Everyone's Friend -- Baker (Sweet Seminole)

2015-08-03T10:09:00.001-07:00

Everyone's friend - Baker (Sweet Seminole) chose us at NLGA in February 2007. He spent nearly everyday, all day with us until his passing in June 2015.

Baker loved car rides, going for walks or simply "helping" put out the garbage. He just wanted to be included, no matter what we were doing. We learned very early that we never ever had to worry about him running from us, all you need do is run in the opposite direction and he would follow - he never ever wanted to miss out on anything.

Baker was the most patient Hound. In a home where the only children are ones with paws, he received lots and lots of attention. Baker had sweaters, ties and seasonal collars and let you dress and undress no problem. Baker shared his beds and water dishes with three cats - always waiting patiently behind them if they got to the water first. He also had three Sheltie cousins he loved to play with.

Baker would come to work with us everyday. He had the run of the office. He loved to greet customers and they loved to talk to him. If Baker spent a day at his grandparents, staff and customers would inquire about him. We would always tell people "Baker has the day off."

Smart as a whip, Baker learned to jump in the car, go up and down stairs and even "spoon." If you laid down and patted the floor, Baker would come over, lay down and flop against you. Baker also knew when we were approaching various destinations in the car - specifically home or his grand parents. No mater which way you went he would stand up at the last turn. We still aren't sure if he memorized the bumps in the road or if he could read street signs.

Being one of a handful of Greyhounds in our city, Baker was a true ambassador of his breed. He was a handsome, happy boy who was more than willing to stop and meet new people or children who had questions or wanted to pet him. He had an impact on several people and will truly be missed by many. Life just isn't the same without him ...

PLAYfully Yours... Life as a Baby Brother!

2015-07-14T05:29:00.002-07:00

It's been two whole months since I came home to my new family and it sure didn't take me long to discover how much FUN being the baby of the family can be! My Day (he's my big brother) says I get away with too many things because I'm the baby but I just say I'm having lots and lots of fun!

Right away I discovered how much fun it is to figure out which toys are my Days absolute favourites so I can take them from him and hoard them... I usually don't sleep in my kennel but sometimes I do like to take quick naps cozied in with all the toys I 'collect' from my Day.

I really like that Mama always has a quilt on the couch for each of us to lay on. I especially like being the one to hop on up first, so I get to stretch out nice and long across BOTH quilts; I don't think my Day minds because technically... it looks like he prefers the middle too.....

I have to say it, I seriously found myself the GREATEST napping spot EVERRR... Mama tells me that the pool table is 'not an appropriate place to slee-eeep' but boy, have I proved her WRONG! It's okay though, 'cause I'm the baby and she just can't say no to me.

Sometimes, when my Day and I are outside, we play really, really fast and we get really, really ca-razzayyy and it's all just SOOOO much fun!!!

And sometimes when we play outside and my Day is just full of moodiness... who knows why, he just gets like that.....

I like it when we get to have our nap-asans out in the screen room... but apparently I don't even do that properly according to my Day.

I really love it when we go to our camp and have our fun nature-hikes!

After our hikes, we're usually both really tired... but sometimes my Day even gets a little cranky, too and he snarks at me, for like... no reason!!

And sometimes at camp, my Day doesn't let me sleep... this is the only un-fun time I've had because big brothers can just be so mean.....

At least Mama tells me nice stories so I can have sweet-sleepies... I like Mamas stories better.

Did I mention that I got to celebrate my very first Canada Day ever... as a Canadian?!! We had so much fun and even got to wear our special bandanas from our Gramma!

It was apparently a little too long of a celebration day for cranky-pants big brother, though.....

Another thing I love... is napping with my Day. But I learned really quickly that he does NOT like to be touched while he's sleeping... I'm doing my best to change that, though!

Sometimes I have to nap on my own when my Day gets too annoyed with me... I'll be honest, it's a little hurtful but at least I always have my blankie to cuddle in tight when my Day gets too snippy.....

All in all... I think I'm getting a pretty good handle on life as the baby of my family and I'm clearly becoming an expert in discovering all the ways to keep everyone on their toes!

