Youth Worship Leader Amy Woodworth spoke at Northreach Youth for tonight’s message focusing on John and 1 Peter.

This was the sixth part in a bible study series looking at the topic of discipleship.

God has called us to love each other, he wants us to love each other so much that other people will know we are his disciples. How much love does it take to show we are disciples? How much love does God have for us? We cannot even fathom the depth of God’s love so maybe we should just start with loving each other as Jesus commanded.

“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres.” ~ 1 Corinthians 13.

This was the fifth part in a bible study series looking at the topic of discipleship.

Everyone is created and brought up differently, eve- ryone of us have different abilities and gifting through Christ. God gives us these different abilities so that we rely on each other and not our own strength. While some people may have easily no- ticeable abilities, it is important to not pity or look down on others as we all have a place in the church.

“It was he who gave some to be apostles, some to be prophets, some to be evangelists, and some to be pastors and teachers, to prepare God’s people for works of service, so that the body of Christ may be built up until we all reach unity in the faith and in the knowl- edge of the Son of God and become mature, attaining to the whole measure of the fullness of Christ.” ~ Ephesians 4:11-13

Many people pray to see a mighty harvest for the Gospel, but as we read today it is not the harvest that is the issue but the workers. The harvest is already out there waiting for the workers to go through with the shears and harvest the crop, but there is not enough workers to harvest it all. That is were we come in we are the workers and we need to go and reap it’s rewards.

“He told them, “The harvest is plentiful, but the workers are few. Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field.” ~ Luke 10:2

There is many things we can learn from the early church for how we can live our lives in Christ. They followed what is called the great commission, the commandment given to them by Jesus which is still relevant to us today. Jesus doesn’t want us to keep him to ourselves but to tell everyone about what he has done for us.

It is so easy to go along with the crowd whether it is something good or bad that they are doing. As followers of Christ however, we are called to stand out from the crowd with how we act and react to others. Through our Christ like actions we can provide a witness to our family, friends and strangers and who knows what opportunities may arise?

The passage looked at tonight by Christian Aguilera and special guest Ben Margel was 1 Corinthians 15:1-11. In this passage we get a glimpse as to how Paul evangelised those he knew about the resurrection of Christ.

1 Corinthians 15:3-4 outline four facts that we could share from the gospel and tell an interested friend.

“For what I received I passed on to you as of first importance: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, that he was buried, that he was raised on the third day according to the Scriptures.” ~ 1 Corinthians 15:3-4.

The final study for this term and our final look at the gospel of Mark. Bound and beaten, like a vio-lent criminal Jesus is lead to the governor Pilate to be charged and crucified. Jesus barely utters a word or protests to his charge or treatment, fulfilling the prophecies all so that we might be saved.

“Why? What crime has he com-mitted?” asked Pilate. But they shouted all the louder, “Crucify him!” ~ Mark 15:14.

Christian Aguilera looked at Mark 10:46-52.

“You are here because you know something. What you know you can’t explain, but, you feel it. You felt it, your entire life. There is something wrong with the world, but, you don’t know what it is. But its there like a splinter in your mind.” Morpheus to Neo – The Matrix.

As we can read in the passage even Jesus gets messy at times. Besides that he went from being a great clean God, down into a dirty, smelly human body, he now has to deal with someone pouring perfume all over his head. This perfume was not cheap perfume though, in to-day’s money it would cost around $50000. What many con-sidered as a waste, Jesus and this woman both have a deeper understanding of her act.

“She did what she could. She poured perfume on my body beforehand to prepare for my burial,” Mark 14:8.

Life can be hard, for Christians life can be very hard. The Bible does not promise that Christianity will give you an easy slide into heaven, but it does warn us and prepare us for those difficult times. No matter how bad the world gets and how hard our lives may get we need to stand firm on God’s truth to the end.

“…Everyone will hate you because of me, but the one who stands firm to the end will be saved.” – Mark 13:13

The Bible contains many laws and traditions in the Old Testament, the most important of these is the ten com-mandments set down by God that all must follow. Some of these are common sense like don’t murder, but others hold greater weight on how we should live, so which of all the laws should be the greatest?

“The most important one,” answered Jesus, “is this: ‘Hear, O Israel, the Lord our God, the Lord is one. Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength.’ The second is this: ‘Love your neighbour as your-self.’ There is no commandment greater than these.” – Mark 12:29-31

“Is it not written: ‘My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations’[a]? But you have made it ‘a den of robbers.’” – Mark 11:17.

In the passage looked at today by Youth Worship Leader, William Crank Mark 8:27-38 we see how Jesus asks his disciples a seemingly simple question, “Who do you say I am?”

To which they replied, “Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets.”

“Who do you say I am?”

To which Peter answered, “You are the Christ.”

Mark 8:28-29

Life can be full of ups and downs, sometimes life can get really hard.

For the disciples in this passage they were fighting against the wind rowing hard but not really getting anywhere.

Like the disciples we need to be careful that we are not too focused on our struggles to see Jesus walking out to help us.

When we do have times which we are struggling through we need to rememeber, “I’m not alone.”

Mark 6:50 reads, “Take Courage!… Don’t be afraid.”

I’m not Alone

The passage is a parable that Jesus told to a large crowd of people from a boat out on the lake. A parable is close to a story but is more like an obscure story that has a message behind it.

Mark 4:9 reads , ‘Then Jesus said, “He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”‘

“Don’t you understand this parable? How then will you understand any parable? The farmer sows the word. Some people are like seed along the path, where the word is sown. As soon as they hear it, Satan comes and takes away the word that was sown in them. Others, like seed sown on rocky places, hear the word and at once receive it with joy. But since they have no root, they last only a short time. When trouble or persecution comes because of the word, they quickly fall away. Still others, like seed sown among thorns, hear the word; but the worries of this life, the deceitfulness of wealth and the desires for other things come in and choke the word, making it unfruitful. Others, like seed sown on good soil, hear the word, accept it, and produce a crop—thirty, sixty or even a hundred times what was sown.“ – Mark 4:13-20.

The passage talks about “good news,” when Jesus announced his time has come.

Mark 1:15 reads, ‘“The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!”’

The Mission trip has lead 8 youths and 4 youth leaders on a journey to the middle of Queensland in a town that’s known as Mount Isa.  Which is just over 900 km from Townsville.

Northreach Youth resumes for Term 4, 7 October 2011 at 38 Canterbury Road.

This passage Jesus says, if you follow me I am the resurrection I am the life. If you follow me you will have life.
