If you can find a Pro 3tm and a low pro bottom rotor then you have a nice systen that sounds quite good. Ac145 Leslie is better but my Motionsound rig is very portable.
In a room two rotors upper lower will always give a wider sound than two static speakers with at simulation.
There is a fixed radiation pattern in a PA compared to 360 rotating speakers.

No, I didnt hit it. Its a strange problem, sometimes the Value Dial works, but the majority of the time not. Its there a way to change things on the keyboard without it ?

Hi Dan,

The USB cable (or midi cable if you use that instead) will transmit only control data, not audio data. Play a note on the Nord and a Note On message is sent via USB/Midi to the other device, whether hardware or software. The audio from that external device, however, will not magically appear back at the Nord's outputs. The external device must have its own independent audio output path. In your example of using computer, that will be on the computer's built-in audio output ports, unless you connect an external audio interface to your computer in which case that device's audio output ports will deliver the sound.

You will then need a mixer to combine the two audio signals, either a small personal mixer just for your keyboard sounds (which can then act as a submixer going to the band's main mixer), or separate channels on the band's main mixer.

Still, it's very unfortunate that Nord has already discontinued this old version. It's possible there aren't stocks left... Admittedly it's also tempting to delay, because that way I could already use the many splendid sounds (that work) for my arrangements the coming summer... It would be nice though if things worked out the way you suggested and I could be spared the MIDI fiddling, which is beyond my old-fashioned mind (thanks for the required websites anyway!) Hello everyone,

I found out, that you can control an external sound (for example from the computer/laptop) with the nord piano.
I maybe want to buy the nord piano and I need most but sometimes i want to use with an acoustic pad layered with an acoustic piano.

My question is, can I put a USB cable to my laptop running a pad sound from the laptop and both of the sounds will come through the audio outputs of the nord piano?
Can I play also a sound (maybe organ) from the laptop through the nord piano (audio outputs), without having the piano sound on it? And how can I switch between them?

In your decision making process consider that:

The Amount of Memory is an issue unless you don't mind
Exchanging sounds when connected to a computer.
This is not difficult, but takes too long to do on a gig.

The Samples may address the type of music you do, they might not.

Keyboard action is a personal thing.

Any new model might not be available for months due to logistics.

Nord seems to not want to put all their eggs in one basket, so, you will
probably never see the do-all machine we all want.

The Pianos have a quality unlike other manufacturers.
The Electric Piano samples are a little long in the tooth. There is a fair amount of competition in this area.
Portability seems to be a strength for Nord products.
The Clav sounds although cool lack certain detail.
The Organ sounds are great in a portable keyboard.
Good Luck with your decision.

It starts from the Filter Cutoff Frequency.

You might want to spend a little time understanding the relationship between the Filter Envelope, The Env Amt knob, and the Filter.

Basically, the Filter Envelope sweeps (changes) the Filter Cutoff frequency according to its (the Envelope's) settings. The Env Amt (Envelope Amount) knob sets HOW MUCH effect the Filter Envelope has on the Filter Cutoff frequency:

Fully left (off): the Filter Envelope does not affect the Filter Cutoff frequency at all.

Fully right: (fully on): the Filter Envelope has maximum effect on sweeping the Filter Cutoff frequency.

Halfway: the Filter Envelope has some effect on sweeping the Filter Cutoff freqency.

Note that the Filter Envelope, Env Amt and Filter Cutoff frequency all interact. For example, if you manually set the Filter Cutoff frequency wide open (bright), then the other controls won't have much or any effect, because they can't open the filter any more - it's already fully open.

There are probably some very special SysEx commands you could send to have it do maintenance-type stuff that is not documented, but the chance of accidentally running into that seems very, very small. In general you should be able to send whatever MIDI messages you want to the Nord and it should just ignore everything it doesn't understand. While I can't completely exclude this as a cause, it doesn't sound very likely to me.

You could of course have changed settings via MIDI somehow, but even in that case I think you can only change the controls directly on the panel (not settings in menus) and they are not saved; when you move to another sound, they should be discarded.