Greyt Friday Walk and Shakespeare

2015-07-13T03:00:00.000-07:00

Join us for a Greyt Friday Walk and a little Shakespeare too!

The Greyt Friday Walk will be taking place at Silverwood Park this week!

The walk will begin at 6:30pm. We will walk on the paved trails in Silverwood Park along the lake shore. After the walk, those who are interested can enjoy the summer evening and find a nice spot to sit on the great lawn for an 8pm performance of Much Ado About Nothing.

Public Theater of Minnesota's productions of William Shakespeare are youthful, fast-paced, easy to understand - and sure to delight even a Shakespeare skeptic.

We do not want to be a distraction to the performers nor other attendee ... so bring your good behavior!

Meet near the southeast corner of the parking lot at 6:30pm for the walk. Or you can skip the walk and just come to the performance!

[Note: Participants in The Greyt Walking Series events assume complete responsibility for themselves and their greyhounds (and/or other dogs). Northern Lights Greyhound Adoption, walk leader, and walk participants are not held liable for damages, injuries, or losses suffered before, during, or after the walks.]

Meet Action AKA Duke

2015-06-19T06:20:00.000-07:00

Here is an update on Duke from his foster family...

As sweet and calm as an almost three year old boy can be. He loves to walk, and is a good walker. He would love to catch a squirrel or bunny, but has figured out the person on the other end if the leash is, well, A LOT slower, and will probably never, ever, catch anything unless it is tossed to her. Duke remains interested, but is settling down nicely.

He is a pretty fawn color, with a stripe of white on the left side of his muzzle, and black tipped hair on the side of his neck, top of his head, ear tips, and tail.

He is likely to be found sleeping in the always open collapsible kennel in the living room.

He has interior decorating skills. This meet and greet roll up bed was safely tucked out of sight. I guess not hidden as well as I thought. Duke put it in "HIS day kennel". Yes, that blur us Duke entering the kennel.

Here is Duke, just making sure nothing better is happening.

Duke also enjoys treats, chewing, sharing a bed with his housemates. Duke needs another greyhound to tell him what to do. He is a really easy dog to have join an established pack, because he is happy to be last, and follows the leader.

Here he is enjoying a chew in close company to one of his housemates.

What you don't see is that Duke was enjoying an empty stuffy, and someone who shall remain nameless, laid down on it. Here is Duke's reaction:

What a good boy!

Roaching in the decorated kennel.

Duke soaking up bright star light. When he is really happy, his tail helicopters!

Grand Old Days!

2015-05-31T03:00:00.000-07:00

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers!

The Grand Old Day Parade is 1 week away!! 1 week!! Can we get more people and greyhounds at the parade this year than we had two years ago?! (last year was rained out!) Yes we can ... YOU just need to help by coming!

Sunday, June 7th is the Grand Old Day Parade!!
From www.grandave.com:

“Grand Old Day is the largest one-day festival in the Midwest, drawing over 250,000 people each year from the greater Twin Cities metropolitan area, regionally and from neighboring states. The event is held along Grand Avenue, Saint Paul’s premier shopping, dining, and entertainment district. The parade is the 2nd largest in the area with over 180,000 in attendance. The Parade will kick-off promptly at 9:30 am. The route begins at Dale and Grand then proceeds west along Grand to Fairview. Grand Avenue and all side streets are closed after 8:00 am."

Just think…that’s a lot of people waiting to see greyhounds!!

All the greyhounds will make an impact on the 180,000 in attendance!

And some details:
Who: ALL greyhounds and their people! More hounds, bigger impact!
What: Grand Old Days Parade (with 180,000 people just waiting to see greyhounds!)
When: Lineup is at 8:30 AM and the parade starts at 9:30 AM
Where: Lineup is at Grand and Dale. Our lineup number is 27! The parade starts at Dale and goes to Fairview.
Why: Because we want 180,000 people to see our greyhounds!!

We'll see you there!

