Hey guys, I love your podcast. It’s entertaining and thought
provoking. You all seem to genuinely love the show.

I only have a small observation. I noticed that the stranger has
bright blue eyes, but Henry has green eyes. This probably means that
they can’t be the same person.

I like the therory of Pinochio being the 7 year old to find Emma on the freeway, however the Blue Fairy says “All magic has its limits and the tree can protect only one.” [continued]

We agree that magic has its limits and the writers don’t seem to break the rules they set for themselves.

Great idea! Perhaps the storybook was originally a historical log from one of the royal scribes.

Genie and 1,001 wishes

Had to write in response this week’s episode about “Fruit of the Poisonous Tree.” You guys were theorizing about genie’s reference to a 1,001 wishes. I’m pretty sure it simply a reference to the origin of the genie story in 1,001 Arabian Nights [The Arabian Nights: Tales of 1,001 Nights] which is kind of an Arab equivalent to the Grimm’s fairy tales. Love the podcast!

Nice catch, Joel! There are so many stories about a Genie, that there’s no reason that Once Upon a Time‘s genie has to be the one from Aladdin.

Henry is growing up, and that’s okay

Just listened to this weeks podcast and here is why I think they have an “OLD” phone…..

Henry (Jared Gilmore) just like WALT in LOST is going to get older and older in real life ..Walt was written off the show since no one else aged and he would have looked out of place  .. Henry is supposed to be 10 and if the show runs for 5 or 6 seasons he will no longer look like a 10 year old…. the clock has started in Storybrooke and he will age and “NEW” technology will be introduced season by season and his growing up and aging in real life will not be a problem

Amazing theory on Regina being the miller’s daughter

Many people believe that Regina is the miller’s daughter. If we suppose that this is true, according to the fairy tale, the miller’s daughter made three deals with Rumpelstiltskin so he would spin straw into gold for her…once for a necklace, once for a ring, and once for her firstborn child. Upon seeing that the miller’s daughter could spin straw to gold, the King married her and thus the miller’s daughter became queen.

The queen gives birth to her first child within the year and Rumpelstiltskin comes back to collect on the deal. The queen is horrified and begs him to release her from the contract. At this point, I have read two variations of the story and the basis of my theory lies in the wording of one. One has Rumpel saying “if you can find out my name in three days”. The other has him saying “if you can GUESS my name in three days”. My theory is that the queen was supposed to GUESS his name. However, we know in the common fairy tale that one of her messengers overheard Rumpelstiltskin say his name in the woods and reported it back to the queen who was then able to “guess” the name and thus keep her baby. What if this is the secret she shared with Snow White? What is Snow White let it slip that the queen did not really “guess” the name, but had been told? If Rumpelstiltskin found out then he would come back to collect saying the deal had not been satisfied. So the queen, in the end, loses her child to Rumpelstiltskin because of Snow White. A child would be something you love most. It would also explain Regina’s obsessive need to have Henry, her trying to get Hansel and Gretel to stay with her and her hatred of Snow White. She is trying to fill the aching void of a lost child. It would also connect to Mr. Gold saying “which deal was that” and Regina’s extremely cold look at him.

If we take this theory a step further…let’s suppose that Rumpelstiltskin collected Evil Queen/Regina’s first born and somehow took him (I’m assuming in this theory that the first born was a baby boy) out of fairy tale land and placed him in the real world. A few years later, all heck breaks loose in fairy tale land and Emma is placed in the magic wooden “box” and ends up in the real world as well. What if many years later, these two lost children of fairy tale land met? Could Regina’s lost child be Henry’s father??? This would add complexity to the story as these two bitter enemies (Regina and Snow White) are in fact grandparents to Henry.  Or, could this be the mysterious stranger in Storybrook?  Would love to hear your thoughts.  Thanks!

Hi Guys,

First off – I love your podcast! It is a blast to listen to and also pick up on items that I may have missed while watching. You all have a great sense of humor! I have quickly become a fan of Once Upon a Time and have always had a fascination with Grimm’s fairy tales, folklore, and a healthy dose of Disney love. This show hits the spot for all of that.

While I could talk about a ton of stuff with this show – I wanted to quickly say my theory about Cinderella’s pregnancy and timing of the birth in Storybrook (just because you guys have discussed this quite a bit).

I think that the birth now is directly connected to the clock starting – aka time starting – at Emma’s arrival. This also means she did not give birth before the curse took place. All of the characters did not age (except for Emma and Henry of course as they were outside of the curse) – so I think that also meant the birth couldn’t happen until now either. The characters have been in this sort of limbo. This could also be a part of the curse as without aging or growth the characters seem to be very accepting of their situations and not show the bravery and drive to change their lives and find happiness (their Happy Endings!). Whether or not breaking the curse means completely freeing the characters to pursue their happy endings and have a life and a home (a home not a cage!) on their terms or returning all of the characters back to Fairytale land is yet to be seen – but isn’t that exciting!

This also raises the conclusion to a fairytale land timeline debate. Daniel succumbed to evidence that he was wrong about Cinderella’s placement in the timeline, and she did, indeed, marry after Snow White.

Outsiders in Storybrooke and the overall story

Hi Guys (and Gal),

I’m a huge fan of the show Once Upon a Time and decided to search iTunes to see if there was a podcast that discussed it.  …  You do a great job at being entertaining and informative. Kudos!

As a new listener (to date, I’ve only listened to the podcast following True North) I was hoping you could touch on a few general topics in future podcasts:

1. Henry often describes Emma as the only ‘outsider’ to enter Storybrook.  However, isn’t Henry himself an outsider that would have had to enter the town at some point after living in the ‘real world’? [continued]

Very true. Also keep in mind that Henry said people can’t leave, and that no one visits. He didn’t say that people can’t visit, just that they don’t.

