Pure and fine beaches

The blue flag of Bogense Marina is the only of its kind along the north coast of Funen. There was not money to hoist the blue flag on the beaches from Tørresø to Enebærodde this year. It is otherwise obvious to use the blue flag by Hasmark Beach. Yuo can not find better beaches in Nordfyn.

FEE-flag

Bathing water and the beach is at the top, but the blue flag is missing. The blue flag is the European standard and signals that the water is clean and free of coli bacteria and streptococci. But it is too expensive for the municipality to use the flag, although the water is very clean and nice. It can fishermen from Germany, England and Sweden testify.

The international organization Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) in 2008 allocated a total of 75 Danish ports the BLUE FLAG, indicating that hygiene and a range of environmental conditions found okay.

Verner Panton - designer and architect

Born in 1926 on Funen

The famous designer and architect Verner Panton began his career in the North Funen. Born in 1926 to innkeeper parents in Gamtofte, Assens, a tiny village on the island of Fünen, he longed to become a artist, but he had little talent for painting or drawing. Despite this, he won a place at the technical college in Odense, the largest town on the island. He studied and completed his studies in Odense, and afterwards enrolling at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen as an architecture student. He established his own design office in 1955 and is credited with the design of the very first single-form injection-moulded plastic chair - the Stacking chair designed in 1960.

The Cone Chair

Kom Igen Inn

The Cone was originally designed for his parents’ new restaurant. The Cone Chair is a thinly padded conical metal shell placed point-down on a cross-shaped metal base.
His parents owned an inn Come Again by Langesø and mid-50s accounted Verner Panton expansion of the inn and designed the Cone. A Danish businessman, Percy von Halling-Koch, spotted it at the opening and offered to put it into production for Panton. When it was photographed for Mobilia, the Danish design magazine, in 1961, Panton draped naked shop mannequins and models on the chairs, which caused a minor scandal. The Cone Chair even attracted controversy in New York, after the police ordered that it be removed from a shop window where large crowds had gathered to see it.

You can visit the gallery Come Again in Østergade in Bogense. Here are gathered many of Verner Panton works and you can get an insight into his connection with Nordfyn and Odense. The gallery in Bogense will help to pay tribute to the late architect and designer who is behind the success as Flower pot, The Cone Chair and Tivoli Chair. The gallery has intrance from the courtyards of the old merchant house – den Gamle Købmandsgård.

Brunsviger Cake

A birthday-brunsviger cake

Brunsviger cake is a local fynsk cake used for birthdays. It is said that the cake comes from Brunsegård in Tommerup at Midtfyn. My definition of brunsviger is a bold yeast dough, being poured with a generous portion of boiled together brown sugar and butter. Brunsviger tastes best warm and with lots of icing on.

You can not have been on the Hans Christian Andersen's birth island without having tasted a brunsviger. Brunsviger Cake can be purchased at any bakery at Fyn.

Sea kayaking as a family activity

Borrow a sea kayak and sail around in Odense Fjord. You experience nature in a completely different way and it all felt more pervasive. More and more people are beginning to look at sea kayak voyage and begins to see the many qualities and possibilities of the activity. First, it is not as difficult as many think. Most can actually have a successful experience of even a short course.

Sea kayak sailing is incredibly relaxing and a different way to be together as a family. There are several places on Nordfyn, where you can take a tour of sea kayaking. Take the trip to Æbleø by Bogense or a trip to Vigelsø by Klintebjerg. Flyvesandet is also an incredibly beautiful and rich natural place.

Enebærodde

Enebærodde is Fyns largest heathland with heather and juniper bushes. The area is protected with access walking everywhere. Cattle and sheep graze on the beach meadow. At Enebærodde there are good chances of see viper especially in April where you can spot them on places with stones and sand.

Enebærodde is located at the end of Odense Fjord, ca. 5 km. east of Otterup. You go to Hasmark Beach and head for 'Halshusene'. Take the first road on the right side before you reach Hasmark Camping and you will find the area easily. You have to take a walk for about 3,5 kilometers before you reach Enebærodde.

