What kind of leaders are we forming, and what kinds of cultures are we creating around us?

These aren't abstract questions. For too many churches, the gap between the values we preach and the environments we build has caused real harm to real people. If you've ever sensed that something is off in your ministry culture, or wondered whether the way you lead is truly shaped by the gospel, this evening is for you.

About the Event

Join us for an evening with Laura Barringer, co-author (with Scot McKnight) of A Church Called Tov and Pivot, for an honest and hopeful conversation about what it takes to build ministry cultures that are genuinely healthy—for leaders and the communities they serve.

Laura writes and speaks from hard-won experience. Her journey through the leadership crisis at Willow Creek Community Church became the crucible for deep reflection on why church cultures go wrong, and what it looks like when they go right. That reflection became Tov.

What We'll Explore

Tov, the Hebrew word for goodness, isn't just a concept. It's rooted in the very character of God, expressed through compassion and generosity, and it's meant to shape everything about how we lead and live together.

On June 15, Laura will guide us through:

What a Tov culture looks like — and the practical traits that define it: empathy, truth-telling, justice, and servant leadership

What erodes it — the toxic patterns of narcissism, fear, and power protection that can quietly take hold in any ministry

Jesus as the model — how his compassion consistently moved toward action and restoration, and what that means for the leaders we're becoming

A challenge for the road ahead — because healthy ministry cultures begin with honest, courageous self-examination

Who Should Attend?

This evening is for pastors, ministry leaders, and laypeople who want to lead well, protect the people in their care, and build communities where the goodness of God is actually felt. Whether you're navigating challenges in your own context or simply hungry to grow, you'll leave with both a clearer vision and a personal challenge.

Honouring Krista Penner and Celebrating a New Chapter

It is with deep gratitude and joy that we share an important staffing update from the Fellowship Pacific Ministry Centre and Northwest College and Seminary with our family of churches across British Columbia and the Yukon.

After more than 17 years of faithful, visionary service, Krista Penner will transition from her role at Fellowship Pacific to a new position at Northwest College and Seminary, where she will serve as Director of Leadership Development, beginning March 1, 2026.

As part of Northwest's Lilly Endowment collaborative grant project, Krista has been hired as the new Director of Network Leadership Development to train and support regional leadership development staff across Canada, including Fellowship Pacific, Fellowship Atlantic, Fellowship Prairies, our Fellowship churches and AEBEQ/SEMBEQ in Quebec, as well as the Baptist General Conference, who will recruit and mentor future pastoral leaders to be trained through Northwest in partnership with local churches.

Krista began serving at the Ministry Centre in 2008 as Director of Women’s Ministries, and later widened her impact as her gifts became clear. In Women’s Ministry, Krista’s gift for speaking was already evident, and it proved to be a powerful tool in expanding Fellowship Pacific’s mission and vision. She loves to use the Word of God to help people become excited about the future God has for them. Over the past several years, Krista has made an extraordinary impact as Team Leader of the Build Team at Fellowship Pacific. Her work has shaped leaders, strengthened churches, and influenced the future of ministry across our region and beyond.

Krista’s passion for developing the next generation of church leaders has been evident in every role she has held. Through initiatives such as Immerse, our in-church leadership education program, she has helped pastors and emerging leaders grow in theological depth and practical ministry skill. Her leadership has been instrumental in building pathways for learning, mentoring, and coaching, creating spaces where leaders are formed, encouraged, and equipped for lasting gospel impact.

Many churches have experienced Krista’s gift for vision-casting and connection through peer-to-peer mentoring, EQ Boot Camp, leadership coaching, and special projects, which have strengthened our fellowship. Her heart for collaboration, her thoughtful leadership, and her genuine care for people have left a lasting imprint on Fellowship Pacific.

We are excited that in this new role, Krista’s impact can reach beyond our region and across our national Fellowship. While her daily presence will be missed at the Ministry Centre, we celebrate that her calling continues in a role that closely aligns with her life’s work and passion for developing Christ-centred leaders. We are grateful that this move deepens the partnership between Fellowship Pacific and Northwest College and Seminary, and we look forward to the ways Krista’s leadership will continue to serve the broader Church.

We give thanks to God for Krista’s faithful service, her leadership, and her enduring commitment to developing leaders for the sake of the gospel. Please join us in expressing our gratitude for all she has contributed to Fellowship Pacific and in praying God’s blessing over her as she steps into this next chapter.

