lead and a charger.

Other than a camera it has all you need out of a phone and I like using it.

For a low budget phone I would definetely reccomend this phone. It has more applications then my Samsung Jet!

I have sent my Samsung to a phone for cash website and got £95 out of it.
I am now using this as my primary phone.
It is bedecked in stickers because it does't matter if I mess around with it.

I bought this phone simply because it was the cheapest Nokia available at the time. Nokia mobiles are probably one of the simplest to use, and for pure functionality, this is fine. If you want gadgets, gizmos and sexy, this is not for you (although it does have a handy torch), but it works and is inexpensive. I would say it doesn't seem too good at picking up signal and also has very little memory. My previous phone was 5 years old, with reminders stored on it for virtually every day of the week of those 5 years. This phone, however, can't seem to handle more than about 10 reminders, and then you must delete old ones before you can store more. This seems utterly ridiculous to me, as I used my old phone as a personal organiser too and now I've had to return to old-fashioned paper diaries, so am not a happy bunny.

Nokia has some excellent budget phones with good battery back-up and some extra features. In the line of budget series Nokia 1650 also has its recognization with its design and quality display with good Lithium Ion 1020 mAh (BL-5C) battery.
I am going to discuss all features step by step with advantages and disadvantages also.

Nokia 1650 Design and Display

Nokia 1650 has a classic design but there is no label of classic phone, and it has a slightly larger display in these categories of phones with 128 x 160 pixels, 1.8 inches, 35 x 28 mm display. Previous phone from Nokia 1600 was also meant for budget category but the display size was small and now it has been upgraded with 128x160 Pixels display. If we think about its dimension than it can be consider as middle size phone with 104.2 x 43.8 x 17.8 mm, but the weight is also reasonable with 80gm. So phone is easily pockatable and portable.

Nokia 1650 Memory
Phone doesn't have camera and music player so that there is no mean for providing memory card slot or higher capacity memory. Phone has 8MB of shares user memory for applications, contacts and data storage. If we think about the memory than it is excellent in this type of phones. Many other phone in budget category doesn't have such kind of memory so that Nokia has provided good memory in this phone.

Nokia 1650Connectivity

The worst point of this phone is its connectivity solutions, and there is no connectivity has been provide3d in this phone even there is no GPRS connectivity. If we think about its display size than it has good 128x160 pixel display and it can give good display for GPRS but there is no connectivity. I am unable to understand, why Nokia haven't provided any connectivity? in such kind of good phone. Phone got less popularity due to its lack of such kind of important features. Phone has good 8 MB of shared memory but if you want to load JAVA application from your computer than there is no way to do this. No mean of providing such kind of memory without any connectivity feature.

Nokia 1650 BatteryThe excellent feature of this phone is its high capacity battery, with Standard battery, Li-Ion 1020 mAh (BL-5C), and Phone has superb battery back-up with more than 8 hours in talk and more than 5 hours for FM playback. BL 5C battery is good and popular battery in Nokia phones with its superb back-up. Most of Budget category phones from Nokia has this battery and they have good stamina time.

Other important feature of this phone is its FM radio, but it only can provide mono sound. Phone also has in built handsfree so that we can hear FM radio without depending on earphone.
Over all conclusion
Phone has good display and design but there are some important features are missing so that it requires some upgradation in terms of connectivity, than only it can get popularity.

The phone also has a speaking clock function, which sounds good to the children. If somebody notes then take a look to the key pad and it is almost dust free. We can also say that this phone is good for people looking to have a good back-up phone for their high-end phones, or those who're travelling, and wanna keep the battery of their main phone in-tact for music/camera use. Also if some parents thinking for buying first cell phone for their children then this will be a good choice in reasonable price.

The 1650 handset is a simple and right, but it felt pretty good when their price in the eye. A good example is the back of the battery cover easily slides out, but notes in his place and not rattle or if they are connected. The biggest problem is the control in 1650. Unfortunately, the keys feel elastic, which means that they are calling the company on the button. For messaging, this means that something is wrong, the sharp curve and a few keystrokes lag does not help, with the two.

