#phi047 | Atlanta-based sound junkie / producer / instrumentalist Ryan T. (tay0) makes experimentally-minded electronic music combining elements of ambient, IDM, hip hop, noise, and drum & bass / breaks. With the new EP Possible Futures, he attempts to communicate a cautious optimism about where we’re headed, using a combination of sound collage, complex ambient textures, and minimalist grooves. This record also involved more in-the-box production techniques than ever before, moving away from previous use of live drums and other traditional instruments to focus on the use of found sounds, signal processing, and sound design to create organically evolving compositions.

Bonus: This digital EP includes a high-quality music video (mp4) of the track “Possible Futures.”

For the third consecutive year, we will have a vendor table at MAGFest!

What is MAGFest, you say?

“MAGFest is a music and video gaming festival run by fans, for fans. In more verbose terms, it’s an annual event dedicated to the celebration of video games and video game music. Every year offers 24-hour console, arcade, and PC game rooms, live video game cover bands, a vendors area, and guest speakers from the video game industry and fan scene. It also features a “JamSpace” available to all attendees for impromptu music performances. Numerous other events are scheduled each day.

What makes MAGFest unique is that it’s an event run by fans for fans. There are no corporate sponsors, no over-crowded showfloors, and no top-secret-behind-closed-doors showings. MAGFest is built from the ground up to be a party-like atmosphere with focus on community and fan creations, which creates an environment that no other expo or convention can ever recreate.”

Rescued from a storage bin of dusty cassette tapes from the 1990′s, Benchwork is a low resolution image of the big bang that created R_Garcia’s music universe.

This hissy, grungy and warped ensemble was created using Fast Tracker II (PC DOS), OctaMED Studio (Amiga) and captured onto a cassette tape directly from the computers, using no recording consoles or effects. The tracks were given a thorough re-mastering by R_Garcia in 2012 and are in the best shape of their long, reclusive lives.

More than mere “cracktros,” the 12 tracks of BenchWork invoke an unapologetic mix of demoscene frugality, chiptune crunch, and classic IDM embellishment — all parts of the final formula for the modern R_Garcia sound.

Fans of Garcia’s guitar/vocal output will likely be less stimulated by this collection, as it is instrumental, raw, and lacking in live performance.
However, fans of Garcia’s 2000-2005 catalog will find much to savor in the frenetic drums, catchy melodies, and humorous gallop of this music.

Consider this the birth of the R_Garcia multiverse; the genesis of a musician in perpetual transition; a glorious pile of cigarette-stained home recordings for one and all to enjoy after 20 years of storage in a pungent box.