Life is a PlayDay

2015-05-29T03:00:00.000-07:00

Life has come to mean even more in our house these days and we couldn't feel happier or more more blessed with our newly expanded family. We now have two beautiful boys to love... Day and Play are fast becoming the brothers I think they were always meant to be and I'm sure our fun is only just beginning!

Thank you to Foster-Mom Stacie for taking and sharing with us, our first Family-of-Four photo!

The boys were both exhausted after their first meeting and walk together so our first car ride home went a little somethin' like this...

The first thing Play did once we arrived home was to begin stashing toys. He quickly found the toy baskets and toy piles and started his sorting method... play with one, decide where it should go (pillows/beds/kennel) drop it off and move on to the next. I think his kennel stash is just meant to be kept as his private stash; he doesn't spend much time in there but just goes in to check on his collection and lay atop them for a little while, off and on, seemingly just to touch base.

Late into our first evening when Play started to get sleepy, he settled himself with a toy in his bed of choice and was waiting to be tucked-in but Day wasn't so sure he wanted to share that bed and tried to push his way in at the front... even though he always chooses to sleep tucked-in on the chaise.

Auntie Nan was so excited to welcome Play to the family that she made a surprise cake for dessert, to have after Sunday Family Dinner... it was a white cake and each of the boys were happy to have just a tiny taste as a treat of congratulations!

On our first Monday morning together, the weather outside was rainy and yucky so both boys refused to go out in those cold, annoying raindrops and instead settled themselves for a day of napping. We have already learned that Day loves extra padding and Play seems to love the smoothness of the leather so he can spin and flip and roach without getting tangled up.

There are definitely some differences in personality between these two sweet boys, as seen here in their napping styles:

Also, seen here in their working styles:

We also are loving our nature walks together at camp. After our latest walk, our amazing PlayDay duo was a very tired duo but still happy to lay and supervise the finishing cabin touches. I love having their lil' boots sitting by the door as they rest, melts this mamas heart knowing there now will always be two sets!

The boys are having lots of fun-time running in the yard together, too! Day has decided outside playtime is FAR more fun with company so he and Play have been gleefully scaring the life out of their parents as they take off outside together at warp-speed... I attempted to get a video snippet of backyard-playtime but that quickly turned into a panicked and shaking video of nothing but grass, sandals and terror-filled audio as first-time-Mama-of-two-SPEEDY-Greyhounds ran after them hollering like a whacko..... "STOP THEM!!! ... Stop them!! ... Oh, my goodness! ... OHHHH, my GOODNESSSSSS!! ... They're going TOO fast! ... Too fast!! ... Tooooooo FAST!!! ... Oh, Dear Lord, please help me make them stop!!! ... Oh, my goodness! ... Who wants TREEEEEEE-EEEEEEEAAATTS???????????"

Yes... I would definitely have to say that our fun is only JUST beginning!!

Bed Hog

2015-05-28T03:00:00.000-07:00

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers!

Is your hound a bed hog? If so, you're not alone...

Bed Hog

By Katie Gilstrap

I know he's a dog,

But I call him a hog

Because when we are lying in bed,

He sleeps with his feet

Stretched across the whole sheet

And his toes wind up next to my head.

Then as the night passes,

His body relaxes.

He sprawls out his legs even more.

I give him a nudge,

But the booger won't budge,

So I crawl down to sleep on the floor!

Let's Go for a Ride!

2015-05-14T04:34:00.001-07:00

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers!

Does your hound like to travel? This week's poem is all about the thrill of a car ride from the perspective of a Greyt!

Let's Go for a Ride!

By Katie Gilstrap

Let's get in the car

And go for a ride!

We've got a day off

And the weather outside

Is perfect for trekking

The trails of our town

While cruising around

With the windows rolled down!

Let's drive up the hills

And go down to the dells.

Let's see all the sights

And then smell all the smells!

Let's go for the fun!

Let's go for the thrill!

Let's ride in the car

Till we've both had our fill!

Thunderstorm

A thunderous roar -

And suddenly I

Can sense that a storm

Is just up ahead.

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers!

April is Adopt a Greyhound Month! You know what that means? It's time for another greyt sing along!!