The screen has a resolution of 128x160 and supports up to 65k colors, although the view was small and difficult to read in direct sunlight. The quality is fairly good, while the cable also works well and adequate and good. The included headset as a handsfree device and features that make calls, and key clip in the socket. Radio reasonable, but not offer exceptional quality. Auto-tuning is for the navigation keypad, while up to 10 presets can be stored and then accessed by clicking with the left and right, or press a key on the keyboard.
Other features include a wide range of personal information management functions such as a calculator, convert the original application, timer, calendar and stopwatch. Nokia also set the tone composers, a Chinese calendar and a flashlight, which is at the top of the handset and allows you to search at night. Composers to create a tone polyphonic ringtones, but I find both standard as well as a ring tone may have suffered heavily. Perhaps the biggest is in Bluetooth, and even after the results should be a standard feature on the Nokia 1650th

Nokia 1650 Other THOUGHTS I was recently shopping around for a cheap phone and managed to get this one from the Carphone Warehouse for only £10 which is an amazing deal!
I bought it as a pay as you go phone and the only additional requirement is that you also buy £10 of credit from a choice of a few different network providers. The phone even comes unlocked so you could give the sim card and £10 credit to somebody else to use if you want and use your existing sim card. I am not sure how they have managed to arrange such a cheap deal but the phone normally costs around £30 unlocked from other retailers.
The phone itself is well designed, very light and has a large colour screen. The battery also lasts a long time once fully charged. I only need the phone to make calls and send and receive text messages and it is perfect for this. At such a low price it is also well worth considering as a spare phone. It also has a bright torchlight on it which is useful if you every find yourself stumbling around in the dark! Brilliant!

Nokia 1650 Other THOUGHTS My phone has recently broke so I needed to get an easy to use phone while my other one was being fixed. This phone was recommened to me and i would also recommend this phone to other people who need an easy to use phone.
Even though it doesn't have all the latest up-to- date features that still doesnt stop this phone from being good. It has a nice exterior look. Also it has a good quality colour screen. Moreover it's a great size so it fits into your hand nicely and fits into your pockets easy. I have also found that it is a quite strong phone because i am clumsly, i tend to drop phones a lot. But still i havent had any problems with this phone but i did with the iphone. This review is based on the fact that im using this phone for an easy to use one until mine gets fixed. As a result i personally think that there is no disadvantages to it .
But it if it wasn't based on this fact then there would be a few disadvantages such as:

no bulit in mp3
no bluetooth
internet is very poor

Nokia 1650 Other THOUGHTS The loudness of ringtone is a little slow, I think this model is not so good for people who have a very good speed of msg writing mainly due to the two factors..one is that its keypad is sort of pressed and hard.. second is because its software is fairly slow and it will not respond in parallel.But now they have brought out an updated version of software i think.
It is a cheap handset , and like other cheap handsets of Nokia is a good value for money , the additional radio gives it an edge.

Nokia 1650 Other THOUGHTS i have been using this phone for quite a while and I am not very happy with this phone..its battery is just okay and not a very long lived.moreover its biggest dissatisfactioon is its keypad which embosses out every time and that thing bulging out looks so ugly..personally speaking..u can buy this phone but will not be very happy with it..The phone has also other options like call swaping..conferencing etc.Now,i m planning to buy a new phone.but the display screen of this phone is very good..which makes u see it even in extreme sunlight.What else should i tell about this phone.....?This phone has a good collection of themes and other stuff but keypad is dissapointing..so i prefer not to buy it

The 1611, let me start by saying, is a big, heavy phone. It's battery alone weighs just slightly less than a 3330. The display has room for 16 characters (text only, no logos).
It is, however, a highly amusing phone nowadays. It still has most of the features of modern phones, and it is particularly reliable and durable (models around today have been working for six or seven years) I own one of these phones and still use it on a regular basis.

Phonebook editor. Although, being around for six years means that it does have some very bad parts. Unfortunately, it emmits large amounts of radiation, which is off-putting to many buyers. It has no picture messages, the screen is very small and it does not have very strong reception.
But, if you simply want a mobile phone so that you can phone people on it and nothing more, this is perfect. Also on the plus side, its battery can be recharged by solar power, and it is quite strong. I bought my 1611 for just less than £5 and for that it has to be worth it. If you are not afraid of the embarrasment it will cause you, the microwaves, and the large weight, I recommend it.

Nokia 1610 was a popular mobile phone model manufactured by Nokia. The model was published in 1996. It complemented the Nokia 2110 business model, but had significantly less features.

The phone had a monochromatic display which could show two rows of text at a time. The operating manual did not mention a possibility to send text messages, but at least units sold from 1996 and onwards included the function. The phone used an external rigid antenna, but had a groove on the inside of the battery to accommodate a pull-out type antenna. The 1610 used a credit card size SIM-card, and was powered by a NiMH type battery with a capacity of 600 mAh.
