Summer Small Groups

This summer we will be going through The Gathered AND Scattered Church together as a church-wide “small” group. Each Wednesday, we will meet in a large group session to hear a brief presentation of the previous week’s chapter. Then we will move into small, men and women discussion groups for further reflection and for prayer and sharing.

We love our summer format, because it gives everyone in our small group ministry an opportunity to come together, meet one another and be focused around one central message for a period of time. Gathered AND Scattered will also help us prepare as a church for days ahead as we seek to honor God by continuing to reach out to our communities, campuses, and even plant new gatherings and churches.

Details:

Time: Begins Wednesday June 6th at 6:00pm, and runs weekly through August 1st
Location: at the Baptist Collegiate Ministry (BCM) building
Childcare: will be provided at the Lancaster House

Summer Family Activity Book

The Village Church in Dallas, TX has created an awesome resource for parents looking to be intentional in teaching their kids about Christ this summer. The book contains activities for when families are at home, on the road, or just out in the community. Activities were created with Elementary students in mind but can be easily adapted for younger or older children.

Small Group Leader Cookout!

Attention all small group leaders! We will be meeting on Saturday May 19th at 11AM at the Lancaster House for a cookout and meeting! This will be a great time to fellowship together and celebrate what the Lord has being doing through Northstar small groups. We will also discuss the upcoming summer session, small group leader training and the fall schedule. Childcare and meat will be provided so bring your kids and a side/ dessert to share!

Internship opportunities with Northstar

Northstar is currently accepting applications for its intern program. The one-year program is designed to give participants exposure and insight to ministry and to help them discern their own unique calling to ministry and service – whether in future vocational ministry or marketplace ministry.

Our current interns are Abby Novak, Phil Cumbia, and Katie Surratt.

Northstar will be receiving applications for additional intern positions beginning June 1. It will also receive applications in August for the start of the fall semester. Interested individuals should download the intern packet and turn in the application to the church office at the Lancaster House (403 Washington).

80s Night at 3rd annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner

If you have lifted a chair, rolled a cord, babysat a child or one of a thousand things at Northstar Church we want to honor you on April 27! This night is solely to celebrate you, the volunteer for your hard work in making our church work! This year its the 80s! So dress in your 80s clothes, crimp that hair, dress up like Aerosmith (or the Stones if you prefer). Just get there!

New series: A Life to Celebrate

Beginning Sunday, April 15, our Sunday sermon series will be focusing on eight principles for wholeness and holiness called “A Life to Celebrate.” Taken from the Celebrate Recovery ministry curriculum, these biblical truths help align our lives around a love relationship with Jesus Christ and provide us with a strong foundation for ministry, relationships and missional living.

We hope you’ll be present from April 15 to June 3 for this deeply challenging perspective on godly living and surrender.

Senioritis Seminar

Graduating seniors will hear from members of Northstar’s staff about creating a personal ministry vision for their lives, implementing spiritual disciplines beyond college and how to be the church in a new context.

Palm Sunday is a special annual celebration of the week that Jesus Christ entered Jerusalem 2000 + years ago. During that tumultuous week, He healed, taught about the love of His Father and urged everyone who listened to surrender their hearts in faith. At the end of that week, He would be betrayed and then crucified. Three days later, He rose from the dead, having defeated sin and death. He now offers all peoples forgiveness, purpose and salvation.

We hope you’ll join us this Sunday for a special day of celebration at a new location – the conference center at the CRC (2280 Kraft Drive, click for map). There will be three services – 9:00 & 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. Please spread the word, invite a neighbor, friend, coworker or acquaintance! You won’t want to miss these special services of worship, encouragement, and inspiration.

For families, please note that full children’s ministries are offered only at the 9:00 a.m. service. The 11:00 a.m. offers a nursery. We love kids, and we are certain that your kids will love their Sunday experience at Northstar!

2nd Annual March Madness Day at Northstar

On Sunday, March 25, immediately following the 11:00 a.m. worship service, you’re invited to a time of fun and food over at Kipps Elementary School (located next door to BHS). For a nominal fee, we’ll be serving hot dogs, chips, soft drinks and other concession items (money will go to missions!).

Also, the Northstar leadership (staff and admin teams) will be taking on any and all comers for the second straight year. Last year, the staff dropped a close game by 2 points, after having to overcome an 18 point deficit. Come enjoy the fun and hoops! It’s an ideal afternoon for families, as kids will have access to the playground facilities at Kipps!

Lancaster House Spring Cleaning- We need YOU!

It’s time for a Lancaster House Spring Cleaning this Saturday!

Saturday, March 17th, come and go from 9AM-1PM

Come be a good steward and help thoroughly clean the Lancaster House. Many hands make light work, and you’ll have fun in the process. From dusting to mopping, bathrooms to windows, there are many tasks from which to choose - even if you only have 15 minutes to spare.

Have a knack for organization? There’s a closet just waiting for you!

