Jolla reveals its FIRST SailFish powered Device (Android Compliant)

It is finally here, the first Jolla device and it looks.... Different from anything I have ever seen before.

Incase you are wondering what's Jolla? Well, Jolla is a smartphone company that comprises of Nokia's former MeeGo Team, they came together to produce what you see before you.

It's no longer called MeeGo, but goes by the name SailFish and last week the Jolla team showed us what this SailFish OS can do...

And the unveiling of the OS was done at an event in Finland (quite appropriately , here it is, presented by Marc Dillon, co founder of Jolla.

But that's just the OS, what about the hardware? what will we hold in our hands?
Jolla showed off its first device

I didn't know what to make of it, it's no N9 that's for sure.
It's like 2 really thin phones were fused together, it is buttonless (all touch) just like MeeGo was intended, using full gesture features and like N9, it multi-tasking is phenomenal.

The whole device, look and feel of the OS screams class! This is an OS "unlike" any other, just check out the hands on video below.

replaceable battery, unlike the uni-body style that the N9 and Nokia employ.

What's interesting about this device is that it is Android compliant, meaning it could very well run Android apps! that's a game changer but we will see if it does help when the device becomes available later this year.

and with Android flexibility and open source, just imagine what this Jolla team would have done with MeeGo (under android) if they were given the chance, Nokia would have owned android by now.
I don't want to sound like I'm whining, that ship has sailed so...

Then this is a nice video on how to mix these two apps (with the help of another photo app: PhotoGrid) to create awesome custom luxury car collages.

The Asphalt 7 Heat is $0.99 (worth it, if you love cars and are probably going to see Fast and furious 6 later this week).
Photogrid app is free, and a surprisingly good photo app.
But you will have to shell out a mere $1.49 for the unofficial instagram app, intelligently called Itsdagram though you can wait for the official app which might be free, but there is no confirmed news on when it will come and if it will be free.

Nokia announce the Lumia 925

With all the hype following this event, it turned out to be a huge let down, I guess maybe it's because expectations were high, riding off the mild success of the Lumia 920, we expected Nokia to WOW us with a follow up to it.

Today Nokia launched the Lumia 925 at an event in London and I am NOT impressed.

The Lumia 925 is another variant of the Lumia 920, and just like the Lumia 928, it's a 4.5inch AMOLED screen, dual core CPU Snapdragon S4, 1GB memory, 32GB storage, with its aluminum uni-body (technically it isn't even all round Aluminum, this just goes round the edges... lame!).

This device is everything your Lumia 920 is, but only lighter, thinner and it gives you the option to choose wireless charging by buying a wireless charging case.

The camera doesn't look to have improved from what we already have with the Lumia 920/928, the only announcement feature-wise would be the Nokia Smart Camera App which is kinda like the HTC Zoe app that joins different frames together for one cool picture.

There's nothing to see here folks.

I guess I'm only happy for T-Mobile as they will finally be getting their flagship Nokia WP8 device, and giving the recent change in T-Mobile's billing and plans, it should be a hit.

The device should be available from next month; T-Mobile in US, Vodafone in a few European countries and also in China.

The device will be priced at 469Euros before taxes and subsidies.

Overall, there's nothing to see here folks, Nokia just announced a Lumia 920 variant for T-Mobile.

I wasn't impressed today. Though I welcome the addition of this device to the Lumia 92x family, I was rooting for something more. All eyes will now look to Nokia World scheduled for the second half of this year

Nokia Asha 501: Start of a New Generation

Nokia announced the Nokia Asha 501, the next generation in the Asha series, the Asha 501 is obviously inspired by the combo of both the Lumia 920 and Asha 105, it's shaped like a bar of soap, but make no mistake it isn't one, it packs a whole bunch of features for a low end smartphone, it is impressive what Nokia is doing at the low end.

choices, but that's not all as they will come with red headphones.