2. How does a show like this resolve the major storyline?  And how do they drive towards resolution while still allowing the show to have longevity?  If the curse is broken, the show is over.

Once Upon a Time Pod

UPDATE: our Once Upon a Time forums are now open!

We’ve reached the point where we need our own forums so that you, our readers and listeners, can initiate your own conversations.

I’m working on close integration with the blog. I also have several specific requirements about what our forum should do.

We’ll let you know when this is launched. Hopefully within a week. If you’d really like to know the current hold-up, it’s a technical problem with installing forum software on a WordPress Network (AKA WordPress MultiSite) with a mapped domain. Once we get this figured out, the forums will snap right in.

There’s more story to the man who writes the stories, Emma fails at trying to fight evil, and the stranger steals stories.

Fairytale Land

We were all surprised to see Sidney as originally being the Genie.

King Leopold found the lamp, but he’s probably not Aladdin.

So much for our Mr. K theory! He was listed to be in this episode, but his scene was probably cut.

1,001 wishes? This could’ve been an actual number (999 plus the two wishes the Genie had just granted), but he also said that he had seen 1,001 bad choices.

The lamp has three green gems that turn red when the wishes have been used.

Is the lamp the actual power force? “I’ve been Genie of the Lamp …”

The Genie’s limitations of the three wishes and of magic reminded us of Disney’s Aladdin.

King Leopold was a happy man and had nothing he wished for. But he was also a good king.

The Genie wanted freedom and then love. King Leopold said he’d find it at the palace. Maybe the King had Snow White in mind?

Queen Regina kept her name—understandable because she enacted the curse on others but not herself. She was deceptively nice in this episode. Thanks, Marisa, for sending this photo before the episode!

The Genie had strange golden tattoos on his wrists.

Regina’s apple tree that she’s tended to since her childhood and a different land. Notice that we’ve never seen someone eat one of these apples? Unless Snow had one of these apples in “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.”

Who was King Leopold’s first wife? Jasmine? Rumpelstiltskin’s divorced wife? He said, “Love makes people do foolish things.” Was this his regret over marrying Regina?

We all thought we would see what Snow White took from Queen Regina. But was it really just the title of “fairest of them all”? Snow did say in the Pilot that the Evil Queen had tried to kill her just because she was prettier. But Evil Queen had also said that she had told Snow White a secret that she couldn’t keep. Could that secret be the queen’s diary?

Regina’s father was supportive of her evil.

The two-headed Agrabah viper was a nice touch.

Did you notice the “lions” (actually dragons) in the floor of King Leopold’s bedroom?

Queen Regina tells the Genie he has no more value to her, which is similar to what she said to Sidney in “The Thing You Love Most.”

The granting of Genie’s last wish reminds us how full Queen Regina is of herself.

Looking back to “The Thing You Love Most,” the Magic Mirror reminded the Evil Queen about her trading the curse for a poisoned apple. So that trade must be yet to happen!

Storybrooke

Emma mentioned getting Marco (Geppetto) to repair the wooden playset. Marco is a handyman around Storybrooke, which is a carryover from his craftsmanship in Fairytale Land.

Mayor Regina “destroys what people loves,” including Henry’s castle.

Mary Margaret’s phone is dated, but would have been a normal phone around 2007.

Regina’s license plate is “40F5TH.” Perhaps “4 of 5″ or “forty-fifth.” Maybe this is her fourth attempt to make Storybrooke and she was limited to five. Or maybe Storybrooke resets when things get out of hand, and this is the fourth reset out of five.

Sidney was way out of character, but that made sense at the end.

Did Emma use her superpower and see that Sidney was really lying? Or was she blinded by emotion and protective love for Henry?

Sidney still had access to his office, even though he claims he was fired from the paper.

Twice, Sidney spoke of wishes (“I can grant your wish” and “This is what you wished”), and Mr. Gold had once (“One can wish”).

Did Mr. Gold know that Emma was being played? Was this a grin or a grimace?

What do the skeleton keys go to? We know one went to the viper’s box.

Might the Queen have removed her own heart?

David’s wine bottle looks like it says “2006.”

All of this evidence of Storybrooke being in 2007 lends support to an awesome idea that we’ll soon jump a year and a future season will fill in the blanks.

Emma is amazing with instantly finding exactly the files she needs (on a Linux computer, too!)

Mr. Gold is legally “Mr. Gold” on paper! Look carefully at the cut-off letters.

What’s with the Stranger’s bracelet?

Also check out his necklaces: an ornate cross and a talon or tooth.

Mary Margaret still struggles with what’s “right.” But remember that David and Mary Margaret are really married.

Regina’s new playground is just like her castle.

Note that dimensions (at least 4’0″) are visible on the plans.

That’s a Marantz PMD 220 that Sidney uses to record the mayor’s conversations.

Regina has “Magister” chiseled above her office door.

a title of the Middle Ages, given to a person in authority, or to one having a license from a university to teach philosophy and the liberal arts. [dictionary.com]

Henry and Emma start using the radios that Mr. Gold gave them. These will probably be used again later.

More crows in the background while Regina is talking outside.

The background white sculpture in King Leopold’s room is similar in style to the sculptures Regina has in her mayor’s office.

Sidney’s awkward, intoxicated look (just after the creepy hand on the knee). Maybe Sidney is Regina’s new pet?

In a sense, Regina still uses the Mirror to spy on people—except this time, it’s Sidney Glass from the Storybrooke Daily Mirror.

Could the Stranger be a future Henry, coming back for the storybook? Maybe there was some kind of time loop that caused him to be the seven-year-old boy who found Emma. This could make sense why Regina has previously said, “There’s something familiar about him.” He knew were to get the book, too. Maybe he was trying to rescue the book from Regina’s later control.

Or maybe the Stranger is Pinocchio who was sent as a test by Gepetto. He’s never told a lie and seems to go out of his way to avoid telling a lie.