Cleaning rags, buckets, soap, etc., will be provided- you bring the willing hands and spirit. And if you’re lucky, there might even be some shamrock cookies …

Gowns for Girls

Prom is one of the most important nights for a high school girl. Many girls in the New River Valley cannot afford to buy their own dress and shoes. This mission of Gowns for Girls is to provide high school girls with prom dresses and shoes that they may keep and call their own. We hope to provide girls with an opportunity to make their night memorable and look beautiful doing it. Please consider donating your old dresses and shoes. Celebrate Recovery begins February 20

After almost six months of planning, training, praying and preparing, Northstar Church is excited to offer Celebrate Recovery to our community and local campuses! CR is a Christ-centered and Bible-based recovery Program that originally began at Saddleback Church in Southern California.

So many lives have been changed by going through this recovery program. Over 700,000 people have gone through the Celebrate Recovery program in more than 17,000 churches worldwide. The purpose of this program is to focus on God’s healing power through fellowship with others and by working through the 8 Recovery Principles. Celebrate Recovery at Northstar Church is a safe place that is designed for healing life’s hurts, habits, and hang-ups!

You may think that CR is for folks with “real” problems. However, CR is for real people. We all struggle! In fact, the Bible is clear that we are all sinners. Everyone of us at moments in life encounter trials and hardships that may leave wounds or hangups. Therefore, CR is for anyone who is hurting, confused, or struggling and looking for some peace and sanity in their life.

Discipleship training class

Beginning Sunday, February 12 at the 11:00 service, we will be offering a discipleship training class for anyone interested in learning more about the process of making disciples. It will be led by Adam Wilson (click here to contact him with questions). It’s a six-week class, and the cost is $15 for the workbook that you will be using.

New Series in February: 100% – All In

Beginning February 5, Northstar will enter into a new 4-week teaching series called 100% – All In. It’s an examination of what it means to be a biblical steward. You’ll be surprised and encouraged at how gracious and good and liberal our God is in blessing His people.

The outline for the series is as follows:

The Body of a Steward – February 12
The Relationships of a Steward – February 19
The Purse (or Man-Purse) of a Steward – February 26

Don’t miss this helpful and enlightening series! Northstar’s Stewardship Team is also working to develop some practical and creative ways that Northstar can respond to the series at its conclusion.

Luke Celebration and Testimony Service

We started studying the Gospel of Luke in January of 2010. We completed the study on January 15, 2012! What an amazing time it’s been in this rich gospel as we’ve learned about the character and audacious love of God in Jesus Christ.

On Sunday, January 29, join us in our three services for a special time of celebration, praise and testimonies. We encourage you to read back through Luke in preparation for this week! Come prepared to share about a passage that has encouraged or spoken deeply to you over these past two years of study.

It will be a perfect time for guests to hear how God is shaping His church and still speaking to His people today!

Financial Peace University starts January 30

Northstar is excited to offer once again Financial Peace University to the community! This year’s emphasis is “The Great Recovery,” and through the class, you will receive practical tools and personal encouragement to take control of your money and begin putting it to good use – for you, others, and ultimately the Lord.

This 13-week program will help you change not just your management but your attitude toward money. It takes the knowledge from God and turns it into real action in our lives through a step-by-step process taught by best-selling author and financial counselor Dave Ramsey. The course includes practical lessons on eliminating debt, building wealth, giving like never before, and much, much more!

State of the Church 2012

Sunday, January 22 will be an exciting day for the Northstar family. We’ll celebrate our annual State of the Church Sunday as we look back in thanksgiving and celebration to what our Lord has done in us and through us in 2011. We’ll also prayerfully look forward to what He is calling us toward in faith. Also that Sunday, we’ll move back to two services – 9:00 and 11:00 a.m.

Our annual State of the Church Sundays are wonderful times to invite people to experience heartfelt worship and to hear about the direction God is leading our church.

Please be in prayer for that day as we exalt our God who has given us salvation and a mission in Christ!

What A Year Its Been

Every year about this time I start thinking about how crazy it is that another year has come and gone. How is it that time can go by so fast? And it goes by especially fast now that I have kids.

So in reflection I just wanted to put down some of the highlights in Children’s Ministry this year. We have done some really fun stuff! And all glory to God that we were able to pull it off!

We began last year uncertain of what would happen with our Jumpstart classroom. We were losing some faithful servants as teachers, our curriculum was no longer applicable, and we were uncertain how to manage having classes for the Elementary kids at 2 different services. Although it is still a work in progress, God has blessed us with some amazing new teachers and assistants, a wonderful new curriculum and a classroom to house it all at the high school.

We had two baby dedications in 2011. Eight families committed to raising their children God’s way with help from their Northstar family. We were so excited to see a baby boom in late Summer and Fall and began to recruit more workers for the Nursery! And they keep coming! More babies are due in 2012!

Over the summer we challenged our families to get to know their neighbors, coworkers and friends and invite them to a picnic at the end of the summer. The picnic at Hand in Hand park and our pool party at the Shawnee Pool were lots of fun.

