Nollywood filmmaker, Allwell Ademola, passed away on Saturday (December 27, 2025) at the age of 43. She passed away at Ancilla Hospital, Agege, where she was taken to for medical attention. There are unconfirmed reports that she suffered a heart attack. The news of her death came as a rude shock to many of her colleagues, some of who spoke to her earlier on Saturday.

Allwell Ademola hails from Abeokuta in Ogun State, Nigeria. Her grandfather was former Chief Justice of Nigeria, Sir Adetokunbo Ademola. She was born, August 9, 1982. She attended Western College, Yaba, and Itologe Girls Secondary School, Surulere. She studied English at Obafemi Awolowo University. After her unviversity education, she obtained a Diploma in Performing Arts from Jovis Perfection Press, Surulere.

She started acting at an early age. She decided to start acting professionally after completing her university degree. One of the first movies she appeared in was The Drought Promise (produced by Cliff Igwe). Allwell Ademola was a multi-talented filmmaker. She was more than just an actress. She also wrote, produced, and directed several movies, during her lifetime. Some of the movies she starred in include Shattered Innocence, Surrogate, Edidi Ibi, Omo Emi, Mimi's Voice, and Third Eye.

Kunle Afolayan Begins Filming Season 2 of Anikulapo Series

Award-winning filmmaker, Kunle Afolayan, has started filming the much-anticipated second season of his popular Netflix series, Anikulapo. The first season ended on a cliffhanger and it was naturally expected that there would be a second season. The new season is being shot at KAP Film Village in Igbojaye, Oyo State.

From all indications, many of the characters from the first season, will be returning for the second season of the series. There are also indications that part of the series may be shot in Ghana.

Veteran actress, Onyeka Onwenu, has passed on at the age of 72. She died in Lagos, on Tuesday (July 30, 2024), after performing at the 80th birthday party of Stella Okoli (MD, Emzor Pharmaceuticals). According to reports, she slumped after taking her seat, following her performance. She was immediately rushed to Reddington Specialist Hospital, where she eventually gave up the ghost.

Onyeka Onwenu was not only an actress, she was also a singer, journalist, social activist, and politician. She will be remembered among other things, for her contributions to Nollywood. Some of the movies she appeared in are Women's Cot, Risng Moon, Half of a Yellow Sun, and Lionheart, to name a few. in 2006 she won the Africa Movie Academy Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role for her performance in the movie Widow’s Cot.

Onwenu hailed from Arondizuogu, a town in Ideato North, Imo State, but was raised in Port Harcourt, the capital city of Rivers State. She was the youngest daughter, D.K Onwenu, was an educationist and politician, who died when she was just 4 years old. Onwenu obtained a BA in International Relations and Communication from Wellesley College, Massachusetts, and an MA in Media Studies from The New School for Social Research, New York.

Second-generation filmmaker, Samuel Olasehinde (aka Samuel Ajirebi), has wrapped up filming Egbeji, a short film funded under the Accelerate Film Project of Accelerate Studios. He participated in the 2024 edition of the Accelerate Film Project and his pitch for Egbeji was one of five pitches which received funding.

The film was shot over the course of five days at Ibrahim Chatta's film village on the outskirts of Ibadan. Egbeji was written and directed by Samuel Olasehinde. The movie was produced by Rhoda Idowu. Executive producers are Colette Otusheso and Esse Akwawa.

He is the son of industry veteran, Kayode Olasehinde, popularly known as Ajirebi. Samuel Olasehinde started out in the film industry as a child actor. He studied Law at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile Ife. After completing his Law degree in 2017, he returned to the film industry. His acting credits include Elenini (Africa Magic series), Okoto, and Antecedent. His writing credits include Different Strokes and Malaika.

She was born July 24, 1964 at the University Teaching Hospital (LUTH) Lagos to Mr. John & Mrs. Christiana Chukwurah in Yaba, Lagos. She attended All Saints Primary School, Yaba, Lagos. She also attended Queen of the Rosary College, Onitsha (Nigeria). She went on to study acting and speech at the Department of Dramatic Arts at University of Ife, in Ile-Ife, south-western Nigeria.

She began acting as early as 1979. For a time, she was part of the University of Ibadan Performing Company (UPC). She left UPC in 1981, in order to further her studies. In 1982, she starred in the movie Owo L'agba (Money Power) for, which she won the award for Best Actress at the FESPACO film festival in 1984. She became a professional actor, and a household name, in 1984 with her role in the soap opera Mirror in the Sun, which was directed by Lola Fani-Kayode. In 1984.

