10(is) Questions: Get to Know Jonnie from Nonnie Threads

We love the versatile, functional, yet undeniably stylish menswear in Jonnie Rettele’s line Nonnie Threads. We also love that all of her designs are produced right here in Chicago. So, we asked the designer to answer a few questions for us about her inspiration, her designs, and her favorite pieces this season.

I love my job because… it’s MINE. Every decision you make in a day has a chance to be rewarding.

I would describe my style… as creature of habit/borderline uniform. I tend to wear the same silhouettes from day to day, which include my favorite vintage pieces accompanied with some interesting jewelry.

I get my inspiration from… life. The most arbitrary experience can fuel a new idea.

On my playlist right now… Today it has been Edith Piaf and episodes from This American Life.

If I lived anywhere other than Chicago… I would probably not hate winter so much, but I would miss the restaurants and the people.

I can’t get through the day without… coffee.

My studio/office is… shared with other amazing designers who make it easy to go to work everyday.

When I’m not working… I’m cooking, gardening, playing board games, sitting by the lagoon in Humboldt Park with my dog, or starting some new hobby with my husband.

Did you always want to be a designer? I didn’t recognize it as an option until the people in my life were encouraging me to follow that path.

What makes Nonnie Threads unique? Since a female is behind the design, the overall aesthetic is really soft and simple. Each piece is still interesting without being excessive.

Who is the Nonnie man? He is a man who cares, but doesn’t obsess, about his appearance. A man who embraces individuality while blending in.

How do you start a collection? It’s sort of one big tornado or ideas, fabrics, and colors that lands into place eventually.

What is your favorite piece in your current collection? The Twill Shawl Collar Vest! Both the plaid and the twill vest has been a big hit so far, but the twill is my favorite.

Where did the name Nonnie Threads come from? Nonnie was a family nickname created my by niece, who was unable to pronounce my name correctly.

Behind the Scenes with Nonnie Threads

At Purely, we realize that finding the best designers is not always easy. That’s why we’re giving you exclusive, behind-the-scenes interviews with some of our favorite Purely designers.

Last week, we sat down with Jonnie Rettele of Nonnie Threads to find out her obsessions, what inspires her, and to hear more about her upcoming collections.

Inspired by her family’s horse racing history, she reflects turn of the century jockey silks in some of the patterns in her line. Her current obsession is accessories. She is now regularly working with leather, but always has an eye to the future. She loves thinking of new ideas.

Jonnie revels in the technical aspect of menswear because she considers herself a technical, meticulous person. Her focus is on self expression. Although she typically is not designing for women, she can’t help but pour herself into her designs.

Her focus tends to be on excelling at the basics of menswear. Uniforms inspire her more than anything, which is why they will be the focus of her next project. She plans to conduct interviews to find out what elements people believe come together to form a good uniform.

To Jonnie, fashion is purely feelings. A woman wears powerful heals so she’ll feel powerful. Similarly, if she spends all day in her pajamas, she will feel lazy.

A friend in the music industry recently asked Jonnie why more local designers don’t ban together to pool resources. This spurred an idea in her to work more with other designers and do more collaborations.

“Spectator” is a recent collaboration with Abigail Glaum-Lathbury from the womenswear line Elmidae. Because she loves to pick up new skills, like learning how to screen print with fabric, Jonnie values being able to do these kinds of partnerships with designers she respects. Collaboration helps a designer understand another designer’s process and learn from it.

Jonnie is originally from the St. Louis Area. She has been in Chicago for the past 11 years, and loves it. To her, it feels like a large city but also has smaller pockets that are very community oriented. People in Chicago are also open to sharing resources, which helped Jonnie with her start in the fashion world.

Jonnie got her start by quitting her job, and simply making. She started making shirts and other apparel, not making anything for a specific purpose. But she quickly realized how much she enjoyed what she was making, and everything began to fall into place.