With gratitude,

From Kinshasa to the Nations: How Northwest College and Seminary is Helping Deepen Discipleship in Francophone Africa

The call to ministry does not always arrive in a single dramatic moment. For some, it unfolds slowly, faithfully, over a lifetime of obedience. For Reverend Matthieu, that calling began almost as early as he can remember—and it has carried him from the streets of Kinshasa to a discipleship movement now spanning more than twenty African nations.

Matthieu lives in Kinshasa, the capital of the Democratic Republic of Congo, where he serves as a university professor, pastor, and missionary leader. He is also in the midst of completing his doctoral dissertation. Alongside his ministry and academic work, Matthieu is a devoted husband and the proud father of six daughters—“all girls,” he says with a smile, calling them an unqualified blessing.

The Church in Congo: Wide but Not Always Deep

The Democratic Republic of Congo has often been described as a predominantly Christian nation. At one point, as many as 90 percent of Congolese identified as Christian. But Matthieu is quick to name the challenge beneath that statistic.

“For many,” he explains, “faith did not grow deep roots.”

The dominance of prosperity theology has shaped much of the church landscape. In a country marked by poverty and instability, messages promising material blessing attract large crowds. As a result, obedience, discipleship, and spiritual formation are often overshadowed by financial expectations. Many believers drift away—some returning to traditional religions, others adopting syncretistic practices that blend Christianity with older beliefs.

At the same time, new pressures are emerging. In unreached and rural regions, well-funded Islamic outreach efforts offer financial incentives to communities with little prior exposure to Christianity. In places where survival is uncertain, such offers carry weight.

These realities have convinced Matthieu that Africa does not merely need more churches—it needs deeper discipleship.

A Movement That Multiplies

Out of this conviction, Matthieu founded a discipleship-focused organization that began in Congo and has since expanded into 22 African countries. The fruit has been remarkable. As of 2025, the movement has documented more than 4,000 disciples and nearly 400 leaders currently in training.

What sets this work apart is its depth. Rather than gathering crowds, the focus is on forming leaders who can multiply ministry within their own cultural and religious contexts—often among unreached or high-risk communities.

Many of these leaders serve in regions where traditional theological education is inaccessible or impractical. Leaving ministry for five years of residential training is simply not an option. The need was clear: training that could happen alongside active ministry, not in isolation from it.

Rethinking Theological Education

Matthieu’s own graduate studies exposed him to disciple-making movements in Asia and other parts of the world—movements that emphasized practice, accountability, and multiplication rather than classroom-only instruction. Technology made it possible to imagine something new for Africa: training delivered through online platforms and virtual classrooms, reaching leaders wherever they serve.

This vision aligned powerfully with Northwest’s competency-based approach to theological education. Unlike traditional models that prioritize head knowledge alone, competency-based education integrates learning with real-life ministry practice.

“For the first time,” Matthieu says, “leaders can study, apply what they learn immediately, and remain rooted in their communities.”

Through careful discernment and reports from the field, leaders were identified from countries including Congo, Chad, Togo, Gabon, Angola, and Mali—many serving among Muslim or unreached peoples. These are men and women already bearing fruit, now being equipped to lead more faithfully and effectively.

A Vision for the Future

The long-term hope is bold but grounded: to train 100 African leaders through this program over the next ten years. The need is far greater—hundreds more are ready—but resources, technology, and connectivity remain ongoing challenges, especially in rural areas.

Still, Matthieu is confident. “The proof will be in the results,” he says. “When leaders are formed rather than elevated, when authority gives way to multiplication, the church grows—not just wider, but deeper.”

He is deeply grateful for the partnership with Northwest College and Seminary, the accessibility to an MA of Biblical Leadership degree made possible through grants, and the credibility of a respected institution walking alongside African-led mission work.

“This is something new for Africa,” Matthieu reflects. “And we believe God is in it.”

As the story continues to unfold, one thing is clear: from a boy preaching at twelve to a movement shaping leaders across a continent, God has been faithfully at work—planting roots that go deep, and raising leaders who will carry the gospel far.

How you can partner with Matthieu

Pray.

Pray that theological resources can be available in the French language

Pray for people to come alongside and translate for our English-speaking professors

Pray that the students would have the time and discipline to commit to their students amidst the demands of family and ministry

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Langley, BC – Northwest College and Seminary has received a grant of $9,987,692 from Lilly Endowment Inc. to help establish the PROPEL Project.

The PROPEL Project responds to the urgent shortage of pastoral leaders, with the Evangelical Fellowship of Canada estimating a need for 625 new pastors annually over the next 12 years due to retirements alone. Together with 14 partner organizations, this unprecedented 5-year collaboration will scale Northwest’s successful pastoral leader recruitment and preparation model, conduct evidence-based research on pastoral competencies and church needs, establish sustainable financial systems through endowment funds, and create resources that benefit the broader theological education community.

