The most often forgot about design decision is the mirror.

Homeowners enjoy selecting their custom designs. Whether they are building or remodeling a small, humble powder room, or a large master bath suite. At Northland Cabinets, we are able to custom design and match your mirror to your personalized selections.

The frame design can be simple or complex, mission style, traditional, contemporary or anything you can dream of.

Using the correct type of glass for your mirror is extremely important. By using a 3/16” glass, Northland ensures reliable viewing for years to come. Along with Northland’s 3/16” thick glass, we deliver a guarantee that we also employ the use of Safety Glass. Should the mirror ever break, it will not shatter into sharp dangerous pieces. Each fragment will hold together by its vinyl backing. For added stability, Northland Cabinets uses rubber gaskets running along the entire interior edge of the frame to secure the mirror for shipping and longevity in your home.

Northland Cabinets covers every detail. Hanging a mirror can include variables such as: weight and hanging location. Custom mirrors are available in any size and are often built to custom fit between sconces, shelving, and cabinetry. Northland Cabinets’ Inset Track System enables the installer to slide the recessed brackets horizontally to align with the nearest studs on the wall. The track system helps guarantee that your mirror will be properly secured and centered.

Breadboards have a long history. Originally they where designed for kneading dough or cutting bread, but in today’s kitchens the breadboard has a multitude of uses. Modern cooks utilize them to cut everything from meat to fruits and vegetables. In smaller cozier kitchens, the breadboard transforms into a temporary extension of the countertop, providing an extra work surface. Some chefs prefer a wooden cutting board, while others prefer a plastic cutting board. Northland provides both types of cutting boards.
In response to consumers’ requests for cutting boards that can be easily sanitized in the dishwasher, Northland has engineered a cutting board that is constructed with a wood frame and a removable plastic insert. The wood frame matches the rest of the kitchen cabinetry. The plastic cutting board insert can be used in the frame or removed and set up on the countertop. The insert fits easily into the dishwasher and is ready for the high temperature cleaning and sanitation that the dishwasher provides. For an extra measure of food safety, some cooks designate one side of the cutting board for raw meat and one side for all other cutting.
When the plastic cutting board insert is worn, getting a replacement is simple because Northland has several sizes in stock. By changing the wood frame that holds the insert, we can customize the breadboard to fit just about any size opening in the cabinet. By varying the frame and not the inset, Northland is able to standardize inserts of different sizes. This makes it possible to have inserts in stock that can be ordered at any time for easy replacement.
Small things can make a big difference. Kitchens that are a joy to cook in usually have a variety of small amenities in just the right place. The time-honored breadboard maintains its place in today’s modern kitchens because of its usefulness, versatility and updated style.

At Northland Cabinets, we construct each of our fine pieces of cabinetry using a carefully developed building process, which has been established with safety and efficiency in mind. Whether we’re building custom entertainment centers, cabinets, fireplace mantles, bars or vanities, you’d be surprised at the level of impact our company philosophy has on the superior craftsmanship and overall cost savings we’re able to offer to customers. Because everything we produce is custom-made, every day requires different procedures. What remains constant is our commitment to quality and efficiency with innovative and reliable safety methods integrated systematically into the shop’s processes.

As a family-owned shop, Northland Cabinets will soon be proudly celebrating its 27th year in business. We employ approximately 30 people, the majority of whom have been with our company for more than half of the time we’ve been in business. We consider our employees to be our most valuable resource, and we believe in taking good care of them.

Safety Awareness is Inherent in our Company Culture

Here at Northland, our CEO, Terry Silbaugh, is known for continuously seeking to improve both our product and the shop procedures through a combination of research and employee input. When he’s considering the purchase of a tool or piece of machinery, Terry talks with the shop manager and workers about the safety aspects and whether it’s something that will work with our process.

Terry doesn’t believe in waiting until it’s mandatory to implement new safety equipment or procedures. He does so when he sees compelling research that reinforces the potential safety advantages. For example, a few years ago, Terry purchased the first of Northland’s three “SawStop” saws. These unique saws feature a revolutionary safety system that stops and retracts the blade (within 5 milliseconds) upon accidental contact, drastically reducing the severity of user injury. Recently at Northland, one of these systems was put to the test. The saw stopped itself instantaneously during operation, protecting one of our employees from what could easily have been a very serious injury. Terry believes the safety features on these saws will one day be mandatory – but why wait for disaster if you can be proactive and prevent it now.