We had a Northstar family night at Chick-fil-A and enjoyed some yummy food together in October. We also gathered at Sinkland Farms to watch some pumpkin flinging and pick one of our own. In November we collected over 106 boxes for Operation Christmas Child and in December we had a Family Fun Day and made edible nativities.

And in the midst of big events there were the most important things to remember of all: the parents who prayed over their babies, the mamas who asked God for wisdom as they taught their children at home, and the dads who dealt daily with ungodly coworkers in a godly way. The kids who made their teachers uncomfortable by telling other kids about Jesus and inviting friends to church. The boy who told his parents, “I am fantastic!” after learning Psalm 139:14. Or the girl who went home and washed her whole families’ feet after studying John 13. These are moments worth celebrating!

So tonight at the end of this 2011 year I am thankful to call you all family and to know that you are running beside me toward the same goal of bringing God glory! I hope it has been a wonderful year for you and I pray the best for your families in 2012!

Merry Christmas!

What a great year..

What an amazing year 2011 has been in our fellowship! Consider the following:
We grew from an average attendance of 275 (school year) to 350. Our high attendance Sunday was in September, when we had 472 in two services! We began a third service at 6:00 pm, and it has averaged 50 people. Some of the most exciting news this year has been the transformation we’ve seen in lives. So many have given their hearts in faith to Christ! We have rejoiced as they and others have expressed their faith in obedience through baptism. We’ve seen 39 people baptized in 2011!

Also this year, you as the church have traveled to Spain to minister with an unreached people group called the Basque. Northstar sent a team to a Christian camp in the wilds of Alaska to assist with renovations. Our small groups have been active as they’ve grown in number and influence. Our service teams have helped with local food closets and tornado cleanup. With all the activity, we’re pledged to keep the gospel of Christ central as we serve others. As we reflect on this past year, we’re overjoyed with all that Christ is doing in our midst!

We are humbled by the challenges that we feel God has given us for the days ahead. Some of them include planting a new church in southwest Virginia, mobilizing our people and resources to establish a ministry to an unreached people group, planning for future worship locations for our growing congregation, and calling new ministers on board our staff team to serve in vital areas of strategic ministry.

Announcing the Parent Partner ministry…

If you are the parent of a college or grad student in Blacksburg, we’d love to invite you to consider our Parent Partners ministry as an option for your involvement. One of our church’s great joys is our intentional ministry to students. They come in so many forms in Blacksburg – collegians (from three area colleges: VT, Radford and New River Valley Community College), graduate students (both master’s and doctoral), and medical school students. While the summers are relatively quiet, traffic swells and the energy level of the community vibrates with enthusiasm as August begins.

Ministry to students is a delight and a challenge. They arrive in Blacksburg with such high hopes for life, career and relationships. Unfortunately, many get sidetracked, and experience heartache, broken dreams and shallow friendships. It’s a formative and crucial time for these young adults. Some choose to abandon faith, while others embrace it for the first time.

Northstar is a people who want to not only ease this life transition, but we want to lead others to find their ultimate joy and fulfillment in a love relationship with God through faith in Jesus Christ while they are here in Blacksburg.

Northstar loves students, and we’ve seen our church experience significant growth in the past two years as students have flocked to Northstar. They don’t just attend; they get intricately involved in ministry and service with us. We’ve grown from one Sunday worship service to three in the past year, and we are eager to keep providing ministry and discipleship for all those that the Lord brings to Northstar.

Our Parent Partner ministry is for parents of students who desire to assist our church in its ministry to their students and friends. It’s an opportunity for parents to contribute to our ongoing ministries and help reach our campuses and communities with the gospel of Christ, lead them to spiritual maturity and equip them for further ministry and service in our world.

Christiansburg Parade

Tonight is the night! If you missed the Blacksburg parade we really just feel a little sorry for you because it was so much fun! We had such a blast handing candy canes and playing music for the Blacksburg community, and I guess they enjoyed it to because Northstar Church took home top prize and won the float contest!

But wait, there is good news! Tonight we will be doing a repeat parade performance in Christiansburg! Do not make the same mistake twice, if you are part of Northstar and want to walk with us, meet as at the Hardees on Roanoke Street at 5:30p. The parade starts at 7:00pm, so if you just want to be in the crowd and support us come on out!

Holiday Missions Offering

Christmas is a time for us to model the heart of God in giving to others, and we want to humbly ask you to give to our Holiday Missions Offering during December Nights. We will begin collecting the HMO on Sunday, December 11,but you can give to it throughout the month of December.

This is such a wonderful opportunity for us to show our love and gratitude to Christ by giving so that His gospel may be declared around our world, beginning in Blacksburg! While we don’t have a goal for the offering, here is how we will be using what our church family gives:

25% of it to the existing missions and ministries that we support
25% of it to local outreach projects
50% to the Lottie Moon Christmas offering (100% of that goes directly to overseas missionaries through the International Mission Board).

We want to encourage you to please sit down with your friends, family and spouse and prayerfully make this year’s offering a matter of creative, surrendered prayer.

