The mimicking use of camera angles was genius and so very telling. What stood out the most to me, was the message that history truly does repeat itself;  especially with an Evil Queen pulling at its strings.

This made me think, if Snow needed Charming (true loves kiss) to wake her up from the poison of the apple, what could wake up Henry?

He is 10 so True Love might be out of question but maybe true love doesn’t have to only romantic. Could this mean that the pure motherly  love of Emma or Regina could be his cure?

Who else can’t wait for the answers to this and a million other questions?

Jeremy pointed out that Snow White is a bit taller than the dwarves in the title screen image than she seems to be in actual Fairy Tale Land.

Daniel noticed a dragon theme on the helmets of King George’s guards, hinting again at the George and the Dragon legends.

There’s a hint of friendliness between Regina and King George. When did that start? King George called her by name when she showed up at James’s execution. He didn’t react to her as if they were strangers. Just how close are they?

Jenny noted that Grumpy enlists the help of the Blue Fairy as “air support” saying she “owes me a favor.” He is referring to the time he did as the Blue Fairy requested (in “Dreamy”) and chose not to run away with Nova.

Could fairy dust have a different outcome of using it determined by the wielder? This is the first episode in which we’ve see fairy dust being used as a weapon.

Is Maleficent the bad fairy that gave Snow White the bad fairy dust? Snow planned to use it on Regina. This makes it likely that she could’ve gotten it from Maleficent because of what Regina did to Maleficent’s pet unicorn in order to obtain the dark curse.

Why did Grumpy have to tug his pickaxe from the guard’s body? It’s sharp enough to cut through diamond! Diamond-cutting pickax fail!

Jeremy wondered how Red puts her cloak back on when she’s a wolf.

Does Red need the full moon in order to turn into a wolf, or can she turn into a wolf anytime? Did Snow have to plan on waiting for “wolf’s time” in order to have Red’s help?

Daniel acknowledges the similarities of every dungeon we’ve seen in Fairy Tale Land. Their only differences are the bars and doors.

How did James feel something at the exact moment Snow ate the apple? Do they have a magical connection?

Daniel pointed out that Regina was wearing the ring Daniel, the stable boy, gave her in the episode called “The Stable Boy” and quickly yanked it off her finger to hide it when Snow showed up to meet her there.

Is Regina’s apple tree magic in some way? Dan pointed out that it is among the few things she brought with her from Fairy Tale Land. Why would she see it’s dying as evidence that the curse is weakening?

Why does Regina seem to know so little about the curse?

Dear Once Podcast,

In “Apple Red as Blood,” we learned that Regina believes Mr. Gold has designed the curse so that it can only be broken if Emma dies. My theory is that Mr. Gold is simply lying to Regina in order to preserve Emma’s life. Mr. Gold wouldn’t risk telling Regina how to really break the curse. He wants to have the upper hand over Regina. If the way to break the curse were really to kill Emma, then Mr. Gold could easily have killed her through his dubious methods. We’ve already seen Rumpelstiltskin kill others without a second thought.

Mr. Gold said to Regina that Emma would have to die for the curse to be broken, but what if he is just saying that to prevent Regina from killing Emma? It could be that Mr. Gold wants Emma’s life to be preserved and the only way to insure Regina doesn’t kill Emma is to make Regina believe that the curse is tied to Emma’s life. As long as Emma lives, the dark curse continues and Regina keeps her power. That would be a very crafty lie indeed, and Mr. Gold is king of craftiness.

Also, when Regina told Mr. Gold that she’d use her sleeping curse on Emma, Mr. Gold had a look of real concern, not one of smugness like we’ve seen before. I think Mr. Gold needs Emma to be alive and well for the curse to be broken. We’ve already seen that her mere presence in Storybrooke is enough to weaken the curse. While I don’t have a fully formed idea of how the curse will be broken, I think that it will involve Emma not only believing but will also involve everyone else believing and defeating Regina. We’ve already seen that as the curse grows weaker, so do Regina’s apples in SB. The tree seems to be tied up with Regina’s power. Mr. Gold doesn’t seem intent on her dying, but rather he seems very intent on wanting Emma to believe.

So this week we saw Regina seek the help of Mr. Gold to find a way of getting rid of Emma and there was that one moment where Gold said she had nothing left to bargain with him. Regina could have brought up Belle, and I think many of us thought she would, but she didn’t. I think Regina wants to hold her information about Belle to herself until it is a life or death situation, therefore I think Regina is going to reveal that Belle is alive in the upcoming episode when trying to enlist the help of Mr. Gold to help cure Henry. She didn’t tell Gold in this episode because she was only metaphorically “losing Henry”, but now she actually is losing him so she’s going to use her leverage to enlist help.

Dan wondered that when this happens if Gold will refuse Bell because he created the curse to find his son, vowing to do and love nothing else.

hello everyone! the past few episodes including the most recent has shown that for some unknown reason Mr. Gold wants the curse broken. we don’t know what happens exactly when the curse is broken but i never assumed it meant going back to fairy tale land. i believe that with Emma breaking the curse it may mean that the people of Storybrooke may be able to leave Storybrooke which may explain why Mr. Gold wants the curse broken. Rumple still mourns the loss of his son and finding Bae was the reason for creating the curse in the first place. now that the curse is enacted and Rumple is in our world he needs emma to break it so that he may leave and find Baelfire thus achieving his “happy ending.” just my thoughts. thanks for the awesome podcast!

Mr Gold hasn’t found Baelfire and he wants the curse broken to go on a “trip”; leave Storybrook to go find Balfire? Which also means I don’t think he left Storybrook to go get Henry. But he HAD to bring Henry to Storybrook in order for the curse to be broken. But why oh why did he give Henry to Regina?!

Quick note: most recent episode: Mary Margaret was grilling Emma just like a mother would do.

We agree , Gold most likely brought Henry to Storybrooke in order to lure Emma there.

Jeremy thinks Mr. Gold may not have “woken up” from the curse and started pursuing his goal of finding his son until Emma showed up. This would make it an extreme coincidence that he chose Henry, of all children, to give to Regina.

Jeremy noticed that Mr. Gold’s shop was suddenly full of globes in this episode.

Hey guys, just wanted to run a possible theory past you about Jefferson. Originally, I thought he returned to Wonderland/Fairy Tale Land. However after tonight’s episode I think that maybe he just teleported to a different part of Storybrooke. That’s my latest and only theory at this time. Do you think Emma really made a magic hat? Where did Jefferson go? Why is he hiding the truth from Regina. Do you think he was confined to his only house until Emma came to Storybrooke?

How does Regina plan to make good on her deal with Jefferson (in exchange for his getting her the apple) to rewrite his and Grace’s stories together there in Storybrooke if there’s no magic? Has he been duped again?!

In the pilot episode, Regina got upset at Henry for ripping out the pages about Emma because she wanted to read them.

Why did Regina not try use Jefferson’s hat by herself?

Jenny noticed that Jefferson didn’t spin the hat this time. He just set it on the floor. Maybe he’s trying to deceive Regina.

Dan thinks Jefferson could lean towards good or evil at this point, but for now he seems to be a neutral character.

Fairy Tale Land

Daniel shares some thoughts from starting to reading The Adventures of Pinocchio (free ebook from Amazon.com!).

• “Mastro Geppetto” seems close to Geppetto’s name in Storybrooke: Marco
• The wood that Pinocchio came from was called a plain log
• Lots of talking marionettes and animals

When we first see Geppetto and Pinocchio, they’re battling a storm and trying to escape Monstro. Is this following the traditionally know story where this happens after Pleasure Island? This could also be the writers’ twist, especially since the end of the Pinocchio story isn’t in Henry’s book.

Maybe the “Pleasure Island” part was moved into modern day, when young August ran away with Gordie, and ended up in Phuket.

The Blue Fairy tells Pinocchio, “be brave, truthful, and unselfish.” This line comes straight from Disney’s Pinocchio.

Did wooden Pinocchio die? If so, how did the Blue Fairy make him into a real boy (living)? In Jenny’s words, “Maybe he got the magic knocked out of him.”

When the Blue Fairy comes to Geppetto’s home to ask for his help, it’s in the few months after the curse.

There are several tree stumps around the last enchanted tree. Perhaps former enchanted trees?

This is the last enchanted tree, which also reminds us of the last magic bean. Was the land running out of magic?

Geppetto still has a grudge against Jiminy, saying that Jiminy’s debt can never be fulfilled. But if a lifeless puppet Pinocchio could be brought to life as a real boy, is there chope for Geppetto’s parents? The Blue Fairy did already say that she couldn’t bring them back.

Was Geppetto selfish? “Big Red” doesn’t think so:

I have some thoughts to share regarding Gepetto and Pinocchio. Regarding Geppetto’s behavior in this episode: I happen to have a 7 year-old daughter and if we had a big, bad, curse to end all curses coming our way, I’d stuff her into the first magic tree stump I could find faster than you could say, “Bibbidi-bobbidi-boo”. All I’m saying is, I understand what he did. I get it. And I believe any parent would do the same. He was not being selfish. The truly selfish thing would have been to go into the magic wardrobe right after Pinocchio. And he didn’t. He understood the importance of saving the “savior.”