In 1987, Northland Cabinets created a safety director position, in response to our rapid growth and increasing concern with back injuries. Instead of hand loading the finished cabinets onto the delivery truck, extra large pallets were made for these pieces, and forklifts were equipped with special forks to lift pallet loads onto the trucks. The size of cabinets was also limited, with larger pieces constructed in separate smaller units. Over time, Northland has greatly reduced lifting, through a series of engineering modifications. The include crane devices that lift sheets of wood and finished cabinets, and work tables that utilize hydraulic airlift systems, allowing workers to easily adjust table height for the task at had and also to slide the project onto a roller track, where it can be moved to the next work area.

Respiratory protection of employees is also important at Northland Cabinets. That’s why we voluntarily implemented a respiratory protection program for our wood staining room, even though air quality levels didn’t warrant it. Nearly every machine in the area is now connected to a dust collector that sucks dust through tubes and collects it in a hopper outside of the building, and any extra sediment that makes it to the floor is swept into tubes connected to this system. With these precautions in place, it’s not surprising that a wood dust study conducted by the University of Minnesota found Northland’s dust levels to be very low compared to similar companies.

The Northland shop is equipped with both fixed and mobile first aid stations, and each workstation has its own customized first aid kit. Machine guards protect workers from table saws and other tools. Much of the design and execution of projects is facilitated through networked computer programs that aid in production, increase efficiency and reduce risky hands-on machine adjustments. During the summer months, we keep a close eye out for heat stress by taking extra breaks, providing gallons of Gatorade, sending people into an air-conditioned space or closing early if we need to.

Safety Awareness is an Ongoing Process at Northland Cabinets

A high priority for safety awareness and compliance at Northland is continuously demonstrated through safety meetings, training and ongoing re-engineering of the shop. We utilize outside resources such as the Minnesota Safety Council, our insurance company and the local fire department to assist us with training. Annual training sessions include a wide variety of topics and hands-on activities that keep our employees fully engaged in the safety process. As an additional part of our Northland safety program, a physical therapist comes onsite annually to meet witheach employee and recommend ways to reduce their risk of injury, both on the work site and at home. Employees are encouraged to borrow personal protective equipment such as earplugs for any of their home projects.

Safety reminders are posted throughout our shop and employees are urged to report near misses, which are discussed thoroughly. We also want our employees to know they should ask for assistance when needed – non of us are too busy to stop and help them. At Northland Cabinets, our commitment to innovative and reliable safety methods helps us protect our employees’ well-being, while ensuring high quality, cost-effective products for our customers.

Cabinetmaking is an old industry with long traditions of tried-and-true methods. As industrial manufacturing technology has advanced, cabinetmaking has readily adopted some new tools such as rotary cutting tools (like table saws and electric routers) and new materials (like plywood, plastics, and composites). But other changes have come more slowly.

One such example is CAD/CAM (computer-aided design and manufacturing) technology, which the cabinetmaking industry has been slow to adopt.
But not at Northland Cabinets. We have used CAD for years, and one benefit is easy for you to see: your designer can show you near-photographic 3D images of your new cabinetry. These aren’t just pretty pictures – seeing the design in full-color detail helps you to understand what you’re getting, so you can be sure that it’s what you want. But that’s only the start of the CAD revolution.

Those pretty pictures also contain lots of information about the cabinets. So once you have drawings, you have part lists and tooling operations (like angled cuts and drill holes) applied to the parts. By investing in computer-controlled machinery, this information can be directly utilized on the shop floor to produce completed parts in a single step.

But it doesn’t even end there. Optimization is the process of gathering all similar parts for a job (such as all the cherry end panels, or all 2″-wide boards) and fitting them together on a piece of raw material in a way that maximizes usage of the material. Particularly when used with a machine called a CNC router, we are often able to achieve 95% or better utilization of 4×8 sheet stock; virtually the only waste is the trimmed edges of the sheet and the sawdust lost through cutting. Even with sheets that are only partially used, cuts can be arranged to produce a “drop,” a leftover piece that’s big enough to be useful in a future job.

Lineal-length material can be optimized too. In our face frame department, which produces solid wood frames applied to the front of cabinet boxwork, the raw material often has defects (knots, cracks,
etc.) that must be avoided. With our computer-controlled optimizing saw, we can tell the computer the “clear” length of a piece of wood and it arranges cuts onto that length to achieve the best yield.

Given our industry, Northland Cabinets is of course sensitive to the availability of forest products. Wood is a renewable resource, but it’s limited. Ever-increasing demand suggests that it is incumbent on us to use this resource as wisely as we can. By using processes that reduce our usage of raw material, we control cost and help to ensure the continued availability of the products upon which we, and ultimately you, depend.

Optimizing technology requires considerable capital investment and some advance preparation for each job, but in the end it offers all benefits and no downsides. The quality product benefits our customers, minimizing costs benefits Northland, and reduced waste benefits everyone.
