Here is a message from the Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center, which works with all of the SCI Model Systems in the U.S. such as ours to deliver current, high-quality health information to individuals with spinal cord injuries and their caregivers and health care providers.

The Model Systems Knowledge Translation Center (MSKTC) is recruiting individuals over 18 who are the primary caregivers of someone who sustained a spinal cord injury. Participants will engage in a phone interview to better understand caregivers’ health information needs. Participants will be compensated $20. Topic: On the Road Again: Driving after Spinal Cord Injury

Driving can give a person tremendous independence after SCI. Being in control of your transportation may make life a little easier and help reconnect you with activities that make life fulfilling and enjoyable. More people with SCI can drive than you might think, but getting back behind the wheel can be a complicated process. At this forum you will learn what it takes to return to driving, how to find vehicles that might work for you, and some options for potential funding. Melissa Patopea, OTR/L, will start the evening with a talk about the University of Washington’s Driving Rehabilitation Program, which evaluates individuals with disabilities for driving potential, determines what vehicle and which types of equipment best suit them, and provides instruction and practice in the use of adaptive driving equipment. Then we will hear from several individuals with paraplegia and tetraplegia (quadriplegia) as they explain how they chose the vehicles they currently drive, discuss their equipment and modifications, and share videos showing them “on the road again.”

Topic: To Walk or Roll: The Controversy Over Walking and Research After SCI

“Will I ever walk again?” This is frequently the first question a patient with a new spinal cord injury asks. However, over time the focus on walking often fades and other issues that impact daily living move to the top of the wish list. Is there peril if individuals

with SCI and researchers focus on walking too much? Where should we be putting our scant SCI research dollars? Our special guest speaker, Michael Boninger, MD, examines this complex issue from the standpoint of both a dedicated physiatrist who has worked with SCI patients for over 20 years and a prominent researcher seeking solutions to the many problems caused by these injuries. Dr. Boninger is professor and chair of the PM&R Department at the University of Pittsburgh, where he also serves as the medical director of the Human Engineering Research Laboratory and director of the SCI Model System. Do you want to improve your mood? Need help starting an exercise program?

The University of Washington is looking for adults aged 45 and over with spinal cord injury and depressed mood to take part in a research study. We are conducting a study to test the effect of exercise on mood.

· Participation is by mail and telephone only, and people living anywhere in the United States are eligible.

· You would take part in one or more phone calls to help you become more physically active.

· You would also complete phone-based counselor assessments and mailed surveys at three different times throughout the study. The surveys ask about your experience with pain, fatigue, and other symptoms in addition to questions about your participation in daily activities, mood and general outlook.

· You would be asked to wear a watch-sized activity monitor for three 1-week periods.

· All participants will receive a free exercise DVD.

· The study will be done over a 6 month period and you will be compensated up to $120.

Topic: It happened to both of us: Conversations with couples

When a person sustains a spinal cord injury, the impact is felt by the whole family, especially the spouse or partner. The initial focus is on the spinal cord injury and the many problems needing constant attention, but eventually the needs of the partner must be addressed. How does a partner feel, cope and adjust? How does the relationship and each partner’s roles within it change? How can a couple survive the stresses and challenges of such a life-altering event and go on to lead a satisfying life together? At this forum we will have a panel of three couples who were together before the injury and are still together from one to several years after injury. They will talk about their experiences and the things they do to stay connected and maintain a healthy, intimate relationship

Topic: Sleep Problems and Sleep Apnea in Persons with Spinal Cord Injury

By Don Fogelberg, PhD, assistant professor, UW Rehabilitation Medicine and Stephen Burns, MD, associate professor, UW Rehabilitation Medicine and acting director, SCI Service, VA Puget Sound Health Care System.

Many people with spinal cord injuries have trouble getting a good night’s sleep. Pain, breathing difficulties, and the need for care periodically through the night often disrupt sleep. Poor sleep quality can have many negative effects on daily life, such as being too sleepy during the day, having trouble concentrating or thinking, interfering with self care and health maintenance, and becoming depressed. Sleep apnea is very common in people with SCI and can have serious health consequences, such as heart disease and even death. This presentation will review the causes and consequences of sleep problems, including a detailed discussion of sleep apnea, and will explain treatments that can improve your health and well-being. In addition, an individual with a spinal cord injury will talk about his personal experience with sleep apnea and its treatment.

CEU credits available for PTs and OTs: 1.5 contact hours. Certificates will be provided.

What do you really want to know about sex after spinal cord injury? Most newly injured people have concerns about what their sex lives will be like: will they ever have sex again (or for the first time)? Although sex may change after SCI, most people still want to develop satisfying intimate relationships. How do they navigate sexuality with an SCI? In this forum, real people with spinal cord injuries talk about their real sexual experiences since injury. Two men with tetraplegia (quadriplegia) and one woman with paraplegia discussed the good, the bad, and the funny. A rehab physician answered questions related to medical issues and sexual activity.

The Northwest Regional SCI System was awarded $2.3 million from the National Institute on Disability and Rehabilitation Research (NIDRR) to continue as an SCI Model System of care and research for another five years. Read about the programs and research activities this grant supports.

· First SCI Wellness Summit Draws Large Audience of Consumers and Clinicians
A joint effort of the UW Rehabilitation Medicine Department's SCI Forum and the SCI Transitions and Wellness Program, this half-day educational program attracted more than 50 attendees and featured presentations by staff and faculty as well as displays by manufacturers of wheelchairs and other technology.

What: Pressure ulcers can wreck your life! (At least for a while.) Preventing and managing skin problems after spinal cord injury.

By Deborah Crane, MD, MPH, UW Rehabilitation Medicine Physician, and Beth Hall, RNC, Certified Wound Care Nurse, Harborview Medical Center.

Pressure ulcers are a serious and scary matter. This presentation will illustrate why you should care about pressure ulcers and the potential consequences of developing one. We will review the risk factors and common causes of skin breakdown after spinal cord injury. As we discuss the early signs of skin trouble, you will learn what to do if you think you are developing a pressure ulcer. Our wound care nurse will explain appropriate treatments for ulcers of different stages. We will highlight specific things that you and your support system can do to help prevent a pressure ulcer from happening to you. In addition, an individual with SCI will share his experiences with pressure ulcers, including treatment, recovery and ongoing management.

CEU credits available: 1.5 contact hours. Certificates will be provided.