What's exciting about the Asha 501 isn't just the outer appearance, its also has a lot to do with how it looks inside, the asha 501 comes with the new OS (powered by smarterphone), if you remember smarterphone was a mobile development company that was acquired by nokia
last year. this new OS makes the Asha FASTER, responsive, and intuitive.

The Asha 501 with its new OS comes with a new feature called FASTLANE, which is a homescreen that tracks your past, present and future and brings everything u need no more than a swipe away.
The Asha 501 comes with a forray of EA games, as it takes advantage of Nokia and EA partnership, games like Real football, Big Little City and more, including the usual suspects Facebook, twitter, Whatsapp.

Nokia leaves little to the Imagination as Lumia 928 launch draws near

Nothing has been left to the imagination regarding the Nokia Lumia 928 destined for Verizon.

The Nokia Lumia 928 for Verizon should be released by now.
We have seen the device in both (leaked by @evleaks),

billboards have been put up advertising the device,

Its already in the wild, as it was spotted by mark from theNokiaBlog at a Nokia organized event in New York...

It's already in Verizon's digital print

and it's even got a teaser page on Nokia's US webpage where they show a video comparing its low light video recording capabilities against the Galaxy SIII and iPhone.

Is Verizon Lumia 822 outselling At&t's Lumia 920? What this means for Verizon's upcoming Lumia 928

Nokia is to Windows Phone what Samsung is to Android.

It's not news that Nokia is the leading manufacturer of Windows Phones today and recent stats from AdDuplex only confirms this.

AdDuplex gets its data from its Ad network from over 500 apps installed on windows phones and it shows that currently Nokia holds a dominating 80% share of all Windows Phone powered devices, with HTC coming a FAR second with 18% (thanks to its Nokia like HTC 8X and 8S).

Nokia's numbers are expected to increase dramatically over the next quarter, mainly because of the Lumia 520, a very affordable Lumia device with enough features to consider this a steal. It's gaining a lot of momentum and has already passed the Lumia 720, 900 even though it was only released less than a month now.

This Nokia dominance reminds me of back in the early days, when Symbian when the smartphone OS of the future (oh the irony), back then Nokia had the monster share and went on to be the only OEM ripping the success of Symbian until 2007!

If AdDuplex took this survey back in the day, that chart would look like this...

If history is foretold, then Nokia will end up being the #1 and only WP manufacturer like they once did with Symbian

It's also interesting to note that in the US, Verizon holds second spot behind At&t for number of WP devices, with the Lumia 822 accounting for 22% of the WP devices, interestingly doing better than the exclusive Lumia 920 (20%) which is a much better phone than the 822, it will be interesting to see how well the Lumia 928 (which is a Lumia 920 variant) for Verizon will do when it hits Verizon stores.

So how come the Lumia 822 is outselling the Lumia 920?

For starters, I saw more At&t Lumia 920 commercials than I did for the 822, are there just more Verizon users who want the Lumia, maybe Verizon it's because Verizon has a larger user subscriber base than At&t. Or does it have anything to do with the price of the 822?

Either way it is very welcome development that a Verizon will be getting a Lumia 920 equivalent, I know a couple of friends who were sad back in November when the news came that Verizon wasn't getting the Lumia 920, yet.

upcoming WhatsApp update for Lumia to completely overhaul the app and bring improvements and new "call contact" feature

If you use a Lumia and you so happen to use Whatsapp too,
So what do you think about the app? happy? nope, disgruntled is more like it, the app has so many problems like high battery drainage, high CPU utilization, bugs and missing features that if you are a hard-core Whatsapp user like me, then chances are you are thinking about changing mobile platforms.

Nokia to the rescue, why? well, Nokia is working hard with Whatsapp Inc. on making your Whatsapp experience worthwhile.

One of the major concerns about the current Whatsapp is that it runs on a background agent based on the music API, this keeps a constant connection to the Whatsapp service, I believe this is the root of all the problems Whatsapp users are facing. this will be changed with the upcoming updates.

Also new smileys will be introduced and now you can see on from the large tile.

The push/toast notifications issues will also be addressed.

In-line images will be bigger now.