You can begin bringing the amount that you have purposed in your heart to give to December Nights on Sunday, December 11. You can also give online at our MyCharityBox site; look for the “Holiday Missions Offering” link at the bottom of the page.

Christiansburg Christmas Parade Details

Beginning at 10am tomorrow (Friday December 9th) anyone who has some free time can stop by the Lancaster House and help prep over 2,000 candy canes that we will hand out as another way to interact with and reach out to our community during the parade.

If you would like to join us in the parade we will be rallying at the Hardee’s (103 Roanoke St. Christiansburg, VA 24073-3019) at 5:30 pm. Blacksburg residents can meet at the Lancaster House at 5:00pm to carpool over together. If you would like to wear one of our red Northstar hoodies, please bring $10.

Following the parade, which starts at 7:00pm, we will head to the home of Buddy & Janet Benford for hot chocolate/cider & cookies in order to thaw out.

Blacksburg Christmas parade

On Friday night, December 2, we celebrated the joy of Christmas with our community in the Blacksburg Christmas parade. Our float featured members of the Northstar praise band, kids and candy canes! It was exciting to meet so many of our neighbors!

Thanks to those who made the float possible with all the work and donations of materials! We will also be in the Christiansburg Christmas parade on Friday, December 9.

Free childcare for parents for Christmas

Operation Christmas Child Update

This year Northstar once again participated in the Samaritan’s Purse Operation Christmas Child. This project was created to give children who may otherwise never receive a gift at Christmas more than just a gift of a material box of toys and goodies. The children also receive a book in their own language that presents the gospel and in many places a class to teach them more about the bible.

The grand total contribution from Northstar was 106 BOXES!

December Nights has become somewhat of a tradition around Northstar. During the month of December we don’t have Sunday morning church. We move everything to the evening. Yes, you read that right. We don’t meet on Sunday mornings in the month of December!

It will be our third December to celebrate the gift of God in Christ during December Nights! We will focus on our theme of Rest. Reflect. Rejoice. Renew. It’s a beautiful time of year to refocus our spirits on He who makes all things new. Jesus Christ is our first, great and eternal love.

Our hope for our church and its guests over the next few weeks is that we clearly portray and declare Jesus as the Light and Hope of the world.

Missions Team is forming

Northstar is excited about the months as we begin to mobilize our members and attenders to embrace personal responsibility for sharing the message of Christ with the nations. Simply stated, our goal is to become a “sending” church.

The Missions Team will identify areas of the world for Northstar to focus its missions ministry to – through prayer, sending members and resources. It will seek to inform and equip the membership of Northstar as to the best strategies and biblical methods to share the gospel of Christ with the peoples to whom we seek to serve.

It will also seek to enlist and mobilize members of Northstar to personally go to the nations through both short-term trips and vocational mission ministry.

To Our House Service Opportunity

This December, we will have another opportunity to partner with the To Our House program, which means we need individuals, families, and small groups to step up to help with this amazing ministry. From December 3rd-17th, Fieldstone UMC will be housing anywhere from 10-12 men who otherwise would be homeless. Northstar’s primary role is to provide the meals (breakfast, lunch, and dinner) for these men during their stay at Fieldstone.

Missions Sunday

Our annual celebration of being on mission for the glory of God will be next Sunday, November 13. On the Sunday, we will have ONE SERVICE at 10:00 a.m.! It will be a very special Sunday as we hear stories from Northstar members about their experiences on mission this past year. You’ll get to hear from some who went to Spain, Alaska, and other areas of our world.

Due to our growing size, we will be meeting in the VT Corporate Research Center conference building! It will be a fantastic opportunity for you to invite friends, classmates, neighbors and coworkers to experience and hear what it looks like a unified group of Christians to take seriously being the church in our world!

After our missions celebration service, we will eat lunch together! Details are still being hammered out, but for the low cost of $6 per person (kids 5 and under will eat free), you will be able to enjoy a great meal and hear from other ministries that Northstar has partnered with! Don’t miss out on this special day!

Refresh: College Night

We are back for the last ‘Refresh’ of the fall semester. We are going to end it with a bang! We will have frozen yogurt provided by the new kid in town ‘Frosty Parrot.’ This evening is going to be a great stepping stone for your friends who are not involved in church or really have no concept of church culture. It will be really laid back evening just hanging out and eating some frozen yogurt, and hearing from Virginia Tech QB Logan Thomas about Christ and how that comes into play with him being an athlete.

Christmas Parade Opportunity

The Christmas season is rapidly approaching, which means it is also almost time for local the “Holiday” parades. This year we will be participating in the Blacksburg (Friday, December 2nd) and Christiansburg (Friday, December 9th) Christmas parades for another opportunity give the community a glimpse of who Northstar is as the Church.

We need plenty of people to help with not only the building of the float, but to also help participate in each parade. There will be an interest meeting next Sunday November 6th immediately following each service in the cafeteria area of the school. Live Sent: A Missional Conversation Event

We have an opportunity to spend an evening with Jason Dukes next week, on Wednesday, October 26. Jason is a dynamic thinker and missional church mobilizer. He’s a pastoral leader at Westpoint Church and is the author of the provocative book called Live Sent.