Why does the Stranger want Henry’s book? Maybe he’s a fanatic and finally has evidence to support his theories. Or maybe he’s future Henry and he’s been looking for the book for years and he’s been a writer recording the stories from memory. We don’t want time-travel!

Maybe the Stranger is Regina’s own child, or her lost love.

Lost easter eggs

The police car crashes into a sign with “4″ and “23″ pointing in opposite directions. This is a definite symbolic Lost easter egg.

The boxes from the Hall of Records say they’re from section 4, aisle 8.

First, some news (no spoilers): while a new episode will air this Sunday, January 29, there will be no new episode on February 5, most likely due to that being Superbowl Sunday. Once Upon a Time will return the following week on February 12. We can likely expect some interesting things to happen for February Sweeps.

Now on to some of those teasers. I actually prefer to know about upcoming characters without knowing in which episodes they’ll appear, but as it happens I do now know who will be in which episode. So, ahem, SPOILER WARNING: if you’re the type who won’t read an episode description or watch a commercial before an episode airs, stop reading now.

January 29: “Fruit of the Poisonous Tree”

This episode will feature Snow’s father, King Leopold (played by Richard Schiff of The West Wing). We’ll also see a (the?) genie! In Storybrooke we’ll see The Stranger, Sydney Glass,  and Mr. “K” Krzyszkowski.

“Fruit of the Poisonous Tree” was written by Ian Goldberg and Andrew Chambliss, who brought us episode 6, “The Shepherd.”

Now for the episode description from TV.com; don’t read it if you don’t want to know where the story is going.

While Sydney seeks out Emma’s help against Regina, Mary Margaret and David continue to meet clandestinely. Meanwhile, in the fairytale world, Snow’s father King Leopold receives three wishes from a Genie, who warns him to be careful what he wishes for.

So it looks like Sydney will gain some depth this week. As I said in the podcast, this whole thing with Mary Margaret and David would make me uncomfortable if not for the fact that David and Kathryn aren’t really married; their memories are false, created by the curse. David is, on the other hand, technically married to MM.

February 12: “Skin Deep”

This episode will feature Belle (played by Emilie de Ravine of Lost!), Gaston, Cinderella and/or Ashley, Thomas and/or Sean, and various other interesting-sounding characters (including a guy playing The Dove). Notably missing from the list is Beast, unless they’re calling him by name. Very much looking forward to seeing Emilie de Ravine again, and seeing whether Belle ends up sounding Australian, French, English, or American. (Lost-related tangent warning: I wonder if Belle will have a child, and if Rumpelstiltskin will take this child, and if Claire Belle will end up screaming “my baby!”)

Jane Espenson wrote this episode. She also wrote “That Still Small Voice” and “Desperate Souls,” as well as the as-yet-unlisted episode 15. Espenson’s writing history is varied, though her production filmography is perhaps more impressive. She’s worked as a consulting producer on most of Once as well.

As Valentine’s Day arrive [sic], Mary Margaret plans a night out with Ruby and Ashley. Meanwhile, Belle makes a deal and Gold plans vengeance on the thief who robbed him.

From the description, this episode could be either really good or really annoying. Could be both, with two shorelines happening.

February 19: “Whatever Happened to Frederick”

We’ll see Granny, Red and/or Ruby, and both Abigail and Kathryn, however additional info on this episode is still a bit limited.

David tells Kathryn about his true feelings. In the fairytale world, Prince Charming offers to help Abigail while looking for Snow.

Nice to see that we don’t have to wait very long to continue moving along the story of Snow White/Mary Margaret and James/David, one of the primary stories of the series. The episode description doesn’t provide many clues as to the meaning of the title, so if you’re not excited to be revisiting our transdimensional love triangle, I expect this episode will have something more to offer as well.

Once Upon a Time Pod

Snow white is a huntress receiving food every month from Red Riding Hood. Red looks more dignified.

We still think Red looks a whole lot better in Fairytale Land than in Storybrooke.

The relationship of Snow and Red ties well with the story Snow White and Rose Red. And what was behind Snow White’s saying, “I helped you when no one else would.”

Snow White’s boat is not the same as the canoe in Mr. Gold’s shop.

Rumpelstiltskin can go poof!

No one goes to see Rumpelstiltskin without a deal in mind.

Why is Rumpelstiltskin so bitter against love?

What does Rumpelstiltskin need Snow’s hair for? Maybe for mixing in a future sleeping potion? Maybe an antidote for the new anti-love potion? Maybe a piece of a bigger plan? Maybe he carried it into Storybrooke so he can prove Emma’s identity? Maybe it gives him power over her.

From Aggie: Rumps’ laugh was really freaky… And I can’t figure out what he wants with her hair. Is it an antidote? Didn’t he say all spells can be broken? So maybe snow whites memory lost of Charming can be fixed. If not…how is James going to fix this and how long do you think it will take him to find her?

Magic can’t make people fall in love. Nice to see some limits to magic. These limits remind us of the genie’s power.

James is more concerned for the prosperity of the kingdom than of his own wealth.

That’s a carrier pigeon, not a dove! Or are we wrong? But the dove is a symbolism of peace

Is that cabin Snow White’s home?

This looks like the same dungeon as the mines where Rumpelstiltskin is later kept.

Was Grumpy’s reference of a lot of dwarf blood going into Rumpelstiltskin’s prison a reference to Stealthy’s death?

The seven dwarfs’ names as we know them were invented by Disney for Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs.

Grumpy fell in love while he was a diamond-mind (another reference to Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs).

Snow disguises to get into the castle but is captured, just missing James, meets Grumpy

Again with the flammable stuff next to the castle!

King George is bitter against love! “Love is a disease”

Maybe James or King George use the original prince James’s body to say that James was assassinated, and thus still seal the merger of the kingdoms.

