Once in a while a phone is made that stands out from the crowd, that is outstanding in its appearance and design. The Nokia 8800 is one such phone. It's not cheap; in fact it's extremely expensive, but that's the point. As the successor to the Nokia 8910i, exclusivity is what the Nokia 8800 is all about.
Physically the Nokia 8800 is unique. The body features a laser-cut stainless steel cover that slides down to reveal the keypad within. The stainless steel covers are highly durable and provide excellent protection for the phone. The screen is made from reinforced scratch-resistant glass, so the Nokia 8800 is engineered to last, which is just as well considering the price! As well as being durable it is superbly crafted and beautiful of course. The phone is quite heavy, due to the metal case, but feels good to hold. The keypad is partially obscured by the casing and isn't as easy to use as more conventional designs, especially the bottom row of keys.
Inside there is further attention to detail, with an exclusive user interface with its own styles and themes. The Nokia 8800 comes with a set of ringtones composed especially for the Nokia 8800 by Ryuichi Sakamoto.
Moving on to the functionality of the device, the Nokia 8800 isn't exactly at the cutting edge, but isn't too far away. The phone features an integrated 0.5 megapixel camera with a good quality video recorder. The TFT display really is impressive, being very sharp and bright. It's rated at 262,000 colours and has a higher resolution than the Samsung D500, making it one of the best in its class. The Nokia 8800 comes with an integrated music player that can play MP3 and AAC formats with stereo output. A standard Nokia stereo headset is provided with the sales package, but the Nokia 8800 is also compatible with Nokia Bluetooth wireless headsets.
Other features include a set of 3D games designed to make use of the Nokia 8800's 3D graphics accelerator, fast data transfer via EDGE, and an XHTML web browser that lets you view web pages as they appear on a computer, albeit on a tiny screen. The Nokia 8800 has an internal memory of 64 Mbytes, but an external memory card would have been nice in a phone with as many media features as this one. Battery life is acceptable but not brilliant.
Overall, the Nokia 8800 is all about creating a big impression. It's a beautiful phone that has style by the bucket load. It's well-featured, but loses out to competitors like the Sony Ericsson K750i in this respect. If you crave features look elsewhere, but if you crave style, the Nokia 8800 is for you!

Nokia 7260 Review

The Art Deco inspired design of the Nokia 7260 comes with a coordinated carrying pouch and strap, revealing Nokia's intention to make this phone a fashion item. It is a beautiful phone to look at, with its curved edges, high gloss finish and contrasting silvery highlights, and practical too, although the keypad suffers a little in usability.
The 65k colour display is bright and clear, although small, but good enough. The camera is VGA standard (640 x 480 pixels), and again is average. The integrated video recorder and FM radio are welcome additions, but all things considered there is nothing special in the functionality of this phone. It does enough, and looks stylish at the same time!
Overall, a good mid-range phone, packaged in an unusual and distinctive design, that is slim, lightweight and practical. This phone will appeal to those wanting something a little different and exclusive - not because of particularly high cost, but because it is different.

The Nokia 7250i is an upgraded version of the Nokia 7250. It offers XHTML support for a better mobile browsing experience, plus improved camera functions, enhanced MMS, and comes in a new range of colours. The built-in camera offers functions like zoom, contrast adjustment, slideshow, and a night mode for low-light conditions. The image editor enables you to add text, frames, and clip art images. Enhanced MMS offers delivery reports for sent messages, advanced group messaging features, and image scaling to reduce message size. "Portrait image caller ID" means you have the option of seeing a pre-set picture of the person who's calling you.
Like the Nokia 7250, the Nokia 7250i incorporates an integrated digital camera and offers most feature that people will want: colour display, polyphonic ringtones, a stereo FM radio and triple band, as well as Java capability. However, there is no getting away from the fact that the Nokia 7250i has a poor colour display, a poor quality camera and various reliability problems. A much better option is the newer Nokia 6230.

The Nokia 7200 is Nokia's first clamshell phone, and is visually stunning. Its textile covers are certainly different, and quite tactile, although durability remains to be proven. Downsides are the large size and weight, combined with the small screen size.
It's not a very highly featured phone, and is now looking quite dated in terms of its specification.

