Northumberland’s outstanding junior Lucy Dodd recently won the U19 National Women’s Doubles title, and has had a number of other excellent tournament successes. Lucy is having a superb season, and during the last couple of weeks has been representing England in the U19 European Team and Individual Championships in Ibiza. There is a report on the Team Event on Badminton England’s website. In the individual event, Lucy and her partner drew the second seeds in the Mixed Doubles first round, and they were too strong for the English pair. In the Girls Doubles, Lucy and her partner reached the last 16, losing to a strong Danish pair. This was still a great achievement. This has all been an excellent experience for Lucy as she has another year in this U19 age group. Well done Lucy!!

The second piece of news concerns Andy Craigie, from Deaf Awareness NE. Andy has gradually become more integrated into clubs and has been playing in a few different clubs to gain experience and to help him improve. A number of weeks ago Andy went to Milton Keynes to take part in the Deaflympics weekend. Following that, he has just heard that he has been selected to represent England in the European Deaf Championships in Brno in the Czech Republic, from 25 to 27 April next year!!! I doubt whether we have ever had any deaf player reach this level in the North East!! It has been really encouraging to see Andy (sometimes with his partner Josh) integrating more, in clubs, at the NBA Presentation Evening, and also recently at the Sport Newcastle Dinner. Andy may well be seen practicing at the Tyneside Badminton Centre! Congratulations to Andy!!!

The first North Tyneside Social Badminton tournament of the season took place on Sunday 13th October in the sports hall at John Spence Community High School, North Shields. It was great to see an increased entry of 54 players, some of whom travelled from Morpeth and south of the River Tyne to take part. 34 male and 20 female players took part, with an age range of 17 to 70!! It is so good to see such a wide age range of players competing together and having fun, in an excellent, friendly atmosphere. The tournament was once again organised and run by the superb volunteers from Bewicke Badminton Club, which plays in the school sports hall on Tuesday and Friday evenings during the season, and also runs a summer club, assisted by other volunteer helpers from North Tyneside Badminton Partnership.

Whilst there were a number of participants who have taken part in previous tournaments, it was really good to see a good number of new players taking part for the first time. Whilst some previous winners were again successful, notably Simon Entwistle, Jessica Dyson and Mark Armstrong, it was particularly pleasing to see some new players collect trophies.

Initial games were played in groups in all events, followed by semi-finals and finals. All winners and runners up received trophies, presented by Paul Harrison and Tournament Secretary Viv Harmer of Bewicke BC. Simon Entwistle was a double winner, just winning the Men’s Doubles final 21-20!!

This was yet another highly successful, well organised and enjoyable social tournament. The atmosphere was very friendly indeed. Players were most grateful to the tournament organisers and helpers. Hopefully the next tournament will be in March/April next year.

RESULTS OF FINALS:

LADIES DOUBLES

Mrugaya Mulay and Emma Curtis defeated Kathryn Armstrong and Jess Dyson 21-7

MEN’S DOUBLES

Simon Entwistle and Mark Armstrong defeated Eduard Diosalan and Kristiane Timbang 21-20

Norma Waterfield – NBA Secretary since 1997, and a member of the NBA Management Committee since the mid-1980s, Norma has run numerous different events with husband Mike over the years, including the international Under 19 Tournament and Team Event, and served (with Mike) as the Badminton England Development Officer for 5 years. She has also achieved a lot in North Tyneside. Norma represented the County over a long period – 24 years, and played when Northumberland had Derek Talbot and Elliott Stuart on the team and played in the top division.

Russell and Norma received their awards from Dennis Gray in the absence of Ian Little of Yehlex who was unable to attend for the first time.

Following these awards there were two more special awards. Recently Sport Newcastle held their Unsung Heroes Awards Evening. Ellen Davison was successfully nominated for a Young Unsung Heroes Award and on the night received her award from Russell Perry! Once again Russell did the honours so that Ellen could be recognised at the Presentation Evening. Ellen has been an outstanding young volunteer and has worked her way through coaching awards. Russell also presented Alison Thompson with her Unsung Heroes Award – Alison was unable to attend the actual Sport Newcastle ceremony. Alison has been a member of the Management Committee since 1993 and League Secretary since 2009. She is also a Senior County Selector. Alison has also been Secretary of Elmfield BC for very many years. Both of these volunteers thoroughly deserved their awards.

The second North Tyneside Social Badminton tournament of the season took place recently in the sports hall at John Spence Community High School, North Shields. It attracted 40 players, some of whom travelled from Morpeth and south of the River Tyne to take part. The tournament was once again organised and run by the excellent volunteers from Bewicke BC, which plays in the school sports hall on Tuesday and Friday evenings during the season, and also runs a summer club, assisted by volunteer helpers from North Tyneside Badminton Partnership.

Whilst there were a number of participants who have taken part in previous tournaments, it was good to see some new players taking part for the first time. It was especially good to see competing for the very first time, two deaf players!! Deaf Awareness North East is a member of the North Tyneside Badminton Partnership, which has been supporting this organisation since it joined the Partnership. To help the 2 deaf players, who were accompanied by their coach and an interpreter, flipchart scoreboards were provided by the Partnership. These were very well used and were much appreciated by all players, not just the two deaf players.

Initial games were played in groups in the Men’s and Mixed Doubles events, which had respectively 13 and 11 pairs taking part, followed by semi-finals and finals. The 5 pairs in the Ladies Doubles event played each other in order to determine the winners and runners up. All winners and runners up received glass trophies, presented by Paul Harrison of Bewicke BC. Jessica Dyson and Monika Prezch were once again victorious in the Ladies Doubles, after winning the event in the October tournament. Simon Entwistle and Jessica likewise once again won the Mixed Doubles! Simon almost became a double winner, just losing the Men’s Doubles final 20-21!!

Andy Craigie, one of the two deaf players, said afterwards “We did enjoy ourselves, despite losing every game! It was a good opportunity and new experience for us both and we are keen on returning to the next tournament, hope we manage to win at least some games! I do hope we get more of the deaf people attending and participating in future badminton tournaments.”

This was yet another highly successful, well organised and enjoyable social tournament. The atmosphere was very friendly indeed. Players were most grateful to the tournament organisers and helpers, with many much appreciated comments from players as well as from their supporters, and queries as to when the next tournament will be!

RESULTS OF FINALS Games were played initially in groups with knockout semi-finals then finals.

LADIES DOUBLES

Jessica Dyson and Monika Przech defeated Mrugaya Mulay and Yashawi Vermula 21-9

MEN’S DOUBLES

Ian and Reece Huntley defeated Simon Entwistle and Mark Armstrong 21-20

MIXED DOUBLES

Simon Entwistle and Jessica Dyson defeated Ian Huntley and Sophie Fowdy 21-14