This special rendition of the song "Playmates" by Saxie Dowell is all about the joys of adoption and the bonds that we share with our retired racers. They truly do make the best of friends!

Click this link for a fun instrumental version of "Playmates," then sing the lyrics below to your heart's content. You know your hound will love it!

The Best of Friends
By Katie Gilstrap
To the tune of "Playmates" by Saxie Dowell

Retired racer,
Please come and stay with me!
I think you'll love to be
Part of my family!
I'll show you love and
I'll give you treats galore.
We'll be the best of friends
Forever more!

You're such a lovely Grey!
You've really made my day!
Your eyes are staring up at me
As if you'd like to say:

Kind-hearted human,
I'll gladly stay with you!
I know your love is true
And I will love you too!
We'll stay together
And let our spirits soar.
We'll be the best of friends
Forever more!

A Greyt Friday Walk

2015-04-03T03:00:00.000-07:00

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers!

Spring is back! And it's a GREYT Friday!

Since it is spring, the location of the Greyt Friday Walk will be returning to North Mississippi Regional Park for the month of April!

We will be changing the location of this walk as the months on the calendar flip. If there is a location you would like to walk, let us know!

The walk will begin at 6:30pm on the 1st and 3rd Friday of every month. Meet at North Mississippi Regional Park in the parking lot off of 53rd Ave N. and Lyndale Ave N. This is the north most parking lot in the park. It is not the parking lot by the nature center. Here is a map of the parking lot location.

In the event of severe weather warnings, the Greyt Friday Walk will be cancelled. Light rain, snow, and normal variations in Minnesota weather will not cancel the walk. Adjust accordingly and come prepared for the elements! It's a nice walk, come join us!

Revenge of the Easter Bunny

2015-04-02T03:00:00.000-07:00

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers!

The bunny is coming! The bunny is coming! (The Easter Bunny, that is!) Will your hounds think he's the same bunny they met on the track? This week's poem is all about the Easter Bunny from the perspective of a Greyt!

Revenge of the Easter Bunny

By Katie Gilstrap

I will not hunt for Easter eggs.

I'd rather find the bunny!

All my life I've chased him,

So I think it's kind of funny

That he's come into MY yard

And he's littered it with treats

That humans can enjoy

But that us greyhounds cannot eat.

I guess it's his revenge -

Some sort of devious attack

For all the years I chased him

Up and down the racing track.

That sneaky little rabbit

Always seems to get away,

But maybe if I'm lucky,

I will capture him someday!

Seasons According to Day

2015-03-31T03:00:00.000-07:00

Hello NLGA Dog Blog Readers!

Today's guest blog post comes to us from our northern friends in Canada!

Poor Day is getting a little annoyed with the seasons taking soooooo long to change... I thought we might share his seasonal views on the blog since I'm sure he isn't the only Greyhound dreaming of summer days. :)

Seasons According to Day

WooHooooooo... it's SUMMER!!!
I love the grass between my toes and rolling in the sunshine on my back!
I love camping at the lake and even rainy evening naps!
Oh, how I love the soft summer breeze, as I run and I play 'neath the soft rustling trees.

Ohhhhhhh... Fall's here???
The air is getting chilly, a nip is in the air, so now I need some help in keeping warm.
It's still nice though, to not yet have snow... just a campfire to toast a marshmallow!
But, now I long for the soft summer breeze, as I run and I play 'neath the soft rustling trees.

Whaaaaaattt??? ... Winter? Again?? But... we just had Winter.....
It's winter-time again, I have to bundle in the layers 'cause I don't have a coat like Derby gets to wear...
The only fun I had was trimming the tree to look so rad but now I'm just tired of the snow and feel so sad.....
And I long for the soft summer breeze, as I run and I play 'neath the soft rustling trees.

It's here, it's here, IT'S HEEEEREE... SPRINGGGGG IS FINALLY HERE!!!!
Mama says it's spring-time and I look out to see, but still a little snow keeps peering back at me.
A new friend has come, and I'm down to a layer-of-one!
Still, I long for the soft summer breeze, as I run and I play 'neath the soft rustling trees.