The PROPEL Project will feature collaboration with church networks across Canada, and Canadian and US research organizations and seminaries, including Fellowship Pacific, Fellowship Prairies, Association d’Eglises Baptistes Évangéliques au Québec (AEBEQ), Fellowship Atlantic, Fellowship International, Baptist General Conference, Youth Workers Community, Evangelical Fellowship of Canada, the Competency-Based Education Network, Sevensided Consulting, Séminaire Baptiste Évangélique du Quebec (SEMBEQ), Trinity Western University, Kairos University and Bexley-Seabury Seminary.

The PROPEL Project is being funded through Lilly Endowment’s Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative. This initiative is designed to help theological schools across the United States and Canada as they prioritize and respond to the most pressing challenges they face as they prepare pastoral leaders for Christian congregations both now and into the future. The grant to Northwest College and Seminary is one of 45 that was approved in this competitive round of funding to support theological schools as they lead large-scale collaborations with other seminaries, colleges and universities, and other church-related organizations.

As pioneers in competency-based theological education (CBTE), Northwest developed the first direct-assessment CBTE program accredited by the Association of Theological Schools in 2015. The PROPEL project builds on the success and innovation of the program with six coordinated objectives:

Partner to scale Northwest's proven collaborative recruitment model to 14 organizations representing 1,150+ churches

Research evidence-based competency frameworks and Canadian church leadership needs

Offer Programs through reimagined CBTE programs, including an accelerated BA/MDiv pathway

Practice by establishing a sustainable CBTE Community of Practice

Endowment creation of three funds totalling $4M for long-term sustainability

Learn through continuous improvement and knowledge sharing with the broader theological education community

Dr. Barton Priebe, President of Northwest College and Seminary, comments, “Our proven track record, combined with the unprecedented scope of this collaboration, positions us to make a transformative impact on pastoral leadership development for generations to come.”

Lilly Endowment launched the Pathways for Tomorrow Initiative in 2021. Since then, it has provided grants totalling more than $700 million to support 163 theological schools in efforts to strengthen their own educational and financial capacities and to assist 61 schools in developing large-scale collaborative endeavours.

About Lilly Endowment Inc.

Lilly Endowment Inc. is a private foundation created in 1937 by J.K. Lilly Sr. and his sons Eli and J.K. Jr. through gifts of stock in their pharmaceutical business, Eli Lilly and Company. While those gifts remain the financial bedrock of the Endowment, it is a separate entity from the company, with a distinct governing board, staff and location. In keeping with the founders’ wishes, the Endowment supports the causes of community development, education and religion and maintains a special commitment to its hometown, Indianapolis, and home state, Indiana. A principal aim of the Endowment’s religion grantmaking is to deepen and enrich the lives of Christians in the United States, primarily by seeking out and supporting efforts that enhance the vitality of congregations and strengthen the pastoral and lay leadership of Christian communities. The Endowment also seeks to improve public understanding of about religion and lift up in fair, accurate and balanced ways the roles that people of all faiths and various religious communities play in the United State and around the globe traditions in the United States and across the globe.

Recently, a letter was sent to all ACTS seminary students from the four presidents of ACTS partner seminaries. You can find the letter below, along with some Frequently Asked Questions regarding the closure of ACTS and the implications for the partner seminaries and their students.

Dear ACTS Seminaries students:

As the presidents of the ACTS Seminaries’ four partner seminaries-Canadian Baptist Seminary (CBS), Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary (MBS), Northwest Baptist Seminary (NBS), and Trinity Western Seminary (TWS)-we are writing to offer a joint statement regarding the future of theological education at ACTS Seminaries and the development of the new School of Theology at Trinity Western University (TWU). We also want to express our deep gratitude for all that God has accomplished through ACTS over nearly four decades, and to share our collective hope for what lies ahead.

Since admitting its first class in late 1980s, ACTS Seminaries has served as a distinctive consortium of theological schools, united by a shared mission to prepare and equip men and women for transformative ministry in churches, communities, and mission fields across Canada and around the world. Over the decades, ACTS has provided a collaborative model of theological education that reflects the rich diversity and unity of the evangelical church.

In March 2024, the ACTS Board of Directors and partner seminaries engaged in a process of discernment about the most sustainable path for theological education in the years ahead. Following careful evaluation, the Board made the decision that the ACTS consortium would dissolve as a society while its accreditation would be transferred to Trinity Western University (TWU), enabling TWU to open a new School of Theology. A petition was then submitted to the Association of Theological Schools (ATS) for approval of the transfer of ACTS’ accreditation and governance to TWU. That petition was approved by ATS in June 2024.