This update will bring Fast Resume feature, where by you can resume from where you left off (if you have the app open), just like with the Facebook app, currently even if you have the Whatsapp app open in the background and u click on the tile, it opens a new instant of the app.

The "call contact" feature will be introduced too (this has been available on android and iOS versions)

The app is currently in beta and is being tested internally.

the only bummer is that we don't have an official date to when this will released but hopefully it will be this month at least.

Other features I will like to see are...

- the ability to swipe between chat conversations instead of having to go back to the app's main screen to switch between chats.

- change the background image of each chat conversation (like on iOS and android)

- ability to send and receive and save videos

Let's wait shall we?

Dear Fandroids/iSheep, can't we all just get along... Funny Windows Phone Ad

I never thought I would see the day a funny witty Windows Phone ad would come. Today is that day, Microsoft/WP has finally done something right in regards to marketing their Windows Phone devices.

I believe a successful TV commercials is one that leaves an aftertaste in your mouth every time you watch it.
And this commercial does exactly that...

It's really funny... and even though die hard Fandroids or iSheep will fume when they see this, it will get them thinking, it will get those sitting on the fence thinking too.

The icing on the cake is that while this is an ad for windows phone, they used the awesome Lumia 920, showcasing the red and stunning yellow versions of the device. brilliant!

If consumers never knew windows phone existed, well they will now.

Awesome job Microsoft, or whatever Ad agency came up with this bit.

It's going DOWN! May 14th in London, Nokia to announce the next BIG thing for Windows Phone!

May is looking to be a very very interesting month for Nokia fans, we have got the Lumia 928 for Verizon coming in May, revamped WhatsApp is coming too (maybe sooner, I hope), Jolla is going to show off their first meego phone and now it looks like Nokia is set to announce "what's next" after its Lumia 920.

Nokia sent out invites to the press about an event on May 14th in London, UK. It looks like Nokia is set to announce the next big thing regarding its Lumia line.

"The Nokia Lumia Story continues" is the caption of the invite, we are definitely going to see what's next in line after the success of the Lumia 920, it can only get better.

Nokia will announce a new Lumia phone, probably the much talked about "catwalk" with thin aluminium unibody? EOS? all some latest advancement in Pureview technology?

Whatever the case maybe, this device will take over where the Lumia 920 stops!

PS: I really hope the time between announcement of this device and its actual launch will not exceed 1 month.

Nokia Chat (Beta) comes to Lumia Phones

Nokia's chat service, that's available on other Nokia platforms has now been released on Lumia phones in beta.
It allows you to stay in touch with your yahoo contacts and other Nokia Chat users. It's kinda like Nokia's version of blackberry's messenger (BBM) service.

Here are the features of Nokia Chat:

Person to Person Messaging: Reach millions of Nokia Chat and Yahoo! Messenger users across different mobile and computer platforms.

Push Notifications and Live Tile Updates: Receive new message notifications, preview new messages, and see how many notifications you’ve received – even when Nokia Chat isn’t running.

Share a Place: Send information about a restaurant, store, or other point of interest. If the recipient is also using a Lumia, they’ll see details, directions, and reviews inside the HERE Maps app.

Broadcast Your Location: Optionally include your city or neighborhood in your status message, so your friends and family know when you’re near or faraway.

Find Contacts: Scan your phone’s address book to find friends and family who already use Nokia Chat and Yahoo! Messenger.

And if you’re using a Nokia Lumia with Windows Phone 8, you can take advantage of these additional features:

Speak Your Message: Compose a message by pressing speak, and what you say will be translated into text.

Facebook Phone? Old News! Check out Nokia's WhatsApp Phone

Look at your Lumia phone (if you have one) now imagine if it had a physical QWERTY keyboard and was running the Nokia S40 O/S... the answer is the Asha 210!

Nokia announced the Asha 210, a QWERTY S40 device with a dedicated whatsapp button. but it is more than just the button, Nokia recently entered a partnership with whatsapp, so if you purchase this device, you get whatsapp for free on this device, no yearly $1 fee! Yuo, that says me $1 a year (-_-)

Just like the Asha 205 that's a QWERTY Dual-SIM phone with a dedicated facebook button.
I guess we are in line to receive an Asha QWERTY phone with a dedicated Instagram button.