Over the course of her career, she has starred in numerous television productions, movies, and stage plays. When Nollywood emerged in the 90s, she joined the train, and she has featured in numerous Nollywood movies. Some of the movies, which she has starred in are High Blood Pressure, Emotional Risk, Silence of the Gods, My Sister, My Child, Ògìdán, Egg of Life, and Glamour Girls.

It is almost impossible to fully capture the significance and importance of Clarion Chukwurah in the Nigerian film industry. She seems to have been on our screens almost all our life, and like old wine, she has kept improving with age. Acclaimed Nigerian filmmaker, C.J "Fiery" Obasi (Ojuju, O-Town, Mami Wata) has been selected as a member of the jury for the Concorso Cineasti del Presente section of the Locarno Film Festival. "... I have said goodnight MAMA many times. Many times indeed. However, I never imagined that I would be saying goodnight for the last time to my mother when she called to see how I was doing. Forever caring, forever loving that was our mother. There are three of us, my eldest sister June, my brother Niyi, and I was the last born.

Mama was born Princess Teresa Otieyeke Anao to the Anao family of Eko Anao at Oghabgbo quarters in Opoji town in the Esan district of Edo state. She had ten siblings, six brothers, and four sisters. She was born a princess into the Royal Ewokhimi town. Her mother was known as Christina Onaiwu Anao, and her father was known as Chief James Oziegbe Anao. Her mother was a very successful businesswoman. She had a sewing institute, bakery, and confectionery. She also owned the famous Flamingo hotel that was the main entertainment hub of Ekpoma town where Victor Uwaifo played many times. Her Father Chief James Oziegbe served for three decades in the Medical Department of the Colonial government of Nigeria and retired as the Chief Nursing Superintendent in 1951.

At the age of 13 she attended the famous Mary Mount college in Agbor, Delta state. Afterwards she got a scholarship to study at the Pitman secretarial college in London, England at the age of seventeen. She gave birth to her first child named June on the 3rd May 1959 in Wandsworth , Streatham.

My mother it was who ignited my interest in travelling and seeing other countries. In the year 1976 she started a travel and tourism company called TESS TRAVELS AND TOURS. This company became one of the largest and most successful tourism companies in the country. Tess Travels was the first travel agent to be automated in airline reservations system in Nigeria. Tess Travels was essentially a corporate oriented travel agent that serviced companies like the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, Nigeria wire and cables ibadan, Exide batteries ibadan , the American embassy lagos, Triplex glass ibadan, Ferodo brake company ibadan, Leyland motors and the university of ibadan to name just a few.

Mama earned many awards and titles for her hard work and dedication to travel and tourism in Nigeria. She became the first female president of NANTA – National association of Nigerian travel agents in the year 1993 till 1995 and was awarded with a lifetime achievement award for her services to travel and tourism in the year 2022. She attended travel conferences all over the world as an IATA approved agent and as Nigeria’s representative. I took advantage of that once by representing her in Cartagena, Colombia when she could not make it. Other conferences happened in Egypt, United Kingdom to name but a few. To date, my mother is the only Nigerian with a travel and tourism company to open an office inside the United States embassy. Many times people will queue up round Mama’s office block in Tafawa Balewa square under the erroneous impression that she was responsible for issuing American visas. She promptly reminded them that she was not.

She simply facilitated very successfully Nigerian and American tourists visiting the two countries. Mama was responsible for bringing in many tourist groups to tour the sites of Nigeria. She successfully installed a mini stadium at the Emir of Kano’s palace in Kano so foreign guests could enjoy the annual Durbar that took place there. She introduced me to the royalty and history of the Northern empires. I remember being in awe when I entered the palace of the Emir of Kano as far back as the early nineties. She also introduced me to the Emir of Argungu to which a friendship was formed. My mother used to organize tourists from far afield as Japan, Russia and the United States. Under the umbrella of TESS TRAVELS AND TOURS she took them to the waterfalls across Yorubaland, the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, the Osun Osogbo festival, the historic town of Badagry and so much more.

Mama was also president of the cycling association and regularly organized cycling marathons across the country. She sponsored many youth groups including the young footballers association of Amuwo Odofin. She was responsible for setting up the Ekpoma Okpa association in London to help residents of Edo state who lived in London.