Then, as Trinity Western University (TWU) moved toward establishing its School of Theology, the board of Trinity International University (TIU) approached TWU to explore the possibility of transitioning Trinity Evangelical Divinity School (TEDS) to TWU, as both institutions share a common heritage within the Evangelical Free Church of America (EFCA). TEDS and TWU uphold the same doctrinal commitments and maintain strongly aligned values, making this transition both a strategic and ideal fit. In April 2025, TWU and TEDS entered into a memorandum of understanding through which TEDS will extend its legacy of faith and scholarship by joining Trinity Western in launching a global seminary. TWU is now planning to launch a new School of Theology-set to open in fall 2026-that will build upon the legacies and academic excellence of both ACTS and TEDS.

As seminary presidents, we are deeply grateful for the remarkable legacy that ACTS has built over nearly four decades of ministry. Since its beginning, ACTS, in partnership with TWU, has granted 2,023 diplomas to 1,953 graduates-ranging from certificates to full master’s and doctoral degrees. These graduates now serve in churches, mission organizations, classrooms, and communities across Canada and around the world, embodying the gospel and the vision that first brought our schools together in partnership.

We also want to acknowledge the extraordinary faculty and staff who have served through each of the partner seminaries within the ACTS consortium. These dedicated men and women have demonstrated academic excellence, pastoral wisdom, and steadfast service to students, colleagues, and the wider church. The faculty have modeled exceptional teaching, mentorship, and scholarship-shaping generations of leaders and enriching the theological community across Canada and beyond. The staff, both within ACTS and in each seminary, have provided the essential administrative and operational support that has sustained our shared work and ensured a high-quality experience for students over many years. We are profoundly grateful for the faithful partnership of all who have served in these vital roles. While the governance structure of ACTS will conclude, the spirit of partnership and cooperation remains important. We anticipate continued collegial relationships focused on strengthening graduate theological education in Canada and supporting the training of pastors, scholars, and ministry leaders who serve the local and global Church.

All current students will have clear and supported pathways to complete their academic programs-either during the fall 2025 and spring 2026 semesters at ACTS Seminaries, or through the new TWU School of Theology starting fall 2026. Moreover, each seminary will continue to serve its denominational communities with excellence and innovation.

To celebrate the remarkable legacy of ACTS Seminaries, a special event will be held in spring 2026 to give thanks to God for all He has done through ACTS and to honour the many people who have contributed to its mission. With thanks to each one who serves in the ACTS community, Dr. Kevin Schular President, Canadian Baptist Seminary Dr. Mark Wessner President, Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary Dr. Barton Priebe President, Northwest Baptist Seminary Dr. Todd F. Martin President, Trinity Western Seminary

Frequently Asked Questions

1. What is happening to ACTS Seminaries?

On April 30, 2026, ACTS Seminaries will formally dissolve as a society; the ACTS Board of Directors made this decision in 2024. ACTS’ accreditation, governance, and management of academic programming has been transferred to TWU. TWU plans to launch a new School of Theology-set to open fall 2026-that will build upon the legacies and academic excellence of both ACTS and TEDS.

2. What will happen to the ACTS partner seminaries?

Canadian Baptist Seminary (CBS), Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary (MBS), and Northwest Baptist Seminary (NBS) will each continue as independent institutions, maintaining their distinctive denominational missions and degree programs. All three seminaries hold their own provincial charters to grant theological degrees. In addition, Northwest Baptist Seminary holds accreditation through the Association of Theological Schools (ATS). Each seminary will continue to serve its churches and ministry partners through programs that reflect their unique heritage and educational models. As part of TWU, Trinity Western Seminary (TWS) will become part of the new TWU School of Theology.

3. Where will the four partner seminaries be located?

Northwest Baptist Seminary (NBS) will remain on the Trinity Western University (TWU) campus in the northwest wing of the Fosmark Building. NBS is three years into a 25-year prepaid lease and has no plans to relocate. Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary (MBS) is currently in discussions with TWU regarding its office space. Canadian Baptist Seminary (CBS) has moved its offices offsite and will continue to operate from its new location. As part of TWU, Trinity Western Seminary (TWS) will remain on the TWU campus.

4. What will happen to ACTS faculty and staff?

Faculty are employed by their respective seminaries-Canadian Baptist Seminary (CBS), Mennonite Brethren Biblical Seminary (MBS), Northwest Baptist Seminary (NBS), and Trinity Western Seminary (TWS)-and will continue to serve under those seminaries. Each seminary deeply values its faculty for their ongoing contributions to teaching, mentoring, research, and leadership development. Regarding staff and administrative roles connected to ACTS operations, Trinity Western University is currently in conversation with individuals regarding their transition. ACTS staff members have played an integral role in supporting ACTS and its students, and every effort is being made to ensure a smooth transition that recognizes their service and expertise.

