Hopefully the teams for the 2012 Home International Series will be published before the end of July, however it may be the first week in August before these are finalised.

The teams will be selected from the season ending top 16 rankings, however with some players declining to take their place there is a real opportunity for new un-tested talent to emerge into the international arena, at Pontins this season.

Having said that, if there is anybody interested that are currently outside the top 16, please contact the senior tournament secretary before the end of July to state your case, there is a real opportunity to compete at a National event and represent Northern Ireland, take the chance. NIBSA confirms interest in hosting the 2012 European Snooker Championships

The Northern Ireland Billiards & Snooker Association can confirm our interest in hosting the 2012 European Snooker Championships. With 11 months to go until the event, work is already underway to investigate the posibility of bringing this prestigious tournament to Northern Ireland for the first time, in what will be a very special year for the city of Belfast.

With three other European countries having confirmed their interest already (Israel, Latvia, Germany) the organisers are under no illusion the difficulty faced in bringing an event of this stature to Belfast and Northern Ireland, in the centenary of the launch of the Titanic.

Congratulations to my friend Kieran McMahon on his victory in the 2011 Danny Boy Whiskey Northern Ireland Snooker Championships. A worthy winner of the title, given this was his 5th appearance in the Final.

With rumours that the event will be in Sophia, Bulgaria this year there is sure to be a strong turn out at the qualifier, held at the QE2 Club, Carrickfergus on Sunday 13th February.

Bonus Time for the Over 40's - Two for One

It's bonus time for the over 40's - Bring it on!
NIBSA have just announced the introduction of a new event to the Masters or Over 40's calendar, with the aim of bringing these players out of the woodwork and onto the snooker scene.

Entry to the next event (16th January 2010) will guarantee free entry to the bonus Masters tournament on the following Sunday, 23rd January 2010. The Masters already have 5 scheduled tournaments in the 2010/2011 calendar and the new tournament has been designed to encourage these players with more competitive snooker.

The masters snooker scene is flourishing at present, with more and more tournaments being announced by all EBSA affiliated associations. Darren Morgan (below) has been successful at the over 40's at International level in recent years, with NIBSA's very own Kieran McMahon pushing him close for European honours recently.

This NEW bonus tournament will sit alongside the next senior ranking event, and will be played on the second Sunday along with the quarter/semi finals of the main senior competition.

So come on over 40's, get your cue out and get entry to two events for the price of one....What a great idea.(Closing date 6th January 2010)

Where are the Masters?

One of the things snooker players over a certain age have been asking for over the last 2-3 years in more tournaments on the Northern Ireland calendar.

Well, a calendar was agreed and 5 dedicated 'Masters' tournaments were scheduled...where are the players?

Who exactly has been asking for the tournaments? The last tournament attracted a minimal entry resulting in a round robin format being played, and the two previous tournaments to that had no more than 10 players at each.

So whoever has been 'moaning' about the lack of tournaments for the over 40's this year....turn up or shut up.

New format for the Seniors

The biggest change to ranking events to take place in some time in Northern Ireland snooker, NIBSA have introduced a new Ranking Format which will have its debut in the next Senior snooker Ranking event.
Pre registration and confirmed play on the first Sunday of the month are just some of the new ideas introduced, see the attached link for more information from NIBSA website.

I for one think it is a great concept and obviously some serious thought has gone into the layout. One thing is for sure, there is no shortage of snooker for the keen amatuer cueman, and 2011 looks like it will go from strength to strength.