Nokia 6822 Review

The Nokia 6822 is based on the previous Nokia 6820 model, and incorporates the same fold-out keyboard design. The display rotates 90° when the keyboard is fully opened. Like the Nokia 6820, the Nokia 6822 includes a range of functions including a camera with video recorder, Bluetooth wireless connectivity and high speed data transfer by EDGE. It's amazing how Nokia have managed to pack so much technology into a compact and lightweight phone!
At the same time, however, the Nokia 6822 retains many of the problems of the older model. The keyboard is not as easy to use as it looks, and is partly novelty rather than a full replacement for a real keyboard. The display, whilst upgraded to 65k colours is still very small and lags behind the competition considerably. The camera, again upgraded, is still poor compared with other phones at this price. And perhaps the worst feature of the Nokia 6822 is the shockingly small amount of memory, which really limits the capabilities of the phone.

Nokia 6820 Review

The Nokia 6820 is the size of an ordinary phone. But it's bigger on the inside, with a full messaging keyboard. Like the Nokia 6800 and Nokia 6810, it's described by Nokia as a "Messaging Device" rather than a mobile phone, and is a device designed for those who need flexible communications whilst on the move.
Out of the trio of messaging devices (Nokia 6800, Nokia 6810 and Nokia 6820), the Nokia 6820 has the most features, adding an integrated digital camera and video recorder to its specification. The Nokia 6820 is also the most compact of the three, and weighs in at just 100g.
We like the Bluetooth connectivity and EDGE connection for high speed data, and the QWERTY keyboard is a fantastic innovation, but at the same time we are disappointed by the poor colour display and low resolution camera, and the keyboard is not as easy to use as it could have been. A good try from Nokia, and we look forward to a replacement design that fixes these shortcomings - that would be a truly outstanding mobile device. The Nokia 6822 goes some way towards this goal.

The Nokia 6681 smart phone is very similar to the successful and highly-rated Nokia 6680, except that the Nokia 6681 does not have the 3G functionality of the Nokia 6680. The phones are the same in most other respects.
The exterior design of the Nokia 6681 is nearly identical to the Nokia 6680, and the phones are the same size and very nearly the same weight. It's not a lightweight phone, but is typical for a smartphone. The keypad layout is very convenient and features a five-way scroll key, two soft keys, application key, edit and clear keys, send and end keys.
The Nokia 6681 incorporates a high quality 1.3 megapixel camera (1.23 effective megapixels) with a convenient protective slide. The camera has a flash with a range of 1.5m and a 6x digital zoom. There is also a video recording facility. Images can be printed directly from the phone to a compatible printer or kiosk using Bluetooth or USB cable, or transferred to a PC for processing. Video can be played back in full screen mode and the video player supports both MPEG4 and 3GP formats.
The music player supports MP3, AAC & RealAudio format tracks and provides stero output with a pair of Nokia HDS-3 stereo headphones provided as standard.
The Nokia 6681 is a series 60 smartphone and comes with a selection of Symbian applications. Applications provided on the memory card include Kodak Mobile (for printing images taken using the camera), Nokia Wireless Keyboard application, a selection of games and a Photo Editor. Messaging is of course fully supported, with SMS, MMS and e-mail with file handling for attachments in jpeg, 3gp, MP3, .ppt, .doc, excel, and .pdf format.
The internal memory of the device is 8 Mbytes (slightly less than the 6680), with the addition of a 64 Mbyte MMC card which can be hot-swapped. Connectivity is via Bluetooth or USB.