Same castle room for James as for Thomas and Cinderella. Probably just a prop oversight.

When the dwarfs find Snow White to take her home is also when the Evil Queen was watching through her magic mirror (S01E09 “True North”) and said, “She’s cavorting with dwarfs now? When did that happen?” Aggie also caught this: “I love that because it shows that this fairytale world isn’t ‘flat’ things can happen simultaneously.

We know that Snow White and James will still get together, but we just don’t know how, yet. We still have yet to see how the poisoned apple comes into play.

Storybrooke

It was a dark and stormy day … “storm’s coming.”

The stranger’s license plate is “NR 23″ and looks like it says Kansas.

The stranger wears some necklaces. Anything significant?

He’s here for a purpose and the typewriter will help him accomplish that purpose. Here are some theories on his identity:

• The writer of Henry’s storybook
• Rumpelstiltskin’s son
• The boy who found Emma on the side of the road
• The Wizard of Oz [via The Secrets of Once Upon a Time]
• Symbolic replacement of Graham
• The thing Evil Queen loved most that was taken from her

Regina says there’s something familiar about the stranger.

“The apes haven’t taken over.” Reminds us of Planet of the Apes.

From StarryDreamer: Someone over at TelevisionWithoutPity message boards commented that Mary Margaret was reading “The Mysterious Island” and suggested that perhaps Storybrooke is like The Mysterious Island, which could mean in the long run that Dr. Whale could be Cap. Ahab.

Mary was buying batteries, a flashlight, and an Apollo chocolate bar. Funny, she gets a HUGE Apollo bar because she’s love sick.

Regina is buying Fantastic Four issue 263 for Henry at the convenience store. Sneezy is in the background.

The “dove” represents Mary Margaret’s loneliness, but it’s not the same bird as what James sent from the castle.

What happened to the trees? Did the revine just show up? Maybe the edge of Storybrooke.

David and Mary Margaret find a cabin for shelter. Same cabin as in Fairytale Land. Snow White’s cabin?

The stranger is almost creepy; he didn’t even turn around when Emma started talking to him.

Hi all,

I haven’t been listening for long, but I enjoy  the podcast and have to say that it is making me a more observant viewer.

I was thinking over Rumpelstiltskin and the fees he charges the other characters for his services.  I am curious if maybe these odd fees have something to do with a magic spell that might free him from his curse.

I’m trying to remember all of the things he required of people (forgive me if I make a mistake or leave anything out):

• Emma’s name
• Cinderella’s baby (-later given up in exchange for the special favor from Emma)
• Snow White’s strand of hair
• The power over the Queen (Regina) every time he says “please”

All of these things are special pieces, personal items, of each person and it seems like there’s a deeper meaning behind why he needs them.  Or, is he seeking to have his own curse or power over these characters?  What do you all think?

"Bet you weren't expecting THIS!"

In the past we’ve seen Evil Queen view others through mirrors: one mirror on her side and another on the side of the person being viewed. In “True North,” Evil Queen used this power to see into Blind Witch’s house, where we observed something new: the Queen sent fire through the mirrors. Brilliant! But at what cost to the story’s logic?

This question becomes more relevant later when the Queen views Snow White with the seven dwarves through a mirror. “Now she’s cavorting with dwarves? When did that happen?” Again, brilliant! (At least it was brilliant to those who had been trying to place Snow’s time with the dwarves in the Fairytale timeline and asking “When did that happen?”) However, since we presume that there wasn’t a mirror in the middle of the road in the middle of the forest, this would seem to indicate that the second mirror isn’t required and the Queen can see whatever she wants. This is fine, and something I believe she could do in other versions of the story, but that combined with the demise of Blind Witch begs the question: why not melt Snow White (see what I did there?) right there in the forest, and maybe take out a few dwarves for good measure?

"I don't think I have to worry about that whole 'fairest in the land' thing at the moment."

And yes, I know it’s just a story, and a story involving fairytales at that. However, in order for a story to be enjoyable the author must suspend the audience’s disbelief. Magic so powerful that all limitations should, logically, be removed threatens that suspension of disbelief by raising too many “Why didn’t she just …?” questions. Sci-fi also tends to suffer from these problems once too many new technologies and creative solutions to problems have been introduced.

Certain dampers on the Queen’s use of refractive magic could be written into future episodes, such as requiring a second mirror for the flame trick or a scene in which Snow notices a random mirror in the middle of the forest and worries that she doesn’t look like the jewelry type that Evil Queen may have seen them. Even without any of those repairs to storyline logic it may simply be that the Queen was still afraid of killing Snow in a way that would indicate her involvement to the people of the kingdom, or that it wouldn’t have given her the flavor of revenge she desired.

The Evil Queen has a strange hobby: she collects hearts. As I thought about this, it made me wonder. Could it be that she herself has no heart?

There’s a whole history there that we have yet to discover about the Evil Queen. We’ve witnessed in Fairytale Land that each character has their own history; even Rumplestiltskin didn’t always possess the power to wield magic. He was once known as a coward and a mere peasant, spinner, and wool tradesman. His beguiling nature had a beginning.

Maybe the evil queen wasn’t always evil, either. She has mentioned how Snow White took away something that was very dear to her, and she sometimes refers to that thing as a “he.” Perhaps this “he” was Snow’s father and the queen invested her heart in him so much that after he died (of course we know she killed him after an incident that involved Snow’s revealing a secret), she removed it from herself, never to feel that way for anyone again, and is now rendered heartless. Thus beginning the cruel hobby of collecting hearts.

Or she could’ve just married Snow White’s father to gain the throne, which blows a huge hole in my entire previous theory. Until we find out more about this thing or person that the evil queen once loved, we’ll never know how she came to be so calloused and wicked.

