Intel Recently Made the Announcement that they were exiting the Desktop Motherboard Business.

Here's a letter they sent to their system builder partners:

Dear Intel® Technology Provider Partner,

If you build systems or devices based on Intel motherboards, we want to provide some additional information about Intel's recent announcement about the future direction of our motherboard business. Intel has decided to transition out of manufacturing motherboards for Desktop computers over the next few years. We want to clarify what this means in both the short and long term, but also to put these decisions in a broader context so that you have a better understanding of our decision, and understand some of the opportunities we see for our channel partners as a result.

For our 2013 business:

We will continue to manufacture and stock our current desktop motherboard offerings. Our intention is to conduct business as usual, and you should not be impacted in your ability to purchase and sell Intel desktop motherboards.

We will manufacture Intel motherboards to drive the launch and ramp of the 4th Generation Intel® Core Processor (Haswell) through the product lifecycle.

Our warranty commitments continue for any board we have sold and will sell. We are committed to quality and customer service, as stated in our Warranty Terms and Conditions.

What does this mean in the longer term?

Does this action imply Intel is moving away from the desktop business? We want to be clear on this: Intel believes the Desktop segment is a large, growing, and important business. Our commitment to system manufacturers and the success of our channel customers is unwavering. We have seen a proliferation of motherboard providers in the ecosystem, providing many innovative designs. The desktop segment is a healthy, well-developed business and ecosystem. Because Intel has become one of many players in the market, we are comfortable many desktop motherboard options will continue to be available from our Original Design Manufacturing (ODM) motherboard partners. Over time, Intel's motherboard division will be supporting our board ODM board partners with more Form Factor Reference Designs (FFRD) to help ensure a robust level of board designs for our key platform transitions and solution segments.

Focus on Next Unit of Computing (NUC):

This decision allows us to increase innovation in the channel. Specifically, Intel will continue to sell and develop our small form factor "Next Unit of Computing" (NUC) product line as one strategy for desktop innovation. This is an exciting product line, and we are already seeing excellent opportunities for resellers in retail segments and embedded applications and solutions. Next Unit of Computing is a significant opportunity for Intel Technology Providers to offer new and exciting products to their customers.

New Mobile Data Center Arrives at Nor-Tech

Nor-Tech received a brand new Mobile Data Center today for a project we're building for the FAA. A group of us gathered around the large box like we were kids gathered around a Christmas tree.

The chassis is built by a company called Elliptical Mobile Solutions.

We like offering their products because they serve a unique niche of the market for people needing to set-up data centers in a non-traditional location. Some of them are even self-propelled although this one was a little bit too big for that feature. Lucky for us, Larry brought his forklift over to help move it out of the box.

This particular unit is being sold to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). More details on the project can be seen here. The chassis may be empty right now, but soon it will be loaded with some of the most powerful computing equipment on the planet!

Nor-Tech Building Super Computer for the Federal Aviation Agency

Nor-Tech has recently won a contract to build a Super Computer for the FAA (Federal Aviation Agency).

One of the jobs it will work on is Solar Flare radiation propagation for the first passenger space flights.

The FAA is going to be working with Virgin Galactic / Richard Branson to do the testing.