We know this is a little “last minute,” but these dates are what he had available for us that work. We hope that you’ll consider attending with your small group. We are confident that you’ll be encouraged and challenged to think differently about “being the church.” We’ll also make sure that there is an opportunity for Q&A and feedback. The overall format is just 90 minutes. The place will be announced soon. Stay tuned here and on our Facebook page.

Here’s what we want to accomplish:

A fun “joint fellowship” time for all of our small groups
A deepening encounter as we are challenged to think about what “being the church” means
An opportunity to hear someone who is helping churches embrace missional living

Baby Dedication Recap

On Sunday, October 16th five families committed to raising their children in Godly homes. Praise the Lord! Six children were dedicated during the 9:00 service among family and friends. The service was followed by a reception for the families and a time to get to know one another. We are so grateful for the way God is growing our church and so excited to be partnering with these families in the spiritual development of their children.

“Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.” Deut. 6:5-7

Two years ago, Shane & Shane and Phil Wickham came to Virginia Tech to help kick off our December Nights, and they are coming back again! Mark it on your calendars, and spread the word! Help with Northstar’s carpool ministry

If you haven’t heard, this semester Northstar is having a carpool service for students on campus from the Lancaster House for both the 9:00 am service and the 11:00 am service to Blacksburg High School. This is super exciting because more students who would not otherwise be coming to church at Northstar are now able to get a ride. It truly has been an awesome ministry so far, and each week more students show up needing a ride.

We desperately need people to volunteer to drive! I can’t drive everyone in one load in my car, which is so cool that it’s even a problem! But at this point, I am having to go to both services and sometimes taking two trips… as you can imagine, it’s just not the most convenient thing to have to do this.

Reasons to help:

It’s an awesome way to meet new students and get them connected to Northstar
It’s only like 15 minutes earlier than you would be going anyways
It will help YOU get more involved with Northstar too
You can invite them to lunch afterwards and get to know them more!

I am going to try to figure out a driver schedule, so you can just volunteer once a month, or more if you can. We need 2 drivers for 9:00 am and maybe 3 for 11:00 am. If there’s a specific Sunday in October or November that you would like to help, let me know that too.

What you would need to do:

Notify me (email below), and I’ll assign you a Sunday.
For the 9:00 am service, meet at Lancaster at 8:40ish
For the 11:00 am service: meet there at 10:40ish
and don’t forget they’ll need a ride back to campus too!

We invite you to join in on what God is doing in Blacksburg and at Virginia Tech Please reply with what service, what Sunday and how many Sundays you would like to help, how many empty seats you have free, and your cell number! Also, let me know if you can think of others that would be interested in driving, and pass the word along to students who might need a ride to church!

If you come to the 9:00 a.m. service, you’ll be in for a special treat this week as we witness some special families dedicating their children to the Lord. It’s a wonderful time for our church to encourage parents as they seek to bring up their children in a way that honors and exalts Christ.

There will be a fun reception for the families that you’re invited to participate in immediately after the 9:00 service in the cafeteria area.

In addition, we will have a baptism service between the two morning services – approximately 10:45 a.m. Don’t miss this exciting testimony of all that God is doing in the lives of people in our community and campuses!

Sunday, October 9 is Northstar’s annual celebration of membership! Each year, all of our members reaffirm their desire to be a part of the mission and ministry of our church by renewing their membership covenants. As a covenant membership church, Northstar desires that our membership be meaningful. As we encourage one another to not just go to church but to be the church, this annual membership renewal reminds us that being members of a church means actively following Jesus with our lives.

On this special Sunday, we will be sharing our Discovering Northstar material in all three services – 9:00 & 11:00 a.m. and 6:00 p.m. This membership material will encourage members and those who have been considering membership since it highlights the vision, values and ministry direction of Northstar.

It’s a perfect Sunday to celebrate with us what God is doing in and through the lives of the people of Northstar. We invite you to participate and to join our church as we prepare for serving the Lord together over the next year!

Ministry opportunity: tornado cleanup Sept 24

Intern applications open up

Northstar is opening up more applications for our intern program. It’s a year program that is designed to give participants exposure and insight to ministry and to help them discern their own unique calling to ministry and service – whether in future vocational ministry or marketplace ministry.

Our current interns are Abby Novak, Phil Cumbia, Ar Moehrle, and Jacob Moyer.

Northstar will be receiving applications for additional intern positions through the end of September. Interested individuals should download the intern packet and turn in the application to the church office at the Lancaster House (403 Washington).

On October 16th we will be having a Baby Dedication at Northstar. This will take place during the 9:00 service. We view this as a time for Parents to partner with Northstar in a commitment to spiritual leadership for their kids. We know it can seem daunting, and we want to help get you off on the right foot!

Attendance to our Parent Orientation is necessary before the Dedication service. The Orientation will take place on Oct. 2nd during the 11:00 service.

Children’s ministry opportunities!

