This public comment dialogue session went from 608om on a day that started at 8am. Lisa Jackson and all but 1 of the the Task Force members decided not to attend, decided not to hear the input of the people after tell folks all day how this was going to be a ground up approach and the people knowledge and expertise was needed. This is from the 2nd meeting of the Presidential executive order created Gulf Coast Ecosystem Restoration Task Force. This will be distributed very raw CSpan style. On January 14, 2011, I traveled to Laporte, Pa to document a forum entitled "The Cumulative Environmental Effects of Gas Drilling" with Penn State Geologist Terry Engelder, who fame or notoriety was his estimate of vast reserves of recoverable gas in the Marcellus shale, and Cornell Civil Engineer Tony Ingraffea, who as an expert on fracture mechanics and who previously worker for Slumburger. ;Sponsored by Protect Eagles Mere Association and Responsible Drilling Alliance, this was a much anticipated event as Engelder and Ingraffea had previously been academic collaborators but now stand on opposite sides of the fracking controversy. I, however, was intrigued by the location on Route 42 in the Endless Mountains, and proximity to Eagles Mere Park and Lake and conducted interviews regarding conerns in Eagle Mere over fracking for gas.

Friday, 11 Feb 2011. It’s 18 days that changed the history of a country Roy Casagranda cares deeply about. “It’s unimaginable and I have a feeling it will take a long time for it to set in, to realize that this guy [ President Hosni Mubarak ] is really, really gone,” said Casagranda. Casagranda, a political science professor at Austin Community College returned from visiting family in Egypt just days before the uprising started. “I wanted to be there,” he said. During the uprising Casagranda kept in touch with family and friends in Egypt mainly via Facebook and Skype. “My younger relatives are unbelievably excited and they can’t believe this guy is finally gone,” he said. Over at The University of Texas , Milad Pournik, a graduate student from Iran, remembers the feeling he got from Egyptians when he lived there last year working at the United Nations. “When I was living there, I felt people were unhappy,” Pournik said. Pournik’s parents still live in Cairo, but were evacuated by the UN to Greece. Pournik hopes the Egyptian revolution will be contagious across the Middle East. “I really hope this is not just a victory for Egypt, but a victory for freedom and the progress toward more representation and true democracies throughout the region and throughout the world,” Pournik said. Back at ACC, Casagranda said he can’t wait to return to Egypt to see his family and to see what life is like after Mubarak. “I have a feeling that I am going to go back to a country where Egyptians feel good about themselves and are proud about who they are,” Casgranda said. The next day after I met Paul a winter storm hit the area and Albuquerque experienced record colds. Paul is sleeping under stairs behind a building. I sure hope he found someplace warm to last out the storm. All of the three homeless men I talked to that morning had frequent visits to the emergency room for various reasons. All three were also victims on violence on the streets. All three were veterans. Paul is scared he is getting used to homelessness. He has given up looking for work because there is no work. She had heard local scientist and world renowned author Sandra Steingraber explain that 40% to 70% water used in the hydrofracking process never sees the light of day again. "When you brush your teeth leaving tap water running, you are not "wasting" water in the sense that it goes into the sewage system and eventually enters a stream, a river, a lake or the ocean, evaporates, turns into rain and and falls to earth to facilitate life once again." But the water frackers poison and then inject into the earth is gone...forever." Steingraber, a biologist who has written extensively about environmental toxins, also expressed grave concerns about the level of carbon emissions and methane leakage which inevitably accompany large-scale industrial hydrofracking operations. The Ahava shop in London’s Monmouth Street was occupied by two Palestine solidarity activists who attached themselves to a concrete-filled oil barrel at approx 10:45am. This was the fifth successful occupation of the UK Ahava shop to take place since January 2009. Critical mass is a bicycling event where a large number of bicyclists take to the streets at the same time. They are designed to draw attention to the fact that bicycles are an alternative to cars. ; On May 28th, 2010, a critical mass demonstration was held in Los Angeles California. One of the riders, Manuel Gallegos, saw some LAPD officers harassing in his fellow cyclists, so he took out his cell phone and began to record. It didn’t take long for him to catch the LAPD misusing their alleged power. Gallegos filmed several cops as they kicked at passing bicyclists and even knocked one off their bike. When Gallegos saw this action, he yelled