Would it have been better for Emma to have her mother with her? Absolutely! I’m sure it was a tough call to make. But like I said, I would have totally done it for my child. His actions are only a testament to how much he deeply loved Pinocchio.

Regarding Pinocchio’s actions as a child: My 7 year old would have done exactly the same thing. I’m not saying it was the right thing; it’s just the logical, natural thing for a 7 year old with wanderlust to do. I just think that in this episode the writers did a great job at showing what real, normal people would do, as unheroic as that would seem. That’s just my two cents worth.

We can agree to a point. Geppetto still chose to send his son through, rather than Emma’s own mother. Geppetto had even said, “Sometimes we need to lie to protect the people we love.”

The “kingdom council” scene in “The Stranger” does look like it was added and not originally planned.

This also reminds us of Snow’s statement to James in the pilot, “She tried to poison me with an apple because I was prettier than her.” But this could still play out that way.

What “final preparations” did the Blue Fairy need to make with the other fairies before the curse? Malchore sent an awesome theory that maybe the Blue Fairy wrote the storybrook and provides several great points.

• Witnessed everyone’s stories. From “Dreamy,” we learned that fairies see the world from a distance.
• Access (or maybe even teaching in) Henry’s school.
• The one person who knew about Geppetto’s secret deal.
• Had the magic and resources to pull this together before the curse.

We really like this theory and it makes sense! It could also explain why Pinocchio’s story was left out: to cover up that he went through the wardrobe first.

We don’t think the Blue Fairy can see the future. Even though she prevented Dreamy and Nova from getting together, it seemed to be more for Nova’s sake.

How did Mr. Gold figure out that August was Pinocchio? Probably the same way we have?

When Pinocchio and Emma came through the tree, magic rings emitted, similar to when Prince James kissed the sleeping Snow White.

When Pinocchio looks up, he sees an airplane with the Oceanic logo! Wonderful Lost easter egg.

Pinocchio seemed like he was going to climb back in the tree, but touching it made him remember, and threw him back. Would Emma know her purpose if she were to touch the tree?

Emma and Pinocchio go into foster care in Boston and have an ugly foster parent called Mr. Raskind and another kid named Gordie. None of these characters would be significant, because they’re modern-day characters, not from fairy tales.

Over Emma’s crib are two wooden pieces that have a crown and a castle.

Storybrooke

Why aren’t people doing something about Regina’s skeleton keys instead of just added more locks?

August wants Emma to see the big picture to give her the faith she needs. But we still see Emma act normally.

Henry discovered that the Pinocchio story was added, but not completed. But why was this story omitted in the first place?

August dials a three-digit number to call Mr. Gold from a rotary phone.

Mary Margaret is being the bigger person by forgiving Regina. But she goes further to well-describe the symptoms of the curse, just like Maleficent said in “The Thing You Love Most.”

Henry emphatically stated that “good will win,” which reminded us of the Pilot episode when Snow’s last words to the Evil Queen were, “good will always win.”

This must have inspired Regina to try seducing David. But he resisted! Obisgirl left a voicemail saying that she saw bad choices all around, except for David’s resisting Regina.

Is Emma flip-flopping, or has she ever believed? In “Hat Trick,” she completely faked her belief.

Mr. Gold probably arranged for Marco to be at Mr. Gold’s shop at just the right moment to put him in front of August.

There seemed to be a jester on the wine bottles in Regina’s house.

After unsuccessfully trying to seduce David, what will Regina’s next attack be?

August and Emma leave Storybrooke without anything bad happening! There’s some kind of sound when they cross  the border. But it doesn’t sound like the sound of their leaving, just something added for production sake.

The diner is Chantey’s Lobster House, near I-95.

August’s copy of the article is the same as Emma was looking at in “True North.”

August was in Phuket, like his modern Pleasure Island. This is also a Lost easter egg since Jack Shepherd went to Phuket for pleasure, too.

The hole is still in the tree where Pinocchio and Emma came through. What would’ve happened if Emma touched it?

Brad shared a prediction that the last scene of the first season will be of Emma ending up in Fairy Tale Land—past, present, or future.

Jeremy explained that Brad’s statement about “the snake in the mailbox” comes from a Lost codename for season finales.

When Baelfire came through the bean hole, did he show up 150 years before present day, or sometime near when Emma came, too? We’ve already seen time flow differently in one world (Wonderland).

Emma’s denial is so strong, that she can’t see truth. But considering who has told her things before, it’s easy for her to disbelieve. But even if she’s starting to question, she doesn’t want to be a part of breaking the curse.

Jed shared some thoughts that Kitsis, Horowitz, and other Once Upon a Time producers are listening to ONCE, because of how they showed us how the exit road works.

When August visited Marco, August gave the same advice on the clock that Geppetto had given him.

Dan shares research on “Judy,” which we saw on the boat outside Marco’s garage. There are some connections between “Judy” and other Pinocchio derivatives.

Daniel wanted to see August and Geppetto touch or remember in some way. But maybe Emma really is the only one who can help people remember because she’s the only one with magic.

I heard somewhere, possibly on your podcast that we should expect to lose a character and just this morning I thought of a potential heartbreaking possibility. Pinocchio appears to be fading fast – too fast to be saved since Emma is still not a believer. It seems the only way to shake her up a bit would be through his death – whether he turns to wood fully or not. Death surely leaves you stiff as a board! What might happen is that Geppetto will learn that Pinocchio is his son right before his death – probably during his last few breaths where they have time to share a quick goodbye. By then he will have at least had the opportunity to spend time with his son – even if he wasn’t aware it was him until his death.

Emma might come around once she hears from Geppetto that Pinocchio was his son etc. I don’t think she will see a wooden man – just that he is dead. After all, I think the message of faith is important – she will eventually have to have faith of the truth as in Christianity. She will never have concrete proof. Hopefully this would do it. Then again, we might have to suffer through the deaths of others until Emma gets the message.

Hey! This is Dream_Drop_Distance, and I have a theory about August/Pinocchio that I think has been thrown around a bit already. I think August wrote Henry’s storybook. He’s mentioned before that he’s a writer, and we now know that he is probably the only one, besides Regina and Rumple, that remembers his past life, and is also willing to share it. So, I think he wrote the book as a way for him to remember what has happened to him, and also because he hoped it would somehow find Emma. Shame on him for leaving her in the first place, but he was such a cute kid I couldn’t help but forgive him immediately! So, what are your thoughts on August being the writer?

I love my iPad; but so does my wife Jenny.

This is usually fine because she knows the iPad is primarily for my work, so she willingly stops playing with it when I need it.

“I didn’t draw dat parrot”

Then I discover that I’m a great artist in Draw Something, and it’s not me.

Whenever Jenny plas with my iPad, she’s playing under my account. Sure, I can log out of my GameCenter or Facebook account and let her login with hers. But this is not only inconvenient, but also a pain on iOS when using secure passwords.

The solutions is simple—user accounts

This has been a long-suspected feature for iOS on the iPad, but I think the need is only growing. Apple could also be trying to get more money by disallowing couples to share and instead get their own iPads. (I think this would be advised against by a licensed marriage counselor.)

How user accounts could work in iOS 6

User accounts in iOS 6 could be really simple. Unlock the iPad and the screen could be split into notifications for each account, or swiping the notification area could switch between each account’s notifications.

The default “slide to unlock” could unlock the most-recently used account, while there could be another, just as simple option, for unlocking to one of the other accounts.

This might just save your marriage.

Fairy Tale Land

First time we’ve seen a Storybrooke-only figure in the title screen. Daniel had been thinking there was a fairy tale character who rode a motorcycle, but Jeremy pointed out that it was Hagarid from Harry Potter.

Two things from Mr. Gold and Regina’s scene in the pawn shop carryover into Fairy Tale Land: Baelfire’s ball and the idea of turning someone into a snail and squashing them.

Mr. Gold might have the pawn shop to collect and carryover things that reminded him of his son.

Rumplestiltskin didn’t sound like the Rumplestiltskin we know. This is because the Blue Fairy said that his love for Baelfire is the only thing keeping Rumplestiltskin human.

Rumplestiltskin probably didn’t have the ability to spin straw into gold, yet.

August’s Fairy Tale Land character might have been linked to the maid. If not, how did August know about the dagger?

Yes, it’s the same Morrain as from “Desperate Souls.”

Reul Gorm is Scottish Gaelic for “star blue.” Or we understand that to be another name for “blue fairy,” who was also the wishing star in Pinnocchio.

Blue Fairy said there’s “good magic and dark magic,” and that she’s on the “good side.” She could see the darkness in Baelfire’s life.

Morrain described Reul Gorm as an ancient beast who ruled the night and was the “original power.” Could she be the Dark One’s mother, or maybe a dark one herself?

Blue Fairy said that they lost some of their magic beans. Maybe Nova’s fault? Or maybe some beans dropped at Jack’s house, resulting in Jack and the Beanstalk.

The magic bean created a portal to a world without magic. Jeremy noticed the sound seemed the same as when Jefferson activated his hat.

How long might Baelfire have been in the world without magic (we assume our world)?

If the fairies’ magic and Rumplestiltskin’s magic don’t mix well, then why did he want the wand from Cinderella’s fairy godmother (“The Price of Gold”)?