Enebærodde is a 6 km long and 20 to 750 m wide isthmus of Nordfyn, between the Kattegat and the western side of Odense Fjord.
Tangen is Fyns largest continuous hot area, and is named after the juniper bushes that grow on the device. At Tangen also growing bell heather, heather moorland and crowberry. Among the wildlife are viper, snakes and lizards. The area at the Odense Fjord is a wildlife sanctuary for birds.

The Norwegian House in Hofmansgaves park

The Norwegian's house in park Hofmansgaves strains from 1814. The Norwegians built the house as thanks for a precious consignment of grain to the starving Norwegian people.

It was during the Napoleonic warsthat it succeeded Hofmannsgave to sail a cargo of grain to Norway. This precious help was not forgotten. After the war was over in 1814, the Norwegians came, in turn, sailing with timber and built the Norwegian House in Hofmansgave.

Denmark's only Potato Museum

Near Odense Fjord there is the beautiful and more than 200 years old manor, called Hofmansgave.

In the beautiful park, which has a wonderful view over the fjord, there is rare trees and plants imported in the 1830's from around the world.

In the beautiful park you also find Denmark's Potato Museum. The potato has had its very own museum. It is probably the only potato museum in the world.

The museum opened in 2000. Here is the museum designed as a tribute to the genus Hofmann-Bang, who worked tirelessly farmers' welfare including by teaching them to growing and eating potatoes. It was the priests and masters men there were spreading the awareness of the potato on Fyn. Around the 1800's there was only one man in the entire northern part of Fyn, which bred potatoes - Hofmann-Bang on Hofmansgave.

The Potato Museum has put Otterup and Nordfyns Council on the world map.

Nordfyns Kommune

The three municipal councils in Søndersø, Otterup and Bogense chose to name the municipality Bogense Municipality.

So it was originally intended that the municipality should have continued with the name Bogense county, but a local referendum on 14 June 2006, the majority instead gave the name Nordfyns county, and this was approved of the Interior and Health department.

Nordfyns county was created by merging Bogense, Otterup and Søndersø counties in 2007.

The population is now around 30,000 inhabitants.

Mormons from Funen

In 1883 left the rich peasant, Mads Nielsen, his good farm in Daugstrup on Nordfyn. He travelled from the farm, his beloved wife and six sons. He was Mormon and took a train to Utah now to be saved, a son and daughter of fraud had already been raised.

In a small town called Elsinore, they built new lives up. In large slotted cultivated the desert. By hand they dug irrigation canals, and art to irrigate a field had learned. 50 preserved letters sent home to his wife and mother in Daugstrup tells not only this. Secession, segregation and lack of a wife are strong themes of Mads Nielsen letters.

The letters also gives an understanding of the rock-solid faith, which was Mads Nielsen to leave everything he loved. He was among the 17,000 Danes who emigrated in the years 1852-1900 in order to await Jesus' imminent return of God's chosen country, Utah.

Christmas around schools

Thursday evening was festive and fun in the fictitious town Kongedal at King School. In today's rise was the school that was transformed into a city with working workshops, which were made jewelry, hot wafers with beaten and whipped cream. All of which were sold by the pupils from the various Christmas shops.

Elsewhere at the school could buy cards to put on Christmas and charming 'nisser' cut out of wood. And for a cheap money. The evening of Kongedal, was the end of the week focusing and hence a portion of pupils' school day, but also a great many parents, grandparents and siblings attended and participated in the Christmas joy.

The tradition belief many keep schools open house one evening in December. Here parents, grandparents and siblings can come to see the local school and have a nice time together with other school users. In addition, many schools has a tradition with a Lucia procession, in which school girls singing Christmas favor.

The 700-years old town Bogense is situated on the North coast of Funen and known as 'the city of mermaids'. The idyllic habour is very charming and atmospheric and you will find the most beautiful view to Æbleø. The harbour is a old fishing harbour and has been renovated nicely. There are still a few fishing boats around, the quay has been rebuilt with a few posh shops, including a chandlers and a wine shop.

Furthermore the Marina has some of the country's cleanest bathing water and it is very child-friendly. The Marina a fully fledged sailing centre and a popular destination during the summer.