at the police. As soon as the police saw that their deed had been recorded, they rushed over and arrested Gallegos and smashed his phone to the pavement. Luckily, the video survived. Gallegos has recently filed a lawsuit against LAPD after an internal investigation’s result was not made public. The donor, George Maciano, is the co-founder of Guess jeans. Maciano believed that some of his employees were stealing from his business so he asked the Sheriff to conduct an investigation. The investigation continued on for nearly 18 months despite the fact that several outside accounting audits concluded that there had been no wrong doing. During the investiagion, Maciano donated 100,000 dollars to Sheriff Baca’s charity organizations and another $2000 to the Sheriff’s political committes. The LA Times’ Robert Faturechi raised a valid concern by pointing out that elected officials that accept campaign contributions have a conflict of interest when they are also responsible for policing the community. Apparently, when a rich person thinks they need the police, they can purchase the services they require. If the LA County Sheriff’s department was a private agency accepting payment for services rendered, there would be no issue with this story… but since Baca “provides” a mandatory service, all of the residents of LA County paid for this unneeded investigation. http://www.click2houston.com/news/26478356/detail.html --------------------- On Thursay January 20th, the FBI initiated the largest crackdown in the organizations history. Just before dawn FBI agents in several Eastern states moved swiftly to arrest 127 suspected mafia thugs. Solano’s attorney, Brooke Gamble, said that she doesn’t understand why there was arrest when Solano had already admitted to his deeds. Solano was able to post a $25,000 bond and was only in jail for three hours. While incarcerated, the ex-sheriff was not placed in the county jail, but rather held in the medical wing. According to the suspension letter, no damage was done to the truck and the citation was written in an effort to get the boy's mother to discipline him. "The when and how is very dangerous to predict because there's always some factor that blindsides you that you didn't expect," Pulitzer-winning journalist Chris Hedges said in an exclusive interview. "It doesn't look good. But exactly how it plays out and when it plays out, having covered disintegrating societies, it's impossible to tell." He explained that he learned this lesson as events unfolded around him in the fall of 1989. Then, members of the opposition to the Soviet Empire told him that they predicted travel across the Berlin Wall separating East from West Germany would open within the year. "Within a few hours, the wall didn't exist," he said. Hedges was one of the 131 activists were arrested in an act of civil disobedience outside the White House yesterday, even as Obama was unveiling a new report citing progress in the Afghanistan war. Speaking to Raw Story on Wednesday night, he said the signs of US collapse are plain to see and compared the country's course through Afghanistan to Soviet Russia's. "We're losing [the war in Afghanistan] in the same way the Red Army lost it," he said. "It's exactly the same configuration where we sort of control the urban centers where 20 percent of the population lives. The rest of the country where 80 percent of the Afghans live is either in the hands of the Taliban or disputed." "Foreigners will not walk the streets of Kabul because of kidnapping, and journalists regularly meet Taliban officials in Kabul because the whole apparatus is so porous and corrupt," he said. One day after this interview was conducted, reports hit the global media noting the CIA's warning to President Obama, that the Pakistan-supported Taliban could still regain control of the country. Hedges predicted that President Obama's war report released Thursday would "contradict not only [US] intelligence reports but everything else that is coming out of Afghanistan." His prediction came startlingly true: the CIA's own assessment was said to stand in striking contrast with President Obama's report. Defense Secretary Robert Gates, however, insisted that the US controlled more territory in Afghanistan than it did a year ago. 'A corporate coup d'état in slow motion' Hedges said he attended the protest and planned to get arrested because he is against the corporate powers that have enveloped the nation. "We've undergone a corporate coup d'état in slow motion," he said. "Our public education system has been gutted. Our infrastructure is corroding and collapsing. Unless we begin to physically resist, they are going to solidify neo-feudalism in this country." "If we think that Obama is bad, watch the next two years because these corporate forces have turned their back on him," Hedges warned. Hedges, author of "Death of the Liberal Class," said that his vision of America is one with a functioning social democracy, which stands in stark contrast to the nihilism of the corporate state. "American workers, as they are repeatedly told, will have