We would call “True North” a functional episode that gave us another story, but also further built the overall story. It’s too bad we didn’t see more time in the Blind Witch’s house.

There was no recap in the introduction for this episode. Did they run out of time, or are the short recaps no longer necessary? This title screen was the most obvious what the story would be about.

The epitome of this entire episode is this: Two kids searching for their father.

Fairytale Land

The compass is special. “A family always needs to be able to find one another.”

The prize for Silliest Line of the Night belongs to the Woodcutter, who let loose this gem: “A fine specimen! The wood it provides will keep our family’s hearth warm this winter.” Thank you, good sir, for explaining how wood works. [Entertainment Weekly via @_obisgirl]

Bad dialog is backed by a strong performance. Good actors. Bad lines.

Did the evil queen put the father of Hansel and Gretel in her carriage when she took him? She walks the kids to the blind witch. She could’ve given them a ride there.

Was the Evil Queen’s hair not two colors?

Did the curse only create the town of Storybrook, and the Queen use her power to magically trasport/send everyone to it?

Does Regina still have her powers (teleportation in black smoke and controlling trees and vines) in Storybrook?

Gretel’s white stone she slung at the “black rider” connected well with the Grimms version of the fairytale.

Did the blind witch steal the apple from Regina?

Easter egg: Cookies on the wall of the blind witch’s house appear again in Storybrook.

Dan read an excerpt for us from Grimm’s Fairy Tales version.

The evil queen can send fire through the magic mirror.

The evil queen is holding the apple and watching Snow White through the mirror when she’s “cavorting with dwarves.”

The Evil Queen got the sleeping potion from Meleficent. Maybe there was only enough of it to put the curse on one apple and that’s why another could not be made.

The Evil Queen invites the children to live with her, veins “popping out” in her effort to be nice.

Does the queen only collect strong hearts in an effort to become more powerful?

Listener feedback: Is there a village in the woods on the right hand side where Hansel and Gretel find themselves? Could that be Storybrook?

Did the Evil Queen capture Hansel and Gretel’s father because she planned to use them to retrieve her apple from the blind witch, or was that only her plan after she saw that they were brave?

The Evil Queen genuinely wanted to know why the kids refused her for the uncertain future with their father. She seemed on the verge of tears.

Storybrooke

Look at these comic books that Henry was looking at in the convenience store. Are the issue dates relevant to the timeline?

Fantastic Four issues #266 and #268 (pictured above) were released in May and July, 1984, respectively. Kazar the Savage premiered in 1981.

We met Sneezy, also known as Mr. Clark!

Is Emma subject to the time in Storybrook?

People’s names in Storybrook have a relation to who they were and what they did in fairy tale land.

Regina doesn’t know her own son—”My son doesn’t eat candy.” He had Apollo Bars in his backpack in the episode when he got trapped in the mine with Archie.

Do you think Henry looked at Nicholas weird when he met him?

Regina uses words like “miscreants” and “fear not.” Does this confirm that the curse had no effect on her?

Regina tells Emma, “You shouldn’t make promises that you can’t keep,” yet she doesn’t keep her own promises. Regina is unconcerned with integrity.

What’s with Boston? Emma lived there, Ruby wanted to go there, and Ava and Nicholas are going to be sent there by Regina.

Emma’s necklace is a swan medallion.

Who is Mr. Krzyszkowski? Could he be the Genie since he told Emma to fill out three request forms? Could Mr. Gold’s polishing the lamp be a clue for this?

Why did Emma lie about the kind of person Henry’s father is?

Mr. Gold doesn’t let on about how much history he’s aware of in both Storybrook and fairy tale land. Evidenced by the fact that the card is blank. He knows much more than he’s letting on.

Why is Mr. Gold helping Emma help others to find their happy endings in Storybrook?

Are the objects in Storybrook from fairy tale land magic, or are they just connections to memories for those they belonged to (for example, Emma’s blanket, the compass, etc.)?

Did Emma stall her car on purpose, or did it stall because of the “bad things” that happen when people in Storybrook try to leave.

Who is the stranger on the motorcycle? What was his motivation for being so mysterious? Where did he come from?

Two theories: the stranger could be Rumplestiltskin’s son, or he could be the 7-year-old who found Emma as a baby on the side of the freeway (as mentioned in the newspaper during the episode when Emma was elected sheriff).

Can Regina give people the power to come and go from Storybrook?

Lost easter eggs

Henry was reading issue 3 of the Ultimate Wolverine vs. Hulk comic book, written by Lost producer Damon Lindelof.

Stranger’s license plate number is 23.

Kids end up in the forest lying on the ground, like the plane crash in Lost.

Watch this and pay close attention to what Robert says at 1:40.

Our show takes place in two different realities. We have fantasy/fairytale land and then we have the real world.

I play Rumpelstiltskin in the fairytale land. … And in the real world, I play a character called Mr. Gold. And Mr. Gold is probably very closely related to Rumpelstiltskin. He doesn’t know that he was Rumpelstiltskin, but he was. As well as everyone else in Storybrooke, they are all the fairytale characters that you see in the fairytale part of the show. [Emphasis added]

While this is from before the show even started, it does lend great support to the idea that Mr. Gold doesn’t know his real past.

So why is Mr. Gold doing the things he is? Perhaps he truly doesn’t know his history, but he knows something isn’t right. And in some way, he’s conscious of the curse and his partial power within it.

Storybrooke, Maine—The race for the position of local sheriff has just gone into overdrive. The Storybrooke Daily Mirror has recently come into possession of a number of controversial documents that purport to shed an entirely new light onto the character of Storybrooke’s prospective new law enforcement official, Emma Swan.

Records show that when she was merely a girl of seventeen, Emma Swan found herself, ironically, on the wrong side of the law. She was visiting friends of her foster parents in the town of Worcester, Massachusetts, it would prove to be a trip that would earn her a juvenile criminal record.

