Problem solved — and it was much simpler than expected!

After all this investigation, the culprit turned out to be purely mechanical.

The M-Audio EX-P has small felt pads on the underside of the pedal platform that act as buffers at each end of the pedal’s travel. One of them — the one at the bottom end — had come unglued. This felt pad is important because it keeps the pedal slightly raised at the minimum position.

Without it, when I released my foot the pedal would drop that extra millimeter and then spring back up, causing a tiny but enough movement for the potentiometer to register a signal variation — which the Nord was picking up as jitter.

The fix: reglue the felt pads back in place. Configuration-wise, the EX-P works perfectly with the Nord Stage 4 set to Yamaha FC7 mode.

So the EX-P is fully compatible with Nord after all — @maxpiano who mentioned it worked fine on his NS3 was absolutely right. My apologies for the “incompatibility” claim!

Thanks everyone for the help and suggestions.
Statistics: Posted by LUISVL4D — Yesterday, 00:36

At this point I'm fairly confident it's a compatibility issue between the M-Audio EX-P and Nord keyboards in general, rather than a settings or mechanical problem.

Will "in general" is just your opinion, as I said it works fine for me instead. Maybe what you have is a specific issue with your NS4 CtrlPedal inout rather than a "general" compatibility one as you calim? Unless you are able to test that same pedal other Nord models, you should not generalize

Technically speaking, a pedal is just a linear pot with a 3 wires connection, so as far as the pot is of a standard value for that purpose (EX-P if I remember well should be 10 KOhm, exactly like Roland EV5 and many other pedals) and not defective, it makes no sense to talk of "compatibility" of the pedal model itself.

Thanks for the technical insight — that's a fair point.
I've been thinking about it and maybe the issue is actually with the pedals themselves rather than compatibility. I bought both EX-P pedals new but they've been in use for quite some time now, and the same problem occurred after a while on my previous Nord Stage 3 and another Nord Stage 4 Compact as well.
So perhaps the potentiometers have worn out or accumulated dirt over time. I'm going to try cleaning them with contact cleaner and see if that makes a difference.
I'll report back with the results!
Statistics: Posted by LUISVL4D — 27 May 2026, 18:36

You are doing nothing wrong, that's how the ExtKeybToLo works, the section(s) assigned to LO(wer) part Ext are completely isolated from NE5 pedals when ExtKeybToLo is active (only exception being the Organ section, for which the CtrlPedal works for both upper and lower in any case).

EDIT: possible workaround, if your External Keyboard has some MIDI processing and routing capabilities, you may actually send the CtrlPed MIDI CC (11) from NE6 to it (via Global Channel) and then have the external keyboard re-use it when controlling the LO part of NE6 (but as said, this requires a master with good MIDI handling features or... add a computer/tablet in the setup to that MIDI processing job)
Statistics: Posted by maxpiano — 27 May 2026, 16:02

When using the function External keyboard controlling the LO Zone on NE6, I notice that the volume pedal (connected to the control pedal input) don't work on the LO section, which is controlled by the external keyboard. When I use only the NE6 with split keyboard for the same program the pedal affects both zones. Would like both zones to be affected with this setup. Any ideas what I'm doing wrong?

At this point I'm fairly confident it's a compatibility issue between the M-Audio EX-P and Nord keyboards in general, rather than a settings or mechanical problem.

Well "in general" is just your opinion, as I said it works fine for me instead. Maybe what you have is a specific issue with your NS4 CtrlPedal input rather than a "general" compatibility one as you claim? Unless you are able to test that same pedal other Nord models, you should not generalize

Technically speaking, a pedal is just a linear pot with a 3 wires connection, so as far as the pot is of a standard value for that purpose (EX-P if I remember well should be 10 KOhm, exactly like Roland EV5 and many other pedals) and not defective, it makes no sense to talk of "compatibility" of the pedal model itself.
Statistics: Posted by maxpiano — 27 May 2026, 07:39

One more thing to add, to share how I have personally been using Song mode and I have yet to run out of space for songs across FIVE different bands.

I am in two cover bands that do a variety of songs, some of which overlap with one another, but I find it better to have discrete songs for each band saved in their own banks. One band is called Flat Elvis, so all of my songs are named with "FE" at the start. The other band is The Usual Suspects and these songs start with "US."

I'm in two tribute bands that have very different songs and I have them also saved into their own banks. Clash tribute Clampdown has songs named with "CD" at the start and INXS tribute starts with "NXS" and then the name of the song for all of these.

Finally, I play in an original band that I toured with for a long time and all of those songs are saved into their own bank. Fighting Gravity = "FG" at the start of the name. I start to run short on things like sample memory and program memory, though I have figured out how to manage this.

I use a naming convention for each band's songs when I'm saving them, so if I need to do a bundle upload or find something specific, I can do a search in the sound manager software to find them by unique identifier for each band.

I'll take a screenshot one day when I have it hooked up to show you. I share all of this to provide some additional context on how it is possible to manage many many songs within the memory of the NS3.
Statistics: Posted by ericL — 26 May 2026, 23:33

Thanks for the long thoughtful response. I'm not trying to confuse, I just want to add a song in a bank and not erase what IS in that spot already. I'd prefer, as my Korg does, that everything after (in all banks too) simply move up the ladder as it were. The Nord Song Banks don't seem to have this ability except when you're working within the app on a connected device. (Even then, it really doesn't allow you to insert a patch into a bank's space and shift everything that comes after.