to become competitive with prison labor in China," he said. "That's where we're headed, and all the pillars of the liberal establishment are complicit in this." "At least if you get sick in the UK, you don't go bankrupt or die," he added. Hedges said that another pressure point is the US dollar, which he pointed out had been dropped by Russia and China in favor of modified ruble/renminbi exchanges. "A few more deals like that, and our currency becomes junk," he said. Hedges continued, "As long as we have relative stability, these lunatic fringe movements can be held at bay, but if we don't undertake serious structural reform, which we're not doing, then it is inevitable that we will come to a tremendous crisis - economic and political as well as environmental." September 14, 2009--The original recording of change ringing bells on Sunday September 6 has been edited with architectural shots of the Financial District and scenes of Wall Street during President Obama's speech to traders and brokers at the Federal Building on Wall Street September 14. The change ringing bells were a gift from a British hedge fund operator; the twelve bells were cast in England (I think) and installed in Trinity Church a few years ago, replacing the normal chiming bells.While the NYT claims that this is the only set of change ringing bells in the US, and only one of two in North America, when I posted this piece on You tube, someone posted a comment saying there were actually 44 sets of change ringing bells in North America. If anyone has further details, please post a comment. Thank you.

Resistance Against Deployment of 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment to Iraq

Five peace activists successfully blockaded six buses carrying Fort Hood Soldiers deploying to Iraq outside Fort Hood's Clarke gate this morning at around 4 a.m. While the activists took the width of Clarke Rd. and slowed the buses to a halt, police made no arrests, but instead beat the activists out of the streets using automatic weapons and police dogs so the deploying Soldiers could proceed.Among those blockading were three veterans of the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and one military spouse. (See attached bios) The action, organized by a group calling themselves "Fort Hood Disobeys," was aimed at preventing the deployment of the 3rd Armored Cavalry Regiment Soldiers to what the veterans termed an illegal and immoral occupation.While standing in the street, the activists held banners reading "Occupation is a Crime" and "Please Don't Make the Same Mistake We Did. RESIST NOW." From the TX HW-190 overpass, additional supporters attempted to hang larger banners that read, "Tell the Brass: 'KISS MY ASS' Your family needs you more" "Sick of Fighting Your Wars" and "Col. Allen [3 ACR Commander]: Do not deploy wounded Soldiers."This latest deployment comes less than two weeks after President Obama announced the second end to combat operations in Iraq. FHD organizers denounced this as a lie, and pointed to the deployment of the 3rd ACR, a combat regiment, to Iraq as clear proof. This excessive use of force followed months of harassment and surveillance of community activists. At every stage, local officials have refused to release the documentation behind what they did, from the origins of dubious search warrants to joint powers agreements.The Republican Party's efforts to control the message and crush dissenting voices were led by one of the top local Republicans, troubled Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher, who personally spearheaded the "pre-emptive raid" strategy and spun the media by claiming captured household items were weapons (most notably, the buckets of recycled grey water he dubbed "urine"). At every stage, from fake urine to riot threats, messages of fear were distributed to chill Minnesotans from exercising their First Amendment rights.Just days before Fletcher launched high-profile preemptive raids against protesters, two of his closest aides, Mark Naylon and Timothy Rehak, were found guilty on federal charges after they attempted to steal $6,000 in an FBI sting. To shore up his murky political future, Fletcher staged an authoritarian spectacle unparalleled in Minnesota history."We have unlawful search and seizure. We have unlawful arrest without probably cause.... Mass arrest and detention without probable cause.... Then you have excessive force. They'll never be charged as such by any prosecutor." This plan culminated with the blocking and flashbang bombing of a peaceful march organized by anti-war activists on September 4th as John McCain delivered his acceptance speech at the Xcel Center.Within weeks, John McCain's campaign turned to attacking Barack Obama on the same grounds as the RNC Welcoming Committee, a group that provided logistical help such as housing, food and a convergence center for demonstrators. This rapidly produced "election cut" shows how the government — even in a liberal state like Minnesota — easily rolled over to domestic militarization and criminal abandonment of Constitutional freedoms.