On the evening of June 16th, 1996, Swan—

This reveals a few very important things.

• We know that Emma was 17 on June 16, 1996.
• Henry was born sometime after that, after Emma turned 18 but before she was released from jail.
• Emma committed some crime on June 16, 1996 and in Massachusetts.

But here’s the big unknown: what did Emma do that landed her in jail and was later sealed?

In the upper-right, we see some kind of certificate that reads, “GRAHAM HUMBERT: Storybrooke County Sheriff.”

HUMBERT? His last name was Humbert?

Another interesting find in this photo is the newspaper clipping that calls Graham “compassionate.” A nice tie-in with his compassionate huntsman background (from “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter“).

There’s also some interesting memorabilia, including some baseball stuff. Does anything stick out to you?

Hey guys! According to the Disney Wiki that was exactly the huntsman’s name in the original Disney version of Snow White – Humbert the Huntsman.

Now it makes perfect sense why we hadn’t heard Sheriff Graham’s name before “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.” Thanks, Claudia!

Fairytale Land

Consider the Once Upon a Time timeline, this must have taken place 50–70 years or more before the curse.

Rumpelstiltskin started as a normal human. Will other characters—like the Big Bad Wolf, three little pigs, pongo, and others—also start our in fairytale land as humans? We’ve also seen Jiminy Cricket start as a human.

Little Red Riding Hood looks prettiest with more clothes on.

The opening recap is different in this episode. This time, it takes clips from the last seven episodes, so it helps introduce more of the story.

“Only one knows the truth and she’ll stop at nothing until someone breaks her spell.”

What will happen once The Evil Queen’s spell is stopped?

The title screen shows The Dark One.

We meet Rumpelstiltskin while he’s spinning wool.

This is even longer before Jiminy comes to Rumpelstiltskin in “That Still Small Voice.”

Rumpelstiltskin started kind of good, albeit cowardly. Later, the power consumed him.

The Dark One is played by Brad Dourif who also played Wormtongue from Lord of the Rings.

The distant sky is red from the Orge Wars. Will we learn more about this? Is this war where Rumpelstiltskin got the limp-causing injury?

Robert Carlyle played Rumpelstiltskin in four amazing personalities:

1. Cowardly Rumpelstiltskin
2. Newly empowered Rumpelstiltskin
3. Powerful and confident Rumpelstiltskin
4. Confident and cunning Mr. Gold

At first, we thought of Robin Hood when seeing the old beggar in the forest, but we were later proven wrong.

ABC is pulling from multiple sources for their tellings of these tales: Grimm fairy tales, the traditional Once Upon a Time stories, and even Disney’s movies (Disney owns ABC).

Do the soldiers have a calendar of everyone’s fourteenth birthday? Perhaps the Dark One knows. We know Rumpelstiltskin can see the future (Pilot) and maybe the Dark One could, too.

Is Rumpelstiltskin’s wife really dead, or was he lying again? Perhaps Rumpelstiltskin even killed or somehow caused the death of his wife.

The commanding soldier had Rumpelstiltskin kiss his boot to release him from the penalty of using the king’s road.

The beggar offered to be Rumpelstiltskin’s benefactor, just like Mr. Gold offered to be Emma’s benefactor. Then the beggar shares a plan to kill the Dark One and reminds Rumpelstiltskin that he has a choice—everyone has a choice. The is just like what Rumpelstiltskin said to Shepherd James in “The Shepherd.”

Rumpelstiltskin’s son, Baelfire, was willing to obey the law and go to war, but his cowardly father wouldn’t allow it.

Might Rumpelstiltskin have acquired the wand (in “The Cost of Gold”) to try to free himself from his own curse?

How did the duke get control of Zoso’s dagger? Might this be the origin of having power over someone by knowing their name?

Might the dagger be in Mr. Gold’s shop, or maybe buried in the woods (“The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter”).

Check out the flags on the duke’s castle. They’re the same emblems as Prince Charming’s castle later (James probably wasn’t even born yet).

Although the castles aren’t structured the same. Former castle, maybe?

The dagger was in a room with some interesting flags.

It seems that Rumpelstiltskin’s new power causes him to lose his firstborn. Could that be why Rumpelstiltskin is after Cinderella/Ashley Boyd’s firstborn?

“Magic always comes with a price. Now it’s yours to pay. … I can always recognize a desperate soul.”

Storybrooke

Mr. Gold wants Emma to be Sheriff so that she is more capable of giving him the favor she owes him (“The Cost of Gold”).

Is the big guy in the blue suit the ogre from The Evil Queen’s group that helped enact the curse?

Mr. Gold had a spindle in the back room of his shop, but it’s not the same one from Fairytale Land.

Mr. Gold showed some deep emotions when he gave the walkies to Emma for Henry. Maybe he saw his son die in Fairytale Land?

Will we someday see the Evil Queen’s origin?

Dr. Hopper tried to make a joke before the debate, but it fell flat and he said, “Wow. Crickets.”

Sydney Glass was really happy looking at himself in the mirror. The world “reflection” is used several times in describing Sydney Glass.

The sheriff’s autopsy revealed that he died “of natural causes.” Maybe “lack of heart”?

An interesting story written by Sydney Glass in the newspaper reveals a little information about Emma’s juvenile criminal record.

The Storybrooke Daily Mirror has recently come into possession of a number of controversial documents that purport to shed an entirely new light onto the character of Storybrooke’s prospective new law enforcement official, Emma Swan.

records show that when she was merely a girl of seventeen, Emma Swan found herself, ironically, on the wrong side of the law. She was visiting friends of her foster parents in the town of Worcester, Massachusetts, it would prove to be a trip that would earn her a juvenile criminal record.

On the evening of June 16th, 1996, Swan—

Emma wants “to show him [Henry] that a hero can win. And if I’m not a hero and I’m not the savior, then what part do I have in his life?”

