Teen Parents is a ministry of Central Ohio Youth for Christ. Many teens who are affected by pregnancy drop out of traditional school and only attempt to finish their schooling through computer-based education programs. Seldom does their home environment support this effort due to child care issues. Teen Parents provide these teens with free transportation, on-site child care, tutoring and computer time to work through their online curriculum. Their staff and volunteers also mentor these young parents and make themselves available to them for counseling and guidance. Their goal is to help them be successful in their parenting, their education, and their relationships.

Central Ohio Young Survival Coalition Seeks Annual Fundraiser Chair

The Young Survival Coalition offers resources, connections and outreach so young women with breast cancer feel supported, empowered and hopeful. The YSC believes that no woman under 40 should be left to face breast cancer alone.

The Central Ohio Chapter of the YSC seeks a chair for their annual fundraising event in November. The event chair need not be a breast cancer survivor...just someone willing to take on a leadership role with an AWESOME group of women.

Philanthropy Friday Behind the Scenes with Children's Body-Image Foundation

This week I highlighted Children's Body-Image Foundation for the Columbus Underground Philanthropy Friday feature article. If you missed the article you can read it here.

For a behind the scenes piece I asked Executive Director, Courtney Hodges to share a story that touched her. This is what Courtney had to say:

"I have a personal reason why it’s so important to me to help these kids, which is the driving force behind everything that I do for them. Somebody that I grew up with and loved dearly on a few different levels passed from cancer when we were still kids, but that experience has transformed because of all the kids I see and get to help now.

One of our kids, Sam, is 9 years old and has Osteosarcoma. Sam's case is extremely aggressive and has metastasized into both lungs. Sam’s just had his right leg amputated and is going through extremely invasive surgery on both lungs to scrape out tumors. Just last week they took 35 tumors out of Sam's left lung and in six weeks will do the same to the right.

Sam is extremely close to our foundation family. Sam loves GI Joe and a few weeks ago we surprised Sam at Nationwide Children's Hospital by bringing in two amazing US Army troops, a Major and Sergeant.

Major Edwards was awarded the bronze medal of bravery a few years back because of saving 240 US Troops in Iraq. During the visit, Major Edwards gave this medal to Sam. That brings tears to my eyes every time I think about it. From one hero to another, and rightfully so. Amazing."

Enchanted Closet believes that every girl should have the opportunity to attend her high school prom. Unfortunately, many miss this once-in-a-lifetime event because they cannot afford to buy a dress. Their mission is to physically, mentally, and emotionally outfit Metro Atlanta high school girls through programs that prepare them for social and professional milestones.

Enchanted Closet is facing a high demand for prom dresses, especially plus size prom dresses. New or gently used (dry-cleaned) dresses are needed in sizes 16 and over for metropolitan Atlanta teens. In addition to prom dresses, they also accept jewelry, handbags, hair clips, and wraps/shawls.

Habitat ReStores are outlets that accept donated goods for resale. While every ReStore is a little different, most focus on home improvement goods—furniture, home accessories, building materials and appliances. These donated goods are sold to the general public at a fraction of the retail price to help local affiliates fund the construction of Habitat homes within their communities.

Restore does it's part in going green. This environmental initiative provides an environmentally and socially responsible way to keep good, reusable materials out of the waste stream and simultaneously provide funding for all of Habitat’s community improvement work.

Philanthropy Friday Behind the Scenes with Lifeline of Ohio

This week I featured Lifeline of Ohio on Columbus Underground. To get a behind the scenes look at the organization I asked them to share a stand-out moment they could share. Here is what they shared with me.

"There are many remarkable stories about people in every community who have been touched by donation. These might not be stories that make the headlines, but they are stories of generosity, hope and gratitude."

This month, a local liver recipient is celebrating his second transplant anniversary! Andy Furr, of Grove City, a dedicated husband and father to three, was diagnosed with cirrhosis of the liver in July 2006. His health became progressively worse, causing bouts of dementia, nausea and eventually requiring him to resign from his job.

Andy was listed for a transplant in early February of 2008 and just a few weeks later he received a liver and a second chance at life. He is extremely grateful to his donor for the opportunity to see his children grow and live life to the fullest. Andy was also able to get back on his motorcycle a few months after the transplant - after spending years in hospital beds, the freedom of the open road was just what he needed!

Another story that recently moved us is featured in a statewide campaign to promote donation that centers on a green chair. The campaign emphasizes the need for donors and tells Ohioans, “Don’t let another chair go empty,” encouraging them to register as organ donors.

Sadly, Denny Hile’s chair went empty in May 1997 while waiting for a heart transplant. Denny was diagnosed with congestive heart failure in 1987 and lived with the condition for years before he was listed for a heart transplant. As he waited for a second chance at life, his health deteriorated, he had numerous trips to the hospital, was forced to retire from his job and was confined to his recliner, as basic tasks were too much for him.

Denny told his daughter, Debby Rice from Sunbury, Ohio, that once he received a heart transplant he wanted to advocate for organ and tissue donation. He waited 21 months for a heart transplant, but it didn’t come in time.

Today, Debby promotes donation in memory of her father. She hopes that by sharing his story through the Donate Life Ohio Green Chair campaign and as a Donate Life Ambassador with Lifeline of Ohio she can encourage others to register as donors and save lives. Examples can be seen at www.DooDahParade.com. They would like to see a theme that reflects liberty & lunacy. The Doo Dah Parade is more than the Greatest Event in Western Civilization; it is an event that makes a statement about expressing your 1st Amendment rights, through humor.

Note: It does not have to be red, white, and blue in color, nor should it be a typical “patriotic” poster. And, yes. They may ask for changes.

Another good tip is to make the design with a vertical orientation. The design will then be incorporated into the T-Shirt design. In short, and in non-technical terms, we want the Poster and T-Shirt to have continuity.

Having your poster design chosen is a great DisHonor which will make you part of the history of The Doo Dah Parade. The designer also gets mentioned on the Web-Site, and they give the winner a few valuable goodies too! In the end, Friends of Doo Dah owns the right to the art once completed and may use it in other promotional ways.