If Rumplestiltskin is reunited with his son, will he be even more powerful? Or will this be a “true love” necessary to break a curse?

Rumplestiltskin suggested four ways of trying to get to where Baelfire went. Blue Fairy denies the first three

1. realm-jumper (if Jefferson is a realm-jumper, this would mean his hat doesn’t reach Storybrooke),
2. time tunnel or time-turner,
3. a magic, or
4. a curse.

Did the dark curse actually destroy Fairy Tale Land? Regina said to Mr. Gold that he created the curse for her, and “built all this.” We think the “all this” just refers to Storybrooke, and the rest of our world has always existed.

Baelfire called his father a coward, confirming what Rumplestiltskin had been called before.

Might Storybrooke be a kind of time-space bubble where only fairy-tale characters and enter and even see it. This is reminiscent of Brigadoon, the island in Lost, and Narnia.

Now we know why Rumplestiltskin created the curse: to find a way back to Baelfire. Maybe this means that Regina isn’t really the villain to beat, but maybe Rumplestiltskin will be. Or perhaps breaking the curse will release other villains.

Rumplestiltskin accused the Blue Fairy of taking Baelfire. This seems to be why he hates nuns (or seem to have all been fairies).

Storybrooke

August has strange shakes when he wakes up. Probably because of his sickness, whatever it is.

Who was August calling? Popular theories are Baelfire, Henry, Mother Superior (Blue Fairy), or someone else. Jane Espenson answered in a tweet, but we still have a hard time believing it.

Does Mother Superior (Blue Fairy) know about the curse? We’re split on this.

August and Baelfire have different colored eyes.

August has blue eyes (The Return-s01e19). Settle down, ladies.

While August poking around Mr. Gold’s pawn shop we saw Jiminy’s magnifying glass.

There’s also this odd “Shine” box and a pink oil tin.

Henry probably chose the bell as a gift to help mask any sounds August might make in the back.

Are Sidney and Dr. Whale telling the truth about their lies about Kathryn’s supposed heart?

Why don’t we have Pinocchio, or do we?

When Regina realized that evidence leads back to her, she grabs her necklace, which definitely isn’t Daniel’s ring.

Mr. Gold invoked a please.

Emma also wore a necklace with a swan on it. We noticed this in “True North.”

Mary Margaret’s card from her school class said, “Congratulations. We’re so glad you didn’t kill Mrs. Nolan.” There were also several dwarfs at the party.

Mr. Gold knows about names. Maybe Rumplestiltskin hid his identity between Baelfire and the Miller’s Daughter incidents.

In August’s room, we couldn’t read the words on the paper, but we could clearly see the wooden donkey paper-weight.

The Nuns are at Sisters of Saint Meissa. This is Arabic for “white spot” or “shining.”

David and Mary Margaret are being separated by dark forces, and also don’t have true love. Consider a Biblical definite of love from the first book of Corinthians, chapter 13.

Love is patient, love is kind and is not jealous; love does not brag and is not arrogant, does not act unbecomingly; it does not seek its own, is not provoked, does not take into account a wrong suffered, does not rejoice in unrighteousness, but rejoices with the truth; bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things. [1 Corinthians 13:4–7, NASB]

Mr. Gold visits Dr. Hopper! We had heard this would be coming from PaleyFest.

August and Mr. Gold meet and talk. But the place Mr. Gold takes him to for the dagger, is different from where we saw Mr. Gold “gardening” in “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter.”

Gold also confirmed that there isn’t magic in Storybrooke. August was hoping Emma would recognize her power and heal him. If Emma has magic, could she also have the ability to summon the Dark One?

RiddleRaven pointed out that August is a liar! Dan thinks he noticed a sapling after hearing August’s lie. Perhaps a Pinocchio clue?

If August is Pinocchio, maybe his lying is killing him.

August said a “little fairy” told him about the knife. Who was this really? Mother Superior in Storybrooke, or a fairy back in Fairy Tale Land? But how recently is August from “over there”?

Mr. Gold wants August to keep trying to convince Emma, because Emma trusts August more than she trusts Mr. Gold.

Jenny points out the ship paintings at Dr. Hopper’s office. We’ve noticed these before, but hadn’t pointed them out.

We’re still sickened by Sydney’s blind obsession for Regina.

Emma and Regina are going to war for Henry. Jeremy suggests a great theory that Mr. Gold will get custody, along with being Henry’s grandfather if Baelfire is Henry’s father.

Obisgirl shares a theory that August is Baelfire’s son.

You’re in a mall, walking from store to store. You pull our your smartphone and faithfully checkin to each store, even though you’re just browsing.

After ten minutes, Foursquare tells you that you have no life and are visiting too many places. What do you do? Awkwardly stick around in a store until you can checkin? Move on but keep trying to checkin so you can still get the points? Checkin the next day?

What if you’re now too far away from the place where you forgot to checkin?

But this begs the question, why even checkin on Foursquare? What benefit does it have? (Sidenote: yes, this is a correct usage of the commonly misused phrase, “begs the question.”)

What are the benefits of Foursquare?

Foursquare is a social network that allows people to share their location, leave tips and photos, find interesting places, and occasionally get local deals. Do we really use it for these things?

Yes, some of the tips are cool, like seeing what menu items someone likes at a restaurant. Some tips are pointless, like, “avoid stupid cars parked in the streets” (but I guess the smart cars shouldn’t be avoided?).

When was the last time you got a good deal with Foursquare? Most places I visit offer only an American Express deal (I don’t have an AmEx credit card). I only remember a single deal in the last year, which was $4 of free bananas with a Foursquare checkin.

Beyond this rare perk, most people use Foursquare to tell us where they are. But do we really care? Some sites like Please Rob Me illustrate a (slightly exaggerated) danger of this oversharing.

Essentially, Foursquare is a game

Why do we play this location-based game? Just for the points and cool badges? It’s a game that can’t be won.

Social games are fun, yes. But I like a game that actually takes skill to play—or even involves playing! Foursquare involves just checking in and getting points. Whoop-dee-doo.

Leaving Foursquare?

So I don’t see much value in Foursquare for myself, but maybe you can convince me otherwise. I won’t completely delete my account and leave Foursquare, but I’ll probably stop compulsively checking in unless I truly want people to know where I am, which would only be when I think people actually care.

What about you? Do you use Foursquare, Yelp, SCVNGR, Whrrl, or any other location-based apps? If so, do you do anything with them beyond checking in?

Jeremy has been rewatching episodes over the break and noticed several things from the first ten episodes.

In listening to the latest “Listener Feedback” (4/12), I heard that one of your listeners thinks August is the Wizard of Oz. One (thin) piece of evidence, he said, to prove this is that August’s license plate shows he’s from Kansas. Dorothy & Toto were from Kansas, but the Wizard came from Omaha, Nebraska.

Dan explained more about Pinocchio from Disney’s movie and the original fairy tale. But Ryan disagrees:

August can’t be Pinocchio, because the creator’s said he put HIS story in the book. Pinocchio was already in the book.

I’ve heard people on your podcast speculate that either Regina or her mother is the Miller’s daughter from the story of “Rumpelstiltskin”. The University of South Florida has free audio’s of The Brother Grimm’s Fairy Tales in iTunes. I just listened to the story of “Rumpelstiltskin”, and learned that the King made the Miller’s daughter Queen because she supposedly made gold from weaving straw. Rumpelstiltskin actually did the weaving, as we know, but I think this proves Regina’s mother is not the Miller’s daughter because she is not a Queen.

A short while ago-around the time of episode 15 and 16-I had this crazy theory about Rumplestiltskin. I thought that maybe he and Regina’s mother, Cora, had been married at some point. I know that many people are putting this theory down, but I have some examples from previous episodes to suggest that this might be possible. In episode 8, “Desperate Souls”, the duke says that after Rumpel returned home from the war(being a coward), his wife could not bear the sight of him. Perhaps, while he was at war, she had an affair-not knowing if he was dead or not. Being afraid of him finding out, she fled. Thus the story that the duke says is born. Rumple tells Baelfire that she is dead later on in the episode. He might feel betrayed and doesn’t want his son to know so he lies to him.

In episode 18, “Stable Boy”, we learn that Cora is called the miller’s daughter. She also states in the episode that they were in poverty, and she had to make a bunch of deals to get them where they were. In the original story of Rumpelstiltskin, he appears to a miller’s daughter and spins the straw into gold for her. Instead of the spinning gold part for her, she bargined with him for her powers. If the whole aging part is an issue as well, I remember you vaguely mentioning in the initial reactions that she might be placing a spell upon herself to keep her from aging normally(or something along those lines). If any of this theory is true, this could explain some of the rivalry between Regina and Rumple.

My final theory is about the mentioned mermaid in episode 12, “Skin Deep.” I’d like to say that this is my favorite episode thus far. Now, when everyone heard Regina say she had a deal to discuss with Rumpel about a certain mermaid, they automatically thought it meant Ariel. I have a different idea. When I wrote a FanFiction for this episode, I took a twist with it. I said that the mermaid was Ursula. We know that Regina holds grudges easily, so perhaps Ursula did something to anger her and Regina decided to curse her. It’s almost along the lines of the Medusa curse in Greek mythology; Medusa was a beautiful maiden until Athea cursed her. The writers may put that kind of twist on the little mermaid tale. I think that would be extremely interesting.

