The Oslofjord in Norway was covered with ice this winter due to some very cold periods, and since I travel by ferry over the fjord almost every day I was able to get some pictures of the broken ice.
The ice wasn’t that thick so the ferries were able to travel, but smaller boats had to stay in the harbors.

And here is a picture where you can get a closer view of the ice covering the Oslofjord. Ice and snow can be beautiful!
Aker Brygge is an area in Oslo by the sea. It consists of shopping centers, offices and expensive apartments. Aker Brygge is known to be a pricey place even for us Norwegians.
Every time I go to Oslo I visit Aker Brygge as the ferry from Nesodden (where I live) to Oslo ends up at Aker Brygge.

In this picture I have photographed the main entrance of one of the shopping centers at Aker Brygge. I really enjoyed the blue tones of the evening behind the building and I liked the special perspective you get when you put the camera on the ground with all the pebbles and planks. If you click on the picture and view it large you can see some of the people walking by.

Here I have photographed a lighthouse on a snow covered headland. This lighthouse is placed in Oslofjorden in southeastern part of Norway and help with keeping the ship traffic in the fjord safe.
I liked the lonely location of the lighthouse and the other buildings on the headland. Doesn’t it look like a great place to live?
The photo was taken with at 300mm (about 600mm in 35mm terms) with a telephoto lens so it was pretty far away from my location.

We have been having some crazy snowfalls lately here in Southern Norway (I moved to the south from Northern Norway half a year ago for those who don’t know). Some people might think all the snow means a lot of trouble, but I like it. It is fun to play in the snow with the kids and it creates many good photo opportunities.

In this photo you can see a pine tree totally covered in snow. All the snow on the branches show how much snow that really came in a matter of a few hours.
I found the pine tree when I was walking in the forest with snow up to my hip. It was hard walking, but it was wonderful to watch all the untouched snow.

Check out my other photo of a pine tree in winter landscape and other snow pictures here.
We have had a lot of gray weather lately so there hasn’t been many photo opportunities, but the other day there was some colored clouds in the sky in the evening. I had to take out the camera and photograph these birch trees with the clouds as background. Also notice the cold mist behind the winter trees.
I recommend that you click on the picture to view it large to get a better perspective of the wide angle (11mm).

We had a crazy snowfall here in southeastern Norway a few days ago. During a few hours the sky sent 40-50 cm down upon us. The media reported about tons of cards ending up outside of the road because the roads were filled with snow. It was like I had moved back to Northern Norway when I was looking out at the heavy snowfall

Here I have photographed an old tractor covered with snow. You get some indication of the depth of the snow when you look on the front of the tractor.
I played a bit around in Adobe Lightroom with the different adjustments to make the picture a bit more interesting.

Advertisement: Have you tried Chitika Premium on your blog? I have been making some extra money from the search engine traffic that I get here on Photos from Northern Norway from Chitika. Always nice to add some cash to my camera equipment budget.
Here I have photographed a Red Banded Polypore mushroom (Fomitopsis pinicola) growing on a dead Norway spruce trunk. The colored bands around the mushroom made me stop and take a better look. The bands are really beautiful, aren’t they? Also notice the white snow crystals on top of the mushroom. It was pretty darn cold!

The Red Banded Polypore is a common polypore mushroom in the temperate Northern hemisphere. These kind of mushrooms are often found on rotting lodges and they have a distinctive look.

We have had a very cold period here in the southeastern part of Norway with temperatures down to -18C (-0.4F) and the cold weather created tons of beautiful ice crystals. Here I have photographed a big one that the sun shone on creating nice, shimmering light. I recommend that you click on the image and view it large to see more of the fantastic details in the snow crystal(s).

Note: The photo of the ice crystal was taken in the southeastern part of Norway.
When I was walking in the forest I came across a Norwegian Spruce (Picea abies) tree that was broken and I liked the view with the trunk looking at the fallen tree. It seems like a strong wind had passed through the forest and snapped the tree in two. There was several trees in that area that had been toppled over some years ago (the vegetation had started to grow back) so it was a cool area to explore.
I had to climb up some trees to get this picture and I almost fell down several times . I think the broken tree picture got somewhat of a dark, eerie feeling to it. What do you think?

I was out walking in the forest early today and I came across this field that was frozen. I really enjoyed all the grass that had frozen in the water and the trees standing around the field covered with rime.
We are having a cold period with -12C so everything outside is covered with frozen water and gives me a lot of photo opportunities.

Happy new year everyone! My resolution for 2009 is to take way more pictures and post them on this blog as I have lately been a bit lazy when it comes to photography.
