Every month we meet at a location in the Eastern Panhandle to interact with people who work in, or are interested in, the environmental field. This is an informal world-wide organization known as Green Drinks. These events are simple and relatively unstructured, but many people have found employment, made friends, developed new ideas, done deals, and have had moments of serendipity.....all in the spirit of greening our lives for the betterment of all humankind.

Chad Gauthier of Pinnacle Enterprises and Karen Valentine of GoGreenGals are the co-founders of this chapter. We look forward to sharing our commitment to a healthy, productive, and sustainable Eastern Panhandle with all of you. Our goal is to unite the community to embrace responsible, local, and environmentally sustainable lifestyles. So come and join us for some healthy organic apps and drinks. CraftWorks at Cool Spring is a center for creative learning in art, craft, nature and sustainable living that supports protection of the Cool Spring Marsh landscape, where people come to learn, relax and rejuvenate in a setting that fosters deep connections with the natural environment and stronger communities.

What's truly distinctive about CraftWorks is that it invites artisans, environmental educators, green builders, and other creative people into create and offer classes, gather, retreat, and help invent the long-term future of this resource.

CraftWorks director David Lillard will take Green Drinkers on a short 15-minute walk through the grounds and describe the plans for studios and programs.

Take Route 340 south from Charles Town. After you pass Washington High, the 4 lane highway ends and it becomes a two lane road. Soon you’ll pass a diner on the right, a produce stand on the left and you’ll make a SHARP right hand turn immediately after the diner onto Wheatland Road (WVA Rd 340/2)

Continue on Wheatland until it deadends (about 2 miles)—turn right (Lloyd Road). The first house on the left is Mrs. Thornton’s Cottage. The second entry on the left is Cool Spring Farm (has a sign and a split rail fence)—turn in, then turn left to follow the sign to the cottage.

Note: If you use Mapquest for directions, Lloyd Road is called by its old name Haines Road

Valley Earthfest is coming! Make everyday earthday and come to Rose Hill Park in Berryville on June 6th to see vendors from around the valley, an environmental film festival, kids activities, music on the lawn, local restaurants cooking up Earth themed fixins, even a Lawn Gnome Costume Contest. If your business wants to be an exhibitor, spaces are FREE! That's right, free. Why? Because the folks at eCycle want to help you be green and share green without taking your green. If you want to be a sponsor either of money or of supplies, there's a great website and some PR material that you will be on. We set a personal record for Green Drinks attendees with 43!! Unfortunately, our area ONLY had 1200 folks show up, so Melbourne still holds the record. Film "How to Save the World"

For the Greater Good, Inc. will not have the film, "How to Save the World" at Shenandoah University on 24 May. If you are interested in seeing the film please contact me by 20 May.

This film shares the work of Peter Proctor, a farmer from New Zeland, who has gone to India several years to assist small farmers in reclaiming their land - land which was often decimated by the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. NPR recently did a report on the plight of many farmers in India for whom an increasing reliance on water demanded by the "green revolution" has dropped the water table significantly. Robert Hughes sees this 3rd film as pointing out a sustainable and efficient approach to agriculture. This film series examines “the complex web of market and political forces that is changing what we eat” as well as “exploring alternatives to large-scale industrial agriculture, placing organic and sustainable agriculture as real solutions to the farm crisis today.” “King Corn” is the story of two friends, an acre of corn in Iowa, and how corn has “conquered America.” The film helps unlock the hidden truths about America’s modern food system. “KingCorn shows how- and why- whenever you eat a hamburger or drink a soda, you’re really consuming…corn.”

Arbor Day at the State Arboretum

Come celebrate Arbor Day at the State Arboretum of Virginia at Blandy Experimental Farm. All activities will be Saturday, April 25, 1-5 p.m. and everything is free. There will be tree-related presentations, information and advice, and children's activities from 1-3 p.m. in and around the Quarters (main brick building). From 3-5 p.m., join us in planting native oaks. Bring the family, bring work gloves if you have them, and bring those plastic flower pots you've been saving -- we'll collect these for recycling.