Hi! I’m from South America, i’m completely obsessed with Once Upon A Time, but just found the podcast and this is the first time i’m sending a message.

So I was thinking about the episode 17, Hat Trick, and how does that fit into the Alice in Wonderland timeline and i got to the conclusion that Alice came down the rabbit hole after jefferson got trapped in wonderland, and he got so mad that he started to recreate the tea parties that he did with his daughter, which explains the tea party that Alice get into. What do you guys think about that? The producers are creating their own versions so, that can change.

Still in the Hat Trick episode, Jefferson said that are different worlds, meaning that the Fairy Tale World, Wonderland and Our world are different, but in a thin line, at least that was what i understand. That got me thinking about the episode That Still Small Voice, where Regina throw a piece of glass in a hole that end up in Snow’s glass coffin in Fairy Tale land. That hole can be one of the Alice’s rabbit hole that, somehow, ended up in the Fairy Tale World?

Great idea. “Hat Trick” certainly didn’t replace Alice in Wonderland, so was it a prequel or a sequel?

First of all, you all are awesome and I loveeee listening to your show. I used to be all about the spoilers but I prefer listening to your group’s theories – sooo much more fun!

Okay this is something that has really been bugging me for a while. So ever since The Thing You Love the Most, i knew Mr. Gold had to remember life as Rumple in FL – thus began the great confusion of Rumple’s intentions. So, we know that Rumple helped create the great spell over FL to become Storybrooke, Mr. Gold remembers his life as Rumple, and Mr. Gold helped Regina find a son. This leads to my question: Does Rumple/Mr. Gold want to break this curse he helped create? Does he want to go back to FL?

I come to this question because Mr. Gold found Henry as Regina’s son, the biological son of the ONE PERSON who could break this curse. I have no doubt Mr. Gold knows all of this information because he created the spell – so why is he doing all he can to break this curse?? Didn’t we learn in Skin Deep he wants to forget (cue line about why he spins gold, ba dum ching)?? Does he want to go back so that he could maybe be with Belle?

Not sure if someone has posed this as a possible time theory in Storybrook. I’ve only gotten through part of the podcasts.

I think that time had been flowing at a normal rate, but maybe the people of Storybrook just forget anyone who doesn’t belong the next day. This would allow for Henry to grow up, mail delivery, food delivery… Also, Regina calls the State about Hansel and Gretel. As much as I some times wish it were so, the Maine State government is no Fairy Tale.

There are still pockets of Maine that are still very Storybrook like in their insulation.

Enjoying the podcast and it helps to get through the hiatus.

Jefferson talks about Grace’s sense of smell and being able to find the mushrooms. And also Jefferson was hiding and Grace was finding him, though that doesn’t mean anything exactly, it just made me wonder because the smell and finding people were both things that Granny and Red did in Red Handed.

The White Knight is Alice’s escort through the second-to-last square. As Lewis Carroll’s own self-depiction in the book, the White Knight is a day-dreaming inventor, a foolish and awkward man who is highly sentimental. His cleverness is entirely impractical, but it still moves us to adoration. When he must leave Alice to her next journey – across the final brook to become a queen – the White Knight can’t follow. We sense that this is how Carroll himself feels about the real-life Alice Liddell growing up: he can’t follow her into puberty, and is left with only his memories of his child-friend.

Yes, this is our poor honey bear, being thrown in the hot water. And this is what we need to be like.

Honey, especially local honey, has many health benefits. But no matter where you get your honey, it will someday crystalize and become very hard to work with.

We’re just like that honey.

Life isn’t easy, and you know it. But sometimes, no matter how much we’re doing what we love, we harden just like the honey. Call it burnout, demotivation, stress, tiredness, or whatever you want, but it happens to all of us.

Sure, there are quick fixes. We can stick the honey in the microwave oven, but it just crystalizes again and very so. We can throw our lives under some hyper energy and get remotivated for a while. But it will fade quite quickly and we’ll return to our hardened state.

Honey needs a slower process and gentle hot water until every last crystal is melted. Pull it out too soon and the crystals left will cause more problems.

Sometimes, we need that slow, hot pressure around us to make us stronger so we can push through and find new life on the other side. Sometimes, the pressure will reveal that we have very little left to give, and maybe it’s time to move on. Other times, the pressure will bring a new flow to life.

What have been your hot-water moments and how did they help you?

I love my Android-powered HTC ThunderBolt. I even lined up at my local Verizon store before they opened, just to get this first 4G LTE device (Verizon’s first).

But when I needed a tablet, I bought an iPad.

Here are some observations after using my new iPad every day for 30 days, alongside my Android smartphone.

The retina display is great, but I have little to compare it to since I haven’t regularly used an iPad before. Sure, text looks crisp and smooth, but the only time I can tell when something might be non-retina, it looks really bad with visible pixelation (like Feedly’s splash screen).

Sounds are rebellious. No matter where I set my system volume, some apps will still play a notification or action sound. The only solution for notifications seems to be turning off each one through the settings. But even after that, some apps still make action noises when my iPad is muted.

I love the rotation lock. This makes it easy to move my iPad wherever I want to, and the screen remain as I set it.

Sharing anything is a pain. Android has a wonderful “Share to…” menu that apps can hook into. So from almost any app, I can share to SpringPad, TweetDeck, Buffer, Gmail, Facebook, Google Plus, WordPress, or any other app I install. On iOS, most programs offer Twitter, Facebook, and email. That’s it.

Gmail is frustrating. I get that Google is now putting their best work into Android. But their Gmail app is terrible on iPad, and it’s not all Google’s fault. I can’t undo actions, receive notifications, send from a different address, or default to priority inbox. And Gmail can’t be set as a default email application, so “share to email” is useless to me because my Gmail is too complicated to setup in Apple’s email program.

Notification Center is wonderful. Yes, Apple copied Android’s notifications, but I like how Apple has improved on it, and made receiving notifications in full-screen apps easy. However, these notifications are oddly CPU or GPU intense, because they’ll cause the framerate of a game to stutter.

Apple wants my Apple ID password far too often. Upon setup, I had to enter my Apple ID password a dozen times in different areas of the settings. If the whole iPad is tied to my Apple ID, then why re-enter the same credentials? Even once setup, I have to re-enter my Apple ID password just to update apps or install paid or free apps. Considering that I make secure passwords with LastPass, this is even a further pain.

I hate “slide to unlock.” There’s no way to disable it unless the iPad never turns off.

Typing is error-prone. Something about touch-screen keys, or maybe a sensitivity issue,  makes it hard to type much on the iPad. But even with successful typing, there is so little screen real estate left to see what I’m doing.

Battery life is great, even outlasting my ThunderBolt. This is understandable because the ThunderBolt does more in the background and has a data connection when it’s awake.

The camera is great, but I don’t want to look like a dweeb by actually using the camera in public. Instagram works, but it’s 2x’d for being an iPhone app (or would that be 8x’d with Retina display?).

Reading is a lot easier. I frequently take my iPad whenever I want to read. The bigger screen and crisper text make reading ebooks or RSS subscriptions (via Feedly) a breeze. The iPad will display twice as many news items as my smartphone.

I have to buy my apps all over again. I have a lot of premium apps on my Android phone. Important things like Angry Birds, Cut the Rope, and Where’s My Water?. I would have to repurchase these for the iPad, and I would stil lose my progress from the Android smartphone.

No disk access. On my smartphone, I can upload or download a file to it and access that file however I want later. On iPad, I have to sync with a specific app, if that’s available. Otherwise, the file is worthless on my iPad (like syncing a file with Dropbox).

Voice dictation is great, but there’s no Siri.

Yes, stuff just works. I lose a lot of customization, but it does just work.

That’s it for now. I’ll probably blog more about my iPad as I feel like it.

Web design is a tricky thing sometimes. I’ll write and rewrite code. And somewhere along the way, I accidentally save something I didn’t want, or I need to go back to a previous version. That’s when Dropbox has saved me.

I keep all of my working projects in Dropbox. As soon as I save a file, it is immediately synchronized with Dropbox’s servers, and previous versions are archived, too. So if I mess up, I can easily download a previous version.

This is all free and amazing, but Dropbox also offers paid plans for larger storage needs.

I highly recommend Dropbox for anyone who needs version history, or easy file backup and synchronization. Even though I also have online backup, Dropbox adds an extra, immediate layer of protection.

Anne’s voicemail—loving community building around Once Upon a Time.

I just started listening to the podcast and I had heard some of you express confusion over Peter Pan’s copyright. I have a friend who is a perfumer who makes and sells perfume inspired by folklore and literary works, and I have learned a little about copyright law through her. While Daniel is correct that US copyright law only protects works of fiction for 70 years after the death of the author, Peter Pan’s copyright is more complicated than other works for two different reasons. First, the British parliament passed legislation in 1988 that extended some of the Great Ormond Street Hospital’s rights to collect royalties on Peter Pan into perpetuity. I’m not sure how much (if at all) those rights can be enforced outside of the UK, but it’s likely something that must be considered if Once Upon A Time is distributed outside of the United States.