Ever wonder where all the kids are on Sunday mornings? Our children’s programs take place at the 9:00 am service each Sunday. Babies through 5th graders are being taught each week about God’s love for them.

Kids 0-5 years old use a curriculum published by the ReThink Group called First Look. This curriculum is designed to give kids their first look at God. Each week we focus on one of three basic truths: God Made Me, God Loves Me, and Jesus Wants to Be My Friend Forever! We use fun activities and catchy worship music to reinforce the lessons. The kids (and teachers!) can’t help but have a good time!

Our Jumpstart class is for K-5th graders. This group is currently using a curriculum from Standard Publishing called Route 52. Their current topics are Jesus’ Teachings and Discipleship. These kids are eager to learn and excited to share the gospel with childlike abandon. They also have a worship band! Kid-led and mother-approved!

Are you looking for a way to make a little extra cash this semester? Local MOPS groups are looking for quality childcare for their groups. They need dependable Christian workers to provide a safe and fun atmosphere for children.

MOPS exists to support and equip Mothers of Preschoolers to realize their full potential as women, mothers and leaders in the name of Jesus Christ. Having childcare available for these moms during their meetings is a huge blessing and a much needed break for many women. We are excited to announce that on Sunday, September 11, we will offer a THIRD SERVICE at 6:00 p.m. at BHS (same place as the morning services)!! God is at work in our communities and campuses! We want to offer more opportunities for those who may not be able to participate on Sunday mornings and for those who God will bring to experience joyful Christian community in our church family. Youth group and small group for parents!

This semester, come along with the Youth of Northstar as they learn the 10 essentials that are needed for this trail called the Christian life. They will learn about 10 essentials that will increase their faith and realize the joy of following the Lord. There will be topics like faith, authority, purity, and devotion. Trail Runners will meet at the Lancaster House on Wednesday nights from 7:00-8:30, beginning September 7. Please invite your friends and spread the word!

ATTENTION PARENTS!
This trail of life is not just for youth. Parents of youth will meet at the same time as the youth at Jeff and Carolyn Noble’s house, Wednesdays from 7:00-8:30 at 204 Heartwood Crossing. There will be a coordinating lesson each week for parents to help leave a faith legacy. This will be refreshing for the parents’ faith as well and will help raise them to use the 10 essentials along the path of life.

On September 7, we both youth and parents will meet together at Lancaster house for a fun evening of food, games and introductions!!

Cru’s heart is to see VT students come to know Jesus as their Lord and Savior, grow in their faith and then be sent all over the world as followers of Jesus for the rest of their lives. Report from International Furniture Giveaway

Here is a brief report on last Saturday’s (8/13) International Furniture Giveaway at the Baptist Collegiate Ministries building. We thank God for another successful event, and we thank you for your service! The weather was good, and we were able to give almost everyone who came two pieces of furniture (one large and one small). Over 300 pieces of furniture were selected, loaded and delivered in less than four hours.

At 7:30 am, 133 students and scholars entered the building. Eventually, 167 students and scholars received furniture. The recipients came from 11 nations, with PR China (99, 59%) and India (56, 34%) as the largest groups. The other nations included Nepal (2), Vietnam (2), Thailand (2), Germany (1), Guatemala (1), Malaysia (1), Brazil (1), Sweden (1), and Venezuela (1).

We’re grateful for your help this year! It’s an incredibly practical way to demonstrate the love of God to the nations.

Youth ministry: Tubing on the New River this Sunday!

This sunday our youth group will be going tubing at New River Junction. Feel free
to invite your friends and come tubing with us!

DETAILS:

We will be meeting at Blacksburg High School at 1:00 to go tubing. That should give us enough time to tear down and grab a quick lunch.
The liability forms can be downloaded from http://www.newriverjunction.com (Please try to have these filled out ahead of time to speed up the process).
The cost is $9 for adult tubes, $7 for child tubes. Parents are definitely welcome to come hang out with us.

There will be some hard copies of the liability forms at the services this Sunday for under-18 that don’t have them. In the meantime, contact Dave, dave@northstarfamily.org for more information.

‘The house, owned by the YMCA in Blacksburg, was donated by longtime resident Lucy Lancaster to the YMCA and served as that group’s headquarters from 1990 until 2009, when the nonprofit organization moved into the remodeled Wades Supermarket on North Main Street.’

Lucy Lancaster was one of the first five women admitted to Tech in 1921, and she left her estate to the YMCA in 1989.

When the YMCA moved down to North Main Street, Northstar stumbled across it and recognized it’s ministry potential and immediately took the lease. Now, the Lancaster House is used as Northstars Ministry Center and houses the offices upstairs.

Downstairs is a different story. They wanted to keep it open for students and families alike to come and hang out. There is always coffee brewing (www.drinkcoffeedogood.com) and the free wifi is sure to keep you stopping by. If you don’t have a place to meet a friend feel free to drop by the house and use the front porch rockers, the back yard patio or any of the rooms inside! We would love to have you.

