iPhone OS 4 beta 3 reveals USB file transfers and rotation lock

File sharing, accelerometer lock, new iPod widget and easier apps killing are among the new features discovered in the latest beta 3 of the iPhone OS 4.

Despite Steve Job’s claims that task killing means poor OS, it seems that the guys behind the iPhone OS 4 are further tweaking the way you kill unwanted apps in the new task switcher.

In the latest beta 3 task killing works in a similar fashion to the app unninstall process – tap and hold on a running app in the task switcher, then all icons will start wiggling and you can kill as many as you just like by tapping their red kill switches.

Another new thing is that when you've got your iPod running, swiping to the left in the task switcher will reveal useful media controls. It’s like a standard media widget and it would be really cool if Apple adds full support for creating various widgets on that place.

The third hidden goodie is the option for orientation lock. You will be able to turn off the accelerometer and lock the screen orientation (quite useful when lying in bed) by using a shortcut in the task switcher. Could you please now add similar switches there for toggling Wi-Fi, 3G and Bluetooth, please!

There is no doubt the most interesting among the new features is the file transferring over USB. It only works via iTunes but it's still something. In the App section you will find an interface which shows the apps that support file transferring and their files (like Mail, Office, etc.). With a simple drag and drop you will able to transfer files from and to your iPhone. About time, wasn’t it?

It took a little Magic and a Dream but Android eventually got a Hero to champion the OS. Now, the HTC Legend comes in an aluminum suit of armor to join the ranks of the Android army. So, is this knight in shining armor set to be the vanguard of the explosive growth of Android?

The predecessor of the HTC Legend, the Hero, pioneered Sense UI and this latest gadget follows suit, but brings some innovation of its own.

The HTC Legend borrows a page from high-end laptop design – the aluminum unibody. The unibody design was touted as a game-changing breakthrough when it hit the laptop market. A lot of that was marketing hype, but the fact is that unibody metal designs still have a distinct quality feel to them.

Before we jump into any details, we’ll go over the key aspects of the HTC Legend and what we found lacking.

The aluminum body isn’t the only hardware upgrade the Legend got over the Hero, the TFT display technology has been switched in favor of AMOLED and that’s not all. Some of the other specs have alos received a refresh.

Despite trading plastic for metal, the Legend is actually slimmer around the waist than the Hero – it’s just 11.5mm thick and it’s a pinch lighter too. Something that will evoke either a positive or negative response depending on the person is the move to an optical trackpad instead of the tried and true trackball.

Android doesn’t have much use for a trackball or trackpad anyway, but this goes well with the more compact profile of the HTC Legend. Even the trade-mark chin has been all but flattened.

Competition is certainly one of the things that make the Android OS so much fun. There are already several manufacturers involved in the Google OS game and each of them has already released a flagship that aims at the peak of the food chain.

Samsung might be coming a tad late to the party but they are obviously entering with a bang. The I9000 Galaxy S packs a display of the greatest technology that the mobile world has ever seen and a pretty big one at that. A snappy 1GHz Cortex A8 CPU, HD video recording and a sweetly slim waistline make it look like the real deal in the eyes of every real geek.

Let’s take a look at the other features that the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S puts to the table.

As you can see the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S specs sheet is long enough to be considered high-end. What’s even better is that it manages to put something on top, namely the large 4” Super AMOLED display, which should become the new thing to beat if it has the performance of the Samsung S8500 Wave unit.

The TouchWiz-like Android customization still had some performance issues on the Galaxy Spica so we will have to see if those are fixed for the Galaxy S. We are also yet to check out how the new 1GHz Samsung Cortex A8 CPU compares to its Snapdragon peers in the Android environment, but we have a good feeling about it.

At any rate the Samsung I9000 Galaxy S is a fine piece of mobile technology and we are as eager as you to see if it will actually manage to top the charts or end up in the chasing pack. The LG GD880 Mini is a looker. Quite the way to start really, but the Mini isn’t all about looks. From the hardware design through the high-res screen to the software – everything was crafted by skillful hands. Beauty is function in design – nothing is more complex than it needs to be, but beneath the deceptive simplicity there’s a myriad of functions.

The LG GD880, despite its name, is not a small phone, in the sense of some recent minis (*cough*X10mini*cough*). It is darn small next to the LG BL40 New Chocolate, but by no means tiny.

Indeed, Mini also refers to the design concept – there are barely any hardware keys on the device, and the GD880 has one of the cleanest faces in business.

Nokia X8: No longer a concept phone! ("Mobile Phone Repair", Pick, up, "North Shore"_)

The Nokia X8 – or at least how the X6 should have looked were it to dispense of the space wastages top and bottom of the screen.

Will all future touch screen devices inevitably just be slabs of rectangular displays? [e.g. HTC Touch HD2] I’m all for it – especially the seamless flat glass fronted displays.

This Nokia X8 is actually a Samsung concept phone[via Mobile-Review forum] mixed with the N97 mini’s call/end keys and Nokia logo, minus the bottom triangular chin. It’s a crude edit done it paint (I got a little distracted from reading up for a test about Jeremy Bentham and Immanuel Kant :S). It pretty much closely resembles the original X6 were you to lop off the top and bottom (though I do like that shiny red trim).

The X6 (left). Nokia’s first capacitive screen device, succeeding the ever popular 5800 and taking the mantle as Nokia’s flagship music phone (if there was one).

The Nokia X6 is a Comes With Music device and is being launched globally on the 16th November. As you’ve probably already heard, this launch is going to be pretty big considering it’s being partnered with an exlusive concert starring Rihanna, one of the hottest artists right now in all sense of the word with the most number 1 hits of this decade.