Second the Great Ormond Street Hospital claims that the particulars of US copyright law grant them rights to Peter Pan until 2023, though whether or not their claim is legally sound has been a subject of debate for almost ten years. Since all recent challenges to unauthorized use of Peter Pan have been settled out of court, we haven’t seen a legal decision that would definitively declare whether or not the play should be considered public domain.

I have an interesting theory. What if Emma becomes the Mayor at the end of this season? For some reason that would seem to be the next logical thing to happen if they “get” Regina. Def would make for an interesting storyline.

This sparked some interesting conversation. It’s plausible, but this also makes us question whether Mr. Gold may eventually become mayor. He already “owns” the town, what if he gets to “control” it, too?

Belle’s voicemail proving Cora is not Queen of Hearts with actress listings. This is great, but due to how these writers think, this evidence may not be so conclusive.

Jenny noticed similarity between Cora and the nurse in the hospital’s basement from “Skin Deep.” This could be intentional since Barbara Hershey wasn’t cast until “The Stable Boy.”

This again raises the placement of “Hat Trick” in the Fairytale Land timeline. We’re positive it has to come after the Huntsman in “The Heart Is a Lonely Hunter” and before Evil Queen kills Henry senior in “The Thing You Love Most.”

The stranger is the Wizard of Oz.

1. Kansas license plates
2. Fixing vehicle when child comes by,warns child of storm coming.
3. Can come and go from FTL to real world, as the Wizard of Oz did in the books.
4. Name: August (wise) Wayne (wain as in wheel) Booth – a wise man with a booth on wheels. (Professor Marvel)

Daniel likes this theory. Jeremy thinks August is Pinocchio, Winnie thinks he’s “future Henry,” Jenny thinks he’s Pinocchio, and Dan thinks August is Baelfire (Rumplestiltskin’s son).

August’s identity is one of the most discussed topics in our forums: Who is the stranger?, August Wayne Booth, and August is the Wizard of Oz.

Keep this in mind: King George was not in power in the same portion of the kingdom as Regina. It can be assumed that there were at least 3, making Fairytale Land EVEN LARGER than we may have expected: King George, King Midas, King Charles. Snow and Charming’s marriage and the power that came with it could be a result of the riches and power left to Snow. Regina could be an outcast Queen (she retains the title and her family’s money but the real rule goes to Snow). Given the rules of the earthly time equivalent, marriage doesn’t automatically make you king or queen. Regina or Snow must marry then a coronation is held. This could partially explain the line for the Queen of Hearts about Regina not being a real queen.

The father of James probably lived because, by James marrying Snow, his struggling kingdom could still be saved. They may not have Midas-like riches but they do have the money. Everything connects.

I resigned from my full-time job in late-June, 2011. I’ve been a freelance web designer ever since then.

Freelancing has some wonderful and somewhat surprising benefits. But it has also revealed some quite unexpected disadvantages.

6. I can control the lighting and temperature.
7. Standard work attire is whatever I feel like wearing—or not wearing (but I do prefer to remain clothed while working).
8. No one else is in the restroom with me, so that means no other toilet phone calls.
9. Cooking fish is now acceptable.
10. Far less shaving cream and and styling product necessary—I can go days without fixing my hair.

10 freelancing disadvantages

1. It’s too easy to sleep in without there being corporate punishment.
2. We use a lot more toilet paper now.
3. There’s no one else to bring in free food (often called “potlocks”).
4. No one on whom to play office pranks.
5. I don’t see daylight much.
6. It doesn’t pay to stay in bed all day, drink hot tea, and watch TV shows (AKA “sick time”).
7. There aren’t any people sitting around for occasional geeking out.
8. My business casual attire now requires dusting.
9. Fresh rain means I have to mow the grass before launching a website.
10. No free food.

Fairytale Land

The question, “What does Regina have against Snow?” was finally answered by this episode.

Jenny points out some things she notices about costume design and hair styles that were selected for the purpose of making Regina look younger. Jeremy points out that she took voice lessons for 10 years and that it clearly shows in this episode.

Daniel suggests that Cora’s magic looks similar to that of the Dark One.

The original Dark One from Desperate Souls (s01e08)

Cora’s mothering skills are brought into question when we see how she treats/controls Regina. We all agree she makes a terrible mother.

Cora mentions having made deals to get them to their current position in society. We think she is referring to the deals she had to make with Rumpelstiltskin (knowing the story of the miller’s daughter and Rumpelstiltskin).

Dan sheds some light upon a few things about Cora that seem to hint towards the possibility that she’ll become Wonderland’s Red Queen.

Could Cora be the queen of hearts?

Jeremy theorizes about the picture from Henry’s book of a little girl with dark hair and a heart locket that we saw in the episode called Hat Trick. His theory is that the girl in the picture could be the red queen and it would explain why she was completely covered from head to toe and speaks in a whisper because she is hiding that she is actually a little girl.

Now we know that this was young Snow White from Hat Trick (s01e17)

Daniel puts the theme of this episode into words: “True love is the most powerful magic of all. It can overcome anything.”

“The only way to overcome fear is to face it.”-Regina

Daniel notices all the horse decor in Henry, Cora, and Regina’s house.

We discuss the possibility that young Snow was taken in and staying at the house with Regina, Cora and Henry after she was rescued by Regina.

Daniel wonders if Cora had ever attempted to become the king’s bride.

Dan theorizes that Cora had something to do with not only the incident involving Snow’s horse, but she also she may have even caused the Queen’s death.

“Love creates happiness” -Regina

“But I thought fairy dust creates happiness!” -Jenny

Snow ruined Regina’s happiness by telling Cora about her plans to run away with and marry the stable boy, Daniel. Dan and Jeremy were expecting a more climactic reason for why Regina is holding such a strong, lasting grudge against Snow White/Mary Margaret.

We all wonder why there wasn’t more sobbing when Cora killed Daniel in front of Regina. Jenny, prompted by a comment in the live chatroom, points out that since Cora was such a calloused and non-emotional individual, that it’s only natural for Regina, being her daughter, to grow up under that example and react similarly.

Daniel notices the similarities between the layout of scene when Cora kills Daniel and Regina cries, “Mother, why have you done this?!” and Cora says, “Because this is your happy ending”, and the layout of the scene when Regina is enacting the curse and Snow asks her, “Why did you do this?” and Regina replies, “Because this is my happy ending.”

Daniel quotes, “Evil isn’t born. Evil is made,” from “Heart of Darkness.” That’s what happened to Regina. Originally she wanted nothing to do with royalty or power, she was forced into it and carried some bitterness with her.

Jeremy found the Greek translation of the name Cora. It means “filled heart.”

Does Cora’s magic keep her from aging?

Storybrooke

We meet Spencer/King George in Storybrooke. King George could have ended his pursuit of James because Regina captured him and told him about the curse she was about to enact upon Snow and James and then made a bargain with him in exchange for a position of authority in Storybrooke.

Those who helped Regina before the curse seem to have positions of authority in Storybrooke as pointed out by Daniel.

Daniel points out the coincidences in the Storybrooke newspaper that Emma has.

Heartless! School teacher jailed on murder charges

News staff

A Storybrooke Elementary School teacher, Mary Margaret Blanchard, was arrested yesterday and charged with the murder of Storybrooke resident Katherine Nolan, according to local law enforcement.

Although the Sheriff’s office will not release the details of the incident, Sheriff Emma Swan says that they have evidence linking Blanchard to a violent struggle with Nolan on the night of Nolan’s disappearance. Blanchard is being held at the Storybrooke Sheriff’s and will await trial in the upcoming weeks.

Blanchard was charged with felony counts of murder, attempted murder and assult and a misdemeanor count of criminal possession of a weapon, Swan said. She was arraigned in Storybrooke City Court and processed for holding in lieu of $500,000 bail.

Although Blanchard’s motives remain unclear, one Storybrooke resident who …

The newspaper also lists Tenaya Wilkens as the spelling bee champion. Her winning word was “antidisestablishmentarianism.” There’s also reference to an internal feature about “The Science of Memory.”

Shin splints? Who is August? Pinocchio? Peter Pan? Bae (Rumplestiltskin’s son)?

Listener theorizes that August is Pinocchio and he may be transforming back into a wooden boy since coming to Storybrooke.

Daniel wishes that Emma had some sort of voice recording device in the office when Regina came to see Mary Margaret and reveals that she know she’s innocent but she’s allowing it to happen.

Dan and Jeremy are both disappointed in Emma for not analyzing the scene of the crime sooner.

WE’RE SO GLAD EMMA FOUND THE BUG!!

Jenny wonders if Gold knew about the bug when he said “There’s still time for me to work a little magic.”

How did Katherine get in the alley?

Whose heart was in Mary Margaret’s jewelry box since Kathryn is alive? Do hearts only glow when they belong to someone who is still alive?

When Emma comes into Jefferson’s house in “Hat Trick,” he tells her, “I’m a bit of an amateur cartographer. Mapping the area is … a hobby.” Jefferson then shows Emma his map.

We don’t think this is all we’ll see of “Alice in Wonderland,” especially since “Hat Trick” felt like a foundational episode.