The Nokia 6680 is an upgrade of the Nokia 6630, which was Nokia's first 3G smartphone. It's a big improvement. Firstly, the physical design of the phone has been improved. It's less distinctive than the Nokia 6630, being squarer in shape, but the keypad is easier to use and the whole thing is slightly smaller (albeit a few grams heavier.)
Secondly, the imaging capabilities of the phone have been improved in a big way. The display is the same size as the Nokia 6630, but has been uprated to 262k colours. It's the best screen on any Nokia phone to date. The camera is still rated at 1.3 megapixels, but we can hardly complain about that! It's a high quality camera with a massive 6x digital zoom and a handy built in flash. It can't match Sony Ericsson's K750i, but remember that this is a phone first and a multimedia device second. A second inward-facing camera is used for video calling, which was a function missing from the Nokia 6630. A slide protects the camera from scratches and dust.
The Nokia 6680 has an integrated RealPlayer music & media player. RealPlayer supports a range of formats including MP3 and AAC audio and MPEG4 video. Audio output is in stereo and a pair of Nokia HDS-3 stereo headphones are provided as standard.
The Nokia 6680 is a series 60 smartphone and comes with a selection of Symbian applications. Applications provided on the memory card include Adobe Reader, Kodak Mobile (for printing images taken using the camera), Nokia Wireless Keyboard application, a selection of games and a Photo Editor.
As well as being a smartphone, the Nokia 6680 is 3G compatible, making it an ideal phone for applications requiring high-speed data transfer. As well as the obvious video calling function, the phone is ideal for video downloads, web browsing and email handling. Support is provided for viewing various kinds of document attachments (view jpeg, 3gp, MP3, .ppt, .doc, excel, and .pdf files). The web browser is an advanced XHTML browser that can handle websites with frames, background images, image maps and simple JavaScript.
The internal memory of the device is 10 Mbytes, with the addition of a 64 Mbyte MMC card which can be hot-swapped. Connectivity is via Bluetooth or USB.
The Nokia 6680 also seems to have cured most of the reliability problems that dogged the Nokia 6630, and we thoroughly recommend it for anyone looking for a cutting-edge multimedia phone with the advantages of both the Symbian operating system and 3G. It's simply Nokia's best phone so far.

The Nokia 6670 is a series 60 smartphone that offers a broad range of functionality within a stable, well-designed platform and is highly recommended for business use.
The 65k screen is the same size as other Nokia smartphones (176 x 208 pixels) and is adequate but not as good as rival smartphones from Motorola or Sony Ericsson. The form factor is convenient, with a conventional keypad that's more useable that the similar-spec Nokia 7610. This suggests that the Nokia 6670 is more targeted at the business user than the fashion user (or else that Nokia has learned finally that novelty keypads don't make for great phones!)
On the multimedia side, the Nokia 6670 comes with an excellent 1 megapixel camera with a digital zoom and a choice of normal and night modes. There is a also a video camera which takes reasonable quality video, with a maximum duration of ten minutes. Full-screen video playback is possible using the built-in RealPlayer software. The Nokia 6670 also supports video download and playback and can function as an MP3/AAC player, although only a mono headset is supplied.
The Nokia 6670 supports all the normal voice and messaging features that you would expect. These include voice dialing, speed dialing, voice commands, voice recorder and an integrated handsfree speaker. There is full support for MMS and email (SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4), with a document viewer capable of viewing Word, Excel and PowerPoint files. An integrated internet browser supports HTML, XHTML and WML. The memory card comes with a Netfront Web browser with suport for PDF files.
The internal memory of the Nokia 6670 is 8 Mbytes, and a 64 Mbyte memory card is supplied as standard. The size and weight of the Nokia 6670 are very good for a smartphone. Battery life is average to good.
The one area where the Nokia 6670 is weak compared with rival smartphones is in connectivity. Granted it comes with full support for Bluetooth and USB cable, but is missing an IR port. The internet connection is a GPRS connection, but there is no high speed data. This makes email and web browsing very slow.
Overall the Nokia 6670 is a great smartphone for business users. It lacks some of the functionality of the Nokia 7610, but has a better keypad. Equally it is missing some of the high-end features of the Nokia 6630, but seems to be a more reliable phone. The phone that trumps all of these is the new Nokia 6680, which has all of the funtionality without the reliability problems of the Nokia 6630. The Nokia 6681 is also an excellent phone if you don't want the 3G capabilities of the Nokia 6630 or Nokia 6680.