The Asha 210 does have NFC technology in them, something Nokia is choosing to call SLAM (just like Samsung calls theirs BEAM), Here check it out

Retraction: Nokia did NOT sue HTCopy

So remember the story about Nokia stop sales of HTC One phones in the Netherlands because they had a microphone component in them that was meant solely for Nokia phones?... Well, that story is sorta not true!

HTC released the statement:

In light of several misleading stories regarding a recent injunction obtained by Nokia against STM (a supplier of components to HTC in The Netherlands) HTC looks to clarify the following points:

Nokia has NOT obtained an injunction in The Netherlands, or anywhere else, against the HTC One.

The Dutch proceedings were brought by Nokia solely against STM. HTC was not sued by Nokia in the Netherlands.

The Dutch injunction prohibits STM from selling certain microphones to any company other than Nokia for a limited period.

The judgment against STM states that HTC can continue to use microphones already purchased from STM in its products, because they were purchased in good-faith. Nokia's attempt to obtain a recall of microphones already sold to HTC failed.

HTC will transition to improved microphone designs once its inventory of STM microphones is exhausted.

So here's what really happened, just in case the above statement doesn't make sense.

Nokia struck a deal with microchip company STM to have this dual-membrane microphone supplied solely to Nokia for a limited period.

STM went around and supplied it to HTC for the HTC One phone (without HTC knowing about the agreement Nokia had with STM)

Nokia sues STM and tries to have HTC One phones that have the microphone component in them pulled from the market.

While I don't know the status of Nokia's injunction against STM, HTC is free to sell its HTC One phone that already have the component until their stock is exhausted,

No Love lost from Nokia, as Symbian devices receive update

If you are reading this, then you are probably asking yourself the same question I did "Symbian still lives?"

Because as it turns out it seems the once formidable platform isn't dead, it's on life support.

Symbian users (how many of them left?) will be glad to see that their phones have gotten a new update that adds a bunch of neat widgets (widgets? can't remember when last I said that word, so used to "tiles" now)

the widgets included are

Webview widget (as featured most recently here, during its Beta Labs outing), showing a window onto any live web site of your choice. And yes, you can have multiple Webview widgets on multiple pages, if needed - they refresh whenever that homescreen is viewed. The version here is just one minor build on from the last beta version, by the way (21.00 build 35)
Mirror widget, designed for people to check their faces (etc.), effectively a shortcut to an embedded 'front camera' utility, with QVGA 'capture' (yes, yes, low. The hardware supports VGA on most devices, but for some reason software for the front camera only has access to the lower resolution). Note that this doesn't work on the Nokia 700, as it doesn't have a front facing camera...
Toggle Flashlight - as it sounds, turns the LED flash light on as a torch - presumably for those who haven't discovered the keylock toggle long press shortcut for this - or who want to get the torch on NOW and not in five seconds time 8-)
Stopwatch - as it sounds, a quick and useful 'instant stopwatch', with just pause and stop controls
Contacts Communication - a one-touch way to phone or message a favourite contact - tapping on the body of the thumbnail brings up the contact record in the usual way

I guess we have Accenture (the software behind Symbian development) to thank for this. Though I am still waiting on them to do something revolutionary with the OS

Nokia to HTC: "Don't use our stuff or you'll be sorry"

These smartphone wars are getting uglier everyday.

I remember the fuss Nokia fans made when HTC released their Lumia-like line of WP8 phones, yea we all remember how the HTC 8X/8S looked eerily similar to Nokia's Lumia line, borrowing the unibody design concept and flashy colors. Many were even more upset when Nokia wasn't planning on doing anything about it, instead S.Elop embraced HTC's idea.

Well, not so fast, fast forward to present day now... Nokia has just halted all sales of the HTC One (a device I actually admired) in the Netherlands (Holland), no they didn't steal any of Nokia's physical appearance or design, this time it's worse, they took Nokia's technology.