If you have Local on and you can play it via MIDI, you should also be able to play it from the keyboard. Normally you want to disable the arpeggio function when sending it MIDI.

If it is broken, there isn't really a way around it. What you could try is bring your NL2 to the shop you bought it, show them there is something wrong with it and try to get them to swap it for a different one. If they have one in stock, you might be able to take the new one immediately with you, while the old one goes back to the distributor as defective. If they don't have one in stock, you may be able to get them to order a new one while you keep the old one (this probably requires involvement of the distributor). The problem with taking the old back home until the replacement is that the shop might not really want you to do this.

As I mentioned, I think the distributor needs to be involved here. The shop may only be able to send it back for repairs and ordering a replacement might cost them money, so they might be very reluctant to do so; the distributor on the other hand has more options. The shop and you might be able to convince them to send a new one to replace the one you have now, at which point the old one gets sent back to the distributor. Anyway, I'm just guessing here.

I really advise you not to wait too long with this. Let the shop know of the issue (ideally bring the NL2 with you) and explain to them you currently can't afford to send back your Nord for several weeks. After having had a Nord for quite a while defects could develop, but a new one should be working flawlessly. Discuss with the shop (and the distributor) what your options are and try to find a solution that works.

If you go to the Nord website, there is a link called Distributors at the top right. If sends you to a page with the contact data of the different distributors. I'd talk to the shop first and I mention getting the distributor involved. If it turns out you're getting nowhere with the shop, call the distributor directly, explain the issue to them and let them know you tried to get it resolved with the shop, but where unable to.

You could start by dumping all patch and performance banks from the NL2 to your sequencer (archiving them). The process is briefly described on page 78 of the manual; you can either send a single sound or send a whole bank. You should put every bank in a seperate file (or track in a DAW) and give them a sensible name (maybe something like bank0.syx or bank0.mid, but I prefer .syx). You could use your DAW (like Cubase), but using a free program like MIDI-OX (Windows) or SysEx Librarion (Mac) is probably more convenient.

After you've saved your own programs and performances (I think the percussion kits are included, but check the manual on this) you can try overwriting complete banks with the factory sound set (you can also download it from the Downloads section of the Nord website).

If you have question regarding the use of either program, don't hesitate to ask.

Hard to say what is wrong, but to me it does sound like something is wrong (especially the thing where it shuts down when you change the MIDI channel). I would go a bit further than say 'it is not completely OK' - it sounds like there's something seriously wrong with it. Even if it turns out we overlooked something (since I also can't think of a thing that might be causing the behaviour you described), the important thing is that you get this resolved and get an instrument that is a joy to play and can be depended upon to work.

As for not getting a response from Nord: your queries get forwarded to the distributor, who is in a much better position than Nord to help you (the speak the local language, etc). No idea why you still haven't gotten an answer, but you don't have to sit on your hands and hope for the best. Talk to the shop and contact the distributor directly if you're not getting anywhere with the shop. You can also contact the distributor, but they might ask you to talk to the shop first.

I purchased one of the last brand new Lead2X:es available here in Finland a few of weeks ago (didn't care about samples so much, so chose it over the Wave) not necessarily lusting for the new features in the NL4 either (and, after all, novelties also always cost a little more!)

It sounds wonderful and has the easy tweaking with knobs I wanted to get. But there is something wrong with the brand new thing too ! (have submitted to the support - no answer in 2 weeks time). How can a new Nord be at fault fresh from the shipping?

Anyway, these things (having to do with the RAM function ) don't work: the 0 bank for performances and all but the first two drum kits in banks 1 -3. Have scrutinised the manual and checked the midi global ch (16) and the local on (on). The perf 0 doesn't sound at all, and selecting the programs all leds stay the same. The other perf banks work OK, so do the program RAM banks. The drum kits 3-4 make a slow, whining weak sound.

One more strange thing: during the defunct perf, the slot Midi ch shows 1 and if I try to change it with up/down the instrument switches off altogether ( can be re-booted with the on switch).