The Nokia 6650 was Nokia's first 3G mobile phone, released in the UK during 2003.
The Nokia 6650 includes an integrated video camera capable of recording and playing video at up to 15 frames per second. The Nokia 6650's digital camera has a 640 x 480 resolution, with 24-bit colour (16.7 million colors). The Nokia 6650's memory is 7 Mbytes, which is plenty for storing images, but not a lot for videos.
The Nokia 6650 has a Symbian operating system with a graphical user interface. It also has MMS, Java™, polyphonic ringtones and Bluetooth connectivity. Its main problems are the poor quality small display (the poorest display on any smartphone we've seen), low memory (not expandable), and its sheer bulkiness.

The Nokia 6630 is Nokia's first 3G smartphone. It's Nokia's most powerful smartphone yet, built on the Series 60 Symbian operating system with a wealth of pre-installed and downloadable applications. The Nokia 6630 is Nokia's flagship phone and it takes smartphones to the next level. Physically it's reminiscent of the Nokia 3660, although its more compact and has a better keypad. In terms of functionality, it offers everything that the Nokia 7610 can do, with the addition of 3G, an improved camera, faster processor and more memory. For the power user it's a winner!
Business applications include full always-on email support, with support for Virtual Private Networks (VPN) and a built-in application for reading attachments such as Microsoft Word and Excel documents. With full broadband internet via 3G or EDGE, you can send and receive multimedia documents very quickly indeed.
Multimedia applications include a high-resolution digital camera (1.3 megapixels) with up to one hour of video capture. You can also download video or audio (MP3/AAC) for playback on the high quality 65k colour display and stereo headset. The 3G connection is fast enough to enjoy real time video streaming. The supplied software includes Nokia Video Editor and Movie Director so you can edit the videos that you record. The web browser provides advanced HTML support, including background images, frames and some JavaScript so browsing the web is a much richer experience than on most phones. The large screen is ideal for viewing all these applications. It's not the best screen in its class, but it's as as good as anything Nokia have previously produced and it's good enough. It's worth noting too that the headset provides for listening to MP3 in stereo, unlike some of the other Series 60 phones.
One feature that's notable by its absence is video calling. The 3G functions seem to be aimed primarily at providing fast communication, and the video calling function has been left out.
There's a full range of connectivity options, including wireless Bluetooth support, both for headsets / car kits and for all kinds of data transfer. You can synchronise your contacts remotely using Bluetooth or via a cable.
The internal memory of 10 Mbytes is not going to be enough for all of the functions available on this phone, but a 64 Mbyte memory card is supplied and this can be hot-swapped to store or transfer data. For users who download a lot of applications, the lack of internal memory may be a problem, but then again only the Sony Ericsson P910i offers significantly greater internal memory. We would expect this to be remedied in the next generation of 3G smartphones.
Battery life is excellent for a phone of this kind. Depending on usage, it should be possible to get a couple of days use from this phone between charges.
At the time of writing, the Nokia 6630 has no direct rivals, but we expect that to change during 2005 with the launch of more 3G smartphones.
An outstanding phone, but a word of caution: some users are reporting reliability problems with this phone. The Nokia 6630 has now been superseded by the Nokia 6680.

It should have been a great phone - Nokia took a very popular mid-range phone (the Nokia 6610) and updated it with an integrated digital camera, voice commands and XHTML browser, whilst retaining everything that was good about the Nokia 6610:

What went wrong? The problems started with the poor quality colour display - perfectly adequate for a non-camera phone a couple of years ago, but hopelessly inadequate for a camera phone. Add to this the intermittent software and hardware faults that were present in the Nokia 6610 - faults that Nokia failed to fix in the Nokia 6610i - and increase the complexity of the device, thereby introducing more glitches, and you have a recipe for disaster. Build quality also seems to have gone down the pan with the Nokia 6610i.