Æbleø

Æbelø is an island located just north of Fyn near Bogense. Northeast of Bogense you will find Æbleø. It is very easy to see from the picturesque harbour in Bogense. Æbleø is a small island that is uninhabited and has a unique nature.

The island is a functioning nature reserve only inhabited by the ranger that keeps the marked paths and overlooks the island. Since the island became a nature park in 1999 the forests have been transformed to traditional danish leaf-forests. There is some wildlife on the island like deers and sheeps. The island has a very special nature, which can be experienced by following the 7 kilometre long path leading you around the island.

Getting to Æbleø by foot is possible from Jersore, but it is preferable when the tides are low, as you have to walk a couple of kilometres of shallow water. Ask the locals for information or go there by one of the many trips there will be made during the summerperiod.

Fishing from Æbleø is also very good and popular. Especially seatrouts should be able to catch. Try out a Summernight-fishing from Æbleø. It is a very beautiful and special experience but don’t expect to many fish.

The Dolmen

Access is easy, it is only a short walk. The site itself is a landmark and cannot be missed. It is marked on most maps and signposted. You can park behind the house and it is easy to see then. It is more difficult to find the dolmen from the street, but then simply ask people for the 'Langdysse'.

In the back yard of the houses Kappendrup 55-63 you will find the burial mound and the barrow 'Kappendrup Church'. Though the name is hinting differently the place was established in the period 3900-1700 B. C.

Kappendrup is a minor village with only 287 inhabitants.

Flyvesandet lies on the northern coast of Fyn - Funen. The nearest small town is Otterup. The beach is of outstanding quality and has been the voted the best on the island of Fyn. The beach is very popular for families with children as much of the water is very shallow. It is also a very popular place for fishing.

The landscape round about contains many sand dunes. The area is popular with kite flyers and windsurfers. Especially german tourits love to fly with kite flyers in the area.

There is a campsite nearby called Flyvesandets Camping, not topmodern but very cosy and a wonderland for children. You will find a kiosk open on the beach in high season.

Otterup Flea Market

Otterup has a weekly flea markets throughout the summer. A traditional flea market, where private citizens display their battered but beautiful second-hand goods. The flea markets takes place in Otterup City every saturday from 9am to 2pm.

Here, you can find antiquities as well as stalls from local farm shops selling everything from honey and vegetables to cheese and fish. Children will also be there selling out their old toys for cheap money. The goods are usually inexpensive and range in quality depending on what you are looking for.

You can also sit down, have a sasuage and a local beer and listen to the local folk musicians. It costs a little and tastes a great.

A market where families with children can spend a good time in a relaxed atmosphere. An mix of old and new, Otterup Flea Market is a great opportunity to browse some of the area's finest food and second-hand goods.

The stone in the Glavendrup Grove

One place is though unique if you want to follow the footsteps of the Vikings - the Glavendrup Grove near Skamby.

In the Glavendrup Grove the Glavendrup stone was found. The Vikings buried their dead fellowmen in burial mounds or stone ships, a symbol of the voyage to the land of the dead. Burial mounds are found all over Northfunen, whereas ship burials are rare.

The stone in the Glavendrup Grove is dated back to the 9th century. The longest inscription found in Denmark carved on three sides was found on the stone. 210 runic letters is carved in the stone.The stone was put up by Ragnhild and her sons and it was erected in memory of the Viking chieftain Alle den Blege in English: Alle the Pale.

The Glavendrup Stone is standing at the end of the largest preserved stone ship in Denmark - originally 60 m long and 12 m wide. The place is open for everyone and you will find beautiful surroundings. Glavendrup is worth a visit to see the restored Viking ship-building rig. It forms part of a series of stones arranged in the form of a ship that are around sixty metres long. A grove of trees has been built around the stones to protect them. But be aware - on the stone is a detailed inscription ending with a threat to damage the stone.

Here's a translation of the runes from both sides of the stone, adapted from a couple of sources:"Ragnhildr placed this stone in memory of Alle, the housecarls' chieftain, high priest of the sanctuary. Alle's sons made this monument in memory of their father, and his wife in memory of her husband. And Sóti carved these runes in memory of his lord. Thor bless these runes. A warlock be he who damages this stone or drags it (to stand) in memory of another."

North Funen - Fyn