That's right, fellow Green Drinkers, this month we'll be gathering on Earth Day, April 22nd at 5:30 (ish), at Ferguson's in Winchester, VA. We will not be alone in our celebrations, 16 different participating Green Drinks chapters throughout the Chesapeake Bay watershed will come together to stage a same-day gathering in their respective cities, attempting to top the world attendance record of 1,800 set in Melbourne, Australia, and to rally support for action to improve the health of the Chesapeake Bay. Not just the bay, but also the health of our water ways right here in our own Shenandoah Valley!

Jed Rau from the Lord Fairfax Soil and Water Conservation District will join us to talk about how what we put on our yards and gardens and how we use water in our homes affects water quality, and representatives from Ferguson's will be on hand to answer questions about water conservation in our homes.

Ferguson's will be graciously providing refreshments for us (beer in the bathtub? Tea on the counter?) as we gather to celebrate Earth Day, to increase our awareness of how our personal actions affect water quality all the way to the bay, and to learn how to decrease our water consumption in general.

So come on out and join us on Earth Day, bring your friends, your family, your neighbors, and let's show the world that Virginians mean business about greening our environment!

Menu For the Future

Documentary Film Screenings

BALLE will be showing a series of 3 documentary films dealing with sustainable agriculture and responsible food consumption starting this month. Films will be shown in the Hester Auditorium of Henkel Hall (near the library) of Shenandoah University at 4:00 p.m. Two titles are yet to be decided, but mark your calendars for the dates and let your own contact lists know.

WHAT: The Opequon Watershed, Inc., along with Virginia Cooperative Extension, and the Virginia Departments of Conservation and Recreation, Environmental Quality, and Forestry will be hosting a Tree Planting along streams and stormwater drainages in the Opequon Watershed!

Trees are vital to a healthy stream since they filter pollutants, create habitat, and hold soil in place.

Come plant trees and make a difference in our local environment!

Shenandoah Valley Branch Monthly Program: March 11

Join your friends and colleagues for an evening of networking and education in Winchester, Virginia. This month's program features presentations on LEED 2009 and the LEED for Homes program.

TIME: 6-8 PM

LOCATION: Shenandoah Valley Council for the Arts, 811 S. Loudoun Street, Winchester, VA

Speakers include: Tom Mawson, NCR Chapter Executive Director, who will share the changes coming to the LEED Rating System and to the LEED Accredited Professional program in 2009. Our second speaker is Lee O'Neal, who will explain the LEED for Homes Program.

LEED for Homes is a rating system that promotes the design and construction of high-performance green homes. A green home uses less energy, water and natural resources; creates less waste; and is healthier and more comfortable for the occupants. Benefits of a LEED home include lower energy and water bills; reduced greenhouse gas emissions; and less exposure to mold, mildew and other indoor toxins.

Lee O'Neal is the President of Green Sustainable Holdings, Inc. as well as Director of Energy & Green Programs for CGE Solutions, a home energy rating & building performance firm based in Ashburn, VA. Lee currently serves on the RESNET Quality Assurance and Ethics Committee, National Standards Energy Audit Committee and Drafting Sub-Committee, RESNET Sampling Standards Drafting Committee, Lee also serves on the Building Performance Institute (BPI) Technical committee, Quality Assurance and Ethics sub-committees.

So what is Green Drinks? It's a grassroots networking opportunity. Nothing fancy, no membership required, no cover charge, just a cash bar, a bunch of eco-minded people, and conversation. From Automobiles and Buildings to Recycling and Watersheds and every topic in between, we'll be talking about all things green. Who goes? YOU and all of your friends! We're hoping that this will be an informal way to meet and engage other like minded individuals in the area. Everyone from every profession and of every age is invited, so please, spread the word. (and just because it's called Green Drinks doesn't mean you have to drink)

Don't forget, Winchester's Going Green has a FREE workshop coming up on Monday February 24th at 6:30pm at the Jim Barnett Park War Memorial Building. And they're open to everyone, not just city citizens. This is the last workshop in the 101 series for a while.