The microphone used in the HTC One is one that was invented by Nokia and made for use exclusively on Nokia devices, They didn't even ask for permission.

In a statement released by Nokia... "HTC has no license or authorization from Nokia to use these microphones or the Nokia technologies from which they have been developed,"

In retaliation, Nokia filed an injunction in Amsterdam's District court to cease sales of the device, and yea, they won.

So far this injunction is only effective in Holland, it would be a HUGE blow to HTC if Nokia had won this in the US, though that would be unlikely as HTC is already scrambling for alternative microphones to assemble in its HTC One. I mean they should have just reached an agreement with Nokia to use their microphones.

I would like to conclude by pointing out that the slogan for the HTC One is "Everything your phone isn't"... There are soo many things wrong with that statement, but I will leave that up to you to figure it out!

Why are Americans selling their Lumia 920s on eBay, Craigslist and Amazon?

When the Nokia Lumia 920 launched on At&t last November no doubt a lot of Nokia fans and new comers jumped on it, while non-At&t users moaned about how it was coming to their platform (eg. t-Mobile, Verizon)

But now, less than 6 months since its release, there has been buyer's remorse and customer's who bought the Lumia 920 are selling them off on eBay, Amazon and even Craigslist.

I don't know if Nokia US is taking the time to find out what changed the minds of these users that they are selling or trading their devices for either Android or iPhone.

I decided to do a little research myself, i went on Craigslist and eBay, asking Lumia 920 sellers why they were selling the most innovative smartphone so quick after they just got it and here are the top responses...

1. It CANNOT be unlocked
2. It's too heavy
5. Lack of Apps (no pulse, iHeart, instagram)
6. Don't like the UI (no customization/widgets/ringtones/notifications)
7. freezes a lot
8. Phone is always hot, poor Battery life
9. tried it out, just didn't like it

The top answer i usually get from Craigslist sellers was the fact that one app or the other they were really into was missing from the platform, I saw sellers getting rid of their Lumia 920 just because Pulse (the fun news reader app wasn't available on the platform, he said he couldn't do without pulse and went back to iOS. Or another user who said it didn't have iHeart radio, because he needed it on his transit to work. This just shows how important apps are to an ecosystem.

The second top response i got (mainly from eBay) was because they just realized the phone couldn't be unlocked, though there is nothing we can do about that, as it is an exclusivity deal between At&t and Nokia.

a few sellers, said they didn't want to go through the hassle of learning a totally new UI.

I want to believe Nokia's working hard at figuring out ways to have customers not just buy but KEEP their Lumia 920s

PS: This editorial isn't implying that Android phones like the Galaxy S3, or the iPhone aren't sold after purchase yea sure, phone will always be sold after use, Lumia isn't an exception, this article talks about WHY users are selling their Lumia 920 after a short period (less than 6 months) and nothing to the contrary.

Nokia to unveil a QWERTY Lumia phone? Asha?

Nokia teased this photo of what appears to be a QWERTY phone and asked that you stay tuned on April 24th @ 7am GMT to see it revealed.

The last high end QWERTY keyboard to come out of Finland was the Symbian-running E6, there are also a bunch of QWERTY Asha devices (either the regular one SIM models or the Dual SIM ones); So what's the big fuss about this one, it could be a WP8 QWERTY phone? Though I highly doubt it, it would be amazing if it turned out to be true!

Having a QWERTY form factor WP8 phone will surely bolster Nokia's chances at regaining its dominance.

Another press shot of Verizon's answer to At&t's Lumia 920 has surfaced, coourtesy of @evleaks, how trusted source for unreleased, unannounced smart devices.

This time we get to see just how thick this device is and judging from the photo, it look just as thick as the 920, though the notable difference is the curved edges which makes it look thinner.

Verizon is expected to announce the Lumia 928 next week.
So get ready Verizon fans!!