Fairytale Land/Wonderland

What a Wonder(land)ful episode! We all enjoyed “Hat Trick.” It was different, but most likely important for the overall story later on.

We didn’t see Alice in this first visit to Wonderland. Will we ever see her? Could Emma fill the role of Alice as Rumpelstiltskin did the role of Beast? “Hat Trick” seemed like a bit of a backstory to Alice’s story.

Clearly, “of course not” means “yes, I know the queen.” Where else has Jefferson taken Evil Queen Regina? Has she been to Wonderland before? Other worlds? Both? Has Jefferson always used the hat, or other means of transportation?

Where did the other doors in the hat lead?

We see Evil Queen disguised as an old woman, or as Jenny put it, a “hag with a bad attitude.”

Even before it is revealed that the hag is EQ, she’s surrounded by crows.

EQ can transform her appearance at will; no potion required. But in Disney’s Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the evil queen used a potion. the case in the Disney version.

If your child says “all I need is you, Papa,” you should listen.

Jeff and Colleen Roney from the Once Upon a Time Fan Podcast shared some background to several pop colture references in “Hat Trick.” Jefferson Starship had a lead singer named Grace.

Jefferson’s one condition for working for EQ was that his daughter would want for nothing. Perhaps EQ kept her word when, finally, Grace wants for nothing in Storybrooke.

How did EQ and Henry Sr. get back out of the hat after leaving Wonderland?

The caterpillar says “Who are you?” as he does in the story, but it’s also an Easter egg as the voice of the caterpillar is Roger Daltry, lead singer of English rock band The Who.

Evil Queen says that she knows what the Queen of Hearts does to those who cross her “better than most.” What is their relation? Some theorize that the Queen of Hearts is Regina’s mother.

Who is the girl pictured in Henry’s book? What is the significance of the locket in the girl’s hand?

Is this girl Alice? Jenny doesn’t want Alice to have a hair color other than blonde. Is this Dorothy? A young Snow White?

Will Grace’s mother turn out to be Alice? Most likely not due to the fact that Jefferson didn’t become the Mad Hatter until long after Grace was born, but these stories aren’t always the most traditional.

The Queen of Hearts has a wall of vaults very much like Regina’s heart boxes. Do they all contain hearts, or also other things? The vault was surrounded by what looks like the “impossible stairs.”

How did the Queen of Hearts get Henry Sr.? Were they married?

Is the label on one of the boxes glowing, or is it the sun’s reflection? We think the latter is true.

The boxes are numbered with roman numerals.

Maisie sent us an email mentioning that in the pilot everything on Granny’s desk was dull and dusty with the exception of a card with a heart on it. Was this intentional?

Maisie also suggested that Granny may have been in the Queen of Hearts’ court with her face covered. Looking at the screen shot, we don’t think so, but it’s possible!

Dan suggests that Jefferson thinks his wife is dead because she was beheaded, not knowing that those beheaded by the Queen of Hearts remain alive and can have their bodies back.

We think that Henry Sr. was shrunken and actually in the box that Regina store, rather than that his heart alone was in the box.

Henry Sr. was leverage for the Queen of Hearts against Regina. What is the nature of their conflict? Jeremy’s theory is that the Queen of Hearts is Regina’s mother, and that Regina trapped her mother in Wonderland by taking the man she loved out instead and leaving the Queen of Hearts there.

Storybrooke

Was Henry confused at his storybook, or just trying to figure out the characters?

Mr. Gold pushed Emma to go find Mary Margaret.

After Emma “runs into” Jefferson, he’s limping. Did you notice that his limp went away as he got into the car?

Jefferson’s house number is 316, a number significant in Lost.

How has Jefferson made a hobby of being a cartographer if he was stuck in his house for 28 years? Through the use of his telescopes?

Daniel has made Jefferson’s map from the show a bit more readable.

Jefferson was stuck in his house for 28 years until the night that Emma arrived in Storybrooke.

According to Jefferson, Emma brought magic to Storybrooke.

Despite being somewhat crazy, Jefferson is also completely right. Emma is seeing the truth and refusing to believe.

Most things in Jefferson’s house were white, black, or red. The colors may be inspired by Wonderland and the playing-card theme. These colors were also a theme in part of Lost.

Jefferson gives us a couple of thoughts:

• History books are based on history. What are story books based on?
• Everyone wants a magical solution to their problems, but no one wants to believe in magic.

Jefferson explains to Emma that there are many different, parallel real worlds. We assume that the doors in the hat lead to some of these worlds. What other worlds might we see? Oz? Neverland? This lays the foundation to explore stories that wouldn’t mesh well with the stories that have been combined in Fairytale Land.

Jefferson’s says that his curse is that he, like everyone else, has had the one he loves ripped from him.

It appears that the neighbors Paige/Grace lives with in Storybrooke are the same people that she went to in FTL.

How much truth was there in Emma’s con of Jefferson?

Does Emma *have* magic? Jefferson believed she had to make the hat in order for it to work; she seems to have done the (hat) trick.

We listen to the should heard after Mary Margaret kicked Jefferson through the window; it definitely sounds like the hat sucking him in.

Once again Emma’s “super power” seems iffy: why didn’t she know that Jefferson was lying when he was limping and drugging her?

We think Mr. Gold wanted Emma to find MM, despite having made a deal with Regina. Does he know the future, or is he just good at getting people to do what he wants? Is this one of those “methods” that Emma may not like, but which may produce results that she does? Whom is Mr. Gold double-crossing: Regina or Emma?

Mr. Gold only tells Regina things that are true, rather than making promises to her. What, exactly, is are the full terms of their latest deal? Has he been as crafty in this deal as all of his others?

Filomena poses the question as to whether Paige is now aging. We think the answer is “yes.” This makes the stakes higher than ever for Jefferson; now, instead of simply being separated from his daughter, she has begun growing up without him.

How many worlds were affected by the curse? Was Jefferson in Wonderland or Fairytale Land when the curse was enacted? It can’t have affected all worlds, as ours is one of them.

Having seen Jefferson’s scar, Emma seems to be thinking differently, asking Henry for the book.

We received a voicemail from listener “Belle” with several great thoughts and theories, which we discuss.

Jeremy points out that Jefferson is the first to actually leave Storybrooke.

It was always my goal for my freelance web design business to be profitable enough so that I could buy a new iPad when they we available. Business is going well, but not that well.

So why did I buy an iPad (that I happen to be using right now to write this post)? Let me take you back to November, last year. I’m an avid reader of several blogs about Google’s Android operating system for smartphones, because I have an Android-powered HTC ThunderBolt. One blog hosted a contest for a Kindle Fire. I won.

But after several months, I never received my prize. Other prize-winners had receive their even-bigger prize packages, but I ands couple others were still waiting for the UPS truck to bring our token of happiness. It never came.

Then they finally emailed and offered an Amazon.com giftcard in place of the Kindle Fire. I gladly accepted and promptly received a $300 giftcard for a $200 Kindle Fire. The extra was to make up for being late and help me enjoy my new tablet.

With some quick bouncing around, I decided to put the $300 toward what I actually needed more than the Kindle Fire I wanted. That’s right; the iPad is a need more than a want.

I went to Walmart about fifteen minutes before midnight to wait in a long long of nobody for the new iPad. They ended up not having the 64 GB that I wanted, so I later returned what I did buy. Instead, I bought the model I wanted from Target and saved 5% by signing up for their Target Red Card.

I’ve already put the iPad to work testing responsive web design, mobile-friendly live multimedia, and chat room capabilities. It’s proving a very valuable tool.

But it’s also a distraction (I’m DanielJLewis on GameCenter!).

This episode definitely went above and beyond our expectations and satisfied us viewer’s hunger for a great story (especially after last week’s episode “Dreamy” which we thought was a bit of a let down).

Fairytale Land

We discuss of how we loved this episode and also of the various opinions of the fans.

Finally we got to see the long awaited Red Riding Hood in the opening title scene.

So the Three Little Pigs is mentioned with Peter’s “Or I’ll huff and I’ll puff…” quote. Thankfully we assume there will be no more expounding upon that story and won’t be seeing little swines scurrying throughout Storybrooke’s dumpsters!

We are also quite pleased that the true identity of the wolf has finally been revealed! She is? Such a great surprise!

Jeremy quote, “…I’m glad Once Upon a Time isn’t a musical.”

Watching things a second time, third time, or even fourth time help out a lot, such as realizing that Granny was calling for red to make sure she was there safe in the house and not outside with the hunters. A thanks goes out to Tast_E_Cakes who emailed in!

Hi guys,

It just hit me, the reason Granny called Red into the room when the hunters were at the door was to make sure she(Red) was still in the house. Initially I was confused just as Red was, asking myself why did Granny call her into the room? After all It wasn’t as if Granny was asking her if she wanted to go, and in all actuality Granny forbid her to go. But it makes perfect sense now, Granny was ensuring the safety of her granddaughter by keeping the hunting party at the door and calling out to Red to make sure she was safe inside the house with the cloak on before she let the hunting party proceed on their way! I just love it when I get a epiphany!

Don’t mess with Granny!

The hunters should have tracked the wolf in daylight as Red figured out, not during the night. Also Red seems to have a lot of power, much different than the “Little Red Riding Hood” stories we were told as children.