Back to School Bash!

and board games to play, some awesome music, and FOOD! If your child is entering Kindergarten through

Two Services

Fall is just around the corner! Because of that we will be going back to our 2 service format. Don’t worry, there will still be coffee and breakfast goodies served at both services.

Again, please do not forget that on August 21st we will be going back to two services at 9am and 11am. We will have children’s ministry during the 9am service; the 11am service will have a nursery available as well.

Hi everyone!

Just a quick reminder that our community picnic is THIS SUNDAY at Hand and Hand Park in Blacksburg. We will head over after service with the goal of getting there at noon.
Please bring hotdogs, buns and a simple side enough for your family and enough to share with another!

We will have a cooler at the church on Sunday morning for you to put cold items in if needed.

Also, if you have lawn chairs or picnic blankets bring those.

We are excited to get to know each other better and to welcome in new friends from the community at this event!

More furniture needed.. August 13 coming soon!

Greetings!

The International Furniture Giveaway is only 15 days away (August 13), and the showroom still has lots of empty space! Spread the word – We need more furniture.

This weekend (July 29-30) is a big weekend for free furniture as many leases end and furniture is discarded. It’s surprising what people will set out at dumpsters. Also, the “free stuff” on craigslist should be more plentiful this week. If you have the time and means, perhaps you can find some free stuff and bring it to the BCM. The BCM will open during the week and on Saturday.

Of course, not all free stuff is desirable. We need particular types of items that are decent. See the following announcement for the types of furniture we need.

EXTRA FURNITURE? We could use it! We are teaming with Baptist Collegiate Ministries (BCM) to collect and give away furniture to new international students. Your donations will help us minister to international students and scholars coming in the fall. We accept almost any type of furniture, but we cannot accept mattresses or sofa beds. Desks, tables, sofas, bookshelves and chairs are especially popular. If you would like to donate furniture, please contact the BCM at 552-5473 to arrange drop-off, or pick-up if needed. There are many other ways to help at the actual giveaway event on August 13!

Discovering Northstar is a relaxed, informative evening (usually about 90 minutes) for those who are wanting to learn more information about our church. It’s a required step for membership, but participation doesn’t obligate you to join.

You’ll learn about our vision, values and hope of “being the church” so that our community and world will discover the love of Jesus Christ. You’ll get a sense of our family environment which encourages spiritual growth and welcomes people at any level and from any background.

Steppin Out

Northstar will be at Steppin’ Out August 5th & 6th. We will be handing out some Icee Pops to help cool down the shoppers and other vendors and also inviting them to come join us on Sunday mornings.

Steppin’ Out features over 185 artists and crafts people from around the United States selling unique handcrafted items – jewelry, pottery, textiles, metal work, basketry, stained & fused glass, yard art, fine art, furniture, toys, artisan foods and so much more!

Downtown Blacksburg merchants also hold their much-awaited final clearance sidewalk sales during Steppin’ Out. And those festival foods you love are provided by downtown restaurants.

Admission is free! Town of Blacksburg metered parking is all free and Blacksburg Transit provides free shuttles to get you there without the hassles. Bring your friends! Bring your family!

To give a lot of Icee Pops out we will need your help! Click here to volunteer for a time slot to man the booth. It isn’t a hard job. We just need you to be friendly, cut the top of the Icee Pop and hand them out!

On Sunday June 26th, Northstar will host its 2nd annual Shawnee Pool Night! This was a big hit last year and lots of fun for everyone. We will gather to swim, splash and play some pool games. Bring floaties and a poolside snack from 7:00-9:00pm. This will be a great way to invite a friend to get to know our Northstar family!

FaithGirlz mission trip, June 26-July 1

Some of of our younger Northstar girls will be leaving next weekend for the Pre-teen Week of Hope mission trip. They will be traveling to Charleston, SC for a week of mission work.

Charleston is historically a beautiful city, but there are still many people that are struggling to get by from hurricane damage and on limited resources. Campers will be directly involved in helping the elderly at their homes, children’s camps and nonprofit organizations that are focused on creating opportunities for lives to be improved.

FaithGirlz is currently led by Wendy Kendall and is for girls in the 5th-6th grades. They meet on Monday nights. Contact Wendy at wendyk413@yahoo.com for more information.

If you’re at Regal Movie Theater in Christiansburg this summer, you’ll notice that Northstar has a promotional table there with our information about our church in the lobby. We are a sponsor of the “Summer Movie Express” which is a family-friendly movie program on Tuesdays and Wednesdays at 10 a.m. each week through August 10. The movies are only $1 during the summer, and the informational poster is included below.

It’s our pleasure to be a co-sponsor, and we hope that our message of “Be the church” will be seen by many and will be used by the Lord to bring new families and faces to our fellowship and to faith in the next few months!

Our Alaska team, consisting of Bob & Julia Bowen, Dave Farris, Joe Cline, Josh Moehrle and Kevin Fickes leaves Friday, June 10. They’re bound for the wild interior of Alaska as they prepare to assist Kokrine Hills Bible Camp with construction and preparation for camps this summer.