Now, my NL2 still does all the music I`ll need with my summer project, so wouldn't want to ship it back or anything now. thanks for your reply. I've checked it, local control is switched on. The thing is with the exception of the trig button the synth seems to work fine. From what I can see and hear up to now the knobs react as they're supposed to, you know, attack, decay, release etc...I can dial the sounds via up & down and do all the settings with the shift button, like MIDI channel and so forth...My first impression was that I might have sent some weird controller messages to the Nord by error when playing around with the Doepfer. Pretty much any keyboard with a MIDI output will work, though a keyboard on which you can set up splits is preferable since it allows you to make good use of the four slots on your Nord Rack 2X (i.e. bass sound on the left hand and a lead sound on the right).

What kind of issues are you having with your Akai Pro MPK49? I have an Novation Remote SL49 mk2 which should be fairly comparable to your MPK49; it is indeed fairly complex, but it works well for me with hardware synths (I have several modules that do not have their own keyboard, such as my Nord Rack 3 and my DSI Evolver). For my Evolver I created a template so I can control some functions via knobs and sliders on the Novation, but for the NR3 I haven't bothered since it pretty much has a control for every single function.

As I understand it, this is all relative to the currently set filter cut-off. That's the way it seems to function on all my synths.

Here's an image shamelessly stolen from the Nord Modular manual.

LFO's are generally bipolar (on my Virus and my Blofeld I can also use unipolar LFOs), which is to say they have both a positive and a negative part - in the image above the LFO is the 'big' sine wave that only shows a single cycle. The envelope (in this case a typical ADSR envelope, though the NS2 might only have an ADR or even AD envelope) will only add to the current filter cut-off setting, while the LFO would both add and subtract in alternating fashion (think dubstep wobble).

The Stage line of keyboards still uses them; the Stage 2 has 8 of them I think. The light show on the Lead 3 is 3.25 times better though, with its 26 encoders with LED rings.

As for issues with the Nord Lead 3: the only issue I've come across is issues with the power supply. I've posted something about this here: nord-lead-rack-forum-f12/nord-rack-2x-new-3-digit-display-needed-t5038.html#p32294

If you have strange crashes/hangs when playing at gigs but not at home (for example), you might be impacted by this. What seems to happen is that the voltage on the 3.3V output of the power (which feeds the DSPs and the LEDs) supply dips low enough for long enough for one or more DSPs to crash (or at least behave erratic). Judging from posts I found on the net, this issue seems more common in the US than in Europe. It does not damage your equipment, but of course is rather annoying and maybe even nerve wrecking (when playing live). If you run in to this you could have the power supply slightly modified, but don't fix it if it ain't broken (tm).

Speaking of light shows: here's my Nord Rack 3 sitting on my Virus TI2, after I gave it a good cleaning when I bought it (I'm the 3rd or 4th owner).

The Motion Sound is not as sweet-sounding as a Leslie, but to me it's better than sim. And my Pro3x is half sim, the top horn is real, but the bottom baffle (800Hz and down) is sim, and goes through whatever amp is adequate I've never tried playing my C2 through two separated amps, which might make the sim better, since it is a stereo effect. Through a single keyboard amp, the sim doesn't do much for me.
And a real rotating horn is lots more fun. Can't get away from that.

Can you verify Local Control (see manual on page 66) is turned on?

As far as I know, when you press the trig button it just generates a C3 note with a fixed velocity as if you pressed the C3 on the local keyboard (which the rack version doesn't have of course). If this is really the case, then I would expect the Nord to ignore pressing the trig button when Local Control is turned off.

You say that when the trig button acts up, the Nord will still play the sequence coming from the MAQ 16/3, but the MIDI LED (on the Rack above the Trig button) does not flash anymore. That suggest there's more going on than an incorrect setting; that sounds more like a broken Nord

Seems you most likely have problems with Midi connections during the gig. You was use a too long Midi cable or some device was sending anomalous notes thru the Midi system.
If you have the entire setup in home, you can plug everything like in performance and test all together.
Your keyboard alone is OK, maybe the cause of the problem was not him.

I used the older Roland AX-1 with the NS2. It works! You can have the keytar controlling any patch you want, while the keybed on the NS2 can play any other patch.