We discuss how this episode intertwines Snow’s character during the time when she first starts off in the woods. Also how she is caught red handed with the eggs she was taking.

Snow, “Not a lot…”

Also what a mess the wolf left! Red what have you done! We talk about how the blood got in the well… yes it was a very interesting discussion.

We then hear Granny’s very intense speech on her encounter with the wolf as a child. We find out that there have been at least two Ogre’s Wars and maybe even a third or fourth!

“The wolf came back to her and turned her.”

So is being a werewolf hereditary seeing it has been in Red’s family? Also Red said, “when there’s something I want I’m good at tracking it down.” So how much “power” does Red truly possess in Storybrooke?

We notice Snow said that Red can save everyone! So how far can we take that statement?

Peter had chains in his bag because prior to this he had already been prepared to join the hunting party against the wolf.

Too bad they didn’t help him out!

And why did Granny stay behind? Did she become the wolf to cause the hunting party to chase her instead? Why did they run away when no one knew it was a werewolf?

Storybrooke

The episode starts out with Emma having a conversation with David in the office and we see Emma use her “superpower” again.

We listen to the clip of August talking about his trip to Nepal and his encounter with lemurs (which Ruby immediately takes a huge fascination to!) An interesting theory begins to develop as we listen to Nick’s theory he emailed in to the podcast. Thanks Nick!

Hey guys, Nick here with another theory–this one about how August Booth could actually be Pinocchio.

In the pilot, we see Pinocchio as a “real boy” already, so let’s assume for the purposes of this theory that the main events of his traditional fairy tale have already happened by the time the curse is enacted.

In researching my theory, I came across “Fables,” the comic book series that shares many of the same fairy-tale-characters-in-our-world story elements as “Once.” The following is an excerpt from the “Fables” wiki page: “His conversion to human form had not cured Pinocchio of his wanderlust and the boy repeatedly left on adventures, often disappearing for years at a time, leaving Geppetto behind to wait in lonely solitude for his return.”

What did we hear about August this week? Lived a whole year without a roof over his head. Rode off on his motorcycle when he grew tired of a spot. Favorite place: the far-off land of Nepal.

My theory is that the first instance of this “wanderlust” arose just before the curse, and Pinocchio used the fear about the curse as an excuse to run away seeking more adventures–except this time, he didn’t hitchhike in a whale. He found a portal to our world, and when he eventually wanted to go home, he couldn’t because of the curse. As a result, he’s spent 28 years searching the world over for a way back.

As to how he found Storybrooke and what he did to the book? No idea, but that’s my explanation of the “August is Pinocchio” theory.

P.S. Elon Bailey, who plays August, is 35. Let’s see, a 7- or 8-year-old Pinocchio plus 28 years of the curse…

Great theory! We discuss this and do discover however that Pinocchio had red hair from when we see him in an earlier episode.

Ok, it may be brown… hmmmmmmmmm.

We then enjoy the little bicker between Ruby and Granny while August just stares and laughs.

We also discuss who we had thought was the big bad wolf, Dr. Whale whom Ruby had called a “Letch”. But who is Dr. Whale really? Captain Ahab? (I hope not!) Pinocchio? (he does lie a lot and Pinocchio was swallowed by a whale. August seems to be very truthful.)

By the way, nice little extra touch adding the full moon to this scene with Emma and Mary right before they meet Ruby.

Moving on to David’s odd behavior, what has happened to him? Did he have his heart stolen by Regina? And why has he been by the “Toll Bridge” multiple times this season? Is he looking for something, maybe looking for the box itself?

Meghan Ory (Ruby) did a great job in this episode, especially with the way her character behaved when bragging of how she solves crime when all she has done so far is fetch grilled sandwiches for Emma.

Ok, so we finally get to talking about the box!!! We discuss two questions — where did the box come from and who’s heart is it really? Also this is a box we have not seen before!

UPDATE: It looks like Griffin Hall would be too expensive for us, so we’re looking at other alternatives that would be free admission.

I organized Cincinnati’s first social-media conference last year at Northern Kentucky University’s (NKU) Griffin Hall. They have a beautiful “digitorium” with a gigantic, digital, microtile display with an 8K resolution (more than 16 times the resolution of 1080p). It’s quite amazing.

This would be a great place for a season one finale party!

Here are my initial ideas.

• Sunday-evening (May 13) dinner at a local restaurant with possible group specials.
• Meet at NKU around 7.
• Nonalcoholic drinks and snacks/dessert would be catered at NKU.
• We record our initial reactions podcast live with open mics immediately after the show.
• Leave NKU by 10:00 or 10:30.
• Have breakfast at a local restaurant on Monday morning before we head our separate ways.

There would be costs of renting the facilities, and NKU requires that we use their caterer. So we would have to charge admission for this: $20 or $30 including drinks and snacks/dessert at NKU.

My last paycheck arrived in early July, and I made only $497.50 that first solo month. I knew that would happen, but I was still nervous.

Now, eight months later, I just mailed a check to someone for more money than I made in my first month.

I’m thrilled!

We enjoyed Grumpy’s backstory more when we rewatched it and caught more of the small details, which lead to great discussion and sharing theories from our forums and listeners.

Fairytale land

We discuss how fairy dust is made from diamonds mined by dwarves.

Daniel points out that there’s a year between the scene of the fairies together in the clouds when nova drops fairy dust at Dreamy’s “birth” and when she comes back to the mines for more dust and actually meets Dreamy.

Jeremy dubs Nova, Clumsy.

We think it’s odd that Dreamy said he saw Nova in a dream before his hatching when the fairy dust landed on him because fairy dust doesn’t actually come from fairies.

Where do dwarf eggs come from if there are no female dwarves? How do male dwarves reproduce on their own?

Jeremy and Dan both agree that this episode was written more for children than for adults. There wasn’t much in it for adults to enjoy this time.

Dan, Jeremy, and Daniel discuss Belle’s part in this episode in terms of the timeline.

We’re reminded that Grumpy’s story is still incomplete. He told Snow White that he was imprisoned because he was charged with stealing from the diamond mines.

Listener DJfirewolf posted in the forums the scene Nova and Dreamy are looking down on from Firefly Hill looks the same as Disney’s animated logo.

Jeremy thinks the dwarves pickaxes are a bit reminiscent of the Dark One’s dagger. “Oh look, another sharp implement that bears someone’s name magically.” Listener, Obisgirl, said the pickaxes reminded her of the sorting hat from Harry Potter.

Storybrooke

Enjoyable segue: Leroy is eating an egg for breakfast in Granny’s diner. He breaks it open and begins to eat it. It’s ironic knowing now that he came from an egg.

Daniel notices that Mr. Clark/Sleepy perks up when Mary Margaret makes her announcement in the diner that it’s Miner’s Day.

Is mining an oddity for Maine?

Daniel notes that coal mining and diamond mining is a nice crossover from Fairytale Land to Storybrooke.

Dan sees the humor  behind the fact that Astrid accidentally bought too much helium. “Helium to fly away with.” “It’s her pixiedust.”

Daniel points out that it was odd for Emma to wait until the next day, after Katherine’s disappearance, to investigate the “crime scene.”

Does Emma know that Sidney Glass is lying to her? Here are Kathryn’s phone records (enhanced) if you want to look for easter eggs:

Why was the gym teacher on the road to the city limit on the night that Katherine disappeared?

Dopey was running the ring toss bottle booth at the fair.

Why does Mr. Gold dislike nuns?

Theory from rumpelgoldfanchristy in the forums on Mr. Gold and fairies:

August W. Booth is Bae, Rumpelstiltskin’s son who became miserable after Rumple became the new dark one, and he wished to disappear. His wish was granted by a fairy and he became one of Peter Pan’s lost boys and was befriended and protected by Tinkerbell, another fairy. Being a lost boy, he didn’t age or die over the course of his father’s immortality. Rumpel recorded the stories in Henry’s book but excluded parts about himself from it’s pages. Bae is somehow spared from the cures. He didn’t age until after the curse and he grows up outside of Storybrook as Emma does. He hears about the curse and when he comes to Storybrooke, as August, he comes to revise the story to include the parts about Rumpelstiltskin so that Henry might figure out who Mr. Gold is.

Jenny notices that the nun Astrid answers to in Storybrooke is the Blue Fairy and Nova’s teacher from Fairytale Land.

Where did Leroy get the pickaxe to blow the lights in Storybrooke?

Are Mary Margaret and Leroy going to be punished for damaging public property?

Is the skinny guy with the carrot in Storybrooke going to end up being Alice And Wonderland’s March Hare?

41Rapunzel in the chatroom thinks the skinny guy and fat red head could be from the nursery rhyme about Jack Sprat who “could eat no fat and his wife could eat no lean.”

Dan asks “Could the nurse in the basement of the hospital, from the episode called What Happened To Frederick, be Regina’s mother?”

Oscars were last Sunday, so we discuss listener theories about “Skin Deep,” “What Happened to Frederick,” more past Once Upon a Time episodes, and some ideas about the future.

Once Upon a Time was on hiatus this week due to the Oscars.