Things you can do:

Follow them on their blog.
Pray daily for them and the other churches from the lower 48 that they will be working with.
Pray for the staff and workers at the camp as they minister in the name of Jesus this summer to children from all over Alaska.

Summer small groups start June 22

Northstar’s summer small group ministry starts the week of June 20! They’re going to be a great time of fellowship and learning about biblical discipleship.

What does it look like to make a disciple?
What does it look like to be a disciple?
When do we arrive at spiritual maturity?
How can a person become a part of a the discipleship process?
How can a church consistently raise up mature disciples?

Most of our summer groups will meet on Wednesdays at 6:30pm. Men will meet at the BCM; women will meet at the Lancaster House on Washington Street. Childcare will be provided at the Lancaster House. The groups will meet for 6 weeks, starting on June 22 and ending on July 27.

Each week will start with a 20 minute introduction to the evening’s focus, and it will be followed by breakout sessions for discussion, prayer, and application relevant to that week’s material.

We will be using material based on Real-Life Discipleship by Jim Putnam. You won’t want to miss these special weeks of emphasis on biblical discipleship! Northstar’s small group ministry is designed to help build friendships and encourage one another as we seek to live life in love with God and people. This summer will be a fantastic opportunity to grow relationally and spiritually!

On Saturday, June 4, the Northstar Worship Band is playing a concert at Dublin Baptist Church starting at 7:00pm! The concert is part of Dublin Baptist’s Summer Celebration event. Prior to the concert, there will also be a spaghetti supper fundraiser from 4-6:30pm sponsored by the Dublin Baptist Youth to raise money for summer camp. On June 18th, we will be holding a yard sale at the Lancaster House from 8:00a – 2:00p. If you have some stuff that is just taking up space in your house and you want to get rid of we will take it! What a continued joy it is to celebrate new life and obedience! We will be having a baptism service the next two weeks, between the 9:00 and 11:00 a.m. services.

While we already have some candidates for baptism, if you or a family member are interested in being baptized this week, please contact us. We’d love to be able to celebrate with you as you follow Jesus Christ in obedience.

It’s always a joyful occasion when we baptize people as they express their obedience and devotion to Jesus being the Lord of their life! Make sure to prioritize this special service on your calendar so we can exalt Him together and encourage those being baptized.

Northstar announces intern program

After the past year of ministry and training in its first experience with an intern, Northstar is beginning an intern program. It’s a year program that is designed to give participants exposure and insight to ministry and to help them discern their own unique calling to ministry and service – whether in future vocational ministry or marketplace ministry.

With a goal of selecting 3-5 interns, Northstar will be receiving applications through the summer of 2011. Interested individuals should download the intern packet and turn in the application to the church office at the Lancaster House (403 Washington).

Easter Sunday services

“Why are you looking among the dead for someone who is alive? He isn’t here! He is risen from the dead! Remember what he told you back in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be betrayed into the hands of sinful men and be crucified, and that he would rise again on the third day.” (Luke 24:6-7)

Northstar joyfully declares the resurrection of Jesus as the centerpoint of our faith and hope. Easter Sunday in the 1st century marked the end of about 36 hours of mourning, confusion and silence of those who had hoped Jesus was the Messiah of Israel. His gory death had stunned and humiliated them.

However, with these words from angels to a frightened group of women on the morning after the Jewish sabbath, angels announced to the world what Christians through the millennia have believed in faith based on evidence. Jesus Christ rose from the dead!

Come celebrate his life with us this Sunday!

Egg hunt between services on Easter Sunday

We will be having an Easter Egg Hunt between the two services on Sunday (approx. 10:40 am). Please bring a basket or something for your child to collect eggs in.

Also, please be aware that we will be hunting “Resurrection Eggs”. These eggs contain items that help tell the story of Jesus’ journey to the cross. There will be slips of paper inside each egg to tell what the item symbolizes, but you may want to prepare children that not all the eggs will contain candy. They will also be reading the story of resurrection eggs in class at 9:00.

We’re having a special fellowship service followed by a lunch on May 1. There will only be one service – at 10 a.m. Please help communicate that to your small groups. It will be a perfect time to invite friends, folks from your cohort, coworkers or neighbors!

After the service, we’ll be having a fellowship lunch together! We will having a “potluck” with the sides and desserts. Please help us make sure we have enough by signing up here to bring a side or dessert!

After lunch, there will be a basketball game in the gym featuring Northstar staff vs. whomever! Don’t miss out on this fun day intended to help you meet one another and enjoy the fellowship of our incredible church family.

Good Friday Service

Our Good Friday service is this Friday Night at 6:30 pm at War Memorial Chapel. We’d love to have you participate in this deeply meaningful worship and memorial event as we reflect on the crucifixion of Jesus Christ. We will be observing the Lord’s Supper together during this abbreviated service.

Childcare for 5 and under is available at the Lancaster House, but please contact hannah@northstarfamily.org if you plan on using it for your child so we will be prepared. Parking is available at the Lancaster House and also next door at the Latter Day Saints ministry building. First come, first served on parking!
