National Trust for Historic Preservation (NTHP)

Northwest Artistic Photography was selected as part of a small group of photographers that are photographing Spokane's historic buildings for the National Trust for Historic Preservation's (NTHP) 2012 conference being held in Spokane.

Architectural photography is one of my favorite forms of photography. I also like to incorporate this form of photography into my weddings and portrait sessions.

Davenport Hotel

As a part of the group, I am one of four photographers shooting downtown Spokane from the rooftops. Rooftop shoots are spectacular; the perspective lends itself to a refreshing view of our city. Every time I'm on a new roof, I see something unique; an angle that many will never have the opportunity to see.

Parkade

The images will be used to promote the 2012 conference during the 2011 NTHP conference in Buffalo, NY. All of us have a unique style that accompanies our images, which I'm sure will make it hard for the local decision makers to make choices for the presentation.

Central United Methodist Church

My style tends to be clean, natural colors with depth; and of course, perspective controlled. I originally planned on doing this project with my 4x5 large format camera; I have the film and even some type 54 Polaroids. Unfortunately, I succumbed to the digital route. Packing a studio 4x5 on rooftops would have been near impossible on a couple shoots.

Montvale Hotel

My love of film will keep me going. I plan on doing some ground level architectural shoots this summer with the 4x5 as my tool of choice.

Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes

Some of the views throughout this project have been breathtaking. Getting high enough to avoid the street lights and power poles allows for some of the most beautiful urban scenes I have seen in Spokane. The cathedral towers at sunset is one of my favorites.

Steam Plant Square

Of course architectural photography for me, isn't complete, without shooting at night. The city's buildings come to life when the sun goes down; what better time to capture the essence of a building as the designers intended.

4th of July 2011. Harrison, ID.

Yesterday was a fun day! My wife, Cheryl, and I took our daughter to Harrison, Idaho to watch their fireworks show. It was quite impressive. The community is roughly 260 people strong; which really added to the small town fourth of July celebration. The volunteer fire department was there, too; offering hot dogs and hamburgers with your choice of soda at the fire station.

We enjoy traveling around the northwest and visiting small towns. Harrison is nestled between Coeur d'Alene and St. Maries along a winding stretch of Highway 97.

We couldn't have asked for better weather; the sky was clear and at sunset, the gradients came to life with Lake Coeur d'Alene adding a nice dimensional contrast. As the photographer and owner of Northwest Artistic Photography, I was able to capture some of the beauty around us, as well as enjoy the fireworks display later that night.

Here are some of the photos from our evening in Harrison, ID; we're looking forward to going back again.

Sample Kits

This is a copy of part of the Sample kit that Northwest Artistic Photography will be offering to prospective buyers. The kit will include three 4x5 copies; one printed on Kodak Metallic Paper, one printed on Kodak Lustre Paper, and one printed on Kodak Glossy Paper. These are all high quality Kodak Endura Professional papers. This will allow customers to choose the paper type that is right for their application. Customers will also be able to see variations in water, color, and environment, due to paper choice.

Our favorite is the Kodak Metallic Paper; it allows for a higher contrast image. With its pearlescent layer, water shimmers, lights glow, and colors radiate. (Figuratively speaking, of course.) Kodak Metallic Paper is best viewed without glass. We recommend 3/16", 1/2", or 1" Gator board for mounting and hanging. When mounting the Kodak Metallic Paper under glass, you will lose some of the pearlescent feel.

Kodak Lustre Paper is a very nice all round choice. This paper looks great under all glass. If you are going to use anti-reflection glass or museum quality glass, Lustre is going to work very well.

Kodak Glossy Paper is great for showing off photos. The glossy paper works well under glass or mounted "gallery" style with Gator board for displaying.

Global Credit Union Print Display

I currently have 7 prints displayed at Global Credit Union. This is one of thier lending centers, located on Post and Riverside (726 W. Riverside) in Downtown Spokane. If you're interested, please stop by and take a look. All of the prints were printed on Kodak Metallic paper and range in size from 16x24 to 20x24.

If you are interested in purchasing a copy of one of these prints at the sizes above, they will be $225 each and they will be flush mounted on 1/2 inch Gatorboard. The mounts are very light and strong. These are high quality display prints.

These are part of a series of night shots that I have taken over the years. The Space Needle and Ella's Supper Club were both shot on Medium Format films, then scanned so that I could have them printed at my local photo lab. The rest of the images are digital files shot with my Canon EOS 5D, using various techniques; long exposure, 2nd curtain sync w/flash, and high dynamic range (HDR).