The Nokia 6310i adds Triband capability to the Nokia 6310, enabling it to operate worldwide. This feature, combined with the new Java applications, famous user-friendliness and features like High Speed Data, voice dialling and voice recorder make the Nokia 6310i an excellent business phone.
The Java capability means that you can download applications just as easily as downloading ringtones or graphics. As well as Java games, you can also download applications like personal assistants, travel and information tools.
We would like to have awarded the Nokia 6310i a higher rating, but there are persistent reports of reliability and reception problems with this phone. The Bluetooth support is also limited, its a heavy phone to carry and some of its features are rather dated.
For those looking for a Nokia 6310i replacement, we recommend the Nokia 6021 which has all the features of the Nokia 6310i (and more) in an updated design.

The Nokia 6260 is a business-orientated smartphone with a range of interesting features.
One of the characteristics of the Nokia 6260's clamshell design is the rotating screen which can be rotated to a number of positions - open, closed, facing inwards and facing outwards. The display face can be closed with the screen facing outwards for browsing the internet or using applications.
The screen is very high quality - one of the best from Nokia - using active TFT technology for a sharp bright image, with 65k colours and a high resolution. A good quality screen like this is essential for making good use of the various business applications that come with the phone.
The Nokia 6260 is a series 60 phone with a Symbian operating system. Foremost amongst the pre-installed business applications is a mobile email client that uses Quickword and Quickpoint viewers for viewing attachments (Word and PowerPoint documents). Additional Java and Symbian applications can be stored, and a pre-loaded memory card is supplied with a number of "try-and-buy" applications.
The internal memory is not huge at 6 Mbytes, but the memory can be expanded with 32 Mbyte memory cards. The Nokia 6260 has an excellent range of connectivity options: Bluetooth™, infrared, Pop-Port™ connector and USB.
The Nokia 6260 includes a good quality digital camera that can shoot pictures at VGA resolution (300,000 pixels) and also record video. The camera is side-mounted with a movable display that allows for self-portraits. There's also a built-in FM radio and MP3 player, although the MP3 player is mono and not the best quality.
Nokia have succeeded in packing a lot into the Nokia 6260, with the clamshell design enabling them to have a large screen but still keep the phone size small. The phone is quite heavy, but no more than the average 3G phone, and this will probably be acceptable when the full range of features is considered. The screen is excellent, the spec of the phone includes everything that most users will need, and the range of Java and Symbian applications available for the phone is impressive. With the Nokia 6260 it seems that it is finally possible to have a business-orientated phone that retains the stylishness and fun features of a mainstream phone.
The Nokia 6260 will inevitably be compared with the Sony Ericsson P910i. It has to be said that the Sony Ericsson P910i beats the Nokia is most respects, however the Sony Ericsson P910i does cost and weigh considerably more than the Nokia 6260, so there should be room in the marketplace for both.
On the negative side, the Nokia 6260 does appear to have software and reliability problems. You should read the user reviews below to find out about people's experiences with this phone, but the main issues seem to be faulty phones, phones breaking and software glitches. It seems that Nokia smartphones often come with reliability problems, especially any like the Nokia 6260 that feature novel designs or features.

Similar in many ways to the Nokia 6220, the Nokia 6230 is a business class phone that also includes features like an integrated digital camera, video recorder and a music player.
Slightly larger and a touch heavier than the Nokia 6220, the Nokia 6230 brings a number of enhancements, not least being the active TFT colour display with 65,536 colours, compared with the measly 4096 colours of the 6220. However, the screen resolution is still relatively poor at 128 x 128 pixels.
The quality of the camera has also been enhanced, with full VGA resolution up to 640 x 480 pixels. The camera is easy to use with the phone display used as a viewfinder, and includes useful features such as a self timer function, a choice of standard, portrait, and night modes and a choice of 3 image quality options: high, normal and basic. The video recorder has also been improved by extending the maximum duration of clips that can be recorded and played.
Another welcome addition is the Bluetooth connectivity, which replaces the infrared connection of the Nokia 6220, and the faster EDGE connection.
Overall the Nokia 6230 represents a significant improvement to the Nokia 6220 and is highly recommended, although it does suffer from a poor quality screen compared with other camera phones in this class. The new Nokia 6230i significantly updates the features of the Nokia 6230.