Hey guys,

I was just listening to episode 13: listener theories, and I came up with a theory, concerning how Mr. Gold was able to bring Henry to StoryBrook. I originally thought ( and still kind of do) that August Booth was the writer of Henry’s book, but what if he brought Henry to Mr. Gold. And maybe Regina was there when Henry was given to Mr. Gold and that’s how he seems familiar to her. I know that this doesn’t explain why he had Henry’s book but for we know he could be both the writer and the guy who brought Henry to Storybrook. But It could maybe explain why he has an interest in Henry. Also, as far as I know we have not seen Mr. Gold and August in a scene together, maybe they are keeping them apart for a reason. Its just a thought.

Dan reminds of us the theory that August is Pinocchio. There are hints that August has been to Storybrooke before.

Who do you think the really tall man is with Mr Gold, when he repossesses the florist’s delivery van? What came to my mind at first was the giant from Jack and the Beanstalk. Apparently his name in the credits is The Dove, but I don’t see how those two correlate.

Love the podcast! I found you guys while searching for a Once Timeline because the order of events in the series was starting to get to me and I needed some clarity. I’ve listened to all the episodes over the past few days and I cannot stop thinking about what’s going to happen. Keep it up guys!

The Dove by Basile, Giambattista. Stories from the Pentamerone. A prince is cursed by a poor woman to love an ogress daughter because he broke the poor woman’s pot of beans. The prince falls in love with Filadoro, who we find to be the ogress’s daughter who throws down her hair to the ogress when she comes home. At the end of the story you find out Filadoro bakes a pie with a dove in it that flies out to the prince on his wedding day to remind him of the love he has for Filadoro rather than the woman he is about to marry.

Mentioning the dove is also a reminder of “7:15 a.m.” with Mary Margret’ encounter with the dove.

Hey its Jamie from the U.K again, I have a theory about the identity of the stranger

What if he is one of the Brothers Grimm, arriving in Storybrooke, to put the fairy tales to right as per Jenny’s post Storybrooke fairy tale theory ? Also where is the Blind Witch’s counterpart in Storybrooke? And what’s really better gravy or butter, thanks again and keep up the good work !

slurpeez108 from the forums talks about August being from “The Golden Bird” fairy tale (turns apples into gold) and a farmer sends son after the bird.  Is August writing himself into the stories? Or does he have another agenda?

Maybe Regina thinks August could be the savior to break the curse. Did Rumpelstiltskin give away the sex of the Snow’s unborn child when he talked to Regina about who would defeat the curse?

Dan thinks August could be a prince in fairy tale world and destined to marry Emma.

Obisgirl:  we have not seen the stranger’s typewriter since he showed it off to Emma.  Does the stranger still have it, or was it simply a prop to throw off Emma?

The stranger is the new “box”!

I was listening to your podcast and there was a question about how James knew where to find Snow White and why Red Riding Hood was at the cabin.

In episode 13 “What Happened to Frederick” Abigail asks how James is going to find Snow and he says “A little birdie helped me find her once before, perhaps it can do it again.”

Q. What do we think Regina really means when she says to Kathryn, “Perhaps this is exactly what you need and will find what you are looking for.” ?

We know that Regina wants to ensure that Snow White/Mary Margret is miserable, hurt and cut off from everyone she cares about and who cares for her being the main reason for the curse. With no way out of Storybrooke Regina has trapped Mary Margret in a corner with no one except Emma.

I had a theory as to why Regina would take the time to throw the letter into the fire that she had already burned. Am I the only one who felt like Regina was performing a ritual. Perhaps the ritual/spell was to get rid of Catherine . Her usefulness to Regina no longer exists. Maybe regina made her disappear. We know she’ll stop at nothing to keep Snow & Charming apart. She needs to make sure they are not together & happy in Storybrook. If they stay together & are truly happy in Storybrook, this might bring them that much closer to ending the curse. We know their true love’s kiss (at the end of 7:15 episode) didn’t end the curse or make them remember who they really are.

If a curse can be broken with true love’s kiss, … Rumpelstiltskin is the creator. The trick could be Rumpelstiltskin getting his love Belle back.

Could Belle be connected to the story enough to break the curse?

Hi, this is Obisgirl’s boyfriend, so why would Regina go through so much to ensure Belle NEVER sees ANYONE ever, and all the while Mary Margaret and David are free to run around. I like the theory that Belle and Mr. Gold have to share a true loves kiss, and that’s why they CAN’T be together for Regina’s purposes. I think Regina treating Mary Margaret and David like crap is just to torment them, but they are not the key to the curse.

We think Belle may actually know her true history.

I just wanted to say I love your pod cast and wait for it every week (I am a subscriber). Great job!

So I have been mulling over several theories on Once Upon a Time;

1. Mr. Gold was truly the enemy, somehow Regina would become good again and the real battle would begin against him.

2. The next one was pretty much the opposite of the 1st theory and the battle would be against Mr. Gold.

But after this last episode I don’t think the battle is actually against Mr. Gold or Regina but their battle against their demons … that somehow rule how they live and operate. Because usually the greatest obstacle for any of us is not someone else but ourselves.

Anyway that is my crackpot theory.

We’re not sure about this being for people to fight their own demons, but it’s certainly reasonable that each person must break their own kiss in a perhaps unique way.

Hey, guys, new listener here, and I wanted to write in with a quick theory as to how Ariel would be portrayed in Storybrooke.

I believe, when we get the Little Mermaid episode, Ariel will be portrayed as an autistic girl/young woman. In the Disney version, the price of her deal with Ursula is that she must give up her voice (her tongue in the original story). In addition, she is shown as an obsessive collector of various artifacts from the humans.

If you look at the symptoms of autism, you will see that among them are difficulties communicating (sometimes even an almost complete lack of speech) and obsessive-compulsive behavior (a term that could certainly be applied to Ariel’s collecting of artifacts). Considering the novel takes on the characters we’ve already seen in “Once Upon a Time,” I think this take on Ariel would fit right in.

So that’s my idea as to how they will portray Ariel when they get around to her story. Thoughts? Comments?

I think even more after re-watching that Mr. Gold is in trouble if Regina has Belle imprisoned. If he finds out, I am wondering what he will do. But it definitely gives her the upper hand in their rivalry without his knowing it, yet.

If each character remembered who they were, then shouldn’t they automatically return “home” such as Belle, assuming she knows she is Belle? Graham never had the chance because Regina crushed his heart into ash.

I think Storybrooke will become the new fairytale land. I can’t see the characters being whisked back to the old Fairytale land because that would mean Regina and Rumpelstiltskin would also return.

We received another audio message asking about what year Storybrooke is. We think it’s 2007.

Did anyone else notice that the license plate number on Frederick(‘s Storybrooke’s counterpart)’s car is the same as the one we’ve seen previously on Regina’s car (40F5TH)? I can’t tell if the car is the same, but one site identifies Regina’s car as a 560 SL Mercedes Benz.

Maybe this is something overlooked, but I noticed it straight away, and had to say something in case it wasn’t mentioned in the podcast.

Nice catch! They’re definitely not the same vehicles, but the license plates are the same. Couldn’t merely be an oversight.

This is just speculation and not based on any knowledge of the episode. The theory that Grumpy’s name used to be Dreamy and that the whole incident about being forced to work in the mines and trying to buy a diamond for a ring for his girl was as Grumpy said it’s what made him Grumpy. So the theory would be that before he was Grumpy he was Dreamy.

If the person who controls the dagger controls the Dark One, wouldn’t it have made sense for Regina to have sent Moe after the dagger, rather than Mr. Gold’s favorite dishware? I get that stealing the cup was a way to flush Gold out and find out if he remembers Enchanted world. But if she can control him by possessing the dagger, it seems that it would be the bigger prize. AND I don’t expect she will get another opening to rifle through his personal effects.

So the question is, does she know about it? Rumpel found out about it from Dark One, the first. We know that the Duke was aware of the power of the dagger, but I would guess that knowledge is held close to the vest to avoid, oh, somebody burning down your castle and stealing it.

In any case, any guesses on where it is hidden? (And please forgive me if this was revealed in an episode that aired before I started obsessively recording them. ) In the shop? His house? Buried in the woods? I would love it if the blade was embedded in his cane just so he can keep tabs on it at all times.

We have no idea where that dagger is. Maybe it was lost before the curse was enacted. Maybe Mr. Gold has it hidden somewhere. Maybe we have yet to see what happened to the dagger.

Jenny thinks that Regina could bargain Belle for the dagger.

Hello Once fans!

I grew up in the late 80s. When I was a kid, one of my favorite TV shows was Reading Rainbow. If you’ve never heard of it, here’s an excerpt on it from Wikipedia.org.

Reading Rainbow is an American children’s television series aired by PBS from June 6, 1983 until November 10, 2006 that encouraged reading among children.

Each episode centers on a theme from a book or other children’s literature which is explored through a number of segments or stories. The show also provides book recommendations for kids to look for when they go to the library. It is the third-longest running children’s series in PBS history, after Mister Rogers’ Neighborhood and Sesame Street. It was also one of the first PBS shows to be broadcast in stereo.

One of the most memorable episodes to me was the one that featured the story of Rumpelstiltskin. This is how I learned his story. The episode is about 30 minutes long if you’ve got time. Enjoy!