My mother took me to countries like Hong Kong, Singapore, Spain, Morocco to name but a few. I have very vivid memories of travelling to Las Palmas in Spain and watching the bullfights in all their splendor and ferocity. Later Mama acquired a property in Rocas Del Mar in Marbeya, Spain. I think out of all my siblings I was the one who enjoyed that villa the most. It was located in splendid Spanish countryside, with a luxury swimming pool and a vibrant nightlife. I would go horse-riding in the day, swim in the evening and enjoy the Spanish nightlife. My friends and I would grill barbecue chicken and sip Spanish margaritas. Occassionally my mum would call to make sure I was keeping the villa clean and behaving myself... Yes mum I would reply everything is fine while gesturing to my friends to keep their voices down so my mum would not hear that we were having a party.

Later Mama acquired a beautiful four bedroom mansion in Saltdean, West Sussex in England. I stayed there many times commuting between there and London. Christmas time was spent in a traditional English setting with my elder brother and I sorting out presents under a huge Christmas tree.Mama always made sure the family was together with my brother’s wife Barbara and my niece Adesua joining us from their cottage home in Hove, Brighton. Niyi’s irish wife was amazing at cooking Nigerian food as she was taught expertly by Mama. Even Niyi's friends were so impressed by Barbara’s cooking of Nigerian food..she always proudly told them that she was taught by her mother-in-law.

Mama was very encouraging of my career choice. She made a bold move in 1995 after I fell foul of Abacha ‘s military junta after protesting the hanging of Ken Saro Wiwa and nine Ogoni activists. In the midst of all the fear,confusion and chaos of that troubled time Mama sponsored myself and a group of eight actors to put on a stage play at the MUSON centre on Lagos island. The entire group was flown over from the United Kingdom and Mama sponsored the entire production. She even helped to decorate the venue with flowers and so on to create the perfect setting for a stage play. I remember my good friend, Jahman Anikulapo helped to compere the show and introduce the actors. The stage play was titled WHAT THE BUTLER SAW by Joe Orton.

There is not enough space in this short letter to really say all that my mother meant to me. Suffice to say that she was indeed my world. I will always remember how my mother came back from permanent retirement in the United Kingdom and for over five years looked after and cared for our father who was very ill and frail. She was there day and night tending to his every need and showing all the love and care she could muster. Whenever my father and I were alone he would always request that I should keep thanking my mother for all she was doing for him. The bitter hand of death dealt a cruel blow on that fateful day of May 23, 2024. My mothers passing made me realize that the dead are not truly dead. They live within and around us.

As I escorted my mothers body to the morgue I played on my music speaker AVE MARIA which is one of her favourite catholic hynms. I could distinctly hear her scolding me as usual and telling me the music was too loud and I should turn it down. I take comfort in the fact that she was there at the premiere of the BREATH OF LIFE and also saw me pick up the award for the AMVCA award for BEST Actor. Always scolding again, she called me in the morning after the award night to exclaim as to how ridiculous my hairstyle was and she didn’t like it. She ended by saying I should never attempt such again. A day later she was beaming with pride and sent me a Whatsapp message to say so. I felt happy because my mother is my strongest critic.. Wale you are speaking too fast..slow down..work on your diction..

What most people don’t know is that my mother was an amazing actress. She was an active member of the IBadan Players which included theatrical luminaries like Tunji Oyelana, Zulu Sofola and Wole Soyinka. Zulu Sofola, one of Africa’s most formidable female writers was my mothers best friend. The writer of such classical pieces like THE WIZARD OF LAW, KING EMENE- TRAGEDY OF A REBELLION and most famously WEDLOCK OF THE GODS. When Aunt Zulu would visit my mother, Mama would complain that I am always playing around and drawing caricatures. Aunt Zulu would reprimand her and collect my caricature drawings and tell my Mum...my dear this boy is an artist! As a famous poet once said... all that lives must die... passing through nature to eternity…

Mama lived a glorious, successful and fulfilling life. We thank God for her life. She is mother to three children, June, Niyi and Wale, grandmother to six children and great-grandmother to nine children. I take comfort in the following excerpts from a poem by Henry Scott Holland:

Death is nothing at all

I have only slipped away to the next room

I am I and you are you

Whatever we were to each other

That we still are

Life means all that it ever meant.

It is the same that it ever was

There is absolute unbroken continuity

Why should I be out of mind

Because I am out of sight?

I am but waiting for you

For an interval

Somewhere. Very near.

KM17 is described as a tale of two sisters and their last ride into the unknown. The film follows Chika, a young woman who sets out to find her missing elder sister, after she loses faith in the police. Her search takes a dangerous turn when she boards a taxi being driven by a psychotic driver.