Nord Song Banks do have that ability, you don't need an app, that "Organize" function is built into the board, as you've probably now seen from ericL's subsequent posts. His screen shot only shows the instructions up to the section where it talks about swapping programs, but locate that part of the manual and you'll see it goes on to talk about moving (rather than swapping) a program, where it will indeed insert the program and "move everything up the ladder" as you say. (And when I say "program", this applies both to organizing Programs and also to organizing Songs, which are sets of 1-to-5 "pointers" to Programs.)

Here's what I'm doing. Say a typical band night involves 5 banks.

Again, it sounds like you're using wrong terms (and/or are using the board in some unusual way). On the NS3, if you''re in Song Mode, you can have up to 50 songs in each bank. If you're not playing hundreds of songs in one gig, you wouldn't generally need 5 banks. Unless maybe you're doing a gig where there are 5 sets, and you want to put each set in its own bank.

45 minutes before the show, lead singer rips off, 2 set changes. One patch not in any bank that needs to be inserted between all 5 already in a bank. If I do this, say on 3 of 5, I need to put what WAS at 3 at 4 and what is at 4 at 5 and now 5 needs to be 1 of the next bank... and so one all the way up all the rest of the banks.

Again, there are 50 songs in a bank, not 5. So I think I was right in my previous post... what you're calling a "bank" is what Nord calls a Song. (Using the correct terminology will make these conversations simpler!) Again, a Song contains 5 Parts, so that appears to be what you're talking about. Please re-read my previous post. When your singer wants to add or move a song, you generally do not add a Part to a 5-item Song; rather you add a Song to a 50-item Bank. And the NS3 includes that Organize function to allow you to put that song anywhere you want within that bank of 50 Songs.

To try to drive the point home since you seem confused about this: In most cases, the 5 Parts within a Song all represent sounds that you need to access, literally, within the same song. If one of your songs is Uptown Funk, you can use those up-to-5 locations for different sounds you might need for different parts of Uptown Funk, but if you only need 2 locations for Uptown Funk, what do you put in the third location? The answer is... NOTHING. Do NOT put a patch for another song there, unless maybe you're doing a segue where you always go into the same next song. Instead, the next song on your Set List should be the next Song in your Song Mode bank of 50. The singer is not going to call for you to need a new sound in the middle of Uptown Funk, therefore there is no need to be re-organizing those Part locations at the gig.

In Korg speak, if you do this in what they call Setlist, it simply shifts every patch that comes after it (or you copy over if you choose). Making the last minute changes workable. Nord, not so much.

Nord Songs work the same way, the Organize function lets you move them around and they will shift every patch that comes after.

As I mentioned, the thing the 5 Nord Song Parts are most like on the Kronos are the 4 Karma Scenes you can put in a Combi. And similarly, you can't move Scenes around and have them automatically shift other Scenes.
Statistics: Posted by anotherscott — 26 May 2026, 22:44

Well, I gave you my direct answer to your question. But in fact, I'm not convinced that you should select your keyboards only from that perspective. It may not be worth it. Although I enjoy my Viscount a lot as it provides EPs, Clav and more to my liking. It won't provide an organ engine (no drawbars, rotary a little bizarre), though.

O, and most important: I never tried to adapt the set list in a live environment - this may only work with a computer connected to the USB port of the keyboard. I'm not sure.
Statistics: Posted by FZiegler — 26 May 2026, 20:58

Hi everyone,
I've been having a frustrating issue with my Nord Stage 4 and I'm hoping someone can help.
I'm using two M-Audio EX-P expression pedals connected to the Control Pedal input, and both show the same problem: the pedal works when moving it, but the value never stabilizes when the pedal is stationary. I can see the LEDs of the affected channel flickering constantly, even when the pedal is completely still.
I've already tried the following without success:

Switching the polarity switch on the EX-P to both positions
Changing the Nord Stage 4 pedal configuration to Roland and Yamaha modes
Testing with two different EX-P pedals (same result on both)
The same issue occurred on a previous Nord keyboard I owned

Since the problem is consistent across two different pedals and two different Nord keyboards, I believe this is a compatibility issue between the M-Audio EX-P and Nord keyboards in general, possibly related to impedance mismatch.
Has anyone experienced this? I love Song Mode on my Electo 5D. I arrange my songs alphabetically and do a backup.

At a gig, when I get the setlist, it's quite easy to temporarily move songs up to the start of the list and put them in the order they're needed.

Back home I just do a restore and everything's back in alphabetical order.

All self-contained on the keyboard. No need for external setlist maker software on another device.

Since Nord seems to have abandoned this feature, I was wondering if anyone knows of a similar feature on any other company's keyboards?

Thanks in advance!
Statistics: Posted by cbluff — 26 May 2026, 16:47

You can only play with this when sitting on a chair, given the height of the board on wheels - right?
Statistics: Posted by Schorsch — 26 May 2026, 16:16