Images of what appear to be the rumored Nokia Lumia 1000 (aka CatWalk) have surfaced and does the device look good? I dunno, you be the judge.

The Nokia CatWalk is rumored to have an aluminium uni-body, 4.5” display with an OCTA display, S4 1.5GHz dual-core CPU, 16GB of storage (down from 32GB), 2000mAh battery and an 8.7MP/41MP OIS camera with LED flash.

This device looks like its aluminium but it definitely isn't uni-body as you can see from the image, it seems to have a removable battery cover.
This device has just LED flash, unlike the Lumia 928 coming to Verizon that has both Xenon and LED, what do you make of that? Maybe it's camera isn't that impressive to arm it with both xenon and LED flash (like the Nokia808)
Also the camera doesn't have the traditional metal strip Carl Zeiss branding (like on the N9, Lumia 800, 900, 920..) instead it has got a cylindrical bulge, similar to that on the Huawei W1. So maybe it might not even be a high end WP8.1 lumia, it could be another variation of the Lumia 920, somewhere between the 920 and the 720?

Also the charging port is now at the of this mysterious Nokia device, I assume Microsoft was making it a standard for all Windows Phones to have their charging ports at the bottom.

Now if you look at the leaked image showing the back of the Nokia, at the botton right above the speakers, there are 3 circular metal connectors, kinda like those used for charging of some sort, I think those connectors are for attaching like an external battery pack...

I am going to conclude that this is a prototype of some sort, and when the flagship WP8.1 (it is rumored to have a dual core CPU) Nokia Lumia comes out, this will not be a far cry from it design wise.

PS: loving how the display is wide and curved, hope Nokia utilizes every inch of it unlike the enormous space they wasted on the 920

Nokia TGIF: The Juggernaut Nokia Lumia 920 vs. the HTC One (not two)

I currently use the Nokia Lumia 920, the most innovative Windows 8 Phone (I prefer saying W8P rather than WP8) and I have never used an Android phone, I don have animosity towards Android phones and it's O/S, truthfully, I can't judge it because I never used one, I can say saying as much based on what I have read or watched on YouTube!
But if I was to switch to an Android phone today, it would have to be the HTC One, I love the unibody aluminium body, which is reminiscent of my old flame, the N8. I also find the UI interesting (maybe that's cos it reminds me of Windows Phone tiles UI).
Specs wise, the HTC One looks the better of the 2 (depending on what you looking for regarding specs), the HTC One has a 4.7 display, 1.7GHz, 2GB RAM, Beats Audio, 143g weight, comes in 32/64GB versions, 4MP/2.1MP camera (with some kind of tech inside), while the Lumia 920 has a 4.5 display screen, 1GB RAM, Dolby Sound, 185g weight, 32GB, 8MP/1.3MP camera. Yea, the HTC One does have better specs

So I surfed the web looking to see if I could find a comparison video between these 2 phones and sure enough there are a handful... But I picked this one from PocketNow, seems to be the most comprehensive one.
Check it out...

I will give it to the HTC One based on Specs, but the Lumia 920 wins based on innovation and better quality build (rigid, sturdy and durable body and it comes in variety of colors too)

After the 1308 firmware update for Nokia Lumia 920 last couple of weeks, At&t users such as myself started having issues with connectivity, well as usual, Nokia was quick to response and has now released a new update to fix this issue, though we didn't get a $100 credit like we did when something similar happened last year with the Lumia 900! that would have been surprisingly ridiculously awesome.

The Best customer service in the world, Kudos to Nokia for their quick response as usual!

Video Demo: N9 double tap to unlock feature coming to Lumia phones

I just read pretty exciting news that the Double-Tap to unlock feature that was unique to the Nokia N9 will be making its way to Lumia phones, that is just awesome. This is one of the cool N9 features I miss,
No more having to use the physical button.
The guys at WPCentral go a short demo of it, it is said to roll out in the coming months (dunno how long that is)...

I wonder what other symbian/meego features Nokia is working on importing to its Lumia line.. full swipe? unlimited multi-tasking? let me not get my hopes up too much