5. What does this mean for current students?

All current ACTS students will have clear, supported pathways to complete their programs. Students graduating by April 30, 2026 will receive their degrees jointly offered through their seminary of enrolment and TWU. Students continuing beyond that date can complete their studies through the new TWU School of Theology starting fall 2026.

6. When will the transition take effect?

The transition process is already underway and will be completed on April 30, 2026, when the ACTS Society formally dissolves. Trinity Western University plans to welcome students to its new School of Theology beginning in fall 2026. More information about the School of Theology will be available soon on TWU’s website (twu.ca).

This year’s Northwest College and Seminary graduation was a joyful celebration of God’s faithfulness and the incredible work He is doing through our students around the world. The day began with a delicious grad brunch, lovingly provided by our Alumni Committee, where graduates, family, and friends gathered to share stories, laughter, and gratitude for the journey that brought them to this moment.

The most striking aspect of the ceremony was how beautifully it reflected the global nature of God’s Kingdom, with students representing Canada, Colombia, the United States, Korea, India, and Ethiopia – just to name a few. Each one has been uniquely equipped and called to serve in his or her own ministry context—whether in local churches across Canada or in communities around the world.

As we celebrated their achievements, we were reminded that graduation is not the end but a continuation of God’s mission through these faithful servants. The work He has begun in them is already bearing fruit in teaching, leadership, and service.

Please join us in praying for our graduates as they step forward into the next chapter of ministry—trusting that the same God who called them to study at Northwest will continue to guide, strengthen, and use them for His glory wherever they go.

In mid-September, Northwest held our annual Cornerstone retreat, hosted at Camp Squeah just outside Hope. Cornerstone is always a highlight of the year, serving not only as the launch point for our new students in the Fellowship Pacific and Northwest networks, but also as one of the rare occasions when these two networks can gather in person. It was a joy to welcome new undergraduate students, reconnect with returning students, and see friendships strengthened across every level of our programs. We're always struck by how beginning the year face-to-face gives a launching point for the digital connections that carry us through the year.

One of the most encouraging dynamics this year was watching graduate and undergraduate students interact. This year, several of our new undergraduate students have current graduate students serving as their ministry mentors, so it was encouraging to see both engage with their peers and each other. My attention was mostly with our new undergrads, but I was continually aware of the richness of what was happening across the camp. At one point, I walked from one end to the other and saw first- and second-year grad students in a leadership seminar, second-year undergrads in discussion with Dr. Morelli, incoming undergrads in orientation, and advanced grad students in coaching sessions.

And yet, despite the diversity of groups and sessions, the highlight was gathering together on Wednesday night for a powerful time of worship as one community. I arrive home tired from staying up a bit too late, but full of hope and excitement for this academic year.

At Northwest’s Korean Programs Student Orientation, we had the joy of welcoming 15 new KBACL students and 5 new KDMN students. Though they came from diverse backgrounds, their introductions revealed a remarkable sense of trust in our school and a shared excitement about the journey ahead. Many expressed their eagerness to study and their confidence that Northwest would be a place where they could grow both academically and spiritually.

One of the highlights of the day was the time of praise in Korean, which set the tone for the entire orientation. As voices joined together, the room was filled with unity and joy, and everyone felt drawn together in the love of Christ. Another deeply meaningful moment was the warm welcome offered by President Dr. Barton Priebe and Provost Dr. Jonathan Numada. Their words not only encouraged the students to embrace this new season of learning but also conveyed their genuine love and respect for Korea and its people. Many students expressed how moved they were by hearing leaders of the institution speak so personally about their care for the Korean program.

During the program introductions, it was evident from the students’ faces that their trust was deepening and their anticipation growing. In particular, students expressed high expectations for the leadership of Dr. Don Chang, the newly appointed Dean of the Korean programs, who they believe will help guide them with vision and wisdom. The atmosphere was lighthearted and cheerful, yet also filled with purpose.

The orientation not only served as a practical introduction to the school’s programs and expectations but also became a time of encouragement and vision casting. Northwest is entrusted with the important mission of walking alongside these new students, equipping them to become leaders who follow Jesus faithfully.

Learning to Lead like Jesus!

Our prayer is that, as they embark on their studies, they will be formed into men and women who are not only skilled in their fields but also grounded in faith, integrity, and a heart for God’s mission.