Dr. Hopper reminded everyone to “vote your conscience.”

Emma first went for floral abuse, now she’s assaulting a toaster. The song playing in the background was “Kool Thing” from Sonic Youth’s album Goo.

Will we someday see Storybrooke being created immediately after the curse is enacted?

The phrase, “as long as we/anyone/I can remember” was used several times in this and past episodes.

The Graham’s last name was Humbert? He was also called “compassionate” in a newspaper clipping from the box that Mr. Gold had.

David is now working at the animal shelter, funny considering that he was a Shepherd in Fairytale Land.

After watching last night’s episode, I have a new theory concerning Rumpelstiltskin. Before the dark lord died he mentioned that his life was such a burden and that Rumpelstiltskin will see what he means as he now has the power. In previous episodes to this we’ve seen Rumpelstiltskin acquiring more power such as the Fairy Godmother’s wand. Maybe he’s trying to find a cure from this new burden he has acquired. It could even be what Mr. Gold was looking for in episode seven “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter.” Can’t wait to hear what you guys think.

4. The Queen having an obsession with hearts is a brilliant nod to the original Grimm story, because once the Huntsman brings her the heart, she actually cooks it and eats it in the hope she can steal Snow White’s beauty…..loved the Temple of Doom reference by the way

Love your show.

A few notes as I make my way through your episodes:

- you mentioned that “still small voice” seemed to replace god with Jiminy. In Catholicism (not sure if this is only for Catholicism or it’s a Christian tradition) it is believed that your conscience is the voice of god. So the still small voice you hear in the back of your mind is god’s. I’m okay with it being the cricket’s voice because technically it is [supposed to] be of the “voices” you hear in the silence.

- I have a running theory that Thomas (Ella’s prince) turned in to the frog prince which is why his clothes were left behind at the well. It would also account for Shawn being human in Storybrooke, since some human/animals like Jiminy turned human in Storybrooke.

The Price of Gold

Did anyone see a potential Aladdin and Jasmin at the wedding reception?

Also, when Cinderella told Thomas about the baby she did mention “It wasn’t my fairy-godmother who brought me here it was Rumpelstiltskin.” So he knew it was magic that’s why he didn’t get too upset?

Also, if Rumpelstiltskin gave the queen the spell he must have gotten something from her as well right?

You confused me completely with this timeline thing and I agree with Jenny that not everyone was happy at the same time so maybe everyone got to Storybrooke at different time? On Ashley’s pregnant time line, lets not forget that Emma had Henry when she was 18.

Did you notice that Regina only talked about the not so fun things about having a baby? Change diaper, fevers, tantrum.

It’s funny how Henry says, so what’s her story, and later he’s like maid, step mother, step sister… and Emma is like not now Henry!

What did Ashley take from Mr. Gold? I can not figure it out, it did not look like paper.

Hope this isn’t too long. Can’t wait to hear your response.

We never see Ashley reach into the safe. But it does sound like she picks up a glass object, like a bottle.

I have a theory that the Evil Queen is the original miller’s daughter who had to weave straw into gold, and then later married the king (Snow’s father). Maybe she bargained away her first born to Rumps and that was the secret she shared with Snow. Think about it—why did she even want to adopt Henry? (she had the sheriff to amuse herself with) Maybe her loved one was actually a child. The dialogue is very careful to allude to something, but it also leaves the door open for something entirely different.

If you stay with my original theory about the Evil Queen being the miller’s daughter and that she had to give up her first born to Rumpelstiltskin…

Suppose that child is actually Henry’s father… It seems twisted but it would be clever and would certainly plug all of the plot holes (so far).

Interesting theory, but we can’t see the same connections. If Rumpelstiltskin was weaving gold in “The Still Small Voice” for the miller’s daughter, the age wouldn’t align with how old the Evil Queen is 30–50 years later (according to Gippetto’s apparent age).

If true love follows the ring that Marry Margret is wearing, is that one of the reasons David is drawn to her?

I believe that both Mr. Gold and Regina know who they are from the past. Mr. Gold only does things that will benefit him.

Regina can see that her “power” over her townspeople is diminishing the longer Emma stays and the more important Emma becomes in the town.

Question: In “The Still Small Voice,” Regina picks up a piece of glass and keeps it with her until the end of the episode where she then tosses it down the sewer. What was the piece of glass from?

What if Mr. Gold was digging Graham’s grave in the woods.

The glass was from Snow White’s glass coffin, which is apparently buried deep under Storybrooke, but Henry still has a piece of it.

Sheriff Graham died in the city and will probably have an official funeral. We think Mr. Gold may have been digging for pieces from fairytale land.

Hey Podcasters,

I’ve just recently found your show and have been listening to the episodes while at work to pass the time. I had a theory about Midas and possibly why Shepherd(Prince) James didn’t marry his daughter. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s version of the story, King Midas accidentally touches his daughter and turns her into gold. Maybe this is what happens in the show, therefore allowing SP James to marry Snow.

Also in episode 4 “The Price of Gold”, one of you mentioned that Cinderella had her baby in the fairy world before they captured Rumpelstiltskin, I disagree. Had the baby been born already I don’t think Rumpelstiltskin would have been waiting around for Cinderella to hand deliver it, he would have appeared to collect it already. I was under the assumption that Cinderella and her Prince were trying to break the deal before the baby came. Cinderella did inform the Prince of the deal she’d made right after telling him that she was pregnant after all.

On that note, I think a timeline is a great idea and I will be happy to help you guys if you want; I’ve already started a slightly loose one of my own.

It’s a good idea, but Katherine is alive in Storybrooke, so she could not have died before the curse was enacted. We also saw the evil gnome turned into stone in fairytale land and he was still stone in Storybrooke.