Nokia 6220 Review

The Nokia 6220 is a business class phone that also includes features like an integrated digital camera, video recorder and FM radio.
A novel feature of the Nokia 6220 is the EDGE connectivity, which along with GPRS provides a very high-speed internet connection. In addition, the Nokia 6220's XHTML browser provides a rich full colour interface to the web.
Nokia have resisted the temptation to make the appearance of the Nokia 6220 "cool" and have sensibly provided a conventionally-styled keypad, making the phone usable as well as smart.
The main problems with the Nokia 6220 are the poor quality screen (just 4096 colours and 128 x 128 pixels) and poor camera (CIF resolution - that's just 352 x 288 pixels). These really let the phone down, and a much better choice is the Nokia 6230.

Nokia 6170 Review

The Nokia 6170 is another clamshell phone from Nokia. The first thing you notice about the Nokia 6170 is its sleek stainless steel surfaces and chunky retro styling. It's very masculine and very sexy. The phone features a small external colour display and a larger internal display with 65k colours. The external display shows information on incoming calls, date and time, and phone status, and can also display wallpapers or screensavers, which is a nice feature. The internal TFT display is clear and bright, although smaller than some comparable clamshells.
The Nokia 6170 is well-featured. Its specification includes a VGA camera (640 x 480 pixels) with a video recording capability and a media player. The Nokia 6170 has good connectivity via high-speed data transfer on EDGE networks and USB. It's missing a Bluetooth connection, but has most features that you'd expect from a modern phone, such as 40-voice polyphonic ringtones and Java games, plus a few extras and comes packaged in a nice metal case. Battery life is also excellent. A tad heavy, but no worse than most Motorola clamshells. Memory is limited so don't expect to store too many video clips.

Nokia 6101 Review

The Nokia 6101 is a compact camera phone with a clamshell design. By Nokia's standards, it's very small, but it's still heavy compared with similar clamshells from Samsung. Still, Nokia are definitely making progress in the physical design of their clamshell phones, and this is a very attractive phone. There are dual colour displays and the keypad is thoughtfully laid out, with a 5-way navigation key and a dedicated camera button.
The camera is a standard VGA resolution, with the ability to take self-portraits using the external display as a viewfinder. This is not a great feature as the external display is so small - a rotating camera would have been a better solution. The camera has a night mode, but no flash. The camera also functions as a video recorder using the 3GP format. Nokia have partnered with Kodak to let you upload your photos to the Kodak website and have them printed and sent to your address. This is a service that you have to pay for, of course.
There is also a voice recorder, and the phone has an FM stereo radio. This works only when the supplied headset is plugged in, as the headset wire is used as the FM aerial. MP3 tracks can be used as ringtones, although there is no capability for listening to MP3's otherwise.
Overall the Nokia 6101 is a good mid-range camera phone with no obvious defects. Although it's quite expensive for what you get, it can just about hold its own with the current range of mid-priced clamshells from Motorola and Samsung, and is probably Nokia's most successful implementation of a flip-phone yet. Before buying, just bear in mind that for the same kind of money you could get a Motorola V620 with Bluetooth and a much better screen.

Hot on the heels of the Nokia 7210, comes the Nokia 6100, offering nearly all of the Nokia 7210's features, but with a digital camera option instead of the built-in radio. All this in an amazingly lightweight and compact package that oozes both style and sophistication! In fact it's Nokia's smallest and lightest phone ever.
Very similar in spec to the 7210/6610, the Nokia 6100 offers a colour screen, polyphonic ringtones, triple band, as well as Java™ capability. Its keypad is user-friendly and incorporates a nice 4-way scroll button. The Java capability means that you can download games just as easily as downloading ringtones or graphics. As well as Java games, you can also download applications like personal assistants, travel and information tools. Pre-installed Java applications include a calculator, currency and measurement converter, stopwatch, and two games.
MMS means that you can send and receive multimedia messages containing text, MIDI audio files, and graphics or animations.
The digital camera option comes as a camera/headset that plugs into the Nokia 6100's pop-port.
The Nokia 6100 is a nice enough phone, but its only real WOW factor is its light weight. Its specification is lower than the Nokia 7210 or Nokia 6610 and users have reported a number of reliability issues - see the user reviews below for example.