I absolutely LOVE this show! I was a little disappointed when it went off for a little while during the holidays. But with that said, I can’t wait until it comes back on Sunday! I just wish it played every day instead of waiting a whole week! But I guess that keeps the interests up!

Entertainment Weekly lists Sheriff Graham’s death as #9 in the “Best TV Deaths of 2011.”

Once Upon a Time‘s seventh episode focused almost entirely on a heretofore sideline character: the Irish-for-some-reason hipster lawman, Sheriff Graham. We learned about Graham’s secret past as the Huntsman; we saw him search for his heart; we saw him kiss Emma. And then he died, an unsuspecting victim of Evil Queen Regina. The episode was written by Once co-creators Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz, who came from Lost — a show that became famous for deploying the Episode That Makes a Character Seem Awesome Right Before We Kill Them death twist.

I certainly found Sheriff Graham’s death shocking and almost tear-jearking. What did you think of it?

The evil queen’s spaceship-like palace started out white and then shed changed it to black.

True to Dan’s prediction from the Grimm fairytales, Snow White is the Evil Queen’s step-daughter.

The huntsman was chosen because he doesn’t believe humans have honor and he would have no problem cutting out a heart.

What is the big secret that the Evil Queen shared with Snow White? How did Snow White’s sharing it cost the queen dearly?

Could this season be focusing more on Snow White vs. the Evil Queen? Will we learn this season what the secret was?

The Evil Queen can see through any mirror, and in Storybrooke, she said that she has “eyes everywhere.”

What kind of help does the huntsman’s whistle bring? Would her using it lead it to safety with the seven dwarfs?

At which point did Snow White get to know the woods so well? When does she meet the seven dwarfs? Before or after meeting Prince Charming?

It looks like the Evil Queen has more than the inner walls of hearts (or whatever is stored in those drawers).

Is the queen trying to put Snow White’s heart in storage, or is she using it as a key to open something?

Daniel is convinced that she wanted Snow White’s heart as a key because Mary Margaret wore a key on her necklace in Storybrooke in part of “The Shepherd”.

Sheriff Graham doesn’t “feel anything” with Regina. Henry later told him that the Evil Queen rips out people’s hearts so they can’t feel anything. “It’s kind of her thing.”

Henry finally has someone who totally believes him when Sheriff Graham comes to hear his story.

Is Regina using mirrors to see everywhere in town? We’ve noticed her say things about seeing or knowing everything in town before.

We all thought it was the same James (“Prince Charming”) in the opening scene, but the spear through his chest gave us pause.

We met King Midas (from Greek mythology) for the first time. “Be careful. Remember what happened to Frederick.”

Rumpelstiltskin made a deal to bring James’s brother if he could have the whereabouts of a fairy godmother with a wand (that was saw in The Price of Gold).

Mary Margaret uses a gold-colored, sword-shaped letter opener right after seeing James slaw the dragon in fairytale world.

Henry logically explains David’s immunity to the curse.

David is doing the right thing getting back with Katherine—but it’s still a false reality.

Katherine feels like she has a friendship with Regina, Regina looks either touched or guilty.

Sheriff Graham works at an animal shelter and they need him to feed the dogs? Perhaps a hint at his identity.

We see more interesting things in Mr. Gold’s Pawn Shop, including a genie lamp again.

Was David hypnotized by the windmill? By the way, we’ve seen it in Mr. Gold’s pawn shop before.

Alan Dale played James’s father and also played Mr. Widmore in Lost.

The clock in the diner was at 8:23 when Regina is talking to Mary Margaret.

Recap

Young Jiminy lives a life of thievery but his conscious yearns for him to escape and do the right thing. His effort brings terrible consequences to an innocent family and Jiminy wishes to be a cricket so he can be a guide to the now orphaned Geppetto.

Regina looks into a mirror and finds some kind of comfort.

Regina has apples and apple cider (“the best apple cider you’ve ever tasted”) in her home.

Does Regina know who she is? Does she remember their real past? Perhaps people are pushing out some imaginations of their memories.

“The only happy ending will be my happy ending.” Storybrooke is Regina’s happy ending?

How did Henry come to be in Storybrooke with Regina if Emma lived far away.

Mary Margaret said, “You’re building a home, not a cage.” Could this be her approach to life in Storybrooke, even though she doesn’t know that she’s in a cage?

Is Mary Margaret’s necklace a sword or a cross?

Mary Margaret’s last name, Blanchard, means “white” in French. Regina means “queen” in Italian.

Daniel made quite an amazing connection between Regina’s last name, Hills, with the a queen who stands on sevel hills mentioned in the Biblical book of Revelation. But then he realized her last name is Mills, not Hills.

Some of the other characters we saw: Jiminy Cricket, Gippetto, Pinocchio, and Little Red Riding Hood.

Prince Charming and Snow White sent Emma away to give her her best chance. Emma gave Henry away to give him his best chance.

Henry had a light carousel that has a swan on it.

Who is Sheriff Graham?

Lost easter eggs

Mayor’s street address is 108 (key number from Lost).

The clock tower changes from 8:15 to 8:16. Both are part of the Lost numbers (4, 8, 15, 16, 23, 42) as well as 815 being the flight number.

The actress playing Regina was also in Lost as Greta (episode near the end of season three).

Emma Swan connects to the Swan Station from Lost.

Black smoke was part of the curse, maybe also a Lost easter egg?

The story-telling mechanism of Once Upon a Time are similar to the flashbacks from Lost.

What could be ahead?

Emma has decided to stay. What kind of “final battle” will we see?

Rumpelstiltskin knows Emma’s name. Does that mean he has power over her?

We’ll probably see bad things happen when people try to leave Storybrooke.

Sheriff Graham gives off a “wolf impression.” Could this a hint at his character?

What if Emma’s success will bring everyone back to Fairytale world to fight a battle there